With a vibrant, intelligent and enterprising population, Haiti is a unique country with a rich history. Indeed, it was called the Pearl of the Antilles and it is the first independent republic of coloured people in modern times. However, Haiti has experienced significant decline since its early days. It is presently the poorest country in the Americas and has an economy that depends mainly on foreign aid. Is Haiti condemned to perpetual poverty? Ernst Etienne demonstrates that mathematical principles can be used to develop a formula for the sustainable development of Haiti. The diligent application of this formula has the potential to make Haiti the most prosperous country on Earth!

By Tamara Ernst Etienne’s analytical mind and deep love of his native country is apparent in this call to action book. He begins the book by making a critical point when it comes to innovation and forward movement: What we say is impossible is really only impossible based on the knowledge we currently have. ‘Impossible’ begs to be challenged.Haiti has long been considered a poor country with its people living in desperate, poverty-stricken conditions with no hope of change. However, Haiti does not need to remain a poor country. As Etienne clearly points out, for a country to move from poor to rich, the money made from its exports needs to exceed the money spent on imports and caring for its people. In order for others to believe in you, you must first believe in yourself. Etienne believes in the Haitians as people of intelligence, abilities, and resources. Haiti is a country of incredible winds, waves, mountains, and sun for solar and hydroelectric power. If Haitians are willing to elect officials who will build an infrastructure based on these resources and the work ethic of its people, Haiti can develop rapidly.Throughout the book, Etienne interweaves gorgeous photos of what parts of Haiti could look like if the Haitians make economic changes. He presents several solutions to the economic challenges facing Haiti and a broad picture of implementation. This book serves as a good reminder of the ability for countries to rise and fall economically.

A simplified look into Haiti and its economic potential By clbee Haiti: The Sleeping Economic Power by Ernst Etienne is about taking a simple mathematic formula – exporting more than you import – and applying it to the situation in Haiti. Etienne methodically works through each major industry in the country, including electricity production, waste management, building, and transportation, and offers simple, almost common sense advise on how Haitian politicians can apply his formula to put the country in the positive. By the end of the book, he’s thoroughly convinced you that becoming an economic power is as simple as following his plan and leaves the reader with a sense of hope.I really enjoyed Etienne’s conversational, simplified language and explanation. I’m no mathematician, and I know shamefully little about Haiti, but I never got lost or felt excluded when he laid out complicated mathematical formulas or talked about his country. His informal, example-laden style made the subject matter not only accessible but also enjoyable. The one negative thing I can say about the book is that its structure is a bit loose and could use a little editing. Sometimes, Etienne has too many examples and jumps from too many subjects – aerodynamics to history to politics to thermodynamics – and it takes you a minute to remember what he was saying. Likewise, some of the chapters ended rather bluntly, especially the final one. I would have preferred a conclusion that really tied the whole thing together.Nevertheless, this was a fascinating book that laid out a fairly revolutionary concept. I think it’d be interesting to philanthropists of any nationality and students of economics.

He's also seen Haiti from the outside, as he's spent much of his life in the United States. In Haiti: The sleeping Economic Power, Etienne illustrates a mathematical formula that, if properly implemented, could transform Haiti from a poor nation into a thriving, self-sufficient one. Essentially the formula turns out to exporting more and importing less, with an emphasis on producing more from within Haiti while not relying on financial investments from foreign countries.Though it seems obvious after reading the book, I hadn't previously considered some of the problems faced by a developing nation that depends on money from wealthy countries. Problems like pressure to return on the investment, to agree on how to allocate the money, and how to utilize the funds in a way that in congruent with the giver's interests. Etienne expresses gratitude for the financial support that Haiti has received, but proposes that his country needs leaders who take a stand against continued dependence on foreign powers. The author also outlines some plans as to how Haiti can take steps towards self-sufficiency, like building production equipment with native resources rather than importing it, reinforcing its buildings to survive earthquake and rapid wind threats, and to build an affordable, sustainable energy plan.Ernst Etienne believes in his people and it shows. Hopefully his efforts contribute greatly to a future in which Haiti enjoys wealth, prosperity, and abundance.
