Soon, the two develop deeper feelings for each other that aren’t covered in their agreement. The biker stops pretending to turn over a new leaf and starts becoming a better person for Trisha. However, the Black Hound's dangerous past not only threatens their new business but also Trisha's life. Old enemies target new loved ones. The two have lost so many family members over the years but Dante will be damned if anyone tries to add one more. Can Dante protect her from the violence of the past? Can a charade become true love? I was disappointed that not all the nations that have been in the Rugby World Cup were mentioned, let alone had photos of their games. There was good background information as to how the RWC came to be, and that was very informative.

The first comprehensive examination of the nineteenth-century Ku Klux Klan since the 1970s, Ku-Klux pinpoints the group's rise with startling acuity. Historians have traced the origins of the Klan to Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866, but the details behind the group's emergence have long remained shadowy. By parsing the earliest descriptions of the Klan, Elaine Frantz Parsons reveals that it was only as reports of the Tennessee Klan's mysterious and menacing activities began circulating in northern newspapers that whites enthusiastically formed their own Klan groups throughout the South. The spread of the Klan was thus intimately connected with the politics and mass media of the North.Shedding new light on the ideas that motivated the Klan, Parsons explores Klansmen's appropriation of images and language from northern urban forms such as minstrelsy, burlesque, and business culture. While the Klan sought to retain the prewar racial order, the figure of the Ku-Klux became a joint creation of northern popular cultural entrepreneurs and southern whites seeking, perversely and violently, to modernize the South. Innovative and packed with fresh insight, Parsons' book offers the definitive account of the rise of the Ku Klux Klan during Reconstruction.

Review Extraordinarily well-researched. . . .interesting and illuminating.--Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Review Exciting, impeccably researched, and much-needed, Parsons' book goes far beyond providing a social or political history of the organization, and examines the Klan as a complex, cultural phenomenon that carried social and political force through the cultural meanings that it conveyed and that were imposed upon it.--Amy Wood, Illinois State UniversityThis is the first book to really apply cultural history to the questions that historians of Reconstruction have been asking for a long time. This is a great, groundbreaking work that will clearly be a major milestone in the study of Reconstruction and the history of the Klan.--Bruce Baker, Newcastle University

About the Author Elaine Frantz Parsons is associate professor of history at Duquesne University.

A new danger lurks in the storm... All I wanted was the perfect quiet Christmas in our new home with my growing family. A huge tree, cookies, carols, you know… some basic frickin’ Yuletide cheer. Of course, because we’re Liz and Bryan “The Blizzard” Marsh, nothing can go to plan. First, we agree to take in Bryan’s cousin Dani for the winter. In the cult of moody teenagers, she is their Queen. I’d hoped we could connect, but to say we haven’t gotten along would be the understatement of the century. Then there’s the Market Price Pyro, a local arsonist who is torching buildings all over town. Cops can’t stop him and no one knows what to do. I don’t care what Bryan says. Even though we haven’t been directly targeted, I know we’re linked in some way. And to top it all off, Mother Nature has veered the storm of the century right to our front door. With a three-day blizzard barreling down on Tellure Hollow, we’re forced to evacuate everyone in town to the Powder Mountain lodge. As the resort caretakers, Bryan and I try to make Christmas as comfortable as we can. Once we settle into the lodge to wait out the storm, strange things start to happen. It’s only when we’re completely snowed in I start to wonder… Maybe by trying to keep everyone safe from the storm, we’ve put them at even greater danger. Trapped with the Blizzard is a standalone romantic thriller that takes place after Devoted to the Blizzard. The books in the Tellure Hollow series can be read individually, but are best read in order. This book is a great combination of contemporary and new adult romance featuring two main couples of different age ranges. The story also takes place during Christmas, so it's perfect for the holidays AND to capture the holiday feel any time of year! This novel contains adult language, sexual situations, and violence. It's intended for adults.

By kazza248 Once again you didn't disappoint, when i thought your story of Liz and Bryan couldn't get any better you smashed it with this one, loved the story, the suspense, the mystery then finally putting it all together, love the new characters Dani and Miah looking forward to their book, if you are going to read this i recommend you read the prequel first. A christmas story with a difference, well done Adele, you had me captured from the start yet again xx

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I absolutely love this book By Michele Lee I absolutely love this book! I am never disappointed in anything that Adele writes. I love how she is able to draw you into the story and make you feel like you are sitting in the room with her characters.. I am not one to give spoilers. But I love following Liz and Bryan and also I can't wait to see the continuation of Dani and the rest the gang we got introduced to:) Happy reading!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For a first-timer, I enjoyed Adele's TRAPPED. By Mignon Mykel I am going to go against the grain and state that this book should be read after reading the previous book(s). I didn't feel that it could properly be called a standalone. Well, for the most part, it is. Liz and Bryan's relationship does not need the previous books in order to make this book work. But there were a number of items that were talked about or referred to in the first chapter alone that left me a bit confused -- had I read the recommended, but "not necessary", prequel TROUBLED, I likely would have been fine.It appears that this series is primarily told in Liz and Bryan's viewpoints (I'm taking a stab in the dark on Bryan); this particular book is told in Liz and Dani's -- Dani having the say in the prequel. It's not often that I read a book told in the first person by two female characters, let alone two characters that aren't vying for the affections of the other person telling the story. That aside...This was an enjoyable read. I didn't much care for Liz's distaste for Dani, though. While I very much understood her disgruntlement where Dani and her lack of 'get up and go' were concerned, I definitely felt that she disliked Bryan's cousin more than necessary, and that she was just putting up with her, giving her opportunities, because she was 'family' (that said, Dani and her pissy self in the beginning made me want to read her prequel, simply because I like reading about troubled teens and watching them bloom). My dislike of Liz vs. Dani was at the beginning only, though. It was great to watch their relationship grow, from barely tolerating to a deep sort-of friendship/family-ship. It takes a some bumps and bruises, some fires and mystery, to do it, but Dani proves that she is more than just Bryan's annoying teen cousin who they were forced to take in for the winter holiday. Speaking of Bryan, Bryan and Liz were super cute together. I will have to find the time to read their story completely. We also meet Miah, who I believe was a great person for Dani to connect with. I think he was pivotal in her changing.Besides my little problems stated above, Adele Huxley has proven to me that she can write. I found her characters to be well-developed and her writing style was easy to follow, with just enough flair to keep everything exciting.

Medieval Scottish Romance Meet three generations of Highland Brides and the Warriors whose hearts they captured. To Bewitch a Highlander, Book 1 She will protect her identity with her very life if necessary. Who will protect her from herself? Shoney's lightning speed with a bow captures Ronan by surprise, and their chance meeting ends with him lying unconscious at the bottom of a ravine. When he awakens, he cannot rid his mind of her startling beauty, her valor, or the secret fear he glimpsed in her steel eyes. He vows to find her, but as the mysteries of her identity unfold, his courage and heart are tested as never before. Highland Thunder, Book 2 A STORM IS COMING... Although she faces tragic loss, Brenna will never succumb to grief or fear, nor will she surrender to the one man she despises--the very man who now has the power to control her destiny. Like the storms that rage unchecked over the moors, her fury is about to be unleashed. A HIDDEN LOVE... He does not look at her or speak to her, and most importantly, he does not touch her. These are the rules Duncan set for himself long ago to ensure his affection for his best friend's wife remained undetected. But under the weight of a land besieged by war, the walls he erected to shield his heart crumble. If he can earn her trust, the one woman he has always loved may at last be his. But first he must save what he cherishes most from a nightmare of dark secrets. To Love a Warrior, Book 3 Destinies unfold. Secrets are revealed. The Isle of Mull will be forever changed. Half Highlander, half Viking, Garik MacKinnon was not born on the Scottish Isle of Mull, but fostered there in his youth. Now, he leaves behind his home, once more bound for Mull, to join the MacKinnon warriors as they answer Robert the Bruce’s call to arms. He is ready for battle, eager to fight for Scotland’s freedom. What he is not prepared for is his encounter with Nellore, a shield maiden from Mull, whose allure defies all reason. Nellore has the strength and skill of a warrior but the heart of a woman. When the men are called away to war Nellore must aid those left behind to safeguard their village against attacks from the MacLeans—a feuding clan to the south. She understands her duty to her clan. She is ready to take up arms against the enemy if need be. What she is not ready for is the ache that fills her heart when war pulls Garik from her side. Desire ignites and battles are waged as both Nellore and Garik learn what it means to love a warrior.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Excellent box set suggestion 6 stars! By Nicole Laverdure Book #1 Fantastic and captivating 6 stars!OMG, what a fantastic and captivating story! I finished reading To Bewitch a Highlander, written by a new-to-me author Lily Baldwin! It's has been a long time, since I have read an excellent Scottish romance like this one. I am totally surprise! I really loved it very much! I will mention that this book is mostly the love story of her two main characters! I fell in love with her heroine Shoney who was a healer and a Pict; you will have to read this story to understand who the Picts were. Ronan, a great warrior, was the heir to the leadership of the MacKinnon clan. Together, they will pull you slowly into their lives and discover that their story was closer to reality with some historical details to create an ambiance. Their loves scenes are passionate and very well written, always with a touch of tenderness. You have to love Shoney and Ronan, they are so beautiful together and the chemistry between these two is passionate and stormy! Ms. Baldwin added family and friends to create an atmosphere of togetherness, I liked Aidan, Ronan's oldest friend. Ms. Baldwin is a natural storyteller and an excellent writer. I love that she added a touch of witchcraft, I find this element fascinating. I will have to watch her next books; I am certain that she will surprise us with another great story. It was so captivating that I read it until 3am this morning. The sequel of To Bewitch a Highlander will be titled Highland Thunder. We will meet again Shoney and one of their daughters, Anna who has inherit her mother's gift. I'm so excited to discover who will be the heroine and hero in her next story.Book #2 Breathtaking Scottish adventure as I love them!!! 6 starsLily Baldwin has done it again with her second book in the Isle of Mull series. HIGHLAND THUNDER is the sequel of To Bewitch a Highlander which I found so captivating! This is an excellent Scottish adventure, so fascinating, that I read most of it until the early morning hours and resumed early this morning. We meet again, some characters from her previous story, Bridget, Ronan, Anna. In this one, we meet Duncan, a warrior, devastated by the ravage done by the Berwick massacre resulting in the death of his best friend. Upon dying, Duncan promised him, to take care of his wife Brenna and their daughter Nellore. But Duncan holds dark secrets that will create a barrier between him and Brenna. Wanting to shield his emotions, he did everything to displease her. Brenna did not trust him until she realized that she was beginning to feel strong emotions for him. Will they share the same feelings? Will Duncan be able to forget the past and forgive himself? Will Brenna discover his secret? Will the clans finally be united? I fell in love with her two main characters Duncan and Brenna! I also liked her secondary characters that brought a touch of their own stories nicely blended into this fantastic journey. Their love scenes are filled with tenderness and passion. Beautiful stormy chemistry between the two that will keep you captivated until the end. Will I strongly recommend HIGHLAND THUNDER, a breathtaking Scottish historical romance as I love them! Ms. Baldwin is truly a great writer that we should watch closely.Book #3 Beautiful conclusion of the Isle of Mull trilogy! 6 starsWhat an amazing final story, Lily Baldwin wrote and offered to her readers of her trilogy! To Love a Warrior is so captivating and filled with passion, action and intrigues. This one is the story of Garick and Nellore, two beautiful Scottish souls, who knew each other ever since they were young and finally fell in love. Their story is so touching! We meet again Ms. Baldwin's heartwarming characters Bridget, Duncan, Brenna, Ronan, Logan and many more. To Love a Warrior is the story of Nellore, who had been found by Bridget, and raised by Duncan and Brenna, who became a fierce female warrior, with skil that surpassed many men. Garick, a brave Highlander warrior, had been fostered by Ronan and became a supporter to the cause of Robert the Bruce, the new King of Scotland. If you recall, Bridget holds the key to the Witch of Dervaig suspense, and at the end, will divulge her secret!Because this author is a very talented writer, this novel was a delight to read, it's very well written with some touch of humor. I was not disappointed, I truly recommend it, I also suggest that you read her first two books To Bewitch a Highlander then Highland Thunder. It's a marvelous Scottish adventure to get trapped in! Beautiful conclusion!

I do love historical romance novels but the formula has to be just right. So, I thoroughly enjoyed this series, I didn't want it to end. Strong female characters and wonderful male characters just made for a very enjoyable read. I would recommend them to anyone.

By Lisa Davis Thoroughly enjoyable trilogy that is interwoven without being annoyingly repetitive. The characters are strong while still being vulnerable, and the story line had enough of a departure from the usual medieval romance to hold my attention throughout. I appreciate that Baldwin's writing is strong enough that she can depict battles, sensual romance, and fully rounded characters without resorting to excessive blood, guts, and graphic sex.

Very Clever Idea for a Series By Angie Mike I have to admit, this series seems like a very clever concept and will be a great chance to try out some authors that I've never read anything by before. With that being said, this prequel is super short and will take most people no more than 5-10 minutes tops. At an estimated ten pages, there's honestly not much to it and I doubt really necessary to read. More than likely, each story will include the little bit of background this prequel provides. However, since it is free and takes no time at all to read I'd say give it a go. Though I've heard of the majority of the contributing authors, I've only read stories by a couple of them. I just wish these ladies would release the whole 50 book series in a bundle since that I'd definitely buy, as I'm sure would many others =)

Really interesting, though not day-to-day relevant these days By Teh Arbitrageur I love reading wildly-outdated non-fiction, especially if I don't have to pay for it. Just paints a portrait of an industry that's been lost forever (or, at least, changed unrecognizably). Not sure why anyone digitized this, but it's a great bedtime book: if this doesn't take your mind off your troubles and bore you to sleep, nothing will.

An easy to follow read with lots of drama, and lots of romance. I was expecting more badass, tough guy behavior, but I found it impossible not to like them. :)Gabriel Diaz and his team are handling private party security as something to keep them busy and less bored in their down-time while recovering from their latest mission with Centurion Corporation when he's approached by Maylin Cheng. He blows her off until later that night when the team witnesses a car attempt to run her over.Maylin is trying to find someone to help her find her missing sister. Gabe and his team take her back to their compound with them to try to get some answers. Military-Veterans-turned-mercenaries, they have a lot of resources at their fingertips with which to help search for details. They decide to look into her missing sister to see if they can figure out what happened to her, and what the connection is to who just tried to hurt Maylin. Will they be able to help? And when Maylin and Gabe start to have feelings for each other, will they be able to figure out a way to have any type of future together?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An action-packed, intriguing romance By Shirley Quinones Gabriel is biding his time while he and his team recover from their latest mission. Acting as a bodyguard is not exactly what he signed up for, but keeping busy makes the time go by faster. During one of these events he's approached by a beautiful woman asking him to consider a missing person's case. Sadly, Gabe doesn't like to take these 'emotion-driven' type of cases and firmly refused. In any case, the higher ups in Centurion have the last word on which type of assignment they'll take on so he doesn't give the woman or her missing sister another thought. Until he realizes the woman's life is in danger.Maylin is determined to find her sister and she will go to any lengths to seek help in her search. But when the opportunity arises to seek help from Centurion, she's not expecting for her request for help to be turned down flat by the agent she approached. Maylin's outlook does not seem to be improving either since it appears someone is after her.If nothing else, the hit and run attempt catches the attention of the very man who refused to help her, driving them both to seek answers amidst a tangled web that involves major players and their own personal emotions. What I enjoyed the most about this story was that the author kept me intrigued throughout. It's not often that I find myself clueless as to what the hell is going on. I enjoyed the twist and turns in regards to the missing person's case as well as seeing the romance between Gabe and Maylin develop.Betrayal. Passion. Lies. Heartbreak. Danger. Every single element the author brought to the page flowed seamlessly to bring forth a captivating, riveting read full of 'Awww'-inducing moments with some added heat to make it more than worth my while.I enjoyed watching as the connection between Gabe and Maylin grew and strengthened as the story progressed. Although theirs was a lust at first sight kind of pairing, Piper Drake made sure that their connection made it to the page too. Sure, their chemistry was undeniable but it was those candid moments spent over a meal, the fleeting touches and honest interactions that ultimately had me cheering them on.As a first book in the series, Hidden Impact was a success. Not only did the author provided us with Maylin and Gabe's story, she also introduced various key players and set the stage for other books to come. All in all, an action-packed, intriguing romance.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hidden Impact is a suspenseful read with a lot of action, romance and a great storyline. Also, it will probably make you hungry. By Adelina The best advice I'd give you when you read Hidden Impact: Don't look at Piper J. Drake's Hidden Impact board while reading the book. It'll make you hungry. For two different reasons. *winks*Maylin is strong, determined, hopeful and a great cook! It was refreshing to read a protagonist set on a dangerous world that even though she won't be much of help -which she knows- on the real action like shooting guns, hand-to-hand combat she did differently which are giving information (obviously) and cooking for the team! I don't know half of the things she cooks, but I'm starving. It's a bit hard to make a review with a growling stomach, you know!Gabe is great! While you read throughout the book, you'll understand why he didn't want to take Maylin's request for help in the first place. He knows it won't be easy and he'd made mistakes before. He doesn't want to repeat those so he tries to make it right. The attraction between Maylin and Gabe is strong. As I was reading the book, there was this Gabe and Maylin moment that I stopped reading and flailed. Then, opened my mobile device and continued reading!I admired the Centurion team, specifically Gabe's team, for their unity and cooperation. They are like family even though they don't know much about each of them except skill sets, abilities, strengths and weaknesses that will be a useful contribution to their missions.Hidden Impact is a suspenseful read with a lot of action, romance and a great storyline. Also, it will probably make you hungry.

We Are a College at War weaves together the individual World War II experiences of students and faculty at the all-female Rockford College (now Rockford University) in Rockford, Illinois, to draw a broader picture of the role American women and college students played during this defining period in U.S. history.  It uses the Rockford community’s letters, speeches, newspaper stories, and personal recollections to demonstrate how American women during the Second World War claimed the right to be everywhere—in factories and other traditionally male workplaces, and even on the front lines—and links their efforts to the rise of feminism and the fight for women’s rights in the 1960s and 1970s.

We Are a College at War: Women Working for Victory in World War II, by Mary Weaks-Baxter, Christine Bruun, Catherine Forslund

Review

“This book provides welcome insight into an overlooked aspect of World War II—its connection to higher education. Focusing on Rockford College, the alma mater of Jane Addams, and providing a national context, the authors provide a fascinating story of how the war changed this women’s college, and how college students, staff, and faculty contributed to the war effort in diverse ways.” —Susan Hartmann, author of The Home Front and Beyond: American Women in the 1940s   “Mary Weaks-Baxter, Christine Bruun, and Catherine Forslund bring to center stage the half of the Greatest Generation that usually gets short shrift in the history books, and show how these women—heroic and patriotic in their own right—stepped up in a time of war. They also clearly demonstrate how, whether consciously or not, these women carried on the legacy of early twentieth-century suffragists, and sowed the seeds that flowered into the feminist movement in the 1970s.”—Emily Yellin, author of Our Mothers’ War: American Women at Home and at the Front during World War II   “We Are a College at War succeeds in uncovering many ways that Rockford women responded to the calls of their college, and their country, to support the war. Documenting the range of their responses, this book enriches historians’ understanding of the war era and provides a useful case study.—The Councilor: The Journal of the Illinois Council for the Social Studies

"In We Are a College at War, authors Mary Weaks-Baxter, Christine Bruun, and Catherine Forslun recount the activist experiences of female students at Rockford College during and after World War II. Based on alumni letters and other archival material, the authors build a story of women's lives at one midwestern women's college. Chapter 1 begins with students' concerns about the war. Although some students questioned compulsory conscription—such as Elane Summers Hemith, who rode to Washington, D.C., to protest—most became involved in more traditional war efforts, such as knitting, sending packages to soldiers, donating to blood banks, and buying war bonds and stamps. Through these activities, the authors contend, women students practiced an "ethic of caring" (page 5), one built on the social feminist ideals of alumna Jane Addams. Indeed, Rockford College president Mary Ashby Cheek evoked the exemplary activism of Addams in her talks to students, encouraging them to contribute to democracy through their studies, extracurricular activities, and their activism. Specifically; students listened to speakers, who included presidents of women's colleges and political leaders. They joined chapters of national organizations, including the American Student Union and the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, which wrote a letter to Adolph Hitler in 1941 asking that he end the war. This interesting monograph provides a close look at female students' lives at one specific college during the war period. There are occasional references to students' experiences at other women's colleges, such as Wellesley and Mount Holyoke. Yet I wanted to know whether Rockford College students' experiences were so very different from those at other women's colleges, and if so, how? If anything, sometimes the authors draw too heavily on the relationship between Jane Addams and Rockford College. While Addams's words and examples of activism are evoked by Cheek and the students, the influence of Addams often seems overdrawn. For example, the authors argue that the dialogue and debates "followed the long tradition of Jane Addams" (page 24). But certainly they also arose out of the international curriculum and the desire to better understand the war itself. The authors also claim that Cheek thought of the liberal-arts curriculum as a way to rebuild the postwar society, a perspective that was consistent with "Addams's view" (page 39). Perhaps so, but more importantly the curriculum was similar to that at other women's colleges and even drew from earlier Rockford College presidents, such as Julia Gulliver. Last, Cheek used the salient ideas of progressive educators, such as developing the potential of' each individual student. Progressive practices included small classes for intellectual and personality growth, as well as for the promotion of democracy. If anyone, it was Cheek who was the incredible role model for the students. The archives at Rockford College are replete with records about her and might have been consulted more fully by the authors. For example, Check was active in professional organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa, the American Association of University Women, and the National Association of Deans of Women, as well as the community organizations such as the League of Women's Voters and the Rockford Woman's Club. Regardless of these suggestions the book is delightfully readable and written in a style that makes it accessible to many. The suggested readings also provide interested readers with valuable historical sources. Undoubtedly the book speaks to the strong activist traditions of Rockford College, nurtured by its strong female presidents, faculty, and the memory of Jane Addams." --Anne Meis Knupfer, Purdue University (Anne Meis Knupfer Journal of Illinois History 2010-06-01)

By nlindsay Often the first idea to enters one's mind when thinking about the role of women during World War II is that of "Rosie the Riveter" working in the factory here at home while the men were off fighting. However, a recent book written by three Rockford College professors shows that the contributions of women both at home and abroad were much more complex. As a history major at Rockford College ('08), I was privileged to work as one of the research assistants on this book, We Are A College At War, that was years in the making. Drawing on the first-hand experiences of faculty and students at Rockford College, which at the time admitted only women, this book explores how the war affected this small, Midwestern College and the various ways in which the women of Rockford College chose to respond. The college's archives held a treasure trove of primary sources such as journals, scrapbooks, photographs, drawings, letters, and college newspapers, bulletins, and handbooks. Many of the primary sources used for the book are now available online at [...].These sources show that while many women responded to the war in traditional ways such as working in a factory, sending care packages to soldiers, buying war bonds or stamps, and donating blood, many also responded by joining the war effort on the front lines with the military and Red Cross. Yet, some also chose to participate in protests. In many cases, this was the first time that these women had taken part in any type of political activity and many of them would carry this activism into the women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s.In addition, the book explores how these women drew on the legacy of caring as demonstrated by perhaps the college's most famous alumna, Jane Addams, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. The book also discusses how the women's war efforts affected their personal lives in terms of their relationships with servicemen and marriage. Another consequence of the war was the presence of refugees on campus as both students and teachers. Rockford residents will recognize the references to Camp Grant and Rockford College's original location on the east side of the Rock River, just south of downtown. As we all know, we are losing those individuals with precious and important stories about World War II each and every day. This book is a testament to the female contributions to this time in American history and to the women of Rockford College- past, present, and future.

During the Greek-Italian conflict of World War II, Dr. Theodore Electris, newly married and idealistic, was called up to the Greek-Italian front in the remote mountains of Albania. Homesick, hungry and desperately missing his young wife, Chrysoula, he kept an intimate journal to preserve his experiences for her.Translated by his daughter, Helen Electrie Lindsay, Electris’s entries and letters come together in Written on the Knee. Fully illustrated and accompanied by supporting reference material, the collection serves as both an authentic historical document of Greek involvement in WWII and a story of love, separation and family ties threatened and strengthened by war.Often overlooked in the scope of WWII, Greece’s six-month conflict with Mussolini’s forces played a pivotal role in the war’s outcome. The small country’s fierce resistance against the Italians delayed Hitler’s move into the Soviet Union, which many historians believe turned the war in favor of the Allies. From Dr. Electris’s first entry to his last, Written on the Knee captures the true story of love and war during a crucial time in modern history.

There are also sections giving a brief history of the time before, during, and after the diary to put the diary in context. It's an interesting, personal look at what WWII was like on Greek-Italian front. Since it's a diary, he often writes a lot about some aspects (like the travel, finding food, finding ways to send letters, interpersonal relations, air raids) and less on others (actual patients and wounds treated and the fighting going on). After the diary section of the book, the editor has included information about the overall war movements on this front which helped put the doctor's experiences in context. I understand why it was put afterward--so the reader could share in the not knowing the big picture that the doctor experienced--but some readers might find it more useful to read it first. The nice black and white photos show the doctor at the various camps and villages and help show the people and places that he describes in his diary. One of the included maps shows the doctor's travels with the dates he wrote about entering the town or area so the reader can track his movement. There are other maps showing the lines of war and such, but there was so much information on the black-and-white maps that I had a hard time figuring out where the doctor was and how the map related to what he was describing. People used to these types of maps will probably find them useful, though.I'd recommend this book to WWII history buffs and to those of Greek descent who are interested in that nation's history. This review is also posted at Different Time, Different Place book reviews.

Reviewed by Cynthia Murphy for Breeni Books By Breeni Books Whenever I read about a major event in history, I wonder what the regular people involved thought about it. For example, there are plenty of documents explaining what Roosevelt, Churchill, and even Hitler thought about World War II. But what about all the ordinary people who found themselves in the middle of a war unlike anything they had seen before? Those ordinary people were simply swept up into the tide of history. For the most part, their stories are ignored or relegated to sidebar status. Fortunately, individual accounts are growing in popularity. Written on the Knee provides one man's perspective from the Greek-Italian front of World War II.Written on the Knee is the World War II diary of Dr. Theodore Electris. The diary opens with the mobilization of Dr. Electris's unit. He was drafted soon after his marriage to his beloved Chrysoula. Dr. Electris's diary covers his time at the front as well as his journey home. Most of the diary is devoted to his daily activities. Dr. Electris always had numerous patients. Unfortunately, the medical staff was quite small, and the number of wounded was large. All of the soldiers struggled with the shortages of food and supplies, as well as the challenge of fighting in unfamiliar terrain. The diary does not focus on the details of particular battles. Instead, it covers the daily life among the troops. Obviously, they were not always involved in battles. Much of their time was spent in transit or in camp. When the unit is in camp, it is easy to forget that they are fighting a war. The men settle into daily routines and form friendships. Dr. Electris does a beautiful job of describing his unit's activities, both on and off the battlefield. The diary is very detailed. It also includes various photographs that Dr. Electris took along the way. The photos help the reader attach faces to the names mentioned throughout the diary. The addition of the photos is a nice touch since this is such a personal account of the war. It really feels as if the reader is there with Dr. Electris. As a soldier and a physician, Dr. Electris faced an internal conflict. He was a physician first, but he was also a soldier. On some levels, Dr. Electris seems to be a reluctant soldier, yet he wants to protect his country. He fulfills his duty by tending the wounded. One thing that I found very interesting was the number of civilians he also treated. As word spread throughout the villages the unit occupied, civilians also asked Dr. Electris for help. At times, it sounds as though he was running a civilian practice and fulfilling his military duty. Dr. Electris's love for his country and his profession appear throughout the diary. They are among the driving forces of his life.Dr. Electris's diary ends with his return home during the Nazi occupation of Greece, but that is not the end of Written on the Knee. Dr. Electris's daughter, Helen Electrie Lindsay, includes a wonderful Epilogue and an extremely informative appendix. The epilogue includes details of the family's life during and after the Nazi occupation. There is also an amazing family story regarding how Chrysoula got her house back from the Nazis. The appendix provides valuable information regarding Greece's involvement in World War II. The appendix also contains some great political cartoons from the war.Written on the Knee is a fascinating look at the Greek-Italian front of World War II. It offers one man's perspective of an often overlooked portion of history. This is a must-read for history fans as well those who simply like snapshots from history.

A must have for both historians and nonspecialist general readers looking for other perspectives on WWII By Midwest Book Review World War II was more than America fighting Germany and Japan. "Written on the Knee: A Diary from the Greek-Italian Front in WWII" is a picture of another theater of the war, not often documented. Covering Electris' time in the conflict fully from his drafting to his return to civilian life through selected diary entries, it's a deeply personal way to learn about the conflict between Greece and Italy during the conflict that consumed the world. "Written on the Knee" is a must have for both historians and nonspecialist general readers looking for other perspectives on WWII.

This is a very important part of our musical history. I, myself have not been a 'hip hop' fan.But after seeing STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON I became intrigued. When I came across this book it raised my awareness of a whole world that I knew very little about. This man is the Berry Gordy of the rap music world. Should be studied by anyone involved in or connected to young people who want to be rappers. Should be read by high school and junior high young people. Should be read by mommas and daddies. It's not sugar coated and there is some nasty stuff in this book but life is not easy and it's easier to confront this world in the comfort of one's home or wherever you like to read. And if you want to take on the rap world you'll be ready. 'nuff said.

About 10% of the book is about NWA yet the title referencing NWA makes you think its based more on the beginnings of NWA from someone who was there from day 1. That sounded interesting enough for me to give it a read.At the end of the book he writes that no one except those who are hip-hop enthusiasts even know who he is. Yet, only a hip-hop enthusiast would bother reading this book and the only mentions of NWA are things that are already known and well-documented.

Over the years have heard most of the pre-Ruthless stories and never got tired of hearing them. It's nice he is sharing those same stories with The World and they are now forever memorialized for generations to come. A true page turner for the hip hop enthusiasts.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun Read – Mystery, Adventure, Love and Coming of Age By Alan Arthur Katz Josh Lanyon is one of my favorite authors, and has been for ages. She has created at least two classic series: The Adrien English Mysteries and Holmes and Moriarity (not Sherlock), plus a host of exciting and well-written stand-alone titles.Jefferson Blythe is definitely cut from the same cloth as many of the author’s other protagonists: an innocent, hapless young man, mild-mannered, and not very adept, who somehow manages to figure out the mystery and get the drop on the evildoers.Dumped by his fiancée upon graduation from university, he uses the money he’d saved for his honeymoon to take a two-week tour of Europe. It was his grandfather’s suggestion. It appears that granddad is the only member of the family with any spunk. Jefferson’s parents spend a great deal of time and energy maintaining a façade of wealth and propriety, and expect their son to do the same. They’re simply not very concerned with his own desires or dreams. But grandfather wants Jefferson to take a brief journey onto the “wild side”, a chance to spread his wings and experience the world. And that’s exactly what Jefferson intends to do. The book opens at London’s Heathrow Airport, where Jefferson arrives, and his surreal adventure begins. Some crazy young woman accosts him at baggage claim, disdains his “disguise”, and tries to force him to go with her. He takes off for the underground station, dodging crowds to lose the insane girl who seems to think she knows him, though he’s never been to England (or for that matter, anywhere in Europe) before. He manages to elude the girl and make his way to his aunt’s townhouse. She’s out of town, but was generous enough to offer him her home while he’s in the UK. Unexpectedly, her son, Jefferson’s obnoxious cousin, is about to get busy with a girl and won’t even let him in the door. He leaves him stranded, in the middle of the street. With neither a hotel nor the wildest idea what to do next, he calls the only other person he knows in London, his childhood friend, George.George is several years older than Jefferson, but the two were always close, until they weren’t. In fact, Jefferson’s refused all communication from George for the last four years. The estrangement between the men came about when George admitted he was gay. Probably because Jefferson had had a crush on George for years, he turned his back and ran away, deeply wounding the faithful and protective George to the quick. You see, Jefferson refuses to acknowledge that he’s gay. He’s not only in the closet, he’s in denial, because if he were gay, his parents would not approve and, like so many gay romance heroes, he’s still pretty stuck in the “pleasing the parents” thing. Fortunately, George is kinder to Jefferson than Jefferson’s been to him, and reluctantly gives him directions to his flat, where George will put him up for a day, until he can get into his aunt’s town house or a hotel room.George, however, is not exactly what he purports to be, an editor at a small classics boutique publishing house. His apartment is ultra-modern and appointed expensively. He obviously has a lot more money than an editor of obscure intellectual books should make, and there are no obscure classics on his bookshelvesNonetheless, he comes to Jefferson’s rescue time and time again. That is, each time the crazy girl shows up with a massive goon and tries to kidnap, assault, or attempt to kill him. And the crazy girl has an uncanny ability to track him down. George breaks the goon’s nose, rescues Jefferson from a kidnapping, gets the police off his back, and sends him on to Paris, where a new guy follows him, loiters outside his hotel and then chases him through the streets – until George mysteriously shows up in Paris to render yet more assistance. Not that Jefferson is entirely inept. He was a track star in college, and he can really run. But more important, he’s smart as Hell and has already made serious progress in figuring out where this whole dangerous case of mistaken identity came from and where it’s ultimately headed. At first, it was to get an “egg” back from him – an egg he knows nothing about. But eventually, it’s about killing him to keep him quiet. Also like other Josh Lanyon plots, it’s sort of an intellectual take on “The Perils of Pauline” - but with a gay man, a potential love story and a colorful travelogue underlying this dangerous, and sometimes hilarious, tale of crime and terror. The author uses a most unusual device to plot the journey, “Esquire’s Europe in Style, 1960”. It’s the guidebook his father used on his European Tour, more than 50 years ago. It’s a breezy, thoroughly out-of-date, guidebook to the Europe of 1960, which adds a great deal of levity to Jefferson’s travels and our perceptions of England, Paris and Rome. It’s a charming conceit.Ms. Lanyon also supplies a host of red herrings to misdirect the reader up until the very last moment. And though the final mystery isn’t exactly challenging, it’s huge fun to watch it unwind. One of the great delights of this book is watching Jefferson’s coming of age – his decision to finally cut the apron strings, come out, and do what he wants, not what his parents expect. After all, there will be no George in his future unless he finally becomes his own man. It’s truly moving to watch Ms. Lanyon’s masterful and subtle writing slowly reveal the protagonist becoming more confident and capable, growing through his trials, right before your eyes. Here’s hoping there will be more to follow. We’re all due for a new Josh Lanyon series, with her lovable (though sometimes oblivious) protagonists, their infinitely more worldly lovers (cops, spies, etc.), and her gentle and authentic prose. The characters are nothing less than charming, the challenges daunting - and more than a little dangerous, the plot propelled by tons of action, and a happy ending to make your day.Josh Lanyon is back, in fine form, with more of what made us fall in love with her superb writing in the first place. Don’t miss Jefferson Blythe, Esq.

Up until now he has been in denial of the fact that he has feelings for a man. After ending a long time relationship with his girlfriend, he decides to take an educational stroll across Europe. While on his European vacation, all hell breaks loose in Jeff's life. He befriends strangers, gets kidnapped, outruns a shooting and much more. During this madness, Jefferson comes to some important conclusions about his future.I had fun and enjoyed this book the entire time. I do think it isn't for everyone. If you're looking for erotic, this isn't it. The atmosphere reminded me of a British comedy show with some romance and sex tidbits added to the mix. Generous amounts of mystery and action are also included. I read it all on a Saturday and was left in the best mood. Thank you to the author for making my weekend.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Misses the Mark By Bo I believe I have read all of Josh Lanyon's M/M books and this is the first one I have rated below four stars. It pains me. Why? Because the plot is convoluted and simply not believable, and the two MCs, Jefferson and George, are vacuous--something no other Lanyon character has ever achieved.Jefferson is painfully naïve and just plain stupid about life upon a) graduating from college with a degree in family-dictated architecture when he wants make documentary movies instead; b) using the money for a planned engagement ring that is no longer needed because either he dumped Amy or she dumped him and taking a trip to Europe with the cash; and c) getting caught up in daily adventures that threatens his life at each turn. Who'd want to marry that kind of guy anyway, undecided sexual orientation taken into consideration or not.George is Clark Kent and sometimes Superman, but always uptight about his feelings about his childhood and college best friend Jefferson, but so reticent that he simply bores you to death. There are too many cell phones lost (the last one of which is magically recovered apparently without the author telling us how), too many saved-by-the-maybe spook incidents, and a bit of sex here and there that sometimes works.Ironically, it's the last two paragraphs which may save the day here because, as implied, there could be a sequel. If that happens, there could be a chance that I would get to like these guys.
