Raised as a prototype for the Georgian Bratva's obedience drug, 221 fails to think, act, or live for himself; he's his master's perfectly-crafted killing puppet. Standing at six-foot-six, weighing two-hundred-and-fifty pounds, and unrivaled in to-the-death combat, 221 successfully secures business for the Georgian Mafiya Boss of NYC, who rules the dark world of the criminal underground. Until his enemies capture him.

Talia Tolstaia dreams to break from the heavy clutches of Bratva life. She dreams of another life--away from the stifling leash of her Russian Bratva Boss father and from the brutality of her work at The Dungeon, her criminal family's underground death-match enterprise. But when she stumbles upon her family's captive who is more monster than man, she starts to see the man underneath. A powerful, beautiful, damaged man whose heart calls to hers. But sacrifices must be made--blood for blood...life for life...souls for scarred souls...

Fantastic Read By Suzanne This is the second book in the Scarred Souls: Raze and Reap series and this must be read after the first book in order to fully understand and appreciate this story. It begins with Luka driven to fulfill his promise to his friend and brother in arms, 362, by seeking revenge on 362’s captors. It’s through his quest that he discovers 212/Zaal and rescues him. Zaal is more damaged and more drugged than Luka ever was and it’s his story that is told.Talia Tolstaia, Luka’s younger sister, is drawn to the savage beast, 212, that’s holed up in the same dwelling that she escaped to so that she could get away from the Bratva and all that entailed.Of course, Talia and Zaal form a bond as she’s the one to bring him back to humanity. Tillie captured beautifully the raw power and rage yet innocence and tenderness of 212/Zaal and what he’d endured.“Because…you are…for me.”I latched onto Zaal almost instantly and my heart broke for that 8 year old boy who’d had so much loss, pain and brutality. Like Luka/818 in Raze, Zaal was taken at a young age and beaten, broken, drugged and molded into a killing machine for the Georgina Bratva.I felt a bit disconnected from Talia and perhaps it was the long gap between Raze, which I freakin’ loved, and this book. I felt a stronger connection to her in Raze, she seemed to make more of an impression on me than she did in this one. It’s not to say that I didn’t like her because I did but I felt like something was missing. This story is dark, sad and at times, brought out anger in me for the injustice and degradation in the world. Tillie has a natural talent for taking us into the depths of hell on earth and revealing all its ugliness and the ruthlessness of man. Yet, she also shows us that with all things there is a balance and at the other end of the spectrum, she also gives us hope and shows us the relentless power of love and it’s healing force. While mainly told through the POV of Talia and Zaal, Tillie gave us moments from Luka’s POV and let me tell you, this girl was in heaven!Luka is my fav and it was truly wonderful to feel his driving passion to honour his friend, 362, and his love for Kisa, Talia and his new found brother, Zaal. It was also gratifying to see him growing into his destiny as Bratva knayz - the Russian Mafia prince. Finally, I must say, Tillie gave us one hell of a teaser with the way in which this ended. It’s not a cliffhanger of sorts as this story does have a conclusion but it gives us a sneak peek at what’s to come. I’m looking forward to it!

Great, intense, HOT! 4 stars from me :) By Blair And I chose to fall. “You go where I go.”I fell in love with the book Raze a while ago, and at the time I rated it 4 stars. Looking back, it definitely deserves 5 stars as it has stayed with me even months after reading it. I got the ARC of the sequel, Reap, a few days ago and it kind of broke my reading slump, which I’m very happy about! :) Let’s see what I thought about this book.Raze is the book that made me interested in mob romance, so of course I knew I’d read Reap as well. It’s a good book, but I kept comparing it to the first one. I just preferred Raze a bit. That’s not to say Reap wasn’t good, not at all. I had one main problem with it which I’d like to discuss now.Talia, the heroine, was really not likeable.I just couldn’t get past that. To me, she seemed incredibly selfish and very obsessed with finding love. It was a bit weird how she wanted a boyfriend so badly, and I couldn’t help thinking she kind of took advantage of Zaal. I just felt she was a little over-the-top with her need to find love. I understand the need for drama, I just didn’t enjoy her as a character.Zaal, on the other hand, was the perfect Prince Charming, savage edition.I loved him, felt for him, wanted him to get better. His chapters were my favorite and I loved hearing his story. I’m really excited to hear more about him, hopefully… I also loved the cameos by Luka and Kisa, it was fun to read about them again.Tillie Cole really excels at writing raw fight scenes as well as passionate moments, and they make the books really enjoyable. This series, Scarred Souls, is one I would one-click without even giving it a second thought.I wanted to give him the world. I had already given him my soul.I would recommend Scarred Souls to lovers of dark romance, mob romance & contemporary urban stories. Very hot and intense… And make sure to read Raze first!

I could not put these books down and was quickly drawn into this dark and gritty world. We have all read books about the underworlds of organized crime. Whether it is the Italian Mafia, the Russian Mafia, or street organizations, the one thing they all have in common is criminal intent and violence. They are the rulers of the underworld. They are the parasites of humanity. They are ruthless, heartless, and without conscience. They are in it for the power and the money. The ruling sanctions are the ultimate power. The Scarred Souls series dives into the world of the Russian Mafia. There is a power struggle within the infrastructure of this organization. The powerful families are vying for the power. They will do anything to gain the ruling power including using their children as pawns. Their children are being stolen. Their children are being sold into slavery. By taking the heirs they are leaving these powerful families weak. But what happens to these children. Are they murdered? Are they sold into slavery? Or are they turned into monsters? If you guessed one of the above, you would be correct. If you guessed all three, you are on the right track.Reap is the second book and features 221. 221 was taken from his family when he was a young boy. He was turned into a mindless killing machine through illegal drugs, drug enhancements, and mind control. He is no longer a human but a living, breathing, weapon used as a prototype. His existence is an example of making mindless soldiers and fighters to be used for the Russian Mafia. Once again he is kidnapped from the only life that he knows. But this time will be different. This time he will either die or become a member of the human race once again. 221 will find out what kind of man he was meant to be from the ones he has known to be his enemies. The truth will come out, he will find that he has a beating heart and the capacity to love. It will come at a high price. It’s a price worth paying. He will learn the meaning of the age old saying “love thy enemy”.Talia has lived her life under her father’s power. She has always had to look over her shoulder. She has been raised to hate her father’s enemies. But when one is chained up in her basement she begins to question her heritage as well as her integrity. She is beginning to see a man rather than an enemy. She sees someone who needs her love more than her family does. She sees a man that has more heart than anyone she has ever met. She sees her soulmate.Talia and 221 are going to find that love is more powerful than anything their families and enemies can do to them. They just have to know the right way to fight. They have to fight with their hearts. The Scarred Souls Series by Tillie Cole is captivating. There is a powerful story behind each book that is not only emotional but gripping in every sense of the word. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

The A30 Challenger was devised during 1942 as a means of mounting the powerful 17 pounder anti-tank gun on the chassis of what was intended to be the British Army's next Cruiser tank, the Cromwell. The subsequent development programme was subject to a degree of controversy as to the role and efficacy of such a vehicle, and, in the event, only 200 machines were ordered. The first examples did not see action until August 1944, and even then they were often viewed only as "stop-gaps" until the arrival of the A34 Comet. However, there were those, especially among its design team at Rolls-Royce in Belper, Derbyshire, who came to believe that the Challenger represented a missed opportunity to provide the Army with an unprecedented combination of firepower and mobility. This book examines the story of what would be an innovative and successful, if somewhat rarefied, tank and its subsequent development as a self-propelled anti-tank gun.

Emotional highs and lows By Carrie Renteria This is one incredible series so far by KB Winters.I am so invested in this series it's crazy. Kat is incredibly strong and I really dislike her ex Mitch. I love the relationship that she has with Jace and the connection that the two of them have is so incredible. It really seems that no matter what is thrown at the two of them they try and work through it. I really hope that she sticks by him through all of the changes that he has coming up. This series is so emotional and it has so many highs and lows it will keep you on your toes the entire time!

I like her female characters By Debbie I only read about 2 handful of authors, and KB Winters is one of them, and because this I am always sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next book to come. This story is like that. I like her female characters, in the fact that they are strong women, and this one especially in so far that she is in her thirties, which for me is more relate-able, since I am 40. Keep up the good writing KB Winters, because I will keep reading yours.

What he explains to her about his past makes her feel something that she can't explain. But then she sees Mitch and he tells her what is on his mind and that just throws a wrench in things or does it. But what set Kat back on her heels is the news that Jace delivers after returning from reserves.

While this zine (it's not really a zine, it's more like a book) covers a lot of different genre of films, it still sticks mainly with its bread-and-butter: the horror genre. Mixed with some great original artwork and some rare ad mats, the writing is still the most important thing to me and Issue #4 doesn't disappoint. I love that we now have "print on demand" and while some zines look like they were designed by a blind man, EVILSPEAK gives the inside of their zine a nice professional sheen. I love this zine and if you would just give it a chance, you will, too. It's best that I don't reveal what's inside the pages. Sometimes the best surprise is opening up the cover. There are only four or five "print on demand" zines that I buy. This one is at the top of my list. Don't deny yourself a horror education. Buy this zine. Thank me later.

Articles on Satan's Children, The Witchmaker, Mattei's women in prison films, Loreley's Grasp, a HUGE retrospective of Ossorio's Blind Dead flicks, DUDE Werewolf's Shadow, The Deadly Spawn, Don't Go in the House, 200+ pages of greatness. No fat. No ScyFy channel movie review! Yeah, this is my kind of fanzine. (book)

Reminds me of all the crazy stuff I watched in the eighties. Plus they seem to have the same experiences I had so it's relatable. Can't wait for the next issue!

Since the Battle of Little Bighorn, George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) has possessed one of the most unique places in American history. Although he was a capable cavalry officer who served honorably during the Civil War, he remains one of the most instantly identifiable and famous military men in American history due to the fact he was killed during one of the country’s most well known and ignominious defeats, the Battle of Little Bighorn. And yet, this one relatively insignificant battle during America’s Indian Wars has become one of the country’s most mythologized events and continues to fascinate Americans nearly 140 years later. Though he’s now best remembered for “Custer’s Last Stand”, George Armstrong Custer began June 25, 1876 as one of America’s better regarded cavalry officers, and a man whose ambitions might one day take him to higher office. In fact, decades before radio and television existed, Custer mastered the art of public relations, dressing impeccably and having newspaper correspondents accompany him on campaign, all in an effort to help cultivate and enhance his legacy. Custer’s efforts worked, with one biographer noting that Americans during the 19th century viewed him as “a cavalier without fear and beyond reproach." Much like famous Confederate cavalry leader JEB Stuart, Custer added substance to the style. Despite being in his early 20s when the Civil War started, Custer rose through the ranks so quickly that he famously commanded a brigade of Michigan cavalrymen at Gettysburg, fighting the vaunted JEB Stuart and his horsemen to a standstill on the climactic 3rd day of that battle. Custer’s success continued through until the end of the war, with his men playing an integral role during the Appomattox Campaign that forced the surrender of Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.Had Custer’s career ended there, he would have been both successful and largely forgotten. Instead, the last 10 years of his life were full of political and military intrigue, as he attempted to position himself both in politics and the Army while making himself one of the best known fighters of the Indian Wars. Those actions, along with the Battle of Little Bighorn, made him controversial even in his day, but with his death coming to be widely viewed as a sacrifice for his country, his legend and legacy grew throughout the nation. No matter what critics or supporters thought of him, George Armstrong Custer was unquestionably relevant.

"Boots and Saddles" or Life in Dakota with General Custer, by Elizabeth B. Custer

Review “This is a warmly human, first-hand account of the hardships, disappointments, fun and flattery, joys, and heartaches of women who accompanied their military husbands across the sage, up turbulent rivers, over the badlands of Dakota into the far reaches of the Western frontier, during the Indian troubles of the mid-1870s.”—Montana: The Magazine of Western History (Montana: The Magazine of Western History)

About the Author George Armstrong Custer was an 1861 West Point graduate and a dashing officer in the United States Cavalry during the Civil War.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. General George Custer was ordered to the Dakotas in the spring of 1873 and Elizabeth Custer's Boots and Saddles (the title comes from the bugle call for the cavalry to mount) chronicles their life until the general's death in 1876.

A counterpoint to the purely military memoir, her account provides details about everyday garrison life at Fort Abraham Lincoln, including sketches of townspeople, Indians, camp followers, and soldiers, as well as daily routines, and special amusements. The Custers lived in the Dakotas when it was still the "Wild West" and western legends such as Buffalo Bill and Rain in the Face also stride through the pages of this book.

Elizabeth Custer arrived at the fort during a blizzard with a seriously ill husband, frostbitten soldiers stumbling into the house, and terrified animals howling outside - and coped with it all. She also traveled with Custer on scouting expeditions and visited Sioux villages:

"The village was a collection of tepees of all sizes, the largest being what is called the Medicine Lodge, where the councils are held. It was formed of tanned buffalo hides, sewed together with buckskin thongs, and stretched over a collection of thirty-six poles...The poles are lashed together at the tops and radiate in a circle below. The smoke was pouring out of the opening above, and the only entrance to the tepee was a round aperture near the ground, sufficiently large to allow a person to crawl in. Around the lodge were poles from which were suspended rags; in these were tied their medicines of roots and herbs, supposed to be a charm to keep off evil spirits. The sound of music came from within; I crept tremblingly in after the general, not entirely quieted by his keeping my hand in his and whispering something to calm my fears as I sat on the buffalo robe beside him..."

Compare this to her description of the General's library:

"Over his desk, claiming a perch by itself on a pair of deer antlers, was a great white owl. On the floor before the fireplace...was spread the immense skin of a grisly bear. On a wide lounge at one side of the room my husband used to throw himself down on the cover of a Mexican blanket, often with a dog for his pillow. The camp chairs had the skins of beavers and American lions thrown over them. A stand for arms in one corner held a collection of pistols, hunting knives, Winchester and Springfield rifles, shotguns and carbines, and even an old flintlock musket as a variety. From antlers above hung sabers, spurs, riding whips, gloves and caps, field glasses, the map case, and the great compass used on marches. One of the sabers was remarkably large, and when it was given to the general during the war it was accompanied by the remark that there was doubtless no other arm in the service that could wield it. (My husband was next to the strongest man while at West Point, and his life after that had only increased his power.)...Large photographs of the men my husband loved kept him company on the walls; they were of General McClellan, General Sheridan, and Mr. Lawrence Barrett. Over his desk was a picture of his wife in bridal dress..."

Courage, grit, compassion, and humor...Elizabeth Custer had them all, and they are evident here. Boots and Saddles is one of the few books of military life in the 1800's from a woman's perspective and invaluable for that reason alone, but it is doubly important for the light it sheds on George Custer. Fun reading as well!

"Rose Colored Glasses' AND "Little Life on the Priairie" By CriminalJusticeteacherdotcom Althought the opinions of Custer and life with the calvary are viewed through (very) rosy glasses, Mrs. G.A. Custer is a witty and prolific writer. She also gives little-known insight into everyday happenings in life on the prairie and how women survived the journey. Particularly interesting are the dynamics of relationships between women when living literally in the middle of nowhere, surviving the harshest of climates, with few friends, the same friends, for extended times. Also interesting is the relationship between people of color and the white soldiers. Custer is an enigma, and readers should read this book but also others ("Son of the Morning Star" is the best thus far) to get a glimpse at the man. Libby Custer falls into poetic verse at times, but this can be refreshing - there are not many writings of women in these times available.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Following the Guidon! By Rory Coker This is the first of three books George Armstrong Custer's widow Elizabeth Bacon Custer (EBC hereafter) wrote about her life with the General. It begins with Custer and the 7th being assigned to North Dakota, and ends with the expedition which led to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. EBC is a good writer within the limitations of the "style" of 1880s-1890s nonfiction. One has to allow for the fact that for her, G. A. Custer was the tallest, strongest, smartest, wittiest, bravest and most omnicompetent man alive. [It's worth pointing out that she often also describes all the troopers riding with Custer as "physically perfect, absolutely splendid specimens of manhood in its prime."] Also following the style of the period, EBC almost entirely omits the names of those she writes about. But otherwise her word-portrait of the life of an officer's wife in the utter desolation of the frontier forts during the Plains Indian Wars is effective, vivid and often moving. There are so many good stories here I don't want to spoil any by hinting at them. The most famous is EBC's account of "Old Nash," a Mexican laundress who earned several small fortunes with her expert sewing and tailoring, was much sought-after as a marriage partner despite her dark complexion and broad shoulders, and who turned out to be the best midwife around... despite....A few of the many things that impressed me with EBC's powers of observations--- When the great chiefs and warriors of the plains came to visit Custer, she noted that they (contrary to modern stereotype) were physically almost completely undeveloped, with geek-like pipestem arms... and she understood the reason: that males among the Plains indians did essentially no physical labor whatsoever. Another fine passage involves the relationship between Custer and his favorite indian scout, the famous Bloody Knife. According to EBC Bloody Knife was relentlessly sarcastic concerning the skills and abilities of white men, and Custer in particular. When on a hunting expedition with Custer, Bloody Knife would keep up a running narrative of belitting remarks concerning Custer's unfamiliarity with and incompetence with firearms. As soon as Custer got off a good shot, Bloody Knife would fall silent and express his admiration with a brief smile, which Custer obviously treasured far more than many sentences of insincere and overdone flattery. It reminds me a bit of a comment supposedly made by Wyatt Earp about his great friend Doc Holliday: "He can always make me laugh!"There is no gossip about Custer's notoriously poor relations with many of the other officers and men of the 7th Cavalry. EBC defends this by saying that Custer deliberately did not tell her of feuds and enemies, because he wanted her as hostess to treat all members of the 7th with equal courtesy. However, this excuse is contradicted within the book by extracts from letters written to her by Custer, which refer to feuds and enemies in ways that would have made no sense if EBC were not fully informed,Recommended for anyone curious about the life of Cavalry officers, troopers and their families on the "rim of empire" in the 1870s.

A beautifully written book By A Customer There are so few well written and personally lived books about the people of the northern great plains, but this is one of them. Mrs. Custer gives intimate details of life in the cavalry and the Dakotas of a time now gone. She tells of blizzards, heat, insects, dangers and people in a most readable way that draws the reader in. This is a special book that speaks to the plainsman's heart.

Ebook PDF Through Trials to Glory: The Life and Trials of Loraine and Richard Kelly, by Loraine Kelly

A memoir about my life as the wife of Richard Kelly, trying to make sense of the trials we endured, and about survival after it all fell apart. Those who knew Richard Kelly will have unanswered questions about his downfall, which became a personal tragedy and an American tragedy. Nothing in his life would have forecasted the outcome. He spent most of his remaining years searching for as many details of the organized plot to destroy him as he could, looking for justice and struggling to live with the aftermath of the bomb that went off in the middle of his life. Kelly was conducting his own investigation after he realized he was surrounded by shady characters who were exposed as convicted felons hired by the Fbi. The Fbi was duty bound to protect him as a member of Congress. What led the Fbi to focus on Kelly? The better question would be, who led the Fbi to focus on Kelly? Trials will come. Life is tough, but God is good. Trials are not an opposition to our happiness but an opportunity for holiness and maturity, which can lead to true joy.

The Intensely Human Story Of A Journey Into Politics And The Author's Faith As She Persevered By Amazon Customer A compelling read about politics from rural Florida to the State Capitol to the halls of Congress and beyond! As a resident of Pasco County, Florida, at the time reflected in the book, active in community activities and politics, and acquaintance of many of the book's players, I can attest to the authenticity of much of the story. Kelly pulls no punches, naming names of local, state and national officials, some deceased, but many still living, whom she knew and with whom she was intimately familiar, giving insight into campaigns, for her husband, that she organized and ran, and revealing details of political and social events, many of which were reported in prominent local and national media. Her former and current friendships with prominent political and media personalities adds an unexpected reality to a story that, in Kelly's words, "needed to be told." This is a must read for anyone who follows politics, as it reveals many of the rewards and pitfalls awaiting those who choose to seek office at any level in our Democratic political process, while bringing into focus the agony and ecstasy experienced by the the author in her journey from small-town Southern life to prominence in the historic halls of Government in Washington.

On the east bank of the Wabash River, Terre Haute was established as a real estate venture in 1816. Two hundred years of history is chronicled here, one day at a time, with stories of its remarkable events and colorful characters. In 1915, Coca-Cola introduced its iconic green bottle, designed and manufactured locally at Root Glass Company. Giving credit to the town’s “Sin City” moniker, authorities seized the largest moonshine still ever discovered in Vigo County on July 15, 1929. Many notable Hoosiers have called Terre Haute home, too, including labor leader Eugene V. Debs and Tony Hulman of Indianapolis 500 fame. Every date on the calendar reveals a story to fascinate, educate or entertain.

Interesting reading By Steve Nothing too dramatic but rather a simple day-to-day recounting of life on the frontier as a woman assigned to various military encampments. It gives a realistic view of the racial perceptions and prejudices associated with the times. It also reminds of the simplistic beauty and contentment that existed prior to "modernization" of mankind. The book was scanned from its original version and there are numerous typos that can be distracting but it's still worth a read.

Killing Reagan: The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency is a book by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. The book is a biographical depiction of President Ronald Reagan, including a look at his career as an actor, his marriage to Nancy Reagan, an assassination attempt during his presidency, and his eventual physical and mental decline.

In 1937, at the age of 26, Ronald Reagan moved to Los Angeles and began acting in movies. He married Jane Wyman in January 1940. They had two children: daughter Maureen, born in 1941, and adopted son, Michael, born in 1945. Wyman also gave birth to daughter Christine in 1947, but the baby died soon after her premature birth. This put an irreversible strain on Reagan and Wyman's marriage. They divorced in 1948.

In April 1942, during World War II, Reagan became a second lieutenant in the US Cavalry Officer Reserve Corps, where he was given top-secret clearance....

Concise but equally interesting experience By Helpful Advice Summary & Analysis of ‘Killing Reagan: The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency' written by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, prepared by Instaread was new opportunity to read summarized Instaread version of original book – again, I can express satisfaction with the final result, because this much shorter version will be of great help for those that did not read the original.Given how many readers are struggling with thick books, either because of not having enough time or concentration to go through, Instaread versions could be great solution how to regardless of number of pages still read such books. Though original Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard’s book have a bit less pages compared to other original books made into the Instaread editions (around 300), still for lot of people it would take lot of time to read it.As usual, Instaread book is split into the two main sections – in first one, called Summary, reader will be introduced to the plot overview and important people that appear in ‘Killing Reagan’, while the second part, called Analysis, discusses relationships between main protagonists and book themes.Though, honestly speaking it’s hard to expect this kind of page turner to be transformed into much shorter version and maintain the same level of reader involvement in story, this edition manages to deliver shortened, but still rich overview of U.S. President Ronald Reagan career, his rise to power and struggle, both mental and physical, that marked the end of his life.Same observation I had for other Instaread editions I can repeat here - I’m more than sure fairly significant number of people after reading this well-made summary will decide to read the full version of book, intrigued by the content; for others, this summarized version will be great reference, either as an introduction to the topic or as a starting point for creating a school paper or some other professional work.Overall, though I’m not considering myself the target audience for such kind of books, this is another good summary edition and if you don’t have enough time to read full book, do not hesitate to give a chance to this ‘Summary & Analysis’ edition – due to its concise style and the amount of information offered on relatively small number of pages that makes it worthwhile book to read.I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions.

If this is all you read in this summary I'm pretty sure you will learn something. However I advise you to put your feet up for a bit longer and digest some more information as Instaread delves into the character analysis and relationships of Ronald, Nancy, John Hinckley and Margaret Thatcher followed by numerous and varying themes. What are the themes of this book? Well it should come as no surprise to at least see some of the following:Raegan's Double Life * Mental Illness * Alzheimer's Disease * Control * Communism * Raegan's Persona to Voters * Conservatism * Raegan's AgeInstaread states that "the author maintains a balance of fact and story throughout the book, leaving little to the imagination of readers when it comes to the course of Raegan's personal and politcial life". Important to note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread summary and NOT the original. This summary is great for those who need a refresher or just do not have time to read the original but want to know what it is about. This is the 'nuts and bolts' without the frills. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

This is a summary and analysis of Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's "Killing Reagan" and is not the actual book. Reagan was the president just before I was born, so I didn't know much about him. I was really interested in learning more about his life because he is such a revered president. This book first summarizes what the overall book is about, analyzes the main characters and their relationships with other characters, and discusses the book's themes. The themes/topics the book discusses include, "Reagan's Double Life", "Mental Illness", "Alzheimer's Disease", "Control", "Communism", "Reagan's Persona to Voters", "Conservatism", and "Reagan's Age". I thought that this summary and analysis did a wonderful job of telling about Reagan's life. I highly recommend this summary to those who are interested in Ronald Reagan. The summary is full of interesting facts and had me engaged the entire time I was reading.

In Cuban Revelations, Marc Frank offers a first-hand account of daily life in Cuba at the turn of the 21st century, the start of a new and dramatic epoch for islanders and the Cuban diaspora.

A US-born journalist who has called Havana home for almost a quarter century, Frank observed in person the best days of the revolution, the fall of the Soviet Bloc, the great depression of the 1990s, the stepping aside of Fidel Castro, and the reforms now being devised by his brother. Examining the effects of US policy toward Cuba, Frank analyzes why Cuba has entered an extraordinary, irreversible period of change and considers what the island's future holds.

The enormous social engineering project taking place today under Raúl's leadership is fraught with many dangers, and Cuban Revelations follows the new leader's efforts to overcome bureaucratic resistance and the fears of a populace that stand in his way. In addition, Frank offers a colorful chronicle of his travels across the island's many and varied provinces, sharing candid interviews with people from all walks of life. He takes the listener outside the capital to reveal how ordinary Cubans live and what they are thinking and feeling as 50-year-old social and economic taboos are broken. He shares his honest and unbiased observations on extraordinary positive developments in social matters, like healthcare and education, as well as on the inefficiencies in the Cuban economy.

As an avid reader of all text about Cuba, this book sits firmly on the top tier, virtually alone and towering over most. You won't find ideology or an agenda in here... but rather a comprehensive composition covering the multilayered, and often quite complex, reform process that has been underway in Cuba since at least 2006. Don't worry, it's not based on gossip, speculation, or wishful or spiteful thinking. Frank is an old-school reporter. Remember those? His book is based on solid sources, first hand investigation, inside access and an understanding of Cuba that is very, very rare. From his unique position, he takes a "forest" view of U.S.-Cuba policy, while not ignoring the important "trees" that make up and explain the poisoned relationship. Refreshingly, his analysis is not from the typical U.S. perspective, nor full of Cuban rhetoric. It is more a sober, pragmatic analysis from the island side of the straits.I only caution that it may be a little too "insider" for readers with just a casual interest in Cuba, those wanting their political views to be supported or attacked, or those looking for shallow entertainment, with tales of salsa, rum and Santeria.Conversely, for anyone calling themselves a Cuba expert, consultant, or activist; all Cubans living in the U.S.; and anyone working in any way on U.S.-Cuba policy or engaging Cuba economically, this is required reading.

Top of my list By Dan W I frequently travel to Cuba for work and read just about everything I can about the country--newspaper articles, magazine essays, novels, academic works, and non-fiction books. This is the best book I have read about contemporary Cuba in a long time. In fact, colleagues heading to Cuba soon just asked me to compile a reading list for them and Marc Frank's book was at the top of my list. Frank is a seasoned journalist, nimble writer and long-time resident of Cuba. What I like most about the book is its blend of straight-ahead reporting and personal stories. Frank has the requisite detachment a journalist needs to tell a real, credible and street-level account of what's been going in Cuba over the last 20 years or more. He also has excellent sources, which make the book come alive with insights and opinions that do not often appear on the front page. The fact that Frank lives in Cuba and has an extended Cuban family give it a rich and intimate tone that makes it especially rewarding to read.

I first met Marc Frank when I served as Counselor for Economic/Political affairs for the US Interests Section in Havana from 1997-1999. We often lunched at the usually empty "El Conejo" retaurant, created back when Fidel thought that raising rabbits was the solution for the country's protein deficiency. Somehow there always seemed to be a lone Cuban sitting near us, presumably trying to listen to our conversations. Marc's analysis of events often differed from that of the US Government, but more often than not he was generally right, especially in later years,I recently returned to Cuba after a 14 year absence for three weeks of on the ground research. Again I found Marc had insights and information that no one else had. I have been reading and writing about Cuba for the last 17 years both in and out of government. This is the best single book I have read.I do agree with Dawn - a friend who I also know, but often disagree with - that this is not a book for the casual reader. It is for the careful student of Cuban affairs. As such I do not recommend the e-book edition. This is a book the specialist will want to refer to time and time again. You need to keep it on your bookshelf.Gary H. Maybarduk, PhD, FSO(r)
