Their lives are worlds apart. The Colonies have spread throughout their corner of the galaxy, colonising any planet that will support life, or contains valuable minerals. Each planet has its own peculiarities, from the lost and primitive planet of Zerris, to the thriving planet of Urslat, to the meteor decimated Semala. And each planet has their own set of rules to govern what can and can’t be done. But love doesn’t always play by the rules. Reckless Rescue He crash landed on her planet. Can they survive the winter together without falling in love? Stranded on the dying planet of Zerris, Marlee longs for the one thing she can’t have…a family. Due to the noxious gas covering the planet, she can’t conceive a child, and the Council, determined to repopulate the planet, have ended her third—and most precious—relationship. They insist she pick a new mate and try again, but she’s sworn off love and the possibility of ever having a real family. When a ship from the thriving planet of Urslat crashes on Zerris, Marlee rescues the ship’s daring captain, Tyris. His ship is grounded, winter is setting in, and he won’t survive without help. She offers him a deal…he can live with her if he pretends to be her mate so the Council will leave her alone. Tyris agrees and a hungry desire sparks between them as they battle the harsh winter and primitive conditions. Their attraction grows, and soon, keeping their distance becomes impossible, even more challenging than the snow, the Council, and, for Marlee, the risks of a real relationship. Will she risk her heart one last time for a chance at her dream? Or will Tyris be her undoing? Reckless Rebellion With Tyris's home planet in sight, Marlee is looking forward to exploring her new home. Only a routine medical exam to go, then they can be together on the thriving planet of Urslat. Incredibly, the exam reveals something that shouldn't be possible. Something that is actually illegal because of Tyris’s past. Marlee’s pregnant. Marlee and Tyris will do everything they can to keep their secret safe. But Urslat has its own problems, forcing Marlee to choose between everyone she has ever known and the ultimate secret she carries within. Reckless Recon Following his brother half way across the galaxy seemed like a good idea at the time, but it hadn’t hit him just how much he was giving up. Stir-crazy after three weeks in space, Kerit, professional surfer turned interstellar colonist, jumps at the chance to get off the ship and onto the new planet’s surface—even if it is a little inhospitable. He expects searing heat. He expects acid rain. He even expects the sunburn from hell. What he doesn’t expect is to meet Folly—the most prickly, irritating, and fascinating girl he’s ever known. And he needs her help if they want to make this planet their new home. Determined to find her father's ship and prove he was a brilliant scientist, Folly has no interest in getting to know Kerit. The cute stranger is just a distraction. Unless of course he can help her in her search… But something sinister lurks in the ruined city, and neither of them realise how much they are going to have to rely on each other if they want to make it out alive.

He is rescued by Marlee, who is herself part of a community of people who have been stranded on Zerris for many years. The marooned villagers are very focused on repopulation, so Tyris is a welcome addition. The main theme of this book is a love story, but there are strong sub-themes related to personal rights, exploitation of resources, and the powers of governance. The inter-weaving of these sub-themes, and how they impact Marlee and Tyris, are central to the drama.Rinelle Grey is very good at crafting a sense of time and place. Because the people on Zerris have been marooned for a long time, their existence is an interesting mix of technology and pre-industrial survival. Tyris is out of his element in this environment and the examples Grey puts together are descriptive, revealing and well done. Finally, Zerris in winter must be utterly miserable. I felt every cold wind and piece of sleet hitting my face.Reckless Rebellion:Continues Tyris and Marlee's story. Great political overtones with commentary on personal freedom and rights.Reckless Recon:New adventure at Semala tease readers at the end of Book 2, I SO wanted to dig into Book 3.I don't want to say much about the landing on Semala and Kerit's and Folly's adventures there. However, it is worth noting that Rinelle Grey can turn the weather and terrain into something very vivid. While she did a great job describing a harsh winter on Zerris in Book 1, she has flipped that to a hot, harsh, dry climate on Semala. The descriptions of thirst and sweating and steaming in an environmental suit are really well done.I was curious to see professional surfer Kerit transition to space traveler and life on a desolate planet. How was Rinelle Grey going to turn this likable surfer-dude who constantly cleans out his brother's refrigerator into a space opera hero? She does so by stripping him down to someone who questions his role, his worth and his intelligence and building him back up. As the book goes on, Kerit gains confidence and has one really brave, really reckless moment that is the pinnacle of his emergence as a hero. Kerit isn't a "tortured hero" type, but he is looking for his place in the universe.Folly is his female counterpart, and they find comfort in each other's searching and personal struggles. I liked their romance, but Folly was very naïve and overly concerned with what people thought of her. She was very bright but emotionally immature, and that was a flaw she needed to overcome. Rinelle Grey does not write perfect people, and their journey to understanding themselves and their situations is part of the story-telling that has become a pattern with her books. Her heroes and heroines have to dig deep and rally. Well, and defeat the bad guys, fall in love, live up to expectations and save the day. Simple, really.

By Brenda Telford Reckless Rescue. When Tyris read the letter from the government which he had received one morning, wife Milandra was scathing in her response to the orders it contained. Realizing he had hidden something from her all this time caused her to react quickly and without thought. Tyris was devastated – the love he had for his wife was about to be put to the extreme test. What was he to do?The Colonies were made up of various surviving planets, and Tyris lived on Urslat. It was the only life he had known, but as an extremely good pilot he was used to flying out and about in the solar system, searching for the uninhabited planets which might hold the fuel they needed for survival. So he decided to head off on his own, to find one such planet and therefore return to the good graces of his government, and especially his wife.Marlee lived on the planet Zerris; this was a planet covered in a gas which caused infertility among the young people – theirs was a dying race, with only approximately 100 living left. The Council made the rules of their small village, hoping to be able to work out a way to repopulate, therefore keeping their people going. When Marlee was forced to separate from her partner and choose another, she realized she had had enough. When Tyris’ spaceship crashed on Zerris, Marlee was the first to reach his ship. He was unconscious and bleeding, but with the help of other villagers they managed to take him back to the community hall where the nurse tended to him. Recovering, but realizing a winter harsher than any he had encountered before would keep him from leaving, Tyris began to participate in the lives of the villagers, and especially Marlee. Living in Marlee’s house, he learned of the Council’s rules, the ways of Zerris and the horrors of their lives.Forced together, Marlee and Tyris began to feel a deep attraction to each other. But this couldn’t work, it wouldn’t work – would it? Nothing was as it should be; what would they do? Were they prepared to go against the Council, the rules which they said were for the good of everyone? Would Tyris ever see his family again? What a fantastic story! Reaching the end, I realized there is another book following this one….I will be picking it up as soon as I can! The author, Aussie Rinelle Grey, has a wonderful imagination, with the plot flowing beautifully, the intrigue keeping me turning the pages. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this novel.Reckless Rebellion.Continuing on immediately from the ending of Reckless Rescue, Tyris and Marlee were very close to Tyris’ home planet, Urslat, at last. But the General wasn’t expecting Tyris, as he had been gone for over nine months – he had been thought to have perished, with his family even holding a memorial for him. So when the spaceship was within radio distance, and Tyris contacted the Space Station, everyone was shocked to say the least.Docking and being escorted by soldiers was a shock, but Tyris was assured it was routine. As they both headed into different medical rooms for their examinations, Marlee was slightly terrified. Her home planet of Zerris was nothing like Urslat; she was feeling overwhelmed by it all. And a little worried as she also wondered if she were pregnant – a possibility which should have been impossible! The shocks kept coming for Marlee – she found herself sitting in the waiting room waiting for Tyris beside Milandra, who turned out to be Tyris’ wife – something Tyris had not bothered to tell her. The secret of their love for each other would have to remain just that – a secret. Could they keep that secret though? With Urslat having rules which were strict in the extreme, with all sorts of recriminations if one disobeyed those rules, Tyris and Marlee knew they had no choice but to wait and bide their time. But suddenly danger was just around the corner – Marlee had to make a choice, and fast. What would happen to Marlee and Tyris? Would they even have a future, or was it the worst thing they had ever done, to leave Zerris for Urslat?I thoroughly enjoyed this, the second in the Barren Planet series. The new characters which were introduced are well crafted and easy to know. Getting to know Tyris’ family was great, especially his younger brother Kerit, and it’s exciting to learn the third in the series will be Kerit’s story. I have no hesitation in recommending Aussie author Rinelle Grey and her Barren Planet series to all readers of fantasy and science fiction.Reckless Recon.Kerit was feeling restless – three weeks on the space ship Resolution was beginning to wear thin. With over a thousand people on board, little irritations seemed to be flaring everywhere. Plus Marlee, Kerit’s sister-in-law was in the final stages of her pregnancy and Tyris was concerned about her health as well as the responsibility of everyone on board. As the Resolution hovered high above their destination – a deserted planet which had been hit by a meteor and decimated by acid rain and intense heat – the decision to send Tyris down to investigate changed with the concern for Marlee. So Kerit, even though he had never flown a shuttle before, had a crash course from his brother and descended to the planet they had hopes would become their new home. But as he was scaling the highest mountain while trying to escape the searing heat, he literally crashed into another human being – one who definitely wasn’t meant to be there. As Folly persuaded Kerit to help her look for her father’s spaceship in return for help to reach the caves where her family and the rest of the inhabitants lived, they were suddenly frozen in terror – there was something sinister lurking nearby in the ruins of the city. They needed to escape – but how could they? With the Resolution high above them, but unable to come to their assistance, their plight was looking dire to say the least…Another wonderful instalment of the "Barren Planet Series" by Aussie author Rinelle Grey. This one follows on directly from the previous, Reckless Rebellion, easily flowing from one to the other. I thoroughly enjoyed the action and intrigue, and can’t wait for book four. I have no hesitation in recommending this series highly.

The first and second were my favorites, but only because I felt like the last one was too short. I really would have liked Kerit and Folly's story to have been fleshed out more. It was good, but felt rushed/more short story-like. Definitely glad to have discovered a new author who knows how to write such great characters you care about in very interesting settings.
