It was a story so bizarre it defied belief: in April 1974, twenty-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst robbed a San Francisco bank in the company of members of the Symbionese Liberation Army—who had kidnapped her a mere nine weeks earlier. But the robbery—and the spectacular 1976 trial that ended with Hearst’s criminal conviction—seemed oddly appropriate to the troubled mood of the nation, an instant exemplar of a turbulent era. With Patty’s Got a Gun, the first substantial reconsideration of Patty Hearst’s story in more than twenty-five years, William Graebner vividly re-creates the atmosphere of uncertainty and frustration of mid-1970s America. Drawing on copious media accounts of the robbery and trial—as well as cultural artifacts from glam rock to Invasion of the Body Snatchers—Graebner paints a compelling portrait of a nation confused and frightened by the upheavals of 1960s liberalism and beginning to tip over into what would become Reagan-era conservatism, with its invocations of individual responsibility and the heroic. Trapped in the middle of that shift, the affectless, zombielike, “brainwashed” Patty Hearst was a ready-made symbol of all that seemed to have gone wrong with the sixties—the inevitable result, some said, of rampant permissiveness, feckless elitism, the loss of moral clarity, and feminism run amok. By offering a fresh look at Patty Hearst and her trial—for the first time free from the agendas of the day, yet set fully in their cultural context—Patty’s Got a Gun delivers a nuanced portrait of both an unforgettable moment and an entire era, one whose repercussions continue to be felt today.

Patty's Got a Gun: Patricia Hearst in 1970s America, by William Graebner

From School Library Journal In this work, Graebner (The Age of Doubt: American Thought and Culture in the 1940s) reconsiders the kidnapping and trial of heiress Patricia Hearst in the context of psychiatry, media, politics, and popular culture in the 1970s. The book is divided into two parts: the first half is a detailed recitation of the kidnapping of Hearst by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army, or SLA (an American self-styled urban guerrilla warfare group active in the 1970s); the crimes committed by her; and her trial and conviction. In the second part, titled "Reading Patty Hearst," the author concedes that no one knows why Hearst joined her SLA captors. He cites society's dismay with the chaos of the Nixon administration, the decline of the family, and the survival culture of the day. Patty's Got a Gun is a well-written, sophisticated speculation of why Hearst was convicted both by the jury and in the court of public opinion at the onset of the Reagan era. Readers looking for a livelier, more personal account should read Shana Alexander's Anyone's Daughter: The Times and Trials of Patty Hearst. Review "I enjoyed this 'retrospective essay' on the remarkable story of Patty Hearst. . . . Graebner's essay offers far more than narrative. It contextualises a story that ‘shocked the nation’ in its historical context, midway between the permissive radicalism of the 1960s and a backlash that anticipated the new conservatism of the Reagan era. . . . Graebner combines erudition and scholarship with a sense of humour." (Jill Radford Times Higher Education)"What makes the book worth reading is not so much the first half, a compelling enough account of Ms. Hearst's kidnapping and subsequent time in the headlines, as the second half: an attempt to put the Hearst affair in the context of an America struggling to emerge from the Vietnam quagmire and the ignominy of Watergate." (Economist)“In that anxious interval between the twilight of the Sixties and the dawn of Ronald Reagan’s ‘Morning in America,’ no story made the nation as uneasy as the crazy and ambiguous ordeal of Patty Hearst. William Graebner sheds new light on that most troubling story, and thereby helps us understand two nations: the terrified America that watched it all unfold, and the more assured and brutal place that it would soon become.” (Mark Crispin Miller, author of The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder)“In an era traumatized by defeat in Vietnam, betrayal in Washington, stagflation, and shockingly violent crimes, the saga of Patty Hearst—kidnapped heiress turned carbine-toting bankrobber—was perhaps the most shocking tale of all. William Graebner’s rich retelling uses Hearst’s story to probe one of the central preoccupations of the Seventies: the nature of personal identity. What happened to Hearst fascinated, and continues to fascinate, because it raised the question of what any of us might become in the face of extraordinary circumstances.” (Thomas Hine, author The Great Funk: Falling Apart and Coming Together (on a Shag Rug) in the Seventies)“William Graebner’s brilliant analysis of America’s struggles over the meaning of Patty Hearst gives us not only new perspectives on the 1970s, on Americans’ fundamental understandings of their world in a bicentennial year that offered little to celebrate, but also on the longing for heroism and the desire for belief in free will that Graebner believes structured the rise of Reagan-era conservatism. This is a masterful work of cultural history.” (Beth Bailey, author of From Front Porch to Back Seat: Courtship in Twentieth-Century America)“In this work, Graebner reconsiders the kidnapping and trial of heiress Patricia Hearst in the context of psychiatry, media, politics, and popular culture in the 1970s. The book is divided into two parts: the first half is a detailed recitation of the kidnapping of Hearst by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army, or SLA (an American self-styled urban guerrilla warfare group active in the 1970s); the crimes committed by her; and her trial and conviction. In the second part, titled ‘Reading Patty Hearst,’ the author concedes that no one knows why Hearst joined her SLA captors. Patty’s Got a Gun is a well-written, sophisticated speculation of why Hearst was convicted both by the jury and in the court of public opinion at the onset of the Reagan era.”--Library Journal (Library Journal)"Graebner conducts an intellectual history tour de force that will enrich the scholarship of this period, providing a look into a discrete but revealing episode that exposes the era's most fervent concerns." (Bradford Martin Journal of American History)"The author provides a compelling look at the 1974 kidnapping. . . . arguing that the entire episode reflected the anxieties of an increasingly anxious nation." (Choice)

About the Author William Graebner is the author of many books, including The Age of Doubt: American Thought and Culture in the 1940s and Coming of Age in Buffalo: Youth and Authority in the Postwar Era.

Peterson The kidnapping of Patty Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army and her (apparent) conversion to their social mayhem undoubtedly fascinated many Americans who now are in their 50's and 60's. It obviously continues to intrigue me enough to prompt me, a third of a century later, to buy and read this book with the expectation that it would give me a comprehensive and responsible historical account of the Patty Hearst episode. But PATTY'S GOT A GUN is not nearly as detailed and comprehensive a history as I desired or expected. Instead, much of the book is devoted to arguing for the place of the episode as one of exceptional significance in the "cultural history" of the United States. This is a highly subjective, and suspect, exercise. By the time Graebner indirectly states, near the end of the book, that the Patty Hearst trial was a pivotal event in American cultural history on a par with the Scopes monkey trial, I have come to the conclusion that he has assumed and tendentiously asserted his thesis rather than proving or demonstrating it in any meaningful, rigorous way.Graebner's writing style is choppy and wearisome. And his trendy word usage -- for example, "foreground" is used as a verb at least four times -- is grating to this reader. All in all, PATTY'S GOT A GUN was rather disappointing.

The book tells the still amazing story of Patty's abduction, ordeal, and trial. But more than that, the author then gives a compelling analysis of people's reactions to Patty's story in terms of the cultural history of the time. His insights into the psychology of identity are sophisticated, but these sections nevertheless read like a novel. Graebner has an amazing ability to make the cultural analysis just as exciting as the kidnapping. I highly recommend it.

Miriani If you're looking for your standard retelling of the Patty Hearst saga, look no further than the discount aisle at your local Borders. If, however, you're like me and you want more than just a historical rehash and a few mug shots, check out Patty's Got a Gun. I've always had an interest in Patty Hearst and what she went through, but I've never come close to truly comprehending what her story meant until reading Graebner's book. The author's not only a master storyteller, but an astute interpreter who views the kidnapped heiress turned criminal through the eyes of a post-Vietnam America. Referencing works as varied as Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Graebner sheds new light not only on the events surrounding Patty Hearst, but on the identity of our country in the tumultuous 70s.

I love reading his sermons devotionally. I know these sermons are included in the "Expositions" series by MacLaren, but I actually prefer reading them in this format due to the variety of subjects.

Sedlmayer, author of the Talon book series A copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.Wow, what a journey. I never have read a book with such information and in side.A journey with Tom, the ex-intelligent officer and Faith, his friend through history of time. Through the British and Scottish royals to imperial families, to big cruises and boats.Eliza has a great knowledge of the past.It is well written. I couldn't stop reading, I had to go on until finish.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A really amazing and well told story! By C. Brant I loved this book from beginning to end. Eliza really builds the characters in this story in such a way that you are really pulled into the story itself. It follows an ex intelligence officer Tom Shanks's who is in a tough situation. It really makes me think about what I would do if I were in his situation. I don't want to spoil the book, but it really isn't easy to know what you would do if you were to swap places with Tom. It is told so well that I really felt like I was Tom Shanks.

A Family In Crisis-Healing By VicG Patricia Yager Delagrange in her new book, "Moon Over Alcatraz" published by Black Hawk/Ravenswood Publishing introduces us to Brandy Chambers. From the back cover: Brandy Chambers was looking forward to the birth of her first child. She and Weston move from San Francisco to the small town of Alameda to start a family, she’s writing her second book, and Weston has a fantastic job working on the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge project. Having this baby would make her already-wonderful life perfect. But when the baby dies after a difficult birth, Brandy’s perfect life blows up in her face. Stricken with grief, she and Weston pull apart. This new distance leads them both to disaster. Not until a chance encounter with her high school friend, Edward Barnes, does Brandy pull herself together. Brandy and Weston agree to recommit to each other, striving to forgive infidelity and recreate their previous existence.Everything is once again going according to plan—until Brandy discovers she’s pregnant. While she struggles to cope with this new obstacle, Edward Barnes returns to town and discovers she’s having a baby, while Weston is torn between his love for his wife and his anger at her betrayal. Can Brandy manage to keep her marriage to Weston together? Will Edward be a part of Brandy’s life if she and Weston separate?Ms. Delagrange has given us a pulls no punches look at a woman in crisis and, subsequently, a family in crisis. Brandy, Weston and Edward are very interesting characters and we get drawn into their world. When drama happens to them, and drama does happen, we are affected emotionally because they mean something to us. And I think there is a reason why Ms. Delagrange uses Alcatraz in the title rather than Alameda but I also think it would be more fun if you read the book and then decide if I am correct or not. I am glad I found this talented author and am looking forward to more from Ms. Delagrange.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Pump Up Your Book. A stunning history of Irish women's migration By Emily Dickinson This superb book presents women's stories from three waves of emigration from Ireland to America, stories that carry each woman's distinctive voice and experience. The author contextualizes the stories in relation to a particular place and time in history, in the 1920s, 1950s and 1980s, with a view to changes in social, economic and political trends in Ireland that affect women in particular. It is, simply, a very readable account of lived experiences, as well as a compelling, stunning portrait of Irish emigration. This gem of a book captures a history that could easily been overlooked. It is a timely and telling book in a time of global migration.

If you liked Brooklyn, you'll love Models for Movers By Amazon Customer After seeing the movie Brooklyn with Saoirse Ronan, I was curious to learn more about the different experiences Irish women had in the past when they immigrated to the States. This book proved a wonderful way to immerse myself in their authentic stories, all of which were heartfelt, insightful, and strengthened the connection I feel to my own Irish heritage. As a proud Irish American, the stories in this collection not only taught me a lot about the history of the Irish diaspora from a female perspective, but they also shed light on the impact that these women had on the country they came to call home.

It is well written, clearly argued and the individual stories of the women who left Ireland for the USA in 1920s, 1950s and 1980s come to the fore. And what stories: of loss and love and life gained in a new country. It is fascinating to see how women coped with the environment in the USA as it changed over the years. The insights the author gives on the Ireland they were leaving is devastatingly accurate. This is an important book. If you have an interest in the relationship between Ireland and the USA or the waves of emigration from Ireland to the USA, you should read this book. Make sure you purchase the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary edition (published July 2015), it has been extensively updated.

Pharaonic Egypt at the height of her power forms the magnificent backdrop for the story of Tutankhamun's short but eventful life, told from an unique perspective. Egypt in the late fourteenth century BC: Ten-year-old Tutankhaten has just been crowned king of the Two Lands. His people pin high hopes on him, but with the kingship he hasn't asked for comes the total loss of his personal freedom. Worse still, it drives a wedge between him and Sitiah, the young daughter of Huy, his newly appointed King's Son of Kush. In order to carry out his duties, Huy moves to the far land of Nubia, accompanied by his family. In spite of the huge distance that lies between them and their inability to get in touch with each other, the two young people refuse to give up hope. The hope that some time, somehow they might get together all the same. The years go by, and everything seems to have conspired against them. Sitiah's mother does all she can to keep her daughter away from the royal court. Other women enter the life of Tutankhamun, as he is now called, foremost of all his Great Royal Wife, Ankhesenamun. Sitiah soon begins to fear that he may have forgotten all about her. Meanwhile, the young king unwaveringly goes his way which is riddled with death and bitter disappointments. He sets to restoring the temples and their priesthoods throughout the Two Lands, and fighting the widespread corruption and abuse of authority among his officials. His efforts are unshakably supported by his closest advisers, but he can count his true friends on one hand. The royal court is teeming with scheming courtiers, among them unscrupulous individuals who secretly strive for the ultimate power. Unrest in Nubia and tensions in the northern territories of the empire call for swift military action. Tutankhamun is determined to accompany his troops and lead them into battle. All the while he can't fight the feeling that his own personal quest for happiness isn't over yet...

So if you haven't read the "The Husband's Secret", do so before you attempt to read this sidekick because it contains spoilers and will ruin the book for you. Or as the author of this sidekick stated, you could read this sidekick at the same time you are reading the book just to dive deeper into the whole world and characters. Now that that is out of the way, I would just like to first say I enjoyed this sidekick. Samantha Allen summed the book up well when she said that "The Husband's Secret" wasn't just about the secrets we keep from each other, but also about the secrets we keep from ourselves. This book dives into chapter analysis and takes a deeper look at the characters. But what I found most intriguing was her explanation of the religious parallels exhibited throughout the story. I was so caught up in just living the book that I never picked up on the subtle hints. So I found it interesting to look back and see those things I missed. And of course, it is always fun to imagine possible storylines for a prequel which is also explored here. My only complaint was there were a few formatting issues, but nothing too major. Great read for those that love to explore their favorite novels deeper.

Get it Better With the Sidekick By Samantha I’ve noticed that a lot of books, ones that seem to get rave reviews from pretty much everyone, are a little more complicated to fully understand. The Husband’s Secret was no exception to that. But I’ve recently started reading some of the ‘sidekick’ books to help me understand some of the deeper stuff. That’s why I picked up this book and I’m glad I did.You really do learn quite a bit in this book. I always thought I was pretty good and picking up on hints and subtext and all that but I realized there was actually quite a bit in the regular book that I didn’t even realize was there. I ended up learning a lot more by reading the sidekick so then I had to go back and read through the regular book again. I definitely feel like I picked up a bit more. It helps you understand each of the chapters with brief summaries and describes a little more about who each of the characters are, which is pretty cool. I really liked some of the alternate endings that were suggested for the book though. I’m one of those who is always wondering ‘what if’ so it’s kind of cool to have that about a book like this too.I would definitely recommend picking up this sidekick. It’s really interesting and it’s definitely fun to read too.

By Marina Corbi This is a really great book to read if you want to get a better understanding of the characters. The Sidekick, for most, let's people know some things they probably didn't know about certain events or how characters thought or felt. I personally like how it brought up a possible prequel and how the ending could have been different in more than one way. The Sidekick points out a specific connection that the novel keeps hinting at, but I don't want to give anything away. Also, this book is detailed enough that you could probably get the entire story out of it in less than 100 pages. However, I don't suggest doing that though, because the book is a great read and obviously it's better to read the whole entire version than a shortened version. In the end, this is a good read for anyone wanting to know something they couldn't quite understand or if they just want to know what the different endings could be or something along those lines.

From the BACK COVER of the print version: This book proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the North did not go to war to free the slaves or end slavery. The North went to war because it faced economic annihilation and a Southern competitor that controlled the most demanded commodity on earth: cotton. The North's economy was based mostly on manufacturing for the South and shipping Southern cotton around the world. Cotton alone was 60% of U.S. exports in 1860. When the South seceded, the Northern economy began a dramatic collapse, and by war time, there were hundreds of thousands of hungry, unemployed Northerners in the street --- and the "tocsin of war" sounded. Economically ignorant Northern leaders then passed the astronomical Morrill Tariff that threatened to destroy the Northern shipping industry by rerouting trade away from the high-tariff North and into the low-tariff South. The Morrill Tariff was like pumping gasoline into an already raging fire. Abraham Lincoln was the first sectional president in American history. He was president of the North, and the North was clamoring for war. He saw an opportunity to start it without appearing to be the aggressor, so he took it, as verified by several Northern newspapers. Thus, he started a war that killed 800,000 men and wounded a million. The idea that the good North was so outraged over slavery that they marched armies into the South to free the slaves is an absurdity of biblical proportions and this book proves it. ------- This is an exciting, fast-paced eBook (print version has 360 pages) using over 200 sources with everything cited in notes and a bibliography. PART I proves that the economic annihilation of the North was what drove Lincoln to start the war. PART II proves the right of secession, which Horace Greeley believed in until he realized that secession meant an economic catastrophe for the North. PART III is the famous treatise by Charles W. Ramsdell, "Lincoln and Fort Sumter," which proves conclusively that Abraham Lincoln started the War Between the States. Slavery was not the cause of the War Between the States, and this book makes the irrefutable argument. ------- Here's what Dr. Clyde N. Wilson says about this book: "Historians used to know - and it was not too long ago - that the War Between the States had more to do with economics than it did with slavery. The current obsession with slavery as the “cause” of the war rests not on evidence but on ideological considerations of the present day. Gene Kizer has provided us with the conclusive case that the invasion of the Southern States by Lincoln and his party (a minority of the American people) was due to an agenda of economic domination and not to some benevolent concern for slaves. This book is rich in evidence and telling quotations and ought to be on every Southern bookshelf." Clyde N. Wilson, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of History, University of South Carolina. ------- Here's what Dr. Jim Kibler, author, scholar and English professor at the University of Georgia says about the author and this book: "Gene Kizer persuasively shows how the North fought the South out of necessity to prevent economic collapse. No where else is proof of this motive made clearer with indisputable evidence. Mr. Kizer writes with authority from the desire to tell the truth. His common sense style is the product of honesty. One cannot read his work without concluding that this is a man to be trusted."

By Joe Jordan Mr. Kizer's book is somewhat rare in historical publications about the American Civil War in that it actually tells the truth. The facts in this book are easily verified by archival sources. The logic is irrefutable, as the author states, and a joy to read for the serious historian. No intelligent person could read this book without feeling betrayed by the schools, universities, media outlets, and government officials who have peddled enormous lies about the war for generations. It is time to throw open the shutters and let the sunlight of truth illuminate the greedy Northerners who caused the worst holocaust in North American history. Mr. Kizer has done this country a great service.

Outstanding, well researched, and impeccably documented, unimpeachable proof of what really caused the WBTS By William G Anthony How any serious student of truthful history could make an attempt to trash this author's work is beyond the pale of belief! I have studied the issues concerning the WBTS for over 50 years and have over a thousand books in my personal library on all aspects of the great American tragedy that destroyed the founder's Republic. Mr. Kizer is dead on, and his sources are well documented, and in many cases taken from the Northern politicians, military personnel and newspaper publishers of that era. It is way past time that the guilty parties of the North who precipitated the war and caused the deaths of so many honorable soldiers on both sides and destroyed the property, lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in the South be exposed for the vile, evil, deceitful, miscreant crooks that they were! Political correctness be damned! let us have the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! And if the secular, socialist, bleeding heart liberals above or below Mason & Dixon's line don't like it, let them write a truthful, honest book of irrefutable proof that can show that Mr. Kizer is wrong, or shut up! 5 stars + for a book that should be required reading in every high school in the occupied CSA and the socialist USA.

17 of 23 people found the following review helpful. "Slavery is no more the cause of this war than gold is the cause of robbery."--Governor Joel Parker of New Jersey, 1863 By Diogenes The stated purpose of Gene Kizer's book is historical truth, and any reader who can suspend his one-sided, politically-correct, preconceived notions of the causes of the war long enough to read Mr. Kizer's book, in its entirety, will find a mother-load of historical truth!! I had three other books going when I started reading Slavery Was Not the Cause of the WBTS and could not go back to them until I had finished Kizer's. It is well documented with expansive footnotes and his Bibliography and Additional Resources for the Study of Southern History and Literature only served to whet my appetite for more information on the causes of the war, which in my formal education were, at best distorted or omitted, and at worst, completely revised. I agree with some of the previous reviewers; Kizer's book should be required reading in every American History class. The format is especially helpful for research with the Table of Contents including an epigraph with each chapter. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to regain perspective on this period in American history; but don't read it if you are afraid of the truth; it would definitely take you out of your comfort zone.

If the story my father told me is true, and I believe it is, then justice was served both in the driveway and in the courtroom. There are many living relatives with insight as to the truth yet none of us were consulted and that is the role that greed played. Condolences to everyone upset by this travesty.

Slavery existed long before the United States of America was founded, but so did opposition to slavery. Both flourished after the founding of the country, and the anti-slavery movement was known as abolition. For many abolitionists, slavery was the preeminent moral issue of the day, and their opposition to slavery was rooted in deeply held religious beliefs. Quakers formed a significant part of the abolitionist movement in colonial times, as did certain Founding Fathers like Benjamin Franklin. Many other prominent opponents of slavery based their opposition in Enlightenment ideals and natural law. American abolitionists during the Constitutional Convention worked against the three-fifths compromise, and also attempted to get the Constitution to ban the Atlantic slave trade. Although the three-fifths compromise became a part of the Constitution, abolitionists managed to persuade the convention to allow Congress to ban the Atlantic slave trade after 1808. Other abolitionists tried to help slaves directly, by helping them escape to the North. After the Fugitive Slave Act mandated the return of escaped slaves, abolitionists helped escaped slaves travel to Canada. In addition, many northern politicians opposed restricting slavery as either practically impossible or dangerous. In the years after the Atlantic slave trade was banned in 1808, abolitionists focused their political efforts on preventing the spread of slavery to the new territory of the Louisiana Purchase. Pro-slavery politicians likewise attempted to spread slavery to new states. Every time a new state formed from Louisiana territory was to enter the Union, intense political wrangling took place over whether the new state would be slave or free. The political wrangling often broke into violence.By the middle of the 19th century, slavery had created a fevered pitch in the politics of the country, as abolitionists and slavery proponents fought a war of words and actual wars in Kansas and Nebraska. While the South postured for secession, abolitionists, both white and black, created a stronger movement in the Northeast in places like Boston. Ultimately the issue would have to be settled via civil war.

The arguments against slavery, against removal of Black freedman from the U.S., and against subjugation of Blacks explain how we arrived at the present state of racial tension in the U.S. Frederick Douglass' s repeated references to William Lloyd Garrison led me to this book. The hardback copy is welcomed in that , writings of such monumental impact deserve placement in a curio if possible. It is hard to harbor hate of groups when great individuals like WLG waged such powerful war of thought against wrong for the benefit of a race not his own. There must be other good people like this. Allow the author to unveil the thought that saved a nation then and can save us now. M. From GA.

JAKE & CLARA is based on a true story from the dawn of the Jazz Age about scandal, politics, Hollywood—and murder. When Warren Harding won the White House in 1920, his campaign received millions from Jake Hamon—“The Oil King of Oklahoma." Harding planned to make Jake the most powerful businessman in America. But Mrs. Harding (some called her "The Duchess") had one condition—the married man had to end his affair with his long-time mistress, a girl named Clara. Jake and Clara had been together for ten years, since she was seventeen and he was thirty-seven. But Jake coveted the powerful Washington job, and he dumped Clara a couple of weeks after Harding was elected. A few days later, Clara shot Jake. By the time Jake died, Clara was in the wind. A headline-grabbing national search was conducted for the beautiful fugitive. Clara “sightings” were reported far and wide. A pair of colorful lawmen found Clara in an unlikely hiding place and brought her back to Ardmore, Oklahoma to face the charge of first-degree murder. What followed was one of the most sensational murder trials of the era. A “dream team” of powerful lawyers surrounded Clara in the courtroom. Soon Hollywood came calling, wanting to put Clara’s story on the big screen... …starring Clara as herself.

But that is exactly what happened. I wanted to read it from cover to cover, with no breaks for anything. The tale held in the pages of this book captivated me. In a no-nonsense style, Mr. Stokes brought life to a bit of United States history that I had never even heard of before, but that I was very quickly fascinated by. I couldn't wait to see how the story played out, and I alternated from cheering for and berating characters within the book. Honestly, to me, that is one of the best signs in a book. Only fairy tales ( don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking fairy tales, because I am a fan!) contain characters who are either good or evil, black or white, with no shades of gray. In reality, people are . . . well, a mixture of both. Life is made up of good and bad moments, for everyone. This book is both an accurate and entertaining portrayal of events that happened to real people, shades of gray and all.I would definitely recommend this book to others; in fact, I already have!

It has all the elements that are guaranteed to keep the reader riveted to their story .... scandal, politics, corruption, sex, murder.Jake Hamon was a rich and powerful man in Oklahoma who deposited millions of dollars in Warren Hardings coffers when he was elected president. Harding was set to make Jake even more powerful than he already was. But there was a glitch ... Mrs. Harding, who was extremely straight-laced, let it be known that the much-married Jake would have to dump his then mistress, Clara.Jake loved Clara, but he loved money and power and prestige more. He dumped her and moved on. Clara was a tad upset ... a few days later she shot and killed Jake... and then ran for her life. A national hunt for the murderess ensued ... which finally located her and brought her back to face the music. From the Book: "What followed was one of the most sensational murder trials of the era. A “dream team” of powerful lawyers surrounded Clara in the courtroom. Soon Hollywood came calling, wanting to put Clara’s story on the big screen...…starring Clara as herself. What a terrific book ... a great story .... a wonderful look at life in the 20s. In today's world, this wouldn't even make it to Page One. Jake and Clara were a great love story ... until his greed took over their lives ..and his death.Their story was extremely well written .. bringing to life the era of the 1920s. Once started, I absolutely could not put it down. Highly recommend this one to anyone who likes true crime or likes to read about the world before we got here. Many heartfelt thanks to the author and Wordslinger Publicity who furnished an ARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Clara is 17 when she meets 37 year old Jake Hamon . He is a wealthy man, climbing his way up the ladder to more wealth at any cost . He would do anything for a dollar and his personal life sounds as if he would do anything for a woman . He was married with kids when he began his affair with Clara . He "hired " her to work for him ,and they were together 10 years. She loved the rich lifestyle, but I think she also cared very deeply for Jake, even though he never divorced his wife ,and continued to visit her and his family many times throughout the years .Jake has connections, and pretty soon he finds a new ladder to climb : the political one . He gets involved in the inner circle of Warren Harding and his run for President , and gets promised a high cabinet job in office when Harding gets elected . There is only one problem . It seems The "Duchess" , Mrs. Harding , knows Jake a bit better than he thought .That is when his whole world starts falling apart .Rather than tell the whole story, let's just say it was an extremely interesting story , VERY well written . I think, in the end, maybe everyone got what was coming to them .Great book !

This groundbreaking international collection of personal narratives by thirty writers born during World War II traces the tremendous impact of the war on children and families around the globe. Despite only fragmentary early childhood memories of the great historical event that most pervasively shaped our present world, the contributors are able to describe in vivid, touching, and insightful detail how the war affected their parents and molded their own characters. The essayists, several of whom are prominent figures, come from many walks of life, but the stories testify to a shared generational experience. The humanity of this presentation of war through the eyes of very small children transcends the more familiar forms of war history centered on campaigns, battles, dates, and the old enemy lines between Allies and Axis. Lavishly illustrated with previously unpublished family photographs from the war era, the book concludes with an essay by the noted social theorist Nancy J. Chodorow. Born into a World at War documents in the most personal ways how World War II placed an indelible mark on the children and parents who survived it. and how that war continues to affect both public and private lives more than fifty years later. It is a must for those interested in World War II, the impact of history on individual lives, and the interface between social history and personality development.

It IS a survivors account, but a survivor because of a decision made by a previous generation. Enlightening, what young people remember...
