Kathleen and Frank is a love story set in the glory days of the British Empire, the last decades before World War I

It is the story of Christopher Isherwood’s parents, the winsome and lively daughter of a successful wine merchant and the reticent, artistically gifted soldier-son of a country squire. They met in 1895 outside a music rehearsal in an army camp and married in 1903 after Christopher’s father returned from the Boer War. Frank was killed in an assault near Ypres in 1915; Kathleen remained a widow for the rest of her life.

Their story is told through letters and Kathleen’s diary, with connecting commentary by Isherwood. Kathleen and Frank is a family memoir, but it is also a richly detailed social history of a period of striking change― Queen Victoria’s funeral, Blériot’s flight across the English Channel, Sarah Bernhardt’s Hamlet, suffragettes, rising hemlines, the beginning of the Troubles in Ireland―the period that shaped Isherwood himself.

As a young man, Isherwood fled the tragedy that engulfed his parents’ lives and threatened his own; in Kathleen and Frank, he reweaves the tapestry of family and heritage and places himself in the pattern.

About the Author

Lisa Solomon is a studio artist that moonlights as a college professor and graphic designer. Profoundly interested in the idea of hybridization (sparked from her Happa heritage), Solomon's mixed-media works and installations revolve thematically around domesticity, craft, and triggers that may be construed as masculine and/or feminine. She is drawn to found objects tending to alter them conceptually so their meanings and original uses or intents are repurposed. She often fuses "wrong" things together--recontextualizing their original purposes, and incorporating materials that question the line between ART and CRAFT. She received her BA in art in 1995 from UC Berkeley and her MFA from Mills College in 2003. She has exhibited and works with galleries both nationally and internationally, is in numerous private and public collections, and is continually tweeking artworks in her backyard studio. She resides in Oakland, California with her husband, daughter, a three-legged cat, a cross-eyed cat, a deaf French bulldog, a pit-bull, and many, many spools of thread. She is the author of Knot Thread Stitch (Quarry Books, 2012). www.lisasolomon.com

I love that it offers so many different things to draw and gives you an opportunity to get outside your comfort zone. Lisa's drawings are so fun but really approachable. I have been using it to inspire myself to draw more, and as I mentioned above, to draw things I wouldn't normally think to draw. That's been super fun, and challenging in a way that is not daunting or labor intensive, just a little push. I also really like that you can draw right in the book, and that there's color as well to inspire you even more. Great book!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. So good! By elf girl This is such a lovely book. I've enjoyed studying the many beautiful and whimsical drawings while my nine-year-old daughter has devoured this book! She's spent hours copying and practicing drawing various lamps and tables and chairs. And then proceeded to fill her own book with tiny rooms filled with furniture. So cute! And so happy this book is inspiring her to spend more time drawing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Explore, experiment, and draw! By L. Duran There is a delightful assortment of everyday things to draw in this sketchbook. I've been toting this book around with me since I received it a few days ago, opening it up to a random page, and making a quick doodle whenever I have a few minutes. By following the author's instruction and encouragement - I'm making marks, letting the lines happen, and really 'seeing' the object (on the page or in life). I'm drawing more often and definitely enjoying it more.

I would say....if you have political interest in the era (prior to 1914) and want some choice words or comments that slam the Prussian government at the time, then this book works. I wouldn't make it a requirement for a college-level class, and it's just not something you want to read for the sake of a open weekend.

Judson Walker was a 19th century writer who wrote popular histories about the frontier, including books about General George Custer and the Sioux chief Sitting Bull. Since the Battle of the Little Bighorn, George Armstrong Custer has possessed one of the most unique places in American history. Although he was a capable cavalry officer who served honorably during the Civil War, he remains one of the most instantly identifiable and famous military men in American history due to the fact he was killed during one of the country’s most well known and ignominious defeats, the Battle of Little Bighorn. At the same time, this one relatively insignificant battle during America’s Indian Wars has become one of the country’s most mythologized events and continues to fascinate Americans nearly 140 years later.   On the morning of June 25, Custer’s scouts discovered a Native American village about 15 miles away in the valley of the Little Bighorn River. Choosing to disregard his superiors’ orders to wait for a concerted effort, the grandstanding Custer intended to deliver his own decisive victory by dividing his command into three units, an extremely bold tactic when done in the face of a much larger force. Due to their belief in the inferiority of the Plains Indians, and mindful of previous Indian tactics that sought to avoid pitched battle, Custer and his men were most concerned with forcing the action and failed to understand the true nature of the situation they had entered. The Native American gathering, centered around the famous Sioux chief Sitting Bull, numbered roughly 8,000 individuals, and about 2,000 of them were warriors. Custer’s forces amounted to a mere 31 officers, 566 troopers, and 50 scouts and civilians, and they had been split into three columns in order to stop a possible retreat.   Before the battle, it is believed Custer thought he was facing a group of about 800, which was Sitting Bull’s strength in the weeks before the battle. However, the Army’s Native American scouts and civilian scouts had not adequately informed the Army of the reinforcements that arrived, and at Little Bighorn, Custer’s three-pronged attack was completely overwhelmed. How Custer met his fate, and whether there even was a Last Stand, remain subjects of debate, but what is known is that the Battle of the Little Bighorn was one of the U.S. military’s biggest debacles. All told, the 7th Cavalry suffered over 50% casualties, with over 250 men killed and over 50 wounded. The dead included Custer's brothers Boston and Thomas, his brother-in-law James Calhoun, and his nephew Henry Reed. Custer and his men were buried where they fell. A year later, Custer’s remains (or more accurately, the remains found in the spot labeled with his name) were relocated to West Point for final interment.

Walker wrote this book in 1881. That means Custer and his troops had been dead for 5 years. Mr Walker lived in Kansas after the Civil War. Angel criticises the author for his prejudice; but then the poor man did not have our highly improved attitudes and beliefs. So yes, he was, by our standards, very bigoted. He is anti-indian, anti-mexican. Did I mention that he was in the civil war which means he was alive during the war with Mexico? He may have had some reason for that racist attitude that we no longer have. Yes, we gringos and wasicuns have changed! Angel, you ought not to judge a man by standards that have developed over the past 183 years! Now let us discuss the quality of Mr. Walker's book. Is it historically accurate? That depends on what you are looking for. The career of Custer? Not so much. The Last Stand? Not so much. His "facts" he tells about the Indian wars clearly demonstrate western attitudes towards the Indians. You want accuracy about the campaigns of Custer check out the history section of Amazon. If however, you want to know what white, western America felt about the war this is about as accurate as you can get. Neither the Americans nor the Indians come out of this era as cuddly, lovable people. This was a war that had few hero's for either side. More for the Indians than the USA but?One of Angels comments really irritates me. Custer was a mean soldier! Custer was a professional soldier, fought for the USA and fought well. He didn't start the wars, he fought them and died in them for the country. Blame Bush and Obama not the soldiers who fought for us. Blame Grant and Congress for the Indian Wars. Read Custer's book on his career in the west where he says If I were an Indian I'd fight the white man to preserve the life my people have.

The author is o.e s By angel I think th author was more on the white side of it . to Listen to him call the indians derogatory names was uncalled for. Custer was a very mean soldier and killed many indians men woman children. how would you feel if someone came to your house and said to get out. would you fight to keep your house? I think most people would.

'Dunlop is engaging in her personal approach. Her obvious feminine empathy with the venerable ladies she spoke to gives her book an immediacy and intimacy.' Daily Mail'An in-depth picture of life in Britain's wartime intelligence centre...The result is fascinating, and is made all the more touching by the developing friendships between Dunlop and her interviewees.' Financial TimesThe women of Bletchley Park have a unique story to tell. Although critical to the success of the project to break the German and Japanese codes in the Second World War, their contribution has been consistently overlooked and undervalued. Through unprecedented access to surviving veterans, this book reveals how life at 'The Park' and its outstations was far removed from the glamorous existence usually portrayed. The women speak vividly of their lives in the 1930s, why they were selected to work in Britain's most secret organisation, and the challenges of re-entry into civilian life. Forbidden to talk about their vital war work, they often found it hard to adjust to the expectations of both their immediate families and society as a whole.By spending time with these fascinating female secret-keepers who are still alive today, Tessa Dunlop captures their extraordinary journeys into an adult world of war, secrecy, love and loss. Through the voices of the women themselves, this is a portrait of life at Bletchley Park beyond the celebrated code-breakers. The Bletchley Girls is the story of the women behind Britain's ability to consistently outsmart the enemy.

Fascinating but flawed By Jay Howard I applaud Tessa Dunlop for giving us this opportunity to hear the Bletchley women’s stories, so long untold – as is the case in so much written history. She has given me a fuller picture than I expected, telling not only about their time at Bletchley but giving insights into their backgrounds, how they came to be selected to work there and what happened in their lives afterwards. I hadn’t previously considered how hard it must have been for them not being able to tell family and friends what their part in the nation’s war efforts had been; everyone else had stories to tell, but not these women, forbidden to break their silence by the Official Secrets Act. It is wonderful to know that in recent years they are not only being appreciated by the general population but have themselves gained greater understanding of how vital their work was. Tessa Dunlop’s interpretations and recounting of these women’s lives is faithful to the facts and the feelings and perceptions of these women. Her prose is flowing and vivid, giving an engaging insight into other times, other circumstances. However, I have a few reservations. It was a fascinating read but I feel it is a partially missed opportunity. Certainly in the first two thirds of the book the majority of the writing is the author’s interpretation of what she was told, as I would expect from a historian. Tessa Dunlop had in-depth interviews with these women, developed a real empathy and friendships with them. However, there are only limited quotes from the women; their own words were used merely to corroborate what the author had already interpreted for us. Whilst I agree that the background information Tessa Dunlop gave us was essential to my achieving a fuller understanding of the time and the place these women had in the success story that was Bletchley’s, I would have much preferred to read more of what the women themselves had to say and draw my own conclusions. The last third of the book was much better in this regard.Another irritation for me was the constant use of the term ‘girls’; I understand why the title was chosen – that was how young women were often referred to then, and at one point Pam refers to herself and her co-workers as ‘girls’ – but that was then: Tessa Dunlop is writing in the 21st century from interviews conducted in the past few years. Would she have used ‘boys’ to refer to the men working at Blethcley? This is not a novel with a setting in the 1940s; these were young women, not girls, and I consider it an anachronism to call them ‘girls’ when writing about them now. I’m sure no disrespect was intended but that is how it appears. This was also corrected in the last third of the book.My final niggle is the presentation of this work. This is not a cheap e-book so I expected much more professional punctuation and formatting for Kindle. My mental rating is 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Just my kind of book! The publisher, demanding that the author write only about the Bletchley girls who were still living and could tell their own stories, seemed to be trying to assure warmth and human drama. But in writing about these 15 living women, author Tessa Dunlop produces more of a sociological treatise than a book about real women. The women are young and, for the most part, middle class, away from home for the first time and setting new precedents for British women as they enter the critical program of code-breaking, recording and collecting at Bletchley. The amount of secrecy under which the women agreed to join in and continue the work in progress amazes me. They didn't even know what they were going to be doing after they were recruited and screened for the jobs and they couldn't talk about it once they started. In fact, I the reader, still don't know exactly what some of them were doing except that it was a mindlessly boring matching of pluses and zeroes for many of them. The young women far outnumbered the middle-aged professors who were the brains of the outfit and there doesn't seem to have been much promiscuity at Bletchley. Even when a young woman had a fiancee on the outside who was killed in action, their story was coldly reported as if in a newspaper column.I guess an author has to make a major decision about how to tell the story of 15 different women in a single book. Does she treat each woman individually, in a separate chapter, or does she write about them consecutively according to topic? I think a great weakness of this book is that the author chose not to treat each woman individually per chapter, but told their stories by topic, such as the uniforms they wore; the great secrecy they had to maintain, their housing problems, the monotony of the work, etc. In doing so, the women rarely came to life in the book and the characters seemed composed of factual bits and pieces.

Enjoyable with reservations By Heath Ellens I was a little disappointed .The book seemed a bit disjointed, there seemed to be no flow between chapters or any build up. By the end I did not feel that I knew much more about the Bletchley girls than when I began, I was hoping for a more 'intimate " feeling through out.

W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the most influential leaders of black thought in American history. Setting out to show to the reader “the strange meaning of being black here in the dawning of the Twentieth Century,” Du Bois wrote at length about the meaning and importance of emancipation for blacks, as well as its effects. His voice also ably demonstrated views on the role of the leaders of his race.In addition to his prescient writing, Du Bois attended Harvard, becoming the first black man to earn a doctorate there. He went on to be a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University, and he also co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). His 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk remains one of the most important works about black culture, and his Black Reconstruction in America challenged the prevailing views that blacks did not participate in any meaningful way during Reconstruction.

Du Bois, in this 1896 doctoral thesis, uses primarily economic rationales to explain the United States government's lack of suppression of the African slave-trade even after outlawing it in 1808. Du Bois shows how state and federal laws written to suppress the slave trade either lacked enforcement or were eventually repealed to a point at which "the American slave-trade finally came to be carried on principally by United States capital, in United States ships, offered by United States citizens, and under the United States flag." The political efforts to suppress the slave trade are depicted as futile attempts to go against prevalent laissez-faire economic attitudes. The objective way Du Bois writes makes this survey of the American slave trade relevant and shocking, and may explain Du Bois' eventual embrace of socialism due to his focus on economic rationales and disenchantment with what is portrayed as systemic institutional promotion of slavery by a United States government more interested in laissez-faire forces than doing what was right.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Dispassionate but riveting By J. Morton Nearly half of the book that I have is made up of appendices, indicating the degree to which DuBois thoroughly, painstakingly researched this essential aspect of American history. While written by an African-American, it is all the more powerful because of the way DuBois lets the evidence speak for itself. There is no ranting or raving, not even much editorializing. Its calm, even, measured tone is remarkable, hypnotic. And the most powerful aspect of his study may be in the reader's natural tendency to apply its insights into American government as it relates to current unresolved issues, say global warming for example, or our political and/or military involvement outside our boundaries. On slavery, we were very slow to react to the issue, and did so with weak-hearted half-measures, until the national calmaity of the Civil War resolved the issue for once and for all -- but at what a risk, and what a cost! In the end, as Dubois says, it took a "fortuitous commingling of moral, political, and economic motives" to end the slave trade and slavery itself once and for all. I was so disappointed when I reached the appendices and realized that the book was over! I found it a gripping read that has fundamentally changed the way I look at America and its governmental processes.

It's history and I'm learning about things I never was taught about slavery By Diana Mangum A must read, if you are interested in what really happened...back in the days when slavery was a thriving business. We were really that backward thinking. diana

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Sweet and sexy and surprising By kim hunsberger Ella Fox is a new to me author. Having never read her before..I have to say I enjoyed this book very much.Ronan and Keely have a history. Not one based on perfect friendship but one born of pain and abuse. He gets away and for 5 years makes a life that he likes and makes him happy. But then a phone call throws him right back into the place he thought he'd left behind. Only being back makes him realize that he hadn't really let it go.Keely is doing the best she can. She's young but that never really mattered. What does matter is surviving until she can get out. When history throws them together, Ronan and Keely have to come to grips with feelings that could really complicate everything. When they both get the best gift they could've ever wish for things get even more difficult because the thing is...neither one realized this particular gift was something they wished for. This book is ultimately about starting over. It's about grabbing your boot straps and going on when you don't know where to begin. This book is about not letting circumstances and those really bad family things stand in your way of making life what you need and want it to be.I loved that Keely and Ronan were able to do that and not be warped into thinking that you are what you come from. And the ending made me smile.Reviewed for FMR Bookgrind Blog.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Family Love By dawntwounrulygirls I knew nothing about this book when it appeared on my kindle, other than it was written by Ella Fox. SO I dove in. This book is a perfect escape. A lovable male lead, a strong female, a beautiful second chance at a life they never knew could exist. It's a good day when you sit to read a book and by the time you realize you have hit the end you are all smiles. Ms. Fox has a way of writing that grabs you and takes you on a journey that you are always glad you embarked on.The love that this family has for each other is enough to challenge anyone's preconceived notions of what family means. While the love of a mother shines in two totally different ways, it shines bright none the less. The power of a soul growing inside you can make even the most messed up person know that what's right needs to be done. Lives change in an instant and love grows with a touch. From evil, emerges love, hope, redemption, family and a chance for a good life for everyone involved. Ronan and Keely were always each other's light in the s*** hole they called home, that was enough to forge a bond that years and distance could never sever. Really enjoyed it.Dawn~[...]

I was drawn in to the world of Keely & Ronan and just from the prologue I was like "dammmnnnn this is gonna be good" I read this By Abbey's 1-Click Book Blog I was so excited when I saw that this eARC had dropped on to my Kindle. From the first page, I was drawn in to the world of Keely & Ronan and just from the prologue I was like "dammmnnnn this is gonna be good"I read this book in a few hours, non stop. Whilst I really enjoyed aspects of it, I also felt like something was lacking to give it that X Factor ya know?I was intrigued to find out what happened for Ronan to leave all them years ago, however when it finally came out I was like hmm okay then. Also, 60% before we get some bow chicka wow wow, and even that was just a finger bang! Still had to wait a wee while for some full on loving ;)I freaking loved Ronan with Emma, right from the get go - so freaking swoonworthy!! and the Epilogue part - gah perfection!!Ok, so yeah - whilst i Loved the story in general, I felt it was lacking in the usual Ella Fox finesse.

Born on the morning of 24 April 1906 at 1377 Herkimer Street in New York, the intellectually gifted William Joyce had an Irish family tree to be proud of. Theirs was a family whose merits had given an entire region of Galway their name, ‘Joyce’s Country’. The family roots could be traced back to William the Conqueror’s colonisation of medieval England and the later crusades. Among Joyce’s descendants were three archbishops, three founders of the Dominican College at Louvain, several mayors of Galway, an historian, a nineteenth century poet-physician, an American revivalist preacher, and the noted author and poet James Joyce. William’s Joyce’s father, as a twenty-year old British citizen, for at the time of his birth Ireland was ruled from Westminster, had immigrated to the United States in 1888. Four years later his British citizenship lapsed through absence and he became a full American citizen. Very successful in his trade he returned to Ireland in 1909 to retire and to live in comfort. Galway County Inspector of Police was unstinting in his praise of William Joyce's father, Michael Joyce. Although his citizenship had lapsed during his stay in the United States, Michael considered himself still to be a British citizen. Not so, the Chief Constable of Lancashire informed him. Michael Joyce and his wife Gertrude were formally cautioned against the provisions of the Aliens Restriction Order (8 July 1917). Michael and his wife were now in no doubt as to their nationality and of their son, William. All three were citizens of the United States of America. At the conclusion of the Anglo-Irish Treaty (8 December 1921), when the twenty-six counties of Eire gained their independence, Michael Joyce, no doubt due to his anti-Republican sentiments, removed himself to England to dedicate himself to King and Empire. His son William, later to be hanged as a traitor, was then aged fifteen. It doesn’t say much for English justice that the British Government passed the Treason Act 1945 the day before Joyce was flown back to Britain. Although Joyce was born in the U.S, brought up in Ireland and took German nationality on 26 September 1939, he was charged with treason. The condemned Irish-American had held his fraudulently acquired British passport for just for just ten months. By no stretch of the imagination could its possession be said to be evidence of citizenship. In ordinary circumstances, anyone so charged would be possibly imprisoned, certainly deported. It is inconceivable that such a malefactor would be considered a British national and therefore subject to the British Crown for such an offence. In fact, doing so would certainly mean the guilty party being denied British nationality. A German national for seven years, Joyce held his British ‘sentence of death’ passport only from 3 September 1939 to 2 July 1940. The English elite wanted revenge but in doing so they hanged themselves and their subjects. Joyce was confined in a death cell at London’s Wandsworth Prison. Joyce was judicially murdered on 3 January 1946. The gallant Irish-American was adamant and defiant to the end. He showed no emotion when confronted by news and scenes from the concentration camps, blaming the deaths on starvation and disease caused by Allied bombing of communication lines. Again, his findings have been conceded as true.

About the Author William Joyce lives in Shreveport, Louisiana, with his lovely wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Mary Katherine and Jack. They also have a dachshund named Rose and something else named Rex. Mr. Joyce has produced two animated television shows based on his books: Rolie Polie Olie and George Shrinks. His alarmingly optimistic picture books include Dinosaur Bob and His Adventures with the Family Lazardo, Santa Calls, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, and Bently & Egg.He is currently futzing around on several books and stories that embrace the alleged healing power of heroically scaled silliness.

The parallels between England and America's destruction are unquestionable. The same method that was employed against England in the 1920's and 1930' is the same method we see today in America. Highly recommended for not only those who are interested in a more accurate understanding of the causes of WWII, but those who want to understand why America is being used up and exploited by a few globalists, Zionists, and NeoCon. Amazing how media propaganda and finance capitalism realy work, and for who's benifit.Shocking and eye opening to anyone even with a modicum of honesty.

This Could be the Real Story of WW II Powers Behind the Scenes By Ron Crier This book seems to give a view of history according to the loser of World War II. Loser not in a negative sense but, in the sense that what writer has laid out is not conventionally accepted truth but, may be the real truth. I found this book very interesting along with the British composition of English.

Bradley This is a surprising and fascinating book, less for its contents than for the style and backstory. The author was William Joyce, born in America, migrated to Ireland, British in his twenties, and servant of the Reich from 1939 and thereafter. Joyce was the infamous "Lord Haw Haw," who broadcast English language propaganda for the Nazis during World War II. He was captured by the allies in 1945 and hanged as a traitor in 1946; although technically he was an Irish citizen and not a British traitor, in spirit, since he had integrated himself de facto into English politics and life during the 1920s and 1930s, he was very much the traitor.I found two things surprising. The first was the relative youth of Joyce. I had assumed that Lord Haw Haw was an older, sedentary intellectual, but in fact he was a youthful fascist streetfighter. He was born in 1906 and became immersed in British fascist politics, specifically the British Union of Fascists, in the 1920s. He split from the BUF and formed his own splinter fascist group in the 1930s. He apparently was quite the orator, and if this text reflects his actual rhetorical gifts, then he certainly would have been formidable. That leads to the second surprise, namely the fact that Joyce seems to be a well-educated man. Again, I had a stereotype of the Fascist as an inarticulate brute, able only to hurl anti-semitic insults. Furthermore, my stereotype of the BUF was that it was a silly, stupid affair. However, when you read this book, you get the sense of a college educated man, trained in classical rhetoric and English history, strained through fascist ideology. A large section of the book is a fascist account of English history:"These Puritans, however, had drunk all too deeply of Jewish philosophy. They were not content to read the Old Testament. They must needs identify themselves with the figures in it. They called themselves by such names as "Hew-Agag-In-Pieces-Before-The-Lord". Ben Jonson was hardly exaggerating when he called his Puritans Tribulation Wholesome and Zeal-in-the- Land. Certainly the materialism of the Jews, as exposed in the Old Testament, had bitten deeply into their souls: for with all their psalms and all their hymns, they soon began to make money hand over fist. By some rather obscure process, they gradually insinuated themselves into the merchant classes, perhaps because their religion allowed them no vice except that of loving money. If their entry into the plutocracy is not easy to explain, there is no difficulty in explaining why so many merchants became Puritans. The reason was that it sounded much more dignified to protest against the Crown in defence of religious liberty than in attempted evasion of taxes."What great rhetoric with low humor, inviting the downtrodden to mock the bourgeoisie.Consider this one:"All the time, the vast masses of the people were living in needless poverty: and the main strategic purpose of the ruling classes was to keep them in contented subjection, the Conservatives by preaching sacrifice and the Liberals, in their day, by distributing pourboires instead of wages. When the Socialists made their appearance, the paramount necessity was to convert their leaders into honorary members of the ruling classes as quickly as possible; the presence in their ranks of a certain number of young men of "good family" provided both the opportunity and the illusion."Clearly, this is directed at the Labor movement, but consider the use of the word "pourboires" - meaning a "tip" or "gratuity" - who was he writing for? Would this have been understood by the lower classes? Do we expect this erudition to drip from the tongues of Brownshirts? Elsewhere he makes a reference to "yclept" - an archaic way of seeing "by name" - which was the last thing I expected to see in the writings of a street brawler/Nazi supporter. Here's another one:"Amongst the nations that demanded the right to manufacture their own goods, the German States were prominent. As the three different Zollvereine became more closely coordinated, German economic strength grew: and when Bismarck lit his famous cigar on the field of Sadowa, he was also kindling the envy of the Jewish-minded English plutocracy. When, in 1871, the German Empire was proclaimed in Versailles, the godfearing profiteers of the City of London began to suspect that a serious commercial rival had appeared. The [34] influence of Queen Victoria was entirely in favour of friendship between the two countries: and the masses of the two peoples felt a natural and instinctive friendship for each other-- a psychological kinship which not even two wars have been able to destroy. But Queen Victoria's son and heir, Edward, Prince of Wales , began, as soon as he was physically capable, the dissolute life which was destined to make him the royal client of Jewish moneylenders and place the whole of his influence at the disposal of men like Speyer and Cassel.""lit his famous cigar...."? I've never heard of that famous cigar, but now I want to know what Joyce, who I would previously have discounted as a clear lunatic, was talking about.A virtue of the book is that it does provide a window into the thinking of the German people and their leadership. To those of us who know the outcome of history, the entire Nazi period seems like lunacy and evil. At our most sympathetic, we wonder, "what were they thinking?" Did they really think they could win? Against the world?Actually, Joyce lays out a pretty good case for the internal weakness of England and its own propensity for having its food supplies cut by submarine embargo, which would have starved Britain into submission in the same way that Germany was starved into submission in World War I. We know that is not how it came out - perhaps because of American support - but was that so clear at the time? Also, Joyce describes the German case for the justice of its war against Poland, including the oppression of the German nationals in Danzig and Poland, Polish intransigence in negotiation, the double-standard of Britain and France in selling out Czechoslovakia while baiting Poland into militarization, and Poland's pre-emptive strike on German facilities.Much of this case was based on outright lies manufactured by Hitler, of course, but that doesn't make the propaganda value that these claims had in the fog of war and at the moment of the crisis. Today, we wonder how the Germans could have supported their evil government; at the time, things were not as clear because of the dark arts of propaganda. If one is interested in "alternate history" as a literary genre, this is the stuff of alternate history novels. It is eerie to think that if the Germans had won, then this book's major themes would have become the conventional wisdom of the world we might have lived in.

Life is never simple...but it can be if you trust enough By SEB I love Boomer and PPP...they are the perfect match...both of them suffering from their own form of PTSD and attempting to heal themselves while putting those around them at risk for the fallout.Pamela is protecting those dearest to her heart while trying to find some form of "normal" peace in her life, but her scars (both internal and external) are sometimes too painful to live with...while Boomer lives with guilt and the shame of not being able to protect his "brother-in-arms" as he lives his life flying by the seat of his pants. When these two broken down souls come together in their misery, it is both gut wrenching and wonderful to watch and my heart was breaking for both of them as I read this book.I love these Hellions so much and just marvel at Camaron's ability to write such serious and universal issues in her books that so many readers can relate to...while also giving us an exciting and sexy biker romance with a ton of awesome characters.A must read addition to the Hellions series as this author never disappoints and her stories stick with you for a long time!I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.***** 5 ***** "life is never simple but it can be if you trust" stars

He is one tough badass biker and a former Army Special Forces so of course that made him even hotter. He was one true alpha male and after being with Pamela off and on for awhile, he knew he wanted more from their 'relationship'.Pamela was running from her past and trying to keep a low profile. Danger was closing in on her but she knew she had to keep her secret safe. I loved seeing Boomer step in to protect her and how once he knew about her past, he wanted to keep her safe.As danger closed in on her, I loved seeing Boomer's protective side. He finds out her secret and that only pulls him more into her. It wasn't easy and I liked how their story really worked out. My only complaint was that I actually wanted more. This was a quick read and I wouldn't say it was rushed but I was so hooked into their story that I just didn't want it to end so quickly. I'm still a die hard fan of this series and I'm ready for the next book.
