Being Black Not Much Has Changed: Then, Now and the Way Forward is about the movement of black people from Africa to North and South America, their enslavement, emancipation and their great contribution to their new home. The colonization of Africa, struggles for independence, military coups, the economy, problems and how black people can move forward by developing Africa to make the continent a source of pride for black people are all discussed.

Black people have contributed a lot to the progress of the world in many ways. Their free labor contributed to the development of the United States of America. Their ingenuity and productivity resulted in the creation and invention of many things we use today.

This book wants to bring to light the goodness in black people because the world only acknowledges few among them; too many that have contributed positively to the world are forgotten.

Best Ebook PDF The Uskoks of Senj: Piracy, Banditry, and Holy War in the Sixteenth-Century Adriatic, by Catherine Wendy Bracewell

In this highly original and influential book, Catherine Wendy Bracewell reconstructs and analyzes the tumultuous history of the uskoks of Senj, the martial bands nominally under the control of the Habsburg Military Frontier in Croatia, who between the 1530s and the 1620s developed a community based on raiding the Ottoman hinterland, Venetian possessions in Dalmatia, and shipping on the Adriatic.

Drawing on a broad range of sources, including the archives of the Dalmatian communes under Venetian rule and military frontier records, Bracewell provides the first comprehensive analysis of the uskoks as a social phenomenon, examining their origins, their military and social organization, their plunder economy, their mental world, and their relations with other groups in this borderland between three empires. The uskoks lived on the Christian-Muslim frontier, and they invoked Europe's struggle against Islam to justify their often bloody deeds. As Bracewell demonstrates, however, their actions were also shaped by the maze of local political and economic rivalries, social conflicts, and confessional antagonisms. In a book that tests the concept of the social bandit, the author analyzes the motives that guided the uskoks and distinguishes these from the factors that impelled various elements of the local population to support them.

The Uskoks of Senj: Piracy, Banditry, and Holy War in the Sixteenth-Century Adriatic, by Catherine Wendy Bracewell

Review

"The Uskoks of Senj is a study of piracy, privateering, and banditry in an area stretching from the Adriatic Bay of Kotor to Istria, and along the military frontiers of three empires―Habsburg, Ottoman, and Venetian. Complemented by a splendid choice of published sources, the book is an exemplary contribution to the history of the sixteenth-century Adriatic and Balkans."―American Historical Review

"Bracewell explains with care why the uskoks were able to provide a vehicle for the expression of a political and social identity for the people of the border. This book not only brings the uskoks into the light but also is a pathbreaking study of the nature of group identity and popular political consciousness in the sixteenth century."―Sixteenth Century Journal

"Bracewell delves into the cultural and political attributes that transformed the coastal town of Senj into a crusading fortress. She also strives to ascertain exactly who undertook the hazardous and often ineffectual labor of combating the Ottoman 'Turk,' and why they did so. Bracewell argues that frontier culture shaped the Uskoks and their ethos. It forced them to be obstinate and shockingly pitiless."―Journal of Modern History

A detailed analysis of a little known period of history By Frankie Paddo Bracewell's book chronicles the rise and fall of the Uskoks and their (largely unrecognized) role in the shaping of modern Europe. The book is enlightening in its depiction of the Uskok "pirates" of the Adriatic ( from Senj in Croatia) as the last bastion between Islam and Christianity. The Ottoman Empire extended to the South of of the Uskok enclave of Senj. This frontier (in modern Croatia) is where the Ottomans, the Austro-Hungarians and the Venetians converged, all with their own agendas. The result is a engrossing history lesson in in war, peace, diplomacy, religion, negotiation, political deals and merchant trade. Bracewell's book analyses the customs and culture of the Uskoks as well as their battle against not only the Ottoman Empire, but also Venice and eventually (their ally) Austria. A stimulating, well annotated, but not light read.

Best Ebook The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico, by Miguel Leon-Portilla, Lysander Kemp

For hundreds of years, the history of the conquest of Mexico and the defeat of the Aztecs has been told in the words of the Spanish victors. Miguel León-Portilla has long been at the forefront of expanding that history to include the voices of indigenous peoples. In this new and updated edition of his classic The Broken Spears, León-Portilla has included accounts from native Aztec descendants across the centuries. These texts bear witness to the extraordinary vitality of an oral tradition that preserves the viewpoints of the vanquished instead of the victors. León-Portilla's new postscript reflects upon the critical importance of these unexpected historical accounts.

By S Hagelin This account uses narratives written by Aztecs and other native american groups around Mexico (the Aztec capital city) conquered by Cortes in the 1500s, presenting a perspective unknown to most.I grew up in Mexico City surrounded by evidence of the Aztecs as well as the Spanish, without a clear understanding of what happened to create the cultural mixture I saw there. As an adult, I read portions of a number of accounts of the conquest of Mexico, all based on Spanish sources. When you read these things, you're struck with amazement that they could happen and you wonder how much was only the Spanish interpretation of what they were told. Did the Aztecs really think the Spaniards were gods? Did Cortes and his men really just march into Mexico City as guests and then take Moctezuma captive? What were each of the groups thinking in this clash of opposing cultures? The Spanish, (for religious reasons?), wiped out most Aztec records, which were written in picture form. Their general propaganda treated Cortes as a hero. But when I was growing up, there was a strong movement towards painting Cortes as a weak, crippled, diseased man -- a disgusting figure. There are murals that portray him this way. And in the middle of the city, the rediscovered Templo Mayor stands mostly underwater, with roughly 8 feet protruding, as a silent testimony to the culture wiped out in the conquest. I was left with the question, "What happened?"I was fascinated and moved as I read "Broken Spears". They spoke of terrible omens... they were expecting tragedy. They were aware of the Spanish ships the moment they landed and the Aztec emperor sent envoys to watch them, and later to communicate with them. The unfolding story may sound stark and boring to those who haven't studied the conquest of Mexico, but to me it filled in a vital missing piece. It doesn't matter whether these stories are eye witness accounts or not because they paint the Aztec impression of the conquest vividly. They didn't understand the revulsion and horror the Spaniards must have felt at their human sacrifices, but they were appalled at the senseless slaughter Cortes's men and allies engaged in.This is not a book for a weak stomach. Some of the descriptions are graphic. Some of the pictures show chopped off limbs and heads. It's not a masterpiece of excellent writing, either. That is not what makes this book valuable. It invites you into the heart of the Aztecs before their pride was broken and their people subjugated.

The book is a translation of Nahuatl writings. See- the Spanish provided an alphabet which the Aztecs did not have prior to Spanish arrival and then the Aztecs applied the alphabet to their native Nahuatl language and began writing. The only concern a reader should have is accuracy- the documents of the account were written 10 years and more after the fact. A tip when reading: start with Chapter 14 which summarizes all the events, then read Chapters 1 - 13 which elaborate on events in detail, and finally conclude with chapters 15 - 16. I highly recommend this book for anyone studying Colonial Mexico History or persons who want to know more about Aztecs and their culture.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The conquest of Mexico from indigenous perspectives. By a.e.and This book combines accounts from several, sometimes conflicting, sources to provide a better understanding of the conquest of Mexico. Something important to note is that the title is a bit inaccurate- not all the informants were Aztecs! Many were from neighboring groups who were ruled by and forced to pay tribute to the Aztecs, but not Aztecs themselves. This is important to note because some of these people were not very happy under Aztec rule and their accounts express this. The author gives background information at the beginning of each chapter about the sources used which is really helpful in sections where the accounts differ as it can help to expose biases and broaden understanding of the events. I think this book is really important because it was a reminder to me that no history text is flat-out truth and at this point, no amount of investigation will tell us exactly what happened during this time period. All that said, the actual writing of the book is pretty dry. I had to read this for a class, and although I find the subject fascinating, I probably wouldn't have gotten halfway through it if I'd picked it up for pleasure reading!

Mine is the Kindle edition which is a reformatted version of the original book published in 1918.The author was a prolific author and popular in his time. He died in 1940 and was the author of a large number of fictional works and short stories. He also wrote a dozen non-fiction works including CRESCENT AND IRON CROSS which was published at the end of World War I.Benson writes well, but his style reflects the affectations of Victorian authors. Younger readers might find it a bit of a slog. It's worth it, though. Benson describes some of the worst parts of the Armenian genocide carried out by the Turks. The Armenians were a Christian minority within the Ottoman Empire and millions of them were murdered by the Muslim Turks once World War I got underway.Turkey was an ally of Imperial Germany and Benson sprinkles his graphic descriptions of mass murder with phrases blaming the "Prussian molochs" for inciting the Turks to destroy their Chrisian minority. Coming at the end of a world war which the British and their allies blamed on Germany, this is understandable. Later works do not depict this very real campaign of genocide as being a consequence of German meddling. In fact, some of the best eye-witness accounts of it come from German observers.Throughout all the torture and mass murder, there is an eerie resemblance to the early phases of Hitler's Holocaust against the Jews, especially the operations of the SS Einsatzgruppen in Poland. "Who alive still speaks of the Armenians?" Hitler reportedly asked. The author does and his book is one of the first to do so. I gave it four stars for its pioneering effort. I took one off because I'm descended from Prussians myself. If you're interested in World War I, the Middle East, Turkey, Armenia or mass murder, you'll find this to be a useful reference book. Benson pulls no punches in describing what happened.

But I guess history is full of events like this, even in todays news By Mike Regan Historically interesting as I did not know much about the subject.I am not sure when this book was first published, I assumed some time after the first world war.It is hard to believe that human beings can be so cruel. But I guess history is full of events like this, even in todays news.

Part performance script, part poetic endeavor, part philosophical meanderings, 99 Problems to be told to a plant & The Excavation of Its Future Memory engages words with and through the material they find themselves embedded in/amongst. The project was first intended to be set of aphorisms as part of a performance script performed and displayed alongside plants. The first set of aphorisms accumulated through a spiraling-out from an original set of 13, not necessarily mimicking the growth of a plant or the golden ratio particularly, but following the writer's own convictions and rhythms. The second half, a meditation and index of the first 99 problems was written some years later; returning impossibly and expanding gregariously the pertinent issue of where the grass meets the ground by providing a possible and probable ground from where the leaves of the 99 aphorisms sprouted. Where exactly is this text? Is it on the page or in the photo of the page, in reading it aloud or performing it or is it an archive of a performance of writing it? Where does one thing become another, and what have our distinctions done for us anyhow?

The format suggests an archeological field that needs to be explored in order to uncover the artifacts of human thought hidden in aphorisms and conversations with plants. The exploration requires careful digging, but brings the reward of finding gems of meaning about life. Meaning comes from listening to what is perceived. The image of 'briefcase' for example gives meaning to the business of life we carry around with us, what we try to get done in order to be successful. What is the business of the plant, to live, to bear seed, to provide for the future life? Interesting, different approach to discovering meaning.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the disaster by survivors and rescuers *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “There were scenes of horror on the General Slocum and on shore such as it would not be decent to set down on paper…” – J.S. Ogilvie, History of the General Slocum disaster by which nearly 1200 lives were lost by the burning of the steamer General Slocum in Hell gate, New York harbor, June 15, 1904 (1904) There is a popular saying that claims timing is everything, and in no other field of study is that truer than in history. For instance, under normal conditions, a ship that sank with more than 1,000 passengers aboard – most of whom died – would be big news, yet today the sinking of the PS General Slocum is often overlooked if not entirely forgotten. While it might have generated the type of publicity and reaction of the Johnstown Flood of 1889 or the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 under normal circumstances, deadliest disaster in New York City’s history before 9/11, and the second deadliest maritime disaster in peacetime in American history has become something of a historical footnote. On June 15, 1904, an annual gala was held on the passenger ship as it steamed up the East River, with about 1,400 people from St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Consisting mostly of German immigrants, the boat was packed with women and children, and when a small fire started on the ship shortly after the trip began, faulty equipment was unable to put it out or stop it from spreading. On top of that, the lifeboats were tied up and the crew, which never conducted emergency drills, was unprepared for a potential disaster. When parents put life preservers on their children and then had them enter the water, they soon learned that the life preservers were also faulty and didn’t float. As the disaster unfolded, over 1,000 passengers burned to death or drowned, many swept under the water by the East River’s current and weighed down by heavy wool clothing. Few people on board knew how to swim, exacerbating the situation, and eventually the overcrowded decks began to collapse, crushing some unfortunate victims. In the end, the General Slocum sank in shallow water while hundreds of corpses drifted ashore, and the fallout was immediate. The captain was indicted for criminal negligence and manslaughter, and the ship’s owner was also charged. While the captain would receive a 10 year sentence, the company in charge of the General Slocum got off with a light fine. In a somewhat fitting postscript, the ship was salvaged and converted into a barge, only to sink once again during a heavy storm in 1911. Time heals all wounds, but in the case of the Slocum disaster, the wounds weren’t so much healed as overshadowed. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire took over 100 lives in New York City in 1911 and led to calls for serious workplace reforms, and a few years later, World War I began in Europe. With that, much of the sympathy Americans previously felt for the loss of over 1,000 German lives on the Slocum evaporated. The Sinking of the General Slocum: The History of New York City’s Deadliest Maritime Disaster chronicles the fateful chain of events that led to one of the worst tragedies in American history. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the General Slocum like never before, in no time at all.

Very interesting read, sad By Modupe Hendricks To be honest I never heard of the ship by the name of General Slocum and therefore, I did not know that the disaster on board the ship was the second worst ship related disaster in US history. This book was both brief and concise. I guess one of the reasons why this disaster is not common knowledge is because the passengers on this ship were primarily women and children who were working-class German immigrants who lived in one of the boroughs of New York City. The victims were primarily from St. Mark’s Episcopal Lutheran Church. It’s hard to believe from an early 21st century perspective that there were no laws that regulated that equipment on ships should be seaworthy and the cruise employees properly trained in their use. Having been on several cruises, I can safely say that the crews are trained to assist passengers in an emergency, and the passengers have at least one emergency drill during their trips. I recommend that everyone should read this book to understand why the federal government has created many rules and regulations that seem wasteful and stupid; nevertheless, the rules tend to be an enacted for the safety of the consumer.

The saxophone is arguably the most iconic of all instruments, but with its graceful form and soulful tone it's easy to forget that it's still a machine. It's a complicated machine, too, and even a slight fault in the mechanism can affect the way it feels and plays. This innovative manual explains clearly and simply how the mechanism functions and what can be done to maintain it, as well as to improve its performance with professional set-up techniques, with few or no specialist tools. This manual is essential reading for everyone who plays the saxophone.

Leonard Haynes Books are not new to me, having bought them and used them in the past to work on my vehicles, so when I read that they had engaged Stephen Howard, a renowned sax repairman in England, to write an "everything you want and need to know about saxophones" book I was very curious, as Haynes books were all about cars and motorcycles in the past. Turns out this is a truly great book for all sax players or musical instrument repair techs! It is filled with lots of historical info that helps you understand the progressive changes in the saxophone over the years, almost all based on Stephen actually playing and/or working on the current and older saxes. As one of those players that loves the "vintage" saxes (I own Conn "Artist" models - both Alto (1932) and tenor (1929)) so can totally relate and agree with Stephen's assessments about the changes over the years!Even though I don't intend to do any major overhauls myself, this book is an invaluable resource, filled with common-sense advice on care, repair, and playing of the saxophone. The layout is modern and filled with great photos that help the reader fully grasp what Stephen is explaining. If you are a sax player...from beginner to Pro...you need to get this book!! Great reading and great resource!! This is NOT your father's Haynes automobile repair manual!! ;-)

Something for every player who's not already repairing his axe By James Bjork By way of background: I have played the saxophone for 32 years, and I earned a bachelor's degree in music with sax as my instrument of choice. Having gone in another direction (science) professionally for the day job, I am a skilled "weekend warrior" who earns thousands a year playing the majority of Saturday evenings, but do not consider myself anything like a recording artist.Despite a long history of playing the sax, I have always just taken it to my tech when anything but the slightest issue went wrong. Therefore, I had always wanted to learn more about the "guts" of the sax and its mechanistic operation, if nothing else to save a few bucks (or should I say "quid"?) on more mundane fixes or even diagnostics if something is clanking or some notes sound stuffy.Select portions of this book, especially the parts about lubrication (such as the very best oil to use) and checking for and tweaking regulation of the keywork-- nails it for me!This book is clearly written to span the entire range of expertise with the saxophone, from the prospective first-time buyer of a sax, to the technically proficient handyman that is on the verge of giving a go to stripping and rebuilding a sax (that does not have any mechanical/structural damage). Therefore, the first two or three chapters were of little use to me, but so what? At $23 or so from this site, the "sweet spot" chapters that meet me where I'm at as a handy-man (not terribly proficient) and the final chapters with guidance on more ambitious interventions should I get brave down the road) make it a worthwhile purchase. In sum, the book has great, to-the-point, myth-busting writing, excellent studio-quality photography, and ample diagrams of key concepts and parts. This manual IMO has something to offer pretty much any player who is not already comprehensively repairing his or her own axes. It will meet every one else where they are. Previous reviewers who knock this tome for being too rudimentary miss its intention IMO, and are probably at the expertise level where they should be obtaining materials and training in full-blown sax tech.Despite how it is likely that moderately experienced players may not need much of the introductory material, and how it is likely that many players like me will not go so far as to replace and seat pads, the value of the comprehensive span of material for the price, coupled with high production quality of the book earns it five stars. I think the maintenance chapters alone make it worth purchase by parents of students who are really giving the sax a go past the initial trial period of a rental.

That's the book that should be packed with every instrument By Darth Tone While it won't repair a repair shop bible, this beautiful book will tell the interested amateur how to care for his/her instrument. What can be done at home, what maintenance does an instrument require, what is best left to the professional technician. It teaches analytic skills that help you find out what exactly is wrong. It tells you what steps are involved in handling a fault (so you can decide if it's for you or rather not). And it tells you about how to these problems with the best results. That's what's so great about all Haynes books - the practical approach, the non-intimidating explanations, the "best practices" from seasoned technicians. This book is no exception.

"The Perfect Gift" is a nice introduction to the upcoming romance novel featuring Nora and Vittorio as adults By Lynda Dickson - Books Direct This review is for "The Perfect Gift" by Lyn Horner.Vittorio Medina is 16 years old when he leaves the Taylor farm where he grew up and where his mother works as a cook. He takes a job at the neighboring Crawford-Devlin ranch to keep away from temptation in the form of 12-year-old Nora, daughter of David and Jessie Taylor. Vito returns to the Taylor farm on Christmas Day and sparks fly. When Nora's heart is broken, her mother gives her the perfect gift in the form of a glimpse into her future. Will Jessie's revelation lead to happiness or put everyone in danger? We'll have to wait and see.Nora comes from a special family. Her mother can "see" things before they happen and her Uncle Tye is "sensitive" to what other people are feeling. These characters, along with Nora's extended family, have previously featured in the author's "Texas Devlins" series. While some details seem irrelevant to this story, I'm sure fans of the "Texas Devlins" series will be glad to catch up with some old friends. This novella gives us a lovely insight into how Christmas Day was celebrated in 1885, especially with respect to the types of presents the children received, and in relation to the specific roles of the men and women. I was pleased to see the author not only concentrate on the developing romance between Nora and Vittorio, but to also portray the loving relationship of the older married couple, David and Jessie Taylor. This is a nice introduction to the upcoming romance novel featuring Nora and Vittorio as adults. A glossary of the Spanish terms used would be helpful.I received this book in return for an honest review.Full blog post: http://booksdirectonline.blogspot.com/2015/11/silver-belles-and-stetsons-by-lyn-horner.html

I enjoyed this book and the various literary styles of the authors. All of the stories were well written; however there were a couple that I felt could have been tweaked a bit to make them more interesting and less simple. A story that weaves intrigue into the story line is more likely to hold the interest of the reader. The majority of these autors managed to do just that. Overall, the time settings were historically accurate in description of time, place and dress and language. The characters were well represented in each story. All of the stories were acceptable as far as clean wriiting and language. There was something in this book that should satisfy any reader who enjoys stories set in the past. I would definitely recommend this book to readers who love immersing their imaginations in a time gone by.

Akkadian Dynasty is my area of study and this book is utterly, completely wrong! The kings of this powerful dynasty are Sargon the Great; Manis-Tusu; Uru-Mush; Naram-Enzu and Shar-Gani-Sherri.You wuldn't find that out in this book. And the Appendices are not provided, where the chronologies might have helped out.Do NOT spend any money on this junk.

One woman. Three dudes. No regrets.

College was supposed to be Andi Miller’s training ground for the real world. Instead, it’s her final Saturday night in her college-grade apartment, and she’s still sheltered as hell. Why? Because of her three adorable roommates—Reed, Cooper and Simon.

Determined to have one date where the overprotective trio doesn’t scare the guy off, Andi sneaks out for the night. And almost lives to regret it.

When Reed, Cooper and Simon rescue Andi from a bad situation in the basement of a sex club, they decide it’s time for the kid gloves to come off. Since their early college days, they’ve been not-so-secretly fighting amongst themselves to spark her next smile, her next laugh.

They’ve already done a lot of surviving together, and now it’s time to thrive. At the risk of ruining a beautiful friendship, the men set out to turn their hands-off live-in arrangement into a weeklong learning experience where they become Andi’s sex education teachers.

Except none of them realize their newfound intimacy will make it impossible to say goodbye on graduation day.

Warning: When a woman and three very different men all come together, there’s a chain reaction of epic proportions. Please keep a cold shower on standby. Contains a very brief scene of attempted assault.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Oh so Sexy By deb1210 Andi Miller is in her final week of college before graduating and moving to start her dream job. She's always wanted any one of her roommates, but never acted upon her attraction to them. She realizes she's been living a rather sheltered life and her college days are supposed to be for experimentation right? Since she can't act on any of her attractions-no matter how tempting, she breaks out to have a night of mind altering sex. She sneaks out to a sex club with a date, to see what the hype is all about. She almost ends up regretting it when the guy takes advantage of her.Reed, Cooper, and Simon rescue Andi from the bad situation she found herself in, and they decide enough is enough. They have all loved her in their own way. They scared off any guys she may have been interested in and secretly waged war on each other for her affections. When they find out what she was attempting to do, they decide it's high time they teach her what they know. They can finally indulge in what they thought they could never have by each having a night with her alone, and then a night of togetherness. But they were all unprepared for the connection they got. Can they really say goodbye after that?? Do they want to?? But how can it work in today's society??This book is a whirlwind of emotions! It's a quick read but it really packs a punch. I loved Andi and how she had a special bond with each of her roommates. There was no way she could choose just one. Each of her roommates were very respectful of her and never crossed the line. Until that one night. I loved how Andi explored her connection with each of them separately before diving straight into a menage situation. It firmed up how each one brought something different to the table. And when they are all together? Hot, crazy, no holds barred sex! Whew! This is a storyline that we've seen before-forbidden lust with roommates, but Jayne Rylon does a phenomenal job of not rushing the storyline or the emotions that go along with it! Being a novella you would think that things zip right on by, but Rylon lets the story develop and unfold as they feelings do, so you never feel rushed or wrapped up with a bow too quick! I loved the ending and how it occurred-everybody independent of the others-knowing what they had to do for themselves!4-Ever Theirs is a red-hot read that I whole-heartedly recommend. I would definitely love to catch up with them in a future book!4.5 stars/5 flamesI was gifted a copy of this book for the express purpose of an honest review. The review and rating are solely my opinion and in no way was I compensated.

Are cows holy? Anyway… that was completely off the topic. 4-Ever Theirs was a SMOKING HOT book! I wish it was a little longer but, it looks like it may be a part of a new series Four To Score at least that is what I am hoping. So I am happy with that. Also, if you need a short erotic read then this is your book! This is Andi Miller’s story with 3 men… Reed, Cooper, & Simon. I love that each of these men come with their own personalities. I won’t give you a synopsis because Jayne Rylon does a good job with it. But, if you love reading about ménages then you will love this book. This book was not an ARC. But, I will publish on my blog because I love reading Jayne Rylon’s Books. I give 4-Ever Theirs 5.0 sponge worthy stars.

Antonio 4-Ever Theirs is a quick smoking hot read by the mistress of multiples. This story has some angst, some fear, and a whole lot of sizzling sex. Andi Miller may be smart and gifted but she is a bit naïve partially because her whole social life throughout college revolved around her 3 hunky roomies. Now she is facing graduation and moving on with her life. The guys not wanting to scare her have never made a move on her but when she gets in a frightening situation everything comes out into the open. Will sex ruin their friendship? Can she have sex with them and say goodbye? Is hers the only heart involved? Let Jayne Rylon show you just how good it can be.

Free PDF Ebook The Week of the Hero, by Bob Caudle

The Week of the Hero is set in Fort Worth, Texas in the early 1960's. The story is built around a week in the life of a high school student and how he and those around him deal with a sudden change of fortune in his life. The flavor of the story emanates from the times and the setting including observations about being raised in post-World War Two America. Intermixed is an effort to reveal the jumbled world of teenaged angst and maturation. The work also attempts to take an honest, if hard, look at a southwestern urban setting in the latter stages of segregation. While the story begins at a Friday night football game, it is not a sports novel. Football, and its impact upon American culture, is an undercurrent of the broader story about growing up in the last days of perceived American innocence. It was a time prior to the tumult of Vietnam, the challenging fruition of desegregation, horrific assassinations and the turmoil of Watergate, each of which played a role in a loss of trust in America the Beautiful. A major twist to the story leads to an examination of the world in which a generation known as The Baby Boomers was raised. In the end this is a slice of life story about a young man growing up and dealing with the opening salvo of a country in transition. Portions of the work may be hard to read because of some difficult and potentially offensive language.

Not just another Friday Night Lights By GaiasBliss An intricate and engrossing tale that probes beyond the seemingly superficial surface of small town football. Offering unique and personal insight into the inner workings of a post WWII community, the struggles that both parents and teens wrestle with (while the parents try not to strangle the teens before they reach adulthood), the difference between what is fair and what is right, and a delightful thread of history woven in for good measure.

A look at the REAL 1960's By Amazon Customer While the book contains an interesting and entertaining story line, the more you read, the more you feel like you have stolen a peek into a private diary. Insights and exposed feelings and perspectives seem to add extra punch to the events depicted. The reader will often identify with the emotional roller coaster the main character rides throughout the story. Bob Caudle has successfully merged fact and fiction....unless you were there, most readers will find it difficult to discern between the two. My only regret is that the book is about the week of the hero....I wanted it to be the MONTH of the hero..

Mittower “Discover Cape Cod” is a great read about several different areas of the Cape. It includes information about the history, modern day Cape Cod, and take-a-ways with regard to actives, sites, and places to eat. I really enjoyed the photos. The photos are of maps, historic events, and places of interest. They provoke thought that makes you wonder “what was it like when this picture was taken?" Each section gives the reader an insight to a part of the Cape with the author’s notes at the end of each chapter about her personal experiences. It’s clear that she spent so much time researching the history, and, having spent so much time there, is able to lend her personal knowledge and love of the area. If you ever decide to visit, this would be a great resource to help you understand where the history lies and places to visit while you’re there. It is a true travel guide and fun to read!

I am savoring this book, because [sadly] my next trip to the Cape might not be for a while, but I will update my review as soon as I finish it.Discover Cape Cod is sure to appeal to any armchair traveler or history buff, or to anyone who appreciates a fine collection of [non-fiction] short stories. The various tales are clearly thoroughly well researched and provide historical context, while the corresponding "experience" sections bring each story into the present and make it almost tangible. Higher-tech electronic resources have become indispensable for the most up-to-date, detailed travel information, but a timeless tome like this deserves a place on the shelf, and will never go out of style.

Borkowski The muscular arm extending into the Atlantic Ocean known as Cape Cod has a rich history dating back to before the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims when they landed and explored what is now Provincetown in 1620. I was delighted to find many of the finest cultural moments since then included in Ms. Kelley's book, which engages and enlightens the reader, while adding to the canon of our local history. Assuredly, no dry history here, it unfolds like a great mystery story, for there are many mysteries still to be explored. I highly recommend this book as it certainly has lead me to some interesting new things to explore as well as correct some stories I thought I knew well.Stephen H.
