About the Author Jenika is just your average woman. She lives in the too hot northeast with her husband and their young daughter. Thankfully, he shares her unusual sense of humour and naughty nature, so finding material for her stories isn t a problem. Along with taking care of their daughter, they have to keep an eye on Milo and Otis, their spunky cats. When not writing, Jenika works full-time and attends nursing school. Writing is Jenika's number one passion, but since life gets in the way, she isn't able to write full-time (at least not yet). Jenika started writing at a very young age when her first story consisted of a young girl who traveled to an exotic island and found a magical doll. That story has long since disappeared, but her passion for writing hasn t.Sam Crescent has always had a love of fiction, through her teen years she would find friendship between the pages rather than in an actual person. By the time she turned sixteen she discovered mills and boon and never looked back. She loved the quick happily-ever-after read. A guarantee that no matter what happened the heroes and heroines would always find their soul mate. After college and starting a degree, one lonely bored night she searched the internet looking for a new author to read. On that night and for the years to come she discovered romantica and erotic writing.

The worst part of the whole screwed up scenario is that they were her family. She lived in a family of torturous, brutal, wolves in sheep clothing type of men. Women were objects and possessions they hold no value other than the value put upon them for procreating and serving. Elena's father wants power and the best way to get it is to marry her to a powerful man. The worst thing is that powerful man is her uncle. This is not the life she wants so she wants so she makes her own choices and runs.Striker is empty and unfulfilled. Something big is missing but he'll be damned if he knows what it is. Nothing is enough anymore and it's got him on edge. He's practically buzzing with tension when he walks in the diner and spots Elena. She's quietly submissive and that yanks the chain of the beast within him, and now that it's awake there's no going back.Striker is male possessive protector at its very finest. He is exactly what Elena needs to erase the life she suffered. A MUST READ!!I am a huge Jenika Snow fan and I inhale everything she writes. This series is one of my favorites and I cannot wait for Nerd's story to see him struggle with love!

I loved the storyline. I loved Elena. And I FREAKIN ADORE Striker. Can I have him?! I'm serious! He was amazing. Hot, sexy, dangerous, kinky and so freakin protective and sweet in bikerish way. I just want to eat him.Oh, though, I loved this story, it broke my heart too. Why?! Two words. Deanna & Demon. My heart is in pieces for them. Be prepared for a lot of tears.

Vodou has often served as a scapegoat for Haiti’s problems, from political upheavals to natural disasters. This tradition of scapegoating stretches back to the nation’s founding and forms part of a contest over the legitimacy of the religion, both beyond and within Haiti’s borders. The Spirits and the Law examines that vexed history, asking why, from 1835 to 1987, Haiti banned many popular ritual practices. To find out, Kate Ramsey begins with the Haitian Revolution and its aftermath. Fearful of an independent black nation inspiring similar revolts, the United States, France, and the rest of Europe ostracized Haiti. Successive Haitian governments, seeking to counter the image of Haiti as primitive as well as contain popular organization and leadership, outlawed “spells” and, later, “superstitious practices.” While not often strictly enforced, these laws were at times the basis for attacks on Vodou by the Haitian state, the Catholic Church, and occupying U.S. forces. Beyond such offensives, Ramsey argues that in prohibiting practices considered essential for maintaining relations with the spirits, anti-Vodou laws reinforced the political marginalization, social stigmatization, and economic exploitation of the Haitian majority. At the same time, she examines the ways communities across Haiti evaded, subverted, redirected, and shaped enforcement of the laws. Analyzing the long genealogy of anti-Vodou rhetoric, Ramsey thoroughly dissects claims that the religion has impeded Haiti’s development.

The Spirits and the Law: Vodou and Power in Haiti, by Kate Ramsey

Review “Kate Ramsey tells a fascinating story of antisuperstition legislation in Haiti….a tour de force in the historical anthropology of Haitian vodou and the paradoxes of modernity that it so vividly manifests.”    (Andrew Apter American Ethnologist)“Ramsey’s rich and multilayered book tells a new history of Haiti that reorients how we think politically. Both hard-hitting and revelatory, it teaches us how to understand the law writ large, its plural histories, its effects on everyday life, its ability to absorb and transform and be transformed, to command the public sphere. . . . The continued deformation of Haitian culture, the maligning of vodou—born out of the legality that might seem to deny it—is always political. In calling our attention to the relationship between dead bodies, haunting spirits, and legal authority, Ramsey guarantees a political history that is rigorous and visible—a necessary wakeup call, it is to be hoped, to a mythologized Haiti of zombies, sorcery, and witchdoctors that screens the ongoing economic greed, political guile, and sheer weight of military force.”   (Colin Dayan Law, Culture and the Humanities)“A sophisticated investigation of how Vodou has been treated by the ruling powers of the island since the era of French colonization.”  (Matthew J. Smith Radical History Review)“The Spirits and the Law is a nuanced and thorough reading of a religious system that has been historically misunderstood, demonized, and criminalized. Ramsey effectively shows how Vodou’s treatment both officially and unofficially is part and parcel of a larger battle for power and self-determination from various agents that is waged locally and internationally. In her quest to reveal truths Ramsey leaves no stone unturned. What she cannot include in the main text she includes in the copious notes that could form another text in themselves. Anyone who seeks to truly “build Haiti [back] better” should make this text part of required reading, because no work will succeed in Haiti if those who go in to help refuse to understand that Haiti’s fraught and complex political history is inextricably woven with its spiritual history, a spiritual history that is not a “hindrance to progress,” as some would have us believe, but one to be respected and honored as a system that has supported and sustained Haiti against impossible odds.”  (Toni Pressley-Sanon sx salon)“Anthropological studies of Haitian popular religion are legion, but few of them deal with its history other than to claim for it an important role in the revolution of 1791 to 1804, which ended slavery and made Haiti the Americas’ second independent state. This impressive book provides an ethnologically informed history of Vodou with a particular focus on the politics of law. In four chapters of increasing length, Ramsey deals with the colonial and revolutionary periods, the nineteenth century, the U.S. occupation from 1915 to 1934, and the debates of the following decade surrounding an emergent cultural nationalism. Ramsey’s central problem is to explain why the state only intermittently enforced the laws that criminalized popular ritual practices from colonial times until the 1987 constitution….This richly detailed and sophisticated study, supported by 150 pages of notes, extends the work of [Laënnec] Hurbon and makes an original argument about the interaction of law, culture, and development.” (David Geggus Journal of Interdisciplinary History)“Scholarly interest in the history of Haiti has resurged in recent years, largely focused on the Haitian Revolution. There is, of course, also a plethora of scholarship on Vodou in Haiti. Kate Ramsey’s The Spirits and the Law should not be overlooked as a run-of-the-mill addition to either body of work. Ramsey’s award-winning first book offers a valuable perspective on both the broader history of Haiti and the sociopolitical role of Vodou as she examines the creation and enforcement of laws that restricted ritual practices between the colonial period and the fall of the Duvalier regime.” (Katharine H. Cross Caribbean Studies)“Kate Ramsey’s ground-breaking study of the formative relationship between the popular practices of Vodou in Haiti and its legal repression in various periods re-shapes our understanding of the interplay between state power and cultural resistance, and between spiritual forces (lwa) and legislative codes (loi). In resituating how we might approach the relation of religion to modernity, she teaches us how the socalled ‘primitive’ beliefs and ‘atavistic’ practices actually emerge out of the ongoing negotiation of power with modernizing states, and in close relation to the legal codes that govern and regulate everyday life. Based on extensive and thorough research (both archival and interviews) encompassing more than a century and a half, this work has the potential to generate transformative understandings of Haitian history, and more widely of Caribbean critical legal studies, Afro-Caribbean religious history, post-emancipation political history and international relations, the philosophy of law, and the study of power and citizenship. Its lessons are also crucial to provoking more thoughtful discussions about the situation of Haiti today.” (Mimi Sheller Slavery and Abolition)“Kate Ramsey is a gifted, sophisticated, passionate, and objective student of Haitian life and history. In The Spirits and the Law she has left no stone unturned. She sees Vodou as a modern invention of the Haitian genius, and the book is a platform for analyzing all the big issues—from imperialism, to slavery, neocolonialism, and US exceptionalism expressed as racial paternalism—that have made Haiti what it has become. This is a very big book.” (Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee)“In The Spirits and the Law Kate Ramsey explores the links between the construction of Vodou as malicious magic or a progress-impeding force and the penalizing of superstitious practices by the Haitian state. This brilliantly argued and exhaustively researched study examines questions of prohibition and denial that are omitted by other works on Haitian popular religion. It is as much a formidable feat of scholarship as a much needed argument against seeing Vodou as responsible for Haiti’s underdevelopment.” (J. Michael Dash, New York University)“In this compelling study of anti-superstition legislation in Haiti, Kate Ramsey culls a remarkable set of materials to bring to bear on the topic, ranging from colonial travel accounts, memoirs, State Department records, and U.N. sorcery reports. The richness of her account is a testament to indefatigable research, and she develops fresh insights into the related literature as well. This fascinating book adds much to our knowledge of modern Haiti as well as religion and cultural politics in Latin America and the Caribbean in general.” (Robin Derby, University of California, Los Angeles)“A tour de force of research and interpretation, this book offers a spellbinding history of the relationship between popular spiritual practice and the rule of law in Haiti. With fine-grained detail and theoretical sophistication, Kate Ramsey shows law to be a fickle spirit—a powerful but capricious force, having the capacity to lie dormant for long periods and then form suddenly into a dangerous weapon of church, state, and imperial oppression, while remaining susceptible to popular efforts to harness legal powers for beneficial ends. Can great scholarship work like medicinal magic? If, as Ramsey argues, popular religion is a vital resource sustaining Haiti’s people, then perhaps The Spirits and the Law can cure the toxic pathologies afflicting so much of the ill-informed commentary on Vodou’s role in Haitian life.” (Vincent Brown, Duke University)

About the Author Kate Ramsey is associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Miami.

By Angry in Philly This is one of those rare books that is destined to be a crossover hit -- an academic study at once profoundly rigorous and so very well-written, with a passion and lyricism that's hard to find in popular OR academic non-fiction these days, that will draw you into a fascinating culture from page one, and entangle you in the lives of the characters who people this book with the same intensity one imagines its author must have lent to this stunning feat of research. The writing and reporting are good enough that -- like a book on the oyster or the potato that becomes a best-seller, only more so due to the intrinsic importance of its topic -- it doesn't matter whether you thought you cared about Haiti enough to buy this book. Get a few pages in and you will. Ramsey's gifts as a writer make a sometimes painful journey at the same time a literary delight. Can't remember the last time I've felt this way about a book.

As a scholar who is looking at Haitian life and institutions from outside, but who who does so with serious respect, she has illuminated relationships between deeply rooted religious beliefs and social orders and arrangements. This book is a must-read not only for scholars but for any journalist expecting to report on Haiti and for anyone traveling there -tourist, entrepreneur or aid provider, perhaps especially the latter.

An Instant Classic: Combines the best elements of the different branches of scholarship on Vodou By ElCafetero Most studies of Vodou focus on either its ritual content, the way it has been denigrated by individuals within and outside of Haiti, or its folklorization. This book shows how all of these elements have interacted throughout the course of Haitian history to shape Haitian politics, the lives of religious practitioners, and the views of Haiti by outsiders. It also serves as a great legal history. If you read only one book about Haiti(an Vodou), I would recommend this instant classic.

Special Forces are highly revered and the soldiers themselves that are in these elite units have gone through a tough selection and training regime to make it onto the front line. Be it a Delta Force Operative, Navy SEAL, SAS Trooper or any other Special Forces operator. Today, close collaboration is the key to many missions - even if the rivalry, to be the best, first to complete an objective or be the ones to take on a high profile target such as Osama bin Laden drives some operations. The stories in this book are chosen to show not only the success, but also the failure and lessons learnt from each and every operation. High technology is still no replacement for boots on the ground, where highly trained operatives can still gather intelligence that no eye in the sky is capable of. Special Forces looks back at some of the key operations undertaken over the past 43 years.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good By Adidas Loyalty Very interesting book. I like the variation with the different special forces like Delta Force, SEALS, SAS, Rangers and SBS.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Meh By John The author's grammar was extremely poor and detracted from the book in many places. Numerous misspelled and improperly used words, missing words, incorrect or lacking punctuation, and instances of awkward sentence structure made this book difficult to understand in places. The stories themselves were ok. A lot of the stories were very familiar to me and in some instances the book's version differs from other versions that are generally accepted to be more accurate.Overall I would not recommend this book to a friend or acquaintance. I finished the book, though before I reached the halfway point I was already anxious for it to be over so I could move on to another book. I haven't read a book I disliked in a very long time but this one seriously made me debate giving a one star rating and I'm still second guessing my two star decision as I type.

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Battle of the Atlantic, written and read by Jonathan Dimbleby.

The Battle of the Atlantic was - though often overlooked - crucial to victory in the Second World War. If the German U-boats had prevailed, the maritime artery across the Atlantic would have been severed. Mass hunger would have consumed Britain, and the Allied armies would have been prevented from joining in the invasion of Europe. There would have been no D-Day.

Through fascinating contemporary diaries and letters from the leaders and from the sailors on all sides, Jonathan Dimbleby creates a thrilling narrative that uniquely places the campaign in the context of the entire Second World War.

Challenging conventional wisdom on the use of intelligence and on Churchill's bombing campaign, The Battle of the Atlantic tells the epic story of the decisions that led to victory and the horror and humanity of life on those perilous seas.

Good book for fair-to-middlin' players By Mark Bell I like this book.It has hymns arranged in playable keys for guitar (none of those gol-durned 'golf clubs' in the key signature). You get the hymns with music and chords. One thing that I like is that most of the hymns have older, more original words than the hymnal that we use at church (Hymns For The Family Of God), and usually all of the verses. The selection of hymns is good.

Overall, it is just okay. The song selection is very good. The arrangements are mediocre at best; but they allow for easy simplification or embellishment (depending on skill levels). The skill level required varies so that players of most any level will find something they can play with a little effort. My biggest issue is that the TAB is mostly illegible, at least in the copy that I received. The fret numbers in the TAB are so small and jammed together that it is impossible to read most of it.My suggestion is to re-transcribe the songs you want to work on using a computer so that you can print out TAB that can be read easily. The chords are the most difficult to read; but you can make them out well enough to figure out the chord voicing/fingering (very slowly...) and then write it out so you can read it easily. The chords are mostly open chords using the most common voicings.

By russscript I was disappointed to find that this is not a finger style guitar book; since the description includes TAB and notation, I assumed these would be arranged hymns for the classical or finger-style guitarist. instead, the hymns consist of:Lead and one part harmony vocal lines ,Chords, and the the chords written out in TAB and notation in a simple strumming pattern with a few very basic fills and bass linesIf you have problems with strumming from a chord chart and would like every individual strum notated in very cramped TAB and notationthan this book is for you. the strumming is very simple and I would say any player with a little imagination could come up with a style as good or better than the patterns provided.on the good side, the book contains a nice large selection of common hymns with ALL the verses, and the two part vocal lines are nice for singing with a partner.so, a good "fake" style hymn book, just don't expect much use for the TAB and notation.

Vaughn is "must reading", along with Lieutenant John G. Bourke's "On the Border With Crook". Both works focus on the June 17, 1876 clash of General George Crook's 1,000+ troops and Crow and Shoshone Indian allies with hundreds of Sioux in the lovely Valley of the Rosebud, about 40 miles south from where General Custer would meet his fate at the Little Big Horn about a week later. Crook's stalemate (at first, he claimed victory) in the face of bold opposition took his force out of the overall strategic three-pronged campaign against the people of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse and sent it limping back southward, rendering him unable to come to Custer's assistance eight days later when these very same "hostiles" overwhelmed and whipped the vaunted Seventh Cavalry. Custer, General Terry, et. al. knew nothing about Crook's debacle, or the unexpected enthusiastic and vigorous fighting spirit of the Sioux.A more recent book which homes in on this fight, and which is especially well-researched, is "Battle of the Rosebud: Prelude to the Little Bighorn" by Neil Magnum (1987), former chief historian at the Custer Battlefield National Monument (that is what it was officially called when he was there -- it was renamed in the early 1990s) and editor of the Custer Battlefield Historical & Museum Association's periodical publication, "Greasy Grass".

An overlooked battle of the Indian Wars By Dick Marti Largely because of Custer's fame and the aura surrounding the Battle of the Little Bighorn, accounts of that battle appear approximately yearly and have begun to resemble one another closely. This book, "With Crook on the Rosebud" by J. W. Vaughn is a detailed account of the Battle of the Rosebud, which took place 17 June 1876 about 30 miles southeast of the Custer battle site. Vaughn actually went over the battlefield personally several times to identify features in the 1950s. He used a metal detector to find spent cartridges, bullets, and a few unspent shells. He also talked to old-timers who provided information on people and places. Some of this information was used to locate soldier positions. According to the very brief officer reports filed after the battle, only 10 soldiers were killed in this fight, which seems rather amazing considering the numbers of soldiers and Indians involved and the fact that the battle lasted several hours. Indian casualties were unknown, but 13 bodies were left on the field. One wounded Indian was buried in a teepee on Custer's route to the Little Bighorn and was discovered by Custer's troops. Because Crook's men were low on ammunition and rations, they left the field the day after the battle and returned to Fort Fetterman. The battle was at best a draw. This book is better written and more detailed than the later volume by Manghum. It appears that the definitive volume on the Battle of the Rosebud has not yet been written, given all the interest in the Little Bighorn fight.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Footnote in History By Randy Keehn I just finished "With Crook at the Rosebud" and I was impressed with the thoroughness of the book. It is the first account I've come across of what essentially was the first battle of the campaign that led to Custer's Last Stand. The prelude to and account of the battle are rather detailed and are embellished with ample first-person accounts. Indeed, author J.W. Vaughn may have been too loyal to the first-person accounts. Vaughn tells a good story; better than the eye-witnesses he quotes at length. I found myself reading what, for me, may have been too much detail and missing some of the overview because of it. In all fairness, chapter 6 is Vaughn's own account of the battle. Having pointed out the three theaters of battle, he then focusses the next three chapters on each theater and immerses us in the detailed first-person accounts. Had I had a better overall knowledge of the battle at the Rosebud, I probably would have enjoyed the minutia all the more. Instead, I found myself putting the book down frequently and taking longer to read it than it should have taken me. The book moves well when Vaughn does the talking and I appreciated his enthusiasm as he explored the battle sites. "With Crook atthe Rosebud" was published in 1956 and Vaughn talked about his trips to the area earlier in that decade. There was, apparently, no efforts to preserve it as an historic site. The author relied on the help of local ranchers and Native Americans (the battle site borders on the Crow Reservation). I'm not sure modern archaeologists would approve of his collecting gun shells and exploring with a metal detector but at least he wrote down where he found what he found. The question that Vaughn concludes with was that of the relative success of Crook's encounter with the hostile Indians (Crow and Shoshone warriors fought alongside the soldiers). Apparently, the relatively minor losses of Crooks assembled army was measured against the subsequent massacre of Custer and the heavy losses on the rest of the 7th Cavalry. Some detractors of Crook's felt that a stronger pursuit of the hostiles could have prevented the demise of Custer and his men. After the day's engagement, the troops licked their wounds and eventually headed back to their home base. Was Crook a coward or a surviving pragmatist? His assessment that he lacked the numbers to pursue the enemy is in stark contrast to Custer bold attack on the entire village some days later. History records Custer as a hero although revisionists have a different opinion. Had Crook been as emboldened as Custer, History would probably be remembering him as a martyred hero (along with his troops). Vaughn covers that in the last chapter which I though was the chapter that could have been expanded. This book is an essential for students of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Indeed, it is one of the 5 or 6 books in the "Custer Library". It is full of footnotes in the back, and appendices of all the Army combatants and all the official reports of the battle. I thought it interesting that my copy is a first edition marked "property of the Army". This battle, after all, may have been a real teaching moment.

Addison goes into some deep history of the Templars and the Times they lived in right up to the supression of the order. He also sets up a basis for the fact that the Templars did not all 'go away' after thier supression but lived on in countries where Phillip and Pope Clement V could not touch them. This book is great to start on your journey to find the truth about this order of Knights.

The publisher, however, should be embarrassed at the typos, third grade grammar and syntax in the introduction. Makes the bookseem like one published by some wierd fringe group.

46 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Tedious By Harold Goodholm I am a History buff, and am interested in learning more about little known subjects, such as the Templars, and can enjoy reading any history provided the author can generate reader interest in his subject matter, which Mr. Addison has failed to do for me. The profusion of Latin words & phrases without any attempt at translation deprives the reader of the subjects substance. The subject matter is, or can be, fascinating, however the stultifying and the excessive use of foreign phrases detracts from the narrative. Also, a book of history should include an Index, & a biblioghaphy. This book does not include either!

61 Highways Revisited: The Albums of Bob Dylan, by Bob Shiel

About the Author Bob Shiel got on the Dylan train a little late in the game in 1970 and, in line with Dylan's counsel, has not looked back...well, not until writing 61 Highways Revisited. Chicago songwriter, recording artist, educator, writer, devoted reader, old-timer athlete, kindergarten yoga practitioner, advanced certified yoga instructor, and certainly quite the Dylan fan, upon retiring from 27 years as a community college English teacher, Shiel set out to tackle the monster topic of the albums of Bob Dylan in a manner that would mirror a Bob Dylan song. Daunting, no doubt. Yet, clearly intellectual candy yearning to burst forth. Shiel's next book, in between recording an audio book of his Dylan retrospective, aims to tell a few autobiographical stories from the heart, dropping a few pearls of tidbits along the way. All while continuing to write, record, and release new musical material suiting his fancy. Contact at bobshiel@hotmail.com to conspire with Bob Shiel around an entertaining, educational event on Dylan's albums, whatever, etc. Road trips welcome.

I didn't read the chapters in order, just in the order I wanted to read them, which didn't take anything away from the experience. His takes on "Self Portrait" and the three eighties albums he thought were not up to par seemed to validate what others have been saying.

By KERNZ I used to go into a Greenwich Village record store called SUBTERRANEAN RECORDS, frequently. they had an astonishing inventory of boot-leg CDs and vinyl. Stuff you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. They had Dylan riches, a browser's paradise, and the place was trulysubterranean. That was no mere Dylan tie-in, it was a cave! Dangerously steep concrete steps below the busy traffic of Cornelia street and intochurch. I used to get into meandering Dylan conversations with KENNY, the young fellow manning the place most nights. Kenny was hardcorerock and roll, as any true Dylan aficionado should be, no SMITHS, no YES, no JOANIE MITCHELL....no crap. He related to me a tale I foundknee-bending hilarious, saying he once forced some guy off the premises for mentioning THE HOLLIES one too many times. I asked him oncewhen discussing Dylan nuts, if he didn't think we, or at least I, wouldn't fit all too comfortably in that category. "Oh no way", he said. "These guyswant me to throw everything out but Dylan and make it a Temple.Mr. Shiel's book; 61 HIGHWAYS REVISITED has the grit, the authenticity and the shock of truth plainly told of SUBTERRANEAN RECORDSwith Kenny sitting in. SHIEL has the open hearted love of Brother BOB that it takes after the veritible mountain of biographical texts whichhave accumulated since ANTHONY SCADUTO kicked it all off back in the stone age. Innocent honest love and respect with profound psychologicalinsight mixed with cold iron sledge hammer criticism when called for allows SHIEL while going over familiar detail to come up with an impossiblyfresh book. 61 albums, he covers each one and highlights the recent 25 years which have been towering testament to the monsterous unfathomableness of Dylan's genius. Bravo Mr. Shiel.

Great fun and a great read. I have 30 of Dylan's albums and this book has made want to pick up a few more (Tell Tale Signs...I'm looking in its direction).>> I enjoyed how the author shared some of his personal history when reviewing the albums (where he was living when they came out, what his life was like, etc). All of us Dylan fans share a personal connection to these albums.I highly recommend this book. It's full of information and it's funny as heck.>

By Jessica Adkins-Charles I'm a big fan of Sharon's and her books were some of the first military romances that I had ever read. Once I read one of her books, I become addicted to military romances. Sharon Hamilton had opened this big world up to me that I hadn't know anything about.Needless to say, I read one military romance after another after I discovered this genre and it's one reason why I love what Sharon has done with this book. Taking the first chapter from some of her greatest books, Sharon teases readers and leaves them craving for more. Some of these books, like Band of Bachelors: Lucas, for example, I had never read before and once I had read one chapter I needed to one-click.For anyone who has not read a Sharon Hamilton book before or a military romance, the Seal Brotherhood Shorts is perfect for you! Even if you have never picked up one or the other before, by the time you read a few of these, you'll be one-clicking away and fully immersed in the world of SEALs!

Best Ebook The Myth of American Religious Freedom, Updated Edition, by David Sehat

In the battles over religion and politics in America, both liberals and conservatives often appeal to history. But in The Myth of American Religious Freedom, historian David Sehat provides an eye-opening history of religion in public life that overturns our most cherished myths. Originally, he shows, the First Amendment applied only to the federal government, which had limited authority. On the state level, a Protestant moral establishment ruled over Catholics, Jews, Mormons, agnostics, and others. Not until 1940 did the Supreme Court extend the First Amendment to the states. As the Court began to dismantle the connections between religion and government, religious conservatives mobilized to maintain their power and began the culture wars of the last fifty years. To trace the rise and fall of this Protestant establishment, Sehat focuses on a series of dissenters-abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, progressive pundit Walter Lippmann, and many others. Shattering myths held by both the left and the right, this book forces us to rethink some of our most deeply held political beliefs.

The Myth of American Religious Freedom, Updated Edition, by David Sehat

From Publishers Weekly In this new and compelling examination of American religious history, Sehat argues that this country did not extend freedom of religion to all, but until recently was controlled by a Protestant Christian establishment that sought to impose its will in coercive and often exclusionary ways. An assistant professor of history at Georgia State University, Sehat shows how state and federal courts sided with the Protestant moral establishment in battles with Roman Catholics over public schools, with Mormons over polygamy, and with freethinkers over the right to be irreligious. This argument might surprise 21st-century Americans convinced their country has always been a beacon of religious liberty, but it is precisely this flaw in the national religious image that Sehat attempts to illuminate, if not always concisely. His argument is timely in light of the controversy over a proposed Islamic center near ground zero in New York City. It is also an important corrective to the ongoing culture wars between the religious right, which claims this country was birthed on a Christian foundation, and secularists, who insist that the First Amendment spells out a separation of church and state. Review From the previous edition: "The Myth of American Religious Freedom is a clear, well-argued, carefully researched book that serves as a model of the ways in which excellent and thorough scholarship can also be relevant to contemporary American life.... Wonderful, important, and refreshingly iconoclastic." --Church History

"Sehat has written a wonderful intellectual history of the United States addressing a topic of perpetual concern to Americans since the founding." --American Historical Review

"This is a compelling history and is engagingly told... This excellent book advances an interesting twist on the traditional legal interpretations of the free exercise clause and makes a compelling case for a careful reexamination of our assumptions regarding its history.... More than any other book I have read over the last six months, I find myself continuously referencing this analysis." --Law and Politics Book Review

"This is a smart and sophisticated book. It should be widely, and carefully, read." --Journal of Church and State

"Sobering and persuasive." --The Christian Century

"David Sehat boldly slices through all of American history." --The Journal of American History

"[Sehat] makes his case convincingly...A knowledge of Sehat's argument would elevate the substance of contemporary political debates about the separation of church and state, about religious tests for political office, and about finding common moral ground."--Southern Humanities Review

"A short review cannot do justice to David Sehat's complex book...a detailed history of federal and state policies affecting religion...persuasive." --The Journal of Southern History

"Sehat provides food for thought...he unmasks and attacks the moral establishments across American history." --Kirkus

"New and compelling... timely... an important corrective to the ongoing culture wars between the religious right, which claims this country was birthed on a Christian foundation, and secularists, who insist that the First Amendment spells out a separation of church and state." --Publishers Weekly

"The Myth of American Religious Freedom is a clear, well-srgued, carefully researched book that serves as a model of the ways in which excellent and thorough scholarship can also be relevant to contemporary American life... a wonderful, important, and refreshingly iconoclastic book..." --Matthew Avery Sutton, Washington State University

"This vigorously argued, carefully documented book traces the coercive function of religiously derived moral norms throughout the history of American law and politics. Sehat gives little comfort to today's advocates of a greater role for religion in public life, but he also calls into question the historical foundation of most defenses of a sharp church-state separation. This smart, provocative book invites a wide and attentive readership." --David A. Hollinger, President, Organization of American Historians, 2010-2011

"David Sehat is a myth-demolishing historian in the mold of C. Vann Woodward and Edmund Morgan. Just as they destroyed myths about liberty, slavery, and segregation, Sehat now devastates the idea that the United States was born, reared, and raised in religious freedom. He shows that, instead, control and power have long dominated American religious history. This is a rich and sad saga that delves brilliantly into law, politics, and reform. Deeply researched and passionately argued, The Myth of American Religious Freedom transforms how we think about religion and the United States." --Edward J. Blum, author of Reforging the White Republic: Race, Religion, and American Nationalism, 1865-1898

About the Author David Sehat is Associate Professor of History at Georgia State University. He is also the author of The Jefferson Rule: How the Founding Fathers Became Infallible and Our Politics Inflexible.

Interesting argument, challenging read By iHappy As I understand the author's argument, there have been two dominant trends in America's relationship with religion. One is based on the idea that America is a Christian nation, and religion and politics work together for the common good. The other is the idea that the United States is based on separation of religion and politics. These two trends have been in conflict from the beginning (from before the beginning even), and the struggle between their adherents has shaped important developments in American history. The author frames that history as a debate between those who promote the "moral establishment" as necessary for fulfillment of American ideals, and those whose full participation in American political life is threatened by the establishment. It's an interesting argument, well documented and thoroughly explained, and intuitive in our own time--which, of course, is the whole point, or ought to be. The argument is compelling, and the author's own background as an ex-evangelical gives him a unique perspective, one that informs the thinking throughout the book. If you like stimulating thought, and having your assumptions challenged, then reinforced, and then challenged again, you will profit from this book. One minor criticism: I found the writing at times a bit dull. Sentences are routinely long, with multiple modifiers, and explanatory clauses tacked on to the introductory phrases instead of separated into shorter sentences. There are flashes of really good writing, but many people, especially college students, will be looking to the end of the chapter to see how many pages they have left. They may even be tempted to skip a few. That would be too bad. Good books deserve good readers, and while I wish the writing were a bit more engaging, this is a good book. I look forward to more from this author.

A must read By emerson This book challenges long-cherished notions by both the right and the left, so it is no surprise that both the right and the left feel threatened by its central message. The argument is deceptively simple--America has always had a Protestant Christian establishment which has worked to repress other faiths. At no point does Sehat deny that we have an intellectual tradition that privileges religious freedom (Jefferson and Madison made sure of that), but he places this within its proper legal and political context. Religious establishments tend to fend off rivals by means both subtle and forceful, and Sehat labors to reveal them all. Those who enjoy reading and thinking will enjoy this book. It is not for the small minded, but neither is it impenetrable. It is instead alive with ideas which are not dressed up in academic jargon, but are rather expressed clearly and forcefully. One final note. This book makes a persuasive argument, but it is not one with which I agree. One of this book's most rewarding features is that it invites people to engage. I recommend it to anyone who likes not just to read about history, but to think about its meaning.

Where Dr. Zinn tries to tell the history of the United States from, as he puts it, the perspective of its victims, Dr. Sehat tries to tell it from the perspective of its dissenters. In both cases the result is not the history that most of us grew up with, the history that the government of most any nation tends to tell of itself, as Zinn has it, like that of a family, "a giant web of nationhood pretending to a common interest", a history that obscures, ignores, or even denies fierce disagreements and conflicts of interest. The reason both authors take this approach is not to condemn the government, or romanticize the virtues of the victims, in Zinn's, case, or the dissenters in Sehats, but to advance the dialogue on who we want to be as a people and why, based on a broader and more accurate grasp of who we have actually been, and why. In Dr. Sehat's case, the polarization of views on the nature and role of religion in American politics over that last 50 or so years is, for the most part, because the debate on both sides has suffered from the perpetuation of three distinct but related myths. The first is the liberal myth of church-state separation. The First Amendment, he says, was itself a bitter compromise that did not create the separation advocated by Madison and Jefferson. The second myth follows from the first, that religious believers fled the persecution in Europe in order to establish religious tolerance in the United States.Quite the contrary had been the case. If anything, the early settlers came here to establish their own theocracy, and much of the book thoroughly documents the development of what the author calls the moral establishment, meaning the close, cooperative, and coordinated relationship between Protestant Christianity and the State toward the regulation and control of public and private behavior. This was not done by persuasive means, but by force of law, beginning, notably, with the legal prohibition of blasphemy. It was argued then that blasphemy undercut religion, and religion, in the view of virtually all the Founders, was critical for the support of morality. Though the First Amendment prohibited the establishment of an official religion of the State, the moral aspects of the gospel were regarded as so important to the preservation of the State that legal enforcement of the moral code of Protestant Christianity became commonplace throughout much of U.S. history. This leads to the demolition of the third myth enjoyed largely by religious conservatives, that American religious liberty is and always has been the cornerstone of American liberty. On the contrary. In many ways, the United States was a de facto Christian nation because Protestant Christians had significant control over law and governance and used it to enforce their morality. This reality also undermines a related and more implied myth of conservatives, that the United States was for the most part religiously homogeneous. If that were true, as Dr. Sehat points out, the force of law would not have been necessary. But the other critical point that Dr. Sehat makes concerns the kind of morality that this moral establishment enforced. The churches overwhelmingly supported slavery and the development of Jim Crow that followed it. They systematically engaged the legal system to deny religious freedom to all but Protestant Christians. They overwhelmingly opposed women’s suffrage, and they overwhelmingly aligned themselves with and theologically rationalized the worst abuses of corporate capitalism during the mid 19th and early 20th Centuries. And though Dr. Sehat does not mention this, he might have added that they supported and engaged in the massacre and displacement of Native Americans. Both sides of this enduring struggle over the meaning and role of religion and the First Amendment tend to at least downplay, if not to ignore or outright deny this history of religious coercion in American politics. Dr. Sehat insists that the reality of this history must be faced if we are to move forward toward the promise of religious freedom for all Americans. Dr. Sehat expresses that promise as the capacity to adjudicate between the diverse constituencies and competing ethical claims of our religiously plural culture, and find a moral framework that is acceptable in law. What I take that to mean is that the measure of our commitment to religious freedom consists in the extent to which we protect the rights of minorities, including those who claim no religious convictions or affiliations, and that the role of religion should be, for the most part, persuasive, and not coercive. This is how I understand Dr. Sehat’s reference to Michael Walzers “moral minimalism” over the “moral maximalism” of our history.
