Nothing quite like taste of death to make the heart grow fonder...This is a prequel to Alien General's Bride but it is not necessary to read this book before jumping into the novel!Urenya has been conditioned to be the best version of herself. As a healer, she is held in high regard. As the closest friend of one of the most fearsome generals in the Brion armies, she has a delicate role to play. Not only must she be wise and with hands that can heal any harm, but she must also act as a moral compass when the bloodlust of great men around her drive them wild. But where does that leave her desires? And what if she needs her own damn warrior to fight and bleed for her, instead of standing up for herself on her own all the time?Narath knows one thing - any problem can be solved with a spear. And not just a spear, but a spear in his very capable hands. Battle has always been in his blood and he could have never imagined that it would not be enough... Until laying his eyes on the sexy, curvy healer of the Triumphant. After that, he wants nothing more to use a very different spear, but with the same intent - to solve a problem. Will Narath and Urenya realize what fate has in store for them at the right time, or will war tear them apart before they can ever really taste happiness?Alien Warrior's Wife is a standalone novella with a happy ever after ending and no cliffhanger. There's plenty of steam in this book and unless you love mindblowingly hot sex, you might want to keep away... Or at least brace yourself for a hell of a ride!

It also takes up where book one left off more or less.Alien Warrior's Wife continues in the world of the Brion. I liked that we get more background about the Brion and in particular about Urenya. Her younger life and training as a healer are expanded upon. We also get a further look at Commander Diego Grothan, who is more human than we might have thought from the first book. Than there is our hero Narath. Huge, determined, yet thoughtful Narath, who will overcome all obstacles if it kills him. This story traces Urenya and her emotional turmoil of loosing her gerion. She met him, Patren, only once for less than a day when he had to go to war and during that time he was killed. She is now a healer but confused about whether she's entitled to have another gerion has in the Brion world their people only get one fated mate. She experiences feelings for Narath,, Commander Diego's friend, but it's sure if her feelings are true and if Narath could possibly return them. Urenya has a temper and well hidden feelings that get her into trouble all the time, especially during her Healer training under Elder Seleya. She passes this training and is assigned to work aboard the "Triumphant" which is captained by her childhood friend Diego Grothan and there she runs into Narath. And thus starts the story of Urenya, the gesha, and Narath, her gerion.

By Erika Daman Can you imagine that right after you meet your fated one, the one destined for you, they are killed? That is exactly what happens to Urenya. She doesn't know what to do or how to grieve, so she runs to her best friend Diego, an up and coming warrior. While there she has the opportunity to use her healing skills on a young warrior named Narath. She then leaves for her healing training, where she learns unexpected truths about her people and she excels, except her mentor questions her ability to manage her own emotions as she keeps running away. Urenya finally takes the time to grieve and move on. She is then stationed on now Commander Diego's ship, where she encounters Narath again. Sparks fly, until Narath is severely wounded in battles and right before falling unconscious reveals they are fated tone together . Will fate be so cruel to take her second fated mate? This is a great story about finding happiness even after tragedy. It is readable in one sitting and is very enjoyable. I like this series and learning the ways of the Brion warrior and people. It has some really hot scenes as well.

I still think there is a ton of fluff that takes away from the story versus adding to it. For example, we know about the Brion way, so I don't think a reminder in every chapter (sometimes several) is necessary. I also think the characters lack a certain amount of, well, character. However, I was able to actually read this installment without dreading each turn of the page waiting to get my attention caught and kept by the story and characters like the last installment. So, I'm hoping the author continues to grow and each installment will be better than the last. I was given an ARC for my honest review.****Spoiler alert****I don't understand why the h in this book had to "fight" the lifemate bond with the H when in the other book that was never mentioned as part of the life mate "ritual." Also, will the h always be threatened when bond kicks in because that might get tiresome reading and a bit predictable.

Politics are being transformed by religion, namely in China - within the next 30 years, one-third of this potential superpower could be Christian. If this religious transformation occurs, China would be one of the largest Christian nations in the world.

David Aikman, former Beijing bureau chief for Time, unveils this spiritual revolution, detailing the impending political-religious conversion of the People's Republic of China and potential overthrow of its Communist Party through Jesus in Beijing: How Christianity is Transforming and Changing the Global Balance of Power.

Most useful treatment of the church in China By George Doyle Veteran correspondent Dr. Advid Aikman has given us the fruit of many years of academic study, living in China, extensive travel, and wide-ranging interviews to produce what is possibly the most useful book on the church in China available today. He maintains the high standard set by writers such as David Adeney (China: The Church's Long March) and Tony Lambert (The Resurrection of the Chinese Church; China's Christian Millions), achieving both objectivity and appreciation in a careful balance. After an appetizer-introduction, he traces the history of Christianity in China from the earliest missionary endeavors in the Tang Dynasty to the most current developments. His wide knowledge of history enables him to place each stage of the shurch's story in its larger context.Lively writing, minute detail, arresting stories of many heroic individuals, and strategic insights make a potent combination; the book is hard to put down!We come away with a deep respect for men and women who have risked all, and suffered much, to follow Christ, especially since the Communists took over in 1949. Widespread persecution, often marked by brutal, even barbaric, torture, has brought Chinese Christians through the refining fire that could not quench their zeal.Though he concentrates upon the house churches, who form the vast majority of China's Christian millions, Aikman also offers a careful analysis of both the Protestant Three-Self Patriotic Movement and the two Roman Catholic organizations in China - one, like the TSPM, controlled by the government, the other loyal to the Vatican. He gives credit to those who have chosen to work within the confines of Communisty Party restrictions, but does not cover over the evidence for complicity in offical action against innocent believers by state-sponsored "church" leaders.Perhaps the most arresting chapter highlights the growing role of Christians among the educated elite - artists, writers, intellectuals, even Party members. Such a large number of these talented people are becoming Christians that Aikman thinks they will eventually influence both domestic and foreign policy. He could be right, for Chinese believers think that within a few years they will comprise 20 - 30% of the total population. Would such a critical mass tilt China towards America in the war on terrorism? It is possible, though the author also concedes that China could lurch back into rabid anti-Americanism, especially in a conflict over Taiwan. As he began with missionaries from the outside, so Aikman does not neglect the current role of foreigners who teach English, do business, or even evangelize and educate house churches clandestinely (though certainly not without police cognizance). Some think Aikman tends toward the optimistic, which is true, but he has reasons for his optimism, even if it needs tempering with inevitable realities to be found among Christians elsewhere, such as factions, division, abuse of authority, and neglect of family by many evangelists. But whoever said Christians were sinless? Didn't Jesus die for sinners? No book on Christians in China can be complete or perfect. Aikman could have said more, and does have his own preferences (as for the "charismatic" expression of Christianity, for example). But, all in all, he includes most of what we need to know, and leaves us with a thirst to know more."More" can be had in the books mentioned at the beginning of this review, as well as in others on sale, such as The Heavenly Man.A first-rate book.G. By Amazon Customer "Jesus in Beijing" is a quick summary of the events, leaders, and movements behind the explosion in Christianity in China over the past few decades. Aikman breaks his book up into several sections devoted to topics such as the Chinese church patriarchs, the slightly less influential but still very important church "uncles," famous Chinese Christian women, the roots of Christianity in China, how Christianity is influencing different artists, musicians, and others contributing to present-day Chinese culture, and most controversially, the debate between the government-approved churches of the Three Self Patriotic Movement and the "underground" house churches. While Aikman is clearly more favorable to the side of the house churches and their leaders, I do believe he was fair to Bishop Ding, the leader of the government's Three Self Patriotic Movement. While it can be argued that Ding has done much to advance Christian freedom in China, Ding also made statements in the past that go beyond simple respect for Chinese law... statements that were clearly pro-Communist. Ding also at times has professed a theology that is beyond liberal to a point that is simply not Christian. Ultimately, it is somewhat telling that Ding never spent a minute in prison while so many other Christians during Mao's reign, especially church leaders, were being brutally beaten and imprisoned for years at a time.Aikman sides at the end of the book with Chinese Christians that are critical of far right American groups (including some Christians) that seem only to want to exploit Chinese government abuses (which are indefensible) in order to shut off US contact and trade with China. He supports the Christians who believe that China is making progress, even if it has a long way to go. He clearly believes with these Chinese Christian moderates that the worst thing the US could do would be to intentionally antagonize and isolate the Chinese government. So Aikman does understand that there is a reactionary element running in some Christian groups, both inside and outside of China, but he also realizes that there is something suspicious about Christians that are too comfortable with what is still a totalitarian, often repressive, Chinese government as well. This book isn't the most exciting read as there are several typos, and Aikman's writing is fairly dry. But he has done his homework, he clearly cares about the people of China, both Christian and non-Christian, and he does a good job here of introducing the key players and laying out the background behind a fascinating movement occuring in a country that could very well dominate the 21st century, for good or bad, as much as America dominated the last century.

Frantzman This wonderful new book on the Christian role in China is written by a former Beijing bureau chief for Time magazine. He begins by looking at the history of the Christian church in China, its roots in Protestant and Catholic missionaries. Throughout he reveals the stories and turning points of the growth of the Chinese church. This dynamic group of men and women stood against all odds to bring the word of Christ to the people of China. The author then explores the quick growth and sad repression of Christianity. In many ways he compares it to the relationship between the Christians and Rome. Although they were suppressed they finally came to dominate the Roman empire in less then 500 years. Missionaries have been China for 400. The author forecasts a massive exponential growth of Christianity, showing how once it becomes 10% of China its rise will be unstoppable. The final conclusion of the author is that China will become a key ally of the west against militant Islam and that the commitment China have to Christianity will help renew the faith in the west, where church attendance is down dramatically. A very interesting work. The author helps to remind us that John Birch, who gave his name to the right wing society, was actually a missionary in China before being murdered by the communists.Seth J. Frantzman

Shaw I think as a whole A Duke to Remember was certainly entertaining to myself as the reader. I liked how a group of authors were able to come together with each having their individual ideas and writing style to create this title. The romance was present within the pages, the plot was easy enough to read and there were small amounts of humor to be found. So overall I found this story to be likable. When I first heard about the story I knew it was material that I wanted to read. I would say I was more curious than anything else to see if so many authors could pull off one story. Most of the time authors tend to pen their own separate stories and so when I learned that this story would only be one I had to give it a shot. Most of the authors pulled it off beautifully and few others (I will not name) needed a little more time in penning their own sections.I think it is important to understand the concept of this novella when reviewing it. This was most likely not an easy task to do to continue a story with the author's own ideas while intertwining both the story and the romance into one novella. I respect the authors for having the courage to do this and for having the talent to pen such an inviting novel. I think this novella would be something I would like to see authors and publishers doing in the near future.Lastly I would recommend this book. It is free so you have no risks in taking the time to read the book. It's well worth the effort and I will be keeping an eye on the authors in hopes of finding their next successful reads.

This absorbing volume examines the cultural role of rock art for the Apsáalooke, or Crow, people of the northern Great Plains. Their extensive rock art developed within the changing cultural life of the tribe. Individual knowledge and meaning of rock art panels, however, relies as much on collective concepts of landscape as it does on shared memories of historic Crow culture. Using this idea as a focus, this book:-introduces Plains Indian rock art of the 19th century as we know about it from its own stylistic conventions, ethnographic data, and historical accounts;-investigates the contemporary Crow discourse about rock art and its place within the cultural landscape and archaeological record;-argues that cultural concepts of space and place are fundamental to the way rock art is discussed, experienced and interpreted.

I loved most of Scarlett's Uncovering You series and was excited to see that she had come out with a new dark romance! While Alastair doesn't seem quite as twisted as Jeremy so far, this book definitely has the strong, sexy Dom, non-traditional relationship, and suspense that leaves you wanting more. Looking forward to the release of the next installment in the series!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. you will love this book By Amazon Customer I just finished The Allastair Affair book 1. I could not put it down. If you are a fan of Scarlett's other book series Uncovering you, you will love this book. Sylvain is not as dark as Jeremy and Dani seems to be somewhat in touch with her desire to be dominated. it is another great read from Scarlett Edwards

A college student was hired to catalog antiquities for three months--summer. She finds herself being preyed on by the owner of the castle. He has no plans for her to catalog a thing. Acts like she's strange for telling him the job she was hired for. I guess it's cheaper for him to have a submissive this way for three months than hire one. The girl doesn't even seem interested and it ends with him striking her for the third time the hardest. I say go home, girl. So not 50 shades of sexy.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! By Jamie Probably the best book in the series for me. the final chapter had me fully gripped and wondering what was going to happen. I sure didn't see it coming. I can't wait to find out what happens and I surely hope a few vamps get what's coming to them.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another amazing read, thank you Bella Forrest! By Abby Evans Bella Forrest’s cliffhangers are killing me! I really enjoyed this book and can't believe what Ben has had to go through. He has got the weight of the world on his shoulders, so many tough decisions need to be made and it is hard to know who he can trust. Bella keeps you guessing all the way through. I almost screamed when I got to the end and realised that I would have to wait again for the answers I so desperately need! I just hope that things turn out ok for everyone we love, I even felt sorry for characters that I previously hated which just goes to show how well Bella writes. So much happened in such a short space of time and now we are all left reeling and counting down the days until we can open book 21 and find out what happens next! Another amazing read, thank you Bella!

Telling the gripping story of the mercy ships of the Second World War, this is the first book to identify and describe in detail all the ships engaged in the repatriation of wartime diplomats, civilians, and prisoners   Behind the scenes during the Second World War, agreements were negotiated for wounded or gravely ill prisoners and “Protected Personnel”—diplomats, clergy, civilians, and alien internees—to be safely exchanged, a little-known dimension of the war. Conducted under the International Red Cross and neutral intermediaries, exchanges were arranged individually between Allied nations and the Axis belligerents. A group of 50 ships, in special livery, were uniquely engaged in this highly dangerous work, sailing through hostile waters alone and undefended, and conspicuously illuminated at night. Constantly at risk of attack by submarine and aircraft, their safety depended on the transmission and receipt of “safe passage” commands to the armed units in their paths. This book describes these special ships and details the exchange operations they took part in.

But very little is available in book form about the liners serving as hospital ships or on diplomatic missions. As an ocean liner enthusiast, I found this book fascinating and learned a great deal about lesser known work accomplished during the war time lives of both well known and more obscure passenger ships. I am very glad to add this book to my ocean liner library.

It even talks about dynamic clothing and multiple ways to add fur to clothing items. It's laid out in a clear, sensible way that makes the tutorials easy to follow. This book would make a great text for classroom use or it would be wonderful used as a stand-alone, self-taught class at home.

Public Natures: Evolutionary Infrastructures explores the potential to shape a new public realm. Essays, roundtable discussions, and selected projects by WEISS/MANFREDI identify new terms, conditions, and models that insist architecture must evolve to create more productive connections between landscape, infrastructure, and urban territories. With a foreword by Barry Bergdoll and contributions from Kenneth Frampton, Preston Scott Cohen, Felipe Correa, Keller Easterling, Paul Lewis, Hashim Sarkis, and Nader Tehrani, Public Natures is both monograph and projective manifesto and suggests a new paradigm for infrastructure that is distinctly public in nature.

Review "With a thoughtful, farsighted approach rare in most of today's architectural offices, the firm has shown that the natural and the urban are running on parallel planes and are not opposites." -Surface"Weiss/Manfredi has embraced the scribbled slate of existing infrastructure and defunct industrial past to create innovative spaces that simultaneously merge and delineate." -Architectural Digest

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A potent synthesis of work and words By e While the description of this text calls it “both monograph and projective manifesto,” certainly no small claim, it gestures toward the rather impressive scope of material it contains. The book is comprised of four primary sections. The first begins with an essay by the architects—Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi—titled “Evolutionary Infrastructures,” which leads into spreads for five of their projects, each gathered under that theme. The second section, “Terms and Conditions” is a sort of lexicon of concepts that the architects see as central to their work, enriched with commentary from a roundtable discussion of prominent academics and practitioners (Preston Scott Cohen, Felipe Correa, Keller Easterling, Paul Lewis, Hashim Sarkis, and Nader Tehrani) and moderated by Weiss, Manfredi and Justin Fowler. The third section contains spreads for five more W/M projects, prefaced by another essay from the architects, this one titled “Social Infrastructures.” And the final section, “Megaform and Public Natures,” consists of a transcribed discussion between Weiss, Manfredi, Fowler, and the historian and academic, Kenneth Frampton. With these varied and complementary sections, this text gives the reader a full and nuanced account of the collected works of Weiss/Manfredi as an ongoing intellectual project. The essays and discussions draw on a range of interesting historical and contemporary material—from 19th c. utopian visions of the city, to megastructures of the 60s, to projects from current practitioners like LTL, Field Operations, and Preston Scott Cohen. What emerges is W/M’s own conception of architectural work as ‘infrastructural,’ transgressing conventional disciplinary boundaries and operating at once within broader landscapes, the scale of the individual building, and the city at large. This particular conception of infrastructure is presented as one that seeks to synthesize a broad, and sometimes disparate, set of concerns—performing at the same time ecologically, socially, culturally, and aesthetically. About this, the authors state that “although infrastructure is often incorrectly perceived as hard and inflexible” they “see great potential for alternative strategies that structure more lateral, resilient, and pliable systems capable of hosting unpredictable uses and activities, absorbing cycles of flooding, accommodating variable traffic volumes, and generating cultural value.”While the project spreads (about 250 pages in total, dedicated to ten projects) certainly contain the glossy photographs and presentation drawings that one expects in any monograph, there is also much more. Each presented project includes ample process work (ranging from charcoal sketches to paper models), analytical drawings with overlaid diagrams explaining how the projects work, details extracted from CD sets, and photographs of construction in progress. And further, clear efforts have been made to show completed projects as thoroughly occupied, attempting to capture the ways they host “unpredictable uses.” Through all of this, projects are carefully presented so as to further develop and explain the “infrastructural” themes presented in the essays and discussions, and show how these ideas have informed and been materialized in the works themselves. It works, I think, quite clearly and effectively, helping the reader to a better understanding of both the architects' works and words. All in all, this is a thoughtfully composed and beautifully designed book, and one that offers a deep look into an impressive body of work by Weiss/Manfredi. I highly recommend it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Love the book, love the work! By Andrea I’ve been a fan of Weiss/Manfredi for many years, especially the idea that their practice is not just architecture but landscape architecture and urbanism. The partners in the firm don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk. (Though the thoughtful and well-argued essays in the book show that they talk the talk, too.)The list of projects includes all of the recent buildings that have opened to acclaim: the Olympic Sculpture Park, built on a reclaimed industrial site in Seattle; the park at Hunter’s Point, New York, poised on the edge of the East River; the Diana Center at Barnard College, New York, with a series of double-height spaces that climb through the building; and the Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania, brilliant orange at the base and climbing high into the air.A word on the book itself: It’s so nice to have a book that isn’t awkward to look at and read. It’s big and chunky, but not bulky or heavy. The cover is gorgeous—an image of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (full of people!) printed on a cloth binding. Such a welcome change from the typical high-gloss book jacket with unpopulated building under a blinding blue sky. Imagine, architecture that actually enjoys an engagement with its audience!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Tremendous book! By P. Hoang This book is unique in that it succeeds in being both inclusive and expansive. It is inclusive in the depth and breadth of the projects by Weiss-Manfredi—in addition to the photographs, the entirety of their design process is described through conceptual sketches, analytical diagrams, architectural drawings and technical details. However, it is the expansive quality of the book that is most interesting because it seems to embody their architectural philosophy. The work of Weiss-Manfredi escapes easy categorization. They move with seeming ease between the disciplinary boundaries of architecture, landscape and infrastructure but also between the rigid design methodologies associated with form, program and ecology. The book is well organized into essays by the authors, rich documentation of their projects and a central section called “Terms and Conditions.” The essays and projects on their own are both thoughtful and provocative. However, the “Terms and Conditions” section highlights the expansive nature of their design thinking. It manifests a conversation between Marion Weiss, Michael Manfredi and a group of contributing architects and historians. This unique discussion is between the contributors’ interpretations of terms from modern architecture history, specifically the mega-form projects of late modernism. The conversation includes images of the contributors’ work, which is both uncommon as well as essential to understanding the important place that Weiss-Manfredi’s genre defying work occupies. This book is not your typical introspective architectural monograph. As with their projects, the book is a call for all architects to do more to reconnect the different strands of our built environment together and to our environments.

The Duke’s Mistress is the first story in Carole Mortimer’s Regency Unlaced series. Hot and steamy tales of Regency heroes and heroines, with a dangerous dash of romantic suspense, as only Carole can write them! Carole has written over 200 books, in contemporary romance and Regency. She is the Recipient of the 2015 Romance Writers of America’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a USA Today Bestselling author. Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Romance Author. 2014 Romantic Times Pioneer of Romance. Was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, for her “outstanding service to literature”. Author's Note: Please be aware that the stories in the Regency Unlaced Series are more explicit in language and sexual content than my other books. The young widow Lady Dorothea Fitzroy is bored with her life. Most especially so with her role as mistress of her brother’s household, and the endless round of society engagements this forces her to endure. What Thea so badly needs is a secret and passionate lover, to become mistress of another kind entirely, and so add excitement and spice into her humdrum life. But where is she to find this handsome and inexhaustible gentleman? Julian Remington, the arrogant and haughty 17th Duke of Blackmoor has no interest in finding a mistress for his bedroom or his home. He’s jaded, cynical, and distrustful when it comes to women. One woman, a woman from his past, has caused too much grief in his life for him to ever trust another. Thea and Julian are about to be caught up in a passion for each other that blazes so fiercely, and so out of control, it is beyond the power of either of them to resist. The Duke’s Mistress is the story of an arrogant duke and an adventurous young widow, caught up in their insatiable desire for each other, the vengeful woman who would like nothing better than to see Blackmoor suffer as she has suffered, and believes Thea Fitzroy to be the means by which she will achieve it. By rushie86 My first for this writer, and based on the review, i expected heavily-written sex scenes. What i did not expect was to be enticed by the intrigue in the storyline. I could believe that strong need for revenge. I certainly could believe the strong sense of protectiveness Julian has over Thea. The formula worked :)

Sexy and Exciting Novella to Kick Off New Series By Sheila M "Thea desired a lover."FINAL DECISION: Short, sexy and also containing a suspense story, there is a lot in this short novella, but the characters are well-drawn and make this one worth reading.THE STORY: Lady Dorothea Fitzroy, a young widow, is bored with her staid life living with her brother. She wants to find a lover and fulfill the sexual desires that her marriage left unfulfilled. Julian Remington, Duke of Blackmoor, walks into Thea's life and while she desires him, she believes that she has nothing to attract such a man. Brought together by the marriage of Julian's daughter and Thea's nephew, the two begin a sexual dance that is threatened by a secret from Julian's past. Someone wants to make sure that Julian pays for what happened in the past and will use anyone--including Thea to get revenge.OPINION: This is one sexy little treat between Julian and Thea. The two are clearly meant for one another and the only thing keeping them apart is the danger from Julian's past. I liked how their relationship developed and how there was a lot packed into this short book. While the identity of the threat is quickly known, there is still drama. I also liked that Thea is a woman who is ready to take control of her own life and own pleasures. These are likeable characters and I can't wait to read more in the series.WORTH MENTIONING: This book introduces the series and other characters from future book make small appearances, but this novella focuses on the main characters rather than trying to introduce everyone in the series.CONNECTED BOOKS: THE DUKE'S MISTRESS is the first book in the Regency Unlaced series.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.

You will find out more as the book progresses. Lady Dorothea Fitzroy is a widow of an older man. She wants passion and a lover to give her what she always longed for sexually. Julian enters her life as his daughter is marrying her nephew. She is attracted to him and she to him sexually on the first meeting. He has only used women for sex because of a relationship that happened years ago.He really treats Thea as a whore at first in his love making. The mystery weaves along with the romance in the story is Thea any safer than Julian from this mysterious woman. Thea is in love with Julian but is he is it to be only a sexual episode or a HEA. I read the story in one sitting to find out. I had read Carole Mortimer before but this story is a sensuous one so the sex haters in a book this is not for you. I am planning on continuing the series as the books become available.

“Marry me.” “What?” I stared back at him, unblinking. He moved closer, taking my face in his hands. “I love you, Evie. I look into the future, and the only thing I see clearly is you. Marry me.” What’s an eighteen-year-old girl who was madly in love with her nineteen-year-old boyfriend say? Of course, I said yes. Twenty-four hours later, I married Adam Gunner at a Vegas chapel to the sounds of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. Not the best omen. I get that now. Then, exactly one week later, I left him. I walked out, leaving behind my wedding ring, annulment papers, and my heart, and he never knew why. I haven’t seen him since. Not in ten long years. Now, he’s here, standing before me. Looking at me with nothing but hurt and hatred in his eyes, he wants answers. Answers I can’t give.

78 of 90 people found the following review helpful. done too many times before & drives me crazy - SPOILERS By romance4ever SPOILERS INCLUDED BELOWThis storyline is not original It has been done too many times before and done better. Hero and heroine meet. Fall in love and enter into a committed relationship. Some bad person does something or something happens that makes the heroine feel like she has no choice but to run away. It is always not true. In all these scenarios if the hero had just been told then there would be no need to run away. They could have come up with a solution together because people are not generally idiots but then again, if they did, there would be no story. Hero is mad and sad. Feels compelled to do lot of other women during their separation to feel better while she pines & lives on memories of their love alone to keep her company. She stays away and later runs into the hero by accident. Hero still mad. Heroine still will not tell but she cannot hurt him. Like she did not already by leaving him. He is angry that he wants her again because she is coldhearted or else she would not have left him. Smexes her because he cannot help it but treats her with coldness because he is still mad. She finally tells him. He eventually forgives her and stops treating her badly. The story ends with HEA. Here it ends in divorce and a promise of remarriage, not a good ending to me.There is something that some author's do in this scenerio that irritates me beyond belief and can impact my enjoyment of the story. Unfortunately that happened here. It is when a hero and heroine have been been in a relationship, break up and the hero has smex OW and the heroine stays celibate. Totally drives me up a tree and I have never understood why another woman would write her character that way. Based on the author's other books I read, I never expected that this author would have her heroine written in this sexist way but I was wrong. It makes it worse when it is for long periods of time. Here, Evie never slept with another man, much less had a boyfriend over a 10 year period. Adam was her one and only lover. Seriously? She became asexual. Are women not suppose to like or need smex? Is it mandatory for a woman to show that she loves someone that she has to go into a deep freeze, never even kissing someone else or getting any type of affection from another man? By the same token, does the hero have to became a manh*e, like Adam did, sleeping with any female that moved, especially if she looked like the heroine? Are we suppose to feel sorry for him needing one night stands? The excuse to is always too that the hero is trying to get over the heroine. It does not matter usually if she left him or he left her. It is always the heroine's fault that he needs OW beneath him to feel better. Also it is also sexist. Since they are men, the heroes need sexy times whereas the heroines don't.What is worse in this case is that they were married during the entire separation because he did not sign and file divorce papers like Evie asked and expected him too Therefore he knew that he was committing infidelity where she had no clue they were still married yet was never with anyone else.

By Zili Robins 4 - 4.5 StarsI'm a big Samantha Towle fan-girl and I'm a bit of a sucker for a second chance romance, so this was always going to be winner for me. The story is emotional and intense. We meet Adam and Evie years after they were supposed to get their HEA. They're living apart and are both miserable. Even ten years later Adam still doesn't know why Evie left him after their wedding. Similarly Evie hasn't been able to forget her first love and has been miserable without him.On first glance you could be forgiven for thinking the plot follows the classic 'rich playboy meets poor good girl' narrative, but it's really about so much more. There's drama, heartbreak and loss, but the story is also full of romance, friendship, sexy times and love.I have to admit I did have my suspicions about the big reveal, but it didn't lessen my enjoyment in reading about the events, and getting some answers from Evie. I also enjoyed the time hops. This surprised me as I often find them irritating, but Towle incorporates the flashbacks so seamlessly into the plot that I really liked them. The moment when Evie and Adam meet again is intense and kinda stressful, but Holy chemistry batman! There are lots of naughty scenes, so this ones not for younger readers.I liked Adam and even though he was very different from Towle's ultimate BBF creation, the dream that is Jake Wethers, I loved his dedication, swagger and charm. Evie is sweet and thoughtful but she's not a pushover. Without dwelling too much on Towle's other books, I was pleased to see Evie wasn't Tru or Andi 2.0!I'd love to read more about Casey or Max please Samantha...I received a review copy.

COME ON, that was HOT, even in its frustrating, pull-my-hair-and-eat-my-eyelashes kind of way. But it was HOT because the hero was glorious and there was that sizzling chemistry.I hate having to be negative. Ugh, it pains me to be negative, but....I have to. The blurb was so alluring. The five stars were tempting me to buy this book. "Come on, Dreamer," they chanted, "purchase it! Revved, right? Purchase.IT.NOW!!!!" and against my better judgment, and my pitiful bank account balance after purchasing a thousand other books this very week, I purchased it.Again, usually, I like this author.Usually.Revved. Come on. Revved. But this...*Cringe* This was so underwhelming. Imagine being in front of an ice cream parlour, and you're staring at all the flavours, but suddenly the owner comes and says, "No flavours, Dreamer. Just vanilla.""But...Vanilla is Vanilla, ice cream man. I've had it too many times. Give me something else. Something different.""No," Ice cream man retorts. "Just Vanilla. Vanilla or GTFO."This was.... Vanilla, and I wanted a taste of something else, something different. It didn't even start off well, and that was immediate red flags. Like, legit, the passages seemed repetitive. I kept thinking, "yeah, I know that already because you MENTIONED it on the PREVIOUS PAGE OR TWO." Maybe the target audience was for little Dory's who forget every five minutes, or something. But I'm not Dory. .I'm Marlon, the freaking fish that gets aggravated at repetition. The main issue I had was the POV of the male. He sounded like a female. The voice seemed forced, like, "yeah, I'm a man, I like chicks, and I like sticking my poker inside their holes, arrrghh yeah, total man, total shmex machine, yarrr...but man, this chick, I never had to ask a girl out, y'know? like, arghh man, she's not falling for my charms" ............................. It just didn't work for me. Not at all.Adam was no Carrick. Not that I want a duplicate character. Not at all. But I wanted someone equally as hot. I know this author is wonderful. She has it in her to deliver mouth watering people because...Revved, right? Sighhh. And the way they met again in the first 10 percent. I didn't feel ANYTHING. Terrible execution. Word to the author, it would have been better if you had the build up between the couple in the beginning. Instead of this back and forth past and present BS, why not execute the past first so we can feel for the characters first? Imagine the first part ending with her leaving him. I mean, ZOMG that would have been heart wrenching. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the past moments, but the back and forth didn't work. I needed consistency. Instead, the characters felt hollow to me. Right from the get-go, it was hollow, like I was staring at paper people.I skimmed the book straight after realizing I was not going to emotionally connect with people who just didn't feel authentic. I don't even remember their names anymore. I feel like I've read this a hundred times before.Let me just get to the point. You want predictable? You want a heroine who is dumb as a doorknob for walking away from her husband for the most ridiculous reason? (And on that note, for rejecting his help with the sick sister thing... I mean, when it comes to providing the best treatment possible, would you really care about being a charity case even though you know you aren't because this man loves you. You'd take that treatment by the balls and say, "thank you!!!!")You want an overdone male who has played the mambo mattress with countless women to the moon and back and probably has a thousand STDs? (even though he said he was clean, which always ruins a moment when you're reading a book and there is heat and passion and before poker shoves through hole, they have the std talk... mood kill)If it's check, check, check, then have a freaking awesome ball with "When I was Yours"....For me? I was never yours.Ever.E.V.E.R.Everrrrrrrrr.Unless you're Carrick.Because Revved, right?I'll still read more Towle because I adore her writing.There.Done.Bye.

Do you love mystery stories, such as the Sherlock Holmes stories and those of Edgar Allan Poe and Agatha Christie? Do you ever yearn to be a good writer of mysteries? Carolyn Wells was a prolific author of mystery novels. In this detailed book, she teaches the history, types, principles, devices, plots, and structures of mystery writings. She gives advice to would-be authors of this genre, including ghost and riddle stories as well as detective and crime mysteries. This authoritative work begins with a justification of mystery as a legitimate literary art form, with numerous quotations from authorities. Then proceeding systematically through her topics, she explains and illustrates the mystery-writing craft with excerpts from mystery works and quotations of literary critics and notable authors. The lover of mystery will find many authors and stories cited and excerpted in this book, which would be a good resource for finding more material to satisfy the reader's thirst for the genre. Aspiring authors will find insights through the critical eyes of this successful mystery author and of the many authors whom she quotes. This is virtually a miniature course in creative writing of the mystery story.

There are so many chapters packed with potentially good information and no way to get to them easily. A table of contents is included but doesn't include any links to jump to the relevant chapters. You just have to guess the location repeatedly to try and get to the point you want. There are no page numbers either which isn't unusual for an ebook but would help since the TOC is not linked. The book has too much potential information in it and it's simply not accessable in an ebook format unless you just love location guessing or endlessly flipping pages forward/backward. I don't know how good the content of the whole book is but the book is impossible to navigate. If the TOC became linked it would probably be great as an ebook but sadly it's not the case. Whoever put this out clearly just dumped a text file into the Amazon system without any thoughts to making it a reader friendly experience. I returned it for a refund.

Interesting look back at early mysteries By Librarian Quite a few mystery novels by Carolyn Wells are currently available in the Kindle Store, and while she is not up there with the greats of that genre, her mysteries are still very entertaining; I have certainly enjoyed all those I have thus far read. This book, however, is nonfiction. It begins with a relatively disjointed discussion of topics related to human curiosity, the history of the mystery story in myth and legend, mystery stories as literature, and elements of mystery in the works of early non-mystery writers. Wells then treats ghost stories and riddle stories at some length. These preliminary chapters are interesting and a foundational necessity, but she doesn't hit her stride until she finally arrives at the true detective story and Edgar Allan Poe. To me, those earlier chapters read as if the author felt obligated to include them, but really just wanted to get past them to get to "the good stuff." (Or maybe, it was just my own impatience to get there.)Nevertheless, Carolyn Wells finally gets to Poe and subsequently to authors of the "modern" era (the early 1900's, when this book was written). She does this in a series of chapters each exploring myriad mystery-related topics (some lightly, others in detail, and many overlaping and repetitive). She cites numerous works by Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jacques Futrelle, Emile Gaboriau, Maurice Leblanc, Gaston Leroux, Arthur B. Reeve, Anna Katharine Green and other noted mystery writers, often discussing plot elements and providing lengthy excerpts from their writing. Since many, if not most, of the works to which she refers are now in the public domain, this becomes a very handy list of titles for lovers of such (now) old-fashioned mysteries to seek to add to their Kindles. (Comprehensive and inexpensive collections can be inexpensively purchased in the Kindle Store for many of these authors, and a great many of their individual novels are available as public domain freebies.) But be aware that she often reveals plot outcomes, culprits, and other such spoilers in her discussions of given topics. You may wish to be on the lookout for such revelations in order to skip them so as not to ruin your future reading pleasure of those works. When Wells shifts from DESCRIBING what has hitherto been done, to PRESCRIBING what a mystery writer should and should not do, the book shows its age and may even tend to provoke some unintended mirth (for instance, some of her comments about women). Indeed, many of the things she strongly says should NOT be done when writing a mystery, have since been done quite successfully. To her credit, however, she recognizes exceptions even in her own day which were deliberately done for dramatic effect by skilled writers, but she still warns against their general use. Ironically, her own faithful adherence to the advice and standards she provides in this book resulted in her works being popularly-received (and still enjoyable) but artistically restrained and less than stellar; the "sameness" one perceives in reading them is largely due to the very "formula" she followed and here recommends to others.Wells presents her views relative to the collective tastes and sensibilities of the reading audience of her day, but obviously much has changed since then. It is for this reason the book, overall, exudes a certain quaintness, not to mention an upperclass, cultural bias. But even though a document strongly reflective of its time, it is not without value to today's budding writers of mysteries so long as Wells' precepts are regarded as suggestions, some better than others, some appropriate and some not, and not a few worthwhile more in the breach than in the observance. In other words, like all advice, it is to be taken cautiously and with a grain of salt.In conclusion, as a practical manual for how to write today's modern mysteries (both novels and short stories), this book is largely outdated (though, as previously noted, not totally without merit to would-be, but critically discerning, mystery-writers). But while no longer of especial value as a "how-to" book, it is definitely worth reading as an introduction to early mystery writers, their techniques and their works. On that basis I can heartily recommend it. Several editions are currently offered in the Kindle Store at prices as low as $1.75, and it also appears in the otherwise less than stellar 2nd Carolyn Wells Megapack from Wildside (for only $.99), but it may also be obtained online at mnybks.net for free. For a fabulous collection of her mysteries consider the FIRST Carolyn Wells Megapack (for $.99).

Want to write mysteries. . .better read this 1913 gem By Charles Bush This was written at a time when writers were thorough, as opposed to many of the current books on writing slammed out to make a buck off the backs of aspiring fictioneers.True you need a bit of a vocabulary to read it, but the research into the mystery makes it worth the read.Among other things, the book discusses three main categories of mystery: 1. Ghost stories; 2. Riddles which must be solved without cheating; and 3. Detective stories, which are solved by a process of inquiry and deduction. The volume offers a great history on the development of the mystery from Edgar Allan Poe and Lecoq, through Conan Doyle and Holmes. This book is definitely worth reading, and, the knowledge offered is not obselete at all. Just make sure you have a note pad handy to record the nitty gritty found in each chapter. I use OneNote. Recommended.Hampton Bush, author of Brothers of the Light, a science-fiction thriller-love story
