What the visiting foreigner takes away from America -will always hear a fixed proportion to what he brings. “I felt instinctively," says Mr. Wells,‘ "that Boston could never possibly understand the light traveling of a philosophical carpet-beggar." He makes no secret, indeed, of his conviction that the Bostonians do not know what to forget. We find him impatient of pilgrimages to Mount Vernon and Concord and other shrines, excusing himself on the ground that the English are such a young people. This is in sharp contrast, of course, to the mood of Mr. Bryce, but it may be doubted whether any book written about us since the appearance of the “American Commonwealth” has been quite so well worthwhile. Mr. Bryce remembered everything; Mr. Wells contrives to forget everything save his consuming interest in the future of mankind upon this planet, and in America’s probable part in the shaping of that future. Divested to a wonderful degree of national prejudice, of literary preoccupation, of leisure even (for he was here only seven weeks), our visitor brought with him a very keen pair of eyes and the gift, moreover, of picturesque and effective presentation. His book is a bold, strongly drawn cartoon, in which the lines, though not always right perhaps, are at least consistent and inspiring. To the European eye, our continent is still unpopulated, despite its urban congestion. Our people are roughly prosperous, not yet consciously defeated in the economic struggle, and childishly delighted with growth –not with mere having, as some observers think, but with growing bigger and bigger. A sight in Alderman Kenna’s saloon of the base and coarse faces of those who have no ideals and yet have votes has brought vividly home to our author the alternative with us for private ownership. “If public services are to be taken out of the hands of such associations of financiers as the Standard Oil group they have to be put in the hands of politicians resting at last upon this sort of basis. Therein resides the impossibility of socialism in America-as the case for socialism is put at present." Wise socialist to see it! Is the future in America, as Mr. Wells forecasts it, hopeful or the reverse? He sees dangers in our plutocracy and in our immigration. We might stagnate like China or decay like Rome. “An illiterate, shortsighted America would be America doomed." But we are not illiterate. Our ten cent magazines are so far superior to those sold in England for six-pence that he has hopes of us. “It is these millions of readers who make the American problem, and the problem of Europe and the world today, unique and incalculable, who provide a cohesive and reasonable and pacifying medium the Old World did not know. –The Charity Organization Review, Vol. 18 [1907]

The Future in America: A Search After Realities, by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Insight and foresight meet reality By bernie This is a series of subjects mostly political or psychological that based on the past and present are projected into the near future.H. G. takes a subject such as individualism and shows how we moved from societies of the collective to America whose creed for some time has been individual self-sufficiency starting from the pioneer days. Now he argues that it is time to review the benefits o the collective, as we are no longer pioneers. What once was practical may now be considered criminal. However, he lived in a time quite different from our own and it is nigh impossible to predict that we would abolish monopolies and child labor. One of the points made is that we remember people that contributed to society or humanity but we do not remember people that just lived there life got rich and died.Predictions aside, it is interesting to get into HG's mind, which helps us to understand his other works.

Frances Housden returns with her best-selling, award-winning Chieftain series in this short novel about a young woman with a strong will and a sharp mind, and the man who has nothing to offer but his heart.

Maggie McArthur never thought she would meet her fate in a clash of swords. She may wield a sword more skilfully than a needle, but it was more luck than proficiency that led to her piercing Dhugal Robertson through the shoulder. Frightened she has killed her opponent, Maggie stays to give him aid and ensure he returns to Sgian House safely. She may be the Chieftain’s daughter, but she is perfectly capable of playing the healer for a few days until she is sure Dhugal will survive. The tender feelings he seems to inspire is nothing more than concern. After all, no suitor has ever raised her interest, so why should a penniless warrior with no clan to call his own?

Dhugal’s pride should be as wounded as his shoulder from being bested by a woman at sword play, but the sight of beautiful black hair spilling from under his opponent’s bonnet has not only distracted him from his injury, but intrigued him, body and soul.

But his attraction is doomed from the beginning. Though he could fall heart-deep for Maggie, she is the daughter of one of Scotland’s most powerful Chieftains, and Dhugal is head of a penniless, homeless clan, a clan stripped of both pride and material possessions. What father would accept the troth of such a suitor? What woman could accept the hand of a man who has nothing to offer but love?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. OMG FRANCES HOUSDEN WEAVES THAT GOLDEN PEN OF HERS WITH ANOTHER MASTERPIECE! ABSOLUTELY LOVED! By Barb Massabrook Wow!Wow! Wow! This story just swept me away and definitely touched my heart! This is the fifth book in Frances Housden wonderful acclaimed Chieftain series. Frances does it again another powerful heartfelt read! I love when true history is blended in with the authors fictional romance, to me a history junkie that's my favorite combination in my reads! Truly a beautiful tale that reader won't forget.Scotland, 1106This is a story about love at second sight....Sometime if you side with the wrong King you loose everything even though a relative as was the case with our heroe Dhugal Robertson Skene. He starts off as a broken man watching over his precious home, the Skene keep, setting traps for interlopers and scaring away potential new owners. This is how he first meets our heroine Maggie MacAuthor, The Chieftain's daughter. This lass never took up feminine ways for her status learning embroidery, sewing, dinner menus or one day becoming mistress of a castle. She can wield a sword better then most men and her father the laird taught her how to protect and take care of herself, she also doesn't wear beautiful gowns but leather trews and a short short jacket with her long beautiful hair tucked in a bonnet. This is how Dhugal first met Maggie thinking she was a lad and due to a misstep he stumbles and she actually draws first blood. When her beautiful long hair falls out of the bonnet realizing she is a lass not a lad! He only wanted to scare her away from Skene lands. He is horrified he has been fighting with a lass and more then embarrassed she bested him due to his stumble once he realized she was a lass.Maggie find herself immediately attracted to Dhugal and feels guilty for wounding him and delays her stay until he is healed. The attraction and feeling turns to love very quickly and as she is about to return to her clan shortly bit Dhugal realized Maggie's life is in danger by someone who actually works for her father the Laird MacAuthor and will do anything to protect the woman he loves even leaving Skene lands something he would never have though he would ever do. He tells this threat they are handfasted.Maggie had been men paraded before her as potential husbands all she refused she couldn't imagine falling in love and giving up her virginity until she meets Dhugal a good honest man who has lost everything but he also feels he is not good enough for Maggie not even having a home of his own. His family is spread all over Scotland to make sure they all had food in their bellies and a roof over there head. Maggie's does not care, but Dhugal will not lose his pride and be taken care or winning Skene back by Maggie's family and having the present Kings's ear and their high status. In the beginning Dhugal's ancestor the first Laird of Skene won the land by protecting the then King from a wolf attack with a sgian-dubh ( small knife), but he knows nothing that dramatic in an act of heroism is about to present itself to him. Will he leave Maggie after a year and a day as long as no issues come out of their time together? Dhugal feels he is not good enough for Maggie even though he loves her more then anything in the world. Will he leave and break her heart? Will Maggie's family and her elevated status as a Chieftain's daughter even allow such an uneven match between the two lovers? You will have to read this riveting book in a beautiful Scottish historic setting, full of adventure, action, mystery, suspense, drama, passion, love and surprises and more to find out!I loved seeing previous characters from previous books in this story too. If you are a new reader to Ms. Housden books no worries you can read as a stand alone book too. I just find it more fun and kind of like a family reunion seeing other beloved characters from her previous books in this magnificent Chieftain series. I love, love, loved this book and I can't wait and look forward to reading Chieftain's Rebel which will be released in March 2016. Also there is an excerpt in this book to get a sneak preview.I highly recommend this wonderful book "The Chieftain's Daughter" by Frances Housden another novel for the keeper shelf as far as I am concerned. Happy Reading! BM1.The Chieftain's Curse2. The Chieftain by Command3. The Cheiftain's4. Chieftain in the Making5. The Chieftain's Daughter6. Chieftain's Rebel **TBR in March 2016**

A Fabulous Story By Mrs. Helen Sibbritt I loved this one as I have the rest of the stories in this series I love Scotland and going back in time to this era the heroes are strong and so loving. This is Maggie's story the McArthur Chieftain's daughter and she can hold and use a sword better than she can a needle and thread so grab a drink of choice and sit back and enjoy her story. When Maggie gets separated from the group that she is travelling in and meets up with Dhugal Robertson although there is such a spark at their first meeting she does not realize that her life will change in such a good way she has shunned the men that her father has bought forward in the hope that she will marry but none have given her the feelings that Dhugal has.Dhugal is a broken man in his words not through his fault but that if his uncle but he is determined to get his home back and even more so now that he has met the woman that he will love forever , this is such a great story one that will have you smiling and cheering them both on as they journey through some tough times to a drama filled HEA.I highly recommend this story especially for lovers of historical romances.

Unfortunately the constant insertion of "afore" and to a slightly lesser extent "frae" , was extremely distracting. Had these two words been used in character conversations some would have been bearable . I found my mind gritting its teeth as I kept a running count. I will think twice before buying another book from this series. This was the first one of these I have purchased

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the crisis by hostages, politicians, and Iranian students *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “Carter's predecessor, whom he says he emulates -- Harry Truman -- would have landed the Marines and offered to cripple Iran's economic base. These Iranians have committed an act of war against the United States and all Carter wants to do at the moment is talk. It is time to speak with the power and the might of a first rate country instead of the wishy-washy language of diplomatic compromise.” Daniel A. Darlington’s Letter to the Editor, Denver Post On February 1, 1979, amid great fanfare, exiled cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini landed in Tehran. The return of the leader of the revolution to his home country was one of the final markers of the Iranian Revolution, a national phenomenon that had global implications. The Iranian Revolution of 1979 has been described as an epochal event, called the peak of 20th century Islamic revivalism and revitalization, and analyzed as the one key incident that continues to impact politics across Iran, the Middle East, and the even the world as a whole. As a phenomenon that led to the creation of the first modern Islamic Republic in the world, the revolution marked the victory of Islam over secular politics, and Iran quickly became the aspiring model for Islamic fundamentalists and revivalists across the globe, regardless of nationality, culture, or religious sect. When Ayatollah Khomeini was declared ruler in December 1979 and the judicial system originally modeled on that of the West was swiftly replaced by one purely based on Islamic law, much of the world was in shock that such a religiously driven revolution could succeed so quickly, especially when it had such sweeping consequences beyond the realm of religion. Furthermore, while the focus of the revolution was primarily about Islam, the revolution was also colored by disdain for the West, distaste for autocracy, and a yearning for religious and cultural identity. This point was driven home on November 4, 1979 when Iranians stormed the U.S. embassy and took dozens of Americans hostage, sparking a crisis that would last for the rest of President Jimmy Carter’s term. A few Americans escaped the embassy and hid in Tehran before being extracted (a mission that was recently adapted into the movie Argo), but for nearly 450 days, the crisis remained at the forefront of America’s daily life, and aside from an embarrassing failed rescue mission, the administration seemed uncertain over how to approach the crisis and protect the American hostages. Eventually, all of the hostages were freed on the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as president in 1981, but the Iran hostage crisis had far reaching ramifications that have lasted to this day. Most notably, formal diplomatic contact between the United States and Iran ended, and no American embassy is open in that country nearly 35 years later. For anyone born during the 1960s, the Iran Hostage Crisis marked a change in American identity both as people and a nation. Those born in earlier decades had little to no understanding of radical Islam, and those born later could not conceive of a world without it. Some would say that the crisis was ultimately a good thing, in that it ushered Ronald Reagan into the White House and thus led to the fall of Communism, while others would say that it was a harbinger of doom, a demonstration that even as one geopolitical foe declined, another was on the rise. Some say America was singled out because it was seen as too strong, others because it was seen as too weak. The bottom line is that, while no one knows what might have been done to prevent it, everyone has an idea about how it might have been ended sooner.

By Angela Wobbe We visited Cooperstown and my husband saw the book lying there, he mentioned it in the car later that he thought it would be interesting to know the beginning of Cooperstown and why it was built there, it is in a remote area, by itself, but a well kept town, beautifully kept. He thought it would take a couple of days to really go through Cooperstown, so he is really enjoying the book. Of course, you have to be a baseball town to enjoy it.

She’s longing to be loved: Lady Cara Falcot has only served one purpose to her loathsome father—to increase his power through a marriage to the future Duke of Billingsley. As such, she's built protective walls about her heart, and presents an icy facade to the world around her. Journeying home from her finishing school for the Christmas holidays, Cara's carriage is stranded during a winter storm. She’s forced to tarry at a ramshackle inn, where she immediately antagonizes another patron—William. He's avoiding his duty in favor of one last adventure: William Hargrove, the Marquess of Grafton has wanted only one thing in life—to avoid the future match his parents would have him make to a cold, duke’s daughter. He’s returning home from a blissful eight years of traveling the world to see to his responsibilities. But when a winter storm interrupts his trip and lands him at a falling-down inn, he’s forced to share company with a commanding Lady Cara who initially reminds him exactly of the woman he so desperately wants to avoid. A Christmas snowstorm ushers in the spirit of the season: At the holiday time, these two people who despise each other due to first perceptions are offered renewed beginnings and fresh starts. As this gruff stranger breaks down the walls she’s built about herself, Cara has to determine whether she can truly open her heart to trusting that any man is capable of good and that she herself is capable of love. And William has to set aside all previous thoughts he’s carried of the polished ladies like Cara, to be the man to show her that love. *** Please note, this is an approximately 48,000 word novella.

I should have read the reviews more carefully. I despised the heroine from the start. Oh poor dear, the girl is hated but again she is so awful that who would blame anybody for hating her. Of course, some of the reasons behind her behaviour are explained. Bur it would take at least a book (and not just a novella) filled with hardships to redeem her in my eyes. For those who don't remember her, Cara is Lady Larisse that horrible half sister of Jane one of the heroines in a previous book of the author. She is the one that had her sister sacked as if it was not bad enough that she was illegitimate. The hero felt just too flat. Yes this is a novella but I've read novellas with interesting characters.Maybe I was expeting better because it is Christi Caldwell. I loved for love of a duke and to love a lord. Not all her books are great but those too were particularly good. Unfortunately, her novellas have not been good at all lately.I do seriously feel cheated. 0.99 dollars is still too expensive for wasting my time.

It's easy to see why all of her books average 4-5 star ratings on Amazon when she consistently publishes high quality material that touches her readers' hearts. This book opens with William, heir to the Duke of Billingsley, on his way home after eight years of traveling through Europe and North America. While he's riding his horse, he's reminiscing about childhood memories that, while providing images of a happy family, also portray his reluctance to return and fullfill his obligation to marry his mother's god-daughter. As the winter storm worsens, he seeks shelter at a small inn. When Lady Cara is introduced, she's watching from the window of her boarding school as carriages arrive to pick up her classmates for Christmas break. We're immediately pulled into her heart-wrenching feelings as her cold, heartless father has forgotten her and no one comes to get her for the holidays. She feels like the most unloved person alive. The headmistress demands Lady Nora give her a ride home, so Cara finds herself in the carriage of the Earl of Derby. And of course, the carriage gets stuck in the snow and she seeks shelter in the same inn as William.I've read similar storylines before, but it's one that I like and Caldwell adds the extra element of Cara's character development from cold and selfish to embracing her desire to be happy, joyful and even kind. Her father has instructed her all her life to ignore anyone "beneath" her, especially servants, and it's obvious this is a role she plays and isn't part of her nature. Her memories of her father's strictures and cold neglect are heartbreaking. But William calls her out on her selfish behavior and she strives to prove him wrong. He brings out the best in her and she realizes she doesn't want to live the cold, formal existence her father has planned for her as the wife of a future duke. Does she dare to grasp the happiness William offers?I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story and read it in one sitting. There are a few minor details I had to just go with the story and suspend any disbelief, but it's worth it to allow the beauty of Cara's transformation to flow from the pages and cheer for her to embrace her softer, joyful side. William is the perfect hero: tall, strong, kind, funny and handsome. Of course she falls in love with him in a matter of days! The book is about 135 pages, so as a novella it may feel a bit rushed. But sometimes my short attention span craves more immediate gratification and I'm in the mood for a novella rather than a 300 page book. This sweet little story is totally satisfying.* Clean romance with several passionate kisses.

Ms Caldwell has delivered a well written book with characters that may not start off as lovable but by the end of the book you love them anyway. Along with the great characters, this book has drama and a bit of humor. To Wed His Christmas Lady is fairly short, perfect for those with limited time for reading. It is also a clean read, no sex scenes. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Christi Caldwell in the future. To Wed His Christmas Lady is book 7 in The Heart Of A Duke Series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

These are not your basic simple drawings, but they are not super advanced either. Great for someone who has some drawing skills, but would like to advance them. My favorite superhero tutorial was the Incredible Hulk. The guide also provides a very interesting section on how to create a superhero persona for your child. Very cool addition to the book. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who can draw a little, but would like to improve their techniques!

Good for developing a child’s imagination By Denniger Bolton I thought this book might be something that my young grandson might like since he is crazy about superheroes. This one shows you how to draw five superheroes, RoboCop, Wolverine, who he adores, Cat Woman, Robin, and the Incredible Hulk. While the drawings themselves are set up in stages or a step by step tutorial, it may be a little beyond his skill level. Or maybe not. As the author, Jess Well says, it’s good for a child’s concealed longing to be imaginative. This book is more than just a drawing book though and has many questions a parent can ask the child about the superhero, such as “Do they have a sidekick” or “What kind o an outfit do they wear?” “A common hideaway?”

I love superheroes, but they look so complex. Well, with help from this book I managed to draw many of my favorite ones after just practicing a day or so. I think the key to successful drawing is having someone break down all of the steps into an easy to follow package. That is exactly what this book does. Not only does it make it easy, but also fun. The author understands the needs of people who are beginning to draw and covers those in this book!

As soon as the song started, I recognised his voice. How could I ever forget it? That voice still echoed through my dreams, causing me to wake in cold sweat. If I could, I’d have knocked that radio to the ground and smashed it beneath my feet, shattering it into silence, every little piece destroyed so that Holden King would shut the fuck up and stop haunting me. But, since I was sitting in the back seat of a taxi on my way to work, that option was kind of impossible. If the song wasn't bad enough, Holden King swaggers back into my life, determined to rekindle the love he killed inside me. I'll never be able to trust that man again but my body responds to him in ways I can't control. This book is a standalone within the Access All Areas. It does contain cheating, in the back story only, but I know that is something that can be upsetting for some readers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love this series!!! Miss Starr is an amazing writer!!! You really get pulled into the stories. By Heidi I was given this amazing book for my honest review. If you remember Carlie, the bar tender for the club Trouble, from the first book in this series "Too Many Rock Stars" she was kind of a smart mouth. Carlie has a lot of anger built up inside her & when Holden King walks in to Trouble bringing back all the memories from the past, she nearly explodes. Holden has followed his dreams & is a famous Rock Star, when walks in to Trouble with one thing on his mind, he needs to get Carlie back & he's not leaving until he has her. Carlie finds out that Alex, her new boss, has hired Holden & his band to play at his Grand Opening for the upstairs dance area that he just remodeled. When she finds out what he used as payment, then she really gets angry & fights her attraction to Holden even harder. Holden has followed his dreams & has everything he ever wanted in life except he's missing the most important thing, Carlie. Can Carlie let go of the pain & anger she has for the past? Can Holden finally get her to give him the second chance he knows they both want?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed it. By Amazon Customer I enjoyed Carlie and Holden’s story. Carlie is an angry woman (you can feel her anger throughout the book). I kind of felt sorry for Holden and her friends. Holden wants a second chance but Carlie’s not budging. The chemistry between is two are off the charts. I loved the interactions of the customers, boss and employees of the bar (there are some funny moments). I couldn’t put down this book. I haven’t read the first book but I still enjoyed reading this book. I loved that they both realized that they’re not perfect and Carlie decides to give Holden a second chance. Recommended read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great from the first page By SusanH Ever since Holden broke her heart, Carlie has been trying to put her life back together. In the three years since, Holden has become a Rock Star and his song is everywhere, his song about her. Now he wants back into her life. Can she let him in, and what if she does and he breaks her heart again?

For Lindsey, things can't get much worse. She's unemployed, living in a crappy apartment, and in debt up to her ears. She can't see a way out of the mess she's living in until her former roommate, Victoria, offers up a strange idea. A dragon man on the island is looking for a slave and he'll pay anything to get what he wants. The commitment is for one year. The payment: half a million dollars. The only question is whether she's willing to give up a little bit of herself to get what she wants.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. What would you do? By Melissa Lindsey is a college graduate with the student loans to show for it. Unfortunately, having a degree does not guarantee a job. She has no job prospects, tons of debt, has just been dumped by a smug boyfriend, and is hitting a dead end professionally, emotionally, and financially. Then a old college roommate tells her that she may be able to help her. It's an unusual proposition. A man who lives on the same island as Victoria, wants to potentially hire her for a year in a 24/7 power exchange. Strictly business, no romance. He will own her body and soul for a year for 1/2 a million. Sounds like a crazy premise, but it actually is a good read.

The thing I love about dragon shifters is they are possessive, protective, and when they find a mate they look at them as a valuable treasure the have found.Lindsey found herself fresh out of college with school debt, bad breakup, credit card debt, and other bills that needed to be paid. She was not close to her parents and did not want to move back home. So when her friend Victoria told her of a dragon shifter on Dragon Isle that was looking for a sex slave for a year and it paid very very well she had to jump on the chance.Lindsey had to start to wonder what all this was going to entail. What if this was more then she could handle? What if she did not like him? What if he did not like her? There was so many unanswered questions.Kade was a handsome dragon shifter. He truly had a kind heart but he also had a very kinky side. He was lonely and longed for a S&M relationship. He longed for the perfect slave. When he met Lindsey he knew she was prefect.Kade does not realize how much danger Lindsey is in. This could not only break or kill Lindsey but it could break and destroy Kade. Kade has fallen in love with Lindsey and cannot handle anything happening to her. Will he be able to keep her safe?

I received a copy of this book as part of the Paws & Claws Vol 3 set (14 book set). I'm glad I had the chance to read Stepdragon (Dragon Isle). It gave me the chance to meet Victoria who is Lindsey's friend that convinced her to come to Dragon Isle. Lindsey has agreed to come live as a slave (submissive) to a dragon named Kade. In exchange for a year of her life her bills would be paid. She was facing homelessness so she agreed. Kade was anxious for a connection with someone even a paid companion but never expected all Lindsey would bring into his life. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Saturn's books in the future. I received a free copy of this book solely in exchange for an honest opinion.

The expanded and updated edition of David Shipler's Pulitzer Prize-winning book that examines the relationship, past and present, between Arabs and JewsIn this monumental work, extensively researched and more relevant than ever, David Shipler delves into the origins of the prejudices that exist between Jews and Arabs that have been intensified by war, terrorism, and nationalism.Focusing on the diverse cultures that exist side by side in Israel and Israeli-controlled territories, Shipler examines the process of indoctrination that begins in schools; he discusses the far-ranging effects of socioeconomic differences, historical conflicts between Islam and Judaism, attitudes about the Holocaust, and much more. And he writes of the people: the Arab woman in love with a Jew, the retired Israeli military officer, the Palestinian guerrilla, the handsome actor whose father is Arab and whose mother is Jewish. For Shipler, and for all who read this book, their stories and hundreds of others reflect not only the reality of "wounded spirits" but also a glimmer of hope for eventual coexistence in the Promised Land.

Arab and Jew: Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land, by David K. Shipler

Amazon.com Review The correspondent for The New York Times in Jerusalem from 1979 to 1984, David K. Shipler brings a very American moral commitment to the problem of Arab-Jewish relations. The occupation of the West Bank was by then a static fact of life; many young Israelis and Palestinians had grown up knowing no other reality. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the massacres of Palestinians by Lebanese militiamen at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, which were under Israeli control, had shaken the consciences of many American Jews. Many of the voices in this book are American, from idealistic young secular Jews working for Arab-Jewish cooperation to the more fanatical followers of Meir Kahane. This work, which won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, gives Shipler's narrative the power of a terrible family argument.

From Publishers Weekly The Jew, in the Arab stereotype, is a brutal, violent coward; the Arab, to the prejudiced Jew, is a primitive creature of animal vengeance and cruel desires. There is remarkable symmetry in these images, as Shipler (Russia: Broken Idols, Solemn Dreams points out in this hefty mixture of reportage, personal histories, interviews and scholarship. An act of courage and clarity, the book is an important contribution to the literature on the Middle East. The New York Times correspondent shows how Israeli Jews deny the reality that Palestinian Arabs are victims of forcible displacement and expulsion from what was once their homeland; he describes how a "synthetic Israeli history" is taught to Jewish schoolchildren, while Palestinian boys and girls in the refugee camps are taught militant rhetoric and hatred. Shipler explores the corrosive effects of terrorism by both sides, the zeal of Islamic fundamentalists, as well as that of Israeli ultraconservatives. BOMC and History Book Club alternates; first serial to the New York Times Magazine. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal int affairs The political and military dimensions of the middle Eastern crisis are the common stuff of headlines and books; Shipler focuses instead on the human dimension. In portraits of Arabs and Jews from all walks of life and political perspectives, he examines the "attitudes, images, and stereotypes that Arabs and Jews have of one another, the roots of their aversions, and the complex interactions between them. . . ." The effects of war, nationalism, terrorism, religion, and history come to life, illuminated by Shipler's insights drawn from his five-year residence in Jerusalem and his wide reading. While he concludes with a dream of a peaceful society growing out of direct links among the youth of the two groups, he offers no promise that such a dream can survive the hatred, fear, and pain. Highly recommended. Elizabeth R. Hayford, President, Assoc. Colls. of the Midwest, ChicagoCopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

By Linda Linguvic Subtitled "Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land", the author won a Pulitzer Prize for this book in 1987. He's a journalist for The New York Times and was assigned to Jerusalem from 1979-1984. The book has been updated in May of 2002 and now includes references to 9/11 as well as other more recent events in the Middle East. Now, more than ever, this book is relevant for an understanding of what is going on today. Mr. Shipler, who makes a point of saying that he is neither Jewish nor Arab, has an impartial American's point of view. The book is dense with facts and I found his explanations of the history of the region clear and balanced. The major part of the book, however, is devoted to a great many interviews of both Arabs and Jews. And, through their eyes, the reader is thrust into the human element of the conflict. Often, it is repetitive as over and over again he makes his point of contrasting the viewpoints from the different sides. But that only added to the intensity of the experience of reading this book, which was assigned as required reading for a course I am taking at NYU about the Middle East. I've taken other courses that dealt with the facts, but this book goes well beyond the facts. It goes into the hearts and minds of the people. In contrasting chapters he brings out the viewpoints of the opposing groups. The Arabs view the Israelis as violent, craven, and alien with a superior attitude. The Israelis view the Arabs as violent, craven, primitive and exotic. Both have fears and fantasies regarding seduction and intermarriage, and even though sometimes there is a mingling of cultures, fear and distrust usually prevails. The first edition of the book seems to end with a bit of hope as there are visits back and forth between Arab and Jewish schools, and some group activities inspired by the human potential movement. Some young people were even sent to camp together in Maine, and friendships were forged. However, by 2002, all this had turned to ashes as the last few years have again divided people and left each group with hatred for the other. Now I understand the reasons why.Reading this book was uncomfortable at times, but I'm well aware that it is more than merely uncomfortable for the people involved. Mr. Shipler has given me the opportunity to appreciate an experience that has always seemed strange and distant to me. It is not light reading. It's 531 pages of well-written prose that manages to unravel the threads of complexity and make it all seem real. I applaud Mr. Shipler for writing this book.

By LuelCanyon David Shipler's journalistic skills are enormous; the book is assembled nearly perfectly with balance, insight, and compassion. I've read it through twice, and have never found another book that comes close in terms of presenting the truth of the Middle East conflict. For American readers, the greatest service this book offers is an uncompromisingly fair, even wise, portrayal of the Palestinian side of the conflict in this region, if only because of America's historically pro-Israel policies; policies, incidentally, which have not always concerned themselves with truth. Because of that act of journalistic justice, the peculiarly touching aspect of Israel's unavoidable internal sorrow at her predicament becomes, perhaps for the first time, something understandable and noble. It is an easy thing to take sides in a situation such as one finds in the Middle East; it is not so easy to patiently explore the myriad strands of time and fate that weave through both sides of an 'unsolvable' conflict. This book goes a long way toward making an attempt to do just that. This is a clear-headed book 'spoken' by the very people involved; it is wise and engaging, and full of David Shipler's heart. It is no wonder that it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Highest recommendation!

The book goes in depth on the problems in Israel and the Middle East. Not just the problems that we hear about on TV. But the people problems. The author goes to the deep underlying problems. The people and their customes and beliefs. Covering the stereo types, the religious differences, their histories. The book interviews people about their fears. The author talks to both Arabs and Jews. He talks to Christians, Muslims and Jews. He reviews incidents of terrorism on all sides of the conflict. This is a must read book if you are interested in understanding the problems of the Middle East. Although it is full of information it is not hard to read. It goes a long way at explaining things. We all know that the problems in the Middle East are not easy to solve but this book showed me how truly deep the problems run. The prejudices from all sides are astounding. This is an outstanding piece of writing and research! Read it and enjoy.

While fog does not come easily or frequently to Central Texas, when it does, it inspires moments of quiet and reflection. David K. Langford captures those moments here in stirring images of the comings and goings of fog on Hillingdon Ranch, family land that has benefited from the stewardship of six generations. These photographs in turn inspired an essay by writer Rick Bass that takes him back to his own memories of fog—in the Texas Hill Country and elsewhere. Fog at Hillingdon includes a personal note by Langford on his techniques and camera equipment. Apt historic or contemporary quotations selected by Myrna Langford accompany many of the photographs and reflect the moods and sentiments fog often evokes.

The Hill Country is very old land, which I have walked and often lived in all of my life. I call it sacred because the quiet in these hills feeds the spirit in ways that seem to me to be very profound. I now live most of my life far from those old hills, but this magical volume carries with it the meditative blessing of their ancient presence. I am very grateful to have it.

I have many books on improvisation and all of them have something valuable. That said,Ready, Aim, Improvise is the most well organized, complete, sensible and above all, musical book on improvisation that I've seen yet.

His book, Ready, Aim, Improvise, is a "must read", by any musician who is serious about becoming a better improviser and consumate musician. The clarity of his ideas, no non-sense approach to developing as a musician is simply one of the finest texts I have read in over 35 years of teaching. It has been out there since 1999 or so, and remains a cornerstone in the field of jazz studies. I know I am not the first to say Thanks Hal !!!!.

A Funny Memoir of a Romanticized Dream By Timothy Richard Lansdon I really enjoyed reading this because although it was written over a hundred years ago, the wit of the author holds true to today. It is a very funny account of a couple city folk romanticizing on the life of running a farm only to find that it truly is difficult work. His writing style will really hold your attention and the illustrations are fantastic. I really recommend this quick read to anyone that fantasizes about taking on farming as a full time profession.
