He fought at Wake Island—and survived the brutality of the POW camps Dare K. Kibble was one of a small number of sailors on Wake Island in 1941, volunteering for refueling duty on what seemed to be a paradise in the South Pacific. He wasn’t a marine or a civilian contractor, nor was he trained for combat—he was a machinist’s mate from the USS Tangier. He manned a Browning .30-caliber machine gun in the final beach defense of Wake Island, and was taken prisoner on December 23, 1941. He survived four years as a POW—in China at the Woosung and Kiangwan camps, and in Japan at the Kawasaki and Niigata camps on Honshu. This story is an honest, unfiltered look through the eyes of a survivor who found a way to deal with life as a POW. He also shows us a glimpse of what life was like in small town Boise, Idaho and San Francisco in the early 1940s, and how his WW II experiences changed his view of the world and society.

Pow 253: One Man's Quest for Life during World War II, by Dare K. Kibble

About the Author Dare K. Kibble was a Navy war hero and World War II POW. He was a POW from December 1941 to August 1945. Dare married Anne Smith Sund, whom he met the first day he returned to Boise from POW camp. He earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Idaho, and went to work as a CPA. He loved his family fiercely, loved his outdoors, and his freedom. He believed in the constitution, and why we need the military. He encouraged his sons to join the military, and they did—and so did his grandchildren. He was intensely patriotic. He was known for absolute honesty, and for “calling a spade a spade.” Maggie Kibble Newhouse is the daughter of Dare Keane Kibble. Maggie was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, as were her parents. She learned her love of country from her parents. Her mother was a telephone operator during the war, and was best friends with Dare Keane Kibble’s sister. Maggie is a wife, a grandmother, the mother of four, and a businesswoman. She really does believe her father was a hero, and a lot of people don’t have heroes as parents. She feels privileged to be able to bring this book to life so others will know her father’s story, and understand what he and others who served in WW II did for their country

First they came for the land, later they came for the stars and the moon; all found themselves against the glorious backdrop of the Tennessee Valley. Legendary Locals of Huntsville chronicles the story of Rocket City, a sleepy, Southern cotton town that weathered the Great Depression with its mill villages, gained national attention with Redstone Arsenal, blossomed into the center of aerospace development, and became the home of the largest arts center in the Southeast. Notables include pioneer John Hunt and founding father LeRoy Pope; aerospace engineer Wernher von Braun; world-renowned portrait artist and poet Howard Weeden and cobweb artist Anne Clopton; internationally known soprano Susanna Phillips; Professional Football Hall of Fame member John Stallworth; performing arts pioneers Helen Herriott and Loyd Tygett; and entrepreneur and philanthropist Mark C. Smith. The stories herein celebrate just a handful of the many people who have made a memorable impact on this community and who continue to propel Huntsville forward through leadership by example.

The Black & White Edition

This book is a report on a journey of discovery. Most of my working life was spent as an economist and civil servant in the field of water management. When, on retirement, I was freed from dealing with work-a-day problems, I set off on a private search for a rather broader perspective on the human experience and quite naturally started out from the familiar. I have wandered far and wide on a meandering journey, like that of water itself. I have explored the interface between humankind and this deceptively bland, colorless, tasteless and odorless substance. I have delved into creation myths; looked at the emergence of civilizations and their decay; pondered the place of water in the human psyche, as expressed in art and poetry and folklore; considered its role as a factor of production, a source of energy, a conduit of transportation and a consumer good. In passing, my attention has been caught by wishing wells and water closets, changing concepts of physical and spiritual cleanliness, and a miscellany of comic and curious trivia. And I have turned to the natural sciences in search of answers to the question why this one simple substance should have such an all-pervading influence on our lives. The book has no pretensions to being an academic work. Lacking the tools to deal more than superficially with most of the subjects touched upon, I turned to the insights and scholarship of others for help. This will be abundantly clear to anyone glancing at the quotations that grace the text, or browsing through the bibliography and endnotes. I have done my best fully to acknowledge my indebtedness to others and if I have failed anywhere I take this opportunity of apologizing most sincerely. Errors of interpretation are of course entirely my own. In summary, this is a monothematic essay, a look at the world through one lens— the rippling, complex lens of water. One can catch glimpses of other perspectives on the human story, with emphasis on economics, politics, religion, ideologies, cataclysms and so on. While these have added color to my central topic, they have not diverted me from it. The one claim this essay may have to merit or originality is that it highlights and illuminates the amazing variety and diversity of the interactions between water and humanity. Perhaps it may contribute a little to restoring a sense of wonder at this elixir of life in the exploding number of city dwellers, who give it scant attention as long as it flows from their taps; and to a heightened caution in harnessing it for short-term material benefits, with cavalier disregard for the unpredictable consequences for generations to come.

Writ in Water (B&W Edition), by Nina Selbst

From the Inside Flap As far back as I can remember  water played an important role in  my  life.  I was born in 1928  and  grew up in the seaside village of Muizenberg  near  the southern tip of Africa.  In the long hot summers  I  immersed herself in the cool and pleasant  waters  of  the Indian Ocean. During  the rest of the year I spent  much of my leisure time around the  Vlei, a lagoon that passed only  a stone's throw from my home. It was  fed by the streams  draining  the back slopes of fabled Table Mountain.. With my brothers, I  fished its waters, with  bent pins for hooks and mushed up bread for bait.  Together we dredged up  buckets of its  murky water to watch tadpoles from up close as they underwent the magical process of metamorphosing  into frogs. In 1946, with high school and a year at the University of Cape Town behind me, I set off to Palestine to make my modest contribution to the building of the  State of Israel. I spent four years in a new settlement in the arid south of the country. The first task that faced  its members  was the laying of an eight inch pipeline to bring water for irrigation to the fertile, but drought stricken, land of the area...I  devoted the next years to study at the London School of Economics, earning a First Class Honours Degree in Economics and enjoying a memorable final year under the mentorship  of Professor Lionel Robbins.Back in Israel I found employment as an economist at the Water Commission, the Government office responsible for the overall management and development of the water resources of the country.  I served the Commission through three decades  and retired as Economic Adviser to the Water Commissioner and  head of the Commission's  Economic Bureau.  During those formative years for the young state I enjoyed the privilege of sharing in the work of an amazingly original, daring and creative team--of engineers and hydrologists, agronomists and farmers, scientists and policy makers--that transformed the face of the country, made the desert bloom and developed new and efficient methods of irrigation that brought great blessings both at home and worldwide.  Towards the latter end of the period I also shared in the growing awareness of the cost of success and the beginnings of the search for solutions to emerging problems of pollution and salinization. On retirement I continued to be fascinated by  water and turned my attention to exploring  the complex interactions  of water and  humankind. This book is a product of that activity and a report on the kaleidoscopic panorama that I discovered.

Excellent book By Jolie Before I do my review, I have to put up this disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for a highly discounted price through Tomoson and the publisher. Any and all opinions expressed in this review are mine and mine alone. I received no financial compensation for this review. Now, on to the review. At the end of the review, I will include a links to Amazon for the paperback and Kindle version. Now, onto my reviewI am going to be honest, I was a teeny tiny bit apprehensive about reading this book. I don’t do well reading books that are basically monologues about certain subjects. They put me to sleep. Then I started reading the book and guess what, I was wrong. This book was a wonderfully written essay (of sorts) about water and the different ways it influenced different cultures/religions. From the book of Genesis to the Aborigines of Australia, it covered everything. Rivers, wells, oceans, lakes, streams, dams….all covered. Rainfall (and lack thereof)…covered. Mystical cults that are water based….covered. Bathing (ritual and lack of)….covered. Like I said….everything.The book had beautiful pictures of paintings that depicted water scenes. And she kindly included a glossary at the end. Now, it did take me a little longer to read but that was because of R deciding she wasn’t going to sleep at night (which means I didn’t sleep) and B got sick with a cold came with a high fever. So, if you want to read a book that covers everything water based, read this book. Will I reccomend this book to family and friends? AbsolutelyWill I read it again? Yes.

Although I have traveled much around the globe, I am still fascinated whenever I see a big river or an area with many lakes.I started reading the book by carefully examining the table of content. The amazingly blend and comprehensive point of views presented, as well as the scholarly quality of the writing and the book organization – worried me a little bit. I wondered if the passion would also be dominant, so that I would not only broaden my knowledge but also be able me to read and enjoy the book emotionally. What I found was that the writer's passion for water can be identified on every page and picture. This is the thread that makes the reading of the book a unique intellectual as well as emotional experience. As an academic researcher of interactions between individuals and their communities, I was intrigued by the major motto of the book, presented in the introduction, examining the interaction between human as individuals and as civilizations with water. The immense contribution of water to the development of civilization is well documented in the book. What is lacking is the other side, the damage that human civilizations cause to water by disregarding environmental sensitivity. One example of this is the melting of the glaciers that endanger the existence of islands such as the Maldives and Marshal. Maybe in the next edition of this book Nina Selbest will relate to this aspect as well…The copy of the book that I bought was the electronic version which I read on my Kindle. The many pictures that illustrate the book contribute immensely to reading experience, even though they are in black and white (one of the limits of reading illustrated books in kindle).Although presenting historical and cultural point of views, it is clear that the writer knows from firsthand what she is writing about. Her deep knowledge of both water human culture and history is a rare combination because it demands practical knowledge in water management and a wide education and high intellectual and scholarship background.I highly recommend reading Writ in Water to everyone interested in water and humanity. Reading the book provides a passionate as well as intellectual experience.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This book takes Water - a basic and trivial substance, and makes it very special and precious By Talya Feldmann Let me start with a proper disclosure, the author of this wonderful book is my mother. Giving birth to "Writ in Water" was a long and invested process. I was delighted to see it published. But, beyond the personal connection, this book takes Water - a basic and trivial substance, and makes it very special and precious. My favorite chapter is the one about how the visual arts treated and applied water in their artistic works, from forty thousand years back to present days. In this chapter I found an interesting insight, a new way of looking at water described in paintings. Waters, when applied as part of a casual background, like a stream or lake, are there to say something, almost always optimistic and serene. Waters, when present in their absence, say something else, often related to thirst and suffering and death. Water can also be powerful and life threatening and many description deal with the struggle to stay on the right side of the waters. The most important message I found in this book, is an optimistic one. Through water one realizes that all humans (and all living things), spread both chronologically and geographically, have something very basic in common. Water is the source of life and the drive behind so many aspects of life. Water was and is the drive behind engineering innovation, water is beauty and is the inspiration for romance in all art forms, water is associated with religion and the gods, and less optimistic, water is often the reason for conflict and war.The book Writ in Water by Nina Selbst, is a pleasure to read, the writing is rich and flowing, the text includes lots of intriguing information, some mythological and some hard facts, but all fascinating.Read it slowly to extend the pleasure.

By John Hayes Having read about Alexander's background he has studied psychology and follows and believes in buddhism. His background certainly comes across in this very interesting book.In the first chapter he covers what needs to be known about buddhism and it is surprising to read that up to 1.6 billion people practise buddhism worldwide. In the next chapter we read about the foundations, and although we are not sure exactly when it started it is between the 6th and 4th centuries BC.We read about Buddha's awakening which is very important as he found the way in which a person will be bale to change the path of his karma. In most books that I read I take away a number of important points, and in this book the major point concerns mindfulness. This sounds very simple but it is defined as"The act of accepting the current predicament of things."I think we would all benefit if we did not dwell on negative things in the past and we did not worry about things in the future that might not happen.Personally I have gained a lot from this book, which is very well written

By Rose Prust I downloaded this book in my continued pursuit to learn about the various world religions. I believed this would be a good place to start due to the title of the book. However, I was misled. After reading this book, I do not have any clearer concept or understanding of Buddhism than I received in my college history classes on religion. The author frequently uses terminology without explaining its meaning or the meaning is ambiguous at best. He frequently misspelled words and made simple grammatical errors that made it difficult to follow. I frequently found myself rereading paragraphs trying to understand what was being said. I am more confused on the life and times of the Buddha than I was before.I do not recommend this book to anyone without an understanding of Buddhism as it will just leave you more confused than before. Find a different book. That is what I am going to do.

It has all the information you need to understand this religion. The author does a great job describing what Buddhism is all about including a brief history, who Buddha was, what are the core beliefs including the nine virtues.I really enjoyed this book. It covers lots of great information in it and its a great guide for beginners. Buddhism is becoming increasingly popular and I wanted to know more about this religion. I highly recommend this book

If and when you read this story, have tissues and extra undies available !!It's time for my FULL REVIEW :)Zander Minelli has spent the last 20 years serving his country. It's time to retire. It's time to settle down and grow some roots. But there's a problem...he's not really that guy. The guy who lets roots grow. So he's fidgety about his future. He's not uncertain about retiring, just uncertain about how he will fit into the world. But then Faith Davidson happened. One look at Ponytail Girl and Zander was smitten :)Faith Davidson is a widowed single mom to a spunky 4 year old, living with her mother and writing her next best seller. It's been four years since the death of her husband and she's ready to move forward with life. Well, she's ready to take tiny steps forward. Very stable, sure-footed tiny steps forward. But then Zander Minelli happened and she was fascinated :) #ZanderEffectFaith and Zander were kismet from the start. From the very beginning of this story you feel the connection. It's woven into the prose of the story flawlessly. They are two pieces of a puzzle perfectly matched. Zander adds just the right amount of zest to Faith's world to help her come out of the shelter she has built around herself and her heart and Faith has just the right allure it takes to bring the roaming alpha man home.Theirs is a story that although begins quickly, builds over time apart. They meet when Zander is home on break. He still has commitments to the army he needs to meet. They only have a week and then he'll be gone for six months. They start out friendly but that doesn't last. They're explosive together. Their chemistry and desire for one another is palpable. They never stood a chance as friendlies. They were destined to explode between the sheets, in the living room, in the kitchen, under the stars ... everywhere. They were just meant to be, period..kismet :)Love on a Summer Night is a story of trust and growth, destiny, love, friendship and family. It's a story of two people roaming until their paths crossed and they could both finally come home.If you've never read a Zoe York novel, start here. Read this story. Because this is the story that defines who Zoe is as a writer. This isn't her first book, but I feel it is the best representation of who she is as a writer. I've read every book she's ever published so I think I've seen her many sides. This story shows her heart and her passion for story-telling. It's romantic and sexy, emotional and funny, tender and heartwarming with the right amount of angst and heartache. It's one of Zoe's best work yet, you really shouldn't miss out on it! #TRUST

By Maria Rose This is the fourth title in the Pine Harbour series, each of which has featured the wonderful combination of small town romance with sexy contemporary style. They are all standalone novels featuring different couples getting their happy endings. Zander's brother Rafe is married to Olivia, his sister Dani is with long time friend Jake, his good friend Ryan has partnered with movie star actress Hope and he couldn't be happier for them, even if he sometimes feels a pang of loneliness. A career army man, after twenty years in the service he's decided to retire, not sure what he'll end up doing next, but visiting his home town of Pine Harbour while he decides on his next move. Meeting widow Faith (whom we were introduced to as a secondary character in Ryan's story, Love on a Spring Morning) in the diner on the eve of his arrival into town sparks a desire in him to find out more about the woman whom he finds quite fascinating. Zander's plans are to be in town for a week, then head back to his base in Alberta, still with no definite plans for the future. But developing a friendship with Faith suddenly becomes more important than anything, and he's willing to risk a chink in his armor if she'll consider the same. Naturally hesitant after the loss of her husband, and with all her focus on her 5 year old son, the last thing Faith is looking for is a new man in her life. Can Zander convince her that if she'll just give him a chance, he'll come back to stay with her, for good?I think I'm going to be hard pressed to find another book boyfriend as perfect as Zander. Seriously, he's all that and a bag of chips. He's funny, sweet, sexy, enough alpha to satisfy any woman and at the same time a patient, kind and understanding person. After his first encounter with Faith he knows it's not going to be enough, and meeting up with her again just solidifies for him that even though she's trying to hold him at arm's length, she is the one he can see as part of his future. Some of the story portrays their long distance relationship, as Zander still has obligations to his military career and travels back and forth. I thought that was portrayed realistically, and if absence makes the heart grow fonder, it definitely works on Faith. Zander's a wonderful father figure for Faith's son too, and seeing a strong, confident male show that parental side is enough to give your ovaries a zing. The sexual chemistry between Zander and Faith is present from their first meeting, and we get some surprisingly steamy scenes between them as they connect on an intimate level. Faith may guard her heart from Zander at first, but he does a pretty good job of wearing her down.Equally interesting was seeing the other couples in this story, in particular Jake and Dani whose wedding we witness here. The friendships and family relationships all have that warmhearted feel to them, which isn't to say that conflicts don't arise, but that there is no doubt that they have strong bonds that can weather any storm. And while there are some emotional moments in the story, I found it to be very low in angst with lots of laughter and sweetness. I'm going to call this one as my favourite in the series so far (and really, they've all been excellent). 5 stars.

By Linda Miller "Love on a Summer Night" is the fourth book in Zoe Yorks incredible Pine Barbour series and though it can absolutely be read as a stand alone novel, I would recommend starting from book one so you get toknow all the lovely people of Pine Harbour!Faith Davidson moved to Pine Harbour with her Four year old son, Eric and her mother having moved there after loosing her husband, four years ago;she spend her days writing her novels and is currently trying to finish her next best seller . Of course, when Eric comes home is when her real job starts, because nothing is more important than him! Her book may not be as important but she happens to be stuck on the weaponry she chose to use in this novel, so once Eric is settled for the evening , Faith heads out to the local Bakery coffee shop in town to try an working out.Zander Minelli, has not np been home to Pine Harbour for a while, but as happy as he is to becoming home for good in six short months , he is in no rush to get there so he decides to stop for a cup a coffee and a piece of pie , to enjoy the quiet . What Zander does not expect. Is to find himself sitting with a very beautiful women taking about weaponsZander is at the stage of his life that he is ready to settle down, marry and have a family and he never thought that coming home for his sisters wedding would lead him to meet someone who might just be able to fill that job!Faith, though ready to start venturing out into the dating pool , she is just looking to dabble, she is not ready for any major commitment , but she finds herself overwhelmingly drawn , to the very sexy, tattooed man who knows an awful lot about weapons! To spite being drawn for him she tries hard not to get too involved, but how can any red blooded women resist the Zander effect! Not sure what that is ; well your just going to have to read and find out for yourself , because Zoe York has written another book that just captures you and has you falling in love with another Minelli and the people of Pine Harbour even more! Zoe , never ceases to surprise me just when I think the last book was the absolute best she has written the next one comes along and floors me all over again!Arc copy graciously provided by author for an honest review, and honestly , no matter which book of Zoe's you start with you will not be disappointed!

Excerpt from History of Effingham County, IllinoisAfter several months of laborious research and persistent toil, the history of Effingham County is complete, and it is our hope and belief that no subject of general importance or interest has been overlooked or omitted, and even minor facts, when of sufficient note to be worthy of record, have been faithfully chronicled. In short, where protracted investigation promised results commensurate with the undertaking, matters not only of undoubted record but legendary lore, have been brought into requisition. We are well aware of the fact that it is next to impossible to furnish a perfect history from the meager resources at the command of the historian under ordinary circumstances, but claim to have prepared a work fully up to the standard of our engagements. Through the courtesy and assistance generously afforded, we have been enabled to trace out and put into systematic shape the greater portions of the events that have transpired in the county up to the present time, and we feel assured that all thoughtful persons interested in the matter will recognize and appreciate the importance of the work and its permanent value. A dry statement of facts has been avoided, so far as it was possible to do so, and anecdote and incident have been interwoven with plain recital and statistics, thereby forming a narrative at once instructive and entertaining. We are indebted to H. C. Bradsby, Esq., for his very able general history of the county comprised in the first nine chapters; to B. F. Kagay, Esq., for the chapter on the "Bench and Bar;" to Charles Eversman, Esq., for chapter on Teutopolis, and to G. M. Le Crone, Esq. and many other citizens of the county for material aid in making the proper compilation of facts embodied in the work.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Perkins My copy of this book is well used because I used it as a basis for several articles on Liberty Township in Effingham County and families who settled there. I located it originally by online search; it is in the public domain.I think the chapters that discuss Liberty Township should be read by anyone who has lived there.I have been able to find most of the early families listed in Ancestry.com and thus read more about them and their descendants.

Young socialite, Tiffany Thompson, seems to have it all, everything but love, that is. Guarded since her high school boyfriend’s betrayal, she wouldn’t recognize real love if it hit her over the head. Unless it’s a can of paint, and successful financier Todd Jameson is behind it. Todd fell hard and fast for Tiffany a year earlier, but, unwilling to risk his own heart after a college sweetheart shattered it, he avoids Tiffany and vows to keep his distance. Fate has other plans, however, and changes both their minds. But not everyone is happy with their budding romance. Unbeknownst to either of them, a vengeful enemy stands in the shadows with plans to take Tiffany, and Todd is in the way. Halfway around the world, Angela Bartholomew, a former foe in Tiffany’s circle, is serving a year-long sentence as a volunteer in a Romanian orphanage in payment for her lying, manipulative ways. That or be disinherited by her parents. The spoiled debutante is determined to get home at all cost, but Fate has plans for her, too, and Angela is not prepared for how her life will change. Will love conquer heartbreak, or will greed and revenge ruin all three lives?

Review "Sweet with just enough mystery. I never would've guessed the outcome which was amazing. At the same time it was touching and adorable which made it the perfect romantic book. It's similar to J.D. Robb's work where there's just enough romance and just enough mystery/suspense. Perfect!" Amazon Reviewer

About the Author MK has always been a voracious reader. After hitting a dry spell of reading material, she decided to write the kind of book she'd like to read. This resulted in the creation of her debut novel, Intentional. (Award for Best Sweet Romance - eFestival of Words- August 2014) Unintentional, the second book in the series, is based on the life of one of the characters in Intentional (Cade - an engineer/rock star). Unintentional was written as a stand-alone book. Breaking Braydon, another stand-alone book, is now available on Amazon. Taking Tiffany will be released Nov 2015 When she's not writing novels, she likes to spend her free time traveling the world, splashing in mud puddles (She lives in Seattle, what can she say?), watching movies and reading (!) She LOVES to hear from her readers! mkharkins@hotmail.com https://www.goodreads.com https://twitter.com/mk_harkins https://www.facebook.com/marilyn.wellnitz

She’s given her readers a story about two people willing to risk their already-damaged hearts in order to give love one more try. It’s a familiar trope, because we’ve all been there, and we enjoy seeing how two young lovers find their way through. But Harkins offers more than romance in Taking Tiffany.Sure, this book gives every romance reader exactly what they’re most desperate for, a stunning young couple on the cusp of love, and a front row seat to all that dares come between them, namely their own shattered hearts and the walls erected as a result. But, as they claw their way toward love and happiness, danger lurks for Todd and Tiffany, though they have no idea there’s an enemy nearby, let alone what’s about to happen to them.As an avid reader of romantic suspense, I often see what’s coming on the horizon, but honestly, the big reveal at the end of Taking Tiffany floored me. I had no idea and couldn’t have possibly guessed who the mystery man was. That’s rare in this genre, so I applaud Ms. Harkins on stumping this savvy reader. But this book offers so much more than that. As with her last book, Breaking Braydon, from which Tiffany and Todd were borne, there is much levity offered in the way of humor. Just at the right moment, the author tickles your funny bone, and you can’t help but giggle in relief. But that’s not to say there’s no angst. Believe me, there’s plenty of emotional turmoil here, not only between Todd and Tiffany, but also with Angela, a secondary arc leftover from Harkins’ last novel. We came to despise Angela in Breaking Braydon, and rightfully so. She was entitled and meddlesome. And not much appears to have changed for her in Taking Tiffany, at least not at first. But the author soon takes you on Angela’s journey toward not just self-awareness, but toward redemption and atonement, though it’s not an easy odyssey. And while Angela wants nothing more than to return home to her life of ease and wealth, she soon confronts a war within her own soul and risks losing her defiantly reformed heart to not only the man who thwarts her at every turn, but the children she’s been forced to serve. This book will touch you on so many levels with its heart and humor, its strength and message of perseverance in the face of loss and loneliness. Taking Tiffany wraps you in the arms of love, without rubbing your nose in what’s better left behind closed bedroom doors. It’s classy and dignified, fresh and resilient. And you are so gonna love it! A+, Ms. Harkins! Well done!

It is extremely hard to write a review that will do this book justice without giving any spoilers, but I am going to try. This is the 4th book I have read by M.K. Harkins and I have to say her books just keep getting better. I really enjoyed this one because besides the really great love story between Todd and Tiffany we got a story that kept me guessing all the way through. Every time I thought I had it figured out, she would throw something at me and change my mind. I was happy in the end that I guessed some of the mystery, but she threw another curve ball at the end that added another element to the story. Her stories are too long but they move at the perfect pace. Nothing is ever rushed but there is never a time in the story that it drags either. Being that this book was told in Dual POV and different time frames, I thought the flow was perfect. Everything just worked well together and I liked how she told this story. My favorite part of this book has to be the epilogue. I thought she did a magnificent job wrapping up everyone's story and leaving the reader in a happy place :)What I found intriguing about this book was it was kind of like we got 2 stories in one. This book is basically about Todd and Tiffany (Both characters from Breaking Braydon) but she also gave us Angela's story as well. She was also a character from Breaking Braydon who was the villain in that book. I was curious if she was going to be able to redeem Angela in this story after everything she did in the other book. I am not going to tell you if she did or not, you will just have to read the book.Like I said before this book is about Tiffany and Todd. I loved their characters. They seemed to mesh well together. This was actually kind of like a friends to lovers story. Because Todd and Tiffany have been friends for over a year but during that time they have also been fighting feelings for each other, until one night one of them cracks and makes it known how they feel. You'll have to read the book to see who broke first ;) I thought both Todd and Tiffany were relatable and believable characters. You can't help but get sucked into their world and root for a HEA for them.Taking Tiffany is a spin off from Breaking Braydon and I guess it can be read as a stand alone but my recommendation would be to read Breaking Braydon first and then this one. You meet Tiffany and Todd in book 1 and I think you get more of feeling of their characters by reading book 1 first. Plus you'll understand the dynamic of the other characters better. We do get to see a lot of Braydon, Jain and Colin in this book, so it would be nice to know their backstory as well.So if you are a fan or are looking for a book that has an intriguing and captivating storyline and lovable characters and has the perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and romance, then this is the book to read. I think every reader should give this book a chance, there is something for all readers out there.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I really loved it! By I am This has quickly bumped up my favorite books list. I really loved it. Loved it so much, as soon as I finished, I went right back to the beginning to read it again!Tiffany was adorable! Ditto for Todd. I loved them both! Their relationship was fun to read and they had so much chemistry! MK Harkins has no trouble creating cute and clever romance; she’s nailed it with Taking Tiffany. I felt like Todd and Tiffany were old friends of mine from the very beginning. I loved all the secondary characters too and now I can’t wait to go back and read Breaking Braydon, because, yes, I haven’t read Breaking Braydon yet, BUT that didn’t make it hard to get right into Taking Tiffany. I had no trouble keeping up with this story. It can definitely stand on its own without the prequel. MK Harkins absolutely kept me guessing until the end too. I tried throughout the story to guess the badguy, but it took me quite a while to figure it out.The first time I read from Angela’s POV I wasn’t sure I’d like her. Well, actually I was sure I wouldn’t like her, but I wasn’t sure I would like reading about her. I was so wrapped up in Tiffany’s story, I didn’t care to hear from Angela. But the more I read, the more I enjoyed reading these chapters. Angela’s story was extremely interesting. I found myself looking forward to these chapters.I can honestly say, I enjoyed both story lines immensely. Well done, Ms. Harkins! I haven’t read The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks, but I watched the movie and this reminded me of that. Two very different stories all wrapped up into one. It’s really, really good!I can’t wait to see what MK comes up with next, until then, I’m off to read Breaking Braydon!

Astonishing Events from the American Revolution That They Don’t Teach in School! We all know about Washington’s crossing of the Delaware and Betsy Ross’s stitching together the Stars and Stripes, but how about a little-known, valid reason for the war itself and why General George was able to survive a plague that wiped out many of his fellow countrymen?History buff Tim Rowland provides an entertaining look at happenings during and surrounding the Revolutionary War that you won’t find in history books. He digs into the war’s major events and reveals the unknown, bizarre, and often wildly amusing things the participants were doing while breaking away from Great Britain. For example, conventional wisdom says that “no taxation without representation” was an important reason for the revolution, but not in the way we’ve been told. Colonists paid the wages of common-court judges, who were reluctant to rule against the men who paid their salaries. Therefore, duties on molasses (the key ingredient in rum) were generally unenforced until the British cut the tariff in half. Strange but true, the spark that touched off the revolution was in fact a tax cut.During the French and Indian War and then again in the first year of the revolution, the British were accused of biological warfare, infecting blankets with smallpox and then concealing them in Indian camps. So feared was the disease that soldiers began to illegally inoculate themselves before widespread vaccination was finally ordered for the army. Washington himself was immune, thanks to a Caribbean trip taken as a young man when his brother Lawrence sought a cure for tuberculosis. Lawrence wasn’t cured, but George was infected with smallpox in Barbados. As a young man in a warm climate, he survived. As an older man in a northern winter, however, the story of the father of our country might have had a different ending.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Howard Tim Rowland is a "local boy" whose commentary appears three times a week in the Hagerstown Herald, which is how his writing came to our attention. He has a nice, easy going style, somewhat self deprecatory and I find it engaging. This is quick, easy reading with engaging insights into historical events of revolutionary war days. It was bought as a Christmas present for a friend who is "into" reading of that sort and I feel sure she will enjoy it.

God's Way of Peace, by Horatius Bonar

About the Author Horatius Bonar was born in Edinburgh on December 19th, 1808. He was one of seven boys, three of which entered upon gospel ministry (John James, Horatius, and Andrew) in their early years. He was ordained a minister in the Church of Scotland on November 30th, 1837, and was later given charge over the North Parish Church in Kelso. Bonar was counted among the dissenting ministers who left the Established Church to form the Free Church of Scotland in what was known as the Disruption of 1843. In 1866 he accepted a call to pastor in Edinburgh at the newly erected Chalmers Memorial Church. He was one in a long line of ministers in the Bonar family. In the May 1908 edition of The Scotsman magazine, they estimated that the Bonar descendants (John Bonar 1671-1747) served a total of 364 years in the pulpits of Scottish churches. From the pulpit, Bonar’s message was simple and clear: he preached a crucified and risen Christ, whose righteousness alone was the only hope of sinners. He was adept in the exposition of a free gospel through the necessary sovereign workings of the Holy Spirit. His presentation always placed an emphasis on the urgent and immediate necessity of leaving one’s sin and coming to Christ; and this as the only means of reconciliation between man and God. In a rare autobiographical piece, Dr. Bonar wrote of his theology: “Righteousness without works to the sinner, simply on his acceptance of the Divine message concerning Jesus and His sufficiency,–this has been the burden of our good news…It is one message, one gospel, one cross, one sacrifice, from which nothing can be taken and to which nothing can be added. This is the…beginning and the ending of our ministry.”

Great Book, Bad Publication By JNJ God's Way of Peace by Horatius Bonar is one of the best defenses of the gospel against legalism I have ever read. It is also one of the most winsome presentations of the gospel I have ever read. Its value comes mostly from its great ability to deal with the numerous and clever barriers that men create to keep themselves from the freedom of the salvation of Christ. I recommend this book as highly as I possibly can. With that being said, the Legacy Publications printing of this book is quite poor. Typographical errors are numerous, and entire sentences of the original book are left out. I do not recommend this publication.

Foundation Of True Religion-Peace With God By Joseph J.Adrian Horatius Bonar pastored one congregation of the Lord's people for over fifty years. He was eminently useful in his generation and a number of books, booklets, tracts and hymns continue to have usefulness among the saints of this generation. His ability to clearly, simply and powerfully bring the gospel(in addition to many other foundational Biblical truths)is undeniable. To any who are familiar with his written ministry,it is no mystery to them, why so many of his published works still have significant usefulness, some one hundred and twenty five years after his labors in this life were completed.Another interesting component of Bonar's ministry is that it appeals to the babe in Christ as well as the seasoned saint who has been walking with the Lord for decades. What is conviction of sin? Pastor Bonar gives a simple yet profound explanation of precisely what it is- "conviction of sin is just the sinner seeing himself as he is,and as God has all along seen him. Then every fond idea of self goodness, either in whole or in part, vanishes away."-When an individual comes to see this, any notion that he can save himself,or that there is anything in him that commends him to God is unthinkable. There can be no peace with God as a result of our own goodness or from anything in our nature or character.Another of Bonar's great strengths is his discernment. He writes "Faith, then,is the link, between the sinner and the sin bearer. ... It is not faith as a piece of money or a thing of merit;but faith taking God at His word, and giving Him credit for speaking the honest truth, when He declares that,'Christ died for the ungodly' "-I think some often stumble at this(though it can be ever so subtle)You don't have to have any goodness in yourself to come to Christ. If you were applying for a job and the only qualification was that you needed to know that you were ungodly, then you would be suitable for that job.If you realize that you are ungodly then there is a Savior that is suited to your greatest need(Christ Jesus the Lord). He did not come to save the righteous but He came to save sinners, the ungodly, those who are helpless and needy in themselves(those who know they need a Savior or they will die eternally)."Salvation for the sinner is Christ's work;salvation in the sinner is the Spirit's work."-faith receives God's testimony concerning His son.Once received by faith the powerful work of the Spirit of God applies the work of the Savior in the believers and this work continues in them the rest of their earthly days. The Church of Rome has this all wrong-we are not saved by a co-operative effort(the work of Christ and our work)we are saved by Christ's work alone and once we are justified by the work of Christ on our behalf then we are being sanctified by the Holy Spirit of God who dwells in us and is transforming us by His almighty power.I have read many Christian books by numerous authors, and without hesitation,I would place Horatius Bonar's writings as among the most helpful to me.If you've never read anything from this humble, godly servant of the most high God you're in for a spiritual feast.Gods' Way Of Peace would be an excellent introduction to the written ministry of this eminent servant of the King of King's and Lord of Lord's.
