Quest of the Giant J The Most Interesting Giant J Goldmine In The World Reveals: The Legendary Jesse James, Secrets Of The Knights Templar & Confederate Treasures, & The Lost Gold Mines Of The American West So my book is listed under Military History Special Forces and Intelligence/ Espionage. It covers how my Jackson/James ancestors who were Colonels and Generals created the USA's most powerful Spy network prior to creating the CIA. It tells the truth about how they built the Federal Reserve with gold from the family gold mine. The book also covers how my music was pursued by Warner Bros and how I wrote this book while simultaneously co-writing and co-producing music with Neil Young's manager/publicist who is the former Senior VP of Warner Bros Music. For the very first time the true identity of Jesse Woodson James is revealed and the multiple Jesse James theory is expanded on in detail which researchers have stumbled over for over a century. The activities of Jesse Woodson James after his faked death hoax are also revealed with a unique inside look into his connection and leadership of the secret military group Knights of the Golden Circle and the Knights Templar. The relation between General Andrew Jackson and General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson are also expanded on from another Jackson cousin's perspective linking all three paternal genealogy lines to medieval knight Sir Richard Jackson in the 1500's. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this book is the in depth analysis into the lost gold mines and mineral patents of the American west. The lost mineral patent issue details a true story of adventure and intrigue exposing judicial, county, state, and federal government corruption across the western frontier. One man with courage and unique information uncovers the biggest mortgage, title, and mineral fraud in US history that has been working in tandem with mega corporations and lobbyists for over a century to control the supply and demand of gold. This unique book is a treasure map of knowledge to help others discover their genealogical history and lost family mineral wealth that has been hidden since the days of the last gold rush over 100 years ago. Thousands of federal mineral patents were issued between 1840 and 1910 and would still be owned by the unknowing next of kin descendants today. The federal mineral patents cannot be legally assessed property taxes by the county and therefore are still sitting out there waiting for you to discover. Did your ancestors settle a federal mineral patented gold mine? As some people have pointed out this would change history and start a new gold rush! Meanwhile the value of gold has been steadily growing for decades.

The time: 1942.The place: The Japanese-occupied island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The Story: A stirring true account of a man who refused to be defeated. When the American forces in the Philippines surrendered in May, 1942, a mining engineer named Wendell Fertig chose to take his chances in the jungle. What happened to him during nearly three years far behind enemy lines is the amazing story that John Keats tells in They Fought Alone. For Fertig, with the aid of a handful of Americans who also refused to surrender, led thousands of Filipinos in a seemingly hopeless war against the Japanese. They made bullets from curtain rods; telegraph wire from iron fence. They fought off sickness, despair and rebellion within their own forces. Their homemade communications were MacArthur’s eyes and ears in the Philippines. When the Americans finally returned to Mindanao, they found Fertig virtually in control of one of the world’s largest islands, commanding an army of 35,000 men, and at the head of a civil government with its own post office, law courts, currency, factories, and hospitals.John Keats, who also served in the Philippines, has captured all the pain, brutality, and courage of this incredible drama, in which many memorable men and women play their parts. But They Fought Alone is essentially the story of one man—a testament to the ingenuity and sheer guts of an authentic American hero.“This remarkable story of guerrilla fighting in the Philippines during WWII...it is absorbing reading. . . . More remarkable still, though it contains death, torture, and desolation, it bubbles with humor.” —S. L. A. Marshall, The NY Times Book Review“A true and admirably researched account of an American hero who refused to accept defeat. His courage was incredible and his resourcefulness equally so. . . . I have read scores of books in this genre and Keats’ is one of the best.” —Chicago Tribune

Griffin's best-selling WWII fiction books were about Colonel Wendell Fertig's guerrilla campaign in the Philippines. These two books--"The Fighting Agents" and "Behind the Lines"--mix a little fact with a lot of fiction, but include some material from the John Keats book. I reread Keats to separate the fact from the fiction. I also stumbled upon a fall 2002 article on the Special Forces in "American Heritage" magazine, which mentioned Fertig's follow-up role in helping to organize the Green Berets in the 1950s--a story I did not know until reading Griffin. What a small world!Griffin knew Fertig at Fort Bragg, which is where Fertig helped found the Special Warfare School and, interestingly, where Fertig's great-grandson, Dave Hudson, wrote his review of the Keats book. Griffin stated that Fertig's lack of promotion to general-officer rank, after commanding 30,000 guerrillas--the equivalent of an Army Corps, was one of the great travesties of justice perpetrated by a jealous MacArthur staff after the war.Having known a by-then grandfatherly Colonel Fertig in the early 1960s when he was at the Colorado School of Mines, I would agree with Griffin's assessment. Wendell Fertig was one of a very select group of real heroes, not the instant, media-manufactured, post-9/11 kind.I hope Hollywood and Brad Pitt can bring Colonel Fertig some very belated, posthumous justice, although I am not optimistic based on Keats' and Griffin's lack of success. However, the two authors must be given considerable credit for keeping this remarkable story alive for 40 years from the publication of "They Fought Alone" and 60 years after the actual events so that Hollywood could finally "discover" it.

Fertig and the United States Forces in the Philippines during World War II. USFIP, as it was known, fought guerrilla warfare against the occupying Japanese forces from the surrender of American forces in the Philippines (i.e. the Bataan Death March) until GEN MacArthur's return. If you have any interest in military history and/or guerrilla warfare, this book would be of interest to you. There is presently a movie script based on this book and in talks for production for a big-screen adaptation. Incidentally, COL Wendell W. Fertig was my great-grandfather.

Vaubel John Keats' "They Fought Alone" is a wonderful book, recreating the important, yet little known (as far as I've seen), battles which occured on the island of Mindanao during WWII. It's a story of great personal bravery at a time and place when it was most needed. I only wish I could speak with my great-grandfather, Col. Charles W. Hedges (who played a fairly prominent part in the conflict and of course was the character I most enjoyed reading about), about the accuracy of Keats' book. Other than that little wish that kept popping up I found I couldn't put the book down. Keats' ability to draw the reader into that world of endless jungle and personal conflict is astounding. I recommend "They Fought Alone" to anyone interested in a great story and a lesson in the lengths that some men were willing and able to go to in the name of freedom not only for themselves, but for all those involved on Mindanao, in the Phillippines, in the Pacific Conflict and in WWII as a whole.

Ken Graves's idiosyncratic photographs capture the humour and pathos of America in the transitional era of the 1960s and 1970s. Looking in from the margins, Graves highlights the contradictions inherent in America and its culture moulded equally by idealism and decline. He simultaneously examines and dismantles those myths, and plays out the tension of the American dream against the backdrop of a gritty reality. Graves uses photography as a tool to document everyday surrealism, the improbable episodes and happy accidents which unfold before the camera. Like Garry Winogrand, Graves is concerned with building a distinct photographic language - literary in tone, and always belied by a politics of vision. In searching out public displays of Americana, Graves focuses on the simultaneity of anticipation and collision, reaching beyond the hyperreal of the fairgrounds and the holiday occasions, revealing instead the wonder, humour and strangeness of the everyday. Ken Graves was born in Oregon, US, in 1942. He is the coauthor of American Snapshots (Scrimshaw Press, 1971) with Mitchell Payne, and Ballroom with Eva Lipman (Milkweed Editions, 1989). His photographs appear in the collections of MoMA, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.

The inside is even worse: the photos are done flipbook style (turning the book sideways), with no white space border whatsoever except at the very bottom. To get even a decent look at anything and see the bottoms you have to smash the book flat in a way that will probably destroy the binding in no time, and it's still a real compromise as the images are not allowed to breathe within any space. Wait! It gets worse. There are then photos that cover both sides of the page...their effect is easily ruined by the disappearing middle. If you were able to pick up the book for 10 bucks somehow it would be well worth it because these are fantastic, amazing photos, and it's criminal and sad that their only existing availabilty is in this thoughtless, almost contemptuous presentation.

“Readers who can’t get enough of speculation about the JFK and RFK assassinations should definitely give [CIA Rogues and the Killing of the Kennedys] a read . . .”—BooklistThe US Central Intelligence Agency is no stranger to conspiracy and allegations of corruption. Across the globe, violent coups have been orchestrated, high-profile targets kidnapped, and world leaders dispatched at the hands of CIA agents. During the 1960s, on domestic soil, the methods used to protect their interests and themselves at the expense of the American people were no less ruthless. In CIA Rogues and the Killing of the Kennedys, Patrick Nolan fearlessly investigates the CIA’s involvement in the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy—why the brothers needed to die and how rogue intelligence agents orchestrated history’s most infamous conspiracy.Nolan furthers the research of leading forensic scientists, historians, and scholars who agree that serious unanswered questions remain regarding the assassinations of John F. Kennedy fifty years ago and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. He revisits and refutes what is currently known about Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Bishara Sirhan and offers readers a compelling profile of the CIA’s Richard Helms, an amoral master of clandestine operations with a chip on his shoulder.Bolstered by a foreword from Dr. Henry C. Lee, one of the world’s foremost forensic authorities, CIA Rogues and the Killing of the Kennedys is an unmatched effort in forensic research and detective work. Nolan has made a significant contribution to the literature on that fateful day in Dallas as well as shed light on that dark night at the Ambassador Hotel. Readers interested in conspiracy, the Kennedy family, or American history will find this book invaluable.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

CIA Rogues and the Killing of the Kennedys: How and Why US Agents Conspired to Assassinate JFK and RFK, by Patrick Nolan

From Booklist Serious conspiracy theorists will probably enjoy this new book, which lays the blame for the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert at the feet of CIA men Richard Helms and James Jesus Angleton (this isn’t a spoiler: the author gives the identities of the conspirators away at the very beginning of the book). Other readers might be a little, well, less than impressed. The author uses some clever tricks to persuade us to follow him down his line of reasoning, including weighting his prose with words designed to impress (“top forensic scientists,” “intrepid historians”) and dismissing some conspiracy theories (the ones that say the moon landings were faked, say, or that Elvis still lives) while positioning critics of his own theory as small-minded and unimaginative (“. . . it is very difficult for shallow people to live with the hard, cold fact that individuals within their own government conspired to assassinate their leaders”). The book uses, the author says, a mosaic theory of intelligence gathering, which involves piecing together evidence from a variety of sources to form a composite picture of the truth. In practical, literary terms, this means assembling a conglomeration of facts and suppositions and unsupported statements and gluing them together. Is the book persuasive? Absolutely. It has a sort of internal consistency that could lull the reader into accepting the author’s assertions as a reasonable facsimile of historical fact. But it’s the sort of internal consistency that, if you poke too hard at any of its central arguments, might collapse under its own speculative weight. Readers who can’t get enough of speculation about the JFK and RFK assassinations should definitely give it a read, but with a skeptical eye. --David Pitt

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Book As Far As It Goes......Mr. Nolan Just Does Not Finish Connecting The Dots By Stephen Courts I read this book in a couple of days and found it quite conclusive in as far as he goes with the MK-Ultra program. Naomi Klein first published The Shock Doctrine back in the early part of the last decade. She goes into quite some detail about a program I should have known about, but did not. H. P. Albarelli Jr. wrote a convincing book about this same program with respect to Dr. Frank Olsen's murder. The CIA used the same methods, specifically psychedelic drugs to rid themselves of a member of the inner club who suddenly developed a conscience. The government settled Dr. Olsen's family's lawsuit for I recall $750,000.00 in 1975. The alleged suicide was changed to murder, but to my knowledge not one person was charged much less convicted of this heinous crime.I am more inclined to believe Sirhan Sirhan was a victim of this same unsavory method of mind control based on both the defense and prosecution use of hypnosis that to this day has erased virtually all memory of Sirhan in regards to that tragic night in L.A. on June 5, 1968. To a lesser degree I suspect Intelligent Agent Lee H. Oswald was also a victim of this illegal method of mind control. The author spends significant time discussing both Richard Helm's and James Angleton's role in the development of of the notorious MK-Ultra mind control program. He delves deeply into both men's long intelligence careers, more than most any of the several hundred books I have read regarding the public execution of President Kennedy. My issue with the book is not what is in it. Despite others comments about "research" and using only a small number of sources compared to say James Di Eugenio's excellent book Reclaiming Parkland, the documentation of witnesses and government officials (particularly the L.A. Police Department) is extensively documented. There are numerous accounts of witnesses in both executions who were ignored or discredited by local and national agencies. In the RFK execution there is no question that the scene of the crime was tampered with and the number of bullets far exceeded the bullets in Sirhan's pistol. The fact that RFK was murdered up close from behind to his right is without question. All of the witnesses to a person stated Sirhan was always in front of RFK and could not have shot RFK in the back of the head from his position in front of RFK. The evidence that was ignored, discredited or destroyed is eye-popping.My argument with the book is it does not due justice to the conspiracy's scope. I do not believe for a second that Allen Dulles was not behind MK-Ultra program. The CIA was and continues to be a powerful, unaccountable fourth branch of government that represents the interests of the imperialists that controlled and continue to control our foreign policy. To blame these two psychopaths for both executions is not supported by the facts and research of many devoted historians who are not connected to the lame stream media. It is my opinion that both Helms and Angleton were guilty of everything Mr. Nolan points out, but they were following orders from the likes of Dulles, Kissinger, Rockefeller and the other powerful corporate interest they obey. The CIA is not a rogue agency, by definition they represent the powerful bankers, businessmen, oil billionaires and the Counsel Of Foreign Relations. They might be rogue, but so is the entire structure of the Intelligence apparatus that works for the establishment. There have been dozens of books published that indicts the CIA for hundreds of murders overseas, for Coup d'etat's, for regime change that installs puppet dictators favorable to US business interests. That the JFK & RFK murders were any different than the oversea shenanigans is not supported by serious scholars.I would recommend this book for the deep background on Helms and Angleton alone. The chapter on RFK is very convincing knowing what we now know and did not know in the late 1960's and up to the mid 1970's. The chapter on Oswald and the execution of President Kennedy is well researched, but covers ground many other researchers have previously covered. If you are unaware of programs like MK-Ultra and Operation Paperclip as well as Operation Mockingbird, it is time to get informed. I loved the quote at the end of the book attributed to President Jefferson. "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be."Stephen CourtsApril 29, 2014

But by whom? and why? Author Patrick Nolan, in his book "CIA Rogues," argues that our own CIA, used techniques developed to take out foreign enemies (think Manchurian Candidate) against not only JFK but also his brother Robert. Drugs, hypnosis and hypnotic suggestion, the cultivation of "patsies" and marginalized "pawns" were utilized, Nolan explains, and highly placed CIA leaders, some OSS veterans of World War II service, were in a position to set the stage--a chilling possibility. This book guides us through the drama of November 1963 and June 1968. You'll learn a lot, whether you favor the "lone gunman" theory or believe there was a conspiracy.

48 of 58 people found the following review helpful. Not Serious Research By Evelyn Uyemura Serious research involves the use of primary sources--FBI files, Freedom of Information requests, original news reports, and so on. That is not what is in this book. This is like a very long, very detailed college-level research paper using all secondary sources. Nearly every sentence is footnoted (backnotes, actually) but whole sections are drawn from a single book, so the notes are, for example, Melanson, p. 31, Melanson, p. 32, Melanson, p. 33. And on and on. Unfortunately, there is no simple List of Works Cited, just the notes, so you have to go back pages and pages to figure out what Melanson wrote. So, given that, what is the argument here? In a word, hypnotism. Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan, James Earl Ray, as well as the guy who shot George Wallace were all "unwittingly" (that word occurs dozens of times) hypno-programmed to be, not the murderers, but the fall guys for actual trained assassins.I actually believe that there is a better than even chance that the CIA or some other secret agency within the government may have been responsible for all 3 murders, and that Lee Harvey Oswald had ties to the CIA. And I believe that the CIA was more than willing to use mind control of whatever crazy sort they thought might work. So I am prepared to believe this author's thesis. But unfortunately, he doesn't help his case at all. There is far too much supposition, and far too many leaps from "it could have been done like this" to "as so as we see, that is what happened." Let's say Sirhan's whereabouts are unaccounted for for 3 months. Is that proof that he was being hypno-programmed by the CIA? To this author, it is.So no, this is not a well-researched book, and the support is worse than thin--it is amateurish.

A fresh look at the early Renaissance, considering Florentine and Netherlandish art as a single phenomenon, at once deeply spiritual and entirely new.Adam and Eve are driven from the Garden of Eden into a rocky landscape, their naked bodies lit by a cold sun, their gestures and expressions a study in shame and anguish.A serious man, well attired, kneels in prayer before the Virgin and Child, close enough to touch them almost, his furrowed brow setting off the saintly perfection of their features. In fifteenth-century Florence and Flanders, painters were using an arsenal of new techniques—including perspective, anatomy, and the accurate treatment of light and shade—to present traditional religious subjects with an unprecedented immediacy and emotional power. Their art was the product of a shared Christian culture, and their patrons included not only nobles and churchmen but also the middle classes of these thriving commercial centers. Shirley Neilsen Blum offers a new synthesis of this remarkable period in Western art—between the refinements of the Gothic and the classicism of the High Renaissance—when the mystical was made to seem real. In the first part of her text, Blum traces the emergence of a new naturalism in the sculpture of Claus Sluter and Donatello, and then in the painting of Van Eyck and Masaccio. In the second part, she compares scenes from the Infancy and Passion of Christ as rendered by artists from North and South. Exploring both the images themselves and the theological concepts that lie behind them, she re-creates, as far as possible, the experience of the contemporary fifteenth-century viewer. Abundantly illustrated with color plates of masterworks by Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Rogier van der Weyden, and others, this thought-provoking volume will appeal equally to general readers and students of art history.

I'm keeping it, but I don't know if I will ever use it. Maybe I can give it away. It's made nicely and came quickly, but I just don't think the effort went into choosing the different birds in it. That might just be me but no way is it above a 3 star item

It used to be: If you see a coyote, shoot it. Better yet, a bear. Best of all, perhaps? A wolf. How we've gotten from there to here, where such predators are reintroduced, protected, and in some cases revered, is the story Frank Van Nuys tells in Varmints and Victims, a thorough and enlightening look at the evolution of predator management in the American West.As controversies over predator control rage on, Varmints and Victims puts the debate into historical context, tracing the West's relationship with charismatic predators like grizzlies, wolves, and cougars from unquestioned eradication to ambivalent recovery efforts. Van Nuys offers a nuanced and balanced perspective on an often-emotional topic, exploring the intricacies of how and why attitudes toward predators have changed over the years. Focusing primarily on wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, and grizzly bears, he charts the logic and methods of management practiced by ranchers, hunters, and federal officials.Broad in scope and rich in detail, this work brings new, much-needed clarity to the complex interweaving of economics, politics, science, and culture in the formulation of ideas about predator species, and in policies directed at these creatures. In the process, we come to see how the story of predator control is in many ways the story of the American West itself, from early attempts to connect the frontier region to mainstream American life and economics to present ideas about the nature and singularity of the region.

Varmints and Victims: Predator Control in the American West, by Frank Van Nuys

Review "In this passionate and engaging survey of human-animal encounters in the American West, Frank Van Nuys tracks the process by which predatory animals went from being 'game's worst enemies' to faunal heroes and, in the process, advances our understanding the 'messiness' of the frontier experience. Claude Levi Strauss tells us that animals 'are good to think with'—Varmints and Victims shows us that they are also good to argue about."—Karen R. Jones, author of Wolf Mountains: The History of Wolves Along the Great Divide“Frank Van Nuys delivers material not readily covered by other scholars and clearly needed. Varmints and Victims provides a nuanced account of the shifting ideas among administrators and experts, dealing with the usual suspects—Leopold, the Murie brothers, and George Wright—in appropriate fashion to reach the conclusion that wildlife in the American West often served as surrogates for the much older struggle over who got to make land policy decisions. An excellent synthesis.”—Thomas Dunlap, author of Saving America’s Wildlife: Ecology and the American Mind, 1850–1990"This wide-ranging and comprehensive summary of efforts to eliminate varmints since the 19th century reveals the many causes and broader significance of a shift to thinking of predators as victims. Van Nuys reveals the constant struggle between those who assail predators as varmints and those who defend them as victims."—Christian C. Young, author of In the Absence of Predators: Conservation and Controversy on the Kaibab Plateau

About the Author Frank Van Nuys is professor of history at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and author of Americanizing the West: Immigrants, Race, and Citizenship, 1890–1930.

By lyndonbrecht This is an excellent account of the history and present status of predator control in the Western US. The book focuses primarily on wolves, grizzly bears, cougars and coyotes--mostly on wolves. It is quite well-written and informative. Some of the history is on the dull side, such as the bureaucratic infighting in federal agencies, but still important to understand to make sense of the history. The focus is also mostly on federal programs, rather than private efforts to destroy these species--that aspect is covered early as background. The book has a lot of history but it's important to realize the program is ongoing--in 2014 the agency responsible for predator control killed nearly three million animals. This has been going on for more than a century, so the total kill would be huge were anyone to total it up. The worst was when poison was widely used, because while it was highly effective, it also produced a large unintentional kill total; a carcass poisoned to kill wolves might also kill vultures, eagles, crows and any other species that feeds on carrion when available. The book chronicles some changing attitudes and slower-changing policies. It's a good if depressing case study in popular understanding leading federal agencies to change. Killing predators would a century ago have been of little public concern and those who knew about it probably in great majority would approve. That gradually changed, partly due to figures such as Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson, and also a slowly growing scientific awareness that predators were important in a healthy ecosystem. Most of the American public--the portion that is aware of nature, anyway--likely is sympathetic to the cause of wolf and cougar survival, but there remains very strong opposition in the West among rural communities, ranchers and some hunters. These latter are and probably will remain deeply suspicious of the federal government and opposed to regulations related to the environment. There's also a chronic mistrust of science in the sense that many hunters see getting rid of predators as a way to get more game to hunt--a point, innocent of scientific understanding, that has remained strong or a century. The basic point of the book is that there are differing views of how the public lands should be managed, which remains a strongly contested set of issues.I found the last two chapters to be most compelling, on the creation of the EPA and the efforts to reintroduce the grey wolf to Yellowstone and the Mexican wolf to the Southwest (there's some discussion of grizzlies and cougars with coyotes in the general background).

In 1498, when Vasco da Gama set foot in Kerala looking for Christians and spices, he unleashed a wave of political fury that would topple local powers like a house of cards. The cosmopolitan fabric of a vibrant trading society - with its Jewish and Arab merchants, Chinese pirate heroes and masterful Hindu Zamorins - was ripped apart, heralding an age of violence and bloodshed. One prince, however, emerged triumphant from this descent into chaos. Shrewdly marrying Western arms to Eastern strategy, Martanda Varma consecrated the dominion of Travancore, destined to become one of the most dutiful pillars of the British Raj. What followed was two centuries of internecine conflict in one of India's premier princely states, culminating in a dynastic feud between two sisters battling to steer the fortunes of their house on the eve of Independence. Manu S. Pillai's retelling of this sprawling saga focuses on the remarkable life and work of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, the last - and forgotten - queen of the House of Travancore. The supporting cast includes the flamboyant painter Raja Ravi Varma and his wrathful wife, scheming matriarchs of 'violent, profligate and sordid' character, wife-swapping court favourites, vigilant English agents, quarrelling consorts and lustful kings. Extensively researched and vividly rendered, The Ivory Throne conjures up a dramatic world of political intrigues and factions, black magic and conspiracies, crafty ceremonies and splendorous temple treasures, all harnessed in a tragic contest for power and authority in the age of empire.

By Lakshmi Ambady When I picked up the book at a Literature Festival, I knew for a fact that this is going to be magnificent. A few days into reading, and I knew I wasn’t wrong. I was hooked onto it. The effect the writing had on me was almost immediate. Every time I opened the book to read it, the characters came out alive. I grew so fond of the characters, that I had them on my mind even after I closed the book. That, in all probability is the power of portrayal. After the actual event in history nearly 100 years ago, life has once again been bequeathed to them through the book. These individuals now hold a very distinctive place in my heart, especially the protagonist- Queen Sethu Lakshmi Bayi. Effortlessly, I was able to make a personal connection with the writing and without a doubt, every other reader would too. The effort that has been put into the book is incredible and nearly unimaginable. 6 years of massive research and here is an outcome that is so majestic. The book promises to leave you educated on the history of Kerala while making sure it holds your interest till the end. This beautiful and engaging rendering of the story of the Queens of Travancore is a must-read and I highly recommend it!

“Superbly entertaining.”―S. C. Gwynne, best-selling author of Empire of the Summer Moon

October 1864. The confederate ironclad CSS Albemarle had sunk two federal warships and damaged seven others, taking control of the Roanoke River and threatening the Union blockade. Twenty-one-year-old navy lieutenant William Barker Cushing hatched a daring plan: to attack the fearsome warship with a few dozen men in two small wooden boats. What followed, the close-range torpedoing of the Albemarle and Cushing’s harrowing two-day escape downriver from vengeful Rebel posses, is one of the most dramatic individual exploits in American military history.

Theodore Roosevelt said that Cushing “comes next to Farragut on the hero roll of American naval history,” but most have never heard of him today. Tossed out of the Naval Academy for “buffoonery,” Cushing proved himself a prodigy in behind-the-lines warfare. Given command of a small union ship, he performed daring, near-suicidal raids, “cutting out” confederate ships and thwarting blockade runners. With higher commands and larger ships, Cushing’s exploits grow bolder, culminating in the sinking of the Albemarle.

A thrilling narrative biography, steeped in the tactics, weaponry, and battle techniques of the Union Navy, Commander Will Cushing brings to life a compelling yet flawed figure. Along with his three brothers, including one who fell at Gettysburg, Cushing served with bravery and heroism. But he was irascible and complicated―a loveable rogue, prideful and impulsive, who nonetheless possessed a genius for combat.

In telling Cushing’s story, Malanowski paints a vivid, memorable portrait of the army officials, engineers, and politicians scrambling to win the war. But he also goes deeper into the psychology of the daredevil soldier―and what this heroic and tragic figure, who died before his time, can tell us about the ways we remember the glories of war.

Commander Will Cushing: Daredevil Hero of the Civil War, by Jamie Malanowski

Review “Jamie Malanowski has brought to life one of the great, little-known swashbucklers of the Civil War. A fun, exhilarating rush of a read, this is history told with the flair and panache of a great journalist.” (Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the Sea)“It’s astonishing to me that I’d never heard of such an astonishing and very American hero. Will Cushing is like a character out of fiction or the movies―charismatic trouble-maker, patriot, half-mad can-do leader of men―and Jamie Malanowski beautifully tells the ripping yarn that was his remarkable life.” (Kurt Anderson, host of Studio 360 on NPR)“Commander Will Cushing is a happy combination of one of the Civil War’s best tales and a writer whose taut, smart prose is up to the task of writing it. So much Civil War writing loses its luster in an ocean of sheer data. In Malanowski’s hands the narrative just drives forward, carrying you with it. A superbly entertaining book on a subject that, somehow, everyone else overlooked.” (S. C. Gwynne, author of Empire of the Summer Moon)“Jamie Malanowski restores Cushing to his proper place in the first rank of American naval heroes in this fast-paced, rousing biography that illuminates both Cushing the man and the hero. Gracefully written and admirably nuanced, Commander Will Cushing makes a significant contribution to the naval history of the Civil War.” (Peter Cozzens, author of Shenandoah 1862: Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign)“Jamie Malanowski’s compelling history sheds new light on Will Cushing, a major naval hero of the Civil War who, but for a technicality, would have surely received the Medal of Honor. The Cushing name reverberates through those years, with four brothers serving the North, including Alonzo, a cannoneer who fell at Gettysburg. But this story is about Will, and it’s a corker.” (Larry Smith, author of Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Winners in Their Own Words)“[G]ripping, accessible… Malanowski’s nimble prose serves the action scenes perfectly and gives Cushing’s battles the weight and presentation they deserve… [H]as the page-turning excitement of a thriller…” (Publishers Weekly, Starred review)

About the Author Jamie Malanowski has written for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and the New York Times. Author of And the War Came, about America’s six-month-long descent into war after Lincoln’s election, he lives in Briarcliff Manor, New York.

I have studied the Cushing family for over 24 years. I have read every book written about the family. In recent years, newly published books about William include passages from previously published books, in many cases- word for word. What made me give this book a rating of one star is the fact that there were so many incorrect facts. Despite the fact that the author, Malanowski acknowledges using previously published books as his sources. For example, Malanowski states that William’s father, Milton Cushing, was a judge. This is not true. William’s grandfather, Zattu Cushing was a judge. Milton studied to be a doctor, but did not finish his schooling. Another error is that Malanowski states that William’s mother name was Elizabeth. This is incorrect – it was Mary Barker Smith. For someone like Malanowski who has written for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and the New York Times, one would think that the author would have taken great strides to make sure that the information in his book was accurate. Sadly, so far this has not been the case. If anyone is interested in reading a good book on William Cushing – check out Commander William Barker Cushing, of the United States Navy authored by Eliza Mary Hatch Edwards, which was publish originally in 1898.

He was fearless and served the entire Civil War from beginning to end and later in the post Civil War US Navy. This book reads so well that I could not put it down. Finished it in 3 nights. You would not be able to believe Cushing's exploits if his actions were not so well documented. You could argue that Cushing was a prototypical Navy Seal of the 19th century. If Malanowski writes another book like this, I will be sure to read it.

A great voice brought to a remarkable character By Paul Lindstrom After having read and enjoyed thoroughly Jamie Malanowski's excellent book "And the War Came", I decided to give his biography of Will Cushing a try. I had been unfamiliar with Cushing prior to this book but found him to be a mesmerizing character. His exploits read like an action adventure screenplay but they are real. Mr Malanowski makes the adventure jump off the page and also manages to give us a flavor for what drove this remarkable man. I particularly liked the voice that the author brings to his writing. This is not a dry historical retelling. It feels from start to finish like an old friend telling you a favorite story. While I am not a Civil War junkie, I gave it as a gift to a friend who is and he enjoyed it as much as I did. Well done.

This is the second book in athe serial (following Ruth's Bonded (Ruth & Gron Book 1)), and definitely not a cliffhanger. I believe _Gron's Fated_ perfectly concludes Ruth's and Gron's love story. Book 3 (not yet published) looks like it will focus on a different h and H. The series definitely contains some major steam but is more romance than erotica, imo, fulfilling *four* of my own all-time-favorite tropes:H is not initially attracted to hH and h cannot communicate linguistically-- only physically and emotionallyH and h's romance is a 'cabin or roadside'-type (actually, in their case: a cage, cave, jungle, and tree-house!)**** (and my fourth favorite trope is a spoiler, dealing with the perfect ending)Honestly, as much as I adore(d) Ruth & Gron Book 1-- _Ruth's Bonded_ from start to finish, I had established too many wishes and expectations for Book 2 and *still* _Gron's Fated_ was even better than I was hoping (which is awesome to me)! This story provoked even more out-loud laughs from me (I totally love Ruth and her attempts to understand the Gandry matriarchy and communicate her own thoughts/feelings with Gron's previous tribe) and quite a few gasps and quick paragraph rereads as I tried to anticipate what would happen next at certain crucial points. A few times, I was pleading silently but without much hope that Ruth and Gron's story wouldn't go in a direction I just didn't want it to go . . . and then when the characters metaphorically stopped and turned around again, choosing such a better path, I was so relieved I wanted to just hug them both! And the ending! . . . their story even got a few tears from me, there. I absolutely loooooovvved the ending. So much. I reread the final chapters three times just to savor it. Really, far superior to everything I wished for.I loved _Ruth's Bonded_ . . . and _Gron's Fated_ is even better! Ruth's decisions are so admirable throughout and Gron is so consistently sweet and heartbreakingly devoted. Aww, and his and Ruth's love for each other . . . just perfect. Fated indeed! :)As much I'm looking forward to seeing Ruth and Gron again, and confirming their HEA, I felt their story concluded perfectly in this second book in this series and am now just looking forward to getting to know the H and h of Book 3.There are no characters I despise in these books or even dislike, really. Lancaster does a wonderful job, in such a succinct style, of letting the reader understand each character and find something to admire about them all while truly caring about what happens next. She's a very talented storyteller *and* writer (where so many other authors are one or the other, imo).A truly delightful escape alien romance series-- my favorite for absolute certain, now.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. "She loved her strange, furry, giant, alien man, tail and all." By S. Richards This sequel to Ruth's Bonded (Ruth's Bonded (Ruth & Gron Book 1)) was not a let down at all, and I'm so happy for that! There were some sexy parts, some funny parts (like Gron doing his version of a human smile, which looked more like all teeth and Grrr! lol), and some almost sad and even kind of scary parts to the story as well. A really well-rounded follow-up.We have Ruth adapting to the Gandry way of life and her role as a Queen, all this with a language barrier and cultural miscues and uncertainty. The only certain thing is how much Gron is dedicated to her. I mean, if you want a hero, man or alien, who is completely all about his woman, Gron is it. This alien hero is so special, and I read this today, smiling and feeling so good about him. He's it for her, she's it for him, and everybody else had better watch out and not get in the way.To me, this book/series is a bit like Planet of the Apes meets some Clan of the Cave Bear; it's so different and fun to read. A human heroine, her almost-simian hero, some sex and adventure, dual POV, and only a few small editing errors made for a sexy and absolutely sweet romance. There's to be a book 3 next year, and I'm way excited about that! New heroes looking for a Queen to bond with. Book 2 ends in such a good way: making me long for book 3 and more Gandry time, and leaving me satisfied and happy for my Gron and his Gruth, who have a special kind of love. It's alien romance that really delivers on just that.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining, BUT Incomplete By Roselynn I'm really enjoying the series, BUT am irritated that book 2 has ended in a cliff hanger. I thought this was a two book series (more fool, me) and was stunned when it didn't come to a closer. Oy! Why oh why are some many of these ebooks really a serial series?! I would have rather waited until the entire series was written...now I may be waiting for months for the next book to come out. Let us hope book 3 wraps it all up.

The characters are realistic people, if a little exaggerated, which works in fiction. This one starts a little slower than some of her other series, but I am excited to see where she takes it! Her stories do contain decent plot twists so I never knew what to expect on the next page.

I mean seriously what's not to love about Noah, he's everything I wish to find in a man. For Noah's sake, I would love to find out if Sam finally realize the treasure was there right by her.

Heartwarming story from the cover to the final page By Mocha with Linda I'm not a fan of dogs but I love Dan Walsh's books, so I immediately jumped at the chance to review his new novel, Rescuing Finley. While you shouldn't always judge a book by its cover, I can vouch for the fact that the story is as heartwarming as the outside of this novel. The initial chapters are a bit disjointed, the result of introducing the characters in their separate environments before their lives intertwined, but once the story picks up speed, the continuity smooths out and I was completely engrossed in the tale. This is a tug-at-your-heart book which will leave you smiling and even shedding a tear or two along the way. Walsh is an expert at crafting stories that warm your heart and touch your soul without being syrupy and overly sentimental. I look forward to the next two Forever Home novels, Saving Parker and Finding Riley, coming in 2016. Don't miss Rescuing Finley!Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a digital copy of this book free from Dan Walsh. I was not required to write a positive review. A jail inmate is assigned to a veteran’s service dog training program. A dog named Finley has an orphan’s life—as seen through Finley’s soulful stare. A Humane Society worker is a dog trainer & picker. You know after the action and heartache there has to be some romance coming—but—between whom? And will Finley find new love as well?“Rescuing Finley” takes an honest in-depth look at PTSD and the havoc it causes in a sufferer’s life. Dan Walsh’s theme of Hope begins to ring true. Walsh knows how to shred readers’ heartstrings in a good way. Throughout “Rescuing Finley” there is an abundance of lives changed for the better. In Walsh tradition—the ending is multi-faceted. What appears as a relationship of forgone conclusion is ramped up to a nerve-tweaking, breath-catching, standing ovation ending that this author has perfected. With my final gasp, I began ordering extra copies for family, friends, and veterans.Dan Walsh fans will hug this book like it is Finley. New readers of Walsh will have found a new author.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Not Just About Dogs By John M. Wills Rescuing Finley is a refreshing, comfortable story, one that leaves the reader with a good feeling about society and the inherent goodness in people. Chris Seger, a former Marine, lost a leg while serving his country in Afghanistan. But he suffered more than just physical pain—he developed PTSD—a condition that interferes with his ability to interact with people in a normal manner.Amy Wallace has her own troubles. Drug addiction and a few brushes with the law resulted in a prison sentence. Her behavior caused her family to reject her. Now she finds herself alone and scared in an environment that is both dangerous and potentially violent.A very special dog, Finley, has suffered his own trauma. Finley’s master, Chaz, was killed while serving in the Middle East. Chaz’s mother was watching Finley while her son was gone, and now she’s stuck with a dog she can’t control while she grieves her son’s death. It becomes too much for the woman, and she finally brings Finley to a shelter.Finley is chosen for a special prison program that trains dogs and matches them with military members suffering from PTSD. Amy becomes one of the inmate dog trainers in the program, and draws Finley as one of the dogs picked to participate. Chris accidentally discovers the dog-training program through a friend, and learns that adopting one of the dogs is possibly the answer to his PTSD problem.Rescuing Finley is a delightful story suitable for all ages. It’s a tale of despair, hope, and more importantly, redemption. What’s unique about this novel is that Dan Walsh gives Finley a voice, one that rounds out this character driven narrative. As we see the story unfold through the eyes of the dog, we come to better understand the compassion and love these animals have for their caretakers. It’s a beautiful account that will warm your heart.
