3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ahead of His Time By Ivan Sayer Albert Schweitzer was a member of 'Medecins Sans Frontieres' sixty years before that organisation existed. In 1913 he built the first room of a hospital in a disused chicken-coop in Lambarene. In spite of it being closed when he became a prisoner of war, in spite of the failure of his investments after World War I, and many other problems, that hospital is still going. Schweitzer was a christian who asked himself 'What did Jesus do ?'. His answer to that question was this: He walked with the poor and healed their diseases. Schweitzer decided he was going to do the same, in spite of the fact that he could have had resounding success in any number of occupations in comfortable places. We need this story of spiritual success to hold up the mirror to our follies.

Let’s face it. Most kids don’t want to practice the piano. And if they do find the time to practice, it’s usually because their parent kept nagging them. How frustrating! Piano teachers are frustrated too. It’s nearly impossible to teach students new concepts when they don’t understand the old ones--all because of a lack of practice. If you’re a parent in this situation, I have just the solution you’re looking for. In this upbeat book, I share all the tips I’ve discovered in my 14 years of teaching piano. You’ll learn fun, practical ways to get your kids to the keyboard. But this book goes one step further. I’ll show you easy ways to encourage better quality practice. Even if you’ve never had a music lesson in your life! I wrote this book for kids of all ages. There are creative ideas for elementary students and also a section for teens. There’s even a section for what to do if your child wants to stop taking piano lessons. That’s right, there is hope and my book will show you exactly how to get your child interested in piano again. Don’t be the kind of parent who sits on the sidelines waiting until their child wants to practice. Piano lessons are too expensive for you to let another “no-practice” day go by. This book is your answer to get your child to the keyboard, have good quality practice and develop a life-long love of music.

101 Piano Practice Tips: How to get your Kids to the Keyboard!, by Tracy Capps Selle

About the Author Tracy Capps Selle has nearly 15 years of teaching experience and she's sharing all her secrets with you. You really can get your kids to enjoy practicing the piano! Piano has been a life-long love for Tracy. It all started when she became pianist of her church when she was only 13 years old. She held that job through high school and then headed off to Virginia Tech. Following graduation, her love of science won out and she become a TV meteorologist. (She thinks of it as a little side-track that allowed her to meet her husband--also a TV meteorologist!) Through it all, Tracy never lost her love of music. After becoming a wife and mom, she got back to those roots. She's been teaching piano for more than 10 years and loves every minute! Her passion is encouraging kids to find their love of music and she loves giving parents pointers on how to make that happen. Her focus is not only getting kids excited to practice the piano, but also helping students have better quality practice. In her spare time, Tracy loves to read, crochet, and hike with her family. She's also an advocate for Type 1 Diabetes. Her son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in March 2010. You can visit her website at tracyselle.com

These tips are well organized and helpful for parents, students, and teachers alike. There are also a number of great pointers about free or nearly free online resources that are useful for pianos students. I especially enjoyed the section about teens and the strategies laid out for how to keep them in lessons. I would recommend this book for new and seasoned piano parents - bravo!

I know I’m a bit new to the world of eBooks, but I love how I’m able to access this on my computer, iPad, or smart phone (Galaxy S3 if you’re wondering.) All you have to do is download the free Kindle Reading App on your device and you’re ready to go. Teachers - this is a great book to recommend to parents. When a new student starts lessons, this should be a standard link that you send to their parents. They can read it on their phone or tablet while they wait during lesson time!2) The Tips are Organized into Easy-to-Use Sections. Looking for an instant practice idea? Check out the “Top Ten Things You Can Do Right Now.” Trying to motivate a student who is down on their abilities? Check out “Attitude is Everything.” There are even sections that highlight how a student can continue to practice outside of the practice room – including links to lots of great music apps.3) Tracy is Super Creative. The tips in this e-book will help you think outside of the practice box. Are you tired of fighting against students who say they don’t want to practice? Tracy has some fantastic ideas to help avoid arguments. She helps make practicing fun and interesting by suggesting unique ways to get your student excited to get to the piano bench. I particularly love her idea of the “practice hat”!4) You Can’t Beat the Price. This e-book is available for only $2.99. There are 102 tips (yes, there’s a bonus one at the end!), which means you are paying $0.03 per tip. Add in the great 10% discount codes that Tracy includes for a couple of resources, and this is a fantastic bargain.

Merrell This book has plenty of solid ideas for how to stimulate the music practice of any-aged music student. It's a valuable resource for a teacher, parent, or other person with influence over a student's schedule and practice habits. If you have a student who is bored with music or not practicing, this book provides a multitude of ideas for how to add interest back into practice sessions or playing music in general. I am happy to have access to this book so I can refer back to it for ideas for a long time to come! Out of the many links provided, I did find one link that was outdated.(I was provided with a free copy for review purposes, but the opinions offered above are completely my own.)

The stories are concise,(about three pages long) explaining the stories of the old testament, in chronological order. Very easy to read for devotions and easily understandable to children, while giving them all the important elements of the stories.

Okay little may not be the right word as it is 96 pages long of intergalactic doodles. It measures 8.5x10 inches in size. The cover is think and sturdy. I can see this holding up to a long time of use. This would be a cute book for amateur artist or someone wanting to unwind with playful doodles.I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the best in the series By Keri Oleniach I have a few of the 20 Ways to Draw a ... series and this is my least favorite. Many of the doodles are very similar not just on the same topic page but from section to section. Then there are the topics that don't make sense or fit the theme of the book.I would have given it one star, but there are some cute doodles and some items that are clever, but I wouldn't recommend this book to you unless you are completing your set of the series. The other titles I have from this set are great and I am sure there will be future books in the series I will enjoy.

This book chronicles the development of the institutional model in Massachusetts with the well-intended beginnings, the decline and subsequent heroic reform. Massachusetts led the country and perhaps the world in the development of facilities intended to house the mentally ill and developmentally disabled during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The state schools constructed during the early 20th century in the United States were the direct result of the unfortunate science of eugenics, as society strived to create a race that was without flaw. After WWII, the eugenics fervor became moot and the myriads of people who were placed in state schools remained--as society forgot about them. Sufficient funding was denied, and both employees and residents suffered the dire consequences of a society that no longer cared--a society that wanted to forget. This is the history of a place, but more than that, it is a story about people. It is the story of great men who did wonderful things and of well-intentioned men who made egregious mistakes. It is the story of a heroic fight for reform. A study of the human condition, of atrocity juxtaposed against nobility--a constant struggle. Unlike many other books on this topic, here there is a happy ending. Nobility triumphs. The tireless human spirit perseveres, and society is forced to listen to the cries of its institutionalized.

From One Century to the Next: A History of Wrentham State School and the Institutional Model in MassachusettsFrom Nova Science Pub Inc

Review "Ingrid Grenon brings such personal warmth and conviction to this book that it is much more than just an informative history of Wrentham State School. Throughout the book her underlying affirming message shines through so clearly that the book, which tells such an important story and tells it so effectively, will serve as a valuable resource and guide to society in this century, lest we forget that we are all members of one family." -Reviewed by Harold L. May, M.D., MPH, Former Medical Director at Wrentham State School, President, FAMILY, Inc. Ingrid has done an unbelievable job of capturing the rise and fall, and rise again, of a facility that is over 100 years old.  I can speak and relate firsthand about 33 years of the Wrentham story.  There were many heroes throughout those 100 years.  Ingrid's writing style, her tremendous searching of the archives, her first hand, hands-on description of her day-to-day work with the residents as a direct care employee put the reader on the scene...Review provided by Nicholas D'Aluisio, Former Superintendent, Wrentham State School/Wrentham Developmental Center

Quinn, and a former employee, I can honestly say that Wrentham State School has been a big part of my life.As always, I find Ingrid's story telling compelling. Her lighthearted style keeps the reader eager for more. I found myself transported back in time with this book. The accuracy of her descriptions, as well as her accounts of events, were informative and true to those with which I had grown up. Ingrid's research was thorough, and her passion comes through in this engaging account of Wrentham State School. This book is certain to engage and entertain all.

Great Read... portraits of enlightened and courageous leadership through the dark days of the institutional model By SuCav "From One Century to the Next..." is so much more than a historical textbook. It is a study of the human condition and the triumph of what is right and just over well intentioned misguided philosophies that led to disastrous results. High school students and the general public read Elie Wiesel’s Night to understand the true horrors of the holocaust through a well written book with characters to which one can relate. I think Ms. Grenon’s book can also teach students and the general public about the horrors of what can occur when any vulnerable population is segregated from and then forgotten by society. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms. Grenon's warm and personal tone makes it easy for the reader to relate to the people in the book.Ms. Grenon covers the topic of eugenics, a philosophy popular in the U.S. in the early 20th century. It is a real eye-opener. We must never forget the painful lessons learned from the dark days of eugenics.I think the book should be published as a paperback and marketed to a much broader segment of society, not just academia. This book would make a great companion to a textbook for a course in history, psychology, sociology, ethics, or medicine. But, it is also an enjoyable stand-alone book for avid readers of non-fiction with a message.

It is a book that everyone needs to read.

The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 has long been forgotten by most people. At the time, however, many foreign observers believed they were witnessing the long anticipated titanic struggle between fascism and communism with democracy caught in the crossfire. Spaniards, of course, can never forget the war as the wounds inflicted by it have never completely healed. This book focuses on one of the most dramatic and tragic events of that conflict: the leveling of the sacred Basque town of Guernica on the late afternoon of 26 April 1937. Since then, historians have wrestled with the question of why the town was destroyed and by whom. Was it obliterated by a carpet bombing inflicted by the German Condor Legion as the Basques insist or torched by the Basques themselves who allegedly sought to throw the blame upon their Spanish Nationalist opponents? Although the destruction of Guernica occurred 78 years ago the incident still resonates throughout the Basque country. For Basques, Guernica is the wound in the heart that still separates them from their fellow countrymen who control Spain’s fortunes from Madrid. But for those who know little or nothing about the event, it is Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece they think of when Guernica is mentioned. His austere, black and grey painting has become the celebrated indictment of modern warfare, especially the bombing of civilian centers. As such, a copy of the painting guards the entrance to the United Nation’s Security Council chamber. Guernica was the first European town thoroughly leveled by incendiary and high explosive bombs which pointed the way to the frightful bombings of Warsaw, Rotterdam, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki during World War II. Guernica reminds us of the devastating potential of modern air power, which like Damocles’ sword still hangs ominously over a troubled and anxious world.

Setting her sights on Nirvana, Wyoming’s fastest-growing retreat for the high-society, she won’t stop until she’s proven the R&R is nothing more than a romanticized meat market for the lonely of heart. Chase Sever believes he’s finally taken care of the journalist who has been breathing down his neck and can start concentrating on the expansion of his pride and joy—Nirvana Ranch. He doesn’t have time for romance, but when a sassy siren arrives at his ranch, he suddenly has a cleared schedule. She’s smart, bubbly, and has a body that could make a cowboy melt in his boots, but he suspects there’s more to her than meets the eye. Is she really who she says she is? She has Chase right where she wants him, but what she finds might change her beliefs on Nirvana, compassion and love…or she might have roped in more trouble than she can handle.

Ropin' Trouble is Chase's story, he is the owner. Kaycee is a reporter writing as K.D. Hart. Her story about Nirvana is pulled due to an unreliable informant. Because of this, she is fired. She applies for a job at Nirvana as a wedding planner, going undercover to prove that her story is truthful but she finds way more than what she expected. When Chase and Kaycee meet, sparks fly, breathing deepens, lady parts get wet and male parts swell. You will read about the ups and downs of their growing relationship with lots of hot, smoking sex. But... liars eventually are found out!! So what happens, you ask?? Read the book!! I loved this addition to the series and can't wait to read more. Cowboy Paradise is book 1 and Ropin' Trouble is book 2.

This book has secrets and lies and yet again Nirvana’s magic is ever-present. Kaycee is a journalist that has her sights set on destroying Nirvana’s reputation because she doesn’t believe in the inexplicable healing powers of the ranch. She wrote one damaging article but loses her job before the second is published. Chase owns Nirvana and is expanding his operations. He has never met Kaycee but there is no love lost for her pen name K.D. Hart. Needing a job and restoration of her journalistic prowess, Kaycee learns of Chase’s plans for including weddings at the ranch, and applies to be the wedding planner. The attraction between Kaycee and Chase is immediate. Will Kaycee be able to keep her past a secret? Will Chase still want her once he learns the truth? This is an incredible read. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend the series.

And Kaycee the reporter determined to get her revenge for being fired over her scandalous story about the ranch. It seems Kaycee had a hard time believing she wasn't right when it came to the ranch she had written so harshly about. But Nirvana turned out to be a magical place after all. Chase was a hard working, determined man. He didn't have time for women much less love. Lucky for him neither did Kaycee, but fate has a way of doing the things that we can't do. But will secrets and lies take away the chance that they can find happiness in each other. It must be the magic of Nirvana.

Have we been missing the most important lessons from the Pilgrims all along? What if what happened to the Pilgrims before they ever set sail on the Mayflower is happening in America today?

A direct descendant of the Mayflower, Nate Grasz uses the story of the Pilgrims to illustrate how the hostile actions of the U.S. government and modern culture seek to undermine religious liberty, and why that is dangerous for all.

"Religious liberty has never not been under assault, either by one creed seeking to exterminate all others, or by forces of secular absolutism, or in this age, by both. Every age needs new voices and new champions of the "first freedom," and Nate Grasz is one of those. In his eloquently and closely argued appeal for a renewal of commitment to religious liberty, Grasz lays down a marker for another generation of religious freedom defenders to follow." -Hugh Hewitt, law professor, host of a nationally syndicated radio talk show

"An eye-opening, at times shocking, look at how far we have strayed from the religious freedom that set America on the path to greatness. It is a blow to the Left's monopoly of politically-correct intimidation of Christians. A timely and timeless read." -Nick Adams, Founder and Director of Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness (FLAG), media commentator, and best-selling author

"Nate Grasz is an eloquent and fearless new voice from the millennial generation, summoning us back to the fundamental freedom of them all, religious liberty. If you believe as I do that America must remain a nation under God if she is to remain a nation at all, you must read this wakeup call for faithful patriots to act before it’s too late." -John Andrews, Founder of the Centennial Institute, former Colorado Senate President

"The Pilgrims came to America to be free. They were determined to live in a place where their freedom of religion would not be at risk or be subject to the whims or preferences of government authorities. These admirable people have inspired generation after generation of those “yearning to breathe free.” But now, as Nate Grasz eloquently points out, the government is constantly hectoring Americans to surrender their religious liberty rights. This book is a call to action by an outstanding young author who writes knowledgeably and with passion about the country he loves and the religious freedom he cherishes." -Bill Armstrong, President of Colorado Christian University, former U.S. Senator

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read For Yourself By Valicity Garris This is a collection of short stories and essays based on the life of the writer, a combination of fiction and reality that is interesting at some points and puzzling at others. I am probably the WORST person Tavon could have approached for a review. I have mixed feelings for this piece. It’s a good concept and it is written quite well but I feel like it’s full of nothing but negativity, generalization, and complaints. I am not the type of person to put up with whiners. We’ve all got a sob story but if you have time to tell yours then you’re not working hard enough. You should chase your dreams so hard there’s no time to think about the past. The world is so ugly and Tavon gives us a close up of that from his point of view. Part of me wants to feel sympathetic toward the “poor black man, from a poor black family, raised in a poor black neighborhood,”—his words not mine—but I can’t. Actually, I refuse. Because when you want something bad enough, you make it happen. No matter your color or condition of living. And it seems that’s what Tavon has decided to do, but I can’t find his effort beyond the mound of complaints and tales of woe.Just take a moment and imagine if Martin Luther King Jr. had the same negative attitude expressed in Tavon’s writing...There’s a lot of crude stereotyping here. About the attitudes toward the homeless, about women and their mindset toward ‘nice guys’, the government, a twisted view of Chick-Fil-A and its relation to homosexuals, the governmental oppression of blacks, and even Ebola. There is no happiness in this piece, which may be due to a lack of joy in the author’s perspective on things, but there isn’t even any hope. I’ve never met anyone who is actively working on their dreams but complains the entire time. One of my favorite lines of the book… “I am a young man with a dream most women can’t fathom to believe. Writing is my ONLY ticket out. And women only see writing as a hobby.”I’d like to take this moment to admit that I am, indeed, a 22-year-old, naturally born woman who has self-published multiple books. I’d also like to recognize JK Rowling, EL James, and Danielle Steel—all women, all billionaires, and all WRITERS. Ms. Steel is currently the bestselling author ALIVE and the fourth bestselling author of all time. So please, PLEASE, tell me how women ‘can’t fathom’ your precious, incomprehensible dream, sir…?So, after ranting and raving and chucking my copy of this book across the room, why did I give three stars to a piece I didn’t enjoy? Because I can see why others would like this. People like to be angry, they love hearing about the black struggle, how easy is it to jump on the bandwagon behind white cops abusing black victims? As a person of color myself, it’s all too easy. But I’m not so simple minded. I don’t like whiners or grumblers, I like to see people overcome and you just don’t get that here. Maybe others will love reading about how life just utterly sucks, according to Tavon. Maybe others will love discussing the unfair approach from the US government to Ebola.“How’s the Ebola virus so suddenly curable once it hits two Americans but as long as it was in Africa it was fine if they died from it?”—I guess that’s his insinuation that America didn’t care when Africans were dying, which only adds to the growing flame between blacks and whites in the US. Because, of course, only the White Americans didn’t care, right? And every disease in Africa is America’s responsibility to cure, right?I mean, we could just rejoice in the fact that Ebola is curable at all. But no, instead Tavon focuses on the negatives, nitpicking to a T—as he does throughout his entire book. From A Cold Dark Place is thought provoking but in the wrong way for me. It’s definitely a conversation starter and could even serve as a fine addition to critical thinking course materials. But it is not at all entertaining. If you’ve ever heard of Black Lives Matter, then you don’t need to read this book. If you’ve ever seen Fox News then you don’t need to read this book. If you’ve ever met a black guy working minimum wage complaining about how he can’t get a girlfriend—probably because he complains too much—then you basically have the gist of this book.So there…I’ve written my first negative review and I’m not ashamed because this book pushed me that far. But regardless of how I feel, I would actually recommend this book to others. I WANT other people to read it because I think this could start a fire across the nation. It’s just that annoyingly controversial, like Tavon wants to tick you off or rev you up. I obviously fell for the former. So I may not have liked it but I don’t think ‘making me like it’ was the author’s intention. In all honesty, I think Tavon would be happy to find someone who disagreed with him because, at the very least, it means I took in what he said and paid attention to his craft.Writing is not Tavon’s forte, it is his ability to conjure a reaction from his readers—whether good or bad—and I think that’s something worth a few stars.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

From a Cold, Dark Place, it Certainly is By Graham Downs Note: I use the Goodreads rating system, so my two stars means "It was okay".I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but I was probably the wrong person for the author to ask. It's not really my thing. It's just a collection of random memories from the author's life (although I'm not sure how true they are), along with a couple of rather short pieces of fiction, and a poem at the end. From a cold, dark place, it certainly is, I'll give it that. Lots of depression, sex, and drugs. Some of the stories held my attention; others I couldn't understand. There's quite a bit of black American slang, and quite a few cultural references that I didn't get, because I'm not American, and I don't really have any experience with the lifestyle the author's talking about.I will say the narrator is very misogynistic, because descriptions of women as "bitches" and "bits" abound, along with the feeling that women only exist to provide pleasure to men. I can understand if the characters in the story feel that way, but then those references should be kept to dialogue. Since the author describes this book as true stories from his life, one can only assume that he personally feels that way about women, too... or perhaps felt that way about them at one time, but we don't know how many years ago these stories look place, and there isn't any personal development evident in the narrator.Race definitely plays a big part in this author's mind, too, because basically every character gets introduced, either explicitly by their race ("The Asian guy", "The black man", "The old white dude") or skin colour ("Skin darker than burnt chocolate"). There doesn't seem to be any reason why we should know most of these characters' races, and I can't abide that. To me, a person's race should at best be implied by a name or cultural reference, and only then, if it's absolutely essential to the story. Otherwise, it's irrelevant. The writing wasn't spectacular either, with incorrectly used words, and multiple consecutive sentences starting with "She" or "He" - very little variety in word choice. The fiction was a little better, but not great. I love flash fiction, but every story, no matter how short, should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and some form of conflict - many of these stories just felt like samples of larger works.Lastly, the formatting of my e-book edition left a lot to be desired. Sometimes it was double-spaced, sometimes it was single spaced, and there was no linked table of contents - which if you read many of my reviews, you'll know is a pretty big issue for me.

Short stories and essays covering the author's life By Whispering Stories **I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review**"From a Cold Dark Place", is full of short stories and essays about the author’s life. For anyone thinking about reading it I do feel the need to let you know that it is full of swear words and sexual language. In ‘I Envy the Homeless, and what They Represent’ – Michael talks of envying the homeless, and believes they are far more honest with themselves than those with a roof over their heads.I appreciate the author’s views on this matter, however I don’t believe everyone who is homeless is there by choice, some people have no choice but to lay their heads down at the end of the day on the street. In ‘Because I Look Like Donald Glover’ – Michael is going on a car journey with friends to a Caribbean carnival. They stopped the night at a friend’s place. A young woman that he used to fancy. He goes on to describe the party scene at her place in great detail, including the sexual encounter he had with his ‘friend’.In ‘Loathing in Loneliness’ – Michael talks of his fear of dying alone, of being jealous of couples and wanting a girlfriend of his own who understands him. I get a real sense of his loneliness through his words and felt his heightened emotions on the subject. I also felt sorry for him, and hope that his fears won’t come true. There are plenty more stories throughout including ‘A Beautiful World’, ‘Land of the Lost(Fiction)Act 1: Frankie “The Rolling Stone”‘, ‘When I Lost My Virginity’ (This was described in great detail), ‘The Lust for Love(Unfinished Fiction)’ and many more. All showcasing a poignant time in Michael’s life. The one story/essay which I enjoyed the most was ‘Four Letter Word'(Poem) – This is a poem about loving a woman. You can feel the love oozing from the words and I would say it’s his best work and the one that hit me the most.Throughout the book I got a clear picture of the author’s voice in every story. You could feel how raw his emotions were on each subject. If you like autobiographical books and can take the swear words, and at times extreme sexual language, then this is a book that you should read. This though, wasn’t a book I felt I could personally fully connect with and enjoy.Reviewed by Marcia at Whispering Stories Book Blog

Discursive and non-discursive interventions in the political arena are heavily mediated by various acts of translation that enable protest movements to connect across the globe. Focusing on the Egyptian experience since 2011, this volume brings together a unique group of activists who are able to reflect on the complexities, challenges and limitations of one or more forms of translation and its impact on their ability to interact with a variety of domestic and global audiences.

Drawing on a wide range of genres and modalities, from documentary film and subtitling to oral narratives, webcomics and street art, the 18 essays reveal the dynamics and complexities of translation in protest movements across the world. Each unique contribution demonstrates some aspect of the interdependence of these movements and their inevitable reliance on translation to create networks of solidarity. The volume is framed by a substantial introduction by Mona Baker and includes an interview with Egyptian activist and film-maker, Philip Rizk.

With contributions by scholars and artists, professionals and activists directly involved in the Egyptian revolution and other movements, Translating Dissent will be of interest to students of translation, intercultural studies and sociology, as well as the reader interested in the study of social and political movements. Review

‘This is a volume of uncommon urgency, intellectual range, and political importance. Translation, which occupies the crossing point of discourse and power and which affects all networks of word, image and sound, must now stand near the centre of any study of global activism. The richly diverse set of contributors, the activists and scholars, the creators and analysts, located in and out of Egypt, uncover both the conceptual depth and the social force in the contemporary tasks of the dissenting translator.’ Michael H. Levenson, University of Virginia, USA

‘If you think you know what translation means, think again. This fascinating book uncovers translation as a political act that is negotiated within the spaces that lie between cultures and languages, between the local and the global, between the translatable and the untranslatable. With rich contributions from activist translators, journalists, writers, film makers, scholars, graphic and graffiti artists, all involved in ‘translating’ the Egyptian revolution, Mona Baker has produced a provocative and enlightening volume that will change the way you think about protest, language, culture, politics and translation. It also provides insight into the chaos and complexity of the Egyptian revolution from the perspective of many of the actors involved, highlighting the role art, culture and language play in shaping our perceptions of contemporary political reality, and our understandings of violence, emotions, power, resistance, solidarity, and revolution.’ Dr. Cristina Flesher Fominaya, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and author of Social Movements and Globalization: How Protests, Occupations and Uprisings are Changing the World (2014)

‘Four years into the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Translating Dissent showcases translation in its broad sense as a new, radical space of intercultural negotiation where discursive and performative representations of revolt in the local and global context take place. By focusing on the recent developments in Egypt and its ongoing contests over freedom of speech and the role of political activism and dissent, the contributors to the volume have brilliantly demonstrated the possibilities offered by translation to create networks of solidarity. The field of translation and cultural studies is that much richer for their efforts.’ Faten I. Morsy, Ain Shams University, Egypt

‘Reading these essays one is struck by the enormous force of creative energy that prevailed during the height of protest in Egypt. The writing underscores the ethical and political role that language, and especially translation, played in broadcasting the multi-media responses to events taking place on the ground. The writers reveal a newly imagined collective consciousness of an alternative global future. These essays ensure that this vision will remain an active force for human rights and international solidarity.’ Moira Inghilleri, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA

‘Rarely has scholarly work on translation been transformed into such an affective experience. The choice to let people write from the streets and from their hearts has resulted in a book that is about much more than translation. This is a book about solidarity, and it is itself an act of solidarity. It tells stories that cannot be found elsewhere, that convey not the meaning of the revolution, but the feeling. Rather than offering us a coherent work on 'translation', the book brings the reader into the uncertain world of the Egyptian revolution, in which every form of translation becomes a political act that inspires, moves, depresses and challenges the reader.’ Marianne Maeckelbergh, Leiden University, the Netherlands, and author of The Will of the Many: How the Alterglobalisation Movement is Changing the Face of Democracy (2009)

‘In no other book did the term translation acquire its full significance in revolutionary networking that characterizes modern times. With the Egyptian Revolution in its focus, this is a valuable companion to all those who were or will be part of any protest movement around the globe. Brilliant.’ Mourid Barghouti, Palestinian poet and author of I Saw Ramallah

‘Translating Dissent offers a compelling case study of language, art, and the mediating powers of translation during the Egyptian Revolution. The range of authors―from Cairo’s own artists, writers and film-makers to non-Egyptian activists and scholars―details translational strategies in a place-based context of revolution and dissent while expanding our understanding of translation itself. Building from Baker’s illuminating introduction to the micro-studies that follow, the volume reveals translation’s ongoing, if insufficiently recognized role in forging local solidarities as well as global networks.’ Sandra Bermann, Cotsen, Princeton University, USA

‘This book offers a radical rethinking of translation and translators. By bringing together scholars of translation studies and social movements with a range of activists, it problematizes the unseen but crucial role of translation in protest and social activism. The reflections of activists on translational practices in documentary films, subtitling, web comics and street art position translation in its broadest sense as central to protest and dissent across the world.’ Hilary Footitt, University of Reading, UK.

‘The rich studies and personal reflections that Mona Baker has collected here put translation at the dynamic centre of political praxis, while opening up the concept of translation itself, rethinking its meaning and scope by training a wide-angle lens on oppositional activism in and for Egypt since 2011. Examining a varied array of media and translational contexts, the contributors give eloquent voice to the intersections of physicality and narrative, language(s) and (other) visual forms, commitment and sheer determination that Egypt’s many oppositional acts of translation have demonstrated.’ Marilyn Booth, Khalid bin Abdallah Al Saud, Oriental Institute and Magdalen College, University of Oxford, UK

‘As new and established forms of activism swiftly move between local and global realities, translation, in its many forms, becomes integral to the life of social and political movements. Translating Dissent makes visible precisely this kind of deep and deeply influential translation, allowing us to hear its multiple voices.’ Loredana Polezzi, Cardiff University, UK
