Soldier from the Wars Returning is one of the truest, most profound and readable personal accounts of the Great War. The author waited nearly fifty years before writing it, and the perspective of history enhances its value. He writes only of the battles in which he participated (including the Somme and Passchendaele), though his comments on affairs beyond his knowledge at the time, through later study and reflection, are pungent and stimulating. Among other topics, he describes the politicians, the generals, Kitchener's Army, Hore-Belisha, German gas attacks, Picardy, dug-outs, tanks, the sex-life of the soldier, scrounging. trench kits and the censoring of letters. The author saw the First World War from below, as a fighting soldier in a line regiment. In the Second World War he served as a staff officer liaising between the Army and the RAF; serving two tours at RAF Bomber Command HQ at High Wycombe. This equipped him to draw forthright comparisons between the conduct of the two wars.

Jackson If you read but one book about the British Expeditionary Force's experience in the Great War this is the one. These types of autobiography's have a reputation for bitterness. This you will not find. Having served as a staff officer in World War II the author looks back (from the late 1960s) at the events beginning just before the War until the end of 1918. Details of life in a line infantry battalion along with the greater strategy of the Western Front. A great read.

Definitive WW1 British autobiography By Mr. E This is one of two books which should be read to get a good understanding of the lives and mindsets of WW1 soldiers, the other being Ernst Junger's Storm of Steel. I would suggest, though, that these books not be the first one reads on the Great War. To understand much of what is written of in these books, read a book such as A World Undone (Meyer) or The First World War (Gilbert) prior.

It is sad to watch an era die day by day in the trenches, although the author keeps the narrative personal and honest as well as generally upbeat, and with welcomed moments of humor.

The traditional narrative of the American West tells of a frontier settled by pioneers emigrating from the east to the Pacific coast. Yet Spanish conquistadors arrived in Central America 150 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. With them came missionaries who tried to convert the Pueblo and Plains Indians to Christianity by force, a suppression of native religious beliefs that led to cultural clashes and outright war.

This is the story--fully documented--of how Spanish explorers, soldiers and men of the church pushed north from Mexico in the 1500s, seeking riches and establishing settlements from Texas to California 250 years before the influx of American settlers in the mid-1800s.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The book reminds us how deep the Spanish (and Mexican) influence is, but there isn;t much of a "collision" as in the title. By lyndonbrecht Agnew's books are worth a read, most of them dealing with the differences between popular myths about the American West, and how those differ from the real history. This is in that general sense, because the long-lasting Spanish influence is much deeper than commonly thought. The book is intended as a correction to the prevailing understanding. The focus is mainly New Mexico. The title is a bit misleading, there is very little in the sense of describing an actual collision of cultures; almost all the book is on the Spanish influence with the coming of American rule sort of an add-on. It's obvious that Agnew loves New Mexico and sees value and merit in the continuing Hispanic influence. There's a vague sense that the whole area lost something when it became part of the United States. Note however that the book does not idolize the Spanish influence--they could be just as savage towards Indian peoples as the Anglos (though harvesting souls for Christianity was a different focus than dispossessing original inhabitants for land). In addition, slavery was common until well into the American period, largely in captive Indian women and children. The Spanish influence is sometimes subtle. The horse arrived with the Spanish, and what is often thought of as typically Indian, plains Indians on horseback, really dates to around 1700. Even if accidental, such histories as that of the Comanche is profoundly influenced by the Spanish presence. The iconic Texas longhorn descends from stock brought over by the Spanish. Much of the English vocabulary describing the landscape is of Spanish origin, as are many of the names of cities, states and landscape features of the Southwest. One gripe about the title: "Old Southwest" has more than one meaning--it often is used to describe what was the Southwest before we acquired what is now the Southwest from Mexico as spoils of war, which is to say Mississippi and West Florida with such features as the Natchez Trace. The layout of the book is largely chronologic. Chapter one sets up the area and frames it for the rest of the book. Chapter 2 considers the Indian Southwest, and does so well. Chapter 3 describes the movement north from Mexico, an epic that deserves more attention. Chapter 5 discusses Indian resistance, mostly the 1680-91 Pueblo rebellion. Chapter 6 describes Spanish movement north into parts of what are now Colorado, and elsewhere. Chapter 7 discusses the expedition to California (New Mexico was settled long before the missions to California--that is what is now the state of California). Chapter 8 looks at Indian horsemen and Spanish cowboys, and reminds the reader that much of the cowboy-West thing is Spanish: the cowboy hat has Mexican Spanish roots; words such as ranch, burro, mustang, lasso, canyon, arroyo, mesa originate in Spanish and ranching has roots going back to Andalusia in Spain. Chapter 9 looks at Spanish failure, and is short and not as good as other chapters.Chapter 10 looks at trails to Santa Fe, including the couple of decades of the Santa Fe trail from St. Louis, and from Santa Fe to Mexico. Chapter 11 describes the American takeover, including a brief rebellion harshly crushed.Along the way in these chapters, there's interesting discussion of the Penitentes, of churches, of trade, relationships with Indians and a bit of social life. The photos are useful and interesting, and I wish the book had more.

For a man who grew up to become the “Bull Moose”, Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child, suffering from asthma and other maladies. But his physical weakness actually drove him to be more active, which also fostered an interest in nature. It also helped that Teddy’s family was wealthy, allowing him privileges including home school and the ability to attend Harvard, where he was an athlete and took an interest in naval affairs. After finishing at Harvard, Teddy entered politics, but it didn’t stop him from writing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, establishing himself as a professional writer and historian.  In the 1890s, it was Teddy’s turn to make history, leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War and being decorated for his service with a Medal of Honor. He parlayed his glory into the governorship of New York and then the Vice Presidency under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Teddy was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency.   By the time Roosevelt died in 1919, he was an American icon. Today, Teddy is remembered for being an explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combine into one unique reputation.

Dawson-Haggerty I just wanted to note that I share the experience of the other reviewer, who pointed out that the content is repeated over and over. I don't think this is just a binding error; the page numbers are correct (increasing) for the entire speech, but the actual speech is only around 18 pages, and then repeats for around 100 page. This item has serious problems.

My excitement turned into disappointment when I saw the content start repeating. At first I thought "certainly TR didn't repeat himself so redundantly". Then, I realized that it was the publication itself. In my copy, the speech just starts over on page 16, 26 (starts on 2nd paragraph this time), and it goes on and on it seems. There is no indication that you are rereading what has already been printed. It just goes from one paragraph to the next and the next paragraph may be a repeat of what was on page 1.I guess I will go through the hassle of packaging this up and sending it back to Amazon.

If you believe that life owes you something as opposed to working hard and earning your keep, then you must read this book. If you are a self-starter and want to "make a name for yourself" through hard work, this book/speech will get you excited. It is a must read -- even for children. Hard work does pay off!

The Cotton Kings relates a colorful economic drama with striking parallels to contemporary American economic debates. At the turn of the twentieth century, dishonest cotton brokers used bad information to lower prices on the futures market, impoverishing millions of farmers. To fight this corruption, a small group of brokers sought to control the price of cotton on unregulated exchanges in New York and New Orleans. They triumphed, cornering the world market in cotton and raising its price for years. However, the structural problems of self-regulation by market participants continued to threaten the cotton trade until eventually political pressure inspired federal regulation. In the form of the Cotton Futures Act of 1914, the federal government stamped out corruption on the exchanges, helping millions of farmers and textile manufacturers.Combining a gripping narrative with the controversial argument that markets work better when placed under federal regulation, The Cotton Kings brings to light a rarely told story that speaks directly to contemporary conflicts between free markets and regulation.

The Cotton Kings: Capitalism and Corruption in Turn-of-the-Century New York and New Orleans, by Bruce E. Baker, Barbara Hahn

Review "An instant classic. Baker and Hahn show us the gambling, fraud, and tragedy at the heart of American capitalism. In this gripping narrative we learn how a futures market worked, how one man could influence cotton prices by controlling information, and how a modern state crushed the operation, ruining thousands. This book is vital for understanding the paradoxes at the heart of the Progressive Era."-Scott Reynolds Nelson, author of A Nation of Deadbeats: An Uncommon History of America's Financial Disasters

"This is a wonderful study, exemplary of the New Financial History: rigorously attentive to market microstructure while richly contextualized with wider implications for those of us concerned with the political economy of financial markets regulation. And they've given us a rip-roaring good read to boot! With skill and imagination, the authors have brought those 'bloodless statistics and tiresome technicalities' to life."-D'Maris Coffman, University College London

"Entrepreneurs' greatest dream is to corner the market--and no market was a more tempting target in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century United States than the cotton market. In this fascinating history, Bruce Baker and Barbara Hahn tell the story of the cotton bears and bulls, and how a more assertive federal government eventually tamed their epic struggles."-Sven Beckert, author of Empire of Cotton: A Global History

His previous books include What Reconstruction Meant: Historical Memory in the American South, This Mob Will Surely Take My Life: Lynchings in the Carolinas, 1871-1947, After Slavery: Race, Labor, and Citizenship in the Reconstruction South, and The South at Work: Observations from 1904. Barbara Hahn is associate professor of history at Texas Tech University and associate editor of Technology and Culture. Baker and Hahn detail schemes and plots that ultimately and unintentionally reshaped the function, structure, and reputation of Agricultural futures. If you have any interest in agriculture as a business, this book is recommended!

Hansen Brian E. Baker and Barbara Hahn’s new book The Cotton Kings: Capitalism and Corruption in Turn of the Century New York and New Orleans shows that it is possible to put capitalism in the title and still write a good history book. I am not going to write a full review, but I will say that I like the book. I’m not sure they are considered part of the new history of capitalism; if they are, the field has taken a turn in a positive direction. Their objective is not to make any sweeping generalizations about capitalism, but to examine how it actually functioned in a particular instance. Their focus is first and foremost on understanding what happened. How did people at the cotton exchanges manipulate prices and why did it matter? In The Cotton Kings people do things. People create the rules that govern markets, they manipulate the rules of those markets, and they form networks and use courts and legislatures to pursue their goals. Sometimes they create rules that bring great benefits to a small number of people; at other times they create rules that spread the benefits more broadly.I also thought they did two interesting things in terms of the telling of the story. Historians generally struggle with the tension between telling a story so that historians in their field will appreciate it and telling a story so that others will appreciate it. Stories about business, especially those that involve finance, can be particularly difficult to tell. We can’t all have Selena Gomez get people to pay attention to explanations of financial instruments. Baker and Hahn use two devices to try to ease this tension. The first is that terms regarding markets are highlighted throughout the text and defined in a glossary at the end of the book. The approach provides the necessary information without long interruptions in the story. The second device is to place an essay on sources at the end of the book. The term essay on sources may be a bit misleading; it is not about the primary sources. The essay on sources is actually a historiographical essay. It places the book in the literature for other historians. Typically, this discussion would be at the beginning. Telling historians why the book is important. Baker and Hahn try to sell the story on its own merits as an interesting and important chapter in American history. I would have actually liked more discussion of the primary sources and how they were used, but that may just be my preference. I find historians stories about how they write history almost as interesting as the history itself.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The fix is in By David Wineberg The Cotton Kings tells the story of how cotton was traded in the USA at the turn of the century – roughly 1895 to the First World War. Colorful characters ran amuck, making fortunes for themselves. The Bulls pushed prices artificially higher and sold off to make big money, while Bears pushed prices lower, buying cheaply at the bottom to cover themselves. Three attempts to corner the whole market, and have sellers beg to buy product at any price to fulfill their contracts, occurred in 1903 and 1904. One was completely successful. An odd condition of the time was “commercial differences”, which required the settlement of contracts at the last price, not the price at the time of contract. Farmers and spinners, who needed these markets to give some stability to their very lives, were victims on the sidelines. The trader/bankers of the era were in control. Gordon Gekko’s ancestors could teach him a thing or two.The book is remarkably dry for all that. Congressional hearings alone usually provide wonderful color, amusing stupidity, and compromised outcomes. So too Supreme Court hearings and decisions. But precious little of that made it through the filters. This is a straightforward story of the rise and fall of the cotton exchanges in New York and New Orleans. There is a long and winding introduction and then just 130 pages of story. There is no buildup, no drama – just a recounting of the facts. The “Essay on Sources” at the end is a much better introduction than the introduction. It is terribly misplaced at the back. There is a far greater point than the mere machinations and manipulations by the key players. The whole concept of Efficient Markets and Rational Expectations is (once again) tossed out the window, as men prove, once again, to be more devious and greedy than the markets are capable of handling. The lesson – that the fox should not be running the henhouse – is still being debated in places like Davos, despite constant revolting revelations such as the VW Diesel Scam. Markets do not and cannot regulate themselves. The Cotton Kings shows this is nothing new, and far from being the problem, government is critical to keep the playing field at least somewhat level.David Wineberg

This is definitely a good starting point: it was written in the late 19th century by a British jurist, so it shares many of the biases of its time and era, and has a legal bent (much ado about coronation oaths, the nature of the feudal bonds, etc.) But it covers the topic well - the life cycle of the HRE. For greater depth in one volume, as well as a German 20th century scholarly perspective, I recommend Friedrich Heer's book of the same title. For even greater depth, there are a number of works that focus on time segments, by such authors as Timothy Reuter, Heinrich Fichtenau, and Horst Fuhrmann, etc.

He makes numerous references to original Latin sources to substantiate his views. Due to Bryce's lucid writing style, the reader gains a clear and concise overview of the subject without having to wade through those referred to texts.

In the tradition of wilderness junkies like Ed Abbey, Annie Dillard and even that odd old hermit, Thoreau, the author is hooked on the elemental kick that starts with an easy-going interest in birds and goes beyond to an interest in all fleeting things. Bird watching, once considered a gentle hobby, is now known to be a wilderness adventure enjoyed by rough and ready men and women of all ages. Hard-muscled, hard-bitten, bug-bitten explorers who bushwhack trackless wilds. Or ordinary folk who stalk neighborhood nature trails. Whichever kind you are, you’re out to find animals that are not only accessible, but entirely wild. They could be avian migrants newly arrived from a South American jungle to spend summer with you. Or winter vagrants that flew across a thousand-mile tundra to visit your neck of the woods. Birds, like uninhibited thoughts, go where they want. From them you can acquire a “life list” of sightings, but you can also get insights that would never have occurred if you hadn’t lost yourself in the woods for a bit to stalk things that fly in and out of your life. Throughout “Wild Notes,” the date shown on the left page indicates a true moment in time. The right page explains what happened then: what was seen, thought about and what was worth sharing with you.

Wild Notes: Observations over time about birds and other fleeting things, by Mike Lubow

From Kirkus Reviews Short pieces capture a Chicago-area bird watcher's thoughts as he looks for glimpses of life on the wing. Lubow's advertising background gives him a good instinct for pared-down prose and punchy lines that approach the directness of poetry, as in "Place names": "I’m' not in the business of naming things. Still, that doesn't stop me from remembering them. And, in a way, that's the same thing." Lubow’s knowledgeable about birds’ names, habits, colors ...but wears it lightly...Many pieces speak of...longing for the wilderness. Yet, he says, "When you leave the woods, all settled and free of words, what craziness makes you go to the keyboard and type these?" Many readers will find the tension of this contradiction relatable. Wondering why bee populations are down and cormorants are plentiful, Lubow just shrugs:.."What’s going on? That’s up to science to figure out, if it can," concluding that "change happens—get used to it." Another essay observes..."was that meadowlark the last one you’re going to see around here?" He succeeds in conveying his love for avians and the excitement of spotting them in the wild. Fast-flying...pieces that celebrate patient observation...” --“Kirkus Reviews”

About the Author Mike Lubow is a former VP Creative Director of a multi-national ad agency and founder of a mid-sized Chicago ad agency. (Actually, not mid-sized. Smallish, really, but big of heart). He’s written a popular column called “Got a Minute” for the Chicago Tribune, and has published fiction and non-fiction in a variety of national magazines from the literary to the glossy, some in Australia, New Zealand and several European countries. One of his stories was translated into four other languages. His newspaper columns have been collected in the book “In a Chicago Minute,” and ten of his published short stories have been collected in the book “Paper and Ink.” Both books are available online or through bookstores. He’s also creator of the online magazine “Two-Fisted Birdwatcher.” The author lives in the Chicago area. He’s a husband, father, grandfather, and could’ve played pro basketball if he were only a little taller.

Never looked at any bird that way before. But, hey, you gotta find a little poignancy in your life somehow. And Wild Notes is as good a way as any to get it fast and easy.

Wild Notes: Witty, Wise and Wildly Entertaining By Marc Davis "Wild Notes" by Mike Lubow is an entertaining and captivating journey into nature's realm, where man and wilderness become united. Sometimes humorous, sometimes dark, often both simultaneously, each entry in this collection of keen observations of the physical is also a subtle and simple yet profound assertion of the philosophical. Common and exotic creatures populate the pages of "Wild Notes" - birds, deer, an alto sax jazz virtuoso, each a character in a brief, Zen-like, and memorable story. "Wild Notes" is most enjoyable when read one page at a time, savoring the words and the tales they tell as if sipping Napoleon brandy. But you can also devour it voraciously, because once you start reading, it's hard to stop.

I really enjoyed how the short passages could be read on the train or bus or wherever you might find yourself with a few minutes to spare. Every page or two in this book is a stand-alone work that transports you along with the author on his trips through the woods or recollections of the same. It would be easy to say that it's about bird watching, but I found each passage much more transcendent than that. Fans of Leopold, Dillard, or even Whitman will find familiar pleasure in reading this book--but with a touch more humor. l'm looking forward to my next rereading.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the riot by inmates, hostages, and state officials *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "If we can't live as men, we sure as hell can die as men.” – A prisoner in Attica In 1971, America was still undergoing plenty of social turmoil, much of it the result of sweeping changes made via the Civil Rights Movement of the previous decade and the Vietnam War, which helped spark the counterculture. Students had been shot at Kent State by the National Guard the year before, and protests were still prominent across the country. One of the movements galvanized during this time was on behalf of the nation’s prisoners, who were often subjected to shoddy treatment in state penitentiaries and subjected to racist treatment, but that was naturally on the backburner for most Americans who remained free until the notorious Attica State Prison riot from September 9-13, 1971. The unfolding drama, during which over 2,000 prison inmates began an uprising inside the well-fortified facility and held dozens of staff hostage, transfixed America until the insurrection was violently put down and over 40 were dead. In the wake of the riot, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who had ordered the rebellion put down, accused the prisoners of committing “the cold-blood killings they had threatened from the outset,” but others saw it from a far different perspective. While the New York Times characterized it in a more evenhanded fashion and bemoaned the “mass deaths that four days of taut negotiations had sought to avert,” the prisoners were often portrayed as taking a heroic and righteous stand against the system. Perhaps the most famous representation of the riot was its commemoration in John Lennon’s “Attica State,” during which he sang, “We're all mates with Attica State.“ To this day, nearly 45 years later, the riot continues to be controversial. The Attica Prison Riot: The History and Legacy of America’s Most Famous Prison Uprising chronicles the fateful chain of events that led to the most notorious prison insurrection in American history. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Attica like never before, in no time at all.

Balanced few of both sides but I really don't see the value of the book By Modupe Hendricks The Attica of Prison Riots is an interesting story about the stupidity on both sides-the state government and the prisoners. I have read various articles about this riot, there's just no way in my mind that the prisoners were in the right. Amnesty, there was no way that was going to happen and other unreasonable demands set up the crisis. I agree that the prisoners were treated poorly before the riots and definitely afterwards the prisoners had to know that the guards are going to punish them. I do feel that the book provided a balanced view of what happened. Not sure that I can recommend this book even though I feel that it was well written. Really don't think too many people can look at this prison riot and see more than one side of the issue. I would not recommend this book

I now find I am reading them to help fill the gaps in either memory or lessons about a wide variety of events. Often they are enough to satisfy my curiosity and at others lead me to studying the subjects in more depth. I enjoy that they include some pictures or sketches to reinforce learning. This one in particular was an event that I remembered vividly; the hostage taking at Attica Prison in New York in 1971. It was good to have memories reinforced and details and officials involved edificed

This is history made interesting. Read first-person accounts from Colorado newspapers of 1904-1910 about the planning and creation of the Government High Line Canal. The canal was and is an integral part of the Grand Valley Project. This project is one of the most successful irrigation systems created by the Bureau of Reclamation in the early 1900s. The system consisting of the original diversion dam - the ‘Roller Dam’ - and its siphons, tunnels and canals is still operating today to create an oasis of farming and productivity in the Grand Valley of western Colorado. We welcome you to enjoy the exciting genesis of the project and hear the voices of the people and the politics that made it happen.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it is a great read. It should be in every library ... By Kent Brown This substantial book is fascinating, its content intriguing. It is a reflection of the past that throws light on us all and bears studying. Beside all that, it is a great read. It should be in every library in every school, city, county and more.During preparation for the centenary of the Roller Dam on the Colorado River at Cameo, the Palisade Historical Society reached out for any old pictures, articles and information regarding the early days of the dam. The search resulted in the Grand Valley Water Users Association unearthing a scrapbook of newspaper clippings contemporaneous with the preparation for the dam project and the building of the High Line Canal in the Grand Valley in Colorado (now the area of Palisade, Grand Junction and Fruita). Dr. Hugo Madden put in the hard work to recapture the articles and transfer them into book form.I have heard it said that history is the past described in present political terms. Here we have past described by those involved. And yet it seems so familiar (“Déjà vu all over again,” as Yogi Berra said”). Here are arguments over private development versus government development, land rights, water rights, personal rights, financial gain, grandiose speeches, political agendas, personal grievances, short term thinking, long term thinking and much more. There are lessons to be had here.Hugo and Gayle Madden deserve major praise for their effort. The articles, thanks to the way they were transferred from old newspaper to current paperback, are very readable, the illustrations very clear. Page 393 is “Production Notes” and outlines the various techniques and technologies the Maddens used achieve these results. This is a great roadmap for anyone who may be thinking about recovering information from old newspapers.

The Allied landings that took place in Southern France in August 1944 represented both one of the concluding elements of the wartime Mediterranean campaign and a decisive follow-on to the invasion of Normandy that had taken place two months before. It was viewed by many at the time as something of a sideshow and not a significant part of the wider war effort. Considerable controversy surrounded the planning of what was originally known as ANVIL with the senior Allied political and military leaders heatedly debating the strategic rationale for such an operation. The maritime force of escort carriers, a gun support force, minesweepers, cargo vessels and heavy landing craft was commanded by an American admiral but a third of it was supplied by the Royal Navy. On the day of the landings the British cruiser HMS Argonaut fired the most rounds of any ship in the fleet. An overwhelming superiority in airpower and a lack of a cohesive German response meant that the landings were an overwhelming success. By the third day the Allies held a 50-mile front as much as 30 miles deep, a total of some 500 square miles. At least nine important towns were in Allied hands and spearheads were ten miles from the naval base of Toulon, ten miles from Cannes. Sea borne and airborne troops had met ashore and reinforcements and supplies were being landed in large quantities. As this Naval Staff History highlights even so ""The Champagne Campaign"", as it was later termed by many of those who had been involved, required considerable planning and the contribution provided by the Royal Navy had a significant part to in the final Allied success. With this came the capture of intact French ports and the establishment of a vital logistic hub would help safeguard the Allied drive through northwestern Europe. This is the second volume in Helion’s new series, 'Naval Staff Histories of the Second World War’. The series aims to make available to a broad authorship these indispensable studies of the key operations of the war.

Excerpt from Documentary History of Dunmore's War, 1774At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Historical Society, held on October 15, 1903, Vice President (now President) William Ward Wight made the following announcement:The Sons of the American Revolution, Wisconsin Society, offers to publish for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin such MSS. belonging to the latter society as would be appropriate for the former society to assist in circulating; it being understood that the Historical Society should edit the publication, and that the expense to the Sons of the American Revolution should not exceed $500.Whereupon the Committee unanimously adopted the following resolution:Resolved, That the secretary be requested to convey to the Wisconsin Society, Sons of the American Revolution, the Wisconsin Historical Society's grateful appreciation and acceptance of the generous offer made through Mr. William Ward Wight, to supply the funds for the publication of a book under the direction of this Society. After due consideration, it was agreed between the representatives of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Wisconsin Historical Society, that the projected volume should be devoted to a selection of papers appertaining to Dunmore's War (1774), from the Draper Manuscript Collection, now the property of the Society. A combination of circumstances prevented an earlier appearance of the book; but the delay has in some measure contributed to its betterment.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great In-Depth Study By Kermit Hobbs Rather than being a narrative history, this book provides only a brief summary of events of Dunmore's War of 1774. Its real purpose and strength is its subsequent presentation of an exhaustive collection of documents, letters, and reports that complete the story. It contains a few maps that deal with very localized events. Reading the book is like being present as the events unfold and being a true eyewitness to history. The book assumes that the reader already has a general understanding of the times and the setting. Therefore, to fully grasp the information presented, I suggest that the reader first familiarize himself with the circumstances of the period from the close of the French & Indian War to the beginning of the Revolution. For the serious student of Dunmore's War and of events leading up to the Revolution, this book is a treasure.

Hedgesville, West Virginia is a metaphor of history for the United States of America. It is old. It began with a spring. This book offers a delightfully vivid portrait of the strength & trials of this small American village-town and how it contributes to the strength of the Republic as a whole. It grew with the pace of the settlement of the nation and reflected these changes by a microcosm of recorded information. When the area was animal trails and verdant brush and trees, there was located a spring of natural, ever flowing water and civilization grew around this gap in the mountain. Later Indians came and used its waters and possibly made a temporary settlement. By the 1720’s, settlers from the northern colonies who were originally from Ireland, Germany, and others, came to make their homes in the land beyond this gap in the mountains. Commerce, the westward expansion, Skinners Gap, a town, the Civil War, prosperity of the 1880s, schools, doctors, village life --- these are the major themes of the book. This archive history chronicles these things by documents, newspaper accounts, written remembrances, and specific research that is rich in local names , families, and recorded events. It may inspire others to research, write, and then share with future generations, other stories of this area and its rich, historical heritage.

He has found it interesting. A little hard to read as passages are written as they would have been back in the early days. Still, a good book purchase.
