Northeast Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley was truly a dark and bloody ground, the site of murders, massacres, and pitched battles. The valley's turbulent history was the product of a bitter contest over property and power known as the Wyoming controversy. This dispute, which raged between the mid-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, intersected with conflicts between whites and native peoples over land, a jurisdictional contest between Pennsylvania and Connecticut, violent contention over property among settlers and land speculators, and the social tumult of the American Revolution. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a fascinating read By Gail Strevy Bought this book hoping it would shed some light on the lives of Susquehanna Company settlers in northern Pennsylvania. It delivered that and more. If you have ancestors who lived in Bradford County Pennsylvania before 1800, this book is a must-read. If you just like reading history books, this one covers an American war most people have never even heard of.

Levy Paul Moyer tells the prolonged and complex story of the Connecticut colonization of Pennsylvania and its attendant violence. The research is quite good and the narrative clear, if academic. Moyer brings many of the characters in this bloody series of incidents to life and this book will highlight one of the major wars within the American Revolution. Readers will be shocked at the amount of blood letting between Yankees and Pennsylvanians.Moyer wants to strip the "wild Yankees" of their special character as New Englanders, arguing that their surge for independence was nearly identical to North Carolina regulators and other frontiersmen. But this point of view denudes the Yankees of their own culture including schools and powerful and engaging towns-- unusual features on the Pennsylvania frontier-- and the Yankees continuing ties to their Connecticut homelands.Still, a first rate piece of work.

A Fascinating Look at Revolutionary Spirit in Early America's Frontier By RDD In "Wild Yankees: The Struggle for Independence Along Pennsylvania's Revolutionary Frontier", Paul Moyer examines conflict between Connecticut and Pennsylvanian settlers in the backcountry of Pennsylvania. Moyer argues "the violent struggle over property that beset America's hinterlands, rather than representing the byproduct of the 'real' Revolution made by the Founding Fathers, was the Revolution for large numbers of ordinary folk. The farmer's revolution was not the result of ideas that trickled down from above, but of aspirations and experiences that bubbled up from below" (p. 10). Farmers in the backcountry viewed the acquisition and possession of land as independence made manifest and viciously fought those they believed were a threat to their property claims. Further, "the revolutionary frontiers' struggle for independence was also closely bound to male settlers' efforts to attain and protect a masculine ideal" in which their ownership of land and status as head-of-household represented the most localized form of independence (p. 63). In the end, the settlers' development of the land led to the creation of towns and societies bound by the market to the country around them, putting an end to their desire for a break with Pennsylvania.Moyer's research relies heavily on letters, court records, and other testimony from the region with occasional segues to provide backgound about concepts or developments in the larger social fabric of revolutionary New England. His greatest contribution is to show that these incidents of frontier violence were not exceptions to the revolutionary spirit of the fledgling nation, but rather expressions of those ideas on the individual level.

From the Author In 2013, I took photos of Wally Rothwell ... pictures that I incorporated into our community newsletter called Javalina.Line along with a short story about his thirty years living here and specifically in celebration of his 90th birthday. This lead to my questions about what he had done in his life, and we chatted about some mutual activities in Vietnam. I gave him my book, Just Dust - An Improbable Marine's Vietnam Story, to read. Every time we met at the mailbox, we'd exchange questions. These chats got deeper and deeper, and his reminiscing more captivating and poignant. Paragraphs turned into chapters, and in the course of a year, into the book titled Inconspicuous - Walter Rothwell's Undercover Journey During the Cold War.

About the Author Wes Choc grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, living there until 1965 when he joined the Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. Since the end of his military service in 1969, he worked for the American Automobile Association for over forty years. In 1992 he was appointed president and CEO of AAA MountainWest, overseeing business and club operations in Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. After retiring from AAA in 2008, he and his wife, Carol, moved to Arizona. Wes has become an active community volunteer. With his TEFL certificate in hand, he spent three months teaching English as a second language in Ecuador. Back at home, Wes tutors English regularly for new US residents. He also mentors homeless and troubled youth. Wes has worked with veterans in Montana and Arizona, especially with vets returning from overseas with PTSD or other disabilities. He is currently an active volunteer at the Tucson Veterans' Hospital helping recovering vets. Wes enjoys writing and has recently established his own publishing platform aptly named Chosen Journey Media. With his initial success of   "Just Dust - An Improbable Marine's Story", Wes went back to work and is delighted to have completed "Inconspicuous" as a life story told to him by a friend who also served the United States proudly in uniform. Carol and Wes Choc make their home in Tucson, Arizona. With his first work in the 'books', Wes Choc sought new work after publishing Just Dust. An individual raised during WWII in Europe and starting his trade at the beginning of the Cold War. This account is about an agent in the shadows but yet with a private family. From West Germany in the late 1940's to Vietnam in the early 1960's, an account of learning the trade of an Intelligence officer and retiring to America to live out his life. Uniquely different!Sadly one of the last of his generation.

A simple guide on DSLR photography By Matt Smith I am planning to buy a DSLR camera anytime soon but my worry is that I have no idea how to use it as I find it too complicated compared to a smartphone. Thanks to this book, I learned the basic functions of the different parts of this tool and how I can use them to adjust how the image would like. I really love the lessons inside especially Chapter 5 wherein the author gave some tricks on how you can best capture your object. Upon learning these things, I became more interested to get one so I can try it out myself. I can't wait to start capturing life events and nature using this awesome tool and implementing the things I learned from this informational read.

But now I'm sure my pictures will be better day by day!Sometimes you read a guide and you feel like you're the most stupid in this world. Here you read with fun and you feel author wanted to teach you, not only show that he is a professional (he definitely is). Also, for those who didn't buy camera yet: author shows some differences between most popular brands in the way you use it, could be really helpful to make decisions.Happy shooting everyone!

For a man who grew up to become the “Bull Moose”, Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child, suffering from asthma and other maladies. But his physical weakness actually drove him to be more active, which also fostered an interest in nature. It also helped that Teddy’s family was wealthy, allowing him privileges including home school and the ability to attend Harvard, where he was an athlete and took an interest in naval affairs. After finishing at Harvard, Teddy entered politics, but it didn’t stop him from writing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, establishing himself as a professional writer and historian.  In the 1890s, it was Teddy’s turn to make history, leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War and being decorated for his service with a Medal of Honor. He parlayed his glory into the governorship of New York and then the Vice Presidency under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Teddy was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency.   By the time Roosevelt died in 1919, he was an American icon. Today, Teddy is remembered for being an explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combine into one unique reputation.

However, the outpouring of Gardner's vast knowledgeoften detracts from the biographic intent (if there is one). The reader who does not share Gardner's impressiveunderstanding of Blake will find this work at times difficult to follow or fully appreciate.For decades I have had an intrinsic and indescribable attraction to Blake's work. I had hoped to obtain somedefinitive factual insight into relevant details of his life. I did learn something more from Gardner's work butnot as much as I had hoped to. After the reading I have a broader general image of Blake's life that is weak onspecifics.

SCHELL FAMILY – PIONEERS OF MISSOURI - Descendants and Ancestors of Henry Schell and Elizabeth (Yocum) Schell. Henry Schell (1810-1863) and Elizabeth Yocum (1819-1900), were born in early Missouri Territory, married in 1835 and started a trading post at the base of a small hill or “knob” along the White River. The town of Shell Knob, Missouri grew from this early settlement and was named after them. About 1845 they moved further west, and built a mill and trading post along Big Sugar Creek in what is now McDonald County, Missouri. Henry and Elizabeth had twelve children that lived to adulthood. Their many descendants have spread across the United States and include many surnames. This family history helps the reader look beyond the names and dates and imagine their ancestors and their life experiences as they really were. This well-researched and documented family history traces the DESCENDANTS of Henry Schell and Elizabeth Yocum Schell, as well as providing the ANCESTORS of the Schell and Yocum families. The book is over 500 pages and includes more than 3,500 individuals. A name index assists with locating an individual or surname. Extensive source documents, such as probate, census, land records and patents, military records, church and family records, birth, marriage, death and obituary records, support this family history. A photo appendix includes many early day photos. The author, Gayle Foster, is a descendant of Henry Schell and Elizabeth (Yocum) Schell. As a child, she was fascinated by the family stories told by older family members. She recalls visiting the grave of Henry Schell at the old Schell home place in McDonald County, hearing the story of Henry Schell’s murder during the Civil War by bushwhackers, and being fascinated by the legend of the Yocum Silver Dollars. These early experiences sparked her life-long interest in family and local history.

A Comprehensive and Enlightening Family History By Jeff Billington Though I'm more laterally related to than descended from the Schell family, I found this comprehensive history of the family extremely informative and a great treat for my interests in both genealogy and history. Packed with facts and data, it is not a light read, but it does provide a wealth of information on the various members of the family over the last couple of centuries, while also delving into the incredibly interesting legends and folklore left behind by the family's pioneering past. I found the stories of family patriarch Henry Schell's murder by bushwhackers during the Civil War and the gold pieces and money he hid before he died, which was likely only ever partially recovered, the most interesting. The ample selection of pictures it contains is also a treat, providing faces to names I had only heard and providing a glimpse of what the early settlements of Southwest Missouri looked like.

About the Author Patrick Flanagan is the creator and editor of "JESUS CHRIST & THE VIRGIN MARY IN ART: A VISUAL PRAYER BOOK & ART ANTHOLOGY as well as the Publisher and President of Giclée Creative Publishing. To prepare this book, he spent over a year researching 350 important religious artists and studying more 3,600 of their best religious paintings from the 1200's to the early 1900's to select the best artists, their best oil paintings while compiling a diverse collection of the various paintings styles, distinctive interpretations of Jesus Christ and The Virgin Mary to complete this book. In the end, the book features 36 artists and 280 of their incredible oil paintings. Although born in Bangor, Maine in 1954, he grew in Enfield, CT, where he started his creative career as a teenager by writing for several area newspapers for years. His professional career began after he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film/Television from the University of Bridgeport. He has over 30 years experience in publishing, television, art, creative development & marketing. His experience as a mixed-medium water-soluble artist helped him in developing this book. He now lives in Littleton, NH and has a son, Sean Patrick Flanagan and two grandchildren: Benjamin and Elizabeth of Enfield, CT. By M. wheat “JESUS CHRIST & THE VIRGIN MARY IN ART: A VISUAL PRAYER BOOK & ART ANTHOLOGY” is a magnificent & devout Christian book that I truly love. I love art –especially religious art because it by-passes the secular world altogether. The outstanding, well selected oil painting for “JESUS CHRIST & THE VIRGIN MARY: A VISUAL PRAYER BOOK & ANTHOLOGY brings a humility, joy and genuine Truth that actually brings me to tears. As a visual thinker, everything from the selection of oils included, to the vibrancy of colour, to artistic attention to detail elicit the same response as do prayers in the Grace of the Spirit. As one who is visually inclined I see this magnificent anthology the same way I see prayers for which no words are adequate. Yet, “JESUS CHRIST & THE VIRGIN MARY IN ART: A VISUAL PRAYER BOOK & ART ANTHOLOGY” is rich in its Spirituality and devotion to God-Man, Jesus and His Blessed Virgin Mother in textual reading that accompanies the oil paintings. The book is a true “Visual Prayer Book”, reaching into every mind, heart and soul a sanctified anthological exploration of both the word and the visual realms—accessing at once, both right and left sides of the brain. Few things in this world hit both sides of every person to a place where oils transcend the palate and the Spirit gives words that escape the conscious and transcend into the realm of prayer. This is probably why it brings me to humble, joyful tears. I love this book because it brings the Spirit of the Will of the Father, the Sacrifice of Jesus the Son of our precious Virgin Mother of God to a full satisfaction that fills the soul, mind and heart of the reader.Understandably, religious art is varied depending on culture and the unfathomable reach of the Holy Spirit to all who seek God. However, this is the finest book of verbal and visual prayer. I have never seen a compendium of priceless art that infiltrates even the smallest part of our being. When I say ‘the finest’, I include the art in asking Sunday School children to draw me a picture of God. Invariably, every picture had markings of the child him/herself—glasses, red hair, short or longer hair, eyes joyful and grateful that God looked so much like them. This is a transcendent book everyone owes him/herself to own specifically this book—because when it fully assimilates into each person, all people will subjectively appear in a form that mirrors something commensurate with the totality of “JESUS CHRIST & THE VIRGIN MARY IN ART: A VISUAL PRAYER BOOK & ART ANTHOLOGY”.God does not give physical eyes to see. He is the Holy Spirit Who gives vision to Spiritually See. Artists have tried through the centuries to give images of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His ever fidelitious Mother Mary, who on the Word of an Angel agreed to bear the Christ of all times, regardless of her own consequences. The oil paintings in this book must be seen to familiarize the person with the myriad concepts of artistic rendition. The more often one looks at the book a picture becomes a study and then an automatic prayer praising God for His Will. Then each portrait will have a common denominator of the Holy Spirit’s Gift of Eyes to See. Only then can we see through the holy Eyes of the Spirit the intention God put on the hearts of the artists.There is no doubt that the Christ and His Mother had a life of good and of struggle. Our beloved Ste. Joseph is inherent in all the portraits, should you look for his chastity, strength of manhood, ability to support his Wife and Child----and most of all, the miracle of his non-speech until he named the Child Jesus. It was the custom of the time—still popular today to name the first son after the father. The fascination of God’s Power from the Holy Spirit inception of Jesus into Mary’s womb continues through out Mary’s gestation time. God showed great power in the Third Person of the Trinity to make the incarnation of Jesus as the true Will of God.Throughout this book, I see all oil paintings as One, Holy and Christ-bound picture. I see the Blessed Virgin Mother of Christ over and over as one single image. I have prayed for what to write here, and God responded to my way of simplicity. When you look at the portraits, center on the eyes of each portrait and see how they all are as ONE in the SPIRIT of Sacred Vision. When you are able to do this, praise God immediately for the transition of what we see in the material world, versus what the Eyes of the Holy Spirit open to us. You will be enormously gratified when all of God’s Works you are able to see as One.I congratulate the editors selections of oil paintings, and the the prayer associated with the singular portrayal of God made man and His Mother as both Divine in Jesus, and human in Jesus and Mary. If this writing does nothing more than inspire the portraits, not only to be admired, but to be studied and a generous source of prayer. It is a comprehensive collection of over 280 oil paintings of Jesus Christ & The Virgin Mary from 1200 A.D. to the early 1900's A.D. by 36 of the most important Master Religious Artists including El Greco, Rembrandt, Duccio, Peter Paul Rueben and many lesser known artists such as Franz von Stuck. The full color images of each painting is stunning and vivid and it is printed on 70lb bright white glossy paper to further enhance the color.This book includes 280 beautiful oil paintings of Jesus Christ & The Virgin Mary, 36 original artist biographies, 250 original Daily Inspirational Devotions & 250 Bible Verses under each painting as well an in-depth glossary of artistic, cultural & historic terms. This truly is a powerful "VISUAL PRAYER BOOK" and if you focus strongly on each devout oil painting and pray, you will be able to feel connected to Jesus Christ or The Virgin Mary. The book's theme is "FOCUS ON JESUS & YOU WILL REACH HIM" and I believe it works. Here you can find biographies of 36 different artists - from Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli and other great artists.It is also a great spiritual book that has very beautiful religious pictures from all over the world! Under each picture you can also find a prayer that complements the picture. I think this book makes perfect gift!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful read...IF the formating and typos weren't so horrible By E. Fogle This book has an amazing wealth of information. With so many details, the reader gets an in-depth look at how life was run during the Norse era. Having said that, the information is worthy of 5 stars, but the formating knocks it down. The formatting on the Kindle is absolutely awful. The footnotes are mixed in with the body of the text and don't line up with their reference points, making it extremely difficult to match up the information. There are also multiple typos - even several cases where numbers are mixed in smack dab in the middle of words. For formatting alone, I would give it a 2 stars. The only thing making me give it a 3, is the fact that I am extremely pleased with the information I'm able to get out of it. Someone really needs to fix the multitude of aggravating errors!
