Have you read the entire Bible? Do you skip over parts you think are dull and insignificant? Would you be surprised to learn these passages could be important to you today?

In The Royal Seed: Why the Genealogy of Jesus Is Important to You Today, author Judd F. Allen shares his fascinating and diligent study and commentary on the royal genealogy of biblical figures and its significance for believers today. Often ignored and passed over by Bible readers as boring, long-winded, and even extraneous passages in the Bible, Allen offers a provocative thesis that these extensive genealogies have much to teach modern-day believers about the importance and centrality of a kind of royalty in the Bible and among followers of the Lord. Each chapter focuses on a central figure that leads to Christ and eventually to Christians today. Judd reveals many hidden and subtle relationships today’s Bible students may not be aware of. Some of the things you’ll learn are who Jesus says is the greatest of all men, what biblical book was authored by King Hezekiah’s great-great-grandson, and who became high priest Aaron’s famous great-nephew forty-five generations in the future.

As heirs in the royal dynasty of the Christ, readers should understand how all parts of the Bible—even those passed-over bits—are of direct significance to how we can develop a better relationship with the Lord. The Royal Seed: Why the Genealogy of Jesus Is Important to You Today shows you the way.

He refers to selected readings in the Old Testament and the New Testament to introduce many historically important figures in Jewish history. He also introduces a number of names not commonly associated with Jesus and his progenitors and proposes provocative hints about reasons for underlying motives.

You want to read this book a little at a time to absorb all that it contains. It gets you thinking about the Old Testament times and often in a new way. Very thought provoking while still written in an easy to read format. I am enjoying learning more about each of the OT characters in the lineage of Jesus. I recommend it.

PDF Ebook Humanizing the Sacred: Sisters in Islam and the Struggle for Gender Justice in Malaysia (Decolonizing Feminisms), by Azza Basarudin

In recent years, global attention has focused on how women in communities of Muslims are revitalizing Islam by linking interpretation of religious ideas to the protection of rights and freedoms. Humanizing the Sacred demonstrates how Sunni women activists in Malaysia are fracturing institutionalized Islamic authority by generating new understandings of rights and redefining the moral obligations of their community. Based on ethnographic research of Sisters in Islam (SIS), a nongovernmental organization of professional women promoting justice and equality, Basarudin examines SIS members' involvement in the production and transmission of Islamic knowledge to reformulate legal codes and reconceptualize gender discourses. By weaving together women's lived realities, feminist interpretations of Islamic texts, and Malaysian cultural politics, this book illuminates how a localized struggle of claiming rights takes shape within a transnational landscape. It provides a vital understanding of how women "live" Islam through the integration of piety and reason and the implications of women's political activism for the transformation of Islamic tradition itself.

Humanizing the Sacred: Sisters in Islam and the Struggle for Gender Justice in Malaysia (Decolonizing Feminisms), by Azza Basarudin

Review "A very well written and engaging account of the Sisters in Islam, an exceedingly important Muslim feminist organization based in Malaysia that has had a significant impact, through its writing and activism, in Southeast Asia and far beyond."―Michael Peletz, author of Islamic Modern: Religious Courts and Cultural Politics in Malaysia

"Sisters in Islam is a pioneer in the field of contemporary Muslim women's activism. Azza Basarudin's thoughtful interviews and meticulously detailed histories about the lives of its members reveal the diverse ways Muslim women arrive at the point of activism. Humanizing the Sacred is an extremely important and timely book."―Elora Shehabuddin, author of Reshaping the Holy: Democracy, Development, and Muslim Women in Bangladesh

"Humanizing the Sacred offers an innovative, nuanced cartography of the intellectual activism of Malay Muslim women reclaiming Islam and refashioning ethical selves in a remarkable act of balancing religious specificities and universal rights. The labor of reinterpreting classic Islamic doctrine, coupled with policy and activist work on issues of gender justice anchored in these very reinterpretations characterizes the truly unique and groundbreaking work of Sisters in Islam. An elegant, theoretically sophisticated ethnography that is a must-read for scholars in interdisciplinary feminist studies, religious studies, and anthropology."―Chandra Talpade Mohanty, author of Feminism Without Borders: Decolonizing Theory, Practicing Solidarity

"Humanizing the Sacred offers a compelling account of Sisters in Islam, a groundbreaking collective of Muslim women activists and scholars struggling against religious authoritarianism. Neither naively celebratory nor harshly critical, Azza Basarudin offers a thorough and impassioned account of the group's struggle toward the development of a feminist interpretive community grounded in Islam, with influence in local, national, and transnational spheres."―Kecia Ali, author of Sexual Ethics and Islam: Feminist Reflections on Qur'an, Hadith, and Jurisprudence

About the Author Azza Basarudin is a research scholar at the Center for the Study of Women at the University of California Los Angeles.

The sudden revelation of a powerful religious calling was an entirely unexpected event in the life of a college student named Lauren. But when it became clear to her that she had a spiritual vocation, she made the exceptional decision to dedicate her life to God. Drawing upon many visits to the cloistered religious community of Dominican nuns in Summit, New Jersey, photographer Toni Greaves has created a luminous body of work that follows the transformative journey by which Lauren became Sister Maria Teresa of the Sacred Heart. Presented in an exquisite photobook volume featuring a luxe cloth case, these meditative photographs capture the radical joy of a life dedicated unequivocally to love.

By CNemaz My copy of 'Radical Love' arrived and I dropped everything to spend a delicious, indulgent hour reading every word and perusing every photo. Toni Greaves has presented an intimate look at something 99% of the population will never encounter. I am not Catholic, and I've heard the usual banter about nuns in Catholic schools as well as read Karen Armstrong's arduous, short-lived journey down that path. Poring through this book, however, I cannot help but sense an undercurrent of change as modern, 21st Century women heed a call which has proven timeless. Greaves' images (and her words) left me filled with admiration for her subject, for her, and with an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude for the devotion of these women on behalf of the world. As a documentary photographer myself, I am inspired. As a human being, I am in awe.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I love these images By Carli Davidson I love these images, I found myself in a moment wanting the sweetness of being surrounded by sisters that comes with being a nun... and I'm as much of a heathen as you can possibly imagine. Really humanizing and haunting. I look forward to contemplating these photos more. Training Fred is a personal favorite.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An astounding, powerful book By Barbara Ludwig Coleman I'm not a writer so I won't be able to fully give justice to what this book means to me and what emotions it evokes, but being a graphic designer and working with photographers enables me to give you some sense of the power of what I've experienced in reading and viewing it (time and time again I might add; it's that powerful). I've had the distinct pleasure of working with Ms. Greaves on a project for Cleveland Clinic, one of the top five hospitals in the country, and that experience alone wowed me. Toni is beyond a photographer/photo journalist: She was able to capture the acute illness of most of our patients while at the same time being discreet in shooting their sickness and their pain. She also endeared herself to many of the patients I would venture to say due to her truly caring nature. This book, Radical Love, some of whose photos I had the pleasure of seeing before, but most I have not, reminds me of the grace, caring, and fearlessness which Toni brings to her work. It's not just the tonality, the cropping, the in-camera capture of each photo, but the breadth and depth of humanity in pictorially telling the story of Sister Lauren. It brings me to tears and yet I can be laughing several pages further into it. It is a book I do and will treasure for many a year, and I plan on sharing it with my colleagues who also had the pleasure of meeting Toni and being amazed by her work. They will be astounded, as will you.

So much so, that I didn't stop to leave a review in between this and Eruption. Yeah, I hardly wrote any notes either. I was just so sucked into the the story. I had to see where things went. There were a few twists that had me spinning. I got my hopes up at one point but they quickly got shot down. I still wasn't that sold on James. The secrets, the crap, and what I felt were mind games. Ugh, and Penny. Grrrr...she's so frustrating.Start this series with Temptation.

I can not wait for the next book to come out hopefully soon. Just learned that there are going to be two more books in this series, I hope that we do not have to wait long for them and that there is a happy ending. If you love a good romance this is a book for you. This was a quick and easy read. Just be prepared because there are still more books to come so you will have to wait a little while to see how everything works out. But this series is so worth it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great series! By Amazon Customer I really enjoyed this book. It is definitely not your typical student/teacher cliche like so many other books tend to be. I like the development of the characters as the series continues. It is a little 50 shades-ish as you read you notice small similarities but the writing is better developed and the characters are deeper. It's very small similarities that most might not even notice. Also it's super hot and the characters seem to have a real connection. Can't wait for the next book!

Arthur Rackham was a Victorian born illustrator and artist who influenced much of the book and commercial illustration of the first half of the 20th Century. The impish detail of his hundreds of drawings brought humour and dark detail to the fairy stories and classic tales which were popular at the time, from Washington Irving to the Brothers Grimm, Peter Pan to his exquisite work on the Alice in Wonderland. His water-colour work, and the graceful power of his ink and line work influenced the Golden Age illustrators of the 1920s, through to the pulps of Weird Tales, and the comic books of today. Arthur Rackham: Masterpieces of Art is a celebration of this industrious and lively artist.

By Muriel Elaine Wood Very nice little series of compact art books--I already own a couple of their other titles. Very heavy on the illustrations, which are high-quality, crisp and quite colorful. Not overladen with text, but what there is is informative. These volumes make a pretty good introductory tool to the various artists covered and are certainly worth the price.

The first retrospective of the pioneering work of Harry Gruyaert

Born in Antwerp in 1941 and a member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Harry Gruyaert revolutionized creative and experimental uses of color in the 1970s and 1980s. Influenced by cinema and American photographers, his work defined new territory for color photography: an emotive, non-narrative, and boldly graphic way of perceiving the world. In 1972, while living in London, Gruyaert created the striking series TV Shots by turning the dial on a television set at random and photographing the distorted images he saw there. A later series, Made in Belgium, portrays his ambivalent relationship with his homeland in a palette of saturated tones. In his most recent work, he embraces the possibilities of digital photography, taking further creative risks to capture light in new ways. Gruyaert’s images are autonomous, often independent of any context or thematic logic. This volume, the first retrospective of his work, is a superb overview of his personal quest for freedom of expression and the liberation of the senses. 80 color illustrations

Review “While the colors might pull you in, what is happening within the frame of Gruyaert’s photographs stand alone primarily because his intent is to create a narrative within a single image.” (Slate―Behold Photo Blog)“Graphic, charged, documentary-style color photographs. . . . Spans Mr. Gruyaert’s evolution as an artist.” (Lens: The New York Times Photography Blog)“Demonstrates that color can indeed be employed to compose exceptional photographs… Ideal for anyone curious about contemporary photography, photojournalism, and, of course, color photography.” (Library Journal)“Seamless and transporting… Gruyaert is in many ways kin to Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, but he works in bold saturated color… In a world filled with street photographers, these days working mostly in color, Gruyaert's is a singular vision.” (The New York Times Book Review)

About the Author François Hébel is the curator of the Harry Gruyaert show at the Maison Européene de la photographie in April 2015. He has been producer, curator, and author of numerous exhibitions and books.

It reminds me that not all street photography is about getting in someone's face with a camera and flash and freaking them out while you snap their photo. Color, line, geometry and just one great image after another.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. There's a consistent grace in the palette Gruyaert applies here ... By E. Klatt There's a consistent grace in the palette Gruyaert applies here. It's somber, kind of melancholic - a deep, thick color saturation with a Kodachrome red hangover but one that seems to support his perspective about the human condition. There's a sense that he knows our absurd situation well enough but also sees a beauty in our trying to keep so many balls in the air at once.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Rather mediocre work overall By A photographer Although having been compared to some of my favorite artists like Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, William Eggleston and others due to his use of color, I simply cannot get into Harry Gruyaert's photography. Not that some of it is not impressive, it's just that he seems to change color palettes and techniques too much to produce consistency. Some of the photos here are simply dreadful. His 1972 TV images apparently were praised at the time as being unique yet taking pictures of distorted television images was commonplace among photographers I knew personally during this period. I also did it and, like others, just considered it an exercise rather than serious work. We all tossed out our slides like painters throwing away failed practice drawings. Other images presented here are weak and, in some cases, the colors are so off they make the subjects look ill. There is no doubt Gruyaert has made a successful career from his work so it's hard to criticize his vision. Still, it leaves me unenthusiastic.

In the book Bell Witch Stories You Never Heard- From the Family That Lived Next Door, Dr. Jim Brooks has taken a story known in bits and pieces by many in our community and has bound those pieces together in an enthralling narrative of the most extraordinary series of events to happen in Robertson County two centuries ago. Dr. Brooks, being a native of Adams, Tennessee, approaches the Bell Witch stories not as a scholar but as a man familiar with this phenomena for his entire lifetime. His pains- taking research began more than half a century ago through boyhood curiosity of the supernatural events that made Adams famous the world over. By its conclusion, we feel as though we know John Bell, John Johnston, Leslie Covington and all the figures that Brooks so profoundly brings to life. It is a nineteenth century series of stories with a very twenty-first century way of hooking you into the story line. This is a must read for anyone interested in our region and those who love a story that can never be fully explained. Brooks has brought these characters long lost to contemporary society and made us feel that we might run into them at the local store or sit with them in the next pew at church. This book is essential to putting this unique Robertson County lore into its proper historical place. May it always be among us.

Bill Schenck is “one of the best-known practitioners of the western pop-art movement―which appeared in the 1960s hard on the heels of American pop’s leading lights like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein," according to Southwest Art magazine. "The Chronology of Billy Famous" is the wild and zany companion book to "Schenck in the 21st Century," a comprehensive catalog raisonne and biography by noted art historian Amy Abrams. This illustrated chronology, written by Bill Schenck, includes 38 of his new drawings and an epilogue. “The Chronology" is Schenck's first unauthorized autobiography and successfully mystifies the basic facts of how he got to be where he is today.

The Chronology of Billy Famous: An Authentic StoryFrom Schenck, Billy

Review What has remained constant throughout Schenck s career is his individuality in dealing with the subject matter of the west. Using the artistic formula of classic western film direction and the photographically reliant systems of contemporary art, he has bridged two genres that resonate with the American experience. From early depictions of cinematic cowboys to real-life cowboys and cowgirls to poetic reveries about the Native American existence in the Southwest, Schenck melds the real with the imagined, autobiography with fantasy. Julie Sasse, Chief Curator and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Tucson Museum of Art."

About the Author Billy Schenck has been known internationally for 44 years as one of the originators of the contemporary "Pop" western movement. Schenck has had over 100 solo shows and is included in 44 museum collections. He is an American painter who incorporates techniques from Photo-Realism with a Pop Art sensibility to both exalt and poke fun at images of the West. Career highlights for the artist include the 2013 Utah Museum of Fine Art’s Bierstadt to Warhol: American Indians in the West exhibit, the Denver Art Museum’s “Western Horizons” and a retrospective of serigraphs created by Schenck from 1971 through 1996 at the Tucson Museum of Art.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Story of the Destruction of the Shenandoah Valley By Mark The destruction of the Shenandoah was among the most tragic events of the war. It was rich in beef and grain, and from its exit at Harper's Ferry a Confederate force could attempt to capture Washington from the rear. This happened time and again. When Grant began his great drive on Richmond to end the war in 1864, he needed to assure that a rebel force did not slip around him through the valley to again threaten Washington. Sheridan was ultimately assigned the task of assuring an army could find no sustenance there. "If a crow tried to fly across the valley it would starve to death, " he boasted to Grant. This book is part of a series of 12 short volumes on the land war published in 1882-3. It took congress twenty years to finally allocate funds to all the documents and communications sorted through. Americans could at last have an inside look at who actually said or did what, and when. While that massive project was still underway, the publisher of this series persuaded highly qualified people - most of them participants -- to produce a quick readable history in light of the new information.M.F. Force ("From Fort Henry to Corinth"), says, "The main source of information is the official reports of battles and operations. These reports, both National and Confederate, will appear in the series of volumes Military Reports now in preparation [by] the War Records office in the War Department."Alexander Webb ("The Peninsula") adds "To be of any practical use, all history, and particularly military history, must be gradually sifted and reduced to small compass."Jacob D. Cox ("The March to the Sea - Franklin & Nashville") sums up purpose and limitations: "The class of readers which has been most in mind [includes] includes the surviving officers and men who served in the war. [My] aim has been to supplement their personal knowledge by the facts ... of recent research. To give unity and symmetry to the ... campaigns here told, by examining each in the light of the plans and purposes of the leaders on both sides. The limits assigned... made it necessary to choose between the narration of incidents which would enliven the story, and that fullness to strictly military detail which seemed necessary to make the several campaigns clearly intelligible, and to enable the reader to judge, with some degree of satisfaction, the character of the operations. ...the effort to do so will give to each a broader understanding of what the great game of war really is."This is what these short works accomplish in spades. With good maps at hand, the text is easily followed, often with amazement at the sorts of things that can and do routinely occur on campaign and in battle. We see armies so pestered by the random and unforeseen that one wonders how anything is accomplished. But the above assumes good maps - and here the books fall short.Cox: "The maps ... are reduced copies of the official surveys made by the engineers of the army. ... In reducing them it has not been possible to preserve all the details of the original... The reader is presumed to make reference to an ordinary hand-atlas... To have illustrated the text by larger and more elaborate maps would have thwarted the purpose of the publishers to put the series within the reach of all."You do need more detailed maps that supplied in most popular military atlases. There are several solutions. If the maps in a particular volume are printed clearly, they can be enlarged on a Xerox machine. Alternately, simply google under Images for, say, "Wilderness, 1864" and you'll likely find an amazing variety of choices to print out.Back in the 1880s, the full sized official government maps were available in a large folder. These were photo reduced to a still legible size, and presented in color, in an 1891 oversized book titled "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War."B&N reprinted this book in 2004, photo-reduced 10% (to 13 ½ x 16 ½"). You can get a used copy on Amazon for $20.00. The only odd thing is that all maps are placed completely randomly, apparently whatever will fit where. You have to consult the appropriate index, which will list all plates (facing pages) containing a relevant map.* * *To give a sense of the value of these books, (1) I've posted some of my personal maps from these books. When a caption isn't attributed, it's mine, warts and all.(2) You find remarkable eyewitness observations such as this in Palfrey's "The Antietem and Fredericksburg." The Union having been defeated at 2nd Manassas must move to block Lee's attempt to cross into Maryland or Pennsylvania. The fastest way for these haggard troops to do so is to march back through Washington and then west."Washington and its environs presented singular sights in the early days of September, 1862. The luxury and refinements of peace contrasted sharply with the privations and squalor of war. There are few prettier suburban drives than those in the neighborhood of Washington, and no weather is more delightful than that of late evening there, when a cooler air comes with shortening days. As the shadows lengthened in the golden afternoon, well-appointed carriages rolled along those charming drives, and by their side the ragged, dusty, sunburnt regiments from Pennsylvania trudged along. Rest, cleanliness, ice, food, drink, every indulgence of civilized life were within reach, but our hands could not be stretched to grasp them. ... The carriages returned to their stables, the fair ladies returned to the enjoyment of every pleasure that Washington could confer, but the Army of the Potomac moved steadily northward to bivouac under the stars or the clouds, and to march again in its tatters through the dust and the sunshine, through the rain and the mud."(3) The actual communications among commanders is fascinating.(4) Basically working through these books with maps is a quick read, but also has the fascination of working through a book of logic problems. The essential information available to commanders is in your hands also. What to do is not always clear, but I came to admire the ability of most generals to "let a situation develop," then "read" it, and take actions. The complete set:(1) The Outbreak of Rebellion - John G. Nicolay(2) From Fort Henry to Corinth - M.F. Force(3) The Peninsula - Francis Winthrope Palfrey(4) The Army under Pope - John Goodman Ropes(5) The Antietam & Fredericksburg(6) Chancellorsville & Gettysburg - Abner Doubleday(7) The Army of the Cumberland - Henry M. Cist(8) The Mississippi - Francis Vinton Greene(9) Atlanta - Jacob D. Cox(10) March to the Sea & Franklin/Nashville - Jacob D. Cox(11) The Shenandoah Valley in 1864 - George E. Pond(12) Virginia Campaign of '64 & '65 - Andrew A HumphreysThere is also a volume of statistical records (V. 13), and three on the naval war:The Blockade and the Cruisers - James Russell SoleyThe Atlantic Coast - Daniel AmmenThe Gulf and Inland Waters - A.T. Mahan (yes, the Mahan)I suggest reading the land volumes as follows:I. The Outbreak of Rebellion. From here you can follow either East or West Theatre first:IIA - Eastern Theatre(3) The Peninsula - after the failure of Bull Run, and attempt is made to capture Richmond by a naval landing.(4) The Army under Pope; while Union troops are evacuating from the failed peninsula effort, Lee turns on Pope and inflicts another defeat at 2nd Bull Run. Lee then attempts to cross the Potomac and invade the north.(5) The Antietam & Fredericksburg; McClellen having returned from the peninsula stops Lee's invasion at Antietam but fails to destroy his army. Burnside takes over and pursues Lee to Fredericksburg, where the Union army self-destructs in an assault on its fortified heights.(6) Chancellorsville & Gettysburg - Hooker replaces Burnside and tries to take the Union army around Fredericksburg, but is bluffed from the dense forests around Chancellorsville. Lee again breaks free and this time invades Pennsylvania but is stopped at Gettysburg.(11) The Shenandoah Valley in 1864; this valley is a thorn in the Union's flank, and is ultimately razed so Union forces can operate more freely in the east.(12) Virginia Campaign of '64 & '65; Lincoln is desperate to end the war. Grant promises to do so at a price. It will be bloody, but he wants all losses immediately replaced to his army remains at full strength during the long bloody grind to Richmond.IIB- Western Theatre(2) From Fort Henry to Corinth; The Confederacy hoped to fortify the upper Mississippi in Missouri and Kentucky as a jumping off point to invade the north. Grant wrests the initiative, and with the fall of Forts Henry and Donelson. After Grant's decisive victory at Shiloh, the Union never loses the initiative in the west.(8) The Mississippi; the struggle for Vicksburg, which puts the entire Mississippi in Union hands.(7) The Army of the Cumberland; the struggle for Chattanooga; Union defeat at Chickamauga, besieged at Chattanooga, final breakout of the siege.(9) Atlanta; Union drive down the critical rail line through hard country from Chattanooga to Atlanta.(10) March to the Sea & Franklin/Nashville; after Atlanta, Sherman's famed march to the sea, after which he very nearly links up with Grant driving down on Petersburg.CAUTION:This series is public domain. Many publishers offer cheap digital scans with illegible maps and text that is difficult to read -- apparently this reviews stepped on one such land mine. The best editions by far are those from DSI digital scans, with flawless text and clear maps. Most of the have the "Look Inside" feature so you can see for yourself. For some unfortunate reason, DSI's editions usually don't appear when you search these titles. Try searching a title with DSI after the name, but even that doesn't always work. Here is the DSI edition:The Da Capo edition is also good. It's editions are a little smaller in size but of high quality and with excellent contemporary introductions.Final comment - I'm no expert or professional Civil War buff, so don't treat anything I've written as such. This is merely a reader who has derived great personal pleasure from this series. I've tried to convey a sense of what was so enjoyable to me.

Yankee historians delight in calling Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest "the Butcher of Fort Pillow," claiming that he instigated a "racist massacre" of surrendering black Union troops during the battle at Henning, Tennessee, on April 12, 1864. But is this true? Of course not. It is merely the North's fabricated version, one based not on reality, but on opinion, nescience, emotion, sciolism, presentism, spite, and an anti-South bias that is still very much alive to this day. For those who are interested in the truth about the conflict, award-winning historian and Forrest scholar Lochlainn Seabrook has written "Nathan Bedford Forrest and the Battle of Fort Pillow: Yankee Myth, Confederate Fact." This brief but comprehensive investigation blows the lid off what pro-North writers like to refer to as a "controversy," but which was in fact nothing more than an ordinary fight in which an overwhelming force (2,500 racially integrated Confederates) assaulted an indefensible fort filled with belligerent drunken soldiers (600 racially segregated Yankees) who refused to surrender in the face of impossible odds. Excerpted from Mr. Seabrook's popular title "A Rebel Born: A Defense of Nathan Bedford Forrest," the book contains dozens of pages of new material, along with rare photos and illustrations, maps, details concerning the origins of the battle and the charges against Forrest, official reports, and important eyewitness accounts by those at the scene. Also included: an index, bibliography, and reference notes. This book, which helps restore Forrest's reputation after being unfairly tarnished by 150 years of slander, falsehoods, and anti-South propaganda, is a must-read for all those who are in search of the truth about "Nathan Bedford Forrest and the Battle of Fort Pillow." For the traditional South Mr. Seabrook's work represents the final word on the matter. Civil War scholar Lochlainn Seabrook, a descendant of the families of Alexander H. Stephens and John S. Mosby, is the most prolific and popular pro-South writer in the world today. Known as the "new Shelby Foote," he is a recipient of the prestigious Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal and the author of over 45 books. A seventh-generation Kentuckian of Appalachian heritage and the sixth great-grandson of the Earl of Oxford, Mr. Seabrook has a forty-year background in American and Southern history, and is the author of the runaway bestseller "Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner!" Seabrook's other titles include: "Confederate Flag Facts: What Every American Should Know About Dixie's Southern Cross"; "Everything You Were Taught About American Slavery is Wrong, Ask a Southerner!"; "The Great Yankee Coverup: What the North Doesn't Want You to Know About Lincoln's War"; "Give This Book to a Yankee: A Southern Guide to the Civil War for Northerners"; "Confederacy 101: Amazing Facts You Never Knew About America's Oldest Political Tradition"; "Slavery 101: Amazing Facts You Never Knew About America's 'Peculiar Institution'"; "Forrest! 99 Reasons to Love Nathan Bedford Forrest"; "Honest Jeff and Dishonest Abe: A Southern Children's Guide to the Civil War"; "The Unquotable Abraham Lincoln: The President's Quote They Don't Want You to Know!"; "The Quotable Stonewall Jackson"; "The Alexander H. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend it. By Amazon Customer It is said that to the victor goes the spoils. In the case of the Civil War the spoils have been the writing of its history. Lochlainn Seabrook dispels the purposeful and politically driven false narrative of the Battle of Fort Pillow through scholarly and factual laden documentation. The documentation is so well done that the reader almost has a sense of being there. This book is simply the irrefutable truth about what happened at Fort Pillow before, during and after April 12, 1864. I highly recommend it.

On May 17, 1957, Lee Friedlander was given full access to photograph the participants of the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington, DC. This extraordinary event brought together many of the great thinkers and leaders of the civil rights movement and solidified Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s position as its preeminent leader. The 58 previously unpublished photographs reproduced as duotones in this important and beautifully produced commemorative record are among Friedlander s earliest work. With his full access to the presenters stage, Friedlander was able to portray the famous individuals at the event - Mahalia Jackson, A. Philip Randolph, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee among many others - as well as the audience of some 25,000 men, women and children who gathered to give voice and energy to the ideas embattled by the movement. Timed with the three-year anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Prayer Pilgrimage placed pressure on the Eisenhower administration to uphold desegregation in the South and made voting rights a focal point of the struggle for equality. Also included in this publication is a facsimile typescript from The King Center of MLK s Give Us the Ballot speech and additional ephemera from the march, including the printed program and the Call to Prayer distributed to participants. The complete (and only existing) set of the 58 prints, acquired by Yale University Art Gallery will be on exhibition at YUAG and other venues in 2017 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Prayer Pilgrimage.

Colen This little book is an absolute must for anyone interested in either Friedlander, a leading 20th century street and art photographer, or in understanding the growth and development of avisual artist. Shot by Friedlander in 1957, when he was only 23 and had barely begun his photographic career, these black and white images of an historic Washington civil rights rally bare only the slightest resemblance to the photographer's later work. That said, these powerful, evocative images of unknown foot soldiers and ultimately beatified leaders of the civil rights struggle, demonstrate that even at an early stage in his artistic development Friedlander had the eye for detail, and compositional ability, that would make him one of the greats. In addition to being of great interest to those who care about photography, this book is a must have for anyone with an interest in the American civil rights movement.

Abilez Tejano music icon, Johnny Hernandez, has written his autobiography titled, THE COTTON PICKER/ AN ODYSSEY which is a must have for all Tejano music fans and historians to own and have. Johnny Hernandez takes you along his personal journey from a little boy growing up in a racist time in Texas, to the early days of Tejano music where he and his brother cleared the path for all artists to follow. His music career follows major events in our country's history, of which he played a part with his talent and music. Johnny Hernandez writes his book in such a way, that as you read, you feel like you are right there along with him through his life of success, hardship, highs and lows, drug addiction and even events during his life where evil and black magic tried to take control of his life as he lived the American dream. He answers the question about the reason for the breakup of Little Joe, Johnny y La Familia and why he chose to never perform again with his brother. Please order your copy today and read for yourself why Johnny Hernandez's autobiography is the best ever written by any artist in our Tejano music industry. He is an inspiration with his. message of "Don't Quit" and "Don't sell yourself short by not trying something new in your life," and "Believe In Yourself Always." Thank you Johnny for sharing your life story with all of us with your book.

By Stace I just got done reading the autobiography of Chicano music legend (and friend) Johnny Hernandez. Titled The Cottonpicker–An Odyssey, Hernandez takes us through various phases of his life: The kid who worked the cotton fields and went through a racist school system that left him in need of a formal education; the young teen dropout (I prefer pushout) who struggled job to job with a young family; the vocalist of an up-and-coming Chicano music band that made it big nationally and internationally; the successes of his songwriting and La Familia with him at the mic; the trials and tribulations that brought an end to the “Little Joe, Johnny y La Familia” era of the band; and his struggles as a solo act and a person. All of this, along with familiar stories of family love, personal struggles with drugs, alcohol, women, and business, and much more make for a book that was hard to put down. Add some personal successes in overcoming these struggles, and finding success in the radio business, and one can’t help but to feel good that Johnny is still around and thriving. What was the toughest read was Johnny’s depictions of his struggles with his brother. Frankly, I would think this is the part that people wanted to read most because for the longest time, people were too willing to blame Johnny for the “Little Joe/Johnny” break up. Like most band stories, there is much more to the story, and perhaps some bitter pills that we as fans must swallow. It is definitely an entry into musician life that we never experience.Of course, disturbing to me were the challenges Johnny faced as he attempted a solo career after La Familia. Being met with unhelpful promoters, producing and marketing his own albums, and trying to keep a band together aren’t necessarily new stories in music. They are part the overall story of what became of the Tejano market, where (in my opinion) big corporations exploited Tejano music, picked favorites, and left the industry in disarray once the cash wasn’t as lucrative. For Johnny, adding the 800 lb. gorilla that he was no longer a part of the premier TexMex band (La Familia), and one can only imagine Johnny’s struggles. As a fan of Johnny’s for a long time, I followed his solo career. I also noticed his long absence after his “big break” when Capitol EMI signed him, and his next return with various self-produced albums. This book fills in a lot of those gaps that many fans will appreciate.I’ll also say that Johnny putting his story in print isn’t only good for the fans, but it’s good for Chicano history. Seldom has the story of our culture and music been put in print, especially by the people that make the music. I hope this is the first of many more projects put out by some of our graying, yet continuing, Tejano titans. Great job, Johnny!

Hernandez Johnny Hernandez is a Mexican American "Chicano music legend" He and his brother Little Joe, changed the way traditional regional Mexican music was viewed. The Chicano soul filled horn accentuated music, filled the southwest, changed the socio political climate in the late 60tys as their song, "Las Nubes" was the soundtrack for the Farm Worker Movement. This book is about Johnny Hernandez's journey from the fields of Texas to the major rock venues around the country. Johnny tells about the highs and lows of being a true artist and the spiritual journey one has to take to find their true meaning in life. I am a Professor and a Doctor of Mass Media and I could not put the book down. The story is an American Classic and still resonates in my soul. Buy the book and learn some secrets............
