The First World War is tremendously significant to India's history. Largely considered a European war, it actually involved the participation of more than a hundred countries, allowing for it to be also known as, The Great War. In 1914, it was thought by Indian political leaders, that offering support to the British would further the cause of India's independence. Accordingly, Indian soldiers were sent to fight alongside the British in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), Egypt, Palestine, France, Aden, Belgium, East Africa, Gallipoli and Salonika. About twenty-five princely states contributed over 26,000 combatants. The Dalai Lama offered his support through Tibetan troops, and Gurkhas were deployed from Nepal as well. They accompanied Britain's soldiers in the artillery, cavalry, infantry, engineers, signals service, sappers, and miners, arms of the army. Indian services to Britain extended to the Royal Navy as well as the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service.Indian troops who fought in Europe, had stepped outside their homeland, across the kala pani, for the first time. The sophistication of the artillery used abroad, required remarkable adaptation on the part of the soldiers. The drastically different landscape and colder weather was a shock as well. Socially too, they felt displaced among the Europeans, with their vastly different cultures and mannerisms. This was a very new scenario for Indian men; to fight side-by-side the people who were their colonizers back home. Though the Indian combatants received care matching their British counterparts, a close eye was kept on their outings, making them feel trapped. The entire experience of fighting overseas was culturally alienating for many Indians, as mentioned in their letters home, which were also often subject to military censorship.Though mentally ill equipped to deal with an emotional and physical relocation as vast as this, Indian soldiers fought valiantly. Inder Singh, in a letter back home from the Somme in September 1916, wrote, 'It is quite impossible that I should return alive. [But] don't be grieved at my death, because I shall die arms in hand, wearing the warrior's clothes. This is the most happy death that anyone can die'. By the end of the war, about 60,000 troops from India had fought for Britain. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded and over 13,000 gallantry medals were earned. Despite India backing it s efforts during the Great War, Britain s denial to grant India independence, created conflict and unrest among Indians, leading to the beginning of the uprising for independence. The author, Captain Amarinder Singh is himself a product of the Indian army. He served as ADC to the GOC-in-C, Western Command, during the 1965 war with Pakistan. A published military historian, he painstakingly retraces the footsteps of the Indian battalions during the First World War, using official battle details, war diaries, and maps.

About the Author Bracha Weisbarth was born in the Ukraine in 1938. When she was three years old, the German Army entered and occupied the region where her family lived. To survive, her parents escaped to the forest with her, a sister, a brother, two uncles, an aunt, and a cousin, and then established a small partisan unit to fight the Nazi enemy. After liberation, Bracha's family lived for three years in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany, before going to Israel in 1948, where she grew up. Bracha served in the Israeli Army and completed her education at the Hebrew University. Bracha says, “My own children kept asking me how I survived the Holocaust – and I kept telling them little bits and pieces of what happened to our family during that terrible time. They were amazed to learn that there were Jewish partisans who fought against the Germans.”

I did not put this book downuntil I had read the last page and closet the book.I have added this book to my Holocaust library ofover 500 books with pride. Learned something newreading this book......the villagers did not go into theforest to look for Jews because of their superstitiousthoughts that evil spirits lived in the forest.

From the preface:  "The late convulsions in Greece and Turkey, and the consequent revival of all the mis-statements which, during the War, flowed from ignorance or malice, render the publication of this book particularly opportune. Mr. Abbott deals with his subject in all its aspects, and presents for the first time to the British public a complete and coherent view of the complicated circumstances that made Greece, during the War, the battle-ground of rival interests and intrigues, from which have grown the present troubles. In this book we get a clear account of the little-understood relations between the Greek and the Serb; of the attitude of Greece towards the Central Powers and the Entente; of the dealings between Greece and the Entente and the complications that ensued therefrom. Mr. Abbott traces the evil to its source—the hidden pull of British versus French interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the open antagonism between M. Venizelos and King Constantine. All these subjects are of acute interest, and not the least interesting is the last. The persecution of King Constantine by the Press of the Allied countries, with some few good exceptions, has been one of the most tragic affairs since the Dreyfus case. Its effect on the state of Europe during and since the War is remarkable. If King Constantine's advice had been followed, and the Greek plan for the taking of the Dardanelles had been carried out, the war would probably have been shortened by a very considerable period, Bulgaria and Rumania could have been kept out of the War, and probably the Russian Revolution and collapse would not have taken place; for, instead of having Turkey to assist Bulgaria, the Allied forces would have been between and separating these two countries.

About the Author George Frederick Abbott (born 1874, died 13 March 1947 at Tunbridge Wells) was an English war correspondent and author. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, taking the degree of B.A. in 1899. In 1900 he was sent by Cambridge University to Macedonia to make studies in the folk-lore of that region. He acted as special correspondent in southwestern Europe for several London newspapers until 1903. In 1905 he accompanied the Prince of Wales (later on, George V), on his tour of India. Besides contributing articles to many reviews and magazines, he wrote: * Songs of Modern Greece (1900) * Macedonian Folk-Lore (1903) * The Tale of a Tour in Macedonia (1903) * Through India with the Prince (1906) * Israel in Europe (editor, 1907) * Greece in Evolution (1909) * Turkey in Transition (1909) * The Philosophy of a Don (1911) * The Holy War in Tripoli (1912) * Greece and the Allies (1923) He was made Knight Commander of the Royal Hellenic Order of the Redeemer. He was married to 'Elizabeth' Wilhelmina Hay Lamond (1884-1957), an equalitarian feminist campaigner, and they had one son, Commander (E) Jasper A.R. Abbott, OBE, RN (1911-1960).

A neat history By Jetpack While the author has a very strong dislike for Venizelos, it's still a very interest read on the history of how Greece ended up in World War I. It really shows how different the world was just 100 years ago. Can you imagine landing 100K+ troops in another country without 24 hour TV coverage? My opinion of Venizelos was rather solidified by other WWI reading or Ataturk: The Biography of the founder of Modern Turkey, but he comes off even worse here.Easily recommend for any WWI history buff, and this is the free Kindle version. 3,683 locations in total.

U-Boot is the German term to refer broadly to submarines, and is short for Unterseeboot, literally "submarine boat". The objectives of the U-boat campaigns in both wars were the convoys carrying supplies from the US to Europe. The term U-Boot, followed by a number, such as U-Boot 47 indicates a specific vessel, while U-Boot Type II a particular class, the only U-boats that can be considered true submarines, and submarines, are those that belong to the Type XXI and Type XXIII. During the Second World War, the attacks of the U-boats were the main component of the Battle of the North Eastern, which lasted until the end of the war. During the early stages of the war and immediately after the entry of the United States, the U-boats were extremely effective in the destruction of merchant allies. Improvements in tactical convoys, sonar, the depth charges, the deciphering of the Enigma code used by the Germans and the range of escort aircraft served to turn the fate against the U-boats. At the end of the U-boat fleet suffered extremely heavy losses, losing 789 units (three British submarines captured) of 1157 (of which 25 Allied captured) and about 30,000 sailors on a total of 50.000. The German U-boats and Japanese submarines and Italian sank around 2,828 Allied ships, for a total of about 15 million tons. Between 1939 and 1942 the U-boats also bombed the oil fields of Florida and Americans of many coastal areas causing extensive damage; when the British found a way to decipher Enigma allies were able to predict the movements, yet the Germans did not interrupt the use of U-boats in the Atlantic. During World War II, the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) produced different types of U-boats, as the technology improved. In this volume are indicated in detail the characteristics of all the classes of U-Boot, from Type I to Type XXIII, in addition to the history of the U-boats that made the protagonists during the Second World War.

By Heather I love that, even if the books have their HEA, Jo realizes that not everything has been 100% resolved just by finding them finding their other half! I love these fill-in stories, because, even though we catch up with past characters in each book, these little snippets let us in just a little deeper. I've fallen in love with all of Jo's Inked Brotherhood and Damage Boyz. I'm happy to see that the heroes and heroines keep living, even in between each full novel!

The Things I Never Said is a short novella, just a short glimpse into what happened after Micah. What happens with Micah and Ev. It was cute and sweet, super short, but fun.Ev and Micah are in love. Things are going great until Micah starts acting strange. He won't talk to Ev about what is bother him so she doesn't know what to think. Is he over her? Does he want to break up? Or is there something on his mind and can she get him to talk? Like I said a quick read, but I loved the extra time spent with these characters. If you read Micah and enjoyed it you should pick up this story. It is free right now so why not?This review was originally posted to Jen in Bookland

I wasn't aware there was another brother, ex-cop Jake, since he was adopted when he was a baby ( I think he was introduced in Ivan's story.) His brothers Adam and Dylan Quinlan hired him to make sure the health/safety inspector, Astrid is accurately reporting her findings on a company the Quinlan brothers want to invest in. Jake came to her rescue when Cole Graves (owner of said company threatened her.) Since I'm unfamiliar with Jake, I feel like I'm in Astrid's shoes and getting to know him the same time she is. I can't wait for the next book on sister, Clara. There are many twist and turns which stops me from putting this book down. I received this as an ARC for my review.

You do not need to read their stories before you read this one, but it would be nice to know how Adam, Dylan, and Ivan all came to be. There are some descriptive sex scenes, so if you do not like that be forewarned. Otherwise those scenes and the others in the book were very good.Jake Quinlan recently reunited with his family after being adopted when he was a baby. He is currently working on tailing (following, reading emails, hearing phone conversations) one of his brothers health/safety inspection agents. His brothers are currently in the making of a deal for some technology and have hired their health and safety inspector to check it out. It is Jake's job to investigate everything the inspector does to make sure Dylan and Adam are being taken care of.Well that safety inspector is Astrid, and ever since he started following her around, Jake has fallen for her. Astrid moved to New York City to get away from an abusive, possessive ex-boyfriend. She is working for the Quinlan's to investigate that technology and unlucky for her, the owner of that technology tried to bully, bribe, and hurt her into making sure she tells the Quinlan brothers to accept his offer. Before he could get Astrid into his car to do who knows what with her, Jake swoops in and saves her. After the ordeal (a kiss was involved) Jake offers Astrid a drink because he can see she is shaken up. But can he hold in his feelings for her?Can Astrid get past the fact that Jake tailed her and open up to him?When danger comes for Astrid, can Jake keep her safe?I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Unfortunately, Graves project is not passing the safely inspections and Astrid, among other concerns, is finding evidence of tampering with employee safety records.Dylan and Adam Quinlan are looking at becoming investors in Graves’s project. They understand that that the Health and Safety Department is not going to share all of their findings and are also smart enough to realize that they probably need an independent opinion. What Astrid didn’t know is that Dylan and Adam have hired a private investigator to violate her privacy by tapping phone calls and intercepting email. Even more shocking was that the private investigator they have hired is their long lost brother Jake.Jake is drawn to Astrid, something he seems unable to resist and when he has to step into keep Astrid safe from Cole Graves, he knows he’s walking dangerous territory. Once he crossed the line, sit back and watch the sparks fly, and they won’t all fly in directions that you expect.As much as I enjoyed this story and in some ways it was my favorite. There were other moments that just didn’t resonate as true or felt glossed over. I felt a little “lost” reading this one because I haven’t read the book right before this one (Ivan’s story). Not sure if all the loose ends will be tied up for me but I’ll find out soon enough. I have completed Adam, Dylan, and Joseph’s story and I’m looking forward to Clara’s story coming out in January.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is a pretty good book By Agent8796 This is a pretty good book. It seems to be focused towards the already skilled painter. I have just started in digital illustration and concepts so it can be confusing at times. Often it'll say things like "Refine your painting" which is an empty statement to new people. It shows step by step methods for various kinds of mechanical/futuristic things with instructions worded to allow the artist to create unique pieces. Good for both the digital illustrator and the old fashioned illustrator.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Light after dark By Robin Photographer Lynn Saville discovers the virtues of artificial light in this collection urban work. It could be street, office or security lights, garish neon and shop decorators naked bulbs but they all create an intriguing palette of colors and shadows. After dark many of the buildings sites in the photos have enhanced texture created by light from different directions. On page ninety-one there's a fabulous shot of abandoned restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, beautifully framed against a black sky, even when not lit a large vertical neon sign saying JACK'S provides the color while the white brickwork changes into various shades of grey as it ages. A similar photo of a boarded up warehouse in Chicago provides an interesting display of ochre brickwork and red panels over the windows. Detroit, the urban ruins capitol of America, provides a brilliant straight on photo of the huge abandoned Michigan Central Depot lit by unseen spotlights from below.Empty stores and those being renovated seem to fascinate Lynn Saville, minus the merchandise means large expanses of glass and bare walls creating slabs of changing color depending how near they are to neon strips and spotlights used by interior decorators. Of the eighty photos in the book only one has a visible person suggesting that all this street night light is not used for most of the time. The photos were taken in various cities but without their daylight visible landmarks these places at night become an anonymous collection of shapes, shadows, color and silence.Lynn Saville has captured a worthwhile collection light and dark in her book.

Saville sees urban landscapes with a true artist's eye. These night scenes are at once desolate, mysterious and beautiful. They will not be forgotten any time soon.

In the previous book Tank was such a character aregent, cocky, sexy and a little intimidating but in this story you get to really see what type of man Tank really is and I just fell in love with. I can't go into a lot of detail because it will give it way. I definitely recommend this book.

What started as a terrible life experience, ended in an amazing love story! It had all the elements,to keep you riveted! Tank and Raina are meant to be together! I'm still loving the Iowa theme! Makes me want to go have a look around for all these biker clubs!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not what I expected By Amazon Buyer I ordered the paperback version of this book for genealogy research. I viewed the Kindle preview and expected the paperback would be the same thing. The paper book is pretty much unusable. The publisher scanned their original copy of the book and ran an OCR (optical character recognition) program against the image and put the raw fixed-font results into a tight 3-column per page format. Besides the many typos due to the inaccuracy of the OCR program, most of the generational linkage numbering is either missing or undecipherable. The original book's index page numbers do not correspond to the page numbers on the printed paper book leading to a complete inability to locate individual entries or to cite references. On the first page of this paperback, tightly squeezed into the first tri-column, are all these caveats by the publisher - not able to be previewed here on Amazon. There is also a URL to [...] with instructions to download an Internet copy of the original book using the barcode found on the back of the paperback (otherwise available for free at openlibrary.org). I don't mind spending money for a good reference volume, but in this case I feel my $28 were completely wasted.

Billy Joel once called it “an acoustic nightmare.” Rodger Waters called the place “a real compromise.” And Robert Plant said, “This is the first gig I’ve ever done that was rained out inside the building.” However, what they might not have understood at the time was that this place was a temple to all of us in South Florida. It was a sacred place where we would gather and worship at the altar of Hard Rock. It was where we went to hear angels sing. It was the place the rock god Brian Johnson screamed out, “Oh, Let there be rock!” I am talking about the Hollywood Sportatorium in the 1980s. I’m talking about a place in Rock ‘n’ Roll history that existed for 18 years as the only venue of its kind in all of South Florida to see rock music live. The Hollywood Sportatorium, or The Sporto as we called it, was the venue in South Florida where everyone came to play like Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Night Ranger, Poison, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Triumph, Foreigner, Twisted Sister and Van Halen just to name a handful. It was the place where we would all go to see all of our favorite bands. If you were a rock band and you never played the Sporto, then you just hadn’t made it to the top like Foreigner sang about in the song “Jukebox Hero.” The Sporto was an arena that held 15,532 rock souls and was THE place for live rock concerts in South Florida. The building does not exist anymore. However, it still stands in the four corners of my heart and soul. I can still see the whole place in my mind’s eye. I can still smell the cigarette and pot smoke in the air. If I close my eyes long enough, I can hear the sounds of the last Heavy Metal Band to ever play there, Judas Priest in September of 1988 singing “Turbo Lover.” Some of the best memories of my entire life lay forever in the four walls of the Hollywood Sportatorium. I heard some of the greatest bands the world of music had to offer. I heard bands right in the middle of their prime. I saw bands play before anyone knew who they were and I watched bands play long after their peak and everything in between. I stood witness to the greatest era in rock ‘n’ roll. I stood in abject awe watching and listening to the last generation of master musicians that could actually play their instruments. I came of age in a magical time in music. I was there and grew up during 1980’s Hard Rock scene.

Loved reading this book and reliving the experiences through your words. What great times, stories and musical comradery we had. I miss being at a show...the lights going out... And now you have seconds to jump the seats and get as close to the stage as you could. The Sporto made this all possible and I am privileged and glad this book exists. Thanks C. Found writing was choppy and support characters not very interesting. Spread through the last third of the book just to get through it. Disappointed as it was the first of the series I read but now am not interested in reading any others.

By Amazon Customer (April Renn/AprilR ) #4 in the "Dukes'Club", while, it can be read as a stand alone, I would recommend reading all the books. Each title is a delicious romp with quirky, witty characters, who face challenges head on and find their HEA. Fast paced, and a quick read!I enjoyed how Ms. Devon created a story that draws the reader in and keeps them turning pages. She also addressed Women's rights, mental illness, and gives the reader insight into how easy it was, in that era, to have someone committed to Bedham. A delicious Historical romp, one in which the reader finds many twists and turns, a few surprises, much passion, and a tale "All About The Duke" and the Lady who finds his heart. Absolutely fantastic!! Another hit for Ms. Devon!!
