Xenophon of Athens was a Greek poet, historian, soldier and philosopher, living at a time of momentous events in Ancient Greek history. He wrote about the philosophy of Socrates, the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, and the Persian expedition that formed the basis of his most famous work, Anabasis. In addition to his own works, he influenced the account of the Peloponnesian War written by the famous Greek historian Thucydides. Although he was recognized as a great writer and poet in his lifetime, Xenophon’s involvement with Spartan politics and fighting led to his exile from Athens, and his association with Socrates probably did not help. His short treatise on Sparta’s government is considered one of the first examples of political philosophy.

Brief but beautiful gems of wisdom By Apuleius Although I am not an expert on horses (my three still accept me after two years), I enjoyed the recommendations given by Xenophon, a man who obviously loved horses and knew the skills and knowledge required to acquire, maintain and show a horse. Some recommendations I will leave to experts, such as the advice that "the hair on the spine (and dorsal region) ought not to be touched with any instrument whatever; the hand alone should be used to rub and smooth it." Finally, I can confirm from a dear Greek friend who is an expert equine vet and scholar, Xenophon's golden rule is absolutely correct: "The one best precept -the golden rule- in dealing with a horse is never to approach him angrily." It was a joy to read some advice that is more than two thousand years old. And even though it is a brief book, it will be reread several times.

No true horseman or horsewoman should go through life without reading On Horsemanship. While there are some odd grammatical/typo type issues in this version, it still has little nuggets of information that are important to learn.

I however read The Horse Dancer by Jo Jo Meyes and she refers to this book in the context of her story which is the reason for me purchasing this book. The Horse Dancer is highly recommended though. I'm not training a horse so this book doesn't really apply to me but it's written in an old style of writing and could be interesting if you have your own horse.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is a Beautiful Book! By Jennifer Harrison From the introduction to the index, there are pictures of Lucy Willis' gorgeous paintings on every page, including double-page spreads, and each picture is accompanied by comments about choice of location, how it was affected by light or shade, or how she went about painting it. The book is packed with information, including five demonstrations. It's not a book which covers how to do basic washes, etc., but complete beginners (and I am one) can learn so much about the interaction of sunlight and shadows. This is not only a detailed book, but a lovely book to simply enjoy reading.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and Informative By Julia P. A beautiful book by one of the masters of the technique. Numerous reproductions used to illustrate all aspects of light and shadow in watercolour, and Willis pretty much covers every angle. I particularly enjoyed the "Themes and Variations" section, which demonstrates her range, as well as the possibilities of working in watercolour. So lovely to look at that it works as both a coffee table book and a manual. Highly recommended for anyone interested in watercolour or painting in general.A beautiful book by one of the masters of the technique. I really do not know where to start telling you about my friend Butch. He really isn't anyone special. He is just your average guy that has had a not so average life. Not so average if you consider knowing people that committed suicide and murder, throw in a touch of romance, a smidgen of humor and some sadness, with a sort of Huckleberry Finn beginning. You've pretty much got Butch!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The holiday season is a season for love! By Jami Wagner Love is in the air!CHRISTMAS CLASH reminded me why the holidays bring out the best in us and why it’s the perfect time of the year to fall in love!Once again Volney has created some witty characters. Try as they might to dislike one another, nothing can stop them from their real feelings.Candace Ellison….I wish I had this woman’s determination and brilliant mind. She won’t take no for an answer. Not from anyone. When someone threatens to take her flower shop away, she will stop at nothing to keep it right where it is. Even if that means working with the guy next door who also happens to be her worst enemy.Luke Carrigan…his patience with such a wired woman is impeccable. He puts most men to shame and has most women swooning. When he learns he is about to lose the family Pub, he puts all his trust into the one woman he can’t stand to be around. Or…so he thought. Soon he finds himself wanting nothing more than to be around her.The entertainment is nonstop with Christmas Clash. It starts out with the male POV which isn’t something I see very often but boy, did it put you right into the whole story. And of course…the epilogue – Amazing! Brilliant! Revenge sucks, Mr. Dean!HOLIDAY HOOPLA is Christmas story for everyone to enjoy. From the very first page its obvious Halle knows exactly how to gain someone’s attention. Her determination and devotion to her business is how she becomes involved with Blake. Of course his handsome and sexy cowboy ways help to persuade her.Blake may be undecided in parts of his life, but one thing he is sure of, Halle is the perfect distraction this holiday season.Volney doesn’t skip a beat when it comes to capturing your attention. The excitement this book contained and the way I could relate to specific scenes had me hooked! She knows exactly how to pull you into her book and keep you there until you have turned the last page.Candlelight is romantic and that’s exactly what CANDLELIGHT CONSPIRACY is all about. Toss in delectable food and a little music and this is one book you'll want to read. The characters in the story are engaging. Although you see a glimpse or two of their working life, the intimate setting of their home lives brings out the connection between Marc and Sophie.I enjoyed how quickly the darkness in their pasts was resolved. The behavior each character displayed throughout the story was consistent and fit each of them beautifully. They both came off as people who knew exactly what they wanted. A bump in the road wasn’t about to change anything. As usual, Volney’s quick dialogue has you hooked to the page and pulls you into the story.Candlelight Conspiracy is the perfect blend of sexy and touching. If you’re looking for a little spark to your afternoon, it’s the perfect book for you!Who knows…maybe you’ll discover your nemesis is really the love of your life. The holiday season is a season for love!

From the earliest settlements in the Americas, the British Empire grew to encompass nearly 25 percent of the earth’s landmass. Created from a diverse array of companies, colonies and dominions, these nations helped the United Kingdom to develop into the world's leading power by the end of the 1800s. Driven by a desire to expand economically and commercially, Britain was driven by mercantilism. Over time, the connections between Britain and its empire grew increasingly close. By the time of the First World War, the colonies were a main source of soldiers, supplies and support for Britain. Following the Second World War, the United Kingdom began a gradual policy of de-colonization. As colonies became independent, self-governing nations, they were offered to join the British Commonwealth. Encompassing a total of 53 nations, the modern Commonwealth is a throwback to Britain's colonial past. In his book entitled The Rise and Fall of The British Empire: Mercantilism, Diplomacy and the Colonies author Phillip J. Smith chronicles the ascent and descent of this once great empire.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The author should be paying you to proofread his book By KPJ "In his book entitled ____ author ______ ..." This familiar pattern, with its familiar missing comma, is used to introduce each and every one of the books published by Make Profits Easy LLC in every single one of their blurbs. This book is quite possibly the worst book I have bought in years. I think many of the other reviewers may be astroturfing.Awkward language, misused words, amateur writing style, awful font, nonstandard punctuation, and no paragraph justification leave me little faith that the author gave proper treatment to his epic topic. The chapter on World War I is 9 paragraphs long. Not pages. Paragraphs. But the font is so huge and there's so much white space, he managed to get a few pages out of it.I have no faith in the content of this book, and indeed I fear I may have become stupider reading it.Who is the author of this terrible tome? Beats me. They don't bother to describe Phillip J. Smith's qualifications. Nothing in the book is footnoted nor sourced. Oh, it does have 5-book bibliography, although it doesn't specify what information came from which. I really doubt that Smith added any original value at all through his telling, as he's obviously not a professional historian, so you might as well get his supposed source books instead. They are:Abernathy, David. The Dynamics of Global Dominance, European Overseas Empires 1415-1980 (Yale University Press)Ferguson, Niall. The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power (Basic Books)James, Lawrence. The Rise and Fall of the British Empire (St. Martin's Press)Kennedy, Paul. The Rise and Fall of the Great Power (Harper Collins)Porter, Bernard. The Lion's Share: A Short History of British Imperialism 1850-2004 (Edinburgh Gate)Note how Smith shameless steals the title of source #3. Classy.

For more details about this miserable excuse for a scholarly piece of work see the other reviwers who judgedthis to be worthy of one or zero stars. I gave up after 4 chapters and then, on reading other reviwers discovered that information I was not alone in my displeasure. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR VALUABLE TIME.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The writing style is readable and I would recommend it. B By Benjamin H. Flemingexcellentaccountonthecourse of thevye This book has many interesting detail about the various parts of the former British empire. However it should have had more detail of the Boers in South Africa and about the Maoris in New Zealand. The book could have had more analysis and reasoning. The writing style is readable and I would recommend it. B. Fleming

She longs for the arms of a strong man around her, and for a child of her own. But the Chicago dandies don't know how to kiss a woman who is tougher than they are. Jo decides her best chance at happiness is to head out West, to the wild Montana territory, to start a new life as a mail order bride. Sam Longworth has been the Sheriff of Hope's Crossing, Montana for two miserable years. He was much happier roaming the untamed plains as a bounty hunter, bringing outlaws to justice. But that was no life for a husband or father, and his wife wanted him home, safe and sound, every night. Forced into marriage, theirs had never been a love match, but he thought warming her bed every night would be enough. Instead she left him and took a stagecoach to rendezvous with her childhood sweetheart. She vowed never to return, and died on the journey. Plagued by guilt over her death, Sam doesn't need a woman's love, he just needs a wife. He orders a mail order bride, a woman who won't make too many demands, who can build a home and give him children. Josephine fits his life perfectly, until danger follows her to her new home and he realizes she's keeping secrets that could get them both killed. Trust is a hard road for two lost souls used to keeping secrets, and their new and fragile love might not be strong enough to survive what's coming.

The Hunter Bride (Hope's Crossing Book 1), by Cynthia Woolf

Review 5 starsI loved this story the way I loved all of Ms. Woolf's other books. I especially enjoyed reading about how Jo tried to learn cooking something she didn't know and her husband thought she did. It didn't take long before he discovered her secret in the kitchen when she served him raw meat. There were surprises and secrets and lots of romance. Reviewed by: Linda TonisParanormal Romance Guild

About the Author Cynthia Woolf is the award winning and best-selling author of fifteen historical western romance books. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.Their closest neighbor was about one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. At age ten, she wrote her first romance about a little boy she liked at the time.Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity. TITLES AVAILABLE GENEVIEVE: Bride of Nevada, American Mail-Order Brides Series, Book 36THE HUNTER BRIDE - Hope's Crossing, Book 1GIDEON - The Surprise BridesMAIL ORDER OUTLAW - The Brides of Tombstone, Book 1MAIL ORDER DOCTOR - The Brides of Tombstone, Book 2MAIL ORDER BARON - The Brides of Tombstone, Book 3NELLIE - The Brides of San Francisco 1ANNIE - The Brides of San Francisco 2CORA - The Brides of San Francisco 3JAKE (Book 1, Destiny in Deadwood series)LIAM (Book 2, Destiny in Deadwood series)ZACH (Book 3, Destiny in Deadwood series)    CAPITAL BRIDE (Book 1, Matchmaker & Co. series)HEIRESS BRIDE (Book 2, Matchmaker & Co. series)FIERY BRIDE (Book 3, Matchmaker & Co. series)TAME A WILD HEART (Book 1, Tame series)TAME A WILD WIND (Book 2, Tame series)TAME A WILD BRIDE (Book 3, Tame series)TAME A SUMMER HEART (short story, Tame series)TAME A HONEYMOON HEART (novella, Tame series)  WEBSITE - cynthiawoolf.com NEWSLETTER - bit.ly/1qBWhFQ

For the last five years she’s tracked down the men who killed her parents and little brother. Finally, she captured ringleader and sent him to prison. Now Jo can begin the new life she wants more than anything, that of a wife with a husband and children. Manlier than most of the men of her acquaintance, she becomes a mail-order bride. Sam Longworth is the sheriff of Hope’s Crossing. He wants a wife to cook and clean and give him children, a demure miss who won’t give him any trouble. One who will be happy with the simple life he leads. A nemesis from Jo’s past shows up with murder on his mind and Jo is drawn back into her old life in order to protect not only herself but Sam. Both Sam and Jo have secrets from their past. Can they build a happy marriage when neither trusts the other with the full truth or will the secrets drive them apart?I liked this book. One of the things that drew me was the unusual life that Jo had been living and the life she was moving into. Secrets. And Jo's not the only one who has them. On the surface, Sam looks exactly like he claims he is. Well, he is but also so much more too. I'm being careful here because I don't want to give anything away. Let the secrets unfold for you like they did for me as I read this story. Don't get me wrong though, Sam IS a good man. A good man who thinks his "little woman" is okay with being ordered around. She's willing to make some changes, but that one just isn't gonna fly. Her father raised her by his side like a son and she was almost as good a bounty hunter as he was. Her womanly skills were just developing when a past bounty escaped. Prepare yourself for several more surprises. They made me smile.Several other people figure into the story and add warmth and depth to the story. All in all a good story and one I enjoyed."I received this book in exchange for an honest review"

Historical Western featuring a female bounty hunter/mail order bride By Kindle Customer Jo's father was a bounty hunter and he taught her the tricks of the trade. She became the son he never had and even when her brother was born when she was ten, she continued working with him until her brother reached the age of ten. Then her Mother insisted she start learning to manage a household. She had not gotten very far, when her family was killed by Billy Jackson and his gang. Jo spends the next five years hunting the gang and every other bounty she comes across. Finally she captures Billy Jackson and takes the bounty money she has saved and plans to start a new life.Jo started writing to Sam Longworth, the sheriff of a small mining town in Montana Territory. She thought being a mail order bride would be her best bet, because she could out do most of the men in town. She goes to his town and they are married, but Sam finds out who she is. They both have lots of secrets from each other.Billy Jackson escapes along with another dangerous outlaw. Can Jo capture him again before he threatens her new life? Can Sam allow himself to love again? Will Jo ever learn to cook?I like mail order bride books because I am so glad woman have had so many more opportunities in the last fifty years. While there are still cultures that successfully arrange marriages, it takes a lot of courage or desperation to take on marriage to a stranger. Both main characters are strong willed and capable. Jo made me laugh, but her desire for a normal life with children and love was so opposite from the way she was trained.I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

A little too much sex for me, but it was not explicit. Very much worth the read and am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, Hope's Crossing. For more than 20 years, music critic Bernard Holland reviewed the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. He reported both sides of the culture war between an honored past and radical change. Throughout his writings, Holland discusses what classical music really is, destroys the myth of high and low art, and defines the job of the music critic. Along the way, the reader will chat with Herbert von Karajan, take a plane trip with Yo-Yo Ma, and walk the slow walk with Robert Wilson.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Criticism On Performances, Enlightenment On The Craft By Garrett Zecker Music is one of my favorite experiences of being alive on the planet earth, and one of the most bizarre elements of music exists somewhere in the transliteration and opinion of music once it gets into the hands of writers and critics. Sometimes it is met with great successes (33 1/3 series) and sometimes it gets really weird (pitchfork and genius). But there truly isn't anything quite like good music criticism and appreciation. In Something I Heard, Bernard Holland's collected career retrospective is an incredibly beautiful, succinct, and well-written look into his twenty-year tenure on the New York Times. The essays are mostly short and beautiful. They approach specifics about performances that I missed (but will go back and find the recordings and DVDs of), but also say some incredibly astute things about music and performance as an elemental force in this lifetime. This is where Holland shines most brilliantly. His preoccupation with the question of race in performance was enlightening (such as in 'Symphonic Blackness' where I realized I had never even thought of some of the points he raises about the strict segregation of classical performance), and his intense focus on Mahler and Wagner as defining composers was similar to my own – I was quite happy that many of the reviews approached their works that I was familiar with.I was also impressed where Holland was able to share some really great writing in general. His question about the nature of Opera, Musical Theater, and the role of the audience in 'Information or Beauty I' was staggeringly astute. His humor and self-deprecating analysis of getting older that takes the form of a musical satire in the halls of a drug store in 'Duane Reade Opera' was laugh out loud funny. 'On Blogging' and 'Critics II' was simply a brilliant observation on the craft of writing for an audience itself.Overall, a really great reading experience. I devoured it in a couple nights, but it will definitely be revisited as I listen along to the specific performances that Holland mentions in these wonderful essays.

OK, this is really not a review ... simply because I am not qualified to construct sentences assembled into paragraphs that are worthy of Bernard's talent. Something I Heard is beautifully written - my first reaction was that it read more like poetry than prose. So, how to describe it? I once purchased a bottle of 30 year old Springbank Scotch whiskey. It was expensive, and very rare. It took me about 10 years to finish off as I savored it dram by dram. Each sip was magical and transported me back to Scotland. Each sip created a sensory explosion that confirmed that the bottle was worth every penny paid. There was a half inch left when I gave the bottle to a friend who, also, appreciated fine Scotch whiskey. After yet another decade slipping by between the both of us, we still talk about that Springbank 30. That's what this book is like. I dare you to just read one page and not be transported.

When the Vietnam Veteran’s tours were over, they came home to find a country divided and a nation unappreciative of their service. How they were treated, how they integrated back into society, and how their wartime experiences changed them are just some of the questions answered, as their stories unfold in Never Forgotten. Told by the Veterans themselves, these are their stories. ""The book Never Forgotten, captures 58 Veteran’s accounts and others on what it was like to experience the Vietnam War. In their own words, they talk about their return home, struggles to maintain healthy relationships, decades of recovery, and feelings of worthlessness. Many find emotional well-being and self-worth by helping other Veterans. Those of us who are Veterans or whose loved ones have served in war, know with certainty we are different when we return home, than before we marched off to war. Because of this difference, for ourselves and for those we love and enjoy having in our lives, Never Forgotten is a must read."" ~ Michael B. Christy, Lt. Col. USA (ret) and Vietnam Veteran

You need to read the emotional experiences of those that served their country and never got a Welcome Home. Many Vietnam Vets like me went into the closet about our Vietnam Service because we were hated, even though we served our country. I had a bad experience when I returned and realized I shouldn't admit or talk about my Vietnam Service until 2007.Never Forgotten was an emotional read for me, but comforting to find other Brothers that had the same experiences I did. Jenny La Sala is one of the finest persons I know, she is dedicated to the recognition those that serve and served. This book should be a high school education book, maybe the kids will read about their Grandfathers and Dads who have never talked about their Vietnam experience. In 2009 I was interviewed for 2 hours by my local newspaper and my wife overheard what I had to say. It was the first time I had opened up, or questioned by someone that wanted to know what I experienced. The reporter asked if she could talk with my wife of 25 years. The first thing she said to my wife was, "you overheard everything your husband had to say about his experiences in Vietnam, how much did you know about." I will never forget her response, "Nothing."Jenny, thanks for your efforts to help educate Americans about the Americans that served their country and had to hide it for years. I have become very proud of my service and today display my Vietnam service on hats and shirts I wear. It's funny sometimes people will ask me when did Vietnam happen and what was it. Sometimes people thank me for my service. One day I would love to get together with the guys in the book. They are truly American heros, but were never recognized for their service until people like Jenny La Sala put out books that honor there/our service. Thanks, thanks Jenny La Sala for this great book and your continued dedication to recognize all those that have served their country.

By Tom Haines "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country," is one of the sentences that we typed over and over again while learning the art of typing in high school. I don't believe most of us gave it any more thought than that. But when the war in Vietnam was becoming a reality, it became more than just words on paper. Hundreds of thousands of men from all across America headed to their selective service recruiting office to join in a cause that would give those words meaning. But after a short time, many Americans were convinced that they should in good conscious "aid their country in protest." The country became divided, and a faction took over the media and chose to attack the soldiers fighting the war along with those in Washington who made the commitment to winning, but then didn't make it possible to do that. The country became more and more fractious and confused. Who are the real enemies? But one thing stood out, those in harms way did what they committed to do and were in no way the enemy to anyone but the North Vietnamese. When it came time for the warriors of a fractured cause to return home, there was no welcome home for these heroes that lived in fear and pain of the mind and body. Returning soldiers attempted, often with great difficulty, to re-join families and communities. Most did not talk or even think about the war. Not thinking about it was hard--real hard--often impossible. Jenny La Sala has helped open up a plethora of emotions, feelings, fears, and opinions. She also created a necessary dialog that has been suppressed and locked up for decades in a decaying psyche; a psyche racked with the physical wounds of war, an intense horror of the mind imploding with the disease of PTSD and decades later with the destruction of the body from its exposure to Agent Orange. She has stepped into a void and has successfully filled it with a platform that gives many, that she has chosen, to take their stories and experiences and give us an opportunity to understand and accept those that have lived what most of us couldn't even start to feel and understand. But, after reading the stories in her book, we will begin to comprehend and empathize with those that lived, and survived the narrative captured in the 423 pages of "Never Forgotten,"---so that we will indeed 'never forget.'

Interviews with the Reluctant By Amazon Customer Jenny La Sala thru her book," Never Forgotten" has managed to pursue the memories of many Vietnam Veterans who otherwise would have gone to their graves with untold stories of their life changing events! Jenny is a writer and interviewer who through her diligence and personal warmth actually captures the interviewees emotional thoughts as critical pieces in our Countries growth and understanding of what it is like to be a participating Veteran of an unpopular war.I challenge the readers of this book not to be awestruck and emotionally affected by what this read has to offer. Jenny through her deep caring for Veterans has illuminated to excellence the art of carefully drawing delicate information from those interviewed. I am sure that many a Vietnam Veteran will benefit from the stories told as part of their own story. This may help them to resolve burning issues long hidden. My sincerest thanks to Jenny for her unquestionable hard work and caring, and the excellence of this and other works of hers that will immortalize those affected by war.Thomas B. Daly (Major US Army Retired)

It is "Lives Of The Saints With Reflections For Every Day In The Year Compiled From The 'Lives Of The Saints' By Rev. Alban Butler'. It is not an edition of Butler's. Even to call it an "abridgement" would really be pushing it, but if it had been marketed as such, I would have avoided it in the first place and not have wasted my time purchasing it and then obtaining a refund.

Saints By Timmer This is a large book on Kindle, and a lot of folks have problems with manuevering around in larger books, this one has adetailed Table of contents, by Person, by Calendar day, and by alphabet. Easy to search for me. There is a nice description of eachsaint, event or Holy Day, a Reflection, and my copy lists the page # - helpful if you're in a classroom and everyone else has a Paper book!4 stars? I personally like pictures, there are none here. I like pictures.

I bought it in kindle form in hopes it would be easier to use and I was right. I love the portability of it. The fact I don't have to scour my shelves for the book and that I can go to the index to find the Saints easily, then with a push of a button I am taken directly to the page I need. It is wonderful and worth much more than I paid for it.

Max is a Warden, a sacred being burdened with the task of ensuring nature continues to thrive. Wardens are revered and to be afforded the respect of their stations at all times for they are passive beings, in constant danger from dark forces. Every warden has their own paladins, ancient knights born to protect, obey and serve. They are bound by honour, justice, courage, and above all, loyalty to their liege. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? The only problem is, Max has no idea what a warden is let alone a paladin. She’s been alone her whole life, causing natural disasters and bar fights everywhere she goes. Strange creatures stalk her every step, and she’s fairly certain she’s a chocolate junkie. Meeting a bunch of smokin’ hot knights seems too good to be true but she’s just desperate enough to believe them. After all, what harm could there be in a few days of rest and relaxation in a beautiful house by the beach, surrounded by a harem of muscle-bound warriors? But there’s one thing she didn’t count on … Ryker. The unofficial leader of the group of outcast paladins, Ryker is a perpetually premenstrual, growly, broody, insensitive jerk with no brain-to-mouth filter. He also happens to be the sexiest, hottest, most sensual man Max has ever had the pleasure of ogling. Six foot four of solid muscle, deep chocolate brown eyes, shaggy black hair and a rugged scar down one side of his face, he was Max’s every fantasy come to life. But the ancient knight is scarred with a tragic past and believes his soul is stained with dishonour. Coupled with Max’s own stubbornness and trust issues, she figures the chance of getting a happy ending is pretty slim. But fate can be a fickle wench, as Max and Ryker soon discover in Warden, Elemental Paladins: Book One.

The banter is great and I really liked the heroine. I laughed several times and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Now, the bad....This book really needs a content editor. Like really REALLY needs an editor. The grammar and spelling was fine. At least, I didn't notice many issues there... But the content...The heroine would say "I'm leaving" then something would happen like she would pass out, or have a single conversation with someone (she said she was leaving a lot) and then she would stay. None of the other people she lived with ever asked her about it. It reminded me of a small child getting mad and saying I'm going to run away from home! Just so the parent pays them some attention. And this other time, she asked all the Paladins to bind themselves to her and they all refused. Cause they're the knight rejects, although you never find out why with most of them. Then a few days later she sticks up for one of them and all of a sudden every single one of them want to bind with her. And just as the last one says that, the hero of the piece picks her up and carries her into the house to go have sex with her. Just leaves all the other knights standing there right after they took an oath...??? Rude much??Also, is it utterly forbidden for a knight to sleep with a warden? Or just sorta forbidden? Or totally fine in certain circumstances? I'm still not sure, and I read the book thru twice. Her hair color changes once, the Knights ages and timelines fluctuate.... This is why I think the book needs an editor. It's a great story. And I like the authors style, but the inconsistencies really irritated and confused me.Also, the cliff hanger ending? Was the weirdest one ever. It's like the book just stopped in the middle of a paragraph. it wasn't in the middle of a battle or a big decision. The book just stopped.I don't know, I really liked the book and it has tons of potential, I just think it needs some polishing.

Everything about this book was top notch, from the writing to the characters and the world that they live in. However ... Why Couldn't Anyone Warn Me That This Is A CLIFFHANGER! I actually jumped up and yelled no when I went to flip to the next page on my tablet and there wasn't one. I really don't respond well to cliffhangers because I can't "finish" the story. The only time I ever buy one is if the series set is completed already so I can jump straight into the next book. I had to wait more than 24 hours to leave a review. And ... as you can see, I'm still touchy about it. A little warning would have been nice. I could have followed the author until the next book came out and then bought them both or I could have bought this one now and left it in my library to read after it came out. I still had to give the book and the author the respect they deserve and not drop any stars because I wouldn't want someone to see a low star rating and walk away from this tremendously engaging story.

I was laughing out loud and crying during this book. Only two other authors have had me laughing out loud at work, Alanea Alder and Tymber Dalton.I love Max, she is such a strong heroine but so vulnerable. I love that no matter the cost she will fight for what is true and right in this world (not to mention her peeps) but at the same time is so soft deep down. I cried so hard when she asked to stay and was turned down by each of the Paladins.

From the minute Grace Evangeline throws her sweet tea in Devin Bressard’s face, their battle of wits and cross-purposes overtakes their lives. Sassy “angelic” Grace Evangeline will stop at nothing to see her romance novel produced for Broadway. Devin Bressard knows all about the commercial success of Ms. Evangeline’s “novels”—as far from his literary, nerve-striking plays as anything could be. Grace intends to pull his head out of the rarefied air long enough to make her point, even if it involves stalking him and infiltrating his friends and colleagues. Devin knows she’s trouble, but who would guess the spokesperson for strength and virtue would be a calamity vortex? He mounts a fierce resistance, but when he’s forced to work with Grace, his profession and sanity aren’t the only things at risk. Collapsing walls on both sides bring a detente that could shatter their bond—or resound through more lives than their own.

By Susan Snodgrass I seriously do not think I have the words to describe how much I loved this book! Kristen Heitzmann has long been a favorite author of mine, reading some of her books twice. When I saw this one was coming, I was very happy to be able to read a wonderful book by her. And I was not disappointed.Told You So is set in New York City. Devin is a play producer and Grace is a novelist. She writes books, romance books where the woman waits for marriage. She pitches one of her books to Devin, hoping he'll produce it as a play. He shrugs it off, offending her, and she throws a glass of tea in his face. Not a great start, is it?I won't include any spoilers here and ruin it for those who haven't read the book. But this book is pure gold. Seriously. The reader is drawn in immediately and can't bear to leave the book for long. Devin and Grace are thrown together once again for an unrelated project and must be civil to each other for the sake of another.Kristen Heitzmann has the unique ability to craft characters that seem to take up residence in a reader's heart. These characters are real, not just a character on a page. We feel their pain, disappointment, joy and heartbreak. This is not a fluffy Christian novel. It is at times gritty, painful and dangerous. But it's real. As God is real. Things don't always happen the way we want them to, But God is never far from us, even during the bad times. His grace and mercy and love never fail.I highly recommend this novel. I am so glad Kristen wrote this. AND...there is another coming in the series.*I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and are honest.

She wants her newest novel produced for the stage, and she wants Devin Bressard, also a playwright, to be the producer. In fact, she won't consider anyone else. When he pans her work to her face, she douses his (face, not work) with her glass of sweet tea, but she doesn't give up. She's going to prove him wrong not only about her novels, but also about the nature of art itself. Drama in real life does happen, and dramatic art fortifies the soul to face its own trials, and Grace is going to prove this to Devin if she has to stalk him to do it. Fortunately for characters and reader alike, Grace is a naive and inept stalker, and Devin quickly finds her out. When they are compelled to work together on a new project, their polarized points of view result in a battle of wits and wills and ignite a passion between them they never expected or wanted, but that just might begin healing they both need.I entered this book with excitement because I've been a fan of Heitzmann for almost ten years and have read most of her novels. But I also knew this is classed as a romcom, and I avoid comedies (and this author is the only exception I can think of to my avoidance of romances). I expected to enjoy it but hoped the humor would work for me. Well, by the end of the first chapter, I felt the magic. I was grinning as I flipped pages, often laughing out loud, devouring the brilliant banter between Grace and Devin. The book is probably 70% dialogue, but it never feels like "too much talking." These are voices you can hear in your head and characters you want to have coffee with (even Devin, even if he calls my writing less than art). I was settled into the comic groove of the book and perfectly happy with it despite my usual genre preferences. However, there were hints: all is not as light as it seems. Devin's cynicism and Grace's resolution against it are more than comic vehicles. Life has happened to these two people--life has hurt them, and they have each adopted a defense that suits them. And yes. Around the halfway mark, the passion between them creates consequences neither of them are prepared for. They don't know what to do, and since they're broken people, they do the wrong things. They grab their shields and huddle behind them, stumble away from each other at least as messed up as they were when they met. Here's the beautiful thing, though: the story's only half done. By the end, what began as a battle of wits and wills becomes ... well, it's a romance, so I'm sure you can guess. But while certain pieces of the story are dictated by the genre, the journey that brings us there is overall a fresh one. I could have done with fewer tied bows at the end, and at worst, one could accuse the book of a tonal shift at the halfway point that some readers might not be on board with. But if you go in looking for clues to the human undercurrents in the hilarity, you will find them, and you'll anticipate discovering the pasts that made Devin and Grace who they are. This book takes a look at defense mechanisms and how they affect our perception of the world around us--people, events, and yes, art. Devin and Grace's quarrels about art's purpose in life are some of the shiniest gems of the book. The dialogue sparks and sparkles and delves deep. The characters make me worry and cheer. I'm looking forward to meeting Grace and Devin again in the sequel TOLD YOU TWICE, as well as getting inside the head of secondary character Bo Corrigan. TOLD YOU SO proves Kristen Heitzmann can write anything and do it right.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A wise, funny, and satisfying romance By Brandy I made the choice between four and five stars when I woke up the next morning and Told You So was still on my mind.Kristen Heitzmann's first independent release teems with the sparkling writing and plot twists her fans know to expect. And new readers, come prepared. This story, funny and dramatic and poignant as it is, comes with a dark edge or three. In spite of larger-than-life characters and high-wire situations that most of us will never face, the depths this novel plumbs are very real. Just as heroine Grace Evangeline's sweet & sassy romances carry messages of hope that Devin Bressard's brooding plays never could, Told You So finds the jagged edge necessary to speak to a certain kind of brokenness. Going much deeper than a simple "opposites attract" love story, it invites consideration that true and resonate art may sometimes require more than a single approach, and that in the synergy of such art, and of love, God's handiwork is evident. For the sake of conservative readers, it bears mentioning that this story reaches beyond certain norms of Christian fiction. As for me, I loved it. Told You So got some good deep belly laughs out of me, squeezed a few tears, and never skimped on the heart-clenchy and/or -melty romantic moments. The characters and the big thoughts they embodied got to me in the best way, and the story held me fast with all its riveting twists. Also, no spoilers, but... I have a theory about one of the secondary characters. I'll be looking forward to Told You Twice to find out if I'm right...I received a free copy of this novel for review purposes; my opinions are my own!
