Three Duncurra Novels Note: these are the original version of these books. The inspirational versions, which have all explicit romantic content removed, are currently available in a bundle called "Forgiving Hearts". Highland Solution Laird Niall MacIan needs Lady Katherine Ruthven’s dowry to relieve his clan’s crushing debt but he has no intention of giving her his heart in the bargain. Lady Katherine must forfeit everything in exchange for a husband who does not want to be married and believes all women to be self-centered and deceitful. Can the lovely and gentle Katherine mend his heart and build a life with him or will he allow the treachery of others to destroy them? Highland Courage Her parents want a betrothal, but Mairead MacKenzie can’t get married without revealing her secret and no man will wed her once he knows. Plain in comparison to her siblings and extremely reserved, Mairead has been called “MacKenzie’s Mouse” since she was a child. No one knows the reason for her timidity and she would just as soon keep it that way. When her parents arrange a betrothal to Laird Tadhg Matheson she is horrified. She only sees one way to prevent an old secret from becoming a new scandal. Tadhg Matheson admires and respects the MacKenzies. While an alliance with them through marriage to Mairead would be in his clan’s best interest, he knows Laird MacKenzie seeks a closer alliance with another clan. When Tadhg learns of her terrible shyness and her youngest brother’s fears about her, Tadhg offers for her anyway. Secrets always have a way of revealing themselves. With Tadhg’s unconditional love, can Mairead find the strength and courage she needs to handle the consequences when they do? Highland Intrigue Lady Gillian MacLennan's clan needs a leader, but the last person on earth she wants as their laird is Fingal Maclan. She can neither forgive nor forget that his mother killed her father, and, by doing so, created Clan MacLennan’s current desperate circumstances. King David knows a weak clan, without a laird, can change quickly from a simple annoyance to a dangerous liability, and he cannot ignore the turmoil. The MacIan’s owe him a great debt, so when he makes Fingal MacIan laird of clan MacLennan and requires that he marry Lady Gillian, Fingal is in no position to refuse. In spite of the challenge, Fingal is confident he can rebuild her clan, ease her heartache and win her affection. However, just as love awakens, the power struggle takes a deadly turn. Can he protect her from the unknown long enough to uncover the plot against them? Or will all be lost, destroying the happiness they seek in each other’s arms?

On the other hand, it's worth it to just go ahead and have it all.(YES, I binge on ice cream, and eat all the cheesecake in one sitting. Why do you ask?)I love these strong, tough men, and the strong women that twine through their lives - mother's, daughters, wives, and nieces. Plus other assorted hangers-on.This author has perfected the "hidden villain" to such an extent that I spent some time expecting, in each story, to be informed that I had misunderstood. And in each case, the villains got what they had coming, and the heroine and her love lived on.The characters are members of the cast for all three stories. By the end, they tend to be quite strong, and well-defined. I enjoy that. While the story was essentially the same in each novel, the way it developed and flowed was unique, driven by the main characters.A person could get the books separately, but having them together is nice. No need to open another to move on.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed these books By Amazon Customer I enjoyed these books, how they are blended yet individual stories. I learned and loved the culture of that day. I would recommend these books for 18+ years old readers.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful stories! By Liliana Faura This collection contains three very different stories which are all very special and heart warming. You can find intrigue, compromise, awful secrets, regret. But the common bond among all three stories is the discovery of true love. Really enjoyable stories. Once you start reading them, you cannot stop!

How should Christians respond to corruption and injustice when perpetrated by governments? Ben Freeth established his credentials to write on this topic through his courageous and successful resistance to the bullying tactics employed by the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe to throw him and his family off their land, a story told in Mugabe and the White African. He now throws his net wider to ask: what response should Christians make to corruption and injustice when perpetrated by governments? Justice is a fundamental aspect of the Judeo-Christian faith. Ben explores this theme through his own experience of government oppression in Zimbabwe, and through contemporary instances where Christians have or have not stood up to be counted. He considers the Biblical injunction to obey your rulers, and examines the issues of fear and complacency: sometimes Christians are compromised by their relationship with the ruling group. What is our duty? Most Christians feel powerless. What can we actually do, as individuals, and as a group?

When Governments Stumble: Lessons from Zimbabwe's Past, Hope in Africa's Future, by Ben Freeth

Review "A must read for Christians who take Jesus at his word, believing we must be "salt" and "light" in an unjust world." -- Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town "Jesus invaded Ben's horror story with astonishing grace. He stirs us to passion, longing, and hope. May his testimony persuade many to pursue truth and justice in our own lands." -- Jackie Pullinger MBE "You are holding a prophetic book that is both profoundly disturbing and challenging. This step-by-step expose is an articulate universal call for socio-political justice that must not go unheeded. Let not Zimbabwe's extreme pain be in vain." -- Alexander F. Venter - Pastor, Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Johannesburg "Ben Freeth is a man of strong Christian faith - full of love and forgiveness for those who have brought great suffering upon him and his family. In this book, he looks at what it means to be persecuted for one's faith and the times when God calls upon the church to make a stand. It is a reminder that our faith is nothing if we are not prepared to give everything." -- Revd Nicky Gumbel, pioneer of Alpha and Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton Church in London "This book is a very courageous endeavour to bring to light the terrible injustices in Zimbabwe. It appeals to all Christian people to be faithful to what God is asking us to do: to stand for truth and not to forget justice, mercy, and faithfulness. I believe this book will be used mightily. It is a compelling read." -- General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL, Chief of the General Staff 2006-2009 "Ben Freeth raises the fundamental question of, what would Christ do in the face of gross injustice and extreme violations of human rights? His exploration of his faith, as the wellspring of his values, shows that the answer lies within the reach of us all." -- Alice Mogwe, Director, Ditshwanelo - The Botswana Centre for Human Rights "In the vehicle of a brutal dictatorship, fear is the petrol that keeps the engine going," writes Ben Freeth. He calls on the church to fulfil its Godordained role to challenge injustice and unrighteousness, and individuals to rally behind the truth so that the curtain of lies and deception that keep ruthless regimes in power can be torn down." -- Sir Ranulph Fiennes, British explorer and author "This piece of work is an excellent account of what happens when rulers fail. It is done according to the one real test of a successful ruler, namely whether that ruler succeeded or failed his or her God-given calling to uphold true justice and to protect the lives, dignity and property of his or her subordinates." -- Willie Spies, legal representative: AfriForum, South Africa "It is a long, long road, the road to justice and peace in Zimbabwe. Ben Freeth's personal story of standing up to violence and intimidation by the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe sets us a challenge - one way or another wherever we face oppression, we must all take our stand. Black and white together, we must stand for justice, and pray for peace. Love and justice must pervade our environment if we are to embrace peace." -- Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York "Standing for justice under a dictatorship is the Mount Everest of faith. When law and order are stripped away - along with your home, livelihood and possessions - you can only depend on God" -- Bear Grylls, in his Foreword "Freeth's book is timely; the church in the West sits under governments moving steadily away from Judeo-Christian principles and gradually faces the effects of persecution.' --John Richards evangelicals now

About the Author Ben Freeth is a British-born Zimbabwean farmer who successfully sued President Robert Mugabe in an international court in 2008. Since winning the suit he has been harassed and his farm burnt to the ground. His family's story was made into the most-viewed documentary of the past year, which has won several international awards.

MULLIGAN I ordered this a month ago and was dazzled enough that we ordered another as a Christmas gift for my aunt and uncle - win/win. Everyone who came to our home over the holidays would pick it up on the coffee table to flip through it, and ended up sitting down looking through it page by page. Anchorage, Alaska Photographers Daryl Pederson and Calvin Hall also guide the reader on seeing and photographing the Aurora Borealis. This is their 2nd book on the Norther Lights after 2001's Northern Lights: The Science, Myth, and Wonder of Aurora Borealis. The picture of the blue corona aurora over the Chugach Mountains was my favorite and orange red aurora near Palmer Alaska is amazing! The moonlight and rainbow colors of the aurora as a back drop over the Matanuska Glacier was unbelievable.

This book will create an even stronger longing to go up north to witness this magnificent spectacle. Every page has at least one breathtaking photo.Daryl Pederson and Calvin Hall explain the different photographs. The words are poetic, historical and scientific. They give their expertise both in viewing the aurora borealis and in photographing it, in all its forms. There is some information as to where and how the photos were taken, but it is omitted on some of the pages. The book itself makes a nice coffee table book – although it would be better if it was a hardback.

By En Trance Stunning photographs of the gorgeous nocturnal phenomena known as the Northern Lights, occurring primarily in upper Northern Hemisphere locations. Photographers Daryl Pederson and Calvin Hall have braved some of the coldest spots on earth to capture their photographs, and I give them many thanks as I'll most likely never get to these remote locations on my own! They capture nearly every color that's possible, reds, greens, purple, aqua, and even white.I like the use of illuminated tents, barns, human and animal figures, and even a strategically placed truck, so give some sense of scale, so every shot is not just of the sky. You get a sense of where you'd be standing if you were there, and you're view. The book is just large enough to be a good coffee table read, but keep in mind that a lot of the photos inside are half page size. There are a few double page spread photos and ones that take up more than one page. A highly recommended photography book or anyone interested in seeing the Aurora Borealis.

In this elegant book, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer explores the manifold ways in which the Civil War changed the United States forever. He confronts its costs, not only human (six hundred thousand men killed) and economic (beyond reckoning) but social and psychological. He touches on popular misconceptions, including some concerning Abraham Lincoln and the issue of slavery. The war in all its facets “grows in our consciousness,” arousing complex emotions and leaving “a gallery of great human images for our contemplation.”

From Library Journal "The two-time Pulitzer Prize winner here presents his opinions on how the Civil War shaped modern America," said LJ's reviewer (LJ 5/15/61). Warren is an unbiased observer and in analyzing the causes and effects of the fighting places guilt in both camps. This remains "a timely and valuable book."Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A miniature classic of historical interpretation By A Customer The noted poet and novelist Robert Penn Warren wrote several brilliant book-length essays on various subjects, including JEFFERSON DAVIS GETS HIS CITIZENSHIP BACK (which originally appeared in THE NEW YORKER) and INTEGRATION, but none better than this miniature classic of historical interpretation. In 1961, when LIFE magazine asked him for his thoughts on the centennial of the Civil War, he wrote this superb, thoughtful essay (originally subtitled "A Meditation on the Centennial"). In an extraordinarily compressed discussion, Warren notes a dizzying variety of effects that the war and the policies it brought in its wake had on American society. His two most important observations have to do with the ways that the North and the South used the war as alibis. For the victorious North, the war was a "treasury of virtue" that excused generations of corruption, short-sighted public policy, and neglect of national interests; after all, we won the war and freed the slaves. For the defeated South, the war was "the great alibi" that excused every failure to grapple with a region's pressing social and economic problems. Warren never wrote better than in these eloquent pages; this book should be required reading for anyone interested in the Civil War in particular or American history in general. Its reappearance, with a fine introduction by Howard Jones (author of MUTINY ON THE AMISTAD and other excellent histories of the Civil War era), is cause for celebration. -- Richard B. Bernstein, Adjunct Professor of Law, New York Law School, and Daniel M. Lyons Visiting Professor in American History, Brooklyn College/CUNY (1997-1998)

But there's more here than most of the other spurious profundity published these days.Warren, a Kentuckian whose grandfather fought for the Confederacy during that war, looks at the effects of the war on both North and South. Warren is harsh on the hypocrisy of the North and its "Treasury of Virtue" as he calls it. But he is no Lost Causer; he is equally harsh with the South, with its "Great Alibi." And Warren is scathing with those racists who believed(and still believe)themselves to be the legatees of Jefferson Davis or Robert E. Lee. An essential book.

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Good writing is always in style By James W. Durney As the centennial of the Civil War approached Life magazine asked Robert Penn Warren to write an essay on the impact the war had on America. Warren, a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award and numerous other prizes accepted. This small book is the essay he wrote in 1961. While Warren never considered himself a historian, he had a lifelong love of history and published a biography on John Brown. His grandfather, who fought for the South while believing in Union, told him about the Civil War and instilled in him a love of history. This essay is as fresh and new today as it was in 1961. Warren's thoughts on the war, what he calls "The Great Alibi" and the "Treasury of Virtue" are still accurate. This is one of the great essays on the American Civil War, the impact on American history and how it affects us today. The style of writing is interesting, intelligent and very easy to read. You will quickly be caught up in the logic even as you identify current positions and come to understand their historic importance.

Excerpt from Early Eastern Christianity: St. Margaret's Lectures 1904 on the Syriac-Speaking Church"Early Eastern Christianity," the tide which I have given to these six Lectures, may possibly be held to be a misleading name. My Lectures are an attempt to sketch the leading characteristics of the ancient Church of Edessa and the Euphrates Valley from the earliest times to the Council of Chalcedon. The "Eastern Church" in popular usage generally means something geographically wider. We think of Greeks and of Russians, of Alexandria and Constantinople. But compared with the Church about which I have written these names belong to the West, to the great Church within the Roman Empire. It is the unique distinction of the Church of the Euphrates Valley, that alone among the developments of Christianity in the ante-Nicene age it had some of its roots in a realm outside the Roman Empire, and that the language of its learning and its aspirations was a tongue akin to that of Palestine.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First gaining notoriety as the shoe city, Brockton grew and flourished toward the end of the 19th century. As the halcyon days of the shoe industry waned, however, Brockton experienced many changes. After World War II, major residential development took place in the form of affordable single-family homes, and four new junior high schools and (eventually) a new high school were built. Housing for senior citizens and low-income residents was constructed, and new commercial buildings replaced those from a bygone era. Today, the city is still transforming as former shoe factories and commercial blocks are preserved and rehabilitated into new usagewhether residential, commercial, or industrial. Once a one-industry town, Brockton today is diverse in its industry and its people as it continues to be the City of Champions.

Review Title: Brockton profiled in pictures in new book by city historical society presidentAuthor: Erik PotterPublisher: Enterprise NewsDate: 7/10/2010James Benson spent the past 14 months culling through thousands of historical photos of Brockton, looking for the best ones to illustrate life in the city from the 1860s to the 1960s.Ultimately, he pared it down to 240 images that have gone into a new book, "Brockton," part of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series.Benson, the president of the Brockton Historical Society, has written four books for Arcadia, a leading publisher of local history books. This is his second about Brockton."In a lot of cases there were pictures that I guarantee no one who is alive today has seen, other than the person who gave them to me," Benson said. The images come from private collections, the Brockton Historical Society and the Stanley Bauman Collection at Stonehill College. The 128-page book provides a broad overview of Brockton's history, including sections covering its beginnings as North Bridgewater, up through its "Boots and Shoes" industrial years, and a section covering the famous people and places in town.Benson, a historian, believes it's important to preserve and remember the past."First and foremost, it gives everyone, whether they've been a lifelong (Brockton) resident or just moved here, a sense of place," Benson said. "People move a lot nowadays; they don't tend to stay in one place. (This book) shows what the city was."The Brockton Historical Society will be holding a joint event Friday night, celebrating its 40th anniversary as well as the release of Benson's book. The celebration will be at 6 p.m. at The Shaw's Center, 1 Feinberg Way in Brockton. Tickets are $35 and available at several area locations, including the historical society, First Lutheran Church and the Metro South Chamber of Commerce.Copies of the book will be available for purchase for a discounted price of $19.99. Full retail is $21.99. Copies will also be available at the historical society.

About the Author James Benson, a lifelong resident of the Brockton area and author of six books with Arcadia Publishing, has drawn on several sources to bring readers a sense of Brockton in more modern times. Many of the images in this book are from the Stanley A. Bauman Photograph Collection at Stonehill College.

My Father was a shoe designer and most family members worked in the shoe industry in Brockton in one way or another. The people I remember from Brockton were an industrious, hardworking cultural mix. this is a great portrayal!

No clutter of photos "crammed" onto one page. Gives you so much of a tour that you you "feel" like you have been there, as though you have walked (or "are walking"?) those very streets yourself. Not overly filled with narrative. As part of a series called "Images of America," this book's flood of photos definitely fulfills my expectations to see images with very little narrative. Fact-filled, detailed captions. This author writes the most information with the least words. Outstanding to see and read! The author compiled photos that show the culture, various parts of the city (streets, well-known landmarks, churchs, businesses, and the people) including various shoe factories that helped make Brockton the "shoe capital" of the world - allegedly they made more shoes in that city than in any other city in the world. y district , some of society's behavior, and some of the same streets or angles many years apart. Most of the photos are the early 1900s. (I estimate the majority age from the World War I years, plus or minus 10-12 years.)Genealogists can really enjoy this book, whether to glean photos or factual tidbits, or to travel vicariously to the site.I definitely recommend this book.

I liked how the writer described the life of the gladiators and the process of guerrilla warfare developed by Spartacus and his slave army. Also I loved the brief biographies of the main characters Oenomaus, Crixus and Spartacus and where he talks about their role in the war.

Pearls on a String presents the arts of historical Islamic cultures by focusing on specific people and relationships among cultural tastemakers, especially painters, calligraphers, poets, and their patrons. Through a series of chapters, the book spotlights certain historical moments from across the Islamic world. Each chapter pivots around patrons and their social networks. These independent sections allow different voices and perspectives to emerge, enabling the reader to see that Islamic societies are not monolithic but made up of a tapestry of individuals with distinct and varying views. Pearls on a String pays particular attention to individuals from different sectors of society, giving voice to anonymous artists and translators, merchants, and women of the harem. Islamic historical sources reinforce the book's themes of writing in Islamic societies, artistic patronage, biographical traditions, and human connectivity.

Pearls on a String: the epitome of beauty and fine scholarship By Merrily Baird In May 2013, the National Endowment for the Humanities made a gift to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore that would help underwrite an exhibition drawn in part from its collection of Islamic art and manuscripts. The fruit of that investment can now be seen by a wide audience via a catalogue of exceptional beauty and expert scholarship. Titled "Pearls on a String: Artists, Patrons, and Poets at the Great Islamic Courts," this catalogue accompanies a show that opened at the Walters in November 2015 and will move on to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Both the catalogue and exhibition examine Islamic courts located in a geographic sweep from China, India, and Persia westward to Syria, Egypt, Turkey, and Spain. Throughout the emphasis is on human interaction among artists, poets, and court patrons in "webs of personal relationships." Each chapter uses a somewhat different lens, but short introductory essays pull the book together, and the Walters' curatorial approach allowed contributing scholars to play to their unique strengths. Topics dealt with in individual chapters are: ladies' ivories in 10th-century Spain; art, history, and science in the 13th-14th century Mongol Empire; the 14th-century sultan of Egypt and Syria; art and literature in Herat of 15th-century Persia; 16th-century Sanskrit texts in Mughal India; late 17th-century painting in Isfahan, Persia; and an 18th-century jeweled gun from the Ottoman Empire. While the emphasis in "Pearls on a String" is on Islamic courts, multiple religious and foreign influences impacted these courts and only a portion of the art depicted in this book was created solely for religious purposes. On the literary front, as any reader of Sufi verse will know, references to worldly love and wine consumption were prominent, even if they were often metaphors for an ecstatic merging with the Divine. Readers desiring an even closer look at the patronage of one Islamic Sultan- Ibrahim Adil Shah II of Bijapur in India--can find it in "The Visual World of Muslim India: The Art, Culture and Society of the Deccan in the Early Modern Era." Readers desiring a fictional account, meanwhile, of Ottoman Empire court patronage can find it in "My Name is Red" by the Turkish Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fresh perspective and fascinating insight into historic Islamic cultures - a must read! By R. Goldberg This exceptional collection of scholarly texts is a comprehensive overview of Islamic cultures and the persons who created and commissioned the objects that continue to tell stories across time. The book takes a nuanced approach by looking at Islamic history through a biographical lens. Reading the texts and becoming acquainted with the historical characters and their networks, readers will gain a novel perspective on the moments in time, that together, form the richly diverse and culturally vibrant history of the Islamic world. Students and scholars, as well as anyone with a curiosity or interest in Islamic art will find the essays in "Pearls on a String" a fascinating read.

Excerpt from The Letters of Madame De Sevigne to Her Daughter and FriendsThe Editress has set forth so fully, in the introductory sketch of Madame de Sevigné's Life and Times, her object in offering this book to the American public, that any further prologue may seem superfluous; yet there are one or two things to be said which seem to find their most proper expression in a Preface. Since the date of the first edition, the changes in the manners and feelings of the time have been rapid and continuous; and they have operated in a twofold manner. In the first place, we have become as a nation more thoroughly acquainted with French literature, and better able to appreciate that world of the past in which the great letter-writer lived. Madame de Sevigné was a woman who lived in and for others, - for her daughter, her friends, and, at a greater distance, for the brilliant circle of distinguished men and women of which she herself was so important a figure. Her letters are made up of incident, of meetings, of conversations: they are full of references to the topics then uppermost; they draw half their charm from the personality of the writer. Literature of this sort cannot stand alone. To enjoy it to the full we must know with some minuteness the history of the times in which it was written, and of the people to whom it was written. The knowledge of these things is now spreading wider every year, as we become familiar, through originals or translations, with the masterpieces of foreign languages. For instance, probably the best French sketch of Madame de Sevigne is from the pen of M. Sainte-Beuve, the great critic whom Mr. Arnold acknowledges for his master.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The book of Revelation has been a source of continual fascination for nearly two thousand years. Concepts such as the Lamb of God, the Four Horsemen, the Seventh Seal, the Beasts and Antichrist, the Whore of Babylon, Armageddon, the Millennium, the Last Judgement, the New Jerusalem, and the ubiquitous angels of the Apocalypse have captured the popular imagination. One can hardly open a newspaper or click on a news site without reading about impending financial or climate-change Armageddon, while the concept of the Four Horsemen pervades popular music, gaming, and satire. Yet few people know much about either the basic meaning or original context of these concepts or the multiplicity of different ways in which they have been interpreted by visual artists in particular. The visual history of this most widely illustrated of all the biblical books deserves greater attention. This book fills these gaps in a striking and original way by means of ten concise thematic chapters which explain the origins of these concepts from the book of Revelation in an accessible way. These explanations are augmented and developed via a carefully selected sample of the ways in which the concepts have been treated by artists through the centuries. The 120 visual examples are drawn from a wide range of time periods and media including the ninth-century Trier Apocalypse, thirteenth-century Anglo-Norman Apocalypse Manuscripts such as the Lambeth and Trinity Apocalypses, the fourteenth-century Angers Apocalypse Tapestry, fifteenth-century Apocalypse altarpieces by Van Eyck and Memling, Dürer and Cranach's sixteenth-century Apocalypse woodcuts, and more recently a range of works by William Blake, J.M.W. Turner, Max Beckmann, as well as film posters and film stills, cartoons, and children's book illustrations. The final chapter demonstrates the continuing resonance of all the themes in contemporary religious, political, and popular thinking, while throughout the book a contrast will be drawn between those readers of Revelation who have seen it in terms of earthly revolutions in the here and now, and those who have adopted a more spiritual, other-worldly approach.

Picturing the Apocalypse: The Book of Revelation in the Arts over Two Millennia, by Natasha O'Hear, Anthony O'Hear

Review ''The Apocalypse is the glorious conclusion to the story of our redemption, or the moment when the Bible soars off into sci-fi: take your pick. The O'Hears, father and daughter, trace the extraordinary imaginative impact of the last book of the Bible on visual artists. While exploring the dynamic power of this final book of Scripture they take us on an exciting journey, from Dürer to D. H. Lawrence and from Memling to Ingmar Bergman. Apocalypse is a text which yields so many interpretations that it is bound to be puzzling, but this gentle, artistic book is a tribute to the visionary of Patmos' abiding power to inspire.'' --A.N. Wilson

"Revelation, the Bible's one visionary book, is often dismissed either as a fantasy for fundamentalists or as a literary and theological aberration. In this erudite and endlessly fascinating book, Natasha and Anthony O'Hear show that it is in fact one of the great books of the world, a rich source of imagery, metaphor, and moral insight that has inspired artists and thinkers of every age; and should inspire everybody with its message of gentle resistance to malign power." --Bryan Appleyard

"Natasha and Anthony O'Hear are to be congratulated for their book on Revelation, which takes as its starting point its central theme -- its visionary claim. It offers a very necessary reminder that the visual character of this remarkable text can often be best communicated through art, music, and poetry, which they illustrate so well. Not only does it introduce us to the ways in which this apocalyptic text has stimulated some of the most dramatic and inspired paintings down the centuries, but it also helps us get some sense of why this book has grasped the imagination of readers past and present. It is based on the best modern scholarship and presents Revelation to the general reader, primarily through the riches of the art it has inspired. Readers will find much here to treasure which will stimulate further reflection." --Professor Christopher Rowland, Dean Ireland's Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture, 1991-2014

"This study of the Book of Revelation in the Arts over two millennium is a true blast to the modern mind and imagination." --Northern Echo

"Natasha and Anthony O'Hear, a father and daughter team of theologian and philosopher, both fascinated by artistic achievement, [provide] a clear diagram of Revelation's contents; it's worth keeping a bookmark there to keep a handle on John's programme . . . Like the Book of Revelation itself, you don't have to read this study in a linear fashion: you could pick out your favourite artist, composer or novelist from the index, and see how successive episodes of the vision have fired them." --Times

"Deliciously prescient and yet extraordinarily civilised . . . father and daughter team Anthony and Natasha O'Hear really get to grips with all things apocalyptic by dint of applying a beautifully polished magnifying glass to the world's ur-apocalyptic text, Revelation . . . The O'Hears are scrupulously fair-minded and reasonable. They are inclusive. They are erudite (a healthy sprinkling of 'eschatons' 'macro-narratives' litters the text) but never intimidating . . . They are kind. They are measured. And this is what makes Picturing the Apocalypse such an engrossing, delightful and ultimately uplifting read . . . Perhaps if one lesson alone might be learned from the O'Hears' thoughtful and thought-provoking enterprise, it's that beauty (and, by extension, art), while in some senses perfectly defenceless, can never fail to bring us closer to the sublime." --Spectator, Nicola Barker

"Natasha and Anthony O'Hear have produced a fascinating book on how the Apocalypse or the Book of Revelation has figured in the Arts for 2,000 years." --The Church of England Newspaper
