I have often wondered about Miriam, the secretary/mother figure of the group. She seemed like a strong woman who was hiding some deep dark secrets and finally we get to see behind her mask with Click.Life had forced her to accept loss and betrayal and learn to pick up the pieces once those things happened. The connection she had with the guys at the security office was her main source of support. She begins to feel they take advantage of her for what she can do for them and not seeing the strong woman she has fought to become, so she jumped at the chance to take part in the latest job that came to the team. She never expected to make a connection with Jake Callahan when she first saw him, but soon she will realize there is more to Jake than what appears on the surface. He is carrying the weight of a burden regarding family and questions that demands answers. Little did he realize that his quest for knowledge will lead him to Miriam and the answers could tear them a part.I loved the intensity of this story. Miriam’s life will touch the hearts of women all over once you find out the fear she is carrying and how she decided to fight against the demon that resided within her. Watching Jake step out on his own, discarding the shadow that hovered over him for his whole life was heart breaking at times. Disappointment, loss, love and passion will weave a story for Miriam and Jake that will keep you on the edge of your seat and melting with emotion.Anne Conley has a way of making her characters connect to the readers, giving each of us a chance to say finally someone understands how we feel. Miriam and Jake, both are haunted by things that came from life, not of their own choices and to see the strength in them come to surface and overcome it was inspiring.

To be totally honest I was a little heartbroken that Quentin wasn't the love interest for Miriam, I was SOOOOO HIS cheerleader. Jake has a huge issue and it's his lying sneak of a twin brother, He of course turns to Pierce Securities for help trying to recover his parents hard earned money. One issue, they need a f3male for the job and the only female at Pierce is Mother figure Miriam. Miriam has enough of being not appreciated by the men in her life and she needs a kick start to get her femininity back after she has a voluntary mastectomy due to family history. She gets sent undercover to see if she can get to the bottom of the trouble Jake's seems to attract...... One issue, she has no idea Mr. Callahan is the twin brother to Jake, the kind handsome man that she meets in the grocery store stocking up on wine AND technically her client. Miriam starts to fall for Jake but thinks he has Jekyll and Hyde syndrome due to the differences when he is at the bar. Come to find out that Mr. Callahan angered the wrong people and he sends Miriam and unbeknownst to her his brother Jake on a gun run to Mexico. Miriam is in for the surprise of her life when she finally finds out the truth. Will it be too late? Will she finally take a chance? Or will it be too late? I can't wait for the next installment in this series. I LOVE all the guys and wait to see who's next!!****This review is based upon a complimentary copy of the work provided by the author in exchange for an honest review on behalf of This Redhead Loves books****

(A NEW BOOK FROM ANNE CONLEY) By Mary Lou PagePrincess Hoffman Title: CLICKSeries: Pierce Securities #3Category /Genre: Contemporary RomanceRecommended for: 18+ due to sexual contentReceived from: Anne Conley (in exchange for an honest review)Grammar/editing: ungraded – book received as an unedited ARC / errors excusedThis is the third book in the Pierce Securities series. Each does stand alone, though there are updates concerning each of the previous couples and I would definitely recommend reading all and in the order of release for maximum understanding and enjoyment. When I was younger (in the 1970s), there were a lot of little memes around (though we didn’t call them memes in those days) that started with, “Happiness is…” In my life, one of my “happiness is..” statements would be, “ Happiness is a new ARC from a favorite author.” Anne Conley is one of those authors and this is one of those ARCs. I am so happy that I got to read Miriam’s story.Miriam has been facing one of those fears that many of us confront every October. Because of family history and having faced that dragon three times in two years, she has decided to take an unconventional path in hopes of avoiding the beast. Though it was her decision, it has left her with feelings of diminished femininity and the fear of a lonely future. Add in a past abusive relationship, a team of co-workers who are alpha to the point of occasionally being overbearing, and the confusion of unknowingly meeting twins – one intriguing and the other a slime bucket - and Miriam is facing one tough, confusing, and scary time in her life.Only Anne Conley could bring the laughter to balance the fears, the gentle to .balance the alphas, and the drama to balance the temptation to be too sugar sweet in pursuing the romance in the story. My only complaint (the one I always have when reading from Anne Conley) is that we now have to wait for the next book. Yes, you distinctly heard me whining there.

Woodard Mark Woodard has drawn on many sources to produce a handy and historically accurate account of Summerville, S.C., the classic pinelandrefuge for Charlestonians and probably the first true railroad town in America. Lowcountry planters first realized that they could escape thesummer "sickly season" on the pine ridge beside the Sawmill Branch - then came the city people fleeing Yellow Fever. By 1890, invalids fromall around the world were filling the great inns of the village, seeking relief from pulmonary diseases. Biographies of memorable locals andlots of images keep the reading light; war stories and the most destructive earthquake east of the Mississippi River help to shake up the tale. The writing style is informal and friendly, appealing to visitors on tour through the heavily-wooded historic districts. Home Sweet Home helps make sense of a very Southern town with an atypical history. Dr. Ed West, President of Summerville Dorchester History Museum

Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes. He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter. She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her. Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion. Breathing Vapor is Book 2 in the Cyborg Sizzle series and is a STANDALONE story. It is also a dark BBW Cyborg SciFi Romance.

By Marta Cox Having read the previous book Releasing Rage I just had to find out what happens next in this world Ms Sax has created. There's a war going on and the cyborgs are slap bang in the middle of it all but the humans who abuse them have no idea just how advanced this new generation of cyborgs really are. Vapor is probably the biggest and baddest with a kill record that few can emulate but like his brethren he has no intention of remaining a weapon for those who see him as just a machine. The cyborgs target their creators daughter Mira as they believe that cold obnoxious female deserves to die but first of all Vapor needs to discover all her secrets.Mira the Merciless is the name they whisper when she walks by but Mira is not exactly the piece of ice that the world perceives. No she has closed herself off, shut down her feelings and all so she can put right the terrible wrongs that her own father the Designer allows to happen. Yet Vapor is about to threaten not just her life but everything she has worked for and Mira may not care if she lives or dies but her mission is worth everything. Problem is Vapor is everything Mira needs and the connection they share is undeniable but passion is not enough to a cyborg honestly , loyalty and integrity mean so much more. So will Vapor complete his task and neutralise Mira?I pick up a book by this author and I know I'm guaranteed a very hot read. I really liked that this book is set on a planet and not just in space as it opens up the world that the author has created. We get to see the much bigger picture as action scenes pepper this book involving both the Humanoid Alliance and those who resist. I will point out here that this book has violent and dark scenes that are not pleasant. However it was very obvious that poor Vapor was probably the last person/cyborg to take Mira out of the picture as right from the start he is uber protective of her . Yes he is one possessive and dare I say obsessed male? Mira might be attracted to the big lug but she is not one to open up easily and her years of playing a part are not simply cast aside. She is brave, much kinder than she appears but in public sharper than diamonds. I thought Ms Sax did a remarkable job of showing just how deep and at times fragile Mira really was . If I have any niggles it's just that I'm not a huge fan of spanking and there is a lot of that in this story but that's just a personal thing and I'm sure other readers will enjoy the slightly more heated scenes. Bottom line ( pun intended ) for me is this erotic story has left me wanting to find out just what happens next and just how far the authors imagination is prepared to go on this journey with her very sexy cyborgsI was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest reviewFour and a half from me

This book has a lot going for it- an honorable, sexy leading male (a virgin in the beginning, for those of you who care about that); a heroine that has a heart of gold buried beneath her initially cold exterior. As was the case in Releasing Rage, the chemistry was fantastic and the love scenes will leave you feeling tingly all over.It was, however, very violent; almost too violent for me to handle. On the second or third page they're already executing prisoners who beg for their lives while soiling themselves. I was ready to put it down then and there, but I'm glad I didn't, even though the violence got much worse. I thought Releasing Rage was violent, but at least it was just bad people getting their comeuppance. In Breathing Vapor there is some of that, but also mass genocide, including the systematic killing of little children. It was hard to take, and some readers may wish to skip this book for that reason.Still, I'm not one to trash a good book just because it had dark moments. Some of the most celebrated pieces of literature wouldn't pass that kind of muster. I did really enjoy it, though I cried a lot. Sometimes I wept tears of sadness, other times I wept tears of joy. If you can stomach the violence (and the sex- though I don't understand why anyone wouldn't like reading about sex) I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading science fiction romance novels.

Beginners in photography will let their camera's Auto mode handle all of the complexities of aperture, shutter speed, white balance and so on. But as useful as Auto is in these early stages, it will rapidly limit you to boring, technically perfect shots that won't spark any interest. Beyond Auto is the easily accessible guide that shows how taking control of your camera's settings sets you free. Unlike other beginner books, it doesn't attempt to explain each and every button, dial and feature on your camera, or explore precisely where a pixel comes from. Instead it concentrates on the photographic "holy trinity" of exposure, focus and color, and the essential skills that will enable you to take the sensational pictures that Auto mode can't.

This little book explains how everything works. If you are a seasoned photographer this book isn't for you. However, if you are a newbie & want to understand the basics this is the perfect little book. Simple & too the point with a glossary of camera terms.

Rayne has always had the distinction of being a very progressive city. Once a building was worn or considered no longer modern, it was torn down, making way for a new structure to be raised in its place. Images of America: Lost Rayne has taken on the monumental task of preserving images of buildings, whether businesses or residences, that will allow future generations to see Rayne as it has changed during its 132-year history. Readers can almost smell bread baking at Privats Bakery while sipping French drip coffee nearby at Pacos. Just around the corner, blocks of ice can be heard falling down their chutes at Jacque Weils, along with the unmistakable sounds of the Lamson tubes at Mervine Kahns. These landmarks may be long gone, but the memories will be forever etched in our minds.

Many thought China’s rise would fundamentally remake the global order. Yet, much like other developing nations, the Chinese state now finds itself entrenched in a status quo characterized by free trade and American domination. Through a cutting-edge historical, sociological, and political analysis, Ho-fung Hung exposes the competing interests and economic realities that temper the dream of Chinese supremacy—forces that are stymieing growth throughout the global South. Hung focuses on four common misconceptions about China’s boom: that China could undermine orthodoxy by offering an alternative model of growth; that China is radically altering power relations between the East and the West; that China is capable of diminishing the global power of the United States; and that the Chinese economy would restore the world’s wealth after the 2008 financial crisis. His work reveals how much China depends on the existing order and how the interests of the Chinese elites maintain these ties. Through its perpetuation of the dollar standard and its addiction to U.S. Treasury bonds, China remains bound to the terms of its own prosperity, and its economic practices of exploiting debt bubbles are destined to fail. Dispelling many of the world’s fantasies and fears, Hung warns of a postmiracle China that will grow increasingly assertive in attitude while remaining constrained in capability.

The China Boom: Why China Will Not Rule the World (Contemporary Asia in the World), by Ho-fung Hung

Review

[An] informative study.... [The China Boom] paints a convincing picture that China may not be the superpower many predicted it to be.

(Publishers Weekly)

This valuable treatise will appeal to both scholars and more casual readers with an interest in China.

(Library Journal)

Masterful.

(Foreign Affairs)

It is a fast-paced, highly readable, thoroughly provocative, and (rare for an academic book) truly enjoyable account of 400 years of Chinese economic history right up to the present day.

(Asian Review of Books)

So many books on China recycle the same stories and historical anecdotes, but this one tells the story from the point of view of economic history. It is scholarly yet readable, interesting throughout.

(Marginal Revolution)

Review

A very readable and informative book that will find a wide readership. Its great strength is that it shows on many different fronts that the notion of China's rising dominance may be unrealistic or, at least, premature.

(Victor Shih, University of California, San Diego)

Timely and important, Ho-fung Hung's accessible and clear-eyed assessment of China's prospects, rooted in both the longer patterns of China's own history and global economics, reaches unexpected and reassuring conclusions. A stimulating intellectual journey led by a calm and judicious guide.

(Robert A. Kapp, former president of the U.S.-China Business Council)

Ho-Fung Hung's important and stimulating work places China's recent economic reforms and development trajectory firmly within their proper historical context, thereby releasing them from triumphalist or defeatist narratives that begin in 1949 or 1978. The China of the past four decades, Hung shows us, is the same China that has wrestled with modernization since the early Qing Dynasty and has faced the same problems many times before.

(Michael Pettis, Peking University)

Ho-fung Hung's brilliant analysis of the intertwining of China's national trajectory with the evolution of global capitalism adds new energy and insights to one of the most fundamental debates in contemporary political economy.

(Peter Evans, University of California, Berkeley)

China, By Someone That Actually Knows What He Is Talking About By Andy in Washington For those of us who remember the American business world of the 1980’s and 90’s, we lived in fear that the Japanese system was going to take over the world’s business. The Japanese made all the steel, built all the cars, were buying up American property, and generally seemed to have the whole “management thing” figured out. The popular business press consisted of doomsday projections for American business, and articles on how to mimic the Japanese success. Anyone who forecast an end to Japanese dominance was out-of-touch or a dreamer. Then a funny thing happened. The Japanese system had, buried within it, systemic problems. Stodgy companies, poor demographics and over-investment led to a period of contraction and deflation, making the Japanese economy a problem child in the 90’s and 2000’s.Ho-fung Hung provides a very similar analysis for modern-day China. While the popular press praises the “China Model” of low labor costs, high investment and state-managed capitalism, Hung explores the problems inherent in that model.=== The Good Stuff ===* Hung knows what he is talking about. He is not afraid to cross disciplines, and makes his arguments using politics, economics, social sciences, history, military analysis, government policy…and probably every other department of a modern university. He is able to tie these together to form a coherent and logical argument about his views of China going forward.* The book starts out a little stuffy, and I was preparing myself for 300 pages of academic gobbledygook. But Hung quickly finds his voice, and the book becomes a pleasant and informative narrative. It is not light reading, but it is not a college economics textbook either. If you are able to understand simple economic concepts, some basic math, and read at the high-school level, you will enjoy the book and understand Hung’s arguments. For the most part, Hung avoids hand-waving and appeals to “common sense”-rather he backs his opinions with facts and accepted theories.* Hung is not afraid to tackle “sacred cows” and present unpopular viewpoints. For example, he notes that the “Great Leap Forward”, while a brutal and painful experience for many of China’s citizens, did in fact achieve its goal. By forcing production resources out of agriculture, China was able to use its agricultural economic bounty to fund its industrialization. Marx, Keynes and Greenspan would have recognized the strategy, if not the tactics.* The book also touches on real-work questions. Anyone who has visited Shanghai has no doubt shaken their head and wondered, “Where did all the money come from”? Any visitor to areas a little off the beaten path must have questioned the environmental costs of China’s rapid rise, or thought about the happiness of low-paid workers living in a corporate dormitory. Hung explores, and provides at least one analysis, on questions such as these.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* I am almost afraid to type this, but I wonder about some of Hung’s facts. Specifically, he seems to take Chinese government statistics as being correct and truthful. Much of what I have read specifically warns about this. To be fair, Hung uses a variety of sources and tries to backstop whenever possible.* The narrative occasionally jumps around a bit, especially from year to year. Nothing too confusing, but a little tighter editing might have helped.=== Summary ===I loved the book, and would absolutely recommend it for anyone who thinks they understand China, or wants to understand more about it. While Hung takes a definite viewpoint, he defends it well and connects many areas into one unified thought. I don’t agree 100% with his conclusions ---I think he is a bit pessimistic about China--- but I would prepare carefully if I was ever to argue the point with him. The book is a bit of a “serious” read, but nothing too difficult or obscure and I ended up reading it in two or three sessions. I plan to recommend the book to a number of people who have an interest in business in China.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

Hung effectively discredits the naive views that the Chinese "model" is superior and that China is a disruptive power likely to replace the USA or even merely challenge the US as a global hegemon. This is a thoughtful book that starts with a concise and thoughtful overview of Chinese economic history going back to the Early Modern period. This includes description of the engagement with the emerging global economy in the late Ming-Qing periods, a discussion of the lack of industrialization of the very large and advanced Qing economy, and the failure of a series of state-led efforts at catch up during the disastrous 19th century and first half of the 20th century. The latter were due in good part to the weakness of the Qing state and its initial successors. This is followed by an excellent chapter on the Maoist period, which Hung argues convincingly provided the platform for the subsequent growth of the Chinese economy. For all the enormous crimes of the Maoist period, committed by what is likely the most brutal regime in modern history, China was left with a very large, relatively healthy and literate workforce, a real industrial base, and considerable new infrastructure. An interesting point is that this was achieved without incurring external debt, which shielded China from from many of the problems experienced by developing nations in the second half of the 20th century. Hung then describes the series of reforms that led to the remarkable Chinese boom, stressing the role of state leadership, a synergistic relationship with the neo-liberal order that emerged in the last quarter of the 20th century, the crucial role of export industries, the ways China followed the paths of and actually became the center of other Asian economic successes, and the interesting role of capital and management investments, some from overseas Chinese entrepreneurs, some later from American banks. The narrative chapters are followed by a set of more analytical chapters addressing China's role in reducing global inequality, whether China will replace the US, and the role of China in the most recent global economic crisis. Hung finds China's role in reducing global inequality to be ambiguous. He argues convincingly that China's prospects of becoming a global hegemon are slight. China has and may continue to produce some readjustment of global power but China's economic growth and continued success depends on the existing world economic system, so the likelihood of being a major revisionist power is small. Indeed, Hung points to some interesting examples of the ways in which China actually contributes to American power, notably its complicity in maintaining the dollar as the world's reserve currency and its thirst for US government debt. He concludes this section with an interesting analysis of the ways in which the structure of the Chinese economy contributed to the last great economic crisis. Throughout this book, he points out considerable defects of the Chinese economic system and the existence of a series of powerful problems that are likely to produce enormous problems. Rectifying these problems will require considerable reform and as some of these defects are built into the Party-State, they will be hard to address without significant political reform, a daunting prospect. All of this is a very useful corrective to a great deal of the nonsense written about China. There are some defects of Hung's arguments. A minor issue is his treatment of why China didn't industrialize. A sociologist, he looks for sociological explanations and finds them in some interesting facts about merchant elites in Qing China. Like a lot of social scientists who have dealt with this topic, he implies that appropriate social or economic structure will automatically lead to the kinds of technological innovations that are the heart of industrialization. This is improbable. More important is that while Hung's analysis of the economic defects of China is on target, he largely omits some additional factors that are likely to impair China. China's rapidly aging population is discussed only in the context of labor force. This aging population, however, will impose unprecedented care burdens for which the Chinese state is wholly unprepared. A related aspect which I've seen almost no one discuss is the severe health threats faced by Chinese society. China has a tobacco abuse epidemic and is beginning a diabetes epidemic that are going to have major consequences. Hung mentions but doesn't really discuss the enormous environmental problems faced by China, another series of problems that will require enormous reforms. Finally, while Hung is correct that China is unlikely to replace the US as a global hegemon it may be more disruptive than he suggests. Authoritarian states under pressure, particularly challenges to legitimacy, tend to use aggressive foreign policy to boost social solidarity. We may see this in the near future.

Enjoyable By Autamme_dot_com To some, this book may appear to be heresy or denying the inevitable, no matter what they would like to otherwise believe. Yet can this book be incredibly incisive or just stating what might be the obvious fact – China will NOT rule the world. Is the author criticising the new clothes of the emperor? Maybe China will not become the world-dominating superpower many fear, expect or await. Time will tell, yet nonetheless the author offers up an interesting analysis and forecast through a mix of politics, sociology, business and history. Four key points are taken up that, the author claims, show that China’s current meteoric growth is transient. There are said to be misconceptions about China’s boom, namely that that China could undermine orthodoxy by offering an alternative model of growth; that China is radically altering power relations between the East and the West; that China is capable of diminishing the global power of the United States; and that the Chinese economy would restore the world’s wealth after the 2008 financial crisis. Many have pointed towards China’s present “financial hold” on the West due to it being the low-cost workshop of the world, sucking in masses of foreign currency; yet many point out that whilst China could dump the Dollar and create a world meltdown in the process, it is in the country’s own interests (and especially its elites’ interest) to maintain the status quo and not do anything rash. In more recent months many cracks have appeared in Chinese financial markets and structures; is the economy over-heating and what may occur if things start to split. China is probably trying to rapidly paddle and maintain the status quo for its own selfish reasons; at the same time the rest of the world can watch on and hope…The author has put together a gripping read about a fascinating subject within an engaging, credible package. It manages to be accessible to the generalist reader whilst being a nuanced, actionable book for the academic or specialist. It is not screeching hysterics but provides a fairly matter-of-fact assessment with a lot of referenced sources so the sceptical, curious or argumentative reader can dig deeper as required. There is a lot to this book; at times it felt overwhelming, but maybe it is the equivalent of a good Chinese buffet dinner; a lot of things for everyone and it is good to offer more than most people could consume. It was an interesting, pleasurable read and it could be good to put this book into a time capsule and look back in the future to see just how right on the money the author was.

I had seen the ads and the teasers and the photos that the author posted and kept thinking, this is a book I want to read. I wasn’t disappointed. This first publication by Diana is absolutely stunning. The story will have you laughing, holding your breath and falling in love with ten of the most adorable little boys ever to grace a book. The love story between Seth and Sage is truly beautiful but most of all, the little boys will steal your heart. This is the first book in a trilogy that I will be standing in line again for the next installment. Please do yourself and this amazing author a favor and read this masterpiece of a story.

A deep exploration of modern life that examines our cities, public places, and homesIn Mysteries of the Mall, Witold Rybczynski, the author of How Architecture Works, casts a seasoned critical eye on the modern scene. His subject is nothing less than the broad setting of our metropolitan world.

In thirty-four discerning essays, Rybczynski ranges over topics as varied as shopping malls, Central Park, the Opéra Bastille, and America's shrinking cities. Along the way, he examines our post-9/11 obsession with security, the revival of the big-city library, the rise of college towns, our fascination with vacation homes, and Disney's planned community of Celebration. By looking at contemporary architects as diverse as Frank Gehry, Moshe Safdie, and Bing Thom, revisiting old masters such as Palladio, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright, and considering such unsung innovators as Stanley H. Durwood, the inventor of the cineplex, Rybczynski ponders the role of global metropolises in an age of tourism and reflects on what kinds of places attract us in the modern city.

Mysteries of the Mall is required reading for anyone curious about the contemporary world and how it came to be the way it is.

Review

“It is the attention [Rybczynski] pays space―an enthusiastic and highly infectious kind of attention, something close to an architectural evangelism―that both freshens our eyes and grants new perspectives on the intentionality of our environment . . . A deft and sensible guide, Rybczynski charms, challenges, and finally, welcomes us into a world we may never have realized could be so enthralling . . . This one is required reading for anyone interested in the story of architecture―or the shape of the modern world.” ―Dustin Illingworth, The Brooklyn Rail

“[H]is writing is, like his architectural leanings, clear and civil, and full of cocktail-worthy trivia.” ―Mike Doherty, Maclean's

“A superb book for those interested in architectural history, written in an easygoing style by a man with encyclopedic knowledge and an obvious great love for building.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“[Rybczynski is] an eloquent critic with a range of interests as broad as his voluminous published work . . . the prose sparkles . . . Over the course of his career, Rybczynski has proven a deft guide to the work of countless architects; here, he is just as sage a curator of his own criticism.” ―Anthony Paletta, Publishers Weekly (boxed signature review)

“Throughout the collection, Rybczynski’s writing is clear-headed and thoughtful, knowledgeable but unpretentious . . . the awe, appreciation and wonder that Rybczynski has for architecture can be infectious.” ―Anna Weiner, The New Republic

About the Author Witold Rybczynski has written about architecture for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Slate. Among his award-winning books are Home, The Most Beautiful House in the World, and A Clearing in the Distance, which won the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. Dixon Jr. Witbold Rybczynski is as good a writer as his name is difficult to spell. I have read everything of his I can get my hands on and appreciate his clear articulation of the dynamics of architecture, culture and society in our age. I give this book only four of five stars due to the fact that many of these essays are rather obscure; there also seems to be no rhyme or reason to the collections: just a bunch of his short works thrown together. Still, it is thrilling to read of his opinions anytime; I only wish that the editors had seen fit to include illustrations of the various buildings and structures that Rybczyinski discusses. I found myself constantly sent to Google Images to figure out just what it was he was talking about. This is not a good book to introduce the reader to Rybczynski's ideas, as it is far too disparate. I would suggest his earlier works, especially, The Perfect House. Still, it is a pleasure to read an author who really understands what's going on and can explain things so clearly to us laymen.

I could not have conquered it had my life been at stake. There were thousands of people in town on Tuesday. I heard it was President's Day. All those people seemed bowing to the great ruler. I made up my mind to kill that ruler.” – Leon Czolgosz In September 1901, the city of Buffalo was full of celebration. The Pan-American Exposition was ongoing, and it brought notable figures to northern New York, including President William McKinley, who had been reelected less than a year earlier. But also in Buffalo was Leon Czolgosz, a young man who had turned to anarchy years earlier after losing his job, Embracing his philosophy wholeheartedly, Czolgosz believed it was his mission to take down a powerful leader he considered oppressive, and McKinley’s attendance gave him the chance. President James Garfield had been assassinated just 20 years earlier, but McKinley didn’t worry about presidential security or his own safety, and that was the case in Buffalo. McKinley’s insistence on greeting the public and shaking hands allowed Czolgosz to walk up to him on September 6, 1901 at a public reception in the Temple of Music on the expo grounds and shoot him point blank, with one bullet grazing the president and another lodging in his abdomen. In the aftermath of the shooting, as Czolgosz was beaten and seized by the crowd, he uttered, "I done my duty." For his part, McKinley said, “He didn't know, poor fellow, what he was doing. He couldn't have known." Despite being president, McKinley’s medical services were shoddy, and given the still primitive medical standards of the early 20th century, gunshots to the abdomen often brought death. One of the best known aspects of the assassination is that Thomas Edison’s x-ray machine was on hand and may have been used to try to locate the bullet that doctors couldn’t find, but for reasons that remain unknown, the x-ray machine was not used. Nevertheless, McKinley seemed to improve over the next few days, and people became optimistic he would be all right. As H. Wayne Morgan, one of McKinley’s biographers, noted, “His hearty constitution, everyone said, would see him through. The doctors seemed hopeful, even confident ... It is difficult to understand the cheer with which they viewed their patient. He was nearly sixty years old, overweight, and the wound itself had not been thoroughly cleaned or traced. Precautions against infections, admittedly difficult in 1901, were negligently handled.” Ultimately, McKinley’s wounds became gangrenous a week after he was shot, and after he took a turn for the worse, he died on the morning of September 14, nearly 8 days after he was shot. The Assassination of President William McKinley: McKinley was the 3rd president to be assassinated, and today he is often remembered as one of the presidents to die in office after being elected every 20 years after William Henry Harrison’s 1840 election. However, the most notable consequence of the assassination is who it brought to power. Ironically, New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt's political enemies hoped to rid the state of their progressive governor by elevating him to national prominence. At the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, the New York machine leaders decided to promote Roosevelt for the vice presidency, and in so doing, remove him from New York. At the time, the vice president was notoriously insignificant in national politics, so the political machinists thought that making Roosevelt the vice president would turn him into a nobody. The History and Legacy of the President’s Death chronicles the tumultuous chain of events that led to McKinley’s death and Roosevelt’s presidency. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you’ll learn about the assassination of McKinley like never

William McKinley was the third president to be assassinated but I really didn’t know much about the assassination or the assassin. Pres. McKinley was assassinated about one year into his second term. The interesting to note that the security for the president was definitely lax by modern terms and the president would have most likely survived with modern medical care. The president’s personal secretary (George Cortelyou) appeared to be the go to person who was in charge of his nonmedical care and communication, and almost seems to be in charge of the government between Pres. McKinley’s wounding and death. The assassin was Leon Czolgosz who stated he was anarchist; but, many members of the anarchist community considered him to be a spy. The assassin indicated that a speech by Emma Goldman who believed in anarchy and socialism was a leading factor in his decision to assassinate the president. I think the most interesting part of the book was a short discussion that Theodore Roosevelt was given the vice presidents slot to remove him from the New York State governorship, and he most likely would never have been given the opportunity to become vice president if the powerbrokers believed he might become president. I highly recommend this book for a quick and concise reading about the assassination of Pres. William McKinley.

Finally, an American Environmental History for everyone! After years of teaching Environmental History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst without a textbook, Dan Allosso decided to take matters into his own hands. The result is a concise, comprehensive survey covering the material from Dan's undergraduate course in a format that will appeal to anyone interested in how we got where we are today. What do people say about the class? "This was my first semester and this course has created an incredible first impression. If all of the courses are this good, I am going to really enjoy my time here. The course has completely changed the way I look at the world." (Student in 2014 class) "One of the few classes I'm really sad is ending, the subject matter is fascinating and Dan is a great guide to it. His approach should be required of all students as it teaches an appreciation for a newer and better way of living." (Student in 2014 class) "Allosso's lectures are fantastic. The best I have ever had. So impressed. The material is always extremely interesting and well-presented." (Student in 2015 class) "It is just a perfect course that I think should be mandatory if we want to save our planet and live responsibly." (Student in 2015 class) Beginning in prehistory and concluding in the present, American Environmental History explores the ways the environment has affected the choices that became our history, and how our choices affected the environment. The dynamic relationship between people and the world around them is missing from mainstream history. Putting the environment back into history helps us make sense of the past, which will help guide us toward a better future.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Accessible to a broad audience By CJF The field of environmental history is littered with interesting studies that simply aren't approachable for most beginners. Allosso corrects this problem in the first part of his thoughtful and concisely written textbook. Beginning with the Ice Age, he walks the reader through the important role that agriculture and the environment played in the development and evolution of the earliest North American societies. Turning next to European expansion, Allosso illustrates how human beings both act and are acted upon by a variety of factors in the environment. Worth note is his vivid description of the important role that biological factors played in the development and evolution of the American colonies. Indeed, he carefully traces how the spread of disease was the critical factor allowing Europeans to establish the American colonies and consolidate their control over abundant resources that drove the famous triangle trade.Perhaps just as important, this textbook illustrates the central role that the environment played as catalyst to historical events, like the American Revolution. For Allosso, the creation and evolution of the United States of America is inextricably linked to the acquisition of resources and development of land. He reminds us, for example, that one of the driving factors which doomed the Articles of Confederation was a struggle between various states for control of western lands. Ultimately, the author makes a convincing case that when we focus on the most important events, themes, and factors that shaped American history between 1776 and the coming of the Civil War in 1860, we can not understand them without recognizing the complicated relationship between human beings and the environment. The Northwest Ordinance, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Transportation and Commercial Revolutions, sectionalism, the Trail of Tears, and even the whole notion of American exceptionalism simply cannot be understood without recognizing that the environment has shaped politics, economics, and public policy since European settlement. Because of its clear prose, attention to detail, and accessibility to a broad audience of readers, Allosso's textbook is the standard by which future American environmental history textbooks should be judged.

Written in a plain style students will find easy to follow By Kevin Furst Working in the K-12 environment with IB schools, it is often difficult to find ancillary and supporting curricula that are the unique blend of current topics, deeper focus, and a lexile level that is still approachable for high school readers. Written in a plain style students will find easy to follow, Mr. Allosso's book is a rare gem for an IB ESS teacher or any social studies teacher looking for an 11th or 12th grade supplementary text that aims to provide an historical context for the environmental reality in America today. Though likely written for a university student, this text has a range of topics that are engaging to K12 students featuring current thoughts on American Environmental history. The bonus is that unlike most official publications, the low price of this paperback edition makes it affordable enough to order a classroom set and justify its use as a companion text.Highly recommend.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The best book I have ever read on perspectives! By C. Brant I can say without a doubt this is the best book I have read on perspectives. The reason is that Justin goes nice and slowly through the examples. You can flip from page to page and see all of the smallest of changes made. This makes it super simple to copy what he is doing.Another thing I love with this book is that he shows how to do the different perspectives from multiple angles. In many books they show just looking down a railway track, but this one goes from above, below and level and at different sides. Really amazing book and you must check this one out!

I find this book useful for all, not only for beginners. She has taken some drawing samples for her project. Simple and clear instruction plus illustrations make this book valuable on learning and mastering drawing in perspective.

Great information in this book. I like that I can draw along with the lessons. This book will stay in my reference section.
