Empress of Storms, by Nicola M. Cameron

About the Author Nicola Cameron is a married woman of a certain age who really likes writing about sex. When not writing about sex, she likes to knit. And she may be rather fond of absinthe. Well, it’s true! Okay, okay, the full version: Nicola Cameron has had a healthy interest in sex since puberty, but it wasn’t until 2012 that she decided to write about it. Turns out that the skills picked up during her SF writing career transfer rather nicely to erotic romance and erotica — who knew? When not working, she’s usually making Stuff, kissing her husband, or entertaining her cats.

Empress of Storms is for adults By Wise Young The Empress of Storms is not for pre-teens and only for mature teens because of its sex scenes but it is a great book, the product of a great story teller, who keeps her cards close to the vest and tells a story the way it should be told, with great verve and passion. The latter was of course the surprising part. I had not read any of Nicola Cameron's other books, which have been labelled high fantasy erotic romantic novels. The picture on the front is of a woman, instead of muscle bound men. The story is about Danae, a young queen who had come to Ypres to marry Mathias the King, in liu of his son Lukas who had disappeared for three years already for unknown reasons, after the death of his mother Hanne. She was young but disciplined, committed by treaty to marry into the royal family of Ypres, originally to Lukas but now to Mathias in Lukas' absence. In her private thoughts, she wondered about Mathias. Even as a young girl, she had fantasies about him. Mathias, on the other hand, is still grieving over the loss of Hanne. Danae knew that she may not measure up to a dead wife but hoped that her new husband to be would be at least kind. The story went from there to an exciting adventure to find Lukas, a love story that is realistic and remarkable, full of surprises, and well tied together in a memorable action and romance book. The story turns in very unexpected but well prepared ways that make sense. All the loose strings were tied together in the end. This book was written to begin and end in one volume. The writing is quite good. The vocabulary was complex and appropriate, with relatively few grammatical and spelling errors, a sign of good editing. The characters were real with witty and compelling dialogue, written in the third person. The sex scenes were inventive, sensual, and healthy. I recommend this book highly and am looking forward to more of the same genre and direction from this author.

Fascinating World with Intriguing Magical Elements By Night Owl Reviews 5 / 5 Stars / Top PickReview by: KyraninseFlawless and stunning - Empress of Storms has put Nicola M. Cameron on my must-read list.I'll admit, this story has many of my favorite elements: royal marriage of convenience, unrequited love that ends up being ...well, requited, politics, magic, and enough heat to steam up the room. However, Cameron ties it all together with wit, humor, a supporting cast that just won't quit, and a pair of main characters I can really get behind.Danae is wonderful - she's strong, good at what she does (being queen), but she's also not afraid to be loving and vulnerable. She never fell into the "too strong to be intelligent" trap and almost always acted with grace. As for Matthias, I'm never sure about older men, especially the ones who are still heartbroken over their dead wives, but Cameron managed to put a spin on the situation which both made his persistent heartbreak make sense, but also didn't detract from his love for his previous queen. None of that "well, I didn't truly love her after all even though I've been moping for the last however long".Add in a fascinating world with intriguing magical elements and I'm hooked. I can't wait to see if there's a sequel for Empress of Storms (c'mon, we can't stop here).Disclosure: courtesy copy from the publisher/author for an honest review.

Empress of Storms By Merissa (Archaeolibrarian) This is the story of Matthias and Danae, rulers of their countries, aligned in a political marriage that Danae hopes will become the real thing. She has had a 'crush' on Matthias for years, but he was happily married. Matthias is the one to marry Danae due to the fact that his wife died and his son, who was supposed to marry her, has disappeared. This is an exceptional story, with undercurrents all the way through that will grip and entice you. The steamy scenes were certainly hot, but different to Nicola Cameron's other works. A lot more was left to the reader's imagination, which was a good thing for this book. I found the 'traitor' before the name was revealed, HOWEVER, it still came as a surprise, especially with the reasons given behind it. That is how well this book is written! With a steady and flowing pace, this book with entice you from start to finish. Absolutely recommended and thoroughly enjoyed.* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. *MerissaArchaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

Never Quit Drawing: Sketch Your Way to an Everyday Art Habit, by Laura Simms

About the Author

Kerby Rosanes is a Phillipines-based artist. He works mainly with ordinary black pens to magically illustrate his "doodle" world. Most of his works are characterized by whimsical lines, patterns, characters, and little elements that are spontaneously combined to create massive compositions depicting his everyday experiences or anything that inspires him.

Kerby left his job as a graphic designer in a local company to finally pursue his passion: creating more art for personal projects and for various clients and collaborating with other artists and design agencies around the world. Some of his current clients include Nike, Mazda, the National Art Society, Kult, Typ, Humm, and Puzzle Planet. He is the artist behind Animorphia, Imagimorphia, Doodle Invasion, and the upcoming Doodle Invasion 2, and he has a popular new art series called Geometric Beasts.

Laura Simms is an expert on meaningful work. She challenges conventional wisdom by asking people to ditch their passions and start with purpose. After struggling through her own career transition, Laura developed Your Career Homecoming, her signature career change process, to help people find careers that feel like home. This unorthodox curriculum sidesteps the familiar refrains to either "follow your passion" or "be practical" by emphasizing service, legacy, and each individual's personal relationship to purpose. Over 60 websites, podcasts, and universities have turned to Laura for career advice, including US News & World Report, The Huffington Post, and The University of California, Irvine. Working with clients internationally, Laura is proving that the purpose-driven approach leads to meaningful, profitable careers, and that making a living and making a life go hand in hand. She reluctantly lives in Texas and loves spending time on the front porch with her husband, son, friends, and guitar.

The reason for these pages are to challenge an artist to draw everyday. This book I would recommend to others so they can challenge themselves, and maybe takeup a new hobby.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Mostly blank pages. By Amazon Customer I'm very disappointed with this book. There are maybe 18 pages of content, and the rest of the book is just blank pages for drawing. Yes, well over 100 pages of this book are blank.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed. By Vampi To be honest, I'm disappointed. I was expecting a lot more of Kerby's work and less blank pages. I already have sketchbooks... this is not what I had thought it to be.

Rarely has a character appeared on the American scene of greater color and controversy than John Charles Fremont. Dubbed "The Pathfinder" for having conducted some of the first rigorous scientific explorations of the American west, emigrants used his maps and reports as their guide to Oregon and California. Fremont was instrumental in the military campaigns which secured California for the United States, only to be arrested and court-martialed for mutiny and insubordination. Nominated the young Republican party's first candidate for president, Fremont lost the 1856 election in a bitterly contested campaign. Appointed one of four major-generals at the outbreak of the Civil War, Fremont was placed in command of the Department of the West. Succeeding in holding wavering Missouri for the Union, Lincoln relieved him of his command amid allegations of widespread corruption. Having earned a fortune from his California gold holdings, he was impoverished by railway speculation. Fremont's life was a serious of glorious triumphs and dismal defeats. Through it all, he remained a figure adored by some and despised by others. This short monograph considers the development of the Fremont biography, analyzing works about the life and career of John Charles Fremont in their historical context.

The Biographies of John Charles Fremont, by Hans G. Schantz

From the Author As a small business owner, successful inventor, and scientist, I reduce theory to practice, I figure out and show how things work, and I apply science to solve real-world problems. I enjoy history about colorful characters doing heroic things - what I capture in my #1 Kindle Best Seller The Biographies of John Charles Fremont. I also like technical writing that engages the mind and shows the simple truths behind complex ideas. History and science intertwine with art and creativity in surprising and fascinating ways to yield remarkable technologies. That's what The Art and Science of Ultrawideband (UWB)Antennas is all about. I also appreciate fiction that shows how ordinary people with extraordinary courage and determination can accomplish remarkable things  - the motivation behind my soon-to-be-released debut novel, The Hidden Truth.

From the Inside Flap The 2016 Presidential election features a wide range of Republican contenders. How do they compare to John Charles Fremont, who in 1856 became the very first Republican candidate for President? Adventurer, explorer, military officer, businessman, and U.S. Senator, the current contenders must pool their experience to match Fremont's remarkable resume.

  • Like Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee, and John Kasich, Fremont was a governor. Only he became the military governor of northern California by right of military conquest, not election!
  • Like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Rick Santorum, Fremont was a U.S. Senator -one of the first two U.S. Senators selected by the new state of California to represent the state in Washington.
  • Like Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina, Fremont was a businessperson. His $10M California gold country holdings were worth the equivalent of perhaps a half billion dollars today, making Fremont, like Trump, one of the wealthiest candidates for president in U.S. history.
Fremont's resume included additional accomplishments without parallel among the current contenders. His distinguished career of exploration helped open the West to settlement and popularized the region to countless emigrants who used his reports as their guidebooks: Mormon settlers in Utah,California's Forty-Niners, and emigrants to Oregon. His unorthodox campaign to conquer California ultimately succeeded, but left him court-martialed and disgraced.Fremont's colorful life and career made him vulnerable to allegations of scandal - his campaign was dogged by claims of illegitimate birth, secret Catholicism, and even cannibalism. Some of these claims were true. And Fremont was hindered by his principled and steadfast opposition to the further spread of slavery - the issue that in four short years would propel the nation into a bloody Civil War.The Biographies of John Charles Fremont surveys the career of this amazing character and tells how the story of his life was captured by journalists, historians, and biographers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Of a "Minor" American Hero By Robert C. Tracy This is a fascinating history of the biographies of John Fremont. What a colorful American hero he was! And who would have known about Fremont?! I’d never heard of Fremont until this book. Mr. Schantz gives the reader an objective evaluation of all of the biographies written about Fremont. The biography - “Author’s Forward” - of Mr. Schantz’s own discovery and further pursuit of his interest in John Charles Fremont, is itself a reading adventure. Moreover, “The Biographies of John Charles Fremont” invites further readings. One of the biographies in the book is “Dream West” by David Nevin. Mr. Schantz says that its “factual discrepancies…detract from the power of the novel’s presentation”. But that’s just it; I want the power of a novel to bring home to me the biography of John Fremont. So, thanks to Mr. Schantz’s book, I’ve now got “Dream West”. And then there’s the artist that Fremont hired, Edward M. Kern. I’ve found several books from Amazon about this artist. For example, “Edward M. Kern : The Travels of an Artist – Explorer”. In this book are drawings and sketches from Kern’s adventures with Fremont. I’ve even found online maps – beautiful cartography – by Fremont’s first map maker, Charles Preuss. And what else? Well, Mr. Shantz’s volume has led me from writers to artists. And from artists like Kern to other American West artists of the time, such as a closer look into the art of Albert Bierstadt, who was painting the West that Fremont was seeing in his travels. “The Biographies of John Charles Fremont” is a delight to read. It’s like a microscope that enlarges things I’m familiar with, and introduces new things for further study. And It makes me feel that the heroism of Fremont is the norm of the American spirit; that in any walk of life, one can be like Fremont – fight the elements and battle against even big government and win. And to find that Fremont had a wife just as much a heroic individual as her love for him, is inspiring. This book is a superb history of the biographies of the American spirit, of glimpsing a path untraveled, unknown even. Of finding that path, of taking that path against tremendous odds. And of winning through it all. A terrific read. Inspiring and enjoyable.

It brought John C. Fremont to life, and introduced to me a part of American history I knew little about. As an added bonus after reading the book, I was able to answer a "Jeopardy" question--or should I say pose a "Jeopardy" question--"Who was John C. Fremont?"

The second book is also a basic book that outlines some of the things a photographer should do or have when starting a photography business. The author does not provide enough details to make it a workbook to follow step-by-step. You will require another source or two to make it happen for you.

Sketching & Illustrating Birds: Professional Drawing Class, by Juan Varela Simó

Review “The book is suitable for a wide range of readers―students, bird watchers, natural-scienceteachers―but is especially so for artists searching for clear, practical information. They will find more than one would expect: basic structure, skeletons, skulls, various ratios, plumage movements, even courtship behaviors! In the chapter, The Art of Flying, Simá½¹ delves into perspective and proportions during flight. Of particular benefit is the weight given to actually entering natural habitats rather than copying photographs of birds. Juan Verela Simá½¹ is a productive, much-lauded author and illustrator who also happens to be an ornithologist. Countless species from all over the world are represented. And the artwork is terrific.”—Arts & Activities

About the Author Juan Verela Simó is an ornithologist (biologist specializing in birds) and a self-taught artist. He is an acclaimed author and illustrator who has contributed to more than 40 books, encyclopedias, and specialist periodicals. His work has been exhibited in more than 30 museums and galleries.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. a sweet romance.. By Gatorfan This is a fun, sweet romance. Because of his father's will, the hero must find a bride to keep controlling interest in the company he has helped to build. The heroine is in dire need of funds. her father is battling cancer and in order to get an experimental drug, he needs money fast. Two people with a need. Each can help out the other so they enter into a deal to marry for one year, she gets the money and he gets the wife and control of his company.Seems simple enough until feelings start to enter the picture. This is a very entertaining read. There is no sex involved so any age could read it. I think even the Christian readers would enjoy it. I definitely recommend it. The couple get their HEA after a bit of turmoil and ice cream!!!I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

I love that I could read it all in one sitting and get to the happy ending. I love that Volney was able to pack so much into such a short space that I felt I knew the characters, that Lilia was an old friend. I found myself rooting for both Lilia and Vincent. And I hated that it was over so soon. I wanted to hear more, see more, of these characters! I hope that Volney will write more books set in Casper and allow us to see more of Lilia and Vincent, as well as get to know some of their siblings that we saw peripherally in this story. Volney did a great job of building solid stories for both Lilia and Vincent that made it believable they would enter into their deal and also made them both likeable people. I especially liked that Vincent showed his immediate attraction to Lilia, admitted that he should have been more cautious in entering the deal, and struggled with thinking Lilia was shallow because of the money in spite of what he saw and liked about her first hand. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good romance story!I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. heartwarming for the holidays By L. Naylor I admit it - back when I lived in the south and began missing the snow, few thing brought back that winter feeling like a cozy holiday romance, where you can practically taste the hot chocolate and feel the snow flakes. This year, I got lucky and receive an ARC of The December Deal, which hit all those warm fuzzy notes and gave me a serious hankering for ice cream.World wanderer Lilia returns to her home town when her father takes ill. No matter how much she crunches the numbers, she can't afford his treatment. Businessman Luke has plenty of money, but needs a bride to keep ownership of his family business. With a chance meeting in a bar, the strangers decide to help each other out. I love how the characters played their motives close to the vest - even after a quickie marriage. It's a credit to the author that the marriage of convenience comes off as believable in a contemporary setting. As for the rest, no spoilers, but Volney does a great job tugging those heartstrings without drifting into cliché.This is a quick read, but perfect for a cozy afternoon on the couch to reaffirm the good in this world.

The story of Dunbar, the neighborhood that took its name from the school in its midst, is in many ways the story of America. An almost forgotten 160-acre swatch of land north of the town of Tucson, Arizona, it was inhabited by a hardy mix of Anglos, Mexicans, Yaqui Indians, colored people (as African-Americans were called then), and Chinese. Separated from downtown Tucson by the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks, Dunbar's northernmost blocks had been the Court Street Cemetery since 1875. Then, in 1912, statehood changed everything. It introduced mandatory school segregation which forced colored children to attend schools built only for them. In response, the Tucson school board converted an undertaker parlor/bakery into such a facility. Within five years the increasing number of students led to the construction of a school at 300 N. 2nd Street, which became the focal point of the neighborhood. The board named it the Paul Laurence Dunbar School after the renowned colored poet. Dunbar: The Neighborhood, the School, and the People, 1940-1965 tells the heartfelt and moving story of that community, and the other neighborhoods that fed into the school, as they all grew and thrived. It is told, as much as possible, using the words of those who lived it. The twenty-five years noted in the title began with the arrivals of Principal Morgan Maxwell, Sr., and Dr. Robert D. Morrow, superintendent of Tucson School District No.1; it spanned three wars, the first school integration, and the march of history.

There were people mentioned that I met years ago and families that I never met but I heard about. This brings to light how civil rights and Tucson progressed through a interesting time in American History.

A History Lesson Beyond Dunbar By Zelema Harris This well written and documented history of the Dunbar area in Tucson, AZ is a must read for those interested in segregation in public education, World War II, the impact of Brown versus the Topeka Board of Education and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These topics provide the framework for leaders who emerged during those periods. While the focus is on Tucson, Arizona and its uniqueness anyone growing up during segregation can identify with the book. Dunbar is informative, entertaining and a poignant reminder that such a rich history deserves a place in our schools, libraries, and our homes.

Reading with Pride By Ernest McCray Aloma Barnes describes how this wonderfully easy and nice read came about as she and three other women, old childhood friends of mine, passed the time on the last miles of a trip, naming streets and people I knew well. At the books end I felt that I knew these places and folks even better. One does not have to know a thing about the neighborhood, or Tucson, at large, to appreciate the contributions the Dunbar neighborhood and Dunbar school made to the city and our lives as residents there. I was left with a renewed feeling of pride in having gone to the only school I could attend because of the darkness of my skin; pride in having learned how to fit in within a diverse community, one that was home to African Americans and Mexican Americans and European Americans too, all of us running into each other at a number of Chinese mom and pop markets where our credit was good and we were all treated with respect. It's a story of people overcoming and finding their place in a world where lovewas too often scarce. A story mostly of triumph. The kind of story most people appreciate.

Jose Raoul Capablanca is widely regarded as the strongest chess player who ever lived prior to Bobby Fischer. The authoritative work, “The Rating of Chess Players Past and Present” by Arpad Elo, inventor of the modern rating system, ISBN 0923891277, rates Capablanca as 2725, higher than any other player in history prior to Fischer. The great thing about Capablanca's style of play is he tended to play simple, direct moves, moves that even an amateur player can find over the board. José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was the third World Champion, reigning from 1921 until 1927. Renowned for the simplicity of his play, his legendary endgame prowess, accuracy, and the speed of his play, he earned the nickname of the "Human Chess Machine". Jose Raul Capablanca was born in Havana. Capablanca's ideas are still relevant on the world stage of chess. His images are a powerful aid to the student board secrets. In this volume Harry Golombek, the distinguished chess correspondent of the times and one of Great Britain's leading players, has bought together Capablanca's Hundred Best Games. These will provide the expert as well as the beginner with a new insight into the master's extraordinary grasp of the game's fundamental strategic principles, the brilliance of his tactical development. Golombek's clearly written notes highlight the games most crucial phases and provide the reader with many interesting clues as to possible variations.

Jose Capablanca was a phenomenon who burst onto the chess world and took top prize in the first ever elite tournament in which he participated. This was at San Sebastian - otherwise known as Donostia - in the Basque country of Spain in 1911. Capablanca's style was serene - no position seemed to trouble him, and he crushed most of the established European grandmasters with seemingly little effort. Only against the mighty Lasker did he experience serious problems. Then in 1921 Capa - as he was known - obliterated Lasker in their world title match and took the championship without losing a single game. Other triumphs followed, such as London 1922, and Capablanca acquired the legend of an invincible superman when he went for 8 years without losing a game! His supreme moment was in New York 1927 - a quadruple round trial of strength between Capa himself Alekhine, Nimzowitsch and three other contenders for the crown. Capa whitewashed the field, creating a fresh masterpiece practically every day. Possibly this easy victory left him over-confident for later the same year he lost his world title to Alekhine.Grandmaster Emeritus Harry Golombek was from his early days a worshipper at the shrine of Capablanca's genius. In this book he lucidly expounds the thinking behind the Cuban champion's greatest achievements and faithfully records every subtle nuance of his extraordinary ability to cut to the essence of what was truly transpiring amongst the myriad complexities of the chess board. If any player truly exemplified the classical style, it was Capablanca.Harry Golombek was perhaps the king of chess writers. Chess correspondent for The London Times and The Observer, he possessed an unrivalled gift for transforming a chess game into an heroic saga with himself as the bard, singing the exploits of his chosen heroes of the mind. Several times British Champion, Golombek also played top board for England in the Olympiad and represented the British Chess Federation in the FIDE World Championship cycle. He was fluent in Russian and personally attended the World Chess Championships of 1954, 1957 and 1958 as a judge

Some of the Best of the Art of Dylan Rosser By Grady Harp To have a book that has excerpted the best of the best of the photographic artistry of Dylan Rosser, images that have been previously part the highly successful monographs of the male nude - RED, X-POSED, NAKED - seems like the finest gift around. His images are so excellent and so sensual that it is best to be reminded or the credentials of the artist.Originally from South Africa, Dylan Rosser started his career in the graphic design field, working on various lifestyle magazines in Cape Town. Starting out as a Junior Designer, he worked his way up to Art Director before moving to London in 1998. It was this move that brought about his change in direction, although his graphic design background still shows through in his work today. His work, featuring models from the UK as well as abroad, focuses on the sculptural beauty of the male form. Working with light and shadow, his style brings out the athleticism and sensuality of his subjects.A fellow colleague of his, a gifted artist also, Rick Day has said the following: `I first met Dylan back in 2008. It was my first time shooting another photographer so I was a bit nervous. When Dylan arrived at my studio, all my nervous energy dissipated. He was not only quite handsome but genuine. I was working on my first book for Bruno Gmünder and was not really familiar with a lot of the photographers on their roster. Since our first encounter I have been following Dylan's work and am always amazed at his attention to detail as well as his ability to find such nice subject matter. I love that I am writing for this book Naked, because when I think of Dylan's work, the last thing I think about is clothing. Dylan dresses his models in beautiful lighting and often times presents those in an almost sterile environment yet bathing them in richly saturated color. His images are stark, erotic and effortless ... and trust me ... that is a talent within itself. I am honored to call him my friend and I look forward to seeing where he takes us next.'For some to the finest images of the male nude this collection is at the top of the list - a wise choice for Bruno Gmünder to offer as an instant replay of sorts. It serves as a well deserved honor that his works are gathered in this very handsome collection. Grady Harp, July 13
