During the second half of the twentieth century, the forest industry removed more than 300 billion cubic feet of timber from southern forests. Yet at the same time, partnerships between public and private entities improved the inventory, health, and productivity of this vast and resilient resource. A comprehensive and multilayered history, Forestry in the U.S. South explores the remarkable commercial and environmental gains made possible through the collaboration of industry, universities, and other agencies.

This authoritative assessment starts by discussing the motives and practices of early lumber companies, which, having exhausted the forests of the Northeast by the turn of the twentieth century, aggressively began to harvest the virgin pine of the South, with production peaking by 1909. The rapidly declining supply of old-growth southern pine triggered a threat of timber famine and inspired efforts to regulate the industry. By mid-century, however, industrial forestry had its own profit incentive to replenish harvested timber. This set the stage for a unique alliance between public and private sectors, which conducted cooperative research on tree improvement, fertilization, seedling production, and other practices germane to sustainable forest management.

By the close of the 1990s, concerns about an inadequate timber supply gave way to questions about how to utilize millions of acres of pine plantations approaching maturity. No longer concerned with the future supply of raw material and facing mounting global competition the U.S. pulp and paper industry consolidated, restructured, and sold nearly

20 million acres of forests to Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMOs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), resulting in an entirely new dynamic for private forestry in the South.

Incomparable in scope, Forestry in the U.S. South spotlights the people and organizations responsible for empowering individual forest owners across the region, tripling the production of pine stands and bolstering the livelihoods of thousands of men and women across the South.

Groundbreaking for the Ohio portion of the National Road, the Nation’s first federally-funded interstate highway, took place on July 4, 1825 at St. Clairsville in eastern Ohio’s Belmont County. Construction was temporarily halted three miles west of Springfield in western Ohio in 1839 when funds ran out. Beginning a mile west of the Ohio River, stone markers were erected at one mile intervals to where the National Road stopped west of Springfield. A total of 175 of these mile markers or “mile stones,” which gave the distance to Cumberland, Maryland, where the National Road started, and to the nearest towns and county seats, could once be seen marking the miles along the National Road in Ohio. This richly illustrated publication provides an in-depth look at an interesting aspect of the Ohio National Road’s history. Only about a third of these 175 markers can still be seen at their historic locations today. Some were moved to U.S. Route 40, and many can be found displayed or stored at various state or local museums and historical societies. This publication provides the historic and present location, as well as photographs of all of the known surviving Ohio mile stones, and discusses the changes in the engraving styles that occurred over time. Several early views of uniquely-shaped Ohio National Road markers, including two capped with stone balls are also included. Interspersed throughout the book are historic and recent images of Ohio National Road landmarks, including bridges, taverns, automobile-era motels, and other points of interest near the markers. Mile markers along the so-called Dayton Cutoff, made to mimic National Road mile stones and fool travelers into thinking they were on the National Road, are also discussed. This book is over 300 pages and contains more than 75 maps, 400 photographs, as well as 4 tables and 3 appendices.

By Lorna Hainesworth This book is very readable while containing an extraordinary degree of detail on the National Road mile markers in Ohio based on a phenomenal amount of research. The illustrations, both in photography and drawings, really add to the wealth of information found here. The author has gone to great depth to ferret out everything that can possibly be found on the Ohio National Road mile markers starting out with a basic description of all mile markers along the entire Historic National Road. No topic relative to mile markers along the Ohio National Road, including the famous (or infamous) Dayton Cutoff, is left out. This book covers all aspects. What a great and different addition to the existing collection of works on our national treasure. No Historic National Road enthusiast's library can be complete without the inclusion of Ms. Gerken's book.

It's a survey that documents every stone's location, inscription, and fate with photographs, drawings, explanatory text, and color coded maps. Mixed in with this detailed cataloging are various stories and supplemental facts that make it an interesting read as well as a unique and valuable reference.

An extensive illustrated survey of one of the most inventive design minds of the twentieth century. Combining whimsy and elegance, Piero Fornasetti transformed everyday objects like cups, scarves, and plates into much sought-after works of art with his idiosyncratic motifs, such as the hand, the female face, and luminescent fish. His dazzling pieces of trompe l’oeil furniture, created in collaboration with Gio Ponti, are also highly prized by collectors worldwide. Fornasetti’s boundless imagination is celebrated here in a book published to document a major retrospective exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The first half of the monograph is organized by type and includes Fornasetti’s paintings, drawings, and furniture. The second half focuses on favorite themes: his use of trompe l’oeil, architectural drawings, and his variations on the face of a famous operatic beauty. Featuring 400 illustrations covering almost fifty years of a protean and prolific designer and artist like no other, this is a must-have for Fornasetti connoisseurs and anyone interested in design.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great for Young Adults By Michael Lapelosa This book is part two, of a three part series about Ancient Rome. Since each book in the series can stand alone, I've only read this book because its the era that interests me the most, but I can assume the other two books follow the same format and writing style. "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Republic" begins with how the Roman Republic was developed after the demise of the last of the ancient kings were overthrown , and ends with the creation of Rome's first absolute ruler. I found the author's discussion of the constant political struggles enjoyable and interesting. However, I found the author's prose inconsistent and not especially gripping. I recognize these books are aimed at young adult readers, therefore I expect to find somewhat uncomplicated writing. Although the events and facts are told in straightforward understandable manner, the lack of crystallized, clear prose prevented a higher rating.

During the time of last Roman king, people made protest against the king and his sons for their transgressions against the kingdom and then the Roman Republic risen. The republic personnel run the country for many years and then complexity created among the system and the rulers. So again the republic has fallen. You will find all of the above interesting information in this book. So have this one for have a good read.

The concluding part of John D Grainger's history of the Seleukids traces the tumultuous last century of their empire. In this period it was riven by dynastic disputes, secessions and rebellions, the religiously-inspired insurrection of the Jewish Maccabees, civil war and external invasion from Egypt in the West and the Parthians in the East. By the 80s BC, the empire was disintegrating, internally fractured and squeezed by the converging expansionist powers of Rome and Parthia. This is a fittingly, dramatic and colourful conclusion to John Grainger's masterful account of this once-mighty empire.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The End By JPS Review first posted on Amazon.co.uk on 14 December 2014This is the third and last volume of John Grainger’s history on the Seleucid Empire. It covers a period of a bit more than a century and it is probably the less known (and perhaps also the less studied) part of their history. The book, and the little-known story of the decline of a once-powerful Empire, has several considerable merits, and perhaps also a couple of problems.I have already mentioned the first of these merits. There are few, if any, modern and accessible accounts in English on the last century of the Seleucid Empire. The second merit is to show that the decline and fall was not engineered by Rome, contrary to what is often still believed. One of the qualities of this book is precisely to show that the loss of Asia Minor and the peace treaty that Antiochus III had to sign following his defeat did not cripple his Empire. Asia Minor was not one of the core provinces of the Empire. The clauses of the treaty seem to have been largely ignored by the Seleucid King and his immediate successors and not enforced by the Romans, at least initially. In addition, the last Seleucid king was not deposed by the Romans but by Tigrane, King of Armenia, which was a kingdom that was once a vassal of the Seleucid Empire. The third merit is to identify the root cause of the Fall: the inability to resist and check the expansion of the Parthians, also once a vassal kingdom. However, John Grainger shows that this inability had little to do with military weakness. Instead, he identifies the main cause of the decline and fall as being the breakdown of the normal order of succession by which the King nominated his successor – almost always his eldest surviving son. This lead to multiple bouts of debilitating civil war with the crown becoming up for grabs from whoever commanded sufficient military support to take it. As well shown by the author, the precedent for this was set with the reign of the rather ruthless Antiochus IV Epiphane who displaced and disposed of his much younger nephew whose father had died while he was still young.Another interesting feature is to show to what extent the Jewish sources on the rebellions of the Maccabees can be misleading in several respects. The main point made here is that these rebellions were for a long time mere sideshows for the Seleucids, at least up until they had lost both Media and Mesopotamia, that is two out of the three core regions of the Empire. This left the Seleucids with only the third (Syria), which also started to fragment and was torn by further civil wars between various pretenders to the crown. As mentioned at the beginning of this review, the book also has a couple of problems. The first cannot be blamed on the author and has to do with the rather complex narrative with multiple Kings and pretenders baring the same names and something competing for the throne (several Antiochus, for instance). This can make the book somewhat difficult to read and the story difficult to follow at times, especially for a general reader. A genealogy of the Seleucids partly addresses this point although it unfortunately does not include the dates of reign of the various monarchs.A second, perhaps more controversial, point is one of the ones made in the conclusion. The author does emphasise, and quite correctly, that the Seleucid Empire is the only of the great Hellenistic kingdoms to have suffered a kind of disintegration in slow motion. However, I could not help feeling that explaining this away by simply stating that the Empire was doomed to fail from the start was a bit superficial. Moreover, claiming that such a failure occurred because its power was based on a very narrow Greco-Macedonian population base may also be a bit of an oversimplification, especially if one considers that a large portion of the Seleucid heavy cavalry was made up of Persian and Median nobles.Four stars for a valuable book, even if some of the author’s statements and positions may seem a bit controversial or even questionable at times.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. like me, are fascinated by the Hellenistic period in ... By D. Lauerman This is a brief review of Vol. 3 of John Grainger's three volume work on the entire course of the Seleukid Kingdom. The full title is The Fall of the Seleukid Empire 187-75 BC by John D. Grainger; Pen and Sword, 2015.The third volume was a tougher read for me than the first two, mainly because of the unremitting series of disasters it chronicles. From the time Antiochus IV (of Biblical infamy) killed his nephew and seized the throne, there began what seems to have been an endless series of pretenders and rebellions, sometimes with as many as three or four candidates for the throne slugging it out at once. The institutions unifying the kingdom were enough to hold it more or less together for roughly 100 years, but the constant corrosive effect of the complete absence of any real legitimacy ultimately doomed the state.Grainger manages, somehow, to find what is interesting to tell about this slow-motion disaster. By painstakingly assembling the scant evidence, he manages to present a coherent chronicle of events, complete with fascinating glimpses into the character and motivation of the various participants. This book does provide a really thorough answer to that age old wargamer's question; if the Seleukid army was really as tough as most rules make it seem on the table, why did the Kingdom fall apart? The answer, according to Grainger, is that so long as the Kingdom was able to control its main sources of money and recruits, the army remained effective. Eventually, the constant friction caused by the unremitting civil wars eroded the manpower pool and tax base beyond what was sustainable. If you, like me, are fascinated by the Hellenistic period in general and the Seleukids in particular, I urge you to get ahold of this series (The Rise of the Seleukid Empire and The Seleukid Empire of Antiochos III are the other 2 volumes) as soon as you can. These books are far superior to what we wargamers usually get from our specialty presses like Pen and Sword. This is not another book written by an intelligent, well read amateur. Grainger is the real thing; a scholarly, erudite writer who dumbs nothing down, gives you all the evidence and detail, yet writes with a wonderful clarity that even ignoramuses like your humble servant can understand. Again, I cannot recommend this series highly enough. It is magnificent

Ebook PDF 1974 - The Promotion Man - New York City: The Morrell Archives (Volume 2), by Dave Morrell

1974 - The Promotion Man - New York City, the second volume in the memoirs of longtime record company executive and Beatles collector Dave Morrell, will be published in October. The book picks up where Volume 1 – the high energy Horse-Doggin’ – left off. When Morrell was just barely 21, he was plucked from a low-level job at Warner-Elektra-Asylum’s New Jersey warehouse, relocated to Manhattan and given a plum assignment as Warner Bros. Records’ East Coast promotion man. Dave takes readers along on this wild ride – getting high with Ron Wood in the back of a limo between stops at radio stations, crossing English rock act Jethro Tull over to a mainstream pop radio audience with the smash hit “Bungle in the Jungle,” breaking new artist Maria Muldaur despite resistance from radio stations that deemed “Midnight At The Oasis” too steamy, witnessing David Geffen’s meltdown at the Planet Waves listening party when he finds out the label’s Bob Dylan ad ran too soon in Billboard, introducing KISS to audiences with a Times Square kiss-a-thon judged by Kenny Rogers, getting Alice Cooper to speak at a PTA meeting and being whisked away to the Bahamas by Deep Purple, who had rented the Starship (a former United Airlines Boeing 720 jet), for an impromptu meet-and-greet with radio programmers. Although employed by a major record label, Morrell resisted becoming one of the “suits” and remained a fan at heart, with a pure love of music – something that’s abundantly clear in Chapter 14, when he and friend Ron Furmanek are invited to John Lennon’s apartment to screen some rare Beatles footage that Ron had acquired – and Lennon reciprocates by playing them an unreleased Beatles recording. Elsewhere in 1974 The Promotion Man New York City, Morrell recounts how he witnessed the final moments of Lennon recording the Rock N Roll album at the Record Plant East and was pulled into Electric Lady Studios to listen to tracks recorded by Jimi Hendrix that the label later declined to release.

1974 - The Promotion Man - New York City: The Morrell Archives (Volume 2), by Dave Morrell

About the Author About the Author Legendary record company promotion man/author Dave Morrell still just thinks of himself as the luckiest fan alive. Growing up in Kearny, New Jersey in the early 1970s, he amassed a collection of Beatles memorabilia so unique that when John Lennon heard about it, he promptly asked to meet the teen. Dave's engaging combination of smarts and moxie put him in the right place at the right time - and, like an East Coast Cameron Crowe, soon he was rubbing shoulders with his musical heroes on a regular basis. Thanks to a tip from a friend, Morrell landed a job as the Assistant Stock Boy in the eight-track tape department at the Warner/Elektra/Atlantic (WEA) warehouse distribution center in New Jersey and began his journey from mega-fan to promo man. Horse-Doggin' and 1974 The Promotion Man New York City are the first two volumes in a series of books from The Morrell Archives that chronicle his remarkable adventures at such record companies as Warner Bros., RCA, Arista, Capitol and Geffen. Having relocated to Los Angeles, Morrell is now doing independent promotion for companies like 429 Records and Lakeshore Entertainment and cruising the California coast in his convertible

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This PDF version doesn't offer pull-outs for separate music parts. Wonderful music. Opt for non PDF. By Moss Piglet Musicians beware. This is a duet book. Typically when sheet music is written for more than one instrument, the different parts are printed in small booklets within the larger book. The booklets can be pulled out so that each musician can use their part on their music stand. This is not the case with this version. This is a PDF version which means that you have the option to print out the 2nd violin part on your own computer. (The second violin part is published in the book but it is all bound together with the 1st violin part and the score.) I love the arrangements and I highly recommend this book but the PDF version did not work for me because I don't want to have to squish together on one music stand. The pages don't lay very flat either due to everything being bound into one, thick book. The non-PDF version is also available through other distributors on Amazon. I had to reread the prologue because of awkward phrasing and run on sentences. I kept reading because I like the mars needs women trope. The rest of the story was in similar shape and I had to force myself to finish. Too bad because the story was interesting. This needs to be edited and updated.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Potential, but not well written By Kindle Customer I've read many futuristic/other world novels, and enjoyed them. I think the potential for a great story is hidden in this one. However, I just couldn't get beyond the awkward flow. There were several sentences that I had to read over and over to make any sense of them. I was annoyed at the overuse of the color "eggplant." There are so many shades of purple and so many ways to describe them, but the author was stuck on eggplant--the word itself does not present an attractive image. The story itself felt like one big information dump. Very little unfolded naturally, instead we were told pertinent details when they became relevant. On the positive, even though this was short (serial length), the main plot is wrapped up. The hook is there for the next book, but the main conflict in this one was resolved.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Aliens! By JennaFaye Razar is determined to find a mate. He hopes with the women from Earth being sent to his planet he'll find one now. Lista just wants to make some quick cash to help her family and go home. Once Razar and Lista cross, their romance is instant. If you're looking for a quick read with a HEA, then this is the book for you.

Lindsay Applegate (1808 –1892) was a pioneer known for blazing the Applegate Trail, an alternative end of Oregon Trail in the state of Oregon. The trail was blazed with his brothers Charles and Jesse in 1846. In 1843, Lindsay and Charles traveled along with their younger brother Jesse after they all sold their farms in Missouri, bought several hundred head of cattle and set out for Oregon. At that time, the final hundred or so miles beyond the Wascopam Mission were by boat through dangerous winds, rapids, and eddies on the Columbia River. Lindsay's nine-year-old son Warren perished, as did Jesse's ten-year-old Edward who did not know how to swim. Lindsay wrote, "We resolved if we remained in the country, to find a better way for others who might wish to emigrate." Lindsay and fourteen other settlers established the South Emigrant Trail between Fort Hall in Idaho and the Willamette Valley via northern Nevada through southern Oregon where Ashland and Roseburg now lie. The intents of this route were to be safer than the Columbia River, encourage settlers to western Oregon, avoid the Hudson's Bay Company controlled area, provide a longer travel season, and steer clear of the disputed English territory north of the Columbia, which most settlers expected would become the US-British Columbia border. This book originally published in 1921 has been reformatted for the Kindle and may contain an occasional imperfection from the original publication or from the reformatting.

How Dutch sailors found Australia and an English Pirate almost beat Captain Cook.

On 15 January 1688 - almost 100 years to the day before Captain Arthur Phillip arrived in Botany Bay as commander of the First Fleet - another English ship, the sixteen-gun Cygnet, was running downwind on a gentle breeze while closing on the coast of the same continent. Cygnet, however, was 2000 miles to the north-west of where Phillip would anchor HMS Sirius and go ashore to finally establish the first British colony in the Great South Land. To get to this point, Cygnet had crossed the Pacific from the coast of Mexico to the East Indies with a 140-man crew comprising a bunch of unruly seafarers, young and old ... and pirates all.

Australian history is one of my major interests, and there is quite a lack of information on this, so this book is great. I can't put it down, and have put aside everything else I'm reading to concentrate on this...and it's an eBook. Yes, I am old school and like to have actual paper, and not paper white. But this is definitely worth getting out of my comfort zone. It's not for everyone. Basically, if you look at this and say "Australian history? I'd like to learn more about that", then pick it up.

His down to earth narrative style and his experience as a sailor and give his books real quality and perspective. His previous works Bligh, Cook and Flinders are some of all time my favourites in books of this kind and, while it's not quite in that league, Great South Land is still very good. Highly recommended.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. This book was a great read. Nine had a terrible childhood and has ... By steamy book momma This book has romance, danger, and more. Nine is an escort; she wound up doing this the same as most girls as a lost choice. Nine doesn’t have a pimp or owner though she works for herself. She made the choice to be an escort to save herself and her friend Jenny. Trig is a hit man, not that he wants to be. One night Nine goes to meet a new client only this guy has something else in mind all together. His name is Victor and he is pissed that he is losing money to Nine. He plans on making her one of his girls. Trig is on a job and Victor is his job; he is supposed to take out Nine as well but he doesn’t. Instead he takes and gets her patched up. Both Nine and Trig are doing things that they don’t necessarily want to. Nine doesn’t know any other way and Trig is being forced. Trig sees something in Nine and for some reason he wants to save her and will at any cost. Can they have a chance at a future? Nine has never had the normal experience girls do; will Trig be able to give those to her? Will Nine take a chance on Trig? This book was a great read. Nine had a terrible childhood and has never had any real affection from anyone. She fights any type of kindness Trig tries to offer her. She is uncomfortable with the way he makes her feel and is angry that she does. She feels out of control and hates that. Trig makes her feel all kinds of things she has never felt before. She feels comfortable and safe with him but it scares her at the same time. Trig is angry for Nine and life she has had to live. Things are out of their control for most of the book but they aren’t going to let that stop them. I really enjoyed this book. The characters are engaging and the story is wonderfully written. I had read most of the book Jen has written and loved them this one is no different. Another great job Jen.

Meet Nine By Jayelle *I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*Nine, is the top paid escort in all of Las Vegas. Growing up shuffled between her drug addicted parents, foster homes, and a pedophile uncle, Nine has never known anything but violence and abuse.Kicked out at age 16, she heads to Las Vegas. She meets Jenny on the streets and at age 18 decides to turn to escorting. And she knows her business. With Jenny as her assistant, Nine becomes the most sought after escort in Las Vegas. It also makes her a lot of enemies, like Mr. V, a pimp who wants Nine to work for him.Trig works for the Savior, a local drug dealer Mr V has ripped off. Mr V also killed Trig's brother. Seeking revenge and trying to protect his sister and her kids, Trig has become the Savior's personal hitman. And the hit is out on Mr V. Only, he isn't alone. Trig saves Nine, but the Savior wants her dead. The cover of Nine caught my eye. Then the synopsis caught my interest. This book touches on a lot of sensitive subjects: sexual abuse, drug addiction, prostitution, murder. It is tastefully written, has a good plot and down to Earth characters. Nine is a spunky and confident go getter. Until she meets Trig and he knocks down her defenses. Trig is a no nonsense kind of guy, until he meets Nine and doesn't know what to do with her. There are a few sex scenes in the story, but the story has depth and really relatable characters. Nine and Trig have a lot of chemistry and a romance starts to bloom between two really messed up people and that made the story even more enjoyable, more real. I'm looking forward to the next story in the series.

To say Socrates was an influence on Plato would be a vast understatement; historians today still struggle to distinguish Socrates’ philosophical beliefs from Plato’s, because much of Plato’s writings consisted of “Socratic dialogues,” in which the main character, Socrates, discusses the topic of the writing with his followers.  Yet for all of the influence of Socrates’ life on Plato, it was Socrates’ death around 399 B.C. that truly shaped him.  Plato was so embittered by Socrates’ trial in Athens that he completely soured on Athenian democracy, and he began to travel around the Mediterranean, studying topics like mathematics, honing his approach to philosophical thinking, and continuing to refine his philosophical beliefs. Timaeus is one of Plato's dialogues, mostly in the form of a long monologue given by the title character, written circa 360 BC. The work puts forward speculation on the nature of the physical world and human beings. It is followed by the dialogue Critias. Speakers of the dialogue are Socrates, Timaeus of Locri, Hermocrates, and Critias. Some scholars believe that it is not the Critias of the Thirty Tyrants who is appearing in this dialogue, but his grandfather, who is also named Critias.

I learned things about the history of the Chicago area in the context of rocking good story about privation, persistence and success. In the interest of full disclosure, the author and I are brothers.

18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Over. The. Top. ............. By S.A.S. This book drew me in immediately. The first scene Where Summer(h) is running for her life after being held captive for 3 months had my complete and total attention. Reign(H), Prez of the Henchmen MC, is shortly thereafter introduced and I was really liking his character. Cash, VP of the Henchmen MC and younger brother to Reign, is another great character. I was really getting into this book. Sigh. By the end of the book I still liked Reign and Cash, but not much else. I will say there is a lot of action in this book. It flows well and there are not many dull moments. This truly is an action packed, not a dull moment, book. Even with my many issues with this story I still continued to read. I had to see how it ended. So...Here are my issues.Editing....'their' is used instead of 'there'. 'Leaning' instead of 'learning'. Commas where comma should not be. Words missing or repeated in a sentence. Words used that I was confused by. Example..."I needed to tramp it down." and "There was a speck of surprise in his eyes before he tramped it down." Shouldn't that have been 'tamp it down' or 'tamped it down'? Then there was the quote "Martin reached up and ripped the tape off my lips, the skin smiting as he did." Maybe the word 'smiting' is used correctly in this sentence but it sounded wrong to me. I thought smite/smiting meant to strike with a firm blow. In this sentence I suppose it meant "hurting'. Not sure because, like I said, I have never seen this word used this way. Does not mean it is not correct. It just pulled me from the story because it sounded so odd.One word sentences were used throughout the whole book. It. Drove. Me. Insane. Who started this stupidity. We get "Three. Effing. Days." Effing is not the actual word used. Then there was "I. Just. Couldn't." And "What. The. Actual. Hell. Was. Going. On?" And of course the well used "What. The. Eff." Repeatedly! Eff was not the actual word used. One word sentences after one word sentences over and over. It. Was. Simply. Too. Much! I. Did. Not. Like. It.Plot...While this story is indeed action packed with not a dull moment, the plot is over the top implausible and chock-full of holes and What. The. Fudge. Just. Happened? moments. I get this is fiction, but it still has to make sense. This plot does not. Almost every character in this book was over the top. Lo, V, Wolf ( the one word man), Summer, Summer's father, Martin, Deke (I think that was his name), and Daniel. All too much and very unbelievable characters. It was like the author was just going for the shock value to the point where the story became too convoluted and...dare I say it again? Over. The. Top.Summer....I couldn't stand her. She is a martyr. Apparently a quite clueless martyr. A clueless martyr who is lusting after Reign not 24 hours after escaping her kidnappers. Kidnappers who held her captive for 3 months. In those three months of captivity she was tortured, beaten, starved, and threatened to be raped repeatedly. The first man she sees after her escape and she is lusting over him? Nope. Not buying it. Later in the story she is once again kidnapped. She has a gun hidden in her boots. Does she use it? No. She does not. She decides, the martyr that she is, that she would rather kill herself than kill anyone else. She decides that even though her kidnappers have tortured, beaten, threatened rape, and starved her she could not bring herself to kill them. No. She decides when she gets the moment to, she will kill herself. That way no one else will die while trying to save her. Ugh! Even when one of her captors is attempting to force her to perform oral sex on him, she reaches for the gun in her boot with the intention of not shooting her attacker, but of shooting herself. Oh. My. God. Could. She. Be. Anymore. TSTL?Okay. I'm done. This had the potential to be a very good book. Non stop action and not a dull moment. Unfortunately, for me, that action, and not a dull moment moments, were way too implausible and WAY over the top. The only thing I liked about this book were Reign and Cash. But they alone could not carry this book for me. No. I. Would. Not. Recommend.

10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. 3 meh stars By Nmmomof4 Overall Opinion: This was an ok read. I had some issues with the connection and the development of their relationship. There was a main time jump that was when their feelings for each other were developing, and we missed that. As a reader, I feel like I need to understand how those feelings developed in order to feel the connection. There were some sweet moments that were presented as flashbacks from that time, but I would've liked it much better if we didn't have that time jump. The ending was way too abrupt for me, and I didn't get anywhere near the amount of closure that I typically like.Storyline: This is Summer and Reign's story. Summer escapes her captors of 3 months on the night of a bad storm. She steals a car, but then crashes into a fallen tree. Reign happened to hear the crash, and finds her running from the car. He then takes her home with him, but doesn't realize the trouble that comes with her. Finally after some coaxing, Summer tells him what all has happened to her and why she is running. Reign takes it as his personal duty to protect her. There are some issues with sex traffickers, drug lords, crime bosses, moles in the mc, and family...but they get their HFN.POV: This alternated between Summer and Reign's POV.Overall Pace of Story: Good. I read it really fast, so it flowed well. I don't know if I'd call it instalove, but definitely instalust.H rating: 3 stars. Reign. He was just kind of meh for me.h rating: 4 stars. Summer. I liked how she grew more confident and was able to stick up for herself further along in the story.Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed here.Heat level: Moderate. For a mc romance, I would say this is on the low side for sex scenes...which would be a pretty normal amount for other romance genres ;)Descriptive sex: YesClosure: This didn't have enough closure for me at all, and my rating is so low mainly due to the ending. I want some concrete commitments or declarations by the end of my books, and at the most I would call this a HFN ending. See my goodreads review for a spoiler.Worth the $?: It was part of the kindle unlimited subscription, but at the $2.99 on Amazon I'd say...yeah

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Simply AMAZING! By Marta Brown This book really lured me in and I have got to admit that now I want to read everyone of Jessica's books. This book is simply PERFECT! I fell in love with Summer in this book and I have to admit that having her as a kick ass female lead with Reign as a match was simply brilliant. I doubt that I know anyone that would be as tough as these two together. This book is not your typical MC romance. I won't say it is more realistic because I've never been in one but it is definitely a bit more down to earth than most. The fight, the agony, and the utter ability to surprise with plot turns will keep you wanting more. I won't give any teasers as you need to read this book and appreciate the thrill!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very happy with this By Kelly B. Very happy with this! The paper included to practice tangling is very good quality paper that my pens glides across so smoothly. I love the feel & look of the paper; quality paper makes drawing easier and looks and feels nice, too. The book's instructions can be a little confusing sometimes, but it is usually cleared up in a later lesson. This is a great value for the price.
