Although Herodotus is known as the Father of History, Thucydides (460-395 B.C.) could have made a pretty good claim himself. Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War recounts the 5th century BC war between Greek city states Sparta and Athens through the year 411 BC. Due to this masterpiece, Thucydides has been dubbed the father of "scientific history", because of his strict standards of evidence-gathering and analysis in terms of cause and effect without reference to intervention by the gods, as outlined in his introduction to his work.Thucydides has also been called the father of the school of political realism, which views the relations between nations as based on might rather than right. His text is still studied at advanced military colleges worldwide, and the Melian dialogue remains a seminal work of international relations theory. More generally, Thucydides showed an interest in developing an understanding of human nature to explain behavior in such crises as plague, massacres, as in that of the Melians, and civil war. Thucydides account of the war ends during the 21st year of the fighting, suggesting he died unexpectedly.

By Sylvia Wadlington The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides is a joy to read because it is so well structured and written, even though it is several thousand years old. Don't mistake this for some antique text that is full of the romantic past, if you changed the people and place names it could have been written last week. The analysis of the political problems that led to this war are so clearly and well reported by the writer that even beyond its historical value is the value of its literary quality. Today's journalists and historians would do well to study this work, if not to improve their own work or to use as an example, but for the sheer pleasure of reading something so well formed and thought out.

A Review of the Barnes & Noble Edition By QT I'm very much in agreement with the other reviewers in term of Thucydides' great writing and the timeless lessons about human nature. I will instead review this Barnes & Noble edition. B&N Classics is known for publishing old translations that are now public property or commissioning relatively unknown translators (sometimes those who have only a Master's in the field they are translating) and then having some well known specialists to either edit or write the introduction to lend some credential to the work. The translating quality might or might not be of a high caliber. This particular edition of The History of the Peloponnesian is translated by Richard Crawley. Crawley's translation is a master work. The language flows easily and fluidly. It's easy to comprehend and a joy to read. It's a modern translation so no Victorian words to stump you. You can really jump right in and read without any problem. One problem with this translation, as with most translations, is that it does not contain enough maps. Thucydides meticulously details and records each location that major or minor events took place. It's extremely necessary to have maps of these locations in order to understand their strategic significance, not only their military significance, but also what these places mean for the people who are fighting over it. It would be like studying the Nazi invasion of Russia without knowing the where Russia is, what its geographical layout looks like, and what kind of climate it has. Richard Crawley is also the translator for the "Landmark Thucydides" which is two times more expensive than this edition. That particular edition contains extensive notes and maps that will make non-experts have a true experience of Thucydides. Overall, the B&N is an excellent bare bone edition to just read. And finally, the paper quality is quite good for such an inexpensive edition. It's much better quality than Penguin or some of the other publishers out there. It will last on your shelf a lot longer than some other editions.

Cannot recommend Thucydides too highly By Marshall Lord Who should read Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War ?* Anyone who wants to understand how free societies can descend into tyranny:* Anyone who does not realise that merely holding free elections is not enough to preserve a society worth living in, especially if you don't combine democracy with the rule of law:* Anyone who needs to understand how two or more nations can stumble into a war devastating to both:* Anyone who imagines that genocide and ethnic cleansing were limited to our own era:* Anyone interested in reading one of the first works of true history ever written. In other words this history of a terrible war nearly two and half thousand years ago is as relevant in the first decade of the third millenium as it was when it was written, four centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ. If I had to nominate one historical work for my son and daughter to read, I would think carefully between this volume, Suetonius's "The 12 Caesars", and Herodotus's "Histories", but Thucydides "History of the Poloponnesian war" would edge it.You cannot take every word in this book for granted, but Herodotus and Thucydides came closer to an objective search for truth than any writer whose works survive and was writing before them or for centuries afterwards. The story of the tragic wars, initially between Athens and Sparta, which decimated Greek civilisation between 431BC and 404 BC is absolutely gripping, and Thucydides brings the story to life for me.The translation by Richard Crawley was written more than 130 years ago, and in some versions, slightly revised by R.C. Feetham in 1903. Despite being more than a century old, I found the translation to be accessible and easy to understand. I understand from those who know more about history than I do that Crawley's translation is now preferred by current experts to the rival Victorian translation by Benjamin Jowett which provides more of a general sense of Thucydides' writing but is less good at conveying the detail. The most irritating thing about Thucydides book is that it stops suddently in the middle of a sentence in 411 BC, shortly after the overthrow of democracy in Athens and the Athenian naval victory at the Dardanelles. E.g. well before the actual resolution of the conflict between Athens and Sparta, let alone the subsequent struggle between both cities and Thebes. If, like me, this leaves you wanting to learn more about what happened next, your best bet is to read Xenophon's "A history of my times" which was deliberately written to follow on from Thucydides, to such an extent that it actually starts with the words "And after this."The reputation of Xenophon among historians as a reliable source has fallen dramatically over the past few decades, and he is undoubtedly not in the same class as Thucydides as a historian, but he certainly is in the same class as a storyteller and he does complete the story of the war.

Excerpt from Life and Correspondence of Henry Knox: Major-General in the American Revolutionary ArmyThe materials for this Memoir, prepared a short time since for the "Memorials of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati," have been mainly derived from the original letters and papers of General Knox. These papers, which fill fifty-six large portfolios, include, besides Knox's own letters and military papers, many of the letters of Washington, Greene, and other prominent actors in the Revolution and a variety of documents illustrating the history and settlement of that part of Maine included in the Muscongus or Waldo patent. About the year 1840 they were placed by the family in the hands of Hon. Charles S. Daveis of Portland, who began, but did not finish, a memoir of Knox; and in 1853 they were transferred, with the same object, to Mr. Joseph Willard of Boston, a gentleman eminently qualified for the task, but who unfortunately died before its completion. During their transit by water from Portland to Boston, the vessel in which they were embarked was wrecked, and they were slightly injured, having been for some hours submerged.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I only wish it were updated/expanded for all of the material that's been accumulated since 1873! I think the Henry Knox Montpelier site has over 40 Microfilm rolls, so it would probably increase the size of the book considerably. But until that happens, this is the best you're going to get.

Beth is the boss's secretary and has no one and has lead a sheltered life. When she see the boss's son again, who is a bad ass, he shows her a dominant, sexual experience she will never forget. She does not want to proceed any further with the relationship because she does not want her boss to find out. Then her boss invites her to their home for Christmas. Stay tune for book 2!!

The d\s aspect of this romance is balanced with the promise of trust and respect, and is lacking the degradation that so many mistake for this type of relationship. I definitely find that quite refreshing. Can't wait for the rest of the collection!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just do it. By Amanda Seriously one of the best stories I've read in awhile! I don't normally do reviews, because so many are already done before mine, but this definitely a must read!! It may seem short, but it gets you sucked in so quick, it's hard to stop! The ending will make you smile, as it ends in an ironic way. Just take the plunge, you won't regret it!

In 1952, John Cage shocked audiences with 4'33", his compositional ode to the ironic power of silence. From Cage's minimalism to Chris Burden's radical performance art two decades later (in one piece he had himself shot), the post-war American avant-garde shattered the divide between low and high art, between artist and audience. They changed the cultural landscape.Feast of Excess is an engaging and accessible portrait of "The New Sensibility," as it was named by Susan Sontag in 1965. The New Sensibility sought to push culture in extreme directions: either towards stark minimalism or gaudy maximalism. Through vignette profiles of prominent figures-John Cage, Patricia Highsmith, Allen Ginsberg, Andy Warhol, Anne Sexton, John Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Erica Jong, and Thomas Pynchon, to name a few-George Cotkin presents their bold, headline-grabbing performances and places them within the historical moment. This inventive and jaunty narrative captures the excitement of liberation in American culture. The roots of this release, as Cotkin demonstrates, began in the 1950s, boomed in the 1960s, and became the cultural norm by the 1970s.More than a detailed immersion in the history of cultural extremism, Feast of Excess raises provocative questions for our present-day culture.

Feast of Excess: A Cultural History of the New Sensibility, by George Cotkin

Review "With great verve, George Cotkin's Feast of Excess demonstrates beyond any doubt that the in-your-face culture of provocation we rightly associate with the 1960s had much deeper roots and a long and varied life. Ranging impressively through all the arts, nicely balanced between anecdote and analysis, this book cuts a wide swath through postwar American culture." --Morris Dickstein, author of Dancing in the Dark and Gates of Eden

"Feast of Excess is a tour de force. George Cotkin moves across a vast array of figures who created the New Sensibility, traversing different media like painting, photography, music, performance art, literature, and journalism. Both sympathetic yet critical-neither a curmudgeonly neoconservative nor a blind partisan-Cotkin manages to provide a full picture of what some historians call the long Sixties. This book will serve as the work on the New Sensibility for years to come. And to top it all off, it's a pleasure to read." --Kevin Mattson, author of Just Plain Dick: Richard Nixon's Checkers Speech and the "Rocking, Socking" Election of 1952

"George Cotkin brings his signature inventiveness and subtlety to an American cultural period and style that previously lacked a name. Feast of Excess makes vividly real the ragged debauchery and blunt-force iconoclasm of the New Sensibility of extravagance of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. This is an utterly arresting book." --Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen, author of American Nietzsche: A History of an Icon and His Ideas

"Great stories, provocative ideas, unexpected links - this book is a festival in itself. Superb." --Sarah Bakewell, author of How to Live: A Life of Montaigne

"Cotkin goes above and beyond in this marvelously well-crafted cultural history of the new sensibility... This fascinatingly dense yet digestible accounting of the new sensibility is highly recommended for scholars and fans of U.S. 20th-century culture." -- Library Journal (starred review)

"...a rich understanding of how and why postwar artists and writers revolted against social norms that constricted desire." -- Bookforum

"...dazzling work of cultural history... the book fascinates on every page." -- Boston Globe

About the Author George Cotkin is Emeritus Professor of History at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. His previous books include Existential America, Morality's Muddy Waters, and Dive Deeper: Journeys with Moby-Dick.

Dallas He was the beginning of my heart . . . and the end of it. I was only fifteen years old when he claimed it and twenty when he took it with him. They say what is meant to be will find a way. But when you have changed to the point of no return, how can anything ever be the same? Seven years later, Dean Martin waltzed back into my life in hopes of resuming what I had fought so hard to forget, but he was in for a wake-up call. I was no longer the naïve woman he had left . . . and I was no longer his. I met the love of my life and my soul mate when I was fifteen. I knew that; he knew that. He wanted that girl back. I wanted to forget she ever existed. Dean What I thought was my pre-destined path was very much an illusion. Living seven years with regret, I realized too late that I was broken, and that I only had myself to blame. I thought love could wait . . . but it didn’t. We’d had it all those years ago, and then I foolishly left it behind. She was all that mattered. She was all there ever was. There was no life without Dallas, no reason . . . except her. No matter how hard she tried to convince me, I knew I had to once again make her mine, to make her remember . . . the fall. Mature audiences only. I was destroyed!! Seriously didn't see that coming and let me tell you, I don't cry often while reading, so when a book invokes those kinds of emotions from me, well, then I am THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED!!!- Wrapped Up in ReadingI have a list..a list of authors that I will read no matter what they write, this woman is on said list. This book is a true testament of why she is. - Dawn Two Unruly GirlsTheir journey from best friends to lovers felt true and the pace of the story worked perfectly. By Patty from Wrapped Up In Reading Book Blog 5+++++++++++++ WAY TO GO MARTIN STARS!!!!!!I have a new book boyfriend and his name is DEAN!This man is GORGEOUS. A sharp dresser!! And a MASTER at the SEXY TIMES!!! All I kept thinking was how much I wanted to live in the pages of this book and make Dean my own!!Well I decided HE's MINE!!!!This is a story of friends who turn into lovers, but then life gets in the way, which ultimately tears them apart. And after all the pain and regret, can two people who were always meant to be, overcome their insecurities and get that second chance at love?Dallas and Dean meet while in High School. She is a freshman, and he is a senior. From the moment they lay eyes on each other, they feel a strong connection. This is definitely a case of love at first sight, but Dean thinks their three year age difference is too much at that point in their lives, so he decides to become Dallas' best friend instead. When they both end up at the same college a few years later, things get serious between the two. Dean can no longer hide his feelings for Dallas and after a bit of angst the two seem to be inseparable and heading towards a promising future. I must say that there's some pretty amazing sexy times here and I wanted so desperately to be Dallas! Dean is half Spanish and ladies when he starts speaking in his native tongue, I melted into a puddle every time!!Towards the end of their first year together as a couple, Dean is graduating and going off to NYC, to med school. Dallas, in my opinion, makes a big mistake here and so starts the heart break and what seems to be the end of their relationship. This story is told from the present day where both Dallas and Dean are doctors and will end up crossing paths again, seven years after having broken up. But we do get many flashbacks so we become fully invested in these two characters and you can't help but root for them to find their way back to each other. Wow the angst, it was at times unbearable. BUT, I am a sucker for angst, so this fed my addiction perfectly!!Did I mention already how incredibly STEAMY the sex gets??!!! Well let's just say Dean gets even better in the sex department when the two meet up years later. I was fanning myself, and definitely in need of a long cold shower as well!!What I love about Kate's writing style is that she's also great at creating some amazing secondary characters. I loved Dallas' parents, whom you will meet in her book titled Room 212, and her younger sister, Rose along with her boyfriend, Grant. I am so excited to get to their book!!The first time I read this book, I was out at the laundromat, and I got to a part so horribly heart breaking, that I was crying big fat ugly tears, and I didn't care if anyone saw me! I was destroyed!! Seriously didn't see that coming and let me tell you, I don't cry often while reading, so when a book invokes those kinds of emotions from me, well, then I am THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED!!!I really don't want to go too much into detail about this one because I want you all to be able to enjoy it. I have to warn there is a cheating element, but it never bothered me because I knew that Dean and Dallas were ALWAYS meant to belong to each other.I loved Kate's last book, Loving The White Liar, but I gotta say this one right here, is HANDS DOWN, her BEST book so far!!! I am not even embellishing a little. I seriously am in love with this story!

The world received a rude introduction to Islamic eschatology (“End of Time” beliefs) via the atrocities of ISIS—which are intended to hotwire the apocalypse and spark the coming of al-Mahdi, the “rightly-guided” primary messianic figure of Islam. But such beliefs long predate al-Baghdadi’s terrorist state, having deep historical and theological roots in Islam, among both Sunnis and Shi`is. Movements led by a Muslim leader claiming to be the Mahdi are a staple of Islamic history, whether as bloody jihads alone (the Mahdist occupation of Mecca, 1979) or as revolutionary movements that created Mahdist states (as with Ibn Tumart of the medieval Maghrib, or the 19th century Sudanese Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad, of Khartoum movie fame). Mahdism has manifested from Morocco to Indonesia, from the 8th to the 21st centuries—as as a key belief of Islam, shows no signs of disappearing in the face of modernity. As the Islamic year 1500 (2076 AD) approaches, apocalyptic fervor in all branches of Islam will only increase—empowering Sunni groups like ISIS and, in particular, the Islamic Republic of Iran. This book should prove helpful to anyone wishing to explore these aspects of Islam, and why US policy makers are so woefully unprepared to deal with modern manifestations of apocalyptic Islam. This book is by an expert on Islamic history, who has been researching and writing on eschatological beliefs in the world’s second-largest religion since the 1990s—long before the mainstream media jumped on this bandwagon with ISIS. Dr. Timothy Furnish holds a PhD in Islamic history from Ohio State University, and his doctoral dissertation was on Sunni Mahdist movements (using Arabic sources). He is a former US Army Arabic linguist, a recovering college history professor and a sometime media commentator. He has consulted on Islamic world issues to US Special Operations Command, and to the intelligence community. His other books are Holiest Wars: Islamic Mahdis, their Jihads, and Osama bin Laden (2005) and Sects, Lies, and the Caliphate: Ten Years of Observations on Islam (2015).

Background and understanding of ISIS mindset By Shiela Shinholster Having read Dr. Furnish's first book (Holiest Wars - based on his doctoral thesis) and now reading this one, I can tell you that if you want to know the who, what, when, where, and WHY of ISIS, then this is the book to get. It's easy to read, despite the numerous sects and Arabic names that sometimes tangle while reading as they are all new to me, but it's insightful and enlightening. Seeking to understand has lead me to read a number of books on Islam over the past decade. It's not easy unravelling it all but if you have time, it's worth the knowledge you will gain.

Considering current affairs all over the world, especially the Islamic terrorism, I believe the book to be extremely enlightening, especially about the intent ions of ISIS. Dr.Furnish is an expert on Islamic history and both reads and speaks Arabic. I trust his views. I knew Dr. Furnish as a boy who grew up in my hometown. He is a Christian man, and I highly recommend his book. Watch for his next one.

Offering a concise synopsis of the past decade, the eschatological motivations as well as global response are revealed nicely in this concise compendium.

In Angel Messages – Parables of Wisdom for the Thirsting Soul – real angels speak to us prophetically, telling loving stories from the heart. With the brightest comet in the heavens of the century, the spiritual messengers of God arrived in 1970. On April 3, 1970, they began to speak through a humble man, bringing a message of good news to all who will hear. Their words were tape recorded from 1970 through 1989 as they spoke through Ray Elkins, in Globe, Arizona. Now, their words have been transcribed for you. “We have come but for one purpose – to prepare a way for the coming of the Messiah.” Volume 5 of 5, Bringing a New Heaven and a New Earth, shares 47 parables that the angels spoke from 1985 to 1989. Each is beautifully illustrated. These words have never before been published in a collection. But both printings of their first book, Parables for Today, in 1982, sold out. People loved reading and learning from the words of spiritual messengers our Father sends with a message of great love. For the angels bring a message of great joy to all the world – the preparation for the coming of the Messiah! You'll love it too. Listen to their recorded voice. See their message. Learn more about this by clicking on the photo below. Some of the Angel Messages were first published as Parables for Today in 1982 with 142 parables – each given to bring man closer to God. But now you can read all of them. Angel Messages is the complete collection through 1989. This is a beautifully illustrated writing, transcribed from words spoken directly by spiritual messengers of God to you. Parables have long been told to teach men and women. Two thousand years ago, Jesus' disciples asked him, “’Why do you speak to them in parables?' He replied, 'It has been granted to you to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven; but to those others it has not been granted.'...'But happy are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear! Many prophets and saints, I tell you, desired to see what you now see, yet never saw it; to hear what you hear, yet never heard it.'" (Matthew 13:10-15) "In all the teaching to the crowds Jesus spoke in parables….This was to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: 'I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret since the world was made.'" (Matthew 13:35) The spiritual messengers God send today say, "We have come, not to change the laws or the prophecies, but to show man their fulfillment for this time." “We are here to prepare a way for the coming of the Messiah.” “New words shall be written upon the sky, but they must be written in men’s hearts first.” These Angel Messages come to bring fuller meaning to our lives, depth to our souls and bring us closer to God. It is spoken to each of us, in our own way of knowing Him. As a loving Father who created our world, the universes, and every individual soul, the parables are not spoken just to one faith, but to all people of the world. These parables are for today. Here is volume 5 of 5. Once you read it, you’ll want to read the first four volumes. All proceeds will go to further the work of the spiritual messengers of God, Aka, through the non-profit Association on Universal Philosophy, which the angels asked to be formed. If you’d like to join us, please e-mail AUP@earthlink.net for information.

Review The Armageddon Lettersinnovatively and emotively. . . attempts to reverse the presumed apathy of young people toward nuclear holocaust. . . . [Blight and Lang] succeed as pioneers; their transmedia presentation is a great means of waking up a new generation to history and its lessons. ... Blight draws creative connections that grab our attention. ... the authors achieve their heartfelt intention of saturating us with warnings about a nuclear disaster. This multimedia and transmedia project largely works. . . . We are fortunate that we are sitting here now to read about Armageddon, rather than having experienced it—and that second chance is what Blight and Lang have so cleverly marketed to us. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. OUTSTANDING LEARNING FROM HISTORY By Yehezkel Dror This is an original book in form and contents, tied to multimedia platforms on a website. Based on many years of "critical current history" study of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the hard core includes 43 letters and declarations, nearly all by Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro, covering the Crisis. These are put into the context of situations as understood by them in real time. The main historic conclusion is that a devastating nuclear war nearly happened. The lession is that rational behavior in some situations can lead to a catastrophe not desired by the actors. Normatively, as put by Robert McNamara, who actively participated in the project on which this book is based, "the indefinite combination of human fallibility and nuclear weapons will destroy nations" (p. 7), and therefore elimination of nuclear weapons is essential for the survival of humanity - a conclusion reached by the involved leaders. This book realizes "reenactment" as proposed by Robin George Collingwood, getting into the mind of decision makers. Based on recollections of persons involved in the crisis, the authors arrived at reasonable reconstructions of the minds of the three leaders, but still what they really though and felt in real time cannot be known. Even frank recollections cannot reconstruct reliably what was in the mind years ago and before outcomes were known. Some caveats should have been added to the book. But this is a minor point compared to all that can be learned from it, such as on the critical importance of the crucible of experience in the making of serious leaders. All in all this is an outstanding book which should be read by all students of decision making and international relations, and by all senior politicians.Professor Yehezkel DrorThe Hebrew University of Jerusalem

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. seeing leaders as real persons with responsibilities By Humanities Grad This collection of letters and commentary on the very critical situation that developed around the missiles installed on Cuban soil is very relevant to the present day. Interpersonal communication between the leaders in the form of letters played a central and effective role though these men were standing on opposite sides of the issue. The overarching fact is that fallible human beings have huge responsibility for the safety of everyone else on the planet. Protecting the lives of all their people under their care should be the first item on the agenda for any national leader. This disclosed correspondence shows that the leaders must talk with each other and set their priorities based on facts, not mere rumours or assumptions. The book presents these historical leaders as characters in a drama. The inclusion of graphic-novel elements -- well-crafted black&white drawings of Kennedy, Krushchev and Castro each in his separate social milieu -- may help a general reader follow the unfolding dynamics better than plain text. In the 1960s, the black&white comic strip was a very widely-read form of commentary, not all of which was predicated on humour. Apparently the co-authors and publisher wanted to emphasize that this was just three guys having to grapple with their IMAGES of each other, in order to decide the fate of the world. It's to help us 'see' these men as real people, as well as to look at their thought processes and interactions, this remarkable artwork enhances what otherwise might just be printed words on the page.Whether or not there are any flaws in presentation or analysis, it is difficult to assign any lesser than top rating to something this fundamental in our history as the crucial decisions made by political leaders about whether we all lived or died in the 1960s.Fast-forward a few decades, and fear of mass annihilation still looms over us. Hostilities and machinations, and incompleteness or slanting of news coverage, seem to be as bad or worse. We are watching the usual public posturing by leaders whose private thoughts are as inaccessible as ever. If there are no diplomatic contacts between the nations which are the present foci of international war-mongering, will the outcome be worse this time? While we have to "stay tuned" for that answer, let's hope this book gets into the hands of all those responsible for international security, and that considering this correspondence causes them to think about the disastrous consequences of fomenting hate and fear.If the channels of direct communication don't exist today analogous to the ones that existed in the 1960s, let's pray that the publication of these letters might prompt the opening of a channel somewhere so that misconceptions and fears don't drive humanity over the brink into self destruction.

Should be read by every person alive By Rashid N Kapadia Having recently read a few books on the Cuban Missile Crisis, I was familiar with multiple viewpoints and analyses. I watched many documentaries of this crisis too, trying to see and feel it from multiple perspectives. I read all the Kennedy - Khrushchev Letters with increasing fascination. Truly, world leaders are called on to bear the unbearable. Then I read this book. I truly appreciate the work, the heart and the soul that the authors have put into the effort which eventually yielded this book.Their main argument is succinctly and beautifully stated; I agree with the statements: (1) Armageddon is possible; (2) Armageddon is possible even if leaders are rational; (3) Armageddon can become highly probable in a crisis; (4) Armageddon will likely occur inadvertently; (5) Armageddon remains virtually inevitable; (6) nuclear weapons must be abolished. The “critical history” / “what exactly were the major players thinking and feeling?” approach along with the “Familiar names / Psychological context / Present tense / Graphic narrative / Theatrical previews” layout make the book very compelling & immediate.Combine the book with the website’s video, audio, blogs, podcasts, debates, films, animation live action etc., this work is a masterpiece. On the cover of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom” there is a caption “Should be read by every person alive”. An identical caption belongs to the cover of this book.

For a man who grew up to become the “Bull Moose”, Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child, suffering from asthma and other maladies. But his physical weakness actually drove him to be more active, which also fostered an interest in nature. It also helped that Teddy’s family was wealthy, allowing him privileges including home school and the ability to attend Harvard, where he was an athlete and took an interest in naval affairs. After finishing at Harvard, Teddy entered politics, but it didn’t stop him from writing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, establishing himself as a professional writer and historian.  In the 1890s, it was Teddy’s turn to make history, leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War and being decorated for his service with a Medal of Honor. He parlayed his glory into the governorship of New York and then the Vice Presidency under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Teddy was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency.   By the time Roosevelt died in 1919, he was an American icon. Today, Teddy is remembered for being an explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combine into one unique reputation.

By James Gallen "Ranch Life And The Hunting Trail" is Theodore Roosevelt's narrative of his life and experiences during his time in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s. Published in 1888, it displays Roosevelt's writing at this finest. His picture words make the scenes come alive in all their splendor. This is a TR I never knew existed. For anyone with a love of western adventure, this book is it!Besides providing the sheer enjoyment of reading, this book actually teaches the reader much about the life and economy of the era. I had always heard about the open range and the roundup, but this book makes the concepts clear. Cattle and horses were left to feed on the open range. The herds were divided during the roundup, with the calves given the brands of their mothers, as the way to assert property rights in the cattle. The devastation of a severe winter cannot be imagined until you read an eyewitness account, and few are written as well as this. The challenges of the hunt and the unique characters of the West can be experienced vicariously through the pages of this book.Frederic Remington's illustrations add visual images to the written word. This book is an excellent choice for anyone with longing for the lure of the Old West or a window into the world of Theodore Roosevelt.

It is written in Teddy's classic modest style (who else could float the Missouri during spring break up chasing criminals with guns and describe it with as much excitement as buttering toast). It also is a repeat of some of his earlier works as this seems to be a bit of transitional book of when he was about leaving the Elkhorn for the east. The Wilderness Hunter is more poetic and Hunting Trips of a Ranchman is a better read, but the history in this book of how Montana and the Dakotas were made safe by lynch justice makes this one interesting too.The sketches by Remington are wonderfully historic to study and add a great deal to this book. This book though is like all of Teddy's in settling down with a friend and always looking for his next book to find a campfire with him again.Thank God Mr. Roosevelt wrote so many wonderful books.

Review Winner of the 2013 Ignatz Award for Outstanding SeriesWinner of the 2013 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Artist“So many of DeForge’s stories are about transformation…that it’s hard to look at the world around you after reading one of his stories the same way as you did before.” — Scott Cederlund, Panel Patter“DeForge’s work is so different from anything else out there that it looks like it was made on another planet. Yet, it’s the unexpected humanity—his keen observations and sense of humor—that is embedded in all the weirdness that makes his comics a must-read.” — Rich Barrett, mental_floss“Like the best fairy tales, DeForge uses transformation and strange situations to enter a side door towards human cruelties and tendernesses, betrayals and quiet loyalties, and the confused paths through which we navigate our desires.” — Annie Mok, The Comics Journal“[T]he heart of DeForge’s body of work is in the struggle of his characters/creatures to evolve—physically, mentally, mystically, metaphorically—into something better positioned to survive the consumptive and uncaring character of nature.” — Joe McCulloch, The Comics Journal“Michael DeForge makes the kind of comics that make me a little uncomfortable. Hallucinatory, abstract, and delicately grotesque, he views the peculiarities of human behaviour with an almost anthropological eye, and adapts them into surreal excursions into an extraordinary exploration of the mundane.” — John Parker, ComicsAlliance“This issue continues DeForge’s exploration of a world where fantasies can be hauntingly painful and bizarre.” — Heidi MacDonald, The Comics Beat“With DeForge, reality becomes a horror show not of blood and gore but of uncertainty...His stories of changing identity combined his existence-warping artwork make us question our own concept of self.” — Scott Cederlund, Panel Patter“DeForge’s comic universe reflects the dark corners of our real one, but — sensitive and hopeful storyteller that he is — he hasn’t forgotten about the exuberance, wonder and happiness there either.” — Chris Hampton, The Toronto Star“Toronto's comics arts scene is thriving, and young Michael DeForge, with his penchant for body horror and cute-meets-perverse aesthetic, is at its hub.” — Carla Gillis, Glenn Sumi, NOW Magazine“DeForge’s world is not for the squeamish. But it is one whose grotesqueries increasingly mirror, rather than distort, the mundane world with which we think we are familiar.” — Sean Rogers, The Globe and Mail“One of the most exciting and unpredictable cartoonists working in comics, Michael DeForge has a unique perspective that juggles humor, tragedy, whimsy and horror to create unforgettable stories.” — Oliver Sava, Los Angeles Times"Everything and everyone in his [DeForge's] drawings is dripping, bubbling and developing unsightly growths. He warps and dents the assured, geometrical forms of vintage newspaper strips and new wave-era graphics into oddly adorable horrors; his stories are prone to whiplash formal shifts.” — Douglas Wolk, The New York Times“Prolific young Canadian-born avant-garde artist DeForge has become one of his generation’s most admired cartoonists, and this is his first sizable collection…While often willfully unsettling, DeForge’s work resonates on many levels.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Lose is a series that started good and just keeps getting better By Sam the Sham A full-color beaut with two shorts* and a long centerpiece called "Movie Star". DeForge is reaching new levels of design and storytelling. It's wild to see how far he has come since his work just five years ago. Lose is a series that started good and just keeps getting better. "Movie Star" has got the strange surreal vibe DeForge is great at pulling off but has a more poignant and serious tone than previous work.*The two shorts (Adults and Boy) were previously available digitally to subscribers of DeForge's Patreon.com page

Maybe he's putting out too much stuff, but the drawings weren't as detailed and inventive as some of his earlier stuff, and the narratives lacked the stunning weirdness of the earlier issues of lose. Nothing to compete with the Canadian Royal Family or Spotting Deer in this one, but still reasonably decent work.

I could stare at these pages for hours either way, and the longer story about a pair of long lost brothers who are reunited through a father and daughters viewing of cheesy action films really s quite fun to read. Deforge really shows his mastery over the comic form here; the pacing is impeccable, he hits each beat, and his simple figures carry so much expression. His limited pallete, as always, is beautiful, and adds an atmosphere that services the tone of the strip, without just turning it into eye candy. Great read, glad to have it on my shelf.
