Today the word “commando” conjures a picture of daring special forces raids, but originally it was the Boer word for a mobile column of fighting men. This is the account of one such fighting man. Aged just seventeen Deneys Reitz, son of the ex-President of the Orange Free State and then State Secretary of the South African Republic, took up his rifle and joined the Boer Army. It was 1899, and tensions between Great Britain and the Transvaal Republic and Orange Free State had reached boiling point. From their initial strikes into Natal to the surge of British troops and the transition to bloody guerrilla warfare, through luck and family ties Reitz was present at most of the major events. Not published until 1929, ‘Commando’ remains one of the most unique and important pieces of literature about the conflict. J. C. Smuts summed it up best in his preface: “Wars pass, but the human soul endures; the interest is not so much in the war as in the human experience behind it. This book tells the simple straightforward story of what the Boer War meant to one participant in it.” Deneys Reitz (1882-1944) was a Boer solider, lawyer, author and politician. In the aftermath of the Second Boer War, he went into exile alongside his father and brothers, spending time in Madagascar before returning to South Africa and studying law. When WWI swept across the globe he fought alongside the British against the Germans, first in Africa and then on the Western Front, rising to command a battalion. It autobiographically tells the story of his part in the Boer War. He started as the sixteen year old son of a prominent Boer politician and ended with him joining Jan Smutts on his raid on Port Elizabeth. This is a story of guerrilla warfare based on minimal resources, for instance they used to visit the abandoned camp sites of British Columns just to pick up ammunition that the Tommies had dropped. They then used this to attack the very soldiers who had dropped it.However, at the end of the Boer War Reitz was unable to accept British rule and went into exile and this is where the second volume, Trekking On starts. After a disastrous effort at hauling freight by ox cart in Madagascar which nearly cost him is life, Reitz is persuaded by Smutts to return to South Africa where he regains his health and enters local politics. At the outbreak of W.W.II Reitz joins the South African Army and takes part in the putting down of the Maritz rebellion and the campaigns in East Africa. Once the Germans are defeated in Africa he travels to England and , having decided firmly which side he would prefer to be on, joins the British Army as a private. Following a chance meeting with Smutts in London he experiences a dizzying rise in rank and ends the war, after seeing much action as the Colonel of a famous Scottish regiment. The final book in the trilogy, No Outspan, covers Reitz's life in South African politics between the wars and concludes with him as Deputy Prime Minister of South Africa sitting on an advisory panel to Winston Churchill. in London. During this time he is visited by an Englishman who returned to him the Mauser rifle he took from him when Reitz became his prisoner during the Boer War. The last time I heard this rifle is still in the possession of Reitz's son and is regularly shot by him.The Trilogy has been published by Wolfe Publishing as a one volume set in recent years and if you see a copy for sale, grab it!

Vivid personal recounting of first major war of 20th Century By Ian Muldoon Written by a teenager, albeit, a resourceful, fit, intelligent son of a farmer and distinguished South African, it recounts in considerable detail the honourable soldiering on horseback and mule of young Deneys Reitz. His many encounters with the enemy; the harsh weather, difficult landscape, starvation and disease on a guerilla operation that lasted over two years, is testament in part to luck, but also to his survival skills, marksmanship, courage and tenacity. A great read which should be read with some advantage in conjunction with The Boer War by Thomas Pakenham.

A fascinating account of the 1900 Boer War in South Africa By machoy@iafrica.com Deneys Reitz joined the Boer forces fighting against the English in the 1900 / 02 Boer War in South Africa. While still in his late teens he fought in the famous battles of Spionkop and Nooitgedacht and took part in the seige of Kimberley. His book is an account of the mobile "commando" war and is compelling for its humanity and the historical perspective it gives of a war in which the civilian dead matched those who died in action and a war in which guerrilla tactics were used for the first time.

A companion volume to Rougemont's "The Individualists in Church and State," this outline of Christian political action was written by the nineteenth century pioneer of the genre, the Dutchman Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer. Groen not only developed a political philosophy based solidly in Reformation truths but he also formed a political party to bring those truths to bear in the political forum of his day. Then, as now, the battle was against the Revolution: "the invasion of the human mind by the doctrine of the absolute sovereignty of man, thus making him the source and centre of all truth, by substituting human reason and human will for divine revelation and divine law." It is "the history of the irreligious philosophy of the past century; it is, in its origin and outworking, the doctrine that—given free rein—destroys church and state, society and family, produces disorder without ever establishing liberty or restoring moral order, and, in religion, inevitably leads its conscientious followers into atheism and despair." Against the Revolution there is only one antidote: the Gospel. To proclaim and elaborate this truth was Groen van Prinsterer's life work. This volume—never before published in English—is an adept summary of it.

The translation is eloquent and dignified, as befits the 1860 original.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If Groen van Prinsterer wrote it, it will be good. By Ben House This political classic, only recently translated into English from the Dutch, is not very well known to American readers. Yet, I think that both the author and the book are quite important. While lots of Christians have gotten involved in politics, very few have gotten into Christian political philsoophy. I read this book near the end of 2015 and am currently reading it again. It is published by Wordbridge Publishing, which is under the direction of Ruben Alvarado and is the publishing house for some outstanding works on political philosophy and Christian thought.Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer , commonly just referred to as Groen, ranks as one of the greatest Christian political thinkers and activists of all time. His realm of action was in the Netherlands during the 1800s where he was a court historian who turned his scholarly labors to dealing with political issues of his time. He rightly determined that the philosophy stemming from the French Revolution was a poison that would destroy Christian culture and the political order of Christendom.Groen, along with others, started a political party. He and his political allies worked to create one of the most vital ingredients for a Christian society, Christian schools. His labors involved writing and assembling the Christian history of the Netherlands and the contributions of Christian thought and action from the time of the Protestant Reformation. Specifically, he labored for the freedom and opportunity to start Christian schools. It turned out to be an 80 year battle for the heart and soul of the Netherlands. As with many Christian works, the first fruits are short lived, but the labors have long-term effects. We are still tapping into the resources of Groen’s thought. His name is overshadowed by that of his colleague and successor Abraham Kuyper. Kuyper’s brilliance and many accomplishments are not to be minimized, but without Groen, there would have been no Kuyper as we know him.Groen’s main work was titled Lectures on Unbelief and Revolution. It consisted of talks he gave to a group of interested friends on the impact of the French Revolution and how that movement was at heart unbelief. That work, which was his earlier work, and Christian Political Action in an Age of Revolution were originally in Dutch. Outside of some Reformed theological circles and Neo-Calvinist philosophical circles, few people look into the writings of Dutch theologians and philosophers. It is amazing how the little country of the Netherlands produced a whole array of brilliant Christian thinkers during the 1800s and early 1900s. The names include Groen van Prinsterer, Abraham Kuyper, Herman Bavinck, Herman Dooyeweerd, H. Van Reissen, G. C. Berkouwer, Klaus Schilder, and many more. We can add the names also of those who crossed the pond from the Netherlands to North America. Louis Berkof, Gerhard Vos, and Cornelius Van Til are among the esteemed names we give here.Basically, our current political struggles are a re-fighting of the issues of unbelief. I don’t want to simplify and over-simplify current politics so as to boil this down to two charts with one being the good guys (belief) and the other being bad guys (unbelief). We are not talking about current candidates, the two-party system, or the 2016 election cycle. Unbelief is a deeper problem than Bernie’s Socialism, Hillary’s emails, Donald’s tweets, or Ted’s abrasive personality. The problem is not located in the candidates, but in the heart and soul of the country. We expect flawed sinners to bring us “hope and change.” We expect walls to keep out problems and bombs to make the world safe.We need to get back to some deeper issues. Some of the answers–or at least the right questions–can be found in such works as Plato’s Republic, The Federalist Papers, and Mill’s On Liberty. As we get serious about rebuilding a political and social culture, we have to mine the gold found in those Dutch writers like Groen van Prinsterer and in this fine book Christian Political Action in an Age of Revolution.

The Federalist Papers, by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay

Amazon.com Review "This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren ... should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties." So wrote John Jay, one of the revolutionary authors of The Federalist Papers, arguing that if the United States was truly to be a single nation, its leaders would have to agree on universally binding rules of governance--in short, a constitution. In a brilliant set of essays, Jay and his colleagues Alexander Hamilton and James Madison explored in minute detail the implications of establishing a kind of rule that would engage as many citizens as possible and that would include a system of checks and balances. Their arguments proved successful in the end, and The Federalist Papers stand as key documents in the founding of the United States.

About the Author Review The Federalist Papers are a series of 85 articles advocating the ratification of the United States Constitution. Seventy-seven of the essays were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788. A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist; or, The New Constitution, was published in two volumes in 1788 by J. and A. McLean. The series' correct title is The Federalist; the title The Federalist Papers did not emerge until the twentieth century. The Federalist remains a primary source for interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. According to historian Richard B. Morris, they are an "incomparable exposition of the Constitution, a classic in political science unsurpassed in both breadth and depth by the product of any later American writer." At the time of publication, the authorship of the articles was a closely-guarded secret, though astute observers guessed that Hamilton, Madison, and Jay were the likely authors. Following Hamilton's death in 1804, a list that he drew up became public; it claimed fully two-thirds of the essays for Hamilton, including some that seemed more likely the work of Madison (Nos. 49-58, 62, and 63). The scholarly detective work of Douglass Adair in 1944 postulated the following assignments of authorship, confirmed in 1964 by a computer analysis of the text: - Alexander Hamilton (51 articles: nos. 1, 6-9, 11-13, 15-17, 21-36, 59-61, and 65-85) - James Madison (29 articles: nos. 10, 14, 37-58 and 62-63) - John Jay (5 articles: 2-5 and 64). - Nos. 18-20 were the result of a collaboration between Madison and Hamilton.

Egolf The new edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS edited by Clinton Rossiter and co. is probably the best paperback edition. Rossiter and Charles Kesler did a good job in presenting these papers, and their explanations and notes make this book clear for readers. THE FEDERALIST PAPERS alone are an important source of serious political thinking. In an age of almost unbridled political power, corruption, empire buidling, etc. THE FEDERALIST PAPERS are important reminder of what a Free Republic (not an empire) should be.THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were written by Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), John Jay (1745-1829), and James Madison (1751-1835). Due to concerns about the New York State legislators ratifying the The U.S. Constitution, these papers were journal pieces written to New York journals and newspapers to convince both the residents and state legislators to ratify The U.S. Constitution. One should note there were other published articles supporting ratification of The U.S. Constitution and other articles can be read in a text titled FRIENDS OF THE CONSTITUTION.What is alarming about THE FEDERALISTS PAPERS is that they were written for most readers. If one were to write such articles these days, most Americans would not read them nor comprehend them. This is a sad commentary on Americans regarding serious political writing regarding their birthright. If THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were assigned to high school kids, whoever would make such an assignment would be fired or worse.THE FEDERALIST PAPERS give important explanations of the separation of powers, limits of each branch of the central government (The Federal Government), and how political power should be used within severe limitations. These articles were a brilliant attempt to mitigate fears that The U.S. Constitution would give far too much power to the the central or federal government. The late Clinton Rossiter had a useful suggestion for those who did not want to read all 85 of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. He suggested that the best numbers were 1,2,6,9,10, 14, 15, 16,23, 37, 39,47, 49, 51, 62, 70, 78, 84, and 85. Those readers who read these numbered papers would probably want to read the remainder. This newer paperback edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS has some valuable features to help the reader navigate complex political thinking. The U.S. Constitution is placed in the end of the book with page numbers of the book whereby the authors of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS refer to that section of the U.S. Constitution. This gives clarity as to exactly what the authors were arguing regarding specific sections of the proposed U.S. Constitution. Another important feature of this edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS consists of the notes. The men who wrote THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were learned men who had seriously studied history and political thought. The notes explain the examples of Ancient Greek and Roman History used to make some of the arguments. These notes also refer to examples of Renaissance and English History which were also used to make good arguments from historical examples. One could get first rate learning experience of Ancient Greek and Roman History as well as a better view of European Renaissance and English History.Readers should not forget that the authors of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were responding to the Anti-Federalists and their articles titled THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS. Too often the Anti-Federalists are referred to as obstrcutionists and narrow minded men. This is simply not true. The ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS were as well written and brilliantly argued as THE FEDERALIST PAPERS.One should note that one of the major objections of the Anti-Federalists to ratification of The U.S. Constitution was that it did not contain a Bill of Rights. The Federalists took this argument seriously. Basically, one could argue that without the Anti-Federalists, there would have been no Bill of Rights. Ergo, without The Bill of Rights, there would have been no U.S. Constitution. The Anti-Federalists were very important in the ratification of The U.S. Constitution.Anyone who wants to define who Americans should be should read THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. They should also read THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS and read clear, informed, and well written political theory from men who could actually think. Most political hacks and too many American citizens are not even vaguely aware of this important political writing. Yet, this political writing is the very best American political thinking in U.S. History. This reviewer highly recommends the Rossiter-Kesler edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS and other editions of THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS.

They actually managed to improve on it. The great new additions include the Declaration, the Articles, and an excellent new introduction by Charles Kessler. I think the killer feature for new readers will be the notes in the back, which, if you (like me) are shaky in your Greek history (and the finer points of European), do a great job of explaining allusions and references by the Papers. Be sure to use this feature -- there's no indication in the text that a note exists, but you should just look if you're unsure of a historical setting (or something similar), and there probably will be one.On the minus side, I do miss Rossiter's introduction. It wasn't as good for laying out the plan of the work, but it should have been included (along with Kessler's) for its excellent overview of the contemporary situation and the philosophy behind the papers. Also, I feel that Rossiter's contents were slightly better than Kessler's. And, the page numbers are changed, invalidating older references to them. But all in all it's an improvement, and certainly the Mentor edition is the only one to have. Period. It's the one used by at least some of the Supreme Court Justices, and it retains that single dominating feature, Rossiter's cross-referenced Constitution (and index of ideas). As for the Papers themselves, of course, they need no review. They are the first and ultimate Constitutional commentary, and fascinating reading besides. As literature they stand out for the exceptional style (all the more remarkable considering the haste in which they were written) and clear thinking, and more than any other book they define how the U.S. _should_ work. All in all, this is one of the best book bargains on the market, that rare coincidence where best edition meets mass-market paperback. What are you waiting for?-Stephen

It includes many extras, but especially useful is the text of the US Constitution with cross-references to specific pages of the Federalist Papers referring to that provision. I highly recommend the Federalist Papers generally, and more specifically this edition to anyone wishing to know more about the founding and ratification of the Constitution.

Therefore, This book literally starts with an introduction on how to prep your files for editing, and how to choose which workspace in Photoshop works the best for you.Moving beyond that, I go through a comprehensive list of all the tools in Photoshop and some of their suggested functions. In this list, I have starred the tools that I find most useful, although of course there’re several ways that any one task can be done, so I have included alternatives, and it is up to you to find out which one works the best for you. Moving on, the importance of layers and of nondestructive editing is stressed. You will learn how to stack your layers effectively in order to get the most out of your images. Also mentioned are adjustment layers, which are much more easily accessed then trying to utilize the menu bars all of the time. Next is a chapter on blend modes, and how they can make your layers meld together more effortlessly. In the following installation that pairs with this one, you will learn more specific tips and tricks that will come along with exercises to guide you. Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn...

  • Proper image preparation, including setting the correct color space, dimensions, and resolution

Very helpful By Amazon Customer Review for both books.Even if you're familiar with PS CC, a refresher course never hurts. For beginners, it might have been helpful if there would have been screenshots to clarify a few things. The book is well written, covers the basics, and points to some hidden gems that I knew, but forgot about it.There's one issue about editing RAW files. The author mentions "saving" the DNG raw file.DNG files are usually converted from the proprietary extension of the camera, either during import (if you use Lightroom) or the Adobe conversion utility.Once a photo has been processed, the DNG remains untouched, and you will be given the option of saving as PSD, TIF or JPG (and a few more). For a beginner, this might be a little confusing.

During the Cold War, both Chinese and American officials employed a wide range of migration policies and practices to pursue legitimacy, security, and prestige. They focused on allowing or restricting immigration, assigning refugee status, facilitating student exchanges, and enforcing deportations. The Diplomacy of Migration focuses on the role these practices played in the relationship between the United States and the Republic of China both before and after the move to Taiwan. Meredith Oyen identifies three patterns of migration diplomacy: migration legislation as a tool to achieve foreign policy goals, migrants as subjects of diplomacy and propaganda, and migration controls that shaped the Chinese American community.

Using sources from diplomatic and governmental archives in the United States, the Republic of China on Taiwan, the People's Republic of China, and the United Kingdom, Oyen applies a truly transnational perspective. The Diplomacy of Migration combines important innovations in the field of diplomatic history with new international trends in migration history to show that even though migration issues were often considered "low stakes" or "low risk" by foreign policy professionals concerned with Cold War politics and the nuclear age, they were neither "no risk" nor unimportant to larger goals. Instead, migration diplomacy became a means of facilitating other foreign policy priorities, even when doing so came at great cost for migrants themselves.

The Diplomacy of Migration: Transnational Lives and the Making of U.S.-Chinese Relations in the Cold War (The United States in the World), by Meredith Oyen

Review

"Oyen makes a brilliant effort to bridge diplomatic history and Chinese migration history by bringing into sharp focus the diplomacy of migration and its impact on the triangular relationship between the United States, Nationalist China, and Communist China."―Mao Lin, H-Net Reviews (April 2016)

"In The Diplomacy of Migration, Meredith Oyen takes an in-depth look at the issue of citizenship for Chinese Americans, particularly around questions of national belonging and dual citizenship, as well as the changing domestic politics of migrant communities in the United States and Southeast Asia. Oyen's book is extremely well researched; particularly impressive is her deep investigation of Chinese archives in both the PRC and ROC and her extensive use of Chinese-language primary and secondary sources throughout the work."―Mary Lui, Yale University

"Meredith Oyen's The Diplomacy of Migration is a 'must-read' for scholars of migration and U.S.-Sino relations. Impeccably researched and compellingly written, the book demonstrates how migration, foreign policy, and domestic politics were interwoven into the relationship between the United States, China, and Taiwan. In telling this story, Oyen urges us to reconsider what we know about the evolution of the United States’ relationship with China."―Carl Bon Tempo, University at Albany, author of Americans at the Gate: The United States and Refugees during the Cold War

"This is a compelling, well-crafted book that significantly widens and deepens our understanding of U.S.-China relations during the Cold War. Meredith Oyen breaks new ground by revealing how the use of migration policy for diplomatic goals was woven into the very fabric of the alliance between Nationalist China and the United States from the early 1940s through the early 1970s. Wide-ranging, meticulously researched and based on archives from several continents, The Diplomacy of Migration skillfully dissects the multiple ways in which both countries used policies ranging from the wartime repeal of exclusion, immigrant selection criteria, deportation and repatriation, and the politics of refugee resettlement to send positive or negative signals to one another, bolster their international prestige and support, and even remake the community of Chinese Americans in ways that both governments sought."―Glen Peterson, University of British Columbia, author of Overseas Chinese in the People's Republic of China

About the Author

Meredith Oyen is Assistant Professor of History at University of Maryland Baltimore County.

The information is well organized.I bought all three Marine Division Unit Rosters ebooks that this author has published, and find them very useful for my research.Practical note: I had to use font size 1 when viewing on my phone using the Kindle app or the information was truncated, but, given that the data is in a table, this is acceptable. The table headers are only on the first page of each table, but, from what I understand, this is a limitation of the Kindle.

Although this book doesn't have a section for medals or WIA like The Spearhead By Doogie I have The Spearhead for the 5th Marine Division, but I wasn't able to find a similar resource for the 3rd or 4th Marines. Although this book doesn't have a section for medals or WIA like The Spearhead, it has the names, ranks and units which is what I needed.

The Gnostic Religion, by Hans Jonas

Review "Using the few sources available to him with penetrating insight, Jonas reconstructed the Gnostic worldview ... The Gnostic Religion remains, even today, the classic introduction" – Elaine Pagels, author of The Origin of Satan"A fascinating exposition with copious quotations, of what is known of Gnosticism ... Dr. Jonas writes with authority, passion, and precision about this long-forgotten religion" – The New Yorker

About the Author Hans Jonas(1903-1993) was the Alvin Johnson Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research from 1955 to 1976. He was born and educated in Germany where he studied underEdmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Rudolf Bultmann. He left Germany in 1933 and lived in Palestine and England before coming to North America. He influenced ethical philosophy--especially bioethics--and the study of gnosticism.

I would agree with this assessment, in some ways. I found Jonas' book to be well organised and less "wordy" than that which Rudolph wrote. While Jonas does not cover as wide a range of types of Gnosticism, he does enter into greater detail. He uses Valentinian and Manichaean Gnosticism as examples of different streams of Gnostic thought. The detail into which he goes with the different elements of these schools is excellent, and is quite easily understood. He also covers the imagery and symbolism of Gnostic religion, as well as some on Marcion, Simon Magus and other topics. One drawback is the book's age, and it is a little dated. Here, Rudolph's book offers a more recent analysis with more of the Nag Hammadi Codices easily available than in Jonas' time. Despite this, Jonas still presents an excellent overview, and his book is rightly considered a classic in the field.Overall, the book is worth the money and worth the effort to read. It provides a sound basis and introduction to Gnosticism that is not too loaded with incomprehensible words and rubbish. If you know little to nothing about Gnosticism, start with Hans Jonas.

45 of 48 people found the following review helpful. "A Classic Treatment of the Gnostic Religion" By Johannes Platonicus As an introduction to this insightful work, Hans Jonas opens with one of the most illuminating overviews of the condition of the Greco-Roman and the Orient from times of Alexander the Great to the early centuries of the Christian Era. Then, moving into the Gnostic texts, Jonas discusses the meaning of "gnosis", as the ancient man understood it, along with other terms pervasive throughout Gnostic literature. At last, in part one, Jonas describes the extent of the Gnostic movement, and ultimately sets the stage for his in-depth analysis of the various schools and Gnostic systems of thought in part two, namely those of Simon Magus, Marcion, Valentinian, Hermes Trismegistus, and the infamous Manes. In part three, Jonas deals with the Gnostic cosmology and morality, with some of the new discoveries in the field, and finally, in the epilogue, he closes with a dissertation on Gnosticism, Existentialism, and Nihilism. Hans Jonas' work, overall is an excellent, comprehensive study of the multifaceted belief systems of the Mediterranean World. While his treatment may exhaust even the most concentrated of readers, it nevertheless will furnish such a wealth of knowledge that it will act as a superb reference tool and will be a valuable source for religious, cultural, or philosophical studies.

41 of 45 people found the following review helpful. one of the best in gnosticism By O. B. Makhubela As a Gnostic, it was a delight to read this book. Everything I knew and did not know, I found in detail in this book by Jonas. You will find the background on the history of Gnosticism in Alexandria; history on its development; the various contributors (e.g. Babylon, Syria, Greek), the various "systems of thought" (eg Valentinian) and their proponents; and a bit of philosophy on Metaphysics. The excerpts and quotations from ancient Gnostic sources like the Mandaeans tracts and Manichaean books are very helpful and exciting. It is well structured and very easy to follow!A disadvantage is that it tends to overlook the influence of ancient Egyptian mythology of the after-death (regarding the journey of the soul after death), which influeced Gnosticism profoundly! Also it does not mention the Cathars and Catharism. But this should detract nothing from the book, it is a classic and a masterpiece on Gnosticism!

“An altogether path-breaking collection of riveting essays.”—Robert A. Hill, Editor in Chief of The Marcus Garvey & UNIA Papers

“A fascinating, original, and much-needed history of the development of Black Power on the various islands of the Caribbean. By moving the center of the analysis away from the United States, this collection raises important new questions about the rise and impact of Black Power.”—Stephen Tuck, author of We Ain’t What We Ought to Be

“The little-understood role of the Afro-Caribbean Left in the English-speaking islands receives a powerful dose of insight here.”—Paul Buhle, author of C.L.R. James: The Artist as Revolutionary

“A scintillating addition to Black Power’s vibrant historiography. While its geographic focus is relatively small, its implications for our understanding of black radical politics could not be broader. It proves beyond a doubt that Black Power was a truly transnational phenomenon.”—Joe Street, author of The Culture War in the Civil Rights Movement

“Most case studies of the Black Power phenomenon which swept through the Caribbean islands in the seventies focus mainly on one or two Caribbean islands.  The value and importance of Kate Quinn’s book is that it marshals studies drawn from as far south as Trinidad and Tobago to others as far North as Jamaica and Bermuda. It also has the advantage of looking at cultures and languages other than English. The book is a must-read.”—Selwyn Ryan, author of Eric Williams, The Myth and the Man

Black Power studies have been dominated by the North American story, but after decades of scholarly neglect, the growth of “New Black Power Studies” has revitalized the field. Central to the current agenda are a critique of the narrow domestic lens through which U.S. Black Power has been viewed and a call for greater attention to international and transnational dimensions of the movement. Black Power in the Caribbean highlights the unique origins and causes of Black Power mobilization in the Caribbean and its relationship to Black Power in the United States, ultimately situating the historical roots and modern legacies of the movement in a wider, international context.

2015 Reprint of 1900 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. From about 1870 onwards, Massey became increasingly interested in Egyptology and the similarities that exist between ancient Egyptian mythology and the Gospel stories. He studied the extensive Egyptian records housed in the Assyrian and Egyptology section of the British Museum in London where he worked closely with the curator, Dr. Samuel Birch, and other leading Egyptologists of his day, even learning hieroglyphics at the time the Temple of Horus at Edfu was first being excavated. In "The Meddling Duke", His Grace, the Duke of Danby is up to his holiday matchmaking meddling with his two unwed granddaughters! ***These two novellas are previously published Danby novellas. Winning a Lady's Heart was previously published in "A Summons From The Castle". Winning a Lady's Heart For Lady Alexandra, being the source of a cold, calculated wager is bad enough...but when it is waged by Nathaniel Michael Winters, 5th Earl of Pembroke, the man she's in love with, it results in a broken heart, the scandal of the season, and a summons from her grandfather--the Duke of Danby. To escape Society's gossip, she hurries to her meeting with the duke, determined to put memories of the earl far behind. Except the duke has other plans for Alexandra...plans which include the 5th Earl of Pembroke! A Season of Hope Five years ago when her love, Marcus Wheatley, failed to return from fighting Napoleon’s forces, Lady Olivia Foster buried her heart. Unable to betray Marcus’s memory, Olivia has gone out of her way to run off prospective suitors. At three and twenty she considers herself firmly on the shelf. Her father, however, disagrees and accepts an offer for Olivia’s hand in marriage. Yet it’s Christmas, when anything can happen… Olivia receives a well-timed summons from her grandfather, the Duke of Danby, and eagerly embraces the reprieve from her betrothal. Only, when Olivia arrives at Danby Castle, she realizes the Christmas season is a time of hope, second chances, and even miracles.

The premise is based on an autocratic and seemingly omniscient duke who summons his numerous grandchildren to his castle at Christmastide so he can play matchmaker. These two short stories are about Lady Alexandra and Lady Olivia who are sisters.Winning a Lady's Heart - 4 starsLady Alexandra is heartbroken when she discovers Lord Pembroke has wagered against them getting married. She creates an embarrassing scandal and is relieved to be summoned to her grandfather's castle in Yorkshire to escape the London gossip. Very likable characters and I could feel their hearts breaking over their split. The story lost momentum for me during their reconciliation - it felt flat and rushed. They have a brief conversation and all is forgiven. I was just expecting something different, especially after all the emotional lead up to this point. But it's still a good story, it's well written and I was happy to root for these lovely characters getting their HEA.A Season of Hope - 5 starsCaldwell always does an excellent job of pulling me into her stories and turning on the emotions to make my eyes well up with tears. This story includes an injured soldier with a beauty and the beast / second chance theme, but I never tire of this storyline and it's particularly well written. Lady Olivia has waited five years for the man she loves to return from war, but her father is insisting it's time she move on and marry his 60 year old friend. She's relieved to receive a summons to her grandfather's castle to spend Christmastide with him. Will the Duke of Danby play matchmaker again? There was nothing I disliked about this story and thoroughly enjoyed it.** Sweet and clean romances.

By Teatime and Books Reviews Book 1 Winning a Lady’s Heart:We are first met by Alexandra and Nathan in the parlor of Alexandra’s home. Alexandra is deeply in love with Nathan but alas he no longer returns those feelings. He leaves her, breaking her heart and utterly devastating her. She soon learns of a wager he’s made at Whites that tarnishes her reputation but what tarnishes it further is when she confronts him some weeks later at a high society ball. She’s wrought with hurt and is dragged out by her shocked, yet comforting mother. The Christmas season is near but Alexandra’s heart feels as cold as the fallen snow and colder still when she is summoned to her grandfathers, the Duke of Danby’s castle for Christmas. After her family’s long travels, Alexandra wants nothing more than to disappear under the covers of her warm bed when she is called to see the duke immediately. Fearing his rage and disappointment about her recent scandal, she shakenly but courageously goes to his office. However, to her surprise he talks of love and her true feelings for Nathan are expressed. Her grandfather calls in another of his guests and Alexandra turns to see before her, Nathan and her heart stops. Why did the Duke of Danby invite Nathan and his granddaughter? Will Nathan and Alexandra rekindle their love? Or will their love fall like the Christmas snow?Book 2 A Season of Hope:We meet Olivia curled up in the window seat of her room watching the falling snow. She’s reflecting on her age of three and twenty and that another season has passed and to her father’s disappointment, she’s not married. Her mother comes to her room and she and Olivia discuss her father’s desire for her to wed. Olivia does not want to wed for her heart belongs to another, Marcus Wheatley who went off to war five years before and has been presumed dead. She and Marcus loved each other very deeply and she made a promise to him and has pushed off all other suitors that is until now. Her father has offered her hand to a Lord Wellesley. However, to Olivia’s surprise and relief, she’s been summoned by her grandfather, the Duke of Danby’s castle for Christmastide. She and only she has been summoned. The Duke of Danby is in his office and is talking with his employee, a dark haired man with a patch over his eye and scars marking his face. He is informed by the duke that they are expecting a very special guest, his granddaughter, Olivia. A carriage draws up and Olivia enters the castle only to be whisked immediately to her grandfather’s office. There she not only meets the duke but also hiding in the shadows is none other than her long lost love, Marcus Wheatley. What game is the duke playing now? Will Olivia and Marcus rekindle their love like the fire in the great hall or will Olivia be forced to marry Lord Wellesley and live with only her memories?Christi Caldwell’s writing is impeccable, she takes the reader on an enchanting ride back in time to the age of Lord’s and Lady’s and of course one rascally Duke. What more romantic than at the most magical time of the year, Christmas, where love reawakens and sparkles just as the candles upon the yew tree. Caldwell’s characterization and plot development are so rich and one can’t help but fall in love with the young lovers in both stories. These stories are sweet, deeply romantic and so very enchanting. You will want to be sure to add this to your Christmas list this season and read these again and again each Christmastide!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love, LOVE, LOVE!!! By Amazon Customer The characters in these two darling tales will first show you heart break, then the triumph of love, all the while celebrating the season. All Christi Caldwell stories have similarities. The differences are what make the stories, and the characters make the differences. These characters grow fast, fill out fully, and finally, find their futures in the glorious background of the Christmas season in Regency England.

I learned new hand positions to use while drawing as well as toning and shading my drawing. There’s also a step by step procedures on how to do portrait drawing, drawing from memory and dealing with drawing mistakes. It was fun to try the suggestions given as well I think. This is something I can share with my son who also likes to draw.

He's been showing an interest in drawing and we would really like to encourage him with it. Personally though I am not a creative person so I thought it would be a great idea for the both of us to bond over drawing. Eva's book has been a big help in even making my personal drawings bearable.

It reads like a book of instructions on how to put together something from Ikea. The handful of basic illustrations look like they are taken from Pixar's website. Nuff said. PS Five star reviews? Uggghhh. PPS I am a professional cartoonist living in Australia. My advice is to save your money (I downloaded this book while it was free) and spend it on a pen and some paper and just draw. PPPS Any down votes of my review will have come via one FB group or another. Ignore them. This book really does s#ck the big one.
