5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great product! By Birdman I have bought about 30 guitar books over the years and quickly have grown frustrated with each one. Joseph's books are different. I think the main differentiator is that it is very practical and stylistically diverse. While you can immediately tell the teaching experience that went into writing this book, it stays engaging throughout. The examples are very relevant and fun to play and progressing through music history is probably the only way to go. One word of caution: You will still need to work through the material. I always find it hard to not get sidetracked and to all of a sudden get interested in another aspect of guitar playing. If you stick with it, though, I am sure you will be rewarded with great musical progress.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. it's like having a teacher with you By Dale Petersen There are a lot of guitar books that seem to teach the same things, not this one. Rock Rhythm really focuses on getting you to 'rock out' and learn something along the way. It's really taught me about rhythm and timing. It's inspired me to create new sounding riffs. Then it moves onto common chords used in rock and how to use them. The book is written in 'plain English' and simple way, it's like having a teacher with you, Highly recommended.

Heroic Vision offers parallel and intertwined accounts of politics and fine art at the time of the American Revolution and national founding. Art stories illuminate the character, depth, and tenacity of revolutionary political ideals unleashed in the 1760s and 1770s, and then consolidated in the  1780s and 1790s; political change, in turn, suggests how and why art shifted from English vernaculars to mature New World foundations.Professor Olton's narrative moves seamlessly between art and politics, allowing each to propel the other.

Walker Professor Olton has not only presented us with a fresh, lively and elegantly written account of the founding of the American Republic; he's also harnessed the magic of digital technology to enable us to listen to the music, view the artistry and admire the architecture that accompanied that glorious upheaval so long ago. Moreover, he knows how to tell the story of the event. None of the dreary pedantics that stifle academic literature. This book is accessible and buoyed by prose that enlivens events and transports the reader. This is intelligent history at its best, summoning knowledge and insights, illuminating the arts and their impact, but never losing its way. I haven't had so much fun in years. Why didn't they have books like this when I was in school? It surely would have made studying history a lot more interesting and enjoyable.

Recognizing trouble in the land, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood against the darkness. “Only when it’s dark enough can you see the stars,” King said.

An assassin cut short King’s life before his dream of equality could be fully realized, but that didn’t stop others from picking up the torch. Among them is motivational speaker Colonel Gregg Riley. A skilled and in-demand public speaker, he provides some of the most inspiring messages for today's issues.

Riley picks up where King left off in this book of speeches, Steps to the Promised Land. He’s seen the challenges that hinder people from reaching their full potential. He’s determined to help lead us on our journey “out of the wilderness and into the promised land.”

A sought-after actor who reenacts Dr. King’s most famous speeches with amazing authenticity and feeling, Colonel Riley puts the same concern and enthusiasm in his own speeches on subjects such as police profiling, nonviolent protests, and the value of veterans. He is right on the mark with his new approaches to education, the power of choice, and fighting against inequality.

Our nation continues to grapple with the darkness. Steps to the Promised Land helps us see the light.

War, Wine and Valour: Commemorating 75 years since VE day and the end of WWII.

History in the making, experienced and survived by a courageous yet sensitive young school boy who risked life and limb to defend the principles of democracy.

This intrepid autobiography was written by Douglas Baker after having agreed, at the invitation of the Imperial War Museum, to give a series of personal interviews to tell his story, as at that time he was one of the remaining survivors of World War II.

Not another run-of-the-mill rendering of war stories, this is the story of a 16-year-old youth who began his journey to manhood when he volunteered to fight on the war front in the desert of northern Africa, as well as in Italy, against the inhumanity of Hitler's fascism.

This is a virtual pause resister with its vivid description of all manner of war, including friendships forged for life, the loyalty of comradeship on the front lines of the Battle of El Alamein, the biting sandstorms, the betrayal of cowardice, and the challenges and inspiration of the walking wounded.

Ronald Pickup, a renowned British actor, delivers a brilliant, action-packed reading for this abridged audiobook. He captures an authentic portrayal of the passion and playfulness of youth, the psychological challenges of men at bay, the terror of war and the unexpected humor, as artfully described by Douglas in his own words.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Title says a lot By Cleveland W. Gibson Before I started to read the book I spent a few minutes going through what others had written in their reviews. Some of the named people were famous in their own right so I knew at once I was in for a treat. The late Barbara Cartland and William Roach, MBE had many good things to record, and they were correct .But early on I decided this was not only a remarkable book it was also exceptional across the board. Strictly a historical book functioning as an autobiographical one, well sprinkled with diary quotes by a young man who went on to serve in three different armies. The author Dr Douglas Baker was that young man, born in England, and it was he who joined the Natal Mounted Rifles against the Nazi in the second World War.I rubbed my hands together because I loved the excitement and drama I'd seen in the cult film Zulu. Now followed plenty of action and we see soldiers bogged down by heat, illness, the small 2 pounders and all this happened whilst fighting the Nazi.Early on the author introduces the reader to his mates, soldiers who he got to know well. Some died in action. Always the words are there narrating the events of the day, the success and the failures, the heat, the routines, the punishments and the reader gets to know what makes soldiers tick. I imagine it must have been heart warming for many people to see the names of their family members kept alive in the book and their truth worth being acknowledged and never forgotten. As a writer myself, I appreciate how difficult it is to gather words together to match dates and facts , tackle grammar and to fight a war at the same time. The book brings so many aspects together and it is here Dr Douglas Baker is brilliant. I can't help but thank him for presenting to the reader such a wonderful book. Those parties who love history will find their interest stimulated by reading exploits from the past, by a keen eyed soldier who was THERE. Every piece of action is narrated in a light style and is backed up by many maps, drawings and black and white photographs. This is all compelling reading, pure nostalgia to many. But the burning question must remain of how the author managed to complete such a book. The answer simply lies with Dr Douglas Barker and his affinity to narrate well. But the author lets us know of his injuries and how he coped with them and what sparked off his interest in wounded men and other aspects of the war. We the reader learn and marvel at how after being badly injured and in hospital he managed to escape and continue the fight against the Germans while still wrapped up in bandages. The book is full of drama often with a surreal aspect about events. There is the shark attack, the aircraft shot down by the author and bars in Cairo which all add colour to the book. What is also remarkable about this book is that it opened a new chapter to the author's life. He was acutely aware what effects shrapnel had on soldiers and how they reacted under the constant pressure of war. It was enough for him to take up medicine and in it the making of a different kind of story because of the numerous books he subsequently wrote and the targets he achieved.Returning to 'War,Wine & Valour' this is one that makes reviewing a completely new and enjoyable experience.Cleveland W. Gibsonauthor

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 5 Years of War By conjunction A remarkable book. Baker has a prodigious memory, backed up by trenchant research, of events more than sixty years earlier. I find I get a much more vivid impression of war from books like this than from war films. Baker brings alive the dust, the dirt, the heat, the hard slog, the intermittent lack of food and water, the comradeship, the importance of good morale and outstanding bravery, and a helluva lot of good times on leave in Cairo, Naples etc.Baker also draws a whole series of fantastic pencil sketches (I am being metaphorical) of his mates, although that is a Tommy word, he would call them chaps. There is also a lot of interest in the question of shellshock. From Baker's description it is difficult to see how anyone could surivive the constant barrage of battle, but some did and the descriptions of what made it possible are one of the fascinating themes of this book.

A main selection of the Military Book Club and a selection of the History Book Club   With his parting words, “I shall return,” General Douglas MacArthur sealed the fate of the last American forces on Bataan. Yet one young Army Captain named Russell Volckmann refused to surrender. He disappeared into the jungles of north Luzon where he raised a Filipino army of more than 22,000 men. For the next three years he led a guerrilla war against the Japanese, killing more than 50,000 enemy soldiers. At the same time he established radio contact with MacArthur’s headquarters in Australia and directed Allied forces to key enemy positions. When General Yamashita finally surrendered, he made his initial overtures not to MacArthur, but to Volckmann.   This book establishes how Volckmann’s leadership was critical to the outcome of the war in the Philippines. His ability to synthesize the realities and potential of guerrilla warfare led to a campaign that rendered Yamashita’s forces incapable of repelling the Allied invasion. Had it not been for Volckmann, the Americans would have gone in “blind” during their counter-invasion, reducing their efforts to a trial-and-error campaign that would undoubtedly have cost more lives, materiel, and potentially stalled the pace of the entire Pacific War.   Second, this book establishes Volckmann as the progenitor of modern counterinsurgency doctrine and the true “Father” of Army Special Forces—a title that history has erroneously awarded to Colonel Aaron Bank of the European Theater of Operations. In 1950, Volckmann wrote two army field manuals: Operations Against Guerrilla Forces and Organization and Conduct of Guerrilla Warfare, though today few realize he was their author. Together, they became the US Army’s first handbooks outlining the precepts for both special warfare and counter-guerrilla operations. Taking his argument directly to the army chief of staff, Volckmann outlined the concept for Army Special Forces. At a time when US military doctrine was conventional in outlook, he marketed the ideas of guerrilla warfare as a critical force multiplier for any future conflict, ultimately securing the establishment of the Army’s first special operations unit—the 10th Special Forces Group.   Volckmann himself remains a shadowy figure in modern military history, his name absent from every major biography on MacArthur, and in much of the Army Special Forces literature. Yet as modest, even secretive, as Volckmann was during his career, it is difficult to imagine a man whose heroic initiative had more impact on World War II. This long overdue book not only chronicles the dramatic military exploits of Russell Volckmann, but analyzes how his leadership paved the way for modern special warfare doctrine.   Mike Guardia, currently an officer in the US 1st Armored Division is also author of Shadow Commander, about the career of Donald Blackburn, and an upcoming biography of Hal Moore.

American Guerrilla: The Forgotten Heroics of Russell W. Volckmann-the Man Who Escaped from Bataan, Raised a Filipino Army against the Japanese, and Became the True "Father" of Army Special Forces, by Mike Guardia

Review "Historians of the Philippine campaign have largely ignored Volckmann, focusing instead on conventional forces under MacArthur. Fortunately for Mr. Guardia, a serving Army officer, Volckmann kept a rudimentary diary for much of the period, describing how he managed to put together his "private army," one that waged arguably the most successful guerrilla campaign of the entire war. . . . Mr. Guardia argues, convincingly, that Volckmann deserves the title of 'father' of Special Forces." - The Washington TimesThis is a book anyone wanting to learn more about guerrilla warfare in the Philippines during World War II Japanese occupation should find interesting. For military history buffs and students of guerilla warfare, it's a must read. - Gun Week"...an interesting, thought-provoking and well-written read..." - Defenceweb South Africa ..."a masterful job of revealing an unknown chapter of World War II." - MilitaryCorrupttion.com"Russell W. Volckmann is one of the extraordinary men you have probably never heard of...Using official archives and drawing on contemporary accounts and interviews with Volckmann's family, Mike Guardia, a U.S. Army officer, uncovers the remarkable life and career of this most secretive of men...The revelations in this book is certain or at the very least should force a revision of our understanding of Douglas MacArthur and the Philippines campaign, as well as the evolution of post-war thinking." - Tucson Citizen

By Daniel Allen Butler When Mike Guardia signed my copy of "American Guerrilla," he quipped "I hope you don't find this too dry, Dan." Well, I can say with complete assurance that I didn't find the book the least bit dry. For his "first time out of the box," this is a happy confluence where the author's style matches remarkably well with his subject. Mike's writing is sharp, concise, and spare--even terse at times--in many ways a reflection of the focus of his book, Russell Volckmann. Volckmann was a no-nonsense sort of soldier, one who no one would have ever characterized as "colorful" (in the sense that George Patton was "colorful"), a professional whose focus was on his mission. What makes Volckmann worthy of attention, of a dedicated biography, is just what his mission was and how well he succeeded in its accomplishment.Let me make this clear from the outset: this book is MILITARY history, not a soft biography. It's going to have a strong appeal to serious military historians, particularly those with a strong interest in World War Two in the Pacific, and the development of special operations. It almost requires at least a conversant knowledge of the Pacific War, and the more the reader knows about the war in the Philippines, the better, as Guardia does not devote a great deal of time to the larger context of Volckmann's guerrilla war on Northern Luzon. Nor does he waste time and space on detailed descriptions of "settings" for the action he describes. And in a surprising way, this is a strength for this book. Guardia's devotion to using primary sources frequently allows Volckmann to speak for himself, and the terse, sparse entries in his diaries and after action reports do more to create an "atmosphere" for the war he was waging than any amount of second hand prose could accomplish. And it was an incredible war: Volckmann was one of a handful of American officers who refused to accept the surrender of United States forces in the Philippines in April 1942. Instead, Volckmann moved to the northern end of the island of Luzon, the main island of the Philippine archipelago, and began a systematic, methodical war of guerrilla resistance to the Japanese occupation. There were firefights, ambushes, betrayals, manhunts, all part of an endless succession of small-unit actions and intelligence gathering efforts that endlessly preyed on the Japanese garrisons. The military value of these operations was small, but their morale effects were incalculable, as they were a constant reminded to the Philippine people that the United States had not broken faith with them, but remained committed to their liberation. They bolstered the Filipinos' willingness to continue to resist, and aid the Americans however they could, rather than accept subjugation to the Japanese. At the same time, the intelligence gathered by Volckmann and the organization he built around was invaluable to General MacArthur, his staff, and subordinates in planning the operations meant to liberate the Philippines, and once American troops were ashore, in defeating Japanese forces in the field. The sum of Volckmann's guerrilla war was that it unquestionably hastened the Japanese capitulation in the Philippines while at the same time saved American lives.Guardia devotes the last two chapters of "American Guerrilla" to establishing his assertion that Volckmann, rather than some other U.S. Army officers who were accorded the title, deserves to be remembered as "the father of American Special Forces." I believe here he falls briefly into the snare that besets apologists for Robert McClure and Aaron Bank, who claim that same distinction for them. Each of the three men made critical contributions to development of Special Forces strategy ("what we're going to do"), tactics ("how we're going to do it"), and doctrine ("why we're doing what we're doing"), and thus none can claim sole credit. Guardia argues forcibly not to deny the credit due to McClure and Bank, but rather to assure that Volckmann be given the recognition he deserves, but which, outside of professional soldiers and dedicated military historians, has been denied him. If Guardia overstates his case, as some other reviewers assert, it can be reasonably suggested that he does so in order to at least guarantee himself a hearing over the clamor of the near-apotheosis of McClure and Bank. In particular he indirectly makes a very telling point that Volckmann's three years of actual combat experience as a guerrilla gave the doctrinal ideas which he (Volckmann) developed out of them a validity and legitimacy that McClure, who never led a unit in the field and never saw combat, lacked. There are some nits to pick with "American Guerrilla." Given the frequency of geographical references in the text, sometimes the maps do not provide enough information, and there seems to be some sort of problem with the notes in the last two chapters. Personally, I do believe that Guardia does Gen. MacArthur a disservice when he asserts that MacArthur "abandoned" the American forces in the Philippines, when in fact MacArthur was ordered out of the islands by President Roosevelt, who deceived the General into believing he would be leading a powerful relief force back to the Philippines-it wasn't until MacArthur arrived in Australia that he discovered that no such relief force existed. Nor does Guardia mention how Maj-Gen. Jonathan Wainwright was double-crossed by the Japanese into surrendering ALL of the American forces in the Philippines rather than the only those with whose command MacArthur had entrusted him.All-in-all, however, "American Guerilla" is well worth the time spent reading it. The carping of critics who have their own sentimental or professional reasons for denigrating Guardia's work can and should be ignored. Guardia has brought back into bright daylight the life and career of a genuine American hero, one who was among the handful of true innovators in modern warfare, and above all a man whose example as an officer and a leader deserve to be not simply recognized, but emulated as well. "American Guerilla" is a worthy addition to any World War Two or Special Forces library.

Important New WW2 History By Fire Chief Stan Over the last year I have read and in some cases re-read a number of books by various authors on the history of the USA in WW2.This one is among the best and it is the only one that relates this important story, the story of this relatively obscure army officer who contributed so much to the US war effort. The book which is a relatively easy read is well researched, organized, informative and very interesting. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this historic struggle.Stan Pratt

It was written about somebody by somebody who had little or no direct contact with Volkmann. One of the biggest drawbacks I found was the lack of maps pertaining to the current situation in the story. The biggest fail was two photos taken of maps from the Army museum that showed his travels. It's a photo of a map on a wall in the museum. You cant make out anything. There are two pages of maps early on in the book during the retreat towards Bataan but you have to use a magnifying glass to read the words.I was expecting something more along the lines of "They Fought Alone", the story of Col. Wendell Fertig on Mindanao. There is very little detail in this book. I am pretty sure most of it came from his diary entries. As of this posting, I've read 3/4 of the book and I am having a hard time getting back to it to finish it. I've read two other books since I put this one down.More like 2-1/2 stars.

The possibilities are endless, these are brand new characters to get to know and love. And when it’s done right this first story will do the world building we need to fall into these characters lives naturally and with an understanding of why they are and some of what makes them unique. Or why we should care about them or their situation at all, basically. In An Alpha’s Storm the first of the Water Bear Shifters series, we are given everything we need to fall into this world easily within the first chapter. There has been an epidemic within the panda shifter world, the rarest of all bear shifters. A virus has wiped out clan after clan of men, women and children. Even worse, it wasn’t a natural virus but one created by scientists specifically to wipe out the panda bear shifters forever. An enemy whose hatred is so fierce they would destroy an entire race.Four men, four panda bear shifter alphas have survived against all odds. Brett, Lance, Ben and Ace are the last members of their clans alive. They cannot stay where they can be easily found and killed by their mutual enemy. The four alphas will bond together, determined to survive and make their way into hiding in plain sight, among the humans who would destroy them if they knew of them.An Alpha’s Storm is Brett’s story. Working as part of the Coast Guard’s rescue team Brett has found a way to make a life for himself among the humans and work that requires his strength, agility and intelligence as a member of an elite rescue team. This night they are called out to find survivors of a boat capsized. Here he will meet Audrey and his life will be forever changed.Audrey is a marine biologist with an extremely chaotic and busy schedule. She simply doesn’t have the time for the annoyances of a relationship. Men get angry at the lack of time she has to offer them, jealous of her work and in the end just as she is beginning to care for them – it’s time for them to walk away because she cannot provide them with the time and attention they feel they deserve. And they aren’t totally wrong she is forced to admit. She and Brett meet again, by the fates perhaps, in a crowded bar. They move from friends, to friends with benefits rather quickly – but mainly because Audrey will accept nothing deeper. When an event happens that changes the dynamics between them, each is forced to face what life would be without the other. And what risks are a necessary part of loving someone else.I enjoyed An Alpha’s Storm very much. As the first story in the series, it quickly set the background, and introduced the main characters in a natural, easy flowing way. Brett and Audrey were a fun couple. Each leery of being hurt again, each with their own ideas of what a relationship would do to change things between them. When push comes to shove, Audrey has a decision to make. And she certainly doesn’t make it easy for Brett along the way. It’s a good solid beginning. And I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the alpha’s stories.

I love all her books. Haven't read one of her books yet that I didn't like. She takes her characters and makes you feel everything they are going through. She is so awesome that she can a character from one series and put into another series and make it work. I grade books according to 5 different things. 1.) Did the book grab me at the beginning? Yes this one did. Loved how she worked her way into the beginning of a new series of books. 2.) Was the author able to keep my attention through the whole book? Yes she did. Read it till I finished it. 3.) Are the characters well defined as to importance in the book? Yes Brett and his other friends are, as well as Aubrey is too. 5.) Is the male model on the book awesome to look at? Oh God is he. Hunky model on the book doesn't hurt. Sloane chose panda shifters for her Water Bear series. I have only read two books that I know of with Panda shifters. So with this choice Sloane did an awesome job. I predict her Panda shifters to be best sellers.Brett Smith is a Panda Shifter, which is legendary and the rarest of all the bear shifters. When tragedy leaves Brett and his buddies as the only 4 panda shifters left, they hide out in the United States Coast Guard, where they can use their abilities as shifters to save people and still keep hidden at the same time. Brett's girlfriend hurts him and he dumps her goes hunting a one night stand. Since he's used to getting what he wants he thinks finding that one night stand would be easier in a bar. Then he meets a beautiful marine biologist who sends his bear into a frenzy, he can't help falling in love. She only wants to be friends with benefits and that works until she discovers that he's been keeping shifter secrets from her, She refuses to even speak to him anymore.Aubrey Carter is a marine biologist, and she pours all her time into her job. She doesn't have time to deal with a boyfriend. She meets a handsome stranger at a bar she has gone to with her visiting friend, and finds out he is actually the Coast Guard rescue swimmer who saved her life. This stranger makes her rethink her philosophy of no boyfriend. Aubrey gets really upset when she finds out by accident that he has been keeping secrets from her. She doesn't want to ever talk to him again, but she can't seem to stay away from him. Is it possible that she still needs saving, and that he's the only one who can rescue her?Can Brett make it up to Aubrey for keeping secrets? Or is it too late? If you really want to know the answer to these questions and want to read an exceptionally good book then I suggest you read "An Alpha's Storm". I promise you will not be disappointed.

The paintings we see today in museums, galleries, churches and temples are often much altered by the centuries. Pictures can split, rot, be eaten by woodworm, warp, blister, crack, cup, flake, darken, blanch, discolor, become too translucent and disappear under a centuries-old varnish; and they can also suffer from the efforts of their owners to rectify these situations: they might be transferred, relined, ironed, abraded or repainted.Anyone writing about a work of art needs to establish at the outset how much it has changed since it was fi rst made. This act of understanding is far from easy. We need to develop a knowledge of the physical and chemical processes which have brought paintings to their current state, in the hope that we can imagine their reversal. And we have to look as much as we can, at a wide variety of paintings, so we can learn to distinguish those in a worse or better state of preservation; we have to try to understand what it is about a picture that differentiates good and bad condition. Theories of art history have been built on works which are little more than repaint and decay, and the beginner needs to be warned about the many pitfalls dug by time for the unwary. A great deal has been written about conservation and restoration, but this is the first book to approach the issue from the viewer’s standpoint, and to discuss changes in appearance that affect our understanding and appreciation of works of art. This book is highly illustrated so as to make its points extremely clear. It should appeal to anyone with an interest in art.REVIEWS “A hugely welcome publication, which sets out the knowns and unknowns of the subject in a series of lucid chapters on losses, cracking, pigments, darkening and cleaning …. Taylor’s even-handedness is exemplary.” ―Apollo “In this eloquent study, the art historian Paul Taylor demonstrates that all artworks undergo countless metamorphoses.” ―The Guardian “Beautifully written…an essential reference work for art historians and amateurs.” ―The Times Literary Supplement“Thorough and readable” ―The Art Newspaper “Best Art Book 2015”“This engrossing paperback will teach you never to look at an Old Master painting in the same way again.”Evening Standard: 24 December 2015"This excellently clear publication … is accessibly written, well-illustrated and has a comprehensive bibliography. It does not talk down to its readers. For the conservation student it is an excellent introduction."Icon News (Journal of the Institution of Conservation) March 2016

Unlike other flag books that focus on national, provincial, and state banners, their proportions, history, derivations, and the like, this book has more of a geographical slant. Nearly every page has gorgeous photographs from the countries discussed thereon, and there is general information about populations, languages, currencies used, and capital cities, as well as world maps delineating the areas treated for each chapter. Each country/region has an accompanying paragraph giving brief but interesting insight into the nation and its flag.Nearly all the flags are represented as having a ratio of approximately 1.25 : 3 even the notable square flags of Switzerland and Vatican City. Nepal and Ohio have rectangular outlines that might lead one to believe that their unusual non-quadrilateral shapes are placed on white parallelogram fields. There are more comprehensive books concentrated on flags themselves (such as *Complete Flags of the World* by DK Publishing Complete Flags of the World or *The World Encyclopedia of Flags* by Alfred Znamierowski The World Encyclopedia of Flags: The definitive guide to international flags, banners, standards and ensigns, with over 400 illustrations), but the photographs are stunning and with the country information help make this book a nice introduction to world geography.

Probably a great resource for an upper el or MS student w a country project. Printed in China, so expect plenty of typos. Not Nicole's fault, however. Her book is good. I learned quite a few new things, which is always fun to do. Well worth your while.
