SOE agent Violette Szabo was the daughter of an English father and French mother, and widow of a French army officer killed in action in North Africa in 1942. On her second mission she was captured by the Germans, interrogated and tortured, and deported to Germany, where she was eventually executed at Ravensbrück concentration camp. The bare bones of her story say nothing of the sabotage, gun battles, betrayal. Violette was the second woman ever to be awarded the George Cross, and she was immortalized in the film Carve her Name with Pride. What marks out this book is the simple, extraordinary fact is that is written by her daughter, Tania: she would have been two years old when she last saw her mother, the woman fellow agent Odette Churchill called "the bravest of us all."

By Kznalstud A story that needs to be read, it shows the horrors that existd in the 1930's till the end of World War II. It shows the mass horrors created by the Germans and makes a person wonder how the general population in Germany could not have known what their leaders, and fellow country men were doing to the Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, POWs, spies and anybody a leader did not like. It shows the courage and dedication that other people demonstrated in this time of conflict, especially one true woman patriot of the British SOE.

The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work, ascribed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, although modern scholars estimate the older sections (mainly in the Book of the Watchers) to date from about 300 BC, and the latest part (Book of Parables) probably to the end of the first century BC.  From the preface:  "THE object of this series of translations is primarily to furnish students with short, cheap, and handy text-books, which, it is hoped, will facilitate the study of the particular texts in class under competent teachers. But it is also hoped that the volumes will be acceptable to the general reader who may be interested in the subjects with which they deal. It has been thought advisable, as a general rule, to restrict the notes and comments to a small compass; more especially as, in most cases, excellent works of a more elaborate character are available. Indeed, it is much to be desired that these translations may have the effect of inducing readers to study the larger works. Our principal aim, in a word, is to make some difficult texts, important for the study of Christian origins, more generally accessible in faithful and scholarly translations. In most cases these texts are not available in a cheap and handy form. In one or two cases texts have been included of books which are available in the official Apocrypha; but in every such case reasons exist for putting forth these texts in a new translation, with an Introduction, in this series."

The American artist and naturalist Titian Ramsay Peale II (1799–1885) had a passion for butterflies, and throughout his long life he wrote and illustrated an ambitious and comprehensive manuscript. The book, along with a companion volume on caterpillars, was never published, and it resides today in the Rare Book Collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Now Peale’s color plates, lovingly prepared for the printer by the artist more than 100 years ago, will be published for the first time in this beautiful volume. At last, Peale’s life work, equivalent in scope and beauty to Audubon’s Birds of North America, will be available to a wide audience. The book includes a foreword by Ellen V. Futter and text by Kenneth Haltman and David A. Grimaldi that describes the art and science Peale brought to his extraordinary work. Also see: The Butterflies of Titian Ramsay Peale Notecards (978-1-4197-1806-9), The Butterflies of Titian Ramsay Peale Journal (978-1-4197-1805-2), and The Butterflies of Titian Ramsay Peale 2016 Wall Calendar (978-1-4197-1754-3)

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Titian Peale's butterflies: a publishing and natural science triumph By Merrily Baird On 25 August the New York Times devoted more than half a page in its Tuesday "Science Times" to heralding the imminent release of "The Butterflies of North America: Titian Peale's Lost Manuscript." That review was positive and noted that the volume was "mainly an art volume." Even so, the illustrated review could not adequately convey what a very extraordinary book the American Museum of Natural History, working with the top-flight art publisher Abrams, has offered us at a quite reasonable price. The book's several hundred color illustrations--lost to public view for 130 years after the death of Peale--are the star of the book. Also attractive are roughly a dozen page reproductions of Peale's field notebooks and the two pages of a "Prospectus" he produced, unsuccessfully it should be noted, to sell his study of the butterflies. Lifting the book beyond a simply beautiful catalogue of butterfly and caterpillar paintings is new material added by experts, chief among them Kenneth Haltman, who provided an excellent 13-page introduction. This essay covers a history of Peale's butterfly study and a biography of the artist, as well as an assessment of his work as a naturalist and the scientific quality of the butterfly illustrations. The "Butterflies of North America" will appeal in the first instance to lovers of butterflies and caterpillars. But it offers as well valuable information regarding the plants on which the insects feed, and it should inspire all who rejoice in the natural world.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Don't judge a book by its cover... By Amazon Customer This 3 star review is the result of an average between a top ranking 5 star for content, and a low ranking for binding. Its an expensive book, and the content is completely wonderful. I am so glad to have these images. However, I was shocked at the nature of the binding. How shocked-I returned it the first time because I thought there was some factory error, but the replacement book was put together the same way. The signatures of the book (the groups of pages) are exposed in the binding, that is, there is no book spine covering. The front cover of the book wants to pull free of the endpapers, and the raised bands across the exposed spine look like bands of glue. Everyone that has seen this has remarked on this-mostly, "what happened to the binding?" I don't think the binding is going to hold up to much handling, so be very careful with this. I can't tell if the signatures are stitched, but I can see that the edges are glued on the very edge, another indicator they are going to separate easily with handling. The content on the other hand...is wonderful. Expensive book, disappointing binding. The plates are beautiful, and so interesting to see this wide range of diversity that once was present-fascinating to see the species that are now thought to be extinct, and to recognize so many that are still with us.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. gorgeous book! By Ron Amiel high quality printed, on matt paper.plates are sharp. colours are vivid, so closer as possible to the original paintings.didn't like the fragile unbound spine of book.the American Museum of Natural History, is to be congratulated for sharing this masterpiece with us. hopefully more gemsfrom their unique library of illustrated works will follow.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Excellent resource for very serious Bible student By djbessbooks Eadie's commentary is a classic on the book of Ephesians. It does require a working knowledge of Biblical Greek. Eadie is able to do an intensely technical analysis of the book (including consideration of textual variants and commentary on the Greek text itself), while still also making practical and devotional observations which are very helpful. Eadie leaves you with the sense that you have really wrestled with the hard exegesis of a passage and and that you have gained from it a far greater awe of God, of the greatness of Christ, of the depths of your own depravity, and of the hope of a deeper walk with God. Again, it is for the very serious student of the Bible. One who is less than very serious or who does not want to labor over the Greek text will probably find the book hopelessly tedious. If however, one is willing to mine diamonds in concrete, you will find Eadie a truly rewarding expedition.

Growing old waiting By Sky2011 Story has the potential to be interesting, but the writer should have just created one book, not dole out the story in snippets that take 6 months to a year to read because the author hasn't released them in a timely manner. As a reader, you forget what went on previously because too much time has passed between books. I'm dropping this series as it is taking too long to release the series and I don't enjoy having to go back and re-read books just to refresh my memory in order to be able to read the latest release.

By Amazon Customer After waiting so long for this part I found I could not put it up there with the first two parts. Yes it picked up from part two but it left me empty and wanting more and not just part four but more... I looking forward to part four only in the hopes that Emma, Max and Jack are brought back together to love and learn about each other as they are meant to...and promises promises made from this author leave much to be desired so I'm afraid to return to the dragon series until several books have been written so no waiting is not necessary

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. excellent quality continuation By Margaret genre: scifi romancesetting: post zombie apocolypse Earthformat: part 3 of 5 serial; must read in orderThis book picks up where part 2 left off: with Max and Jack responding to a major attack. Like the previous two parts, this is an action packed story that takes place over a short time (about one day) and includes fascinating worldbuilding. The story focuses on Max and Emma, plus a few new people from the cyborg base and nearby human outpost under attack.Good characterization, consistent plot, highly recommended. Very few typos.

The authors writing has matured and the story line pulls you in. Brody is a fantastic character, full of life, acting like a lot of men do with the I don't want to be tied down. BUT, then a certain woman walks into his life and all that ideology walks out. Which is freaking brilliant! Seems as if the more the male or female, says they don't want to be involved in a relationship, the harder they fall when they meet there mate.I will tell all readers on the fence, BUT the whole series. Thanksgiving day goes fast and it will make a nice welcome calming to the end of the day.

Brody is a head strong second in command to his brother the Alpha and he really challenges him even though he knows better especially when it comes to his recently found mate named Kenna.Kenna and Brody are opposites and a pair that even though destined to be together really paranormal wise never should be. I loved this book and loved the sudden twist it had which kept you guessing.Fantastic read!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and the perfect starting point for you journey By John Finch The author of this book gives you a simple, easy-to-follow model of what he does to be a successful guitar teacher, never dropping below 20 students per week. If you're a guitar player and want to start your own teaching business from home, this is the most important book you'll need, and the perfect starting point for you journey. Richie Jenkin does an extraordinary job covering all of the most important and fundamental aspects of starting your own guitar teaching business from home.He covers the following topics as well as many others: the space you'll need (how it should look and feel), the inner game (guitar teaching mindset), attracting students (with a very in-depth and valuable section on how to make a great flyer, as well as info on websites, business cards, and other strategies), the teacher/student relationship (his main focus in my opinion). If you already play the guitar well, and haven't yet created your own successful teaching business, I have no doubt in my mind this book can help anyone get the incredible results Richie has maintained for many years. One thing I will mention is that The Heart and Soul of Teaching Guitar is not a technical book filled with lesson plans (such as chords, progressions, finger-picking exercises, etc.), however, he has a nice appendix at the end that has a list of resources where you can get these things. This book not only has great steps for starting and maintaining a profitable and fun teaching business, but it also strongly emphasizes the inner-game, the mindset, of being a great guitar teacher. It is a warm-hearted book, and you can tell the author really loves his students. I come from a marketing background, and I know the best way to have a long-life profitable business is to create "raving fans." Then they will spread the word about your business for you. One thing is for sure, I'm a raving fan of this book!If you're truly wanting to teach guitar, I would get this book first, then purchase additional books on things that you could help you derive lesson plans from. Unless, however, you're such a guitar stud that you know enough to just create your own lessons from scratch every time. If that's the case, then you might consider writing a book yourself :)

Schoenbach Jenkin is concise and clear, and he understands the two aspects of the subject of his book: how to build a teaching practice and how teaching can be done effectively and humanely. There are many guitar teachers who know their subject, i.e., music, but Jenkin also knows his real subject, people. He'll explain how he reaches out to each individual he is instructing. And he'll inspire the bored or aspiring teacher (of any subject) to reach inside for the heart and soul. He also happens to be a musical poet: homey, direct and deceptively simple; check out his cd's.

Richie's philosophy of tailoring his lessons to the students interests and abilities would make for a very enjoyable learning experience.Good roadmap for aspiring guitar or music teachers.

A shocking look into the twisted, lurid world of Nazi Germany’s film industry. In Nazi Germany, the cult of celebrity was the embodiment of Hitler’s style of cultural governance. Hitler’s rise to power owed much to the creation of his own celebrity, and the country’s greatest stars, whether they were actors, writers, or musicians, could be one of only two things. If they were compliant, they were lauded and awarded status symbols for the regime; but if they resisted—or were simply Jewish—they were traitors to be interned and murdered. This fascinating analysis offers a shocking portrait of a Hitler shaped by aspirations to Hollywood-style fame, of the correlation between art and ambition, of films used as weapons, and of sexual predilections. The Führer believed he was an artist, not a politician, and in his Germany, politics and culture became one. His celebrity was cultivated and nurtured by Joseph Goebbels, Germany’s supreme head of culture. Hitler and Goebbels enjoyed the company of beautiful female film stars, and Goebbels had his own “casting couch.” In Germany’s version of Hollywood, there were scandals, starlets, secret agents, premieres, and party politics. The Third Reich would launch filmmaker and actress Leni Riefenstahl to prominence by making her its own glorifying documentarian, most famously in The Triumph of the Will, the innovative propaganda film starring Hitler and widely considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. It is no coincidence that Eva Braun, Hitler’s longtime partner and wife for the two days leading up to their joint suicide, was a photographer, and in fact shot most of the surviving photographs and film footage of her lover. This book reveals previously unpublished information about the “Hitler film,” which Goebbels envisaged as “the greatest story ever told,” although it was ultimately trumped by the dictator’s own, real-life Wagnerian finale.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Review “There is nothing new in pointing out Hitler’s passion for Wagner and how it influenced his sense of theatricality. What is new is the combination of this analysis with an account of what happened to the German film industry from 1933 to 1945.”—Sunday Express

About the Author Michael Munn is a film historian and the author of twenty-five books, including Stars at War, The Hollywood Connection, Richard Burton: Prince of Players, and the bestseller John Wayne: The Man Behind the Myth. As a journalist he has written extensively on cinema, crime, ancient history, and World War II. He lives in Suffolk, England.

It seems like Hitler is an actor who has gone amok, and egged on by this propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. While reading the book, I was constantly reminded of Charlie Chaplin in the "Great Dictator" bouncing his inflated globe until it finally burst. The parallel seemed amazingly appropriate. Unfortunately for the world, Hitler was not the comedic character but rather a asocial charlatan, His obsession with Richard Wagner and "DIe Gotterdammerung" was especially revealing. The prophecy detailed in this last opera of the Ring Cycle most certainly came to pass. If Hitler, as master of the world, went down, then he would take the world with him. This book is an excellent and easy read, and I would recommend it for those persons interested in the psyche of Adolf Hitler.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A forgotten heroine, an INCREDIBLE story By Clement Finn "Miss U" is an incredible read of an amazing woman who refused to give up. She remained in the Philippines after war began even though she was ordered to leave. When her husband was imprisoned by the Japanese she still refused to leave. She was able to conceal her true identity by volunteering for the Red Cross under the pretense of being a Lithuanian national. Time and time again she eluded the Japanese as she smuggled all the food and medicine she could find to the American prisoners at the infamous Cabanatuan prison camp, where survivors of the Bataan death march were kept. She sold all of her personal possessions and then worked with a network of Catholic clergy and others who took great risks to help her. Her husband survived the Bataan death march but starved at the camp in 1942. When she became aware of this she decided very quickly to continue her work in the hopes of helping other prisoners who might not survive otherwise. As if that wasn't enough, she also provided assistance to Filipino guerrillas. But the Japanese finally caught on and imprisoned her. This is when you began to realize what a TITANIC figure Margaret Utinsky was. She survived the most brutal torture (told here in graphic detail) as the Japanese beat her, breaking her jaw among many other injuries. They hung her by her arms (after tying them behind her back!) and even forced her to kneel on a bench covered with split bamboo which cut into her legs deeply. But she would not give in and would not talk. Denied any medical care whatsoever she spent her nights in a grimy prison cell fortified only by the smallest rations of boiled rice. In the midst of this hell she decided to become a Catholic. It seems she was motivated primarily by observing the heroic clergy who assisted her, all of whom would perish, murdered by the Japanese. Her captors gave in finally and released her after a month. Friendly Filipinos brought her to a hospital in Manila. Despite a bad case of gangrene on one leg, she pulled through and miraculously, she did not have her leg amputated. You would think by this time that "Miss U" would have had enough, wouldn't you? No! After six weeks in the hospital she joined up with a guerilla group and spent the remainder of the war eluding the Japanese until a happy encounter one day with the U.S. Sixth army, which had finally arrived to liberate the Philippines. Mind you Margaret Utinsky did all of this as a volunteer, never in fact being a formal Army nurse. She was however an RN, having trained as one in the 1920s. This is a truly remarkable story which has never received the attention it deserved. In 1946 President Truman awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her incredible heroism and Congress gave her a paltry reimbursement of some nine thousand dollars for the personal property she sold to assist prisoners. This book was written in 1948 and one only hopes it enabled the poor author to live in some comfort despite lingering physical and psychological damage from her torture at the hands of the Japanese. She seems to have lived quietly enough until she developed heart trouble in 1966 and then died almost forgotten in 1970. Even worse, she was buried in an unmarked grave! That is a national disgrace. In his foreword to this book, General Wainwright(himself imprisoned by the Japanese for three years) said she "ran every risk and underwent torture to help the poor men behind the barbed wire...her gallantry and intrepidity were worthy of the best traditions of our country". Indeed they were, it seems there are no superlatives adequate enough to describe Margaret Utinsky. One ends this book at a loss for words. Her story was partly told and partly fictionalized in the movie "The Great Raid". It is clear that she deserves a movie of her own, and then some. Hollywood need not alter her story to make her larger than life. What she achieved and what she endured are beyond the realm of imaginative fiction. No one reading this story will find it easily believable and I lament very much that this book is long out of print. Used copies remain available but are often $60 or more. This is one case however, in which I would say it would be money well spent. It was a relief to find out that her grave finally received a modest marker in 2010 after forty years! This is a story that should be told and re-told of the tremendous efforts of one member of the "greatest generation" despite all odds. We can speak of her as someone worthy of emulation. We like to think we can emulate such people. But I am left wondering how that could ever be possible...

Utinsky's Affidavit by General Moore because my Aunt and Uncle where both in the Miss U underground movement. My uncle, Aka Fancy Pants was captured and tortured as well (maybe it's in the book) and my Aunt is still alive today, 93 years old who was friends with the Doctor and her daughter, they all played incredible roles in the group. The Doctor kept my uncle alive after he was tortured. My Aunt was just honored in a WWII 'Oral History' reception this week alongside other WWII vets. My whole family was from the Philippines and were in their 20's during the occupation and have endless powerful stories now burnt into my memory and heart of those told by my family including my dad and his sister's imprisonment as a 10 and 12 year old children since they were born to an American father, stories of my Aunt and uncles' survival as part of the Underground movement, underground fighters (guerillas), and one of the prisoners rescued in the Great Raid! The Movie, The Great Raid is a very close depiction according to my great aunt who was part of Miss U's Underground group...she said one of the only things that wasn't real in the movie was that in the group, they Never would have used real names, they each has Aka's! (probably in the book as well?). I just learned of this book and can't wait to read it and share it with my Aunt. Many do not realize the massive amount of abuse and torture that went on to over 75,000 American's and Filipino soldiers and even more civilians for 4 long years. My father was on the first ship liberated in 1945 and has lived a full, beautiful life here in the states quickly reunited by those family members who were bonded together by the horror and survival of that experience.

This book details the trials she went trough. It is well written and gives a vivid description of 32 days of interrogation at the hands of the Japanese. Very good history as well.

Wildlife photography is an adventure—and as any great adventure story unfolds, odds are, there are bound to be some great risks involved. Whether it’s the risk or the reward—or both—that motivates wildlife shooters, there is one pervasive truth: Preparation is key to success—and survival. In this book, Joe Classen approaches the art of wildlife photography from a hunter’s perspective. He teaches readers how to select and use the appropriate specialized photographic gear required for the rigors of wildlife photography—as you’d expect. However, he also teaches you how to mentally and physically prepare for an outing in which your wits must be as keen as your eye. Classen provides detailed insights into planning and packing for a wilderness adventure. Readers will learn how to securely pack their delicate photographic gear for a rugged, outdoor environment but will also learn how to choose and tote the best clothing for the site, accessories to ensure your personal safety, and even basic cooking and drinking requirements for days spent shooting in remote areas.Once you’ve scouted your location, you’ll learn how to track and lure your photographic subject using time-honored practices (calls—from lust to hunger, to anger and sloth; decoys; attractor scents; working invisibly, etc.) while “shooting” (your camera!) from a blind or stand—or, conversely, by using a more aggressive stalk-and-ambush approach. You’ll learn how to read animal behaviors—from eating to mating—and predict how, when, and where your best photographic opportunities will arise—and when your safety should be a greater concern than your shot. With this soup-to-nuts approach, readers will find, in this book, a compendium of information about wild-animal behavior, wilderness survival and safety, the art and science of photographic capture, and even storing and processing your prized digital files once you return home from your adventure. Armed with Classen’s suggestions and strategies, you’ll maximize your photo opportunities and increase the odds that your wildlife images are the mount-and-frame trophies for which you risked life and limb.

Wildlife Photography: Advanced Field Techniques for Tracking Elusive Animals and Capturing Magical Moments, by Joseph Classen

About the Author Joseph Classen is originally from St. Charles, Missouri. Located along the Missouri river, and nearby the mighty Mississippi, this historic town was founded in 1769 by Louis Blanchette, and was known as a launching pad for early explorers, traders, and immigrants who were heading west. St. Charles was a thriving trading community back in the day, it was the site of the famous Lewis and Clark Rendezvous, and it was also the familiar stomping grounds of individuals such as Daniel Boone. It was along those muddy rivers, immersed in that adventurous, pioneer spirit that his undying love of the outdoors was born.Throughout his entire life, from his earliest memories as a child, up until this very day, a passionate love of the natural world has possessed his soul. There has never been a time that his heart didn’t begin to beat faster at the very thought of heading outdoors for an adventure of one kind or another, no matter how big or small. His infatuation with Mother Nature has produced an unquenchable thirst which has taken him to some of the wildest, most unforgiving, and remote locations in the United States and Canada. In fact, that “call of the wild” certainly played a part in bringing him to the place he currently calls home: Kodiak Island, Alaska, one of the most beautiful and rugged places in the world. Over the last decade or so, he's shared his experiences and love of nature through various forms of media. He's written numerous books and articles on a variety of nature related topics, and was the host of an outdoors themed radio show for several years, been a member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association, and also work as an Alaskan photography, fishing, and wilderness guide. Please visit his website Wild Revelation for more information. (wildrevelation.com) His photography work has won awards, been published in numerous magazines, featured by conservation organizations and travel bureaus, and continues to gain worldwide exposure.

(I haven't found a better consolidated resource.) So too for anyone preparing for extended wilderness adventures where self sufficiency and thorough preparation are necessary for survival. I especially liked the suggested packing and gear lists. After 30 years of remote hunting and fishing adventures in Alaska, I found them to be comprehensive and updated with the most recent technology in high-performance gear. Joe's proven skill as a lifelong hunter shines through in his tips for approaching (even dangerous) wildlife for the best possible photographs. This book will satisfy all your gear and technique research requirements you are headed into remote wilderness with a fire burning in your soul for stunning wildlife and wilderness photography. Also, the book is full of some of Joe's stunning wildlife photographs that will definitely serve to ignite that fire!

Obregon There are a number of good books about wildlife photography that deal with photographic techniques, like focusing, exposure and composition. Fewer deal with what I call field craft, that is, taking care of one's self in the wilderness at least as well as your equipment and then finding and getting close enough to the wildlife to capture the image.Joseph Classen deals almost exclusively with field craft in this book. After an introduction showing the relationship between photography and hunting, he talks about researching the target animal and the importance of safety. There is a discussion of field gear including self-defense (!), bags, cooking and the like, and then specialty gear like clothing, scent, blinds and calls and decoys. He urges the photographer to practice before the big shoot, and discusses scouting the shooting location. Classen considers the two techniques of stalking and waiting for animals. Next are a few thoughts on the actual shoot, and its follow-up, both on site and at home, where, curiously given his avoidance of photographic technique, he discusses editing the images.Unfortunately, the book seems aimed at photographers who are going to be introduced into an extremely wild habitat where survival will be an important element. Places like the more well-traveled national parks are not disdained, but looked on only as places to practice wildlife photography. On top of that, most of the recommendations are generic. For example, the author tells us to research a target animal on the web, but offers no specific hints of places to look, or even the type of Google searches that help. For approaching animals, other than the suggestion that one use heel-toe walking to avoid sounding human, there is little advice other than to be prepared to walk or crawl into position. It would have been useful for the author to provide some specific examples of how he deals with particular animals. As to animal images they are all of the mega-fauna that hang out in Classen's area of Alaska and are rather pedestrian. I'm not certain that the author's advice would even be useful in say, Uganda. Some of the images are laughable, like a photograph of a person reading a book to support the point that the reader should research his target species. I certainly didn't need two small images of helicopters accompanying the text that tells me that rescue in the wilderness may be difficult.Even though I've photographed plenty of wildlife, I hoped to learn a few tips that went beyond common sense and what I could figure out on my own. I didn't.

He covers the research and planning for such shoots. He gives lists of the necessary equipment not just for taking the picture itself but also what you need to survive in the wilderness. He goes very in depth with these items and the other necessary skills of tracking, camouflage, and calling which enable the amazing wildlife images in the book. He also stresses keeping safe and legal in all activities. He also states right from the start you should already have the photography knowledge behind you. This is not a book about f-stops and shutter speeds but it is a great read for those wanting to take their wildlife skills to the next level.I received this book in order to review.

From reviews of the hardcover edition:

“More Curious begins by making you wonder what kind of book it is, exactly, and ends by reminding you that categories are nonsense when you’re enjoying something this much.”—Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of A Visit from the Goon Squad

“Mr. Wilsey can write in a range of emotional octaves, moving from the comic to the philosophical to the streetwise with ease, while putting body language on his prose to give the reader an almost synesthetic sense of what he’s saying.”—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

“More Curious captures the dizzying absurdity of contemporary America.”—Vanity Fair

“Sean Wilsey’s witty essays from his cross-country adventures form a portrait of the weird side of contemporary America.”—Los Angeles Times

“When Wilsey is at his best, and he often is in More Curious, his prose has a barely contained energy that makes his work both informative and entertaining. And often, whether his subject is rats or NASA or skateboarding or soccer, that work is provocative and huge-hearted.”—Alex Lemon, Dallas Morning News

“Sometimes he’s funny and self-deprecating and sometimes he’s somber; sometimes his scope is as sweeping as our country, and other times it’s as narrow as Buzz Aldrin’s taste in wristwatches. There’s one through-line from beginning to end, though: those careful, thoughtful, perfect sentences.”—Alison Hallett, Portland Mercury

“Generation-defining . . . a welcome chronicle of our age.”—David Kurlander, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Now in paperback, with a bonus essay not included in the hardcover edition, here is Sean Wilsey’s celebrated collection of essays on the glory and misery, the beauty and absurdity of contemporary America.

It's kind of like Seinfeld....a book about nothing...but it is about slices of the author's life which are funny, informative and make a good read. I wish there were more books like this.Wilsey takes us from Marfa, Texas...about as far as one can get from civilization and still be in the lower forty-eight....to a trip across the south in a truck that can do no more than forty-five. Along the way there's a chapter about buying a dishwasher online....I just bought one so this story was great fun. There's another tale about the World Cup, where he bemoans America's lack of interest in the game, which is curiously a little out of sync after so many Americans were enraptured about soccer recently. There are many more chapters, each with its own flair. "More Curious" is a potpourri of interest with no particular theme or direction....they stand by themselves. But the author's heartwarming tales make it a wonderful read. I highly recommend it!

At 29 my husband and I decided we'd had enough of it and left. Maine was our adventure, and here we have stayed. Reading this book reminded me of what I miss about Texas--the sky, the horizon, the adolescent "life ahead of you " memories. Wilsey captures the uniqueness of Marfa as it was and as it is. And art. And artists. Crazy. Now I will read Infinite Jest and Oh the Glory of it All.

I learned some new information from this book, but there was so much tidbits of information that it was a very slow read. I would have liked to have seen the traditional "curious" information edited out.
