Sometimes the biggest risk is playing it safe.

Gen Richards is tired of living down to her family’s expectation of the helpless blind girl. Resurrecting her high-school bucket list that begins with “kiss a total stranger” seems just the thing until she finds herself in a panty-melting lip lock with her big brother’s best friend.

Chance Anderson thrives on adrenaline, but Genny’s the one risk he’s not willing to take. His recklessness a decade ago landed her in the hospital and ejected him from her life. He’s bad for her and everyone knows it—especially her big brother.

Chance reluctantly helps Gen complete her bucket list in order to keep her out of trouble. Running through a freezing fountain, playing spin the bottle while fending off a mad horde of stinging insects, and skinny dipping with homicidal attack swans don’t hold a candle to the real danger: falling for the one person he can never have.

By Maria Rose This story is the third in the Anderson brothers series, all standalone, and each of which I have enjoyed tremendously as lighthearted romantic comedies. The Anderson brother might share the genes that have gifted them with good looks, but each brother has been quite different in character and temperament. In this story, we get Chase who works with his brothers at their family firm but is also an adrenaline junkie who loves to do big and bold things. He's also never forgotten his first love Genny, a woman who has been blind from birth. A series of unfortunate events in their teen years destroyed their burgeoning relationship (as well as his close friendship with her brother) and he was determined to stay away from her at the request of her family. But ten years later Gen is trying to show her family that she doesn't need to be treated as a child anymore, and she's moved out to prove her independence. When she happens upon Chase at a bar, she kisses him as part of her 'I may be blind but I'm still alive' bucket list item that starts with kissing a stranger. Only she knows as soon as it's done that he is no stranger after all. With this sudden re-introduction to the teenage boy, now man, who broke her heart, can the two of them make peace with the past and make a new future together?I had high expectations for this story which were perfectly met. I loved Gen's character, and it was delightful to see this woman who has lived with her blindness her whole life making the most of things. She doesn't wallow in self pity, she just does what she needs to do. She's tired of her family treating her like she's going to fall apart at any moment, and to prove it she's moved out on her own and is making her own living working in the sound recording field. She's feisty, funny, sweet and a wonderful, caring friend. It's no wonder that Chase has never gotten over her, though his sense of guilt over an event that could have turned out much more serious has dogged him for years. Once they are back in each other's lives, he's determined to help her any way he can, including with her bucket list (which she gleefully blackmails him into helping her with by threatening to tell her brother about their kiss). Chase goes one better, challenging her to do things that even she has doubts about. I loved the way he treated her, with respect and admiration but never seeing her as an invalid. And how sweet too, that in their years apart he still went through the effort of learning braille, and doing things in his own life so that even if he never got the chance to be with her again, she would still be a big part of his life. They still share some definite chemistry, and now as adults there is no hesitation on their parts (despite some minor guilt Chase feels about Gen being his former friend's little sister) to explore this. They share some steamy scenes together that help them to reconnect physically and emotionally. I thought the author did an excellent job of bringing to life the challenges a blind person experiences while at the same time showing how overcoming those same challenges gives that person a new sense of self. This was truly a delightful story and one with a lot of heart to go along with the humor. 4.5 stars.

Gen is a strong women with obstacle that she has to over come. Strong willed and strong minded. Chance didn't have a chance once she kissed him. The details that Marissa put in the book was outstanding. It was like we were transported into the book and were there for the struggles that they were going through. Gen didn't use her handicap as a crutch and in the end she was so much stronger. The love between the two is strong and at the end I was so happy that they won. There was not much that I disliked. I think at the end I wanted more and of course it was the end. Marissa did awesome and it is a must read. This review was wrote for Kylie's Fiction Addiction.

Love Conquers By BuckeyeGirl I’ll start this review by saying I did not read the first two Anderson Brothers books, but I honestly do not feel it is necessary to enjoy Chance of a Lifetime. Though the other Anderson brothers and their significant others make cameo appearances in this book, it is not necessary to know exactly how they wound up with their partner in order to fall into the story. This is the first book I’ve read by Marissa Clarke and I thought it was well done.Gen Richards is a vibrant woman with a disability she wishes didn’t define her—she’s blind. After a lifetime of being treated like a handicapped individual by her overbearing family, she’s had enough. Her parents and her brother have done nothing but interfere with her life and she feels smothered. And rightly so—I might add. I was ready to shake the heck out of her older brother, Walter. Yes, Gen is blind, but she had definitely proven she is capable of living her life and living it her way, but Walter wants to treat her like an invalid—and it’s infuriating. So, Gen decides she’s going to tackle her bucket list—a list she’d made ten years earlier as a teenager. Kiss a stranger. Skydive (which I might add should be on everyone’s bucket list)! Dance in the rain. Lose her virginity. You know—the usual. So as she sits in a bar with her friend sipping on drinks, she resolves to start checking things off right then—right now—and starting with kissing a stranger. Only thing is—the guy she kisses is not a stranger but the guy she once believed to be her best friend and her biggest crush, Chance Anderson.Chance is your rambunctious, free-willed, fun-loving adrenaline junkie—the youngest of three brothers and no surprise. But he’s worn out his rebellious nature and has found that all the energy he burns doing the things that get his blood pumping would be better spent loving the woman who has owned his heart forever—Gen Richards. What stands in their way? Misunderstanding. Pride. Walter—for God’s sake. But after kissing Chance to kick off her bucket list, things between Gen and Chance take off in a flurry. It’s a sweet story. I always love the friends-to-lovers stories. This is slightly different in that at the time of the story, Chance and Gen are not really friends anymore. But once they reconnect, the reader realizes that even through misunderstanding and ten years of not speaking, these two had one of those once in a lifetime friendships—one of those once in a lifetime loves.I must admit though—I was baffled how ten years could go past with such a huge misunderstanding between Gen’s family and Chance’s. Chance and Walter were best friends. How do best friends have so little faith each other? And how does Gen not question these things? Why does it take her so long to get the “balls” so-to-speak to question what happened all those years ago? But I do love it when Gen finally does stand up for herself.I give Ms. Clarke’s Chance of a Lifetime 4 silver buckles.

I wish the author had given more in depth description of the characters so I could get a visual of what they looked like. I also feel like the story jumped around and I was confused on where the story took place and tbought the book had proof reading . They talked about hyenas and lions then he talked about shooting elk and grizzlies. Those animals leave on separate parts of the world. I also feel like the hero was burdened by the herione a lot but the characters did get there HEA.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good story, but needs work. By jcat This was an interesting story, giving a look at the way Lions actually live in this world rather than glorifying a WereLion or WereLioness.BUT, that brings me to my first issue; what are lions and lionesses doing in California? I can understand Mountain Lions, but here we're talking long manes on the males. Sounds like Lions to me.Secondly, when these Werelions die or get killed, they turn back into humans. Who explains all these bodies? Thirdly, I'm sorry--but what kind of guy makes love to a woman (even a werelioness) right after she gives birth? As you can maybe figure out, I'm having a lot of trouble with the world building, as well as the actions of the characters.Add to the above points that the proofreading sucks. Plus it's as if two books were put together into one, because the second half repeated a great deal of the first half.Still, there was a lot of potential in this book, and something induced me to continue reading until the end. Which was a pretty good ending. So even with all my complaints, I consider it to still be an OK read--but it needs work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Good Read By Valarie C. I found this story to be a good read. I gave the book 4 Stars due to some editing errors and some repetition, that started after chapter 8.Also it became a bit rushed I felt it needed to be a bit more in depth. The story line was different and ended with a twist. What I thought was going to happen, did not and for that it stands at 4 Stars. Ms White needs to find a better editor for her books. This is the first book of Ms White's that I have read and I do hope that with time, they will get stronger.

The Weapon Of Prayer By Michael Taylor "The Weapon Of Prayer" by EM Bounds focuses on the importance God sets on prayer and His promise to bless prayer-released blessing.Among the points covered include:1. Prayer is more important than religious activity.2. Prayer puts God's works in God's hands and keeps it there.3. Education alone does not have the power to do God's work.4. There is a great need for people carry God with them into the secular affairs of life.5. Unbelief and prayerlessness go together.6. Christ could do nothing apart from prayer.7. Many examples in the Bible show that God responds to the prayer of His people.8. In doing God's work there is no substitute for praying.A great read for someone who needs inspiration on the importance of prayer in the Christian life.Highly recommended.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Worth Reading By Helena M. Mariades, Th.D. I liked this book for two reasons. One is that the focus was on prayer as a spiritual weapon and, two, because the author was thoughtful and careful not to add anything to the Word of God. The author writes with intensity and enthusiasms about the subject of prayer and eventually you catch his "fire". It is a classic that is worth reading and sharing with others.

Excerpt from Poetry for Poetry's Sake: An Inaugural Lecture, Delivered on June 5, 1901One who, after twenty years, is restored to the University where he was taught and first tried to teach, and who has received at the hands of his Alma Mater an honour of which he never dreamed, is tempted to speak both of himself and of her. But I remember that you have come to listen to my thoughts about a great subject, and not to my feelings about myself; and, of Oxford, who that holds this Professorship could dare to speak, when he recalls the exquisite verse in which one of his predecessors described her beauty, and the prose in which he gently touched on her illusions and protested that they were as nothing when set against her age-long warfare with the Philistine? How, again, remembering him and others, should I venture to praise my predecessors? It would be pleasant to do so, and even pleasanter to me and you if, instead of lecturing, I quoted to you some of their best passages. But I could not do this for five years. Sooner or later, my own words would have to come, and the inevitable contrast. Not to sharpen it now, I will be silent concerning them also; and will only assure you that I do not forget them, or the greatness of the honour of succeeding them, or the responsibility which it entails.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The invention of mummification enabled the ancient Egyptians to preserve the bodies not only of humans but also of animals, so that they could live forever. Mummified animals are of four different types: food offerings, pets, sacred animals, and votive offerings. For the first time, a series of studies on the different types of animal mummies, the methods of mummification, and the animal cemeteries located at sites throughout Egypt are drawn together in a definitive volume on ancient Egyptian animal mummies. Studies of these animals provide information not only about the fauna of the country, and indirectly, its climate, but also about animal domestication, veterinary practices, human nutrition, mummification technology, and the religious practices of the ancient Egyptians. A new postscript is included in this paperback edition, taking account of the latest discoveries and research.Contributors: Edda Bresciani, Aidan Dodson, Salima Ikram, Dieter Kessler, Abd el-Halim Nur el-Din, Paul Nicholson, Donald Redford, Susan Redford, Roger Lichtenberg, and Alain Zivie.

It deals with all the reasons why animals were mummified in ancient Egypt, why these mummies acccmpanied their masters into their tombs, and also the hoaxes that were sometimes perpetrated on unsuspecting pilgrims who thought that they were actually purchasing mummies of animals to offer to the gods. Salima Ikram is the leading authority on the subject of animal mummies. She has written widely on the subject, lectured on it at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and several other well-known institutes, and appears frequently on TV (I have seen her on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the National Geographic Channel, etc, etc.) She has established a room for animal mummies in the Egyptian museum in Cairo, the first of its kind in the world.

It is written by some of the top Egyptologists in this field of study and can provide huge amounts of information on all that you would want to know about this ancient practice...from the reasons behind animal mummies (why they were scared etc.), the actual process of making them and the areas where these votive offerings were placed (i.e. holy sites such as Saqqara, Tuna al-Gebel and so fourth). It's a highly academic book and perfect for all Egyptologists out there or those who immerse themselves in the study of ancient Egypt. There are a number of beautiful picture within the book as well. Overall, it's a wonderful book!

Ed Orkney returned home from flying bombers in World War II and started selling war surplus sleeping bags out of his car. Then he opened three stores that failed. Finally, in 1952, Ed started a store in a tent in Portland, Oregon, named G.I. Joe's and his vision and hard work built the business into an iconic retail chain. In this book, Ed's daughter, Janna Orkney, looks at her dad's business philosophy and practices that contributed to the success of G.I. Joe's. She writes of the store's expansion throughout Oregon and Washington, and into Idaho. She looks at two sales of the business, a name change in 2007 to Joes Sports, Outdoor and More and then the business bankruptcy and liquidation in 2009, after the company served customers for 57 years. "Growing Up With G.I. Joe's" is much more than a business history, however. Janna also takes a nostalgic look at her own growing up near the Columbia River in the mid-20th century, and recounts the story of the devastating Vanport Flood of 1948 and the inundation of the ancient tribal fishing site of Celilo Falls in 1957. Janna also shares details of how early war surplus stores in the Northwest were forerunners of general retail stores today. If you like inspiring rags-to-riches stories, this book should appeal to you. Also, 20th century history fans would be drawn to "Growing Up With G.I. Joe's," especially those who enjoy tales of the Greatest Generation. This book is also a nostalgic coming of age story. Janna Orkney describes her book as a love letter to a store and the land and people of the Pacific Northwest.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. you'll enjoy this book By Linda M. Stern If you lived in the Pacific Northwest during the 60's (and before and after) and remember G.I. Joe's stores, you'll enjoy this book. Written by the founder's daughter, Janna, it's a fun read, with lots of great photos!

This is a entertaining book loaded with history of the Pacific Northwest. But like all excellent history books, it touches us all in the struggles, fails, growth and successes. It could be set in any part of the country and those of us that grew up during this period can relate. They are currently out of stock. I was hoping to have some for gifts.

This is an inspiring story of how a WWII bomber pilot started a army surplus store out of a tent in the fifties and it grew to be a massive retail outlet. All seen through the eyes of his daughter, Janna. She describes living through those years, working as a youngster in the store, and we follow along and learn how the store grew. We also learn about the Northwest, the devastating floods and more. I loved this book and am planning to give some as gifts !

Jacob Abbott was one of the famous authors in the Abbott family during the 19th century, which also included his historian brother John. Unlike his brother, Jacob wrote kids books. Xerxes I ( 519 – 465 B.C.), also known as Xerxes the Great, ruled Persia from 486 to 465 B.C.  Xerxes is arguably most famous for his attempt to invade Greece.  At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas of Sparta fought Xerxes’ much larger army but were eventually defeated.  Although Xerxes marched further into Greece, he was forced to return to Persia due to an uprising.  The Persian forces in Greece would then be driven out the next year.

It was recommended by a friend. The book is a little slow getting into, so hang in there. I usually give a book about 80 pages. If it is not good by 80 pages it probably will never get good. This book passes the page test though. This book surprised me by the author's ability to write a ficticious story about nonfictitious characters. For the time that it was written it is superb. I recommend it to those who are looking for a good read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The puppy-dog tails were wagging in Tailspin By Kathryn Tesh I read this story in the anthology Hot In Here. I enjoyed it very much. The hero is a more "normal" man than some romance heroes. He is a lumberyard owner rather than a firefighter or EMT or military man. Those occupations automatically say "hero". However, the hero of this story is a normal man and his heroic tendencies are a bit subdued rather than flashy. He still wants to take care of those he loves; he does it without a uniform, though. The heroine rescues abused animals and this story revolves around them being introduced by a pair of Chihuahuas and falling in love along with the dogs. Big, tough Buck has a very soft spot for the abused little Chihuahua rescued and being fostered by Sadie. The dog, Tish, loves to steal his boxers or a sock or some other item of clothing. She builds a nest under the furniture and watches from it. He understands why she flinches when he reaches for her, and he is as gentle with Tish as he is with Sadie. As you can imagine, though, with a Chihuahua running around the yard waving his boxers like a flag, the story has the laughs as well as the heat for which Foster is known by her fans. The copyright is 2004, so it was written before I started grabbing each new Lori Foster book as it was released. I expected the story might be less polished and perhaps have a less interesting plotline than her newer works. I was mistaken. This is a very enjoyable story.

It's a sweet love story between a "stud" & a shy neighbor who has had a lonely life taking care of her sick mother. She works with injured dogs and they H & h meet when her dog is chasing her with a huge bug in her mouth. The two slowly become friends, lovers, and then more. A sweet, easy read romance.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tailspin by Lori Foster By Nikki Lawson This can be read as a standalone or it can be read as the 4th and last book of the Men of Courage series. Buck owns a lumberyard and puts in a lot of hours at work, because of this, he is in very good shape and due for a two week vacation. He gets signed up to watch his best friends dog, Butch the chihuahua while he and his wife go on a cruise. Sadie lives next to Buck and takes in abused animals to get them ready for a new home. She has taken care of her sick mother since she was a teenager and after she passes, Sadie is alone except for the animals she cares for. She's socially awkward and doesn't know what to do with Buck's invites to hang with him and his friends, so she refuses, coming across as cold and distant. Everything changes when she takes in Tish, a fat, bald chihuahua who brings her "gifts". After Buck rescues Sadie from one of Tish's "gifts", Buck uses Butch, who has fallen in love with Tish, as an excuse to spend time with the tender hearted Sadie. I laughed so many times during this book! Buck is the perfect type of man, he doesn't shy away from his love at first sight feelings he has for Sadie and he treats her and Tish with infinite care. Sadie has been isolated and sheltered and has no idea what to do with a man like Buck but it doesn't stop her from trying. So many good things about this book, it's hard to describe them all!

Dawn Downey’s second collection of essays is a must-read for everyone who loves down-to-earth stories with a twist of wisdom. Deeply honest and deeply personal, her observations are laced with quirky insights and self-deprecating humor. She draws inspiration from the flu, the garden, bad knees, and bad TV. She explores larger themes of loss and estrangement, while retaining a youthful outlook on the vagaries of life and aging. Here’s an author who lets us in on her fear of cows. We follow her quest to learn compassion. We share her desire for peace. Readers will journey from the mundane to the metaphysical. As she does in her spiritual memoir, Stumbling Toward the Buddha, Downey attempts to understand relationships. In Forgive Me, she reflects on the meaning of an insincere apology. (“Sorry you're inflexible. Sorry you're mad. Sorry you don't understand my position.”) In 2015 Dawn-Mobile, she compares her body to a used car. (“I can ill afford the maintenance: gym memberships, yoga classes, chiropractors, therapists. And still, it backfires.”) In Samsara, she aims her wit at envy. (“When an upscale lifestyle magazine featured my chic pal’s Los Angeles home, it turned into a sixteen-page full-color spread of my jealousy. The green-eyed monster drooled all over her Ming porcelain.”) And in Cemetery Song, she has a conversation with her mother, who died in her fifties. “You seldom laughed, and now I understand, now that I'm older than you ever got to be. Do you like my hair?”) If you've ever had a bad day, read From Dawn to Daylight for an instant pick-me-up.

From Dawn to Daylight: Essays, by Dawn Downey

About the Author Dawn Downey, an essayist, finds inspiration in everyday situations, from her pursuit of the perfect purse to her search for the meaning of life. With humor and kindness, she turns an eye on her own jealousies, guilts, and phobias. Secretly, she’d rather be a rock star, but since she can’t sing, settles for reading her stories wherever there’s a microphone and an audience. When her fingers aren’t racing across the keyboard, find her in a yoga class trying to fold into pigeon pose or on the couch watching movies with her husband, Ben Worth. Downey’s essays have been published by River Blood and Corn, The Christian Science Monitor, Shambhala Sun, Skirt! Magazine, Kansas City Voices: A Periodical of Writing and Art, and The Best Times. Her work is anthologized in Alzheimer’s Anthology of Unconditional Love: The 110,000 Missourians with Alzheimer’s; My Dad is My Hero: Tributes to the Men Who Gave Us Life, Love, and Driving Lessons; and Pooled Ink: Celebrating the 2012 NCW Contest Winners. Her writing has earned awards from the Missouri Writers Guild, Oklahoma Writers Federation, Northern Colorado Writers, and the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. She’s the author of two books, From Dawn to Daylight: Essays and Stumbling Toward the Buddha: Stories about Tripping over My Principles on the Road to Transformation. The English Constitution, by Walter Bagehot

Review "This timely new edition of Bagehot's classic study is essential reading for today's constitutional reformers and students of Britain's elective dictatorship. Gavin Phillipson's scholarly and shrewd introduction makes key links between past and present." --Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC.

From the Back Cover Chronicling the past is much easier than chronicling the present, which was exactly Walter Bagehot's project when writing The English Constitution, first published in 1873. His ambitious undertaking was to describe the British government as it actually worked during 1865 and 1866. Government as it functions is very different from the government as it is spelled out on paper. Many factors, including the mindset of the people and the habits of those already in government, affect how a country is run. Political scientists and historians will find Bagehot's commentary on the living English government and invaluable tool in understanding the politics of the era.

About the Author Walter Bagehot (1826-1877) was a British journalist who wrote at length about economics, government and literature. He studied mathematics and philosophy at University College London, and was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn. However, he settled on a life of writing, founding the National Review in 1855 and later becoming editor-in-chief of The Economist (founded by his father-in-law in 1860).

Winborne First, to the reviewer looking for the doctrine of separation of powers: you'll find it in Montequieu's "Spirit of the Laws". Also check out "The Federalist", number 51.Now then, Bagehot, like Madison, describes the operation of a modern liberal regime. The trick for founders of liberal government is to produce a government that permits the people civil liberties, but does not permit the people to abuse those liberties, or in the words of Madison, to create a government that is "democratic yet decent". Madison and the American Founders accomplish this end by so constructing the institutions of government that mens' selfish natures will be turned against each other ("ambition is made to check ambition"), rather than united in tyrannical concert.Bagehot too describes the operation of a system of government that rules by the consent of the governed, yet which does so by restraining the vices of those who ought not to rule. Bagehot argues that the English government is moderate and decent because of a division of government into the "dignified" and the "efficient" parts, and a "noble lie" about the relationship between the two. It is this noble lie that permits the government to operate without the interference of those who would turn it away from the public good. But to discover the noble lie, you'll have to read Bagehot.Warner WinborneProfessor of Political ScienceHampden-Sydney CollegeHampden-Sydney, VA

Classic study of the classic English Constitution By A Customer If this is the unaltered version of the book of the same name and same author that I read about 30 years ago, it is a classic. It describes how the classic English Constitution worked, before Britain joined the European Union. Especially it explained how it worked without being written down, largely by constitutional convention which was morally binding but (quite often) not legally binding.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. classical exposition of the British system of government By Boris Aleksandrovsky Walter Bagehot was a journalist and a social and political thinker of the middle Victorian period (1850s and 1860s). His classical work "The English Constitution" comes as a collection of polemical assays upon the structure of the British political system. Cabinet, monarchy, Houses of Commons and Lords, execution of political power, and the foundation of the systems of checks and balances are explored in the book.Throughout the book a comparison and contrast of Cabinet system and the Presidential system (a.k.a USA) is a constant theme. Bagehot does not hide it preference for the Cabinet system, which in his view is a both more dynamic and more effective. One of his main points is that direct popular election is a myth, since most of the electorate are ignorant of the nature of the political power (and moreover are forced to this ignorance by the effective uselessness of the legislative debate in the USA as opposed to the UK). Moreover, a result of the direct election is a static Presidential term of 4 years, which allows the executive branch to execute almost unchecked control of the political process. According to Bagehot, the indirect electoral system of the Commons, where people vote for the MPs and they then select the PM amongst themselves produces a more effective government, which is more responsive to the popular will since it can fall at any time due to policy disputes. A hidden secret of British success according to Bagehot is a fusion of legislative and executive powers in the Cabinet system. In the latter chapters, Bagehot exposures two forms of power - the dignified power (in the person of the monarch and the lords) and the effective power as exemplified by the Cabinet. Dignified power serves as a façade of legitimacy under which the dynamic and opportunist real effective power can subsist. He follows through to explain how each of the minister of the government exercises its power for the common goal, what are the legal powers of the monarchy and how it is exercised indirectly via control of the composition of the peerage and the power to dissolve the Commons.Bagehot's style is clear, flavorful, his knowledge of political process is profound (with a qualification of more so of British then American), his research is well done, and he is a master of dramatic tricks to keep the reader interested. I would recommend the book as both a scholarly reference, and a well presented popular case.

--Diario Clarin

In April 1942, a little over two years before the Tenth Mountain Division officially obtained its name, the U.S. Army began the unprecedented construction of a training facility for its newly acquired ski and mountain troops. Located near Pando in Colorado’s Sawatch Range, the site eventually known as Camp Hale sits at an elevation of 9,250 feet. Immense challenges in its creation and subsequent training included ongoing racial conflict, the high altitude and blustery winters. However, thanks to contributions from civilian workers and the Women’s Army Corps and support from neighboring communities, the camp trained soldiers who helped defeat the Axis powers in World War II. Veteran David R. Witte brings to life this enduring story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well written and detailed By R-Shackleford Very well researched! I found this to an invaluable addition to my collection on military history as well as my interest in the 10th Mountain Division.I may be a little biased since my father trained at Camp Hale and served in the 10th Mountain division during World War II. My mother also actually worked at the Pando military depot (at Camp Hale) for two summers during the war when not teaching school at Loma Colorado. This book should be of interest to anyone interested in World War II military history, skiing as well as general history concerning the state of Colorado. There have been other short narratives about Camp Hale, but I have yet to see any go into such depth as this book by David R. Witte. It tells of the construction of the camp and those involved in that endeavor, very important for their story to be told also... very well written!

Burkholder I was attracted to this book because as a third generation native who attended 2nd grade in Glenwoood Springs before moving outside of Dillon in the early 50s were our neighbor was Frank Byers the land owner of most of the land Camp Hale was built on. I lived with my Father in California Gulch in the early 70s. With this background I have no memory of seeing Camp Hale even though I know we drove past it many times. So I am grateful to the author for writing this book. It amazes me the things this country can accomplish in a pinch. It also demonstrates how bad we have become when we build things like the new VA hospital in Denver for billions, with a b,over budget and we built the entire camp Hale for 31 million alittle more than 1.5 million over budget. It housed 16662 soldiers,124 civilians, and 4002 stable animals, and a 676 bed hospital, all built above 9250 elevation. I would have liked to seen maps and find out more about the soldiers war stories after they left Camp Hale but I guess that is subject for another book.

When the Japanese began their brutal occupation of the Philippines in January 1942, 76,000 ill and starving Filipino and American troops tried to hold out on Bataan and Corregidor. That spring, after having been forced to surrender, most of those men were thrown into Japanese POW camps while dozens of others slipped away to organize guerrilla forces. During the three violent years of occupation that followed, Allied sympathizers in Manila smuggled supplies and information to the guerrillas and the prisoners.Theresa Kaminski's Angels of the Underground tells the story of four American women who were part of this little-known resistance movement: Gladys Savary, Claire Phillips, Yay Panlilio, and Peggy Utinsky - all incredibly adept at skirting occupation authorities to support the Allied war effort. The nature of their clandestine work meant that the truth behind their dangerous activities had to be obscured as long as the Japanese occupied the Philippines. If caught, they would be imprisoned, tortured, and executed. Throughout the Pacific War, these four women remained hidden behind a veil of deceit and subterfuge. An impressive work of scholarship grounded in archival research, FBI documents, and memoirs, Angels of the Underground illuminates the complex political dimensions of the occupied Philippines and its importance to the war effort in the Pacific. Kaminski's narrative sheds light on the Japanese-occupied city of Manila; the Bataan Death March and subsequent incarceration of American military prisoners in camps O'Donnell and Cabanatuan; and the formation of guerrilla units in the mountains of Luzon.Angels of the Underground offers the compelling tale of four ordinary American women propelled by extraordinary circumstances into acts of heroism, and makes a significant contribution to the work on women's wartime experiences. Through the lives of Gladys, Yay, Claire, and Peggy, who never wavered in their belief that it was their duty as patriotic American women to aid the Allied cause, Kaminski highlights how women have always been active participants in war, whether or not they wear a military uniform.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Real Life Heroism By MN Book Lover This is what a laymen’s history book should be—it’s well researched, but read like a story, and one you can’t help but getting swept up in. I was drawn in and quickly engrossed in the drama of each of the women the book focuses on as the Japanese invade the Philippines. World War II is always this huge and intimidating era. What this book does is make it personal in a way that you can grapple with by bringing it down to the level of these women’s lives. Lots of novels love to make-up stories about underground rebels during the war, but here are the stories of women who actually genuinely lived it!The quality of research is what makes this book so invaluable. The details about what went on in POW camps—even as far as the daily lives of the men, how they hoped for escape, how the black market worked, how men managed basic survival. This information isn’t given in overview like in a history book, but is personalized through individuals (known via personal journals and written records). Men manage to live if they’re strong enough to do labor, smart enough to work the complicated systems of bribery, and lucky enough to survive waves of dysentery.Ultimately, this book shares the story of a group of people striving for survival, but also how hard they work to help EACH OTHER survive. I think that’s what’s special about the stories in this book—or at least my take away from it. When we learn about WWII, so much of it breaks down any hope for human goodness. Systematic ethnic massacre. More systematic sexual violence of the conquering Red Army. Atrocity after atrocity. Don’t get me wrong. This book doesn’t shy away from all the horrible things that happen when the Japanese invade. Then again, I was expecting that. But Gladys and the others were always working to send as much as they could to the prisoners inside the POW camps, even the whole time knowing that could all be killed for it at any point? Gladys even says at one point, when she’s recalling back about 1942, that she doesn’t know why the Japanese didn’t just kill them all for their not so subtle smuggling things into the POW camp. It’s so crazy, but Gladys just takes it as a given—that she and everyone she can talk into helping will continue supporting and feeding the prisoners without thought for the risks to themselves. Soon she’s organizing a huge operation with the whole town to help the POWs.Heroism. It’s such a foreign concept. As in, genuine heroism. Don’t get me wrong. This book isn’t a Disney movie or historiography—soldiers are still dying by the hundreds and I felt the women always stayed very real, flaws and all. That’s why we read non-fiction. The tragedy isn’t just a plot device, and the characters aren’t stick figures—they’re real, which makes real life heroism that much more powerful.

By Terry Gaspard In Angels of the Underground, Ms. Kaminski tells the true stories of two brave American women and their experience in the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. The two main characters - Peggy Utinsky and Claire Phillips dared arrest, torture and even the threat of execution to support the Allied cause. This amazing story recounts the ways they stood up for what they believed in and actually made a difference. Highly recommended for history lovers and those who enjoy an inspiring true story about the resilience and determination of the human spirit.

Fascinating, readable book highlights little-known World War II American heroines By Kathryn Atwood This fascinating book illuminates the lives of four American women who worked in various ways against the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II and it provides reams of compelling background information as well. Kaminski is a scholar but she presents her detailed research in a thoroughly readable style. This book is for anyone wanting to know more about the Pacific War in the Philippines, especially how resistance efforts in that area were created and run.Attention book clubs: Women's History Month is coming.
