A soldier as dashing in appearance as Murat, as brave as Ney, as eagle-eyed as Masséna. At the time this biography was written, over half of Europe’s reigning monarchs numbered among their ancestors the Gascon Sergeant Bernadotte. Jean Bernadotte served as King Louis XVI’s Regiment of Marines. In the ranks of nobility, Bernadotte was the most complex personality of all Napoleon’s marshals. A staunch Jacobin, Bernadotte convinced himself that he should be King of France; though an undoubted hero, he nonetheless narrowly missed some of the famous battles. He was a political intriguer, but he was willing to accept a walk-on part in the major drama of a restless decade. His personal life was equally full of anomalies, not least that strange mutual loyalty which preserved a marriage to Napoleon’s first love, Desirée Clary, through a dozen years of separation. Bernadotte was in France while Napoleon fought in Italy. From there Palmer writes of his struggles with the Consul, Emperor and generalissimo, of the battles of Austerlitz and Wagram, and of Leipzig where, as the elected Crown Prince of Sweden, he fought against his old chief. He then became the King of Sweden under the title Carl XIV Johan. Alan Palmer’s detailed portrait was the first comprehensive English biography in over half a century, and draws from a great deal of contemporary research by French and Swedish biographers.

Praise for Alan Palmer

‘A fine piece of narrative history, a combination of suspense and scholarship which actually makes you wonder will he make it?’ ANTONIA FRASER’S BOOK OF THE YEAR, Sunday Times ‘Alan Palmer has done justice to [the] epic events with a lively, vivid narrative, written with the appropriate style and panache’ LAWRENCE JAMES, The Times ‘A superb account of the 1812 campaign and its aftermath’ Observer  Alan Palmer was Head of the History Department at Highgate School from 1953 to 1969, when he gave up his post to concentrate on historical writing and research. He has written some thirty narrative histories, historical reference books or biographies. In 1980 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Great Book By Cptcarter726 I Rated this book 5 stars because although it is not as comprehensive as the older biography of Bernadotte, it still explains the entirety of his life simply and concisely. Bernadotte's life story is truly a great one. From Private soldier to King, how could you not find it interesting?

In our history of James Vance, within the Hatfield-McCoy feud, we share the cited sources, photographs, documents, and transcriptions, which are important and relevant in exposing the truth, and dispelling the myths regarding the feud in relationship to Jim Vance, and others. Many of these documents have never been written about in previous feud books. The primary goal with our book is to show the reader “the real” James Vance, not the “folklore” James Vance created by yellow journalist, then written about by writers and movie script writers who perpetuate those myths. Here, you read about his life, as it actually happened. For instance, did you know that in 1885-1887, James Vance once employed nearly fifty Tug residents in a timber business. We dispel the written folklore by giving true history!

The author has done research in the actual court records and published factual information instead of personal opinions, embellishment and hearsay about these often misunderstood mountain people. I highly recommend this book. Thank you for publishing "The Feuding Truth."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A welcome new perspective on the Hatfield-MCCoy story By Dave Vance I just received my copy and read it cover to cover. Clearly an amazing amount of research went into this book, and the authors have unearthed a ton of records about Jim Vance that show a very different side of the man who has been so maligned in the popular stories of the Hatfield-McCoy feud. This book is a must for any serious scholar of the feud and also gives more respect to the times and the local area in showing that those involved were much more complex than their typical portrayal as uneducated hicks.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. that I can recommend without any reservations By Tom Finally, a book, other than my own, that I can recommend without any reservations. It is a must-read for all who are interested in the REAL history of Tug Valley. The Vances have condensed hundreds, if not thousands of hours of research in the courthouses and archives into a book that will remain a prime reference for the future. It has the information, from the records, that refutes some of the most egregious lies in the feud yarns. Get this book!

Nearly a century after it's printing (and more than a century after the first printing) the book is highly browsable, a light but meaningful read in one or several pages at a sitting. Poetry that truly stands the test of time. The little old poem that nobody readsBlooms in a crowded space,Like a ground-vine blossom, so low in the weedsThat nobody sees it's face-Unless, perchance, the reader's eyeStares through a yawn, and hurries by,For no one wants, or loves, or heeds,The little old poem that nobody reads. The little old poem that nobody readsWas written - where?- and when?Maybe a hand of goodly deeds Thrilled as it held the pen;Maybe the fountain whence it cameWas a heart brimmed o'er with tears of shame,And maybe it's creed in the worst of creeds-The little old poem that nobody reads. But, little old poem that nobody reads,Holding you here aboveThe wound of a heart that warmly bleedsFor all that knows not love,I well believe if the old World knewAs dear a friend as I find in you,That friend would tell it that all it needsIs the little old poem that nobody reads.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. read it !!! By Bookatfirstsight I read the first book from this series and fell in love with those men, and was waiting to read more about Marcus and let me tell you he did not disappoint. Marcus Marcus Marcus oh how I wish you were real just don't tell my husband:). But anyway back to the review it was an easy read and I honestly read this in one day. There were no grammatical errors nothing of that sort, it actually flowed and you can follow the characters without being confused. Gena who is one of the main characters I loved although at first you think she will one of the damsel in distress but then she surprise you I love the fact that Mallory always gives her women characters a backbone. They may have some strong men around them but they can also hold their own, which you will find in this book. The secondary characters were great and help out with the story. And Marcus well you get to see why he is the way and act. You will see different sides of him which was great. I know I am not saying much about the story and book itself that because I don't want to give out anything you have to read it. The main characters compliment each other and the sex scenes were well written. Truly enjoyed it.Received this arc for an honest review. And trust me that had nothing to do with my views and opinions of the book. You will enjoy it.

There is more going on than anyone realizes and Gena may have great insight. Marcus has a wonderful backstory and Gena is endearing, trying to fight as much as she can while hindered by her human side and lack of knowledge of her supernatural side.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 2nd book in the Bad Boys of the Underworld. You do not need to read the first one to understand this book. It centers around two new characters but does mention characters from the first book this centers around Marcus & Gena. Marcus is an arrogant vampire who has been "banished"from his home to infiltrate the rebels who are trying to kill Aleksander the vampire king. Gena is a human who ends up being killed by a man she works with but she doesn't die. She goes to find the sister of her bf to see if she can help find out why she didn't die. She meets Marcus at the club they go to & they are immediately drawn to one another. Marcus ends up helping Gena find out what she really is. Gens ends up awakening feelings in Marcus he thought were long gone. Will they be able to get past everything & be together & keep each other safe?

Excerpt from The Personal Letters of John Alexander DowieAfter a period of comparative inaction, he awoke over night to find his name known. The press ridiculed and fought him. Incidentally, it told of cures being wrought. The big wooden structure became all too small to hold the crowds of sick and maimed and halt and blind - body-sick and sin-sick souls who gathered from every point of the compass and every stratum of society. Ever one indisputable fact existed: cures were wrought. And the opposition of press, pulpit, medical fraternity, state and civic authorities were but avenues which spread abroad the new propaganda and recruited the ranks of John Alexander Dowie's following. His strong, pungent, denunciatory words and aggressive methods concerning the practice of medicine and surgery aroused the State Board of Health to action, in which they were defeated. The city authorities then instituted action under the Hospital ordinance, causing the arrest of himself and wife on more than one hundred separate charges. He fought this fight, which lasted nearly a year, to a finish, winning success in the upper courts, which declared the ordinance under which the arrests had been made, invalid. From this time his rise to great power, influence and wealth was phenomenal.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Although LEGORRETA Architecture has been often labeled a high modernist, its buildings are rooted in the traditional architecture of its native Mexico. Best known for geometric and planar buildings with stucco walls, painted in reds and coppers, yellows, purples, and blues, the classic Mexican house plan is a recurrent theme in LEGORRETA's oeuvre, with courtyards, water features, and arcades playing a prominent role. Ricardo Legorreta, who shared Luis Barragan's search for a contemporary Mexican architecture, founded the firm in 1965 and was joined in the early 1990s by his son Victor, when the firm became Legorreta + Legorreta. The Mexico City-based firm, formed by more than seventy people, is currently working on projects both in Mexico and abroad. This volume features more than thirty projects from the past decade, ranging from an elegant residence in Beverly Hills and a seaside retreat in Greece to condominiums in Acapulco and houses in Mexico City. The book also includes major commercial, institutional, and educational projects in the United States, Mexico, Qatar, Africa, Brazil and Guatemala.

Egypt in the sixties and seventies for the Salem family was a balance between keeping Islamic tradition at home and attending the secular system of public schools, which would provide us with the best of opportunities, and form us into what my parents considered model Muslims. Both traditional Islamic practice and a breadth of scholarship were to be revered, in line with the great Islamic thinkers that always inspired us like Imam Mohamed Abdu and M. Rashid Reda.1

I was first exposed to other cultures and peoples when I traveled on foot and auto-stop on a forty-day journey to Europe in the summer of 1974. I was only fourteen at the time, but that journey taught me many valuable lessons, including the importance of being independent, self-sufficient, relating to others and understanding between cultures and people. That journey to Europe was followed by three more journeys to Europe and the Middle East for the following three summers, before our family emigrated and settled in California in the late seventies. Having lived in three different countries on three different continents, I have had no choice but to consider many different points of view, not only in my own acclimation from Egyptian to American culture, and then to Indian culture and back to American, but in my desire to understand the Middle East conflict at its root. Many of my relatives and friends still reside in Egypt. Therefore, my interest in solving the conflict is both on an ideological and personal level.

My personal and global journey included study at Berkeley and Stanford universities, after which I established myself in a real estate investment business. I then embarked on a trek to the Indian subcontinent, where I spent some time with the pacifist Muslim Tablighi Jamaat movement and experienced again a taste of wandering, joined with outreach to other Muslims and simplicity in living. My passion for solving the conflicts in the Middle East led me to pursue a master’s degree at Yale Divinity School, then a PhD defended at AlAzhar University, Cairo, Egypt, which I was granted in 2015.

By Susan Dr Omer Salem’s excellent book is a must-read for all interested in the Middle East and in relations among the Abrahamic faiths. He presents innovative and workable ideas. Once his basic assumptions are laid down, there is a sing-song quality to his book, as he restates his ideas in several different ways for the myriad of audiences he is trying to reach. Take a look at his incredible resume on the ‘net and you will be amazed at the breadth of one man’s journey. Exposed to so many cultures and societal strata, and a proven patient listener, it is no wonder Omer has come up with proposals for Middle East peace that feel familiar and workable. Indeed, this is a must read!

It speaks to Muslim traditionalists, but let's the reader eavesdrop on the real 'insider' issues. Because scriptural authority has been used to justify contempt for Jews, Muslim leaders can only change attitudes by using scriptural authority to justify respect for Jews. This is the missing piece in the problem. Hearts and minds of young Arab Muslims can be moved by religious leaders and parents that use their scriptures to say Allah requires us to treat the Jews as our respected cousins. Only then will the real desire for peaceful negotiations replace the current ambivalence that keeps cold war (and worse) alive.

From the fifteenth century onwards, as European explorers sailed forth on grand voyages of discovery, their encounters with exotic plants and animals fanned intense scientific interest. Scholars began to examine nature with fresh eyes, and pioneering artists transformed the way nature was seen and understood. In Amazing Rare Things, renowned naturalist and documentary-maker David Attenborough joins with expert colleagues to explore how artists portrayed the natural world during this era of burgeoning scientific interest.

The book focuses on an exquisite selection of natural history drawings and watercolors by Leonardo da Vinci, Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Mark Catesby, and from the collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo—works all held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Attenborough and his coauthors offer lucid commentary on topics ranging from the 30,000-year history of human drawings of the natural world, to Leonardo’s fascination with natural processes, to Catesby’s groundbreaking studies that introduced Europeans to the plants and animals of North America. With 160 full color illustrations, this beautiful book will appeal to readers with interests that extend from art and science to history and nature.

Amazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery, by David Attenborough, Susan Owens, Martin Clayton, Rea Alexandratos

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Beginning with Leonardo da Vinci, this historical overview of scientific illustrators between the late 1400s and the mid-1700s includes beautiful, intricate specimens from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Natural History Museum, among others. Filmmaker Attenborough provides an introductory survey of the artistic representation of plants and animals through human history; succeeding chapters focus on five figures-four artists and one collector-none of whom are well-known in either scientific or art history circles. Cassiano dal Pozzo proves an eager and curious antiquarian, a church functionary in Rome who amassed a remarkable collection of illustrations featuring everything from ancient Roman artifacts, minerals and fossils to newly discovered plants and animals. Stunning work by Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian and Mark Catesby capture plants and animals in their natural state, including dispatches from the New World and fauna newly arrived from foreign lands. Merian proves most fascinating, working in a time (the late 15th century) when women seldom left their homes, let alone traveled unattended to South America to draw insects and plants in the jungles of Dutch Surinam. A true feast for anyone interested in natural history, this marvelous book makes the underappreciated artworks of a passionate, talented group widely accessible. Color illustrations. Exquisite Design, Beautifully Illustrated By Magdalena Bassett As a botanical illustrator, I purchased this book to learn from the masters, and be able to see these vibrantly colorful illustration in full size. I was not disappointed. The book is beautifully printed on creamy paper, the colors look true, and the design is very elegant. I have returned to it time after time to see the different details, and always find something new. It's a great addition to my botanical wonders library.

73 of 77 people found the following review helpful. A "Cabinet" of Curiosities By Gio You'd better read the title of this book carefully before you order it sight unseen. The key word is ART, not 'natural history' or 'age of discovery'. The book is in fact a series of essays about five pioneering scientific illustrators: Leonardo da Vinci, Cassiano dal Pozzo, Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Mark Catesby. I certainly don't wish to scoff at the importance of scientific illustration, or to deny that there is no true line between such illustration and fine art. I only wish the book in hand included a good deal more of the illustrations and less of the sometimes rhapsodic texts. As it happens, this is effectively a 'coffee table' book, large format, high quality paper, excellent color printing -- just the kind of book you'd give as a holiday present to an ungrateful lout like me.Added months later: Since I first looked through this book, I've become deeply impressed by and interested in the lief and work of Maria Sibylla Merian, one of the illustrator-subjects of this book. The plates of her scientific illustrations are phenomenal, and her life was as unique an adventure as that of any woman in Early Modern European history. I refer you to the biographey of her, "Chrysalis", by Kim Todd.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful Environmental Art History Book By Sci Fi Lover I was really impressed with the color illustrations of the artists. I was surprised to see that Leonardo Davinci's art was the worst of any artist in the book. I had heard that David Attenborough had not made enough comments in the book according to one Amazon reviewer, but I found that that was not the case. He certainly is the main author of this book.

How disappointed I was after reading this book. I personally think its an insult to the heroic efforts of those mighty souls who accomplished so much while enduring hatred and bigotry of a magnitude few of us today can imagine.I had to keep reminding myself I was supposedly reading factual accounts because it read more like a cheap novel. I'm going to purchase Hannibal B. Johnson's version in hopes of getting some indepth insight into the important events that unfolded in the town of Greenwood Oklahoma in 1921.

I order this book thinking it would give me a lot of insight into the Tulsa Race Riot, and Black Wall Street. The book is not as factual nor as informative as I was hoping for and like previously stated by another review, reads like a cheap novel.

I originally heard about the book in an email and was so excited that I purchased it that same day! A book about such a serious topic should have been written, edited, and published in a very serious manner; it was not. While there are instances in the book where the characters' speech is written in a way so that you can understand the southern accent, there are numerous (about 3 per page) other instances where you can tell the book wasn't even spell-checked, much less checked for grammatical errors - I mean simple errors that the spell check in Word should have caught! Anyway, overall, this was a great story, but a bad read!

Earle Nelson is one of history's early "pioneer serial killers" committing more than twenty horrific murders during the 1920's. Nicknamed at the time "The Gorilla Man" for the savagery of his rape and necrophiliac murders, he targeted landladies mostly whom he met through 'room to let' classified advertisements. Nelson carried a well-worn Bible for appearance to reassure his female victims before brutally strangling them, raping their corpses, and making a cursory attempt to hide the bodies. In 1926, following the murder of Laura Beal, the newspaper reporters began calling him "the Dark Strangler." Also dubbed the "Original American Monster" Nelson killed women, not only in multiple US cities, but eventually he crossed the border into Canada where he killed several women before authorities finally arrested, convicted and executed this early serial killer. In an era before the term "serial killer" had been coined, Nelson was a serial killer as we today define them.   This book is 150 pages.    This is the 9th book in the Crimes Canada collection. Each month for 2 years, a short-read book (between 100-180 pages) will be published by RJ Parker and Dr. Peter Vronsky     View the books in this series at CrimesCanada.com

He would obtain entrance and access to his victims by answering signs for rooms to rent. He's fascination of killing through strangulation, and other stomach turning acts made this book a real page turner. The dark strangler is the perfect name for this deranged man. Good read.

He was very manipulative and conniving in order to gain the ladies' trust. Mr. Newton did an excellent job in telling this dark tale of an evil 1920's serial killer and the author kept me interested in the story. Very welI researched. I highly recommend this book and other books by Michael Newton.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Evil evil man By Kim Jackson This book was written with great details about a man that deserved everything he had coming to him. It was full of details and short. Michael Newton has went above and beyond to find this information to make a great book. Nelson was a guy I would never want to be around. I would recommend this book to anyone. Innocent women lost their life to a horrible evil no good man.
