In 2009, the Prototyp car museum in Hamburg, Germany, organized a special two-month exhibit where 25 classic, streamlined automobiles had an unprecedented "aerodynamic rendezvous." The exhibition included such automotive gems as the 1940 BMW Mille Miglia Touring Coupe, the 1977 Mercedes-Benz C111/III, Porsche's 356 Pre-A coupe of 1950, Petermax Müller's 1938 World Record Volkswagen, Das Auto magazine founder Paul Pietsch's 1952 Avus Coupe, and the Kamm K3 from 1938. Michel Zumbrunn, who specializes in classic cars, photographed this unique exhibition of never-before-shown-together works of art. The result is this book, an unparalleled artistic documentation of the history of the aerodynamically optimized automobile. Anyone with a passion for classic cars and the science of aerodynamics will revel in these gorgeous images coupled with historical and technical information based on research by renowned experts.

Anyone with a passion for classic cars and the science of aerodynamics will revel in these elegant images coupled with historical and technical information based on research by renowned experts on vehicle design, drag and the coefficient-of-friction.Since the display was in Germany, the selection of relevant streamlined vehicles is predominately German. Notable exceptions are the 1936 Lancia Aprilia (Italy) and the 1936 Tatra (Czechoslovakia). A U.S. museum could stage a version of this event and recognize selected domestic aerodynamic designs such as the 1936 Stout Scarab, Buckminster Fuller’s 1933 Dymaxion, 1948 Buick Streamliner, 1938 Phantom Corsair and a 1934-1936 DeSoto Airflow. The Collier Museum in Naples, Florida or the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia would be likely candidates.Streamlined Classic Cars of the 20th Century is a big book and a heavy book with 324 pages. While the size and elegant design usually signifies a “coffee table” book, Streamlined is also a very good read for classic car aficionados, photographers and design engineers. Streamlined would make a great Christmas or birthday gift for the car geek in your life.

Sometimes that can be a shot in the dark but in this case, the book was far more than I expected. It arrived in a hard slipcase and is quite nice. The paper is very heavy and printing is excellent. It's true that most of the cars presented are German but that should be no surprise with so much research in aerodynamics being done before WW2. Each car is presented with fine photo essay. I'm definitely enjoying the book and certainly got more than my money's worth.

First copy arrived damaged ( box was ok, book inside was not) but Amazon replaced it immediately, they were super helpful, and the replacement copy arrived two days later in good condition. Very pleased with the book and the great service.

Excerpt from William Morris, Poet, Craftsman, SocialistThe personal life of William Morris is already known to us through Mr. Mackail's admirable biography as fully, probably, as we shall ever know it. My own endeavour has been to present a picture of Morris's busy career perhaps not less vivid for the absence of much detail, and showing only the man and his work as they appeared to the outer public.I have used as a basis for my narrative, the volumes by Mr. Mackail; William Morris, Us Art, his Writings, and his Public Life, by Aymer Vallance; The Books of William Morris, by H. Buxton Forman; numerous articles in periodicals, and Morris's own varied works.I wish to express my indebtedness to Mr. Bulkley of 42 East 14th Street, New York City, for permission to reproduce a number of Morris patterns in his possession, notably a fragment of the St. James's wallpaper.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The author speaks very praisingly of Morris but I am guessing this may be a style that was accepted in biographies written in this time period. Overall, from my perspective of not knowing much about Morris, I found it interesting to learn more about his life.

As a long time fan of Breaking Bad and a frequent traveler through Albuquerque By Phil Donner As a long time fan of Breaking Bad and a frequent traveler through Albuquerque, I thought this collection of cards was absolutely charming. This little book makes it clear that the city has more more to offer than a fast trip via the interstate would ever indicate. From upscale to not so upscale, there are a variety of neighborhoods and neighborhood features that are colorfully featured; and the landmark stops along Route 66 are most engaging.I know the next time I go through this city, I plan to take a little longer route and a little more time.

This book was inspired by one of Sam's first road trips and his experience of coming out of the mountains and seeing the beautiful skyline lit up in this amazing city parlayed with the iconic Television show 'Breaking Bad. A must have for those seeking another perspective on both.

For a king renowned for his love life, Henry VIII has traditionally been depicted as something of a prude, but the story may have been different for the women who shared his bed. How did they take the leap from courtier to lover, to wife? What was Henry really like as a lover? Henry’s women were uniquely placed to experience the tension between his chivalric ideals and the lusts of the handsome, tall, athletic king; his first marriage, to Catherine of Aragon, was, on one level, a fairy-tale romance but his affairs with Anne Stafford, Elizabeth Carew and Jane Popincourt undermined it early on. Later, his more established mistresses, Bessie Blount and Mary Boleyn, risked their good names by bearing him illegitimate children. Henry did not see that casual liaisons might threaten his marriage, until he met the one woman who held him at arms length. Anne Boleyn's seductive eyes helped rewrite history. After their passionate marriage turned sour, the king rapidly married Jane Seymour. Her death in childbirth left him alone, without wife or lover, for the first time in decades. In the quest for a new queen, he scoured the courts of Europe, obsessed with the beautiful Christina of Milan, whose rejection of him spurred him into the arms of Anne of Cleves and soon after the lively teenager Catherine Howard. Henry’s final years were spent with the elegant and accomplished widow Catherine Parr, who sacrificed personal pleasure for duty by marrying him while her heart was bestowed elsewhere. What was it like for these women to share Henry’s bed, bear his children or sit on the English throne? He was a man of great appetites, ready to move heaven and earth for a woman he desired; their experiences need to be readdressed in a frank, modern take on the affairs of his heart. What was it really like to be Mrs Henry VIII?

Zupanec This new book by Amy Licence shows Henry VIII in an entirely different light. For years historians had tried to tell us that Henry was a prude and had only two, maybe three mistresses. That’s not what primary sources tell us, however. By piecing together sources from various stages of Henry VIII’s life, Amy Licence gives us a highly readable account of the King’s wives and mistresses. “Henry was a deeply private man and preferred to keep his amours known only to a small, loyal core of companions”: this is the main theme of this book. Licence’s work is heavily documented with primary source material and she also gives us new, intriguing theory about the marriage of Prince Arthur and Katherine of Aragon. This author’s style is eminently readable and I felt like I was there on the spot. Can’t wait for more titles from Amy Licence.

What people do not realize is Henry's marriages and love affairs had more than enough drama By Annette Summary:In my opinion, it is unfair how Henry VIII and his relationships have been depicted on the movie screen and in books. Because most of the time it is an inaccurate rendering. Accuracy is swept away and replaced with theatrics that titillate. What people do not realize is Henry's marriages and love affairs had more than enough drama, adding to the reality of what happened is unnecessary. I'm thankful Amy Licence has not sought to write another biography on Henry VIII. Instead, she has written a study on Henry's relationships with his wives and mistresses. Henry was married six times. He had several affairs. All of the relationships began and ended on his terms. I've never thought of Henry as man who was not in control. But death had the last dramatic session in his life. A legacy of Henry VIII is his lengthy list of wives, especially concerning the circumstances of each relationship. I have been curious to know what Henry's enticement had been for these women? What was Henry like as a lover? Was "it" all a game and Henry the master chess player?Amy Licence defines, "three key phases of Henry's intimate relationships."1509-1525. A young Henry.1526-1537. The era dominated by a preoccupation for an heir.1537-1547. Henry's effort to "recreate the stability and happiness of a loving marriage."My Thoughts:The best writers know and write for their targeted audience. The most clever writers have a particular skill they have mastered. In Amy Licence's case, her particular skill is the culture and society of Tudor women. When I began reading The Six Wives and Many Mistresses of Henry VIII, I did not expect a Henry VIII biography. I expected and received a detailed study of Henry's love relationships.I'm compelled to feel strong empathy for Henry's first two wives. Long suffering Catherine of Aragon. She had been Henry's wife at his best. She had been Henry's wife at his worst. Catherine of Aragon had been Henry's wife longer than his other wives, but when Henry was finished with her, she was regarded as dead to his life. Likewise, is Henry's second wife Anne Boleyn. She is a favorite historical figure among readers and lovers of Tudor history. I love reading historical books on Anne. To read either a fact or fictional work on Anne, brings her passionate and vivid personality to life.Henry had wooed and coddled Anne for years, before marrying her after his divorce from Catherine, in which Henry had transpired and enacted. Before reading The Six Wives and Many Mistresses of Henry VIII, I had read books on Henry's mistresses, Elizabeth Blount and Mary Boleyn. Licence reveals several more mistresses in Henry's list. While reading the book, I wondered how Henry had time for a busy sex life? He was a powerful charismatic man. I also believe he "knew" women. I believe he made it a hobby to study women, at least for the benefit of his interests; and I believe this endeavor appealed to his large ego.Pregnancy, miscarriage, and birthing during Tudor times is explained. I was most interested to read about superstitions in regard to diagnosing pregnancy.A favorite quote from the book:"The greater the love he felt for them, the greater the suffering he needed to inflict upon them"Source: Free pdf copy from Amberley Publishing in exchange for a review.

By Amazon Customer I really like how Amy Licence goes very deep into the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII and dispels many myths about their husband, namely that Henry was this very prude figure who only had two mistresses. Using contemporary evidence she shows it was the complete opposite. I also love how she focused on the early years of marriage between Katherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. They're always depicted as old and boring versus a young and more energetic Anne Boleyn who was ten times better and more beautiful than her predecessor but Amy Licence sets the record straight on this. Everyone believes she was old and prudish because that's certainly how she became when Henry annulled his marriage to her, but in the first years of their marriage the two were very passionate and contemporary beliefs about sex were not as conservative as we think. There were some sexual practices that the church allowed and that Katherine and Henry might've engaged on and even after she stopped having her period, he still visited her chambers and she continued to enjoy the feasts and participate in the many dances and plays. There is a lot of interesting details regarding her first marriage to Arthur from what she wore, what might have gone between closed doors which offers a great new possibility -and a very plausible one- regarding the consummation or non-consummation. Henry rode as Sir Loyal Heart and wore Katherine of Aragon's colors, their marriage was a true love match and she was not only his equal in many ways but she was also beautiful and albeit older like him, she was his first choice. He later claimed that he was fulfilling his father's dying wish but as Amy explains, this seems highly unlikely. Henry's choice of bride like his maternal grandfather, was to say to the world that he was his own person and king of his realm and he would not accept any other bride that was not his choosing and there was also another similarity between his first marriage and that of his grandfather's. Katherine was five years and a half older than him just as Elizabeth was older than him and also a widow. However she didn't possess the same luck that Elizabeth did giving Henry his longed for heir. The fact that Henry still continued to comfort her after she lost so many babies and their most prized-one, their new year baby, says a lot about their relationship as well as how many described it and how it was just so passionate and beautiful and Katherine loved to participate in all these great displays of love, affection, costuming and chivalry. But everything has an end and after Henry realized he wasn't going to get a son by her, his wandering eye turned to other women and here it's where Amy deconstructs the accepted version of events that Henry was a prude. He wasn't. He was just very discreet of his affairs unlike his French counterpart, Francis I. Henry had learned from his grandfather's mistakes who was not so discreet. Henry was a true masker and he was always very concerned with image and despite the reports that proved his many liaisons, he was successful in keeping most of his affairs private except for two and those are only known because of Henry Fitzroy and his marriage to Anne Boleyn. There is a lot of attention on Anne Boleyn as well and that's because you can't rule her out because she played an important part as Katherine once did, in English politics and religion. She was an intense advocate of the Reform, however the Reform as Amy explains was divided into many sects and although Anne was described as "more Lutheran than Luther himself" her actions seem to lean on more with the intellectual thought that Marguerite of Navarre (a woman she admired during her time in France, first serving her future husband's sister and then Queen Claude) adopted which was a combination of Swiss, French and English radicalism. Anne Boleyn may not have intended to become queen from the beginning as many series depict and indeed it may have been accidental and I think that's true since she had already learned the tough lesson with Percy that as a woman, especially an unmarried one, she had to be careful who she was with or who courted her. There are many passages in her chapters that reflect humanist thought on illicit affairs which Anne seems to have adopted. Amy Licence also challenges the reader by asking important questions such as was Anne really chaste during her waiting period for Henry to marry her or did they engage in any foreplay (as betrothal was regarded as close to marriage so some couples did in fact engage on this. This was ironically also the reason that Edward IV's brother Richard III used to invalidate his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville based on the convenient claim that Edward had promised marriage to someone else before he married Elizabeth) or did Henry look to someone else for comfort? Given Henry's actions and the wealth of primary sources that Amy has presented, it is very possible that a little of both happened. They might not have consummated their union but something did went on there such as kisses or caresses and then Henry went to someone else to have sex.Anne and Katherine however had tragic endings and both of them for the same reason: They couldn't give the king a son. Anne was beheaded, Katherine died but her death was a slow and sadder one because she was for three years waiting in vain for things to change and when she realized she didn't, she also realized she was going to die alone and abandoned by the man whom she had once been so passionately in love. The last part of the book focuses on the remaining four wives. I would've loved to have seen a little more on Jane Seymour, I believe she was not completely a pawn. She was certainly coached but she was not dumb and reading three biographies of her and other 'wives' book I believe she learned from experience and there was definitely more to her than met the eye. But it was probably due to the fact that her reign was so short that so little was dedicated to her.Anne of Cleves also has a negative stereotype that she did take time to deconstruct and show that there are many inconsistencies with the declarations of her ladies and servants that said the marriage was not consummated (when she could not speak very good English at this point) to the fact that she was relieved the marriage was over when she wasn't and after Katherine Howard's demise might have expected in vain to become his wife again and therefore as her brother hoped, revive the Cleves alliance and when this didn't happen and she found out about Henry's marriage to his last wife she was very angry because she didn't find Katherine Parr appealing.Katherine Howard is a special case and she continues to divide opinion after more than five centuries. There was certainly a sexual element to her regarding Mannox and Dereham and whether this was sexual abuse or voluntary, we will never know. The author believes it was likely the latter as Katherine was young and very naive and inexperienced she was easily led astray by these two more experienced and opportunist men. But her union with Culpeper is more confusing and it's likely to have been platonic but possibility that it may have been sexual is not ruled out. After Katherine's lovers were executed, she and Jane Parker, lady Rochford (widow of George Boleyn) followed them in that order. The last wife was none other than Katherine Parr who some still believe she was Henry's nurse but she wasn't. Henry had his own nurses and didn't need another one, at an advance age he knew he wasn't going to beget anymore children from anyone and wanted companionship from someone he could enjoy being with and that position fell on Katherine who had her eyes set on someone else (Thomas Seymour).Katherine like her namesake and Henry's first wife was not only very smart, but she was also pragmatic (perhaps even more pragmatic), charismatic and kind (she quickly won the hearts of the English people and her royal stepchildren and was particularly close to Mary whom she was closer to in age) and above all very learned knowing Italian, Latin, French and her love for learning encouraged her two stepdaughters to translate Erasmus and Marguerite of Navarre's writings respectively. She narrowly avoided death through kindness and humility and she was the only other wife besides the first Katherine, to be appointed as Regent. The Six wives and the many Mistresses of Henry VIII is a rich addition to my Tudor book shelves and to women's studies. This book is really a HERstory of the women of Henry's life written in a way that it hasn't been written before.

WW2 Small-Unit memoir, U.S. Navy style By Cagey Millions of "average" U.S. citizens served in the armed forces in WW2, and their memoirs which capture their "view from sea level" and almost always reflect their (real) ignorance of "the big picture" and are as a result necessarily myopic, are often at least as interesting as the historian-written tomes describing the most important battles and units and individual (heroic) actions involved in these. This PT Squadron and in particular one boat and its crew, were fortunate enough to have been observed and recorded for 3 years by a very capable diarist, and we are fortunate to be treated to a book rendition of this diary. The author clearly kept an amazingly detailed diary, full of the activities, often banal, of everyday life of a group of men "on assignment overseas in the service of their country", and relates these tersely but sufficiently. The subject matter: primarily a single PT boat (traveling with a squadron of same). The book chronicles the more military aspects, the day to day operations, the "Murphy's Law" (FUBAR)-type events (whether committed by Squadron commanders, individual sailors, or collections of them; usually trying to do their best in the presence of limited information and "fog of war", with varying degrees of success) which occur on a very regular basis) and the human-nature activities (shore leave antics, how these differ in different parts of the world; shell collecting, exploring the surviving vestiges of civilization on the periphery of a war zone, etc.). Basically everything the author saw or heard while assigned to this boat (and squadron). A diary. And a seemingly equitable and level-headed one. Also noteworthy is the circumstance of this unit: in this case a single PT boat has a crew of 12-13 sailors, so it is possible to refer to all of the boatmates by name (a first in my WW2 reading experience) and follow these individuals (real characters) throughout the boat's journey. Of course, sailors come and go (though not very often) as injury, illness, or "the bureaucracy" intervene in the paths of their lives, more "fog" that was a part of their reality. All in all a very interesting and (in my extensive WW2 reading) unique tale.

I am getting ready to take a two-week course at Oxford University on "The Hundred Years War." And, after struggling through the recommended reading and finding it dull, dry, disorganized and totally forgetful, I happened upon this neat little volume in the Kindle Store. Four of us have read it so far, and it tells you the really important highlights of this really important time in English/French history. Not an in-depth study but certainly useful. I recommened it!

By Barbee B I was woefully ignorant of the Hundred Years' War, but wanted more than a Wikipedia entry and less than a very expensive (to me) Kindle book.I purchased this short history for 99 cents and found it as well written, informative, and mesmerizing as any of today's more well known authors. The book was pure history but written in a very readable and engaging style. The author wrote in a style emphasizing the humanity of the players without 'romanticizing' the ugliness of these events. I teared up several times (an amazing thing for this cynical woman) as the author factually yet sensitively outlined the brutality and treachery of what befell Joan of Arc.For 99 cents I read a captivating vignette and increased my knowledge and appreciation of this historical event. I would recommend this book to anyone who, like myself, wants a overall historic lesson in a short, well written style. I will read more of this authors works, if available.

And I wouldn't trust Reeve with anyone or anything that I actually cared about. He'll no doubt improve as the story goes along, but that invasive body search left me cringing - and wishing Emily had planted her pointed toed stiletto in his crotch! Here's hoping that he gets his comeuppance before this story is done!Jgtimm

Superheroes exist. Driven, honest, courageous… true heroes. They live among us, and all over the world, they save lives. Their stories are told in hushed tones to rapt audiences, over and over again, myths of epic proportions. This is not that kind of story. Jolene Faraday is the girl next door, the type of woman who will babysit your kids or lend you twenty bucks when you get into a bind. She takes care of her mother, works her way through college, and even escorts her elderly friend to church. But no one knows the other side of her story. Jolene is also the Detroit area’s most infamous, infuriating burglar, robbing the mansions of the wealthy and making a mockery of the law enforcement officials who vow that each job will be her last. She thrives on the chaos, the infamy, the pure thrill of every heist she pulls off. And then one day, it happens. Across the globe, a new wave of ordinary people find themselves with super powers. Some hide, afraid of what they’ve become. Some become heroes; others, villains. Jolene just becomes a better crook. And suddenly, it’s not just police officers after her. She’s officially under the jurisdiction of StrikeForce, Detroit’s supernatural law enforcement force, an agency shrouded in mystery. As her actions become more audacious and the world begins to see that she is far more dangerous than they ever realized, she finds herself on StrikeForce’s most wanted list. Which leaves her with a choice to make: learn how to become a hero, or embrace life as a super villain.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. "White trash, criminal, thief. Whatever. Not even gonna argue it. But I've never been worthless." By H. Bala - Portia: "You're not a hero. You never wanted to be."- Jolene: "I'm not. And I never will be. What kind of assho1e actually calls herself a hero?"Saturday, today, is an awesome day. I just now got done reading Colleen Vanderlinden's A New Day and One More Day (StrikeForce Book 2), Books 1 and 2 of her StrikeForce series. Color me stoked, man, whenever I stumble across fantastic superhero prose. Vanderlinden's protagonist, Jolene Faraday, is seriously badass. Jolene is white trash. She's a career crook. I dare you to not root for her.Somewhere in the armpit of Detroit, in her dump of a neighborhood, she's known as someone you can count on for help. So what if she lives in a trailer park with her mom? Jolene is a college student and a library assistant. She's also an exceptional burglar, meticulous and super-careful, and the very same one over whom the thwarted authorities have time and again pulled their hair out trying to collar. Jolene's sort of made a laughingstock of the Detroit PD.In Jolene Faraday's world there exist super-powered humans, engineered from lightning strikes generated by seismic storms known as Confluences. Ten years after the first one comes the next one, and it's this second Confluence that places an even bigger bullseye on Jolene's back. Suddenly, she's being targeted by Detroit's local superhero group, StrikeForce. And, so, to echo the book blurb, Jolene has a choice to make: fully commit to her life of crime... or become a hero.Maybe what I like best about Jolene is her temperament. A life of being down-and-out and kicked to the curb has made her paranoid and independent and absolutely unwilling to take crap from anyone. Boy, she's tough. And despite her felonious habits and her uncommon moral compass, she does have a sliver, a shaving, of a good heart. I recommend these two books for this marvelous lead character and her rewarding story arc, and also for the author's immersive worldbuilding. True, the societal ramification stuff she touches on has been explored before - and brilliantly so - in books such as Marion G. Harmon's Wearing the Cape, Matthew Phillion's The Indestructibles, Trey Dowell's The Protectors, and Rob Rogers' Devil's Cape. But Vanderlinden executes so well and writes with such smooth flow that there's this impression of events unfolding organically. So, yeah, add her superhero book (and its sequel) to the list. They're the bonafide stuff. Contents include: A heroine who is down-to-earth and seriously relatable, down to her moral quandaries; some heist stuff; some sick superhero action stuff; a superhero group that's less than advertised; misdirections; unexpected character arcs; a riff on Batman that swerves into something else; and how a Dolly Parton movie saves the day.Other recommended superhero books (and series):- Marion G. Harmon's Wearing the Cape- Peter Clines' Ex-Heroes- Jim Bernheimer's Confessions of a D-List Supervillain- Matthew Phillion's The Indestructibles- Mur Lafferty's Playing for Keeps- P.S. Power's Proxy (The Infected Book 1)- Trey Dowell's The Protectors: A Thriller- R S J Gregory's Cosmic Girl: Rising Up- Blake M. Petit's Other People's Heroes- Kirby Moore's Starfall City- C.J. Carella's Armageddon Girl (New Olympus Saga, Book 1)- Rob Rogers' Devil's Cape- Joshua Guess' Next (The Next Chronicle Book 1)- Blake Northcott's Arena Mode- Emmie Mears' The Masked Songbird (Shrike Book 1)- Austin Grossman's Soon I Will Be Invincible- George R.R. Martin's classic Wild Card anthologies

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Fabulous new super hero series By serendipity5 Colleen Vanderlinden has proved once again what a talented author she is. This is another completely new series from her, different again from anything before but with all the same hallmarks I've come to expect, quality writing, a gripping plot, fantastic world building and finally the thing that puts her at the top of my favourites list, characters you completely take to your heart. I completely devoured this in one sitting, another knock out hit.Jolene is not your every day sort of hero, she has a very different sort of moral compass, but she has one none the less and she stays true to it throughout. I adored her from the start, as we slowly start to learn about a world where super hero's exist, just not necessarily the ones we've come to expect from film and TV. Complicated doesn't even cover it! I 100% believed in the world that has been built here and I am so intrigued. Jolene starts out with a pretty lonely existence and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her interacting with others and building relationships. Strike force was a fascinating organisation with so many different people, I'm eager to read more about them. The ending of the book was fabulous and leaves plenty for us to look forward to in future instalments. I'm definitely on board for the ride.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic! By Spencer Landsman Felt like I was reading a great Lee/Ditko Silver Age comic! One of the best superhero novels I've read in awhile. So glad the new one was available as soon as I finished. Jolene is real and complex as are her predicaments. While I guessed her fix for her "tech" problem immediately, I sure didn't see how she was going to resolve her people problem. Can't wait to see how it goes in book two.

The artist Mike Wilks set out in the 1980s to depict as many words as possible in twenty-six images corresponding to the alphabet. His four-year painting odyssey resulted in a suite of magnificent compilations, all minutely detailed, masterfully rendered, and slightly surreal. Each image contains hundreds of items all starting with the same letter. It is a mind-blowing and enjoyably engaging task to attempt to identify all of the objects. One wonders at the artist accomplishing this seemingly Herculean artistic endeavor. The reader need not go crazy, however, trying to name all of the words represented in the images (at last count, 7,825!). Numbered line drawings accompanied by lists of words serve as keys to the paintings. In examining the paintings carefully, one can check one s finds against the keys and in doing so will discover new words, as well as take delight in the process of examining the art carefully. It s art appreciation and a game of discovery, all in one. The images in this book were first published in 1986 in the best-selling The Ultimate Alphabet, and later in The Annotated Ultimate Alphabet, in which keys to the images were included. Now, The Ultimate Alphabet: Complete Edition brings these two volumes together in this deluxe slipcase edition. One volume presents the paintings with introductory text by the artist; the other offers the keyed drawings and alphabetical lists of words. There has never been anything like Mike Wilks s The Ultimate Alphabet, and it s high time for it to come back into print, in this revised Complete Edition.

We found him through the game Scrutineyes years ago, which featured his artwork as part of an object-finding game. My only gripe is I wish the format of these books was larger so that you could enjoy the detail of the art better. The Scrutineyes panels were much larger, which was nice, especially for those with older eyes. Overall, though, I highly recommend these amazing pieces of art!

I'm not quite sure how I found this, but I have the game Scrutineyes, which is my favorite and includes only a few of these pictures. When I saw the book, I couldn't believe there was a picture for every letter. It is also accompanied by a second book, the annotated version which lists every picture and what they are.Beautiful artwork and hours of viewing enjoyment.

Astoundingly Wonderful By Amazon Customer I cannot count the hours I spent pouring over the Annotated Ultimate Alphabet, starting when I was 10 and continuing through college, when my copy disappeared in a move. I'm delighted that it's finally reprinted, and I can share it again with friends and family. It is an astoundingly wonderful book.

This book is an emotional trip for those who still get goose bumps by "rococo" style of writing. Their minds were not of their time... they were amazing individuals. If you are tired of mundane language and thought... Close your eyes, buy this book and never look back.. you won't be disappointed.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Correspondence of the Titans By J.Q.L. 4150 Absolutely wonderful. While it should seem a meeting of equals-- one does feel unmistakably that the younger Flaubert quite looks up to & idolizes the older Sand. While there is a certain amount of 19th century 'floral arrangement' one always has to pick thru with such period pieces... the candy drops and tarts littered throughout this correspondence of titans more than makes it all the worthwhile.

Their letters to each other gave me an insight into their creative as well as personal lives. I highly recommend it to people who are accustomed to the best in literate.Martha N. Fried

Best Ebook PDF Hyper Nature, by Philippe Martin

Philippe Martin revolutionized digital nature photography by "stacking" images. To take one photograph, he will shoot a subject hundreds of times, stack the images into a composite, and then clean up the composite image pixel by pixel. The result is a "quasi-3D" photograph of nature with such sharpness and brilliance that surely it will leap from the page. What's more, Martin takes the photographs in his subjects' natural setting, including inhospitable jungles.

Hyper Nature is a portfolio of Martin's stunning photographs of snails, orchids, dragonflies, snakes, frogs and many other creatures. The hyperrealism and large images bring the viewer into the heart of the scene, face to face with the subject, where he can discover the smallest detail. This is nature photography as never seen before. Martin also explains how he achieves his photographs, increasing readers' appreciation and leaving a legacy for new photographers.

The most recent exhibition of Martin's photographs attracted one million visitors to the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris.

Hyper Nature is ideal for all photography and nature enthusiasts as well as photographers, naturalists, educators, museum specialists and scientists.

Hyper Nature, by Philippe Martin

Review In his eye-popping new book "Hyper Nature," photographer and ecologist Philippe Martin uses a painstaking post-processing technique to capture the almost unreal beauty of chameleons, crickets, beetles, lizards, frogs and other tiny critters. The technique that he uses -- "hyper focus" -- is a departure from the vast majority of macro nature photography you've seen before. While harnessing the depth of field is an intentional aesthetic choice for many macro photographers, it presents certain challenges if you're trying to get an entire small subject in focus... To achieve his surreal "hyper focus" aesthetic, Martin fused multiple images of a single subject by piecing them together in focus stacking software. Each of the stacked images are focused on a different part of the subject, so after they are combined, what's left is one image that is focused uniformly throughout... Of course, "Hyper Nature" is more than an impressive photographic feat -- it's also a fascinating study of some of our planet's smallest yet intriguing life forms. Nearly all of the creatures featured in the book could probably fit in the palm of your hand, which is why it's so eye-opening to see them presented in such resounding clarity. (Catie Leary Mother Nature Network 2015-10-13)Like the human eye, a camera can only focus on one thing at a time. But thanks to a process combining high-def digital photography, computer processing and years of painstaking work by photographer Philippe Martin, this limitation has been removed. Each bug, snake, flower or fish in this tome was photographed dozens of times, and the shots digitally overlaid so the entire depth of field is tack-sharp. Result: Over 170 pages of bug-eyed wonder that literally freeze time and let you pore over every scale of a dragonfly's wing and every hair on a spider's legs. The images are the main attraction, but the captions have their own nerdy appeal. (Keith Blanchard Wall Street Journal 2015-10-19)Hyper Nature is the culmination of a dream. Philippe Martin, an innovative nature photographer, spent years pursuing his ambition to produce images with the subject in perfect focus. Large spreads and a striking three-dimensional quality (developed using Martin's own Hyper Focus process) make every subject, from grotesquely coiled snakes (much too close for comfort) to delicate orchids, seem to jump off the page. The lifelike reproductions of insects and reptiles may give some viewers the creepy-crawlies, but even the squeamish may find themselves drawn in, as the stunning detail of each shot invites deeper scrutiny. Nature photographers and digital imaging enthusiasts alike will enjoy the last section of the book, which unpacks the process, showing the images in their earliest state, then again as the process is partly complete, and at last fully realized. Martin's technique requires an amalgamation of many photographs taken with different focus points. Larger subjects can require upward of 25 hours to digitally process. Martin's love of detail shows through, as each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the subject, its relevant ecology, any imaging flaws, and photography specs such as f-stop and aperture. From a newly emerged common cicada's three red eyes to a male cuckoo roller's iridescent feathers to a tiny spider photobombing a june bug's portrait, the details that spring from the pages of Hyper Nature incite all sorts of reactions to the book's array of subjects: freakish monstrosities, surreal dreamscapes, and the alluring grace of sentient forms. Gift Guide 2015 selection. (Katie L. Burke American Scientist 2015-12-18)Obtaining detailed, undistorted nature photographs is challenging, and the difficulty only increases as the subjects decrease in size. To create accurate images of various tiny animals, plants, and insects, award-winning nature photographer Martin (winner of the 2012 International Festival of Wildlife Photography's Grand Prize for Digital Photography) has used a technique called focus stacking. The subject is photographed multiple times at different focuses, then the photographs are composited to create an image in which no part of the subject is out of focus. The resulting image pops out of the page in almost surreal detail--Martin's term for this is hyper focus (hence the book's title). Martin states that the images are more illustrations than photographs and includes a short segment at the end of the book explaining how an image is created. Each photo is accompanied by the name--usually both the common and the scientific--and a few sentences about the subject, either in general, or about the one pictured. The size and detail of Martin's photographs puts the subjects on an almost human scale, while fully displaying their fascinating strangeness. The minimal text is informative and often charming, but the painstakingly created images are the book's reason for being. A wonderful volume to page through and linger over; it will inspire naturalists as well as photographers and other artists. (Robert Mixner Library Journal 2015-12-01)In his book "Hyper Nature," Martin provides what he calls illustrations, not photos, of many different species. These illustrations are composed of many close-up photos stacked together and then rendered through digital painting, resulting in an image with "Avatar"-type surrealism... Obtaining this extreme focus, however, is far from simple. According to Martin, the technique involves a lot of time and requires five disciplines: ecology, photography, drawing, painting and photo editing. The process begins in the field, where he patiently seeks out his subjects from a vast catalog of critters: everything from bees to dragonflies to caterpillars. He then shoots dozens upon dozens of photos of any given creature in its natural state, using only natural light. Back in his studio, anywhere from 30 to 100 pictures of one bug are glued or fused together to make one digital image, Martin said. And then he'll spend "between five and 25 hours painting," he said, which accounts for about 95 percent of the overall process. The painting is not with a brush but with pixels. It's a painstaking process that smooths out the layers of high-def photos, making the whole depth of field come into sharp focus. The end result? Beetles and butterflies that look as though they'd leap directly off the page. "It's easy," Martin said, though perfecting the process has taken about seven years. Through this medium, he has revolutionized nature photography, and he hopes his work will pave the way for further developments in the field. (Michelle Cohan CNN 2015-12-16)

Foreword

The composite images in this book are the result of five years of original imaging experiments in close-up nature photography. In recent decades, nature images have undergone extraordinary developments. Similarly, scientific images obtained through the use of high technology, such as scanning electron microscopes and 3-D imagery, contribute greatly to the current popular appeal of nature photography.

This book presents the result of repurposing readily available focus-stacking software. The images are by no means photographs and they are not true 3-D images. They are illustrations composed of many close shots, the results of a process that we call, for lack of a better term, "Hyper Focus." When rendered, mainly through digital painting, these images provide the viewer a new perception of biodiversity that shines light on the most humble and prolific of nature's creations. All were taken in natural, even very low, light, without the optical distortion that would result from the use of wide-angle lenses.

I hope this book will find a place in the growing global respect for nature!
