By Tiffanee Wylie This book is about Nadira Olaru, a Vampire Princess and nurse, and Zac Cooper, a human Police Detective, who are fated mates. Nadira and Cooper meet and are just drawn together. The heat and chemistry between them fly off the pages.Nadira's the youngest of her family with four over protective brothers. While her parents are out of town the necromancer's, who were thought to be gone, propose a peace treaty. All they want is the impossible...I loved this book so much I kept going back and rereading all my favorite parts before going forward.I didn't want this book to end and can NOT wait for the next book. I recommend you read this book it is Amazing!I received this ARC for a honest review!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Can I have the next one already? By Ivette Pacheco Nadira, a vampire Princess who's just find out her mate is Human; plus she's the youngest and only girl of her over protective siblings...And Cooper, just a normal and human Cop working on a new case of unexplainable deaths.OMG I enjoyed the story 'cause its so exiting, so sexy, and the last scene with the King and Queen...so damn cute. Well this is the first book of the series, and I can not wait for book two!!!The author is new to me and I got hooked, even when I have on my TBR her other 2 books I decided to start with this one and I freakin love it!!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Okay By Ashley Not a bad start but I'm not completely blown away. There was a lot of information that was half explained and I was left wanting more. I hope the series divulges further into this world of Necromancers, vampires and humans. I look forward to learning more. One thing that bugged me was the book mentioned that Nadira had a hard time seeing in the dark at one point but then the vampires, her included were fighting just fine in the dark so I was a little confused by this. I'm not sure if the author overlooked this or if it was something she was trying to change but didn't fully commit to since vampires should be able to see just fine in the dark. The characters themselves weren't bad but I wanted more. I would've loved more development and interaction with their relationship. All in all not bad. I'm curious enough to see where the story goes and I hope that the world develops further.

The American cultural stereotype might equate trailers with survival, but here in Boulder, people are choosing the trailer park as a way to thrive. Through interviews and photographs “Trailer Park People” explores the value of downsizing, settling in, growing a garden, creating community, and investing in less. When we explored this mobile home park in the heart of Boulder, Colorado, we found a hub of conscious living. By choosing a tiny space, residents find they can live more sustainably and simply, in one of America’s most beautiful cities.

About the Author Eber Pettit (1802–1885) was an abolitionist and a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Operating out of Fredonia, New York, for at least two decades preceding the Civil War, Pettit helped runaway slaves make their way to Canada. In 1868, he began chronicling his experiences for a local newspaper, and they were eventually published as Sketches in the History of the Underground Railroad (1879).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. There are many better books available on this subject.... By adknative If you're looking for anonymous tales of runaway slaves, this might be of interest... if you're looking for historical record or researching historical facts, look elsewhere. This is a collection of tales which might have been true... or may have been the fictional work of someone with a bit of imagination. No locations are given, specifically... no names, places, dates or identities are included that could be checked against fact for any historical accuracy. There would be no way to cite this work for any research nor, in fact, any reason to. All of the tales may have an element of truth to them... or none of them might. There is no way to tell. The author spent his time being clever, hinting at secrets but never sharing them. This was not written during the days when the Underground Railroad was still active and I see no reason for the secrecy maintained throughout the book... it would have been a better read if dates and places, as well as true names, hadd been given.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Book By Lisa Antunes Excellent book for those just beginning to Zen Doodle or those who are more advanced it gives clear ideas on how to develop your tangles as well as examples and many patterns as well as encouragement for those of us who become discouraged easily. I have bought a few books on this topic and this one by far has more practical advice on how to start, the different mediums you can use, how to go about lettering, design composition but most importantly she encourages exploration to find your own style. I am very happy with the book best one I have bought to date, she also has a YouTube Channel that show you how to draw many tangles I have been a fan of hers since the beginning.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Creativity unleashed! By Diane R. Great book. Very well written, informative and inspiring. Not only has it shown me new strokes and tangles, it has really opened up a new way to look at coloring my tangles. This book has exceeded my expectations, and I would recommend this book.

I shared the book with my sister this weekend, and now she's hooked and has ordered her own copy. I can't wait for future books. Thanks Tiffany!

Douglas does indeed save the bonny Hannah or at least her home. He does have the chance to meet Bonnie Prince Charlie. Dougal gives him the gift of mercy. A great series. I wanted him to have a chance for a full happy mortal life with Hannah.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Finally! By Amazon Customer I suppose someone had to finally confront Bonny Prince Charlie, but I thought Dougal and Hannah would be given their chance at a life and love. I'm not sure I liked this ending as well, but it was different and they ended up together in the end. So........

Each book is completely different but based off the same event. This story was well written and the ending was heartbreaking. Good but sad at the same time. You will laugh and cry.

Tangata Whenua: A History presents a rich narrative of the Māori past from ancient origins in South China to the twenty-first century, in a handy paperback format. The authoritative text is drawn directly from the award-winning Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History; the full text of the big hardback is available in a reader-friendly edition, ideal for students and for bedtime reading, and a perfect gift for those whose budgets do not stretch to the illustrated edition. Maps and diagrams complement the text, along with a full set of references and the important statistical appendix. Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History was published to widespread acclaim in late 2014. This magnificent history has featured regularly in the award lists: winner of the 2015 Royal Society Science Book Prize, shortlisted for the international Ernest Scott Prize, winner of the Te Kōrero o Mua (History) Award at the Ngā Kupu ora Aotearoa Māori Book Awards, and Gold in the Pride in Print Awards. The importance of this history to New Zealand cannot be overstated. Māori leaders emphatically endorsed the book, as have reviewers and younger commentators. They speak of the way Tangata Whenua draws together different strands of knowledge – from historical research through archaeology and science to oral tradition. They remark on the contribution this book makes to evolving knowledge, describing it as ‘a canvas to paint the future on’. And many comment on the contribution it makes to the growth of understanding between the people of this country.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A study in two and a half parts but still state of the art By D A Booth This is the second time that I have tried to review this very important work so pardon me if I repeat myself a bit. The lengthy opening section, on pre-European contact New Zealand, comes as close to being the state of the art as I believe is possible. Rigorously academic and, at times, a little on the dry side but still contains comments that some will find controversial. Thoroughly referenced. The rest of the book covers the contact period through to the present day and wanders from being academically historical to social commentary, hence the "two and a half parts" header. While the theme of settler avariciousness and duplicity is no doubt largely accurate it tends to minimize Maori roles in defining their own history. The nearer the present, the more one-eyed it becomes, to take but one example, Maori gangs, in their example, Black Power, almost certainly did provide some sorts of social services but they were also a violent gang. I doubt if one could say the same for the Mongrel Mob. However, for all that I am very glad that I bought and read this book. I have read a BWB E-Book before and its was very badly edited something which is definitely not true for this excellent production.

‘I do not want to die. The thought that we may be cut off from each other is so terrible and that our babe may grow up without my knowing her and without her knowing me. It is difficult to face. Know through all your life that I loved you and baby with all my heart and soul, that you two sweet things were just all the world to me’

Captain Charlie May was killed, aged 27, in the early morning of 1st July 1916, leading the men of ‘B Company’, 22nd Manchester Service Battalion (the Manchester Pals) into action on the first day of the Somme.

This tolerant and immensely likeable man had been born in New Zealand and – against King’s regulations – he kept a diary in seven small, wallet-sized pocket books. A journalist before the war and a born storyteller, May’s diaries give a vivid picture of battalion life in and behind the trenches during the build-up to the greatest battle fought by a British army and are filled with the friendships and tensions, the home-sickness, frustrations, delays and endless postponements, the fog of ignorance, the combination of boredom and terror to which every man that has ever fought could testify.

His diaries reflect on the progress of the war, tell jokes – good and bad, give details of horse-rides along the Somme valley, afternoons with a fishing rod, lunch in Amiens, a gastronomic celebration of Christmas 1915 and concerts in ‘Whiz Bang Hall’. He describes battles not just with the enemy, but with rats, crows and on the makeshift football pitch – all recorded with a freshness that brings these stories home as if for the first time.

The diaries are also written as an extended and deeply-moving love letter to his wife Maude and baby daughter Pauline. ‘I do not want to die’, he wrote – ‘Not that I mind for myself. If it be that I am to go, I am ready. But the thought that I may never see you or our darling baby again turns my bowels to water.’

Fresh, eloquent and warm, these diaries were kept secret from the censor and were delivered to his wife after his death by a fellow soldier in Charlie’s company. Edited by his great-nephew and published for the first time, these diaries give an unforgettable account of the war that took Charlie May’s life, and millions of others like him.

To Fight Alongside Friends: The First World War Diaries of Charlie MayFrom William Collins

Review 'May proved to be a natural diarist, as wry as he was sharp-eyed' Daily Mail, Books of the Year 'What shines through like sunshine is Charlie May's default belief in service to country, his quiet commitment to others over self, and his sheer decency. You could bet your life on Charlie. And, in a way, we did' The Times 'Captain May's words offer a rare and vivid insight into life in the trenches: of rats and death, and the men's optimism as they prepared to go into battle. They also read as a moving love letter to the wife he adored and the little girl he couldn't wait to be reunited with' Daily Express 'Sensitive and bright ... May is a gifted storyteller and his uncensored diary makes for fine reading' Daily Mail '[We] want to hear the voices of those who were there, unencumbered by 21st century prejudices ... 'To Fight Alongside Friends' [is] the disarmingly jaunty, previously unpublished diaries of Captain Charlie May ... beautifully edited and minutely annotated' Sunday Times 'Reflective and acute ... By July 1st 1916, when the last diary entry was entered at 5.45am, the reader feels that they know Charlie May, and what follows comes as a shock, as if a cinema reel had broken in mid-reel ... [the diaries] linger in the memory [and] deserve to be made available to a wider audience. They testify to how the 1914 generation drew on literary expression to order and to mediate what is commonly supposed to have been an incommunicably dreadful experience' Financial Times 'Every so often one comes across a diary where it is the sense of personality behind it that lift it out of the ordinary: such a diary is that of Captain Charlie May' David Crane 'The diary of Captain Charlie May provides a fascinating insight into the mind of a young British officer. It is peppered with intriguing insights, acute observations and the hectic, heart-stopping flurries of nocturnal trench raids' Robin Cross, author of the bestselling 'VE-Day'

About the Author Born in Dunedin, Charles Campbell May, is one of the most quoted New Zealand soldiers of World War I. He was killed in 'No Man's Land' on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. Passages from his wartime diaries have been anthologised in books, academic and popular, about that war and that battle. His diaries, the originals of which are in the Regimental Archive near Manchester, have pride of place in the Imperial War Museum in London. Gerry Harrison is Charlie May's great-nephew. He has been an actor and worked in film and TV production and served as a councillor for twelve years. Meanwhile he has written pieces for the Guardian and The Times, and the Irish Times. Best Ebook Rory McEwen: The Colours of RealityFrom Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Rory McEwen strummed his way onto the Ed Sullivan show, sat in on a sitar session with George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, and was a leader in the post-war folksong revival. Yet arguably his greatest legacy was not in the field of music—a talented, precise artist, McEwen revolutionized the field of botanical art. McEwen developed a distinctive style working on unadorned vellum, presenting botanical subject matter with scientific precision and artistic flair, without ever compromising one for the other. At a time when such paintings focused on perfect specimens, McEwen found beauty in imperfections, which made his creations breathtakingly realistic. His paintings have been an inspiration to later generations of botanical artists and his work can be found in collections around the world, including the MoMA, the Tate, the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Modern Art Scotland. This revised edition of the best-selling Rory McEwen: The Colours of Reality adds more artwork from McEwen and a soulful foreword by musician Jools Holland. Four sections consider McEwen from four different angles: his life and music, his contributions to the avant-garde, his work as a botanical painter, and his influence and legacy.   Originally published to coincide with an exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in 2013, and developed in close collaboration with the McEwen family, this is the first major gathering of McEwen’s work since 1989.

Rory McEwen: The Colours of RealityFrom Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Review It seems odd that a singer, musician, television performer and sculptor who typified the 1960s as vividly as Rory McEwen should now be known principally for his botanical paintings. From the early 1950s until his tragically early death in 1982 he was everywhere and knew everyone, but as The Colours of Reality shows, McEwen was never more himself than when working within the discipline and timeless tradition of an art form that links him with the greatest flower painters of the past. Not every botanical painter can count Jim Dine, Joseph Beuys and Ravi Shankar as his friends, play the 12-string guitar, shoot at Balmoral, influence Van Morrison, bolster the fortunes of the Wakefield and North of England Tulip Society and drive a purple Ferrari with 'Ecosse' on the tail. The natural world, though, was his compulsion: I paint flowers as a way of getting as close as possible to what I perceive as the truth, my truth of the time in which I live. This mostly means looking, looking and thinking... It is impossible not to see in his extraordinary studies of decaying leaves a reflection of his own mortality, but these are not mere vanitas paintings. He imbued everything he painted with an anthropomorphic life, and in his hands a curved stem, a bent head, a wrinkled skin or an infestation of insects is a celebration of individuality rather than dispassionate botanical observation.Often the arrangement of plants seems to speak of relationships - two anemones look like birds conducting an elaborate courtship ritual, fritillaries are apparently holding hands - but these are illustrations that need close scrutiny rather than description. Revised and reprinted after the hugely successful monographic exhibition at Kew two years ago, this elegant book with its beautiful reproductions and sumptuous 'negative spaces' does full justice not just to the botanical works, but to the story as a whole of an artist who seems to have touched the lives of everyone who ever knew him.

About the Author Martyn Rix is the editor of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and author or editor of numerous books, including The Golden Age of Botanical Art, The Genus Lachenalia, and Treasured Trees, all published by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Envelopes were standard fare, not too thick and you can kind of see the card through them, but they fit well. These have a small message inside, but they're mostly blank so I ended up personalizing them. Especially because they arrived in such a timely manner. Would buy again.

Best Ebook PDF Online The Life of William Cowper (Classic Reprint), by Thomas Wright

Excerpt from The Life of William CowperNearly a century has passed since the death of William Cowper, and few poets have had more written about them. The first to commence a systematic life of him was his old friend the Rev. John Newton, in 1800, a few months after the poet's death. No more than sixteen pages, however, were actually written, the burden of the author's years proving too great an obstacle. The Life by Hayley, the friend of Cowper's last decade - a work containing much valuable material - first appeared in two volumes in 1803, to which two more were added in 1806. Hayley's correspondence with Lady Hesketh, now in the British Museum (Addit. MS. 30803 A, B) shows under what difficulties this Life was written. Hayley had the hardest work imaginable to get Lady Hesketh and Theodora to tell him anything. Never, perhaps, in the history of literature was biographer so handicapped. "The biographer of Cowper," her ladyship told him, "whoever he might be, should not consider himself as the writer of a Novel, and indeed I am firmly of opinion that you should deal only in generals, and by no means give a particular account of the life of our friend."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By David S. Mohler This is a well written and engaging biography of a poet better known to us common-folk by his poems and phrases than his name (which is pronounced "cooper".) This is the man who coined the phrase, "Variety is the spice of life" and wrote such moving hymns as, "There is a fountain filled with blood".The biographer wrote in short, cameo-like sections with sufficient detail to make the entire life of William Copwer complete and easy to follow. The writing style is sort of "conversational", as if Wright is telling the story of Cowper's life, rather than reciting the dry facts of it.Highly recommended.

Determined to 'do his bit', Des Evans absconded from a reserved occupation in 1939 and joined the newly formed Reconnaissance Corps. He saw action in North Africa and Italy before being evacuated back to England with pneumonia in early 1944. Once fully recovered, he volunteered as a wireless operator with 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron. After parachute training, he joined C Troop in time to play his role in Operation MARKET GARDEN, the ill-fated but glorious attempt to seize the Rhine Bridge at Arnhem. In this gripping memoir, Des vividly describes both the intense action and his emotions following the drop. At first there was an unreal sense of calm but this was soon to evaporate. In the intense action that followed, Des was ambushed twice and badly wounded. Fortunate to survive, he became a POW. After eight long months' captivity moving between camps, Des escaped to American lines.Sadly, but inevitably, new first-hand accounts by Second World War veterans are becoming increasingly rare. Covering the author's frontline action in three theaters and his POW and escape experiences, With Recce at Arnhem is a gem. Some readers may find its brutal honesty disturbing but war has never been for the faint-hearted

The years 1944 and 1945 were pivotal in the development of Australia's approach to strategy during the Second World War and beyond. While the main battlefront of the Pacific War had moved further north, Australian air, land and sea forces continued to make a significant contribution to the Allied campaign and towards achieving Australia's strategic interests and objectives. In New Guinea, Australian operations secured territories and released men from service, while in Borneo a highly successful campaign was clouded by uncertain motives and questionable strategy. Australia 1944–45: Victory in the Pacific examines this complex and fascinating period, which has been largely under-represented in Australian military history. Peter Dean leads a team of highly regarded military historians in assessing Australian, Allied and Japanese strategies, the conduct of the campaigns in the Southwest Pacific Area and Australia's significant role in achieving victory.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A wide ranging overview By Robbo This is the third and final volume of works edited by Peter Dean concerned with the Australian contribution to the war in the South-West Pacific. Designed ‘to bring together the themes from the first two books’, “Australia 1944-45”, like its predecessors, covers a broad ranging canvas from war and operational strategy to intelligence and combat operations, conveyed through chapters written by a fine cast of mainly Australian academic historians, but includes Americans Daniel Marston and Kevin Holzimmer and Japanese Hiroyuki Shindo. It is also an intertwined tale of frustrations and controversial campaigns, after Douglas MacArthur, Commander in Chief (CinC) South-West Pacific Area (SWPA), sidelined the Australians, denying them a part in the re-conquest of the Philippines, and directing instead that they clear the by-passed Japanese from northern New Guinea, Bougainville, and New Britain, followed by the amphibious landings in Borneo. Delivered thematically in six parts embracing 15 chapters, the authors deliver snapshots of the various issues confronting Australia and the contributions the nation made in the final years of the Pacific War; in doing so they provide an excellent primer for those wishing to delve further into the subjects addressed. Free of the usual hubris and mythology associated with much of Australian ‘popular military history’, we are presented with pragmatic analysis placing the Australian contributions in the political and strategic context of a minor ally with its own national interests, and cascading down through the all important issues of intelligence, training and logistics to the campaigns fought in the last 18 months of the Pacific War. A theme running through many of the chapters is that while willing to contribute its fair share of the burden, a minor ally’s strategic interests will always be subverted to the needs and ambitions of those of the big and powerful, despite what the country’s politicians and military leaders may wish and argue for. Thus Part 1 leads off with a splendid discussion of Australia’s war strategy, highlighting how little impact Curtin had on the British and American leaders, followed by an equally fine study on the military strategy that saw the Australians relegated to a minor role, after they had borne the brunt of the fighting in New Guinea in 1942-43. Balancing these is an informative narrative of Japanese strategy and operations in the SWPA, a chapter that could have been improved with a more judicious editing of a rather repetitive style. Part 2 addresses two diverse topics: a wide ranging consideration of Australian prisoners of war, and a study of the impact of the war on the Home Front, both making a social commentary on the impact of the war upon the Australian community. The remaining Parts are concerned with the waging of war in all its facets: training, intelligence, special operations, logistics, amphibious warfare, and fighting, including a chapter each on the RAN, the RAAF, and each of the campaigns and amphibious landings. Each is written with candour, highlighting strengths and weaknesses, success and failures, infighting and cooperation, warts and all. Starting from a non-existent or very low base in 1939 one is struck by the very considerable developments in Australia’s intelligence, naval, military and air capacities that, by 1945, saw the largest forces the country has ever committed to operations, and which formed the basis of existing post war capabilities. Underpinning these capabilities, for the Army at least, was thorough training and the development of doctrine based on experience in earlier campaigns, that enabled them to outfight the Japanese in jungle warfare, and deliver the most complex amphibious operations ever undertaken by Australians. Nonetheless, the authors acknowledge that the delivery of these capabilities to the battlefield depended very much on the enormous amphibious capabilities and logistic support supplied by their American ally, and at the behest of MacArthur and his principal commanders. Furthermore, although the operations themselves were planned and led by the Australian commanders, these commitments were directed by their powerful ally, under whose overall command they were under, leading to the frustrations of the RAAF, the Army and to some extent the Government, at being sidelined from the main game. It underpins the view that if there ever was an Australian way of warfare it is to wage war as a junior partner under a powerful ally. While others have regarded the Australian’s final campaigns as ‘an unnecessary war’ those authors writing on them in this book, and on the strategic context, mostly disagree, pointing out they were conceived at a time when the war was expected to continue into 1946 and beyond. More importantly, they argue, with varying degrees of persuasiveness, those fought in New Guinea, New Britain and Bougainville had imperatives associated with Australian national interests which could not be ignored, while those in Borneo were part of a longer term strategy to free the Dutch East Indies and Malaya. Their chapters reinforce the view that history based on narrow considerations, and the casualty count, simply distort the wider historical context leading to myths and incorrect conclusions. The only criticisms are that some chapters would have benefited with editing to provide a more flowing style, and there is a paucity of good maps. Those provided are sparse, and while they give an overview of each campaign, they lack the detail to match the quality of the written word, and are bundled together rather than supporting the chapter they refer to. Notwithstanding this, “Australia 1944-45” delivers a balanced, erudite and comprehensive overview of the nation’s concerns and commitments in the closing two years of the Pacific War, with lessons that are relevant to Australian political and military leaders today. It is a worthy successor to the previous two volumes.
