For readers of Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat comes the inspirational, untold story of impoverished children who transformed themselves into world-class swimmers. In 1937, a schoolteacher on the island of Maui challenged a group of poverty-stricken sugar plantation kids to swim upstream against the current of their circumstance. The goal? To become Olympians. They faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The children were Japanese-American, were malnourished and barefoot and had no pool; they trained in the filthy irrigation ditches that snaked down from the mountains into the sugarcane fields. Their future was in those same fields, working alongside their parents in virtual slavery, known not by their names but by numbered tags that hung around their necks. Their teacher, Soichi Sakamoto, was an ordinary man whose swimming ability didn't extend much beyond treading water. In spite of everything, including the virulent anti-Japanese sentiment of the late 1930s, in their first year the children outraced Olympic athletes twice their size; in their second year, they were national and international champs, shattering American and world records and making headlines from L.A. to Nazi Germany. In their third year, they'd be declared the greatest swimmers in the world, but they'd also face their greatest obstacle: the dawning of a world war and the cancellation of the Games. Still, on the battlefield, they'd become the 20th century's most celebrated heroes, and in 1948, they'd have one last chance for Olympic glory. They were the Three-Year Swim Club. This is their story.

The Three-Year Swim Club: The Untold Story of Maui's Sugar Ditch Kids and Their Quest for Olympic Glory, by Julie Checkoway

Review "A brightly told story of the triumph of underdogs... exuberant, well-researched...tense, vivid, and inspiring."―Kirkus Reviews"If the basis for the book doesn't sound amazing enough, how the story unfolds--Japan vying for the Olympic games, Pearl Harbor being bombed, WWII changing the world forever--allows the story and characters to evolve in uplifting and heartbreaking ways...it is evident that Checkoway's ability to set a scene is uncanny and accomplished...Depicting determination, discrimination, hope, anguish, hard work, and hard choices, Checkoway has created a sports history that is singular in its own right, and a fitting testament to the over 200 youths who swam for many reasons toward one goal: 'Olympics First! Olympics Always.'"―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Remarkable real-life account...about as underdog as it gets."―Boston Globe"An inspiring true tale of grit and determination... Checkoway skillfully weaves vivid scenes into a larger narrative with a varied cast of characters to create a stirring, though exhaustive, account ...Pair this with The Boys in the Boat."―Booklist"This story of one (at first) seemingly unremarkable man and his effect on camp children and the world of swimming is both inconceivable and dazzling. You won't want to miss it."―Book Reporter"This captivating nonfiction, featuring engaging individuals and portraying a tumultuous time in history, chronicles Hawaii's second golden age of swimming. Sports and history enthusiasts will enjoy this title as much as book clubs and general readers."―Library Journal"Checkoway carefully weaves together facts into a sweeping historical tapestry."―The Salt Lake Tribune"Checkoway's story of youthful perseverance will earn a place on the shelf with The Boys in the Boat."―The National Book Review"Save the story she has, through exhaustive research and sparkling prose."―BookPage"[A] reverent tale...Through meticulous research, Checkoway brings crisp focus to a fuzzy time in American history...The book carries hints of The Boys in the Boat...Checkoway stays true to her salvage mission. She unearths characters flawed and fetching and shines an unflinching light on race and class...glorious storytelling and a triumphant, unpredictable finish."―Minneapolis Star Tribune"This story of one (at first) seemingly unremarkable man and his effect on camp children and the world of swimming is both inconceivable and dazzling. You won't want to miss it."―Book Reporter"A good and graceful writer."―Honolulu Magazine"A made-for-the-screen story."―Outside Magazine"Exceptionally well-researched and well-written."―ESPN.com"A wild, improbable story that makes for popular Hollywood movies but rarely happens in real life. But this story's real."―Maui Time"This true story is entertaining and absorbing and good for the soul."―Sunset Magazine"A classic underdog story...Had [Checkoway] not written this book, their exact story might have never been told, but instead, American swimming's most fascinating chapter gets the shine it deserves."―Deadspin"Lively, at times history reading more dramatic than fiction...surprises wait in both the pool and in the story of these remarkable characters."―Petoskey News

By Caroline I've been waiting about four months to post my five stars and great review of Julie Checkoway's book since my independent bookseller cousins unloaded it on me in NYC after they attended book convention here in June--this rather than having to drag all their free books back with them to New Orleans, La. (Poor cousins!) Anyway, I definitely won on this one. If I could have read this book in one night, I would have. My deterrent to one-night reading was that some portions/descriptions were so good that I had to read them over at least once. I also re-read my favorite portions several times after I finished the book. Although I thought that some portions should have moved more quickly than they did (specifically the first 100 or so pages describing the children's poverty-stricken life conditions and the World War II conditions the boys had to endure while fighting,) I thought the rest of the book more than made up for it. On a personal note, one of the boys in the Three-Year Swim Club was the reason my college's rival swim team had a reputation for so many years as unbeatable! Checkoway's research was daunting and so thorough it will make your eyes "swim" if you read the chapter where she details it. Ever since I read this book in late June, I have thought that it would be a best seller and a major motion picture. If I'm wrong so be it. But if you read it, you may understand why I think so many people will be drawn to it!

By Amazon Customer Julie Checkoway brings to life one of the most remarkable “LOST” stories in athletic, Olympic and swimming history. She incorporates a fascinating history of Hawaii, Japan and the Olympics to help tell the story of a Hall of Fame swimming coach who dreamed of making champions from the children of poverty-stricken, uneducated Japanese and Philippine- American sugar cane cutters on the island of Maui, in the Hawaiian islands. The coach was Soichi Sakamoto, a regular school teacher who had no background in athletics, let alone swimming, is the true-life hero. Fueled by the success of Japanese swimmers at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Sakamoto started teaching children swimming in the dirty, muddy sugar cane-plantation irrigation ditches. Some of his swimmers did so well that he came to believe, by 1937, that some of these kids could be Olympic Champions. Thus came the idea for the “Three Year Swim Club.” It was a challenge to the kids he had been training: if they worked hard, didn’t smoke, drink or gamble, obeyed their parents and coach, in three years, some would represent the United States, in the home of their ancestors, at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, in 1940. It is both an inspirational and emotional story - against all odds - filled with tragedies and triumphs and one that changed the world of swimming for ever. The story has been likened to Unbroken and Boys on the Boat. I would add Seabiscuit to that list (as the swimmers from Maui often had bigger headlines in the nation's papers than the horse). This story will be a fantastic new exhibit at the International Swimming Hall of Fame and could make a great movie.I recommend the audible.com version, as read by Alex Chadwick, but you’ll also want the book for its photos.I also really enjoyed her presentation in San Francisco, along with two-time Olympian Steve Clark (see photo). A great job of research and story telling.Bruce WigoPresident / International Swimming Hall of Fame

By Jacqui Wittmeyer Awe-inspiring characters against all odds achieve extraordinary feats in all aspects of life, impeccably researched and well written--what more can one ask for in this extraordinary book. Thank you Julie Checkoway for so thoughtfully and skillfully telling us this unforgettable story that otherwise very well would have faded into history. I found myself thinking about excerpts long after I had left the page and throughout the day. Coach Soichi Sakamoto saw promise and potential in what others, at first glance, would dismiss as hopeless; both in the tenacious, embolden kids that he trained, as well as with the tools he resurrected (that others had discarded as junk) that he resourcefully and ingeniously engineered as cross-training tools. He is a true American hero, far ahead of his time. All members of The Three Year Swim Club should be properly recognized and commended for their truly remarkable accomplishments, both in and out of the water. For success and achievements in life are not simply measured by the end goal, but how far and swiftly one swims upstream through the overwhelming current they are up against.

This book encompasses 14 seasons, 1958-59 through 1971-72, of English League First Division football. In those 14 seasons, 11 different teams won the championship, in order: Wolverhampton; Burnley; Tottenham; Ipswich Town; Everton; Liverpool; Manchester United; Liverpool; Manchester United; Manchester City; Leeds United; Everton; Arsenal; and Derby County. Such parity, such diffusion of championship joy, such sticking of pins all over a map of England, from the big cities to the provinces, from one coast to the other, had never happened before. And almost certainly will never happen again, not with the dominance of a mere handful of wealthy clubs in the Premiership era. This was a singular period of legendary players: Billy Wright. Jimmy Greaves. Danny Blanchflower. Dave Mackay. George Best. Bobby Charlton. Denis Law. Bobby Moore. Gordon Banks. Nat Lofthouse. Alex Young. Geoff Hurst. Martin Peters. Alan Ball. Peter Osgood. Tom Finney. Johnny Haynes. Stanley Matthews. Peter Shilton. Nobby Stiles. Tommy Smith. And so many more whose talents thrilled and galvanized football fans. There were also storied managers in plenty: Matt Busby. Stan Cullis. Alf Ramsey. Bill Nicholson. Bill Shankly. Don Revie. Harry Catterick. Joe Mercer. Brian Clough. There were differences in personality, in tactics, in relationships with their players, but all were managers of vision, ambition and savvy whose single-minded purpose was to bring glory and silverware to their respective clubs during a most entertaining, competitive and panoramic epoch.

By Kristen Johnson Ingram Eliza's diary is more cogent than any novel ever written about the Civil War. General Sherman laid a track, and ELiza had to follow his footsteps through Georgia as she sought respite in her relatives' home. Her insights into war and the havoc it wrought in the South are accompanied by her own editorial comments forty-four years later. In 1864, her heart burned with hatred for the Yankees who burned houses, appropriated food and horses, and stole jewelry; in 1908, she shudders at the thought of slavery and finally begins to understand the viewpoint of her abolitionist father.I started reading this book for information; but Eliza Frances Andrew had a captivating writing style, and I was moved along by her "big picture" observations as well as the small details, such as being out of brandy--their only medicine--and the Colonel's bride, who thought her silk parasol would protect her from the rain.I haven't read a better book about the end of the COnfederacy and the beginnings of the New SOuth.

A Classic of the Genre By Kittrell Rushing Frances Andrews's War-time Journal of a Georgia Girl is a classic in the genre of non-combatant Civil War era diaries. With this 1997 release, the diary has been republished twice since the original 1908 edition. The War-time Journal is a graphic, first-person portrayal of the turmoil and tragedy of the Southern secession. The diary was written as a personal record not intended for publication. Its tone is honest, sometimes brutally so; and Fanny's observations reflect the social and cultural realities of the mid-nineteenth century. Also of significance is the journal's prologue and epilogue. Andrews added these elements in 1908, forty years after the events and opinions recorded in the 1864-1865 diary. The 1908 comments reflect wisdom gained through maturity and experience. Andrews was 25 when she wrote The War-time Journal. She was a matron of 68 when the diary and her commentary were published.Jean Berlin's foreword to the 1997 reprint of The War-Time Journal criticizes the young Fanny Andrews for what Berlin terms Andrews's class consciousness and her insensitivity to the plight of the Southern lower classes and Andrews's "unabashed racist beliefs." Berlin takes special note of Fanny's description and reaction to a "cracker" family written on February 13, 1865, when Andrews described her visit with another woman to recruit children for a Sunday School. Berlin writes in her introduction that Fanny's diary observations revealed Andrews's "complete insensitivity" towards white people less fortunate than herself. Fanny admitted to the correctness of the Berlin's criticism when, in her 1908 introduction to the journal she wrote: "To use a modern phrase, we were intensely 'class conscious' and this brought about a solidarity of feeling and sentiment almost comparable to that created by family ties..."Andrews's attitudes, her values, her beliefs recorded in the diary are those of the nineteenth century; and those views, and her honesty of opinion, make the diary valuable. The War-time Journal provides a window into the culture, the politics, and the society of the period. Together with the 1908 material, the 1864-1865 views and attitudes are tempered with the reflection and wisdom of time.Andrews's descriptions of the events surrounding the last days of the Southern Confederacy coupled with her reactions to the collapse of her aristocratic world make this diary valuable to anyone seeking first-person witness to a tragic time in the country's history.

Eliza's Diary makes you feel you are there. The first thing to do when you get the book is to tear out the distorted introduction by Jean Berlin. If you want to know of the experiences of Southern people during this war, get this diary, written at the time by one who was there, Eliza Andrews. Also check out "The Children of Pride", another great first person account.

The Northern Queen By Lily9999 I went into this book a little prejudiced...I had always read books where Emma was the heroine and Aefgifu the villain. But, I was curious to see if the author could pull it off. She did...magnificently! This is the story of Aelfgifu, first wife of Canute, King of England, Denmark and Norway. Her family had a very rough existence under Aethelred the Unready. Her father killed and her brothers blinded. Her family had been a powerful force in Northumbria so she was considered a politically appropriate match for Canute. In The Northern Queen it is a love match, as well.We get to tag along as Aelfgifu goes through all the trials and tribulations of being a medieval queen. From being terrified for her children's lives to ruling territories in her husband's name. She had to deal with a jealous second wife, Emma, who came from a very powerful family, herself. A family that got Emma crowned as queen, while Aelfgifu was pushed into the background, or was she? This book has it all...heroines, villains, battles, love and hate! Adventures and political scheming abound! And, importantly for me, no anachronisms. Kelly Evans knows her history and is a gifted storyteller.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A woman of spirit in an impossible situation By Mercedes Rochelle In the early days of the Viking conquest, Canute took a wife. She was a daughter of the pro-Danish northern aristocracy, where Swegn Forkbeard and his son could rely on strong support. This could certainly have been a love match, and so it was in The Northern Queen. For a while, at least, Aelfgifu basked in Canute’s glory. Although they were married More Danico (in the Danish way), their union was recognized even after he became king. Alas, Aelfgifu had no reason to suppose she would be other than Canute’s queen, so she was in for a big shock when Canute announced he would marry Aethelred’s widow, the Norman Emma, in a Christian ceremony. It was all for reasons of state. By way of compensation, Canute set Aelfgifu up to rule the north as his “deputy”, so to speak. Small compensation it proved, nonetheless. What we see in this novel is a lot of frustration, a lot of waiting, and much rancor.Queen Emma is portrayed as an incorrigible villain, able to strike from a long distance away; I think this is a little over the top but it does add tension to the plot. Emma was as jealous of Aelfgifu as the other way around, and the venomous contention between them plagued Aelfgifu for the rest of her days. This competition was passed on to their sons, and Canute’s inheritance was bitterly fought. There’s plenty of evidence that Canute did not put aside his first wife when he took the second. He even sent her and his first son Swegn to rule as his regents in Norway, though they were eventually ousted in a bloody coup. Did Canute misinterpret Aelfgifu’s capacity to rule, or was she doomed from the start? It’s hard to say. She tries her best without much help from his end aside from a few words of encouragement. She must have felt pretty much abandoned by this point.I was curious to know how Kelly was going to handle her son’s reign, for Harold Harefoot has not been treated kindly by historians. However, in this novel it was his mother who took the reins of government into her own hands, at least initially, relieving him of responsibility. The sequence of events is a bit jumbled, and we don’t get a good feel for Harold as king. How deeply implicated was he in the torture and murder of Alfred Aetheling? Alas, we are not to know, for the most damning accusation normally laid against Harold—and Godwine—was deflected to Emma. Aelfgifu’s rival knew no bounds.Overall, I think Aelfgifu was nicely portrayed in this novel, rounding out the usual one-dimensional descriptions given by historians. She is very much a flesh-and-blood character, and the author did a good job describing how a woman of her spirit could deal with the impossible position Canute put her in. This is a fine debut novel, very well written and a smooth read.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A historical fiction joy of a read By Brian Risius Beautifully written. Was a pleasure to see the point of view from the wife's perspective of a turbulent time in England. You get to see the protagonist, Aelfgifu, at her strongest and her weakest. I'm the kind of reader that prefers books with more action, but I was hooked on this one until I ended three days after I started. It is definitely a book worth buying and reading.

The Bad Boys of Destiny are back and this playboy billionaire has his sights set on more than just a merger.

Colt King has spent his whole life trying to prove he's not the trash his hometown of Destiny, Nevada, thought he and his brothers were. As soon as he was old enough he left town, vowing to make a name for himself and never looking back at the place that looked down on him. But that plan goes out the window when his ailing elderly aunt asks him to come home.

He begrudgingly returns to help the woman who raised him. But he's no longer the poor kid from the bad part of town. He's the ruler of a custom car empire and a financial genius. He arrives expecting a boring stay, but when he walks into his childhood home to find a woman in nothing but her underwear pointing a shotgun at his face, he knows his trip home will be a memorable one. With his aunt sick and forcing him to help her restore her fledgling hair salon, he has more than enough on his plate. Colt has no idea that her sexy tenant, Zanna, is going to be the cause of his many sleepless nights.

Zanna Jacobs came to the ghost town of Destiny to stay out of trouble and stay the hell away from men. She's got a serious thing for bad boys that's she trying to kick, and when she lays her eyes on the brutishly handsome Colt, she knows he's got bad news written all over him. He's not the typical thug she goes for: He's too clean cut, too good looking, and too cold--and when he comes to take over her salon, she's not going to take it. Zanna decides to show him exactly who the boss is. Colt is used to people following his orders, and when Zanna challenges his every word he finds her infuriating and incredibly sexy. He can't keep his hands off her...and knows that once he returns to Las Vegas, all bets are off...

I requested an ARC of Sugar Jamison's novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed meeting the King brothers. The school of hard knocks taught them growing up that they could only rely on each other. Duke, Colt and Levi used the lessons learned from a dark childhood and have become successful business men. I am so hoping Ms. Jamison makes a series out of these brothers. Any story centered around brooding sexy males would be worth a look. Throughout the story there were hints of a series so I hope it will be followed through. The Bad Boy CEO is the middle brother, Colt's story. In no way could Colt be describe as wearing his heart on his sleeve. He keeps his emotions stored away and focuses on making money for the business he and his brothers own. The human calculator (my nickname for Colt) uses work to escape all the pain from his past. Zanna has endured her share of heartache. In order to make a fresh start she left the past behind and moved on literally. New location, new people everything was going fine until Colt comes along and upends everything. Sugar Jamison is an author that is on the verge of big things. She took a story of heartbreak and bitterness and turned it into a sweet, sexy, gutsy novel that is just as filled with laughter as it is tears. I loved it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Bad Boy CEO By Amy This book starts a new series that will feature the King brothers: Colt, Duke, and Levi. This book specifically features Colt, the CEO behind Kings Customs. He's helped build himself and his brothers up from their less-than-ideal childhoods in Destiny, Nevada. When the Aunt that raised them gets sick, the King boys head home again. For Colt this is the first time he's been back to Destiny in years. He has no fond memories of the town and it's people, but when he meets Zanna, a woman whom his Aunt took in, Colt begins to think that maybe he needs to rethink his ideas of happiness.I really like a "going-home" story trope and I think the story started out really strong in that regard. Obviously the King brothers have a lot of history to face by coming back to their hometown.I loved the interaction between Zanna and Colt. Colt always tries to be in control so it's funny when he comes up against Zanna who doesn't let anyone boss her around.Where the story fell a little bit for me was that there was too much crammed into the story. Of course Zanna has a history and the reason she's in Destiny has to be dealt with. Then there's Colt's lasvish Vegas lifestyle. He's not meant to stay in Destiny forever, so issues with the growing attraction between himself and Zanna have to be figured out. There are other plotlines in the book to be followed as well, but my point is that all of these things are introduced in the story. Because there was so many things to take care of before the end of the book, some things got rushed. For me, this was especially true with Zanna's past. Zanna is continually making references (internally) to her past and what she's doing in Destiny. I felt like it should have played a bigger part, but instead the resolution kind of gets added as an afterthought to make sure all the loose threads were accounted for. This isn't the only instance where something like this happens in the book, but it was the biggest one for me.All together, I thought it was a pretty good romance. I loved how brothers Levi and Duke's stories are unfolding in the background of this one, and I'm interested to see if, when they take the spotlight, if their books will coincide with this one or if they will follow their own timeline.Besides a few minor problems I found, I definitely think this is a worthy read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lots of Sass By ShanCol19 I thought this was really great!! I really liked Zanna; she was smart and tough, and I like how she stands up for herself and doesn't hold her opinions in. I like honesty in characters, and I like when characters don't play tons of games with each other. Colt was also great, I like that he's a bit stiff and controlled; it makes it more satisfying when they can't maintain their composure, and go off the rails a bit. It's good that he wasn't a man slut because I am getting really tired of that type of male character. I loved his family dynamics, and I am really looking forward to his brother's books; I'm not huge on the finding out you have a mystery child storyline, but I'll get past it because I like the characters. I like the setting, I enjoy small town stories because I like quirky side characters. Zanna and Colt are very steamy together, and the scenes were scorching! Zanna and Colt's meeting scene was great, and I liked how they evolved. There wasn't a lot of meat to this story, but this is a fairly short book, so it didn't really bother me, and I enjoy books that are mainly about the development of a connection between 2 people, and there was enough content to be good, and the characters are terrific, so that added a lot to the story. Great story with potential to be a great series! I loved Sugar Jamison's Perfect Fit series, and this series seems to be another series by her that I will love as well.

This volume offers a comprehensive and authoritative account of botanical knowledge in China from ancient times to the end of the seventeenth century. In this highly illustrated study, Georges Métailié explores the perception and use of a wealth of plants and vegetation in China before the introduction of modern botany. Drawing from a number of original Chinese texts, which have been translated for the first time, Métailié gives new insights into a variety of aspects of plant knowledge in ancient China. Chapters are devoted to traditional botany and sources of classification, aquatic plants, fungi, horticultural techniques, fruit production, grafting and the influences of ancient Chinese plant culture on Europe. This volume combines technical expertise in the identification of plants with historical and anthropological sensitivity to propose a new, non-teleological view of scientific knowledge about the botanical world in ancient China.

This is the sad story of a disaster that never should have happened. When the steamship Vestris pulled away from her Hoboken pier on a sunny day in November 1928, headed for Buenos Aires, carrying almost 8,000 tons of cargo, 128 civilian passengers, and 197 crew members, all seemed well. In truth, she was a decrepit old ship, not seaworthy in anything but the best of weather. The weather on this trip would prove too severe for this tired vessel. Even so, the Vestris might have survived had it not been for a series of blunders by both the ship’s crew and her officers. These errors, combined with a sinister turn of events below decks, doomed the ship. She went down to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, November 12, 1928, with the loss of 111 lives, most of them passengers—including all 13 children and 28 of the 36 women. There were 214 survivors, 60 of them passengers. These are their stories as told in their own words.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It didn't need to happen By F S Frederick While a bit tedious at times, the book presents a very complete and interesting account of the last voyage and sinking of the "Vestris". The ship needed many repairs (so much so that she should never have been allowed to sail), was grossly overloaded, and with a seemingly timid captain. She was unable to make it through a storm that many others ships could because of her wretched condition. Water was leaking (more like pouring) into the ship from various openings that had not been (and could not be) properly sealed. Her cargo may have shifted. Her list became more and more severe, making it difficult to launch boats, and the captain waited too long to send an SOS; all this caused a great loss of life. The operating company was well aware of the "Vestris' " appalling condition, but was only interested in the money she could generate. The official summary of the wreck and the company's neglect is a bit dry, but makes very good reading.

The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshwayo with which the Zulu king could not comply. Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met. The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including a stunning opening victory by the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, as well as for being a landmark in the timeline of imperialism in the region. The war eventually resulted in a British victory and the end of the Zulu nation's independence.

The overall is a gripping look at a long forgotten conflict. Atrocities were committed on both sides but it has to be remembered that the Zulus were fighting for their own land.

We are fortunate to live in a magical time in the constantly evolving field of photography. Absolutely anything is possible with a quality camera and photo-editing software. While new digital technologies make the creative process unlimited, it also means that we as photographers must continually push to be the very best at what we do. Cameras are affordable to the masses, and our key to real success in the portrait photography industry lies in our creativity and style rather than our equipment and gear.In this book, author Travis Gadsby presents a sublime collection of 60 creativity-inspiring images from a range of talented photographers whose styles and photographic techniques vary markedly. The book is divided into five sections, each of which is centered around a particular creativity-enhancing topic: (1) Quick and Easy: Ideas That Can Be Added on the Fly, (2) Location-Inspired Ideas, (3) Wardrobe-Inspired Ideas, (4) Prop-Inspired Ideas, and (5) Creative Lighting Treatments. Within each section, you’ll find a sumptuous variety of looks (ever considered photographing your subjects underwater, creating sparks with steel wool, recording the movement of a dancer whose body is dusted with flour, or creating steampunk portraits?). You’ll also discover how the portrait concept came to light and will get insight into the strategies the photographer used to pose, light, and style the portrait to perfection. In modern portraiture, it’s sometimes creative postproduction work that makes the image sing. Gadsby shines a light on some terrific image-editing work discussing the tools and techniques used to create the final portrait. With the wide range of creative portraits and specialized applications depicted in this book, you’ll find lots of great ideas to expand your photographic repertoire, reinvent your style, and stay at the top of your game.

By Bob I bought this book hopeful for new ideas and inspiration and I was met with a collection of heavily photoshopped images with little to no explanation of the techniques and equipment used, recommended base settings, etc. I think its an interesting coffee table book of images, but not something that will help me with my goal of getting better with portraiture, and I am returning it.

For more than fifty years, Halley Research Station—located on the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea—has collected a continuous stream of meteorological and atmospheric data critical to our understanding of polar atmospheric chemistry, rising sea levels, and the depletion of the ozone layer.  Since the station’s establishment in 1956, there have been six Halley stations, each designed to withstand the difficult climatic conditions. The first four stations were crushed by snow. The fifth featured a steel platform, allowing it to rise above snow cover, but it, too, had to be abandoned when it moved too far from the mainland, making its habitation precarious. Completed in 2012, Halley VI is the winning design from an international competition organized by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). It is the world’s first fully relocatable research station, comprising eight modules fitted with hydraulic legs and skis. This book tells the extraordinary story of this iconic piece of architecture’s design and creation and the challenge of building in an extreme environment, illustrated with drawings, sketches, and previously unpublished photographs.

Review “The next best thing to getting a personal tour of the station, designed to be an especially welcoming home in a place where the snow never melts.” (Boston Globe 2016-01-15)“When your first five research stations get pummeled by the harsh polar environment, build one you can move. . . . Halley VI sits above the snow cover to avoid getting buried, but this version can also move toward the mainland as the shelf sloughs towards the sea. . . . The making of Halley VI is documented in Ice Station, . . . with photographs by James Morris.” (Air & Space, Smithsonian 2016-01-15)“Antarctica is on Earth, but it feels alien—a vast, cold, rapidly melting desert populated by scientists and emperor penguins. So it makes sense that today’s Antarctic research stations look a lot like spaceships: They’re often the only things protecting their inhabitants from inhospitable places people really shouldn’t be living in. Only recently, though, they’ve become works of fine art, and Ice Station helps drive that point home.” (Wired 2016-01-15)“Ice Station offers an inside glimpse at a place few will ever see.” (Discover 2016-01-15)“The British Antarctic Survey launched a research station now setting a new standard for architecture in extreme environments: Halley VI. . . . Ice Station chronicles the design and construction of the science outpost. . . . Morris’s photographs, diagrams, and sketches give a full view of all the modular station’s components, from cockpit roof lights where residents can view the auroral lights in the winter, to the social module with its bar lounge (likely an equally essential winter feature).” (Hyperallergic 2016-01-15)“Halley VI is the first movable research station, built out of eight independent but linked modules containing dormitories, generators and labs. . . . Few people will ever visit, so Ice Station tells its story.” (New Scientist 2016-01-15)“In one of the most inhospitable places on earth, the British have built not just a shelter, but a piece of architecture.”   (Architects' Journal 2016-01-15)“A fascinating insight into design for extreme environments, with a history of the polar mission together with Broughton's further adventures in building for sub-zero science.” (Wallpaper 2016-01-15)

Will their love be enough to bond a human and a dragon shifter forever? *** Book Two: A Dive with Her Dragon Sassy, curvy Natalie Richards writes about paranormal romance by day but when her hunky mysterious neighbor offers her a story she can’t resist, she knows it has to be too good to be true. Will Natalie be able to give up everything to be Aidan's mate? *** Book Three: A Flight with Her Dragon Kelsie Bell, an outgoing voluptuous college grad, has always known that when the right man comes along, she’ll know right away. And if she decides to be with that man, it will be for good, not until someone better comes along. Of course, she was in no hurry to find such a man — the right time will come eventually, she’d always known that. So when a chance encounter places her in the company of handsome muscular stranger who is looking at her like she’s his favorite treat, she can’t help but feel the unexplained attraction grow stronger and stronger. Jaydan Auger has lost all hope at finding his true mate. Sure, his brothers have found theirs and proved that it could happen, but being the oldest and still having no luck at finding his dream wife had him all but give up on the idea. That’s when a sassy, gorgeous, curvy Kelsie shows up in his yard. All Jaydan can think of is how can he convince her to never leave his side. Of course, first, he’ll have to explain to her that he’s not just a man, but something so much bigger… Both Kelsie and Jaydan know they belong together, but nothing that’s meant to be great is easy, is it? Will they be able to overcome their obstacles and enemies? Will true love and destiny persevere after all?

Jax and Dori start off the set. I thought it was really nice that Jax had known Dori for years, but waited until she was older and had gone to college. It was also also neat that Dori was of Romanian decent. Natalie and Aiden follow. Natalie is afraid of water and Aiden is a water Dragon, not exactly a match made in heaven. Aiden is so patient and helps Natalie in several ways. Lastly is Jayden and Kelsie. Once they meet they won't be deterred from being together, unless someone separates them. With each book the mythology grows and is fleshed and out. The characters are likeable and you want to read about them. These stories brighten your day!

Three Book Set By Ingrid Stephanie Jordan Title: The Immortal Dragon BrothersA Complete Series Books 1 - 3Author:  Desirae  GroveReviewer: Stephanie Jordan♧♧♧♧♧♧♧♧♢♧♧♧♧♧♧♧♧♧♧♧Title: A RIDE WITH HER DRAGON                        BOOK 1This is my first book to review for this Author. I love almost all Shifters and Dragons I adore. This book was cute and not a bad read BUT to Tame for me.The Dragonmen were tame and the sex was even tamer for a dragon shifter. But he did have a big one lol..Dori loved to cook and bake and always did a lot of it. Dori's ancestors were from Romania. Her grandmother raised her with a Romanian Heritage, she could read and speak the ancient language. Oh how Dori missed her grandma.Aidan just moved in the same apartment building as Dori, they've been friends for many year.Aidan and Jax were brother and Dragon shifters. Jax's met Dori years ago and knew what she was to him. But he waited for her to grow up a little first. Like I said it's a cute little love story. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡Title: A DIVE WITH HER DRAGON                      BOOK 2And the saga continues yes, this can be a stand alone book. The book A RIDE WITH HER DRAGON  was Aidan, Jax's and Dori and now A Dive with her Dragon happens to be Aidan and Natalie with Jax's and Dori making an appearance. Aidan being a rare Water Dragon. I wonder if Jaydan's story is next? I have to say I like this book a lot better. I also realize the explicit sexual interactions will not be in these reads. Plus Jax being centuries old believes no sex before marriage. It makes Natalie happy too.Natalie Richards is an editor for Stories magazine. She is also writing a book too. And has been dating boring Chad, I meanbooorrrriinngg. Now she sees a new tenant in the building his eyes are mouth watering, jaws open,  to die for. Plus Natalie is scared to death to be in water.Aidan Augar is a Marine Biologist and has a grant to research the sea, But right now the only eyes he has is for Natalie could she be the one?  ♤♤♤♤♤♤●●●♤♤♤♤♤♤●●●♤♤♤♤♤♤Title: A FLIGHT WITH HER DRAGON                           BOOK 3If you read my first and second review for this author you see the story of Aidan and Jax and now we have Jaydan,  I love the name Jaydan.Jaydan Auger was the last brother to find his mate. What a site she was, no way could he believe that the women climbing on his truck was his mate. Jaydan never thought he would find her. Especially since he was the oldest and both his brother's already found their mates. NOW he must wine and dine her so she will fall in love with him. Jaydan wasn't a charismatic kind a guy, he didn't say mushy romantic things.Kelsie Bell loved her Victorian Home she inherited from her grandmother. Going to estate and  yard sales was so much fun, she just loved it. Kelsie had to pass up many beautiful deals because she didn't have a way to transport everything. Then she saw a vintage truck for sale, it was just perfect. The owner was perfect too, mouth watering, jaw dropping handsome. Then he started talking and Kelsie could only stare than he acted cocky and the sassy Kelsie's came out. Besides men like him didn't go for BBW that's for sure, but that doesn't stop her from being attracked to him. OMG he asked me to go out to dinner. What a treat for the author to bring it out in a box set.Book One: A Ride with Her DragonDori who had a Romanian background lived more of what people that was a new age life. She was often mistaken as wiccan since she had a herb garden and way she decorated her apartment. She was one who lived a natural life style and was a vegan.Dori had this huge crush on Jax. She truly knew very little about him. Though Dori was one that could read people and get a feel of them. She thought Jax as an old soul and god did he look like a freaking greek god. Dori would of never dreamed that Jax was a dragon shifter.Jax was handsome and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Dori was his mate. He had wanted her for so long but his brother had held him off due to Dori not being ready. See she had to be willing to except who he was or he would be destine to spend his life unmated. He only had one shot for you only get one mate.I loved the little sayings that Dori would use which would catch Jax and his brother off guard. It would be saying that was reference to what a dragon would do. Sorry want to know what they were then you will have to read the book.Is Dori to the place in her life that she can expect what Jax really is or will Jax spend the rest of his life mourning for what could have been? What will it take to convince her if she does except? If you love shifter books then you will love the story of Dori and Jax. It is truly a story worth reading.Book Two: A Dive with Her DragonNatalie was a romance writer. She was dating this guy by the name of Chad but Chad liked the ability to swipe her off her feet. She wanted the romance that she writes and reads about. She had met this handsome guy by the name of Aidan. He was her neighbor. He was nice looking and easy to talk to . The more time she spent with him the more she was falling for him and knew she needed to end things with Chad.Aidan was a water dragon. He was living his life on land in hopes to find his true mate. When he laid eyes on Natalie he knew his search was over. There would be a process on claiming her. Dragons mate for life. He will need to tell her his secret and it will be her chose whether she excepts him or not. If she decides to except him and wants to become his mate then they must get approval from the elders. Natalie is afraid of water so that will be another thing she will have to face. Will she except Aidan? Can she overcome her fear?Book Three: A Flight with Her DragonI have so enjoyed the Auger brothers and the search for their fated mates. Aidan, Jax, and Jayden have been just mouthwatering.Kelsie is not only beautiful but strong headed. She does not care to stand up to you if needed and that is one thing Jayden loved about her. I loved the fact that it stated she felt like she was flying when she had the top down to her vintage 65 mustang. How suiting is that.Kelsie loved buying antiques. Problem was she did not have the room for a lot of things when it came to her mustang, so she was on look for a truck. It must of been fate that stepped in because that is what led her to Jayden.Jayden who was a dragon shifter could not believe he found her. The woman looking at his truck was his true mate. The problem is they get one shot. Only one true mate per dragon shifter. If she does not except him then he is destine to spend his life alone. How would you even go about explain that you are a dragon with out scaring or coming off sounding crazy. As Kelsie and Jayden get to know each other Kelsie’s life becomes in danger. Jayden must find away to save her. Will she even want him after finding out he and his family is the source of her danger?
