Gifted writer and reporter Robert Poole opens Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery with preparations for Memorial Day when thousands of families come to visit those buried in the 624-acre cemetery, legions of Rolling Thunder motorcyclists patrol the streets with fluttering POW flags, and service members place miniature flags before each of Arlington's graves. Section 60, where many of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan have been laid to rest alongside service members from earlier wars, is a fourteen-acre plot that looms far larger in the minds and hearts of Americans. It represents a living, breathing community of fellow members of the military, family members, friends, and loved ones of those who have fallen to the new weapons of war: improvised explosive devices, suicide bombs, and enemies who blend in with local populations. Several of the newest recruits for Section 60 have been brought there by suicide or post-traumatic stress disorder, a war injury newly described but dating to ancient times.

Using this section as a window into the latest wars, Poole recounts stories of courage and sacrifice by fallen heroes, and explores the ways in which soldiers' comrades, friends, and families honor and remember those lost to war--carrying on with life in the aftermath of tragedy. Section 60 is a moving tribute to those who have fought and died for our country, and to those who love them.

Powerful 'biography' of just a few acres of Arlington Nat'l Cemetery, and some of the men honored there By Nathan Webster I have not read Robert Poole's "On Hallowed Ground," which is a more historical account of Arlington itself. His "Section 60" is not a history of the cemetery, but a series of linked accounts that explains the circumstances of how a few of these soldiers and veterans ended up here. Obviously, the stories are all tragic - but heroic in their own ways. While many of these men are from Iraq and Afghanistan, others have been recently recovered from Korea and Vietnam, and even far-flung regions from World War II.I have read 50+ books about Iraq/Afghanistan, as well as reported from Iraq as a photojournalist embedded with US troops - so you might think I'd be the perfect audience, but I'm really not. I've read many accounts (David Finkel's "Good Soldiers" and "Thank You For Your Service" are two of the best) that chronicle soldier's stories, and while "Section 60" has a vast scope, they are often similar to what I've seen before. However - that's the point. To a less familiar reader, these stories WILL be new, and WILL be powerful. Poole has done a good job of covering a lot of ground to give readers a 'biography' of Section 60. So while the stories themselves aren't exactly connected, they tell a full story of all the different (tragic) ways a veteran can be interred here. The most powerful section, about David Sharrett, recounts a friendly fire incident and the father's determined efforts to get to the bottom of it. I was familiar with this already, so this wasn't new - but I bet to most readers this would be their first time hearing about such a messy and dishonest way a family was treated. Other accounts chronicle parents and family members dealing with their own straightforward, but still tragic, losses. Not just combat, but PTSD-related suicide are related here.I was reasonably familiar with the efforts made to recover MIAs in Korea, Vietnam and even the Pacific. But I was surprised to read the account of nine men accidentally left behind after a commando mission against Japanese targets, and later executed, buried and forgotten.I was disappointed there were no women veterans included in his stories - that's one of the big absences here, especially given the scope that Poole otherwise tackles. There aren't as many women at Arlington as men, obviously, but the Iraq/Afghanistan wars have been the first time when so many women have been at the 'front line.' Poole makes that point, but I wish he had followed up more. A husband or boyfriend would have offered a different and valuable perspective.Poole offers interviews and accounts of the Old Guard and Marine burial teams, who pride themselves in their precise detail. When it comes to describing these men, Poole is a little too enthusiastic with his adjectives, and every salute is "flawless," etc, and their patriotism is worn like a halo. Having been in the Army, I know that soldiers are not as perfect as all that, and I would have liked a little of their cynicism to be reflected, but that's just me (read "Gardens of Stone").When I was stationed in DC in the early '90s, I visited Arlington quite a few times. It's strange to think I haven't been back since 1998. Poole's accounts make me want to return someday. Again - a reader less immersed in these stories than me will appreciate this powerful and comprehensive history of Section 60, only a few acres of Arlington, but it seems much bigger here.

A profound salute to those on both sides of the grave By AmazonFan In Section 60, Robert Poole delivers a profoundly moving look at what many refer to as "the saddest acre in America," the corner of Arlington National Cemetery where our nation's most recent fallen warriors are being laid to rest.Poole's writing is graceful and dignified as he details the remarkable courage and sacrifice not only of the fallen but of their families, friends and comrades. Through his portraits of these men, he reminds us that there is a face, a life, a story behind each of the 300,000 precisely aligned headstones in Arlington Cemetery.Poole does not sugar coat the circumstances behind the journey of these men to Section 60, some of whom survived the IEDs of Iraq and Afghanistan but succumbed to the demons of PTSD. He also gives insight to how some of America's fallen from wars past - WWII, Korea and Vietnam - are finally being brought home to rest at Arlington. In addition to detailing the valor and selfless service of these heroes, Poole also goes behind the scenes with the specially trained honors teams - one for each branch of the military. These are the young men and women who somberly perform the farewell rituals - the caissons, the flag folded with precision, the rifle salute and the playing of Taps - as they carry one of their own to their final resting place. It's a ritual most only know from television and Poole's interviews with some of these soldiers provides a rare look at the individuals charged with giving the final salute to their fallen comrades.Words fail me in describing just how moved I was in reading this book.It honors not only the heroes who have fought and died for this country but also those who love and remember them.(PS - My heartfelt thanks to Poole for donating a portion of his proceeds from Section 60 to TAPS - the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).

By ck With eloquence and grace, Robert Poole invites us to meet some of the many pulsing hearts that make Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery live on.Family members and friends visit the graves of these veterans, leaving flowers, keepsakes, and mementoes, and drawing comfort in the bittersweet process of revisiting everyday memories as well as the ache of recalling how their loved ones died.Somehow, those left behind -- whether civilians or veterans, whatever the year their loved ones passed -- have built a community. Poole touches on this by showing interrelationships, such as Vietnam veterans "being there" for those mourning more recent losses. With compassion and respect, he also explores the toll of such combat-related issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other challenges that active-duty servicepeople and veterans both confront. Notably, neither he nor his military and civilian sources shies from such painful subjects, including suicide.Reading stories like those shared here can be extremely emotional, but it is necessary.... Necessary for understanding fear and bravery, necessary for understanding what makes a person willing to die for a comrade or a principle, and necessary for working through grief, whether immediate or at a distance."No man is an island," philosopher John Donne wrote four centuries ago, "every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." Those at rest in Section 60 and those who keep their memories alive live this philosophy. Daily. As one whose relatives sleep at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and other veterans' cemeteries, I admire the people who have worked to keep the memories of their loved ones so tangible and visible. I hope their grace and generosity in sharing their stories starts a groundswell of everyday remembrance that spreads nationwide.

This so amall book was writen in 1919 and is about Russian Revolution. And this book remains more correct, about the Russian Revolution, than other books writen decades later. In 1919, the Bolshevism is described in this book as a clear tiranny.Even so, this book claims that by 1919 the communists had killed thousands of persons, while in fact, they had killed millions of persons. This book also forgets that Lenin, Trotsky, etc. returned slavery to the Russian laws.Four stars, because of these small mistakes and for the fact that this book is a primary source about the Russian Revolution. How much a common man could know about Bolshevism in 1919?This small book has the answer for this question.

When Charles Stuart was a young child, it seemed unlikely that he would survive, let alone become ruler of England and Scotland. Once shy and retiring, an awkward stutterer, he grew in stature and confidence under the guidance of the Duke of Buckingham; his marriage to Henrietta of Spain, originally planned to end the conflict between the two nations, became, after rocky beginnings, a true love match. Charles I is best remembered for having started the English Civil War in 1642 which led to his execution for treason, the end of the monarchy, and the establishment of a commonwealth until monarchy was restored in 1660. Hibbert's masterful biography re-creates the world of Charles I, his court, artistic patronage, and family life, while tracing the course of events that led to his execution for treason in 1649.

The book also has quite a number of good illustrations relating to the life of Charles and other notable people in the story and the times in which they lived. This is a good study of what happens when a person who does not have the personal strengths and special qualities needed for high position has high position thrust upon him. Though he was quite a fine gentleman and much more moral in his personal behavior than most other monarchs, he was not really king material. Unfortunately, he never suspected that of himself. Once placed in tumultuous times, Charles became doomed. Hibbert does an excellent job of showing how Charles' personality became his fate, or as the saying goes: "Character is destiny." This book is well worth the attention of anyone intersted in Charles I, the English Civil War, the Reformation, the 17th century, monarchy or the psychology of power.

That way England could have had its King Henry IX and Charles, the Duke of York, could have been a great art director. Instead death took his brother's life and sent Charles to a position in which he was so over his head that he lost it.During the course of this book I wondered how a monarchy so powerful in the days of the Tudors could become so weak and feeble. Part of King Charles' problem was he was the son of King James. King James I had often boasted of his absolute power and wondered why his ancestors allowed an institution such as Parliament to come into existence. If King James had only done a tad bit of research he may have discovered that Edward Longshanks stole the idea from Simon De Montfort. King Edward I thought it would be best to have a meeting where the various interests of the kingdom could discuss any problems the kingdom was facing, raise money, and if anyone had any grievances to be able to air them. This allowed the King to govern more effectively and for most of its history Parliament was just a state of being as opposed to an institution with its own interests. For many effective monarchs, Parliament was just a method used by the King to strengthen his own power. One could imagine that Edward I, Edward III, Edward IV, Henry VII, Henry VIII, or Elizabeth I could have handled the problems the King Charles had to deal with far more effectively than he did. For King Charles I was brought up listening to his father's theories and believed every one of them.Charles was clearly the wrong man for the job. He was so stubborn in his position that he would never negotiate until it was too late, and then, when willing, he wanted the previous terms offered to him. He had almost no sense of his situation. Despite being absolutely sure in his position he was slow to action. Everything he tried from his attempts to arrest Pym and other members of the Commons to his battle strategies he was too slow and unimaginative."Underlying melancholy there was a certain lack of sympathy in the King's responses, a defensive rejection of an intimacy that might reveal him as a less assured man than he tried to be. Few men ever felt that Charles really liked them. Few servants ever felt that their services were truly appreciated: if they did not do their duty they were politely dismissed, if they did do their duty they were doing what was expected of them, they were treated well but rarely with a hint of warmth or affection." (p.136)After his defeat and imprisonment he remained as stubborn as ever, he made several attempts to escape and he tried to hold out hoping things might turn his way again. His moment of glory and greatness came, ironically, at his lowest moments. An American statesman, Senator Al Gore Sr., once observed that in defeat one could often let their glory out. Charles could and did at his trial and execution. He directly challenged the court questioning its legitimacy. His bravery and dignity at his own execution turned him into a martyr. The one drawback of this book is there is no real discussion on the legitimacy of King Charles' trial. When Louis XVI is tried by his people it is done with the monarchy abolished and the former King reduced to just plain citizen Louis Capet. When King Charles is tired he is tired as the King of England. That the King could be tried under existing laws is something absurd when one thinks of it. Yet this is never brought up, the only thing about the legal irregularities brought about was the mention that most of the nation's top attorneys refused to participate. In the end I found this to be a great an informative book. King Charles I was probably the second worst King of England, with only King Edward II being worse. Was Charles a tyrant like Richard II? I do not think so. Yes, he could be brutal, but no more than the Tudors or many other great kings and monarchs of this time period. I do feel what replaced him was, in the end, far worse.

Kerr The author covers the highlights in the life of Charles I, and his writing style kept me interested throughout the book. For those looking for a general biography but don't want to delve too deeply into the English Civil Wars, this book will satisfy. The book has many period illustrations throughout. The background of the English Civil Wars, and the wars themselves, are covered, but only thinly. As a biography, the book does focus mainly on the perspective of Charles I and most events that occur outside of his vantage are not covered, or only mentioned.I was disappointed that the book does not mention any of the events following the king's execution: his head is chopped off, and all we know about the aftermath are some details of his lying-in-state and burial (and that his wife was upset). It ended very suddenly. A brief epilogue would have satisfied.Overall: a nice introduction.(Not related to the book itself, this book was just dropped into a too-large box that was not taped or glued, just clumsily folded together. The book was not damaged while it slid around in its box, but it could have easily fallen out or had its corners/pages bent. Very shoddy packing.)

The Founding Fathers is a concise, accessible overview of the brilliant, flawed, and quarrelsome group of lawyers, politicians, merchants, military men, and clergy known as "the Founding Fathers"--who got as close to the ideal of the Platonic "philosopher-kings" as American or world history has ever seen.R. B. Bernstein reveals Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, and the other founders not as shining demigods but as imperfect human beings--people much like us--who nevertheless achieved political greatness. They emerge here as men who sought to transcend their intellectual world even as they were bound by its limits, men who strove to lead the new nation even as they had to defer to the great body of the people and learn with them the possibilities and limitations of politics. Bernstein deftly traces the dynamic forces that molded these men and their contemporaries as British colonists in North America and as intellectual citizens of the Atlantic civilization's Age of Enlightenment. He analyzes the American Revolution, the framing and adoption of state and federal constitutions, and the key concepts and problems that both shaped and circumscribed the founders' achievements as the United States sought its place in the world. Finally, he charts the shifting reputations of the founders and examines the specific ways that interpreters of the Constitution have used the Founding Fathers.A masterly blend of old and new scholarship, brimming with apt description and insightful analysis, this book offers a digestible account of how the Founding Fathers were formed, what they did, and how generations of Americans have viewed them.ABOUT THE SERIES:The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Outstanding Introduction to the Founding Fathers By Matt Reed An excellent, eminently readable, intelligent, and refreshingly balanced introduction to the founding fathers of the United States.Bernstein's treatment of the Founding Fathers excels for three reasons: the quality of the writing, the scholarship of the author, and the fairness of the treatment.First, the sheer quality of the prose is praiseworthy. Writing about such a vast topic in such few pages requires enormous amounts of discipline, and Bernstein strikes this balance masterfully, all with a genuinely "readable" style. With minimal effort, one could finish this book in a single weekend-- while thoroughly enjoying the process.Second, Bernstein's scholarship is apparent on every page. Combining an intimate knowledge of the primary sources with an impressive understanding of the historical scholarship and literature allows for a concise yet comprehensive picture of the founding fathers. Avoiding a simple narrative or chronology, Bernstein demonstrates a gift for moving fluidly from revealing details and tidbits that challenge our preconceived notions only to then take a step back and through dispassionate analysis, consider the meaning and importance of the topics addressed. What we get is so much more than simply "telling the story" of the founding fathers, or a series of biographies. Rather, this book is an analysis of their time and how their actions and notable inactions (read: slavery) affected-- and were interpreted by-- subsequent generations.Lastly, Bernstein succeeds in his goal to "[take] the founding fathers down from their pedestals without knocking them down." This is important, because it's easy to fall prey to the competitive "Hamilton or Jefferson?" mentality, or the equally dangerous tendency to fall to one's knees in praise of these historic figures. Rather, Bernstein treats the founding fathers as simultaneously praiseworthy, deeply flawed, unavoidably human subjects capable of great feats of achievement and hypocrisy.Towards the end of the book, Bernstein quotes a selection of Warren G. Harding's speech at the dedication to the Lincoln Memorial in 1922. Harding's words should guide us in our study of the founding fathers, as they have obviously guided Bernstein in his: "Abraham Lincoln was no superman... Lincoln was a very natural human being, with the frailties mixed with the virtues of humanity. There are neither supermen or demi-gods in the government of kingdoms, empires, or republics. It will be better for our conception of government and its institutions if we will understand this fact."Bernstein understands this fact, and we, the readers, immeasurably benefit from that understanding.

By Darius Smith In just 183 pages, Professor Bernstein manages to brilliantly and superbly demonstrate his intense focus and expert scholarship on the founding of our nation, and as such, makes being able to understand the Founding Fathers very readable and enjoyable. We often revere them as gods or larger than life people, but as he himself said, the goal was not to "[knock] them down [from] their pedestals", but to "meet [them] eye to eye" and thereby see them as for who they were really were: humans like us who wanted to better themselves, and their society, towards a brighter future by forging and crafting this idea called America. I have read about them somewhat, but was really looking for a concise and more understandable version of the writings I had read. I took a couple of Political Science classes at my local community college, and so wanted to further that understanding from those courses, and this work fits the bill in that regard, even starting out with an explanation of the origins of the term "founding fathers" (which I had not known about in previous study). I like how Prof. Bernstein has managed to collate the history of the Founding, the Founders and their accomplishments and how said accomplishments and views connect to the present day. I especially like how he, at the end, manages to use five very prominent African-Americans' words to signify that the work that the Founders first set foot upon is still going by, in JFK's words, "a new generation of Americans". I will definitely read this again. Therefore, I rate this work 5 out of 5 stars.

Nothing wrong with the author or the seller. It's the publisher, Oxford, who put out this very small book with very tiny print. There's really no reason for that in today's market. Someday I would like to read this work and if a publisher comes out with a readable copy where I need not use a magnifying glass I will read it.When I gave it to our local library, the librarian was taken back and blurted, "My! That is small print!" But there may be someone who will take it out to read and enjoy it. A friend in another State had done that even though he found the print very small (he didn't tell me ahead of time and there's no reason he should have since he could read it although with some eye strain as I learned later).I've grown accustomed to "old" books re-printed in tiny type because they are really facsimiles. There's no reason for that either and I try to stay away from them and return them when one slips by. This book is thoroughly modern. Tiny fonts are a thing of the past and in the past were necessitated by available technology and, perhaps, economics. I don't see those obstacles today.

It is a 'must read' for any serious student of the civil war as it was fought in the west (Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky). While other biographies have been written (such as, "Bedford Forrest and His Critter Company", by Ansrew Nelson Lytle and "First with the Most Forrest" by Robert Selph Henry), they don't have the breadth that Wyeth's book has. Of course, the only biography actually reviewed and approved by General Forrest was Jordan and Pryor's "The Campaigns of Lieut. Gen. Forrest and of Forrest's Cavalry", but this work is flawed by a markedly biased position on the part of the authors and by their inability to access the Official Records. On the other hand, they did interview Forrest and most of his surviving authors and Wyeth drew much of his material from this work. Still, for the definitive story of Forrest's life, Wyeth's book is the acknowledged source.

The author goes in depth regarding the life, challenges, and campaigns that General Forrest faced during his life as the greatest Cavalryman both Confederate and Union. The book is written in a manner that is easy to follow and at times leaves you on the edge of your seat, wanting to finish the page you are on so you can get to the next page. The battles are detailed, maps are great, and the photos put a face to the names throughout the book. If you are a student of the WBTS, and especially the western theater, than this book on the Confederacy's greatest General is a must have for your collection.

Another Wonderful Collection By Dave_42 "Crucial Instances" is the second collection of short fiction from Edith Wharton and was published on March 30th of 1901. This book consists of six works of short fiction, and one dialogue, most of which had been published previously in magazines, but there is also a previously unpublished story, "The Confessional", included as well. The contents included the following:"The Duchess at Prayer" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine" in August of 1900. An old man who works at an estate no longer frequented by the Duke, relates the story of how the Duchess' statue changed. It is a story that he heard from his grandmother, who witnessed the event. The story has a very gothic feel and could easily have been written by Edgar Allen Poe."The Angel at the Grave" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine" in February of 1901. Paulina decides to preserve her grandfather's papers and the facts surrounding his greatness and in that endeavour she devotes her life. Eventually she decides to publish a biography of his life, but when it is at last complete the publisher informs her that his fame has faded and will not publish it. She feels that her life has been wasted, when a young man visits her and is interested in her father's papers for an entirely different reason."The Recovery" - Published originally in "Harper's Magazine" in February of 1901. Kensington is a celebrated American painter in certain circles. But is he really a good artist, or is it hype by those who think they know art. When he gets a chance to have his paintings shown in Europe, there is an opportunity to see the old masters as well as see how others view his art."Copy: A Dialogue" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine in June of 1900. Mrs. Ambrose Dale - a successful writer at the top of her form, and Mr. Paul Ventnor - a successful poet who is now retired, become reacquainted after a long time. They were once lovers, and each has kept the letters they received from the other, and both have done so for a similar reason."The Rembrandt" - Published originally in "Hearst's International-Cosmopolitan" in August of 1900. A wonderful story, in which the narrator is in charge of finding pieces of art for a museum. He is approached by his cousin to look at an unsigned Rembrandt which is owned by Mrs. Fontage, a woman who is near destitute. He realizes immediately that it is not worth anything, but can't break her heart and tells her that it is worth $1,000. When Mr. Jefferson Rose, a young man who is far from rich, talks to him about buying the piece he warns him that it isn't actually worth anything, but Mr. Rose is still willing to go ahead with it because he likes the painting and wants to help Mrs. Fontage. He can't allow Mr. Rose to waste his money either, so he buys the piece for the museum, knowing that the person who would be most likely to question it, Mr. Crozier, is away. When Mr. Crozier returns after six months, there are other pieces which the narrator believes Crozier will focus on, but Crozier is aware of the "Rembrandt" and comes to talk to him about it."The Moving Finger" - Published originally in "Harper's Magazine" in March of 1901. This story reminds one of "The Picture of Dorian Grey", though with a few differences. Here we have a man, Ralph Grancy who remarries after a failed marriage a woman whom he loves very deeply. A friend, Claydon, paints her picture so well that Mr. Grancy is very taken with it. When Mrs. Graney dies, Mr. Grancy first goes away for several years, but when he returns he has Claydon alter the picture to bring his wife closer to what she would look like if she were still alive."The Confessional" - First published in this volume. This is the longest story in the volume, and it is told by an Italian priest, Don Egidio, who has come to America and is telling the story of a great friend of his to the narrator. The story includes the tale of why Don Egidio came to America, as well as why his friend also came. This is a great collection of stories, from those with a bit of a horror feel, to ones which just make the reader feel good. This collection is even better than her first collection, and that is not an easy task. This one earns its five stars.

The Education of a Circus Clown: Mentors, Audiences, Mistakes (Palgrave Studies in Theatre and Performance History), by David Carlyon

Review

"David Carlyon ran away from a lucrative legal career to join the circus. His beautifully immersive personal history captures the gritty excitement and deep camaraderie of his first circus season. The Education of a Circus Clown is a terrific and important book that will enrich and enliven our historical understanding of clowning, the circus, and American culture." - Janet M. Davis, American Studies and History, University of Texas at Austin, USA, author of The Circus Age: American Culture and Society Under the American Big Top, and editor of Tiny Kline, Circus Queen and Tinker Bell: The Life of Tiny Kline

"The literature of clowning, like that of other performing arts, is full of anecdote-laden memoirs that shed little if any light on the actual craft of the performer. The Education of A Circus Clown is a rare exception because David Carlyon is both a professional writer and a professional performer who offers us not just a behind-the-scenes look at life in the clown alley of the world's largest circus, but also an honest and at times anguished analysis of the performer's daily struggle to be funny. Entertaining and illuminating." - John Towsen, author of Clowns and the physical comedy blog All Fall Down

"An important history - as all-encompassing as it is personal - and a great look into the mind of a performing artist. If you want to know what real American circus life is like, then this book is for you. If you don't . . . well, then you're missing something wonderful." - Murray Horwitz, Tony Award-winning playwright (Ain't Misbehavin'), creator of NPR's Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me, and a former Ringling clown

About the Author David Carlyon is author of the critically-acclaimed book, Dan Rice: The Most Famous Man You've Never Heard Of. He is Adjunct Professor at Iona College, USA, has worked as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, Flint, USA, taught at Northwestern University, USA, and was on the Speakers Bureau of the New York Council for the Humanities, USA. He is an ex-Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus clown, produced playwright, director, and Equity actor, studying at London's National Theatre Summer Programme, UK. He graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, served in the US Army, earned his JD from Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley, USA, and received his PhD from Northwestern University, USA.

Learning his craft one mistake at a time By John Towsen Dave is quite the Renaissance man: writer, teacher, historian, actor, lawyer (!) and, last but not least, clown. His narrative of attending Clown College (1976) and touring with the Blue Unit (1977) stands above most circus memoirs not just because he’s a better writer —it’s a good read— but because he actually focuses on the performer’s struggles to stay vibrant and funny from day to day, audience to audience. He doesn’t try to pass himself off as a super clown, just as a reasonably skilled and talented individual learning his craft one mistake at a time.Read my full review on my physical comedy blog: http://physicalcomedy.blogspot.com/2016/01/book-review-dave-carlyons-education-of.html

A dutiful king and reluctant public figure If Ethelred was notoriously "Unready" and Alfred "Great," King George VI should bear the title of "George the Dutiful." Throughout his life, George dedicated himself to the pursuit of what he thought he ought to be doing rather than what he wanted to do. Inarticulate and loathing any sort of public appearances, he accepted that it was his destiny to figure conspicuously in the public eye, gritted his teeth, battled his crippling stammer, and got on with it. He was not born to be king, but he made an admirable one, and was the figurehead of the nation at the time of its greatest trial, World War II. This is a brilliant, touching, and sometimes funny book about this reluctant public figure, and the private man.

Definitive, if less than detailed By Steve Benner Philip Ziegler's biography of the father of Britain's current Queen Elizabeth, "George VI: The Dutiful King", is a slim addition to the 'Penguin Monarchs' series, offering just six chapters over fewer than 80 pages of a hardbound duodecimo format (approx 7" x 5") publication, sporting an odd three-quarter height dust sleeve. In addition to a collection of photographs of the king at various stages of this life, the book also has an index, notes regarding source materials for each of the chapters, plus suggestions for further reading. The main text itself is an easy and undemanding read, offering a fairly comprehensive survey of the life and reign of Britain's last king. The book's size is probably commensurate with the biography of a monarch who reined for just 16 years and who didn't live beyond his 57th year. Nevertheless, one can't help feeling that it does little more than scrape the surface of its subject matter, for all that the author does his utmost to reassure his readers that George VI was in no way a deep or complicated man. Something about this book left me strangely unsatisfied, all the same.Another problem is that Philip Ziegler constantly assumes that his readers will be familiar with most of the book's additional cast and so provides them with no introduction and precious little gloss. Whilst it is perhaps a reasonable assumption that figures such as Winston Churchill and Neville Chamberlain need no such introduction, it may be asking a bit much for younger readers especially to know just who Herbert Morrison, Hugh Dalton or even Ernest Bevin might be. The text can also be confusing at times, principally because of the things it fails to explain for those who are unaware of the complications of, for instance, the naming of royal personages. It is never made clear, for examnple, just why 'Prince Berty', as he is referred to throughout the book, should later be crowned as King George VI, or why 'his brother David' became (briefly) Edward VIII. Or what it means that Prince Philip of Greece "had no name".These minor faults and irritations notwithstanding, the book does a good job of dispelling many of the rumours and myths which have over the years surrounded George VI and his actions, setting the record straight once and for all regarding his attitudes both to various of his family members and to his duties and responsibilities in general. More than anything, the book does an excellent job of emphasising the sense of duty that George displayed throughout his life, and how important was the role he (and his wife) played in humanising the role of the Crown and securing a place for the monarchy in the hearts of the British public for generations afterwards. In short: an interesting, if not an exactly riveting read.

By Natalie Ziegler Great short read, not going to tell you really anything different than the larger volumes but put together nicely. The paper band on the covers is not great for anyone who wants to be keeping the book in their collection, it won't last long.

Everything has to be kept secret though, because if anyone finds out at work that they are in a relationship, Jenna will lose her job. Things are also heating up between Michael and Rose. Actually, as this book ends, there might be more to be lost than Jenna's job. This book does end with a large cliffhanger. I received this book for free in return for an honest review, and I love this series. You do need to read the whole series, and read them in order. With that in mind, I recommend for you to get Book 1, then books 2 and 3.

Master the many styles of Wing Chun Kung Fu with this expert martial arts guide. With the fame of Bruce Lee, the conditions in Hong Kong, and the hard work and effort of many of his classmates, the Wing Chun of the late master Yip Man became one of the most well-known and popular Chinese martial arts in the world. Although this gave Wing Chun international recognition, it also led to a lot of misconceptions. Due to a lack of authentic information, many mistakenly came to assume that the renowned Yip Man was the sole inheritor of the style and that his Wing Chun was the lone version of the art.In fact, there are several different and distinct systems of Wing Chun. Unfortunately, over the years most of these systems have remained unseen or unreported to all but a few—until now.Profusely illustrated with over 300 historical photographs, Complete Wing Chun presents seldom seen information on a dozen branches of the Wing Chun art. It offers the reader a side-by-side comparison of these arts by outlining each system in terms of history, principles, basics, and training methods.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. We need more books like this By MR LIAM B KEELEY I remember seeing an article, I think by Jane Hallander, in a martial arts magazine more than a dozen years ago, with an intriguing account of a Wing Chun type style called pao fa lien. I thought it an exceptionally interesting article, and it certainly made me wonder what other forms of Wing Chun were still alive in China and its neighbouring countries. To most Westerners, Yip Man's style has become the standard when it comes to Wing Chun, and so it was fascinating to learn of the existence of other branches. Not only is this a groundbreaking book, but it could be the start of a new genre in martial arts books. What we have here is a fine compilation of information about no less than eight styles of Wing Chun and briefer mention of half a dozen others. The authors themselves are from diverse backgrounds and styles of wing chun, and I can only applaud their vision and maturity in working together to present such a wide range of information to the martial arts public. Very briefly, they are Robert Chu, resident in California, a practitioner of Yip Man, Gu Lao, and Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun styles; Rene Ritchie, of Eastern Canada, a student of the Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun style; and Y. Wu who resides in Singapore and practices the Nanyang and Yip Man Wing Chun styles.Since most readers are probably more familiar with the Yip Man style, I'd like to focus on the lesser known styles in this review. You'll be glad to know that pao fa lien is one of the eight styles featured in this fascinating volume, and it was the first one that I turned to when I inspected the book. We are told that the art is composed of 10 empty-hand sets, four wooden dummy sets, and over a half dozen weapon sets. The three trademark empty-hand sets of wing chun, siu nim tao (little idea), chum kiu (seeking bridge), and bui jee (darting fingers), make up the basic level of forms training. While the weapons sets focus on the familiar (at least to wing chun practitioners) long pole and double knives, there are also other weapons such as the 13 section whip, the scholar's sword, the trident, and the Kwan dao. It seems that there are two varieties of sticky hands practice within the various wing chun systems, one resembling more the pushing hands of tai chi rather than the "rolling" sticky hands that are more familiar to most of us, and the pao fa lien system uses the "tai chi" variety.Among the other little known styles is Nanyang Wing Chun, which, we are told, includes the three typical sets of wing chun, the wooden dummy training, and the typical weapons: the pole and the double knives. In addition, it has a number of other empty hand sets, one of which seems to indicate some kind of relationship between Wing Chun and white eyebrow boxing (Pak Mei). A fascinating insight was the mention of the so-called "separate techniques." In the Gu Lao style, no use is made of forms. The founder, Leung Jan, passed his style on in the form of a 40 point system. We are told on page 47, that "One should not simply look at the 40 points as techniques, but as to teach the fighting skills of wing chun. When the basics are mastered, a student can then do combinations and permutations of the techniques while moving left and right, with high or low stances, at high, middle, or low levels, to the front and back, and/or while advancing or adjusting the steps. Advanced practitioners can reach the level of being able to change and vary their movements with empty hands or the double knives."I find this emphasis on perfecting single techniques absolutely fascinating, and it fits in with what Adam Hsu has to say about the importance of perfecting single techniques in his new book, The Sword Polisher's Record, where he asks: "Is it necessary to learn forms?" We are also told in the section on Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun, that some previously "separate" techniques have been formalized into training sets. It makes me think that this movement of techniques from single, separate techniques into sets is the norm, at least in Chinese boxing styles, and would seem to indicate that most styles start with a group of separate techniques which then gradually coalesce into a set or sets. While this book is probably of most value to wing chun and jkd practitioners, I hope it will serve as a model of more comparative studies of the often amazing variety within a single system. Two related styles from Fukien, Emperor Fist, aka Grand Ancestor Fist, and Five Ancestors Fist, and on the Okinawan side, Uechi-ryu and Goju-ryu, are prime candidates for this kind of study. We need more books like this.

Obviously this book is not a "How to" book since the title says it's about history and tradition. It's hard to go back in time and see the past in focus without good documentation on the Chinese part due to secrecy. Nonetheless this book was very well written and it gives a more clear view of Wing Chun's roots. Perhaps this book will help to silence some of the traditional hog wash I've heard and read from so called masters. One thing I'd like to know more about is the European influence on the art. Surely when the Westerners came over to China in the 19th century and before, some fights must have taken place. From my studies I know they faired well and I think this probably influenced Wing Chun through the great Leung Jan. Have you noticed that Wing Chun doesn't look like most other Kung Fu styles?

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Inadequate research & biased favor for Yip Man & Yuen KaySan By A Customer Without adequate research and candid comparisons, the authors are too hasty to claim that all Wing Chun schools are the same (p116 -- the three main boxing forms are fairly consistent in organization throughout the various styles; p117 -- All have, and none have.) Their statement appears to be made out of respect for the various schools. However, by ignorng the obvious differences in curricula and by generalizing the similarities of the three main forms, they are now ready to extol their practiced styles toward the end of their text -- the Yip Man and Yuen Kay-Shan styles (p118-120.) These two styles have been subtly positioned to be the standard of reference for comparative studies. Hence the differences found in other Wing Chun styles are ascribed to influences from non Wing Chun kung fu.
