The most despised monarch in Britain's historical memory The tragedy of Charles I dominates one of the most strange and painful periods in British history as the whole island tore itself apart over a deadly, entangled series of religious and political disputes. In Mark Kishlansky's brilliant account it is never in doubt that Charles created his own catastrophe, but he was nonetheless opposed by men with far fewer scruples and less consistency who for often quite contradictory reasons conspired to destroy him. This is a remarkable portrait of one of the most talented, thoughtful, loyal, moral, artistically alert, and yet, somehow, disastrous of all of England's rulers.

A King who believed in the divine right of kings By Sussman Thomas Penn and a number of his colleagues have embarked on a venture to publish a short series of profiles of England's and eventually Britain's Monarchs. The aim being that the reader will think afresh about the Monarchs - their place in history and the continued significance of this national institution.Charles I in his own words: "Princes are not bound to give account of their actions," he wrote, "but to God alone"This abridged narrative on the life of Charles I, which is authored by Mark Kishlansky. He is a subscriber to the revisionist interpretation of early Stuart history. He advanced his analysis in a commentary in The Journal of Modern History (1977), and in a further two books, The Rise of the New Model Army (1979) and Parliamentary Selection (1986). Kishlansky is a fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Royal Historical Society. He teaches courses on English social history, the Stuart Age, the English Revolution, and the Reign of Charles I.Charles I became heir to the throne on the death of his brother, Prince Henry, in 1612. He succeeded, as the second Stuart King of England, in 1625. Throughout his reign it was dogged by controversy and disputes. As a person he was reserved (he had a stammer), he was self-righteous and had a high notion of royal authority, trusting in the divine right of kings. He was a good polyglot and a complex man of cultured tastes. A large fiscal debt had arisen in the reigns of Elizabeth I and James and the consequences of his financial `abilities' to raise funds for various endeavours lead to unpopular use of old statutes. During the course of Charles's reign, the question of how far the English Reformation should advance was relentlessly brought to the forefront of political examination. The Irish Rebellion of 1641 was precursor to the English Civil War - and in part was caused by the suspicion that the rebels' had a suspected association with Charles I.This abbreviated life of Charles I, is a satisfactory edition and good primer. On a subject that could run to many volumes, written in a clear and concise manner, which is probably aimed at the younger reader - but not exclusively so. It's a small hardback book with 100 plus pages of main text in small font sized print. The cover dust jacket covers the centre half of the book, which makes it, look rather fetching. It has a number of lavish colour plates at centre of the book, it's attractively bound and paper is of good quality. There is a useful section of notes as well as guide for further reading. This edition is the first of 5 initial books to be published this Dec 2014, and this is part of a series of narratives under the collective banner of `Penguin Monarchs'..

Review

“A book brimming with insight.” ―The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“[Merkin] deftly blends wit, charm, and erudition in a provocative collection of observations.” ―O, The Oprah Magazine

“Precise, pointed. . . . Together, these essays . . . showcase a fearless intelligence. . . . Merkin addresses more complicated issues, or at least ones calling for either honest self-examination or subtlety. . . . These are stunning works, enough to hold us for at least another decade.” ―Clea Simon, The Boston Globe

“Unfailingly intelligent.” ―Heller McAlprin, NPR

“[Merkin] writes like an angel, whatever the subject.” ―Editor's Choice, Buffalo News

“Outstanding . . . one of our best narrative nonfiction writers. Merkin's voice is secular and modern and yet filled with some sort of ancient wisdom, and coupled with intellectual and emotional honesty, while maintaining a pureness of heart. That is no easy feat.” ―Elaine Margolin, Jewish Journal

“A diverse array of work . . . The keenly perceptive Merkin adroitly tackles high and low culture . . . refreshingly candid . . . . No matter what topic, readers will be treated to mesmerizing prose, lively wit, and penetrating analysis; the collection is a joy to read.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred, boxed review)

“An eclectic collection of pieces, all of which feature her unique style and voice . . . . Merkin's style is inevitably exploratory--these are ‘essays' in the word's literal sense. Like Montaigne, she writes to figure something out, not because she's already figured it out . . . Essays that go down like candy but nourish like health food.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Fearless, impolitic, honest, darkly observant, these superb essays tell all of our secrets.” ―Katie Roiphe

“Daphne Merkin is one of the smartest and best readers I know--not only of books (about which she writes peerlessly) but of people and their preoccupations. She is fiercely honest, even when she turns her unflinching eye on herself, and has such range and such an uncanny ability to draw connections that her essays leave you enlightened about things you never knew you cared about.” ―Chip McGrath

“Daphne Merkin's voice is unmistakable in its wit and audacity and undertone of melancholy. The essay form is a perfect medium for her delicious arias.” ―Janet Malcolm

“Daphne Merkin puts the mark of her distinctive style--intellectual and literary--on everything she writes about, from Kabbalah to camp. This is the juiciest collection of cultural criticism to come along in quite a while and establishes her as a unique and major essayist.” ―Phyllis Rose

“The Fame Lunches is nothing short of a great read. It's filled with unexpected insights into the Complexity, Sorrow, and Beauty of my favorite subject: Women. Everything Daphne Merkin touches glows in the light of her shining talent.” ―Diane Keaton

“Daphne Merkin's sparkling and unreasonably informed essays are about fame, yes, and lunches, somewhat. Above all, they are strikingly original takes on the human condition.” ―Woody Allen

“The Fame Lunches is a delicious and delightful feast. What a pleasure to read a writer who can use language with joy and inventiveness. Daphne Merkin has taken the essay form back to its roots in Michel Montaigne, Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, and Samuel Johnson. Her range is vast, her intellect inspiring. Whether you agree with her conclusions or not, watching her mind work is a thing of beauty.” ―Erica Jong, author of Seducing the Demon: Writing for My Life

“Everything Daphne Merkin writes is so smart, it shines.” ―The Washington Post Book World on Daphne Merkin

“One of the few contemporary essayists who have (and deserve) a following.” ―New York Magazine on Daphne Merkin

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. it is nice to have them By Lucubrator It's been a long time since her last collection. While I've read a number of the essays gathered in this book in several magazines, it is nice to have them, and the ones that got away, in a beautiful hardbound collection. Personally, I love Ms. Merkin's voice--incisive, intelligent, empathetic, self-scrutinizing, and gently mocking. Her range of literary, historical, and psychological knowledge is wide and subtlety conveyed. I find reading her pieces like being in the company of smart, funny, and generous friend. Really enjoyed her profiles of Alice Munro and Diane Keaton, as well as her unflinching and honest takes on money and fame.

16 of 20 people found the following review helpful. She's the queen of oversharing --- and that's good news for her readers. By Jesse Kornbluth Daphne Merkin is frighteningly intelligent. You only have to read a few paragraphs of her writing to know that she’s read, heard and seen everything written, recorded and filmed, and that, for good measure, she has a point of view about her subject that is dramatically different from every other writer. But Daphne Merkin is not only deeply smart, she is deeply troubled. She’s the queen of Too Much Information, though in her case the oversharing is the point. She was, she tells us, born into a family of casually Orthodox Jews. They Merkins were rich — they lived in a Park Avenue duplex, they had a house staff — but money somehow didn’t seem plentiful. Her father was successful and distant. She could never get close to her mother; young Daphne had a “sense of not having been loved — or, to put it more precisely, responded to in a way that felt like love.” At 5, she began “to be apprehensive about what lay in wait for me.” At 8, she was “wholly unwilling to attend school, out of some combination of fear and separation anxiety.”But she could write. Lord, could she write. When she was 21, she reviewed a book by Jane Bowles. Woody Allen wrote her a fan letter: “You’re wasting your gifts on reviewing.” They became friends. Many years later, over lunch, she told him she felt more depressed than usual. With that, as she writes in this collection of pieces, the interrogation began:"How depressed? he immediately wanted to know. Quite depressed, I said. Did I have trouble getting up in the morning? Lots, I answered. Did I ever stay in bed all day? No, I said, but it was often noon before I got out of my nightgown. But of course I continued to write, he said. I answered that I hadn’t written a word in weeks. He looked quite serious and then gently asked me if I had ever thought about trying shock therapy. Shock therapy? Yes, he said, he knew a friend — a famous friend — for whom it had been quite helpful. Maybe I should try it.Sure, I said. Thanks. I don’t know what I had been hoping for — some version of come with me and I will cuddle you until your sadness goes away, not go get yourself hooked up to electrodes, baby — but I was slightly stunned. More than slightly. I understood that he was trying to be helpful in his way, but it fell so far short. We shook hands on Madison Avenue and then gave each other a polite peck, as we always did. It was sunny and cool as I made my way home, looking in at the windows full of bright summer dresses. Shock therapy? It wasn’t as though I hadn’t heard of it or didn’t know people who had benefited from it. Still, how on earth did he conceive of me? As a chronic mental patient, someone who was meant to sit on a thin hospital mattress and stare grayly into space? Didn’t he know I was a writer with a future, a person given to creative descriptions of her own moods? Shock therapy, indeed; I’d sooner try a spa.It suddenly occurred to me, as I walked up Madison Avenue, that it might pay to be resilient, if this was all being vulnerable and skinless got you. People didn’t stop and cluck over the damage done unless you made it worth their while. Indeed, maybe it was time to rethink this whole salvation business. Or maybe I was less desperate, less teetering on the edge, than I cared to admit. Now, that was a refreshing possibility."Now that I’ve suggested the psychological terrain — and these are just the top notes, expressed as vulgar journalism — what about “The Fame Lunches: On Wounded Icons, Money, Sex, the Brontës, and the Importance of Handbags,” Daphne Merkin’s new collection of essays? There are 45 of them, and the topics are, as they say, wide-ranging.Merkin is extremely conscious of surface appearance, especially her weight, so there’s an essay called “In My Head I’m Always Thin.” “Our Money, Ourselves” tracks her family’s public philanthropy and private tightness: “At some point I took to muttering darkly to my mother that charity began at home, but she would always fix me with a contemptuous look and ask, ‘And what exactly is it that you lack?’ She managed to make me feel ungrateful and grabby at once.”There are meditations on stars, most of them damaged icons ripe for her healing analysis — Marilyn, Michael, Truman, Courtney. Her take on Princess Diana’s marriage will suggest the tone: “I find myself wondering how Diana’s life might have turned out if she and Charles had bonded over their shared lack of childhood, their virtual abandonment as children. …What would have happened if they had the patience (on his side) and endurance (on hers) to address their mutual longings for love and nurturance in each other?”There are book reviews, many of them learned, some of them esoteric. Zingers appear — on John Updike: “He began to seem like a man who always wore a hat to work.” — but the general reader may feel lost. No problem. This isn’t a book you read cover-to-cover in an evening. It’s a book you dip into, reading what you like, skipping what doesn’t appeal.Tina Brown told Daphne Merkin, “The art of self-exposure is not simply catharsis.” True, especially for Daphne Merkin. I know her just well enough to believe she found only modest catharsis in writing these pieces. She’s after something bigger, smarter, grander. And in her endless distress, she often finds it.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A great collection By 20thCenturyLtd Merkin has perfect pitch as an observer. A great collection, in the spirit of Mary MCarthy, Dorothy Parker, and Janet Flanner.

Founded in a working-class neighborhood in southeast Houston in 1941, Gold Star/SugarHill Recording Studios is a major independent studio that has produced a multitude of influential hit records in an astonishingly diverse range of genres. Its roster of recorded musicians includes Lightnin' Hopkins, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Parker, Clifton Chenier, Sir Douglas Quintet, 13th Floor Elevators, Freddy Fender, Kinky Friedman, Ray Benson, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, Beyoncé and Destiny's Child, and many, many more.

In House of Hits, Andy Bradley and Roger Wood chronicle the fascinating history of Gold Star/SugarHill, telling a story that effectively covers the postwar popular music industry. They describe how Houston's lack of zoning ordinances allowed founder Bill Quinn's house studio to grow into a large studio complex, just as SugarHill's willingness to transcend musical boundaries transformed it into of one of the most storied recording enterprises in America. The authors offer behind-the-scenes accounts of numerous hit recordings, spiced with anecdotes from studio insiders and musicians who recorded at SugarHill. Bradley and Wood also place significant emphasis on the role of technology in shaping the music and the evolution of the music business. They include in-depth biographies of regional stars and analysis of the various styles of music they represent, as well as a list of all of Gold Star/SugarHill's recordings that made the Billboard charts and extensive selected historical discographies of the studio's recordings.

A fascinating piece of Texan music history, highly recommended By Midwest Book Review One of the biggest capitals of music in America got started due to a zoning law oversight. "House of Hits: The Story of Houston's Gold Star/Sugarhill Recording Studios" tells the story of how after the end of World War II, this small recording studio grew and became a juggernaut of music, bringing many hits and musical legends, such as Willie Nelson, into the American lime light. An in-depth history traces its history from the 1950s to the modern era where it sponsors acts like Destiny's Child. "House of Hits" is a fascinating piece of Texan music history, highly recommended.

The Freddy Fender Days By j james I worked as an assistant for awhile at Sugar Hill Studios in the 80's under the watchful eye of Lonnie Wright and Jack Duncan. Huey would come around very little while we were at work and was a fairly reclusive man as far as I knew him. I was surprised when I found out about all that happened. Not enough time and information was given to Lonnie Wright and Jack Duncan as far as this book goes. There was many a time the business would have folded if Lonnie and several of us had not worked for basically nothing and just a floor to sleep on in Studio B. Informative book, but boring at times.

Packwood This is a carefully written scholarly approach to the study of popular music in Houston, Texas and the book actually has an index.Anyone who reviews popular music today in Texas needs to have this book sitting close to their keyboard.I highly recommend this scholarly work and I recommend also that DJ's and journalists study and reference this work to be certain they know what they are talking about.

Behind the Wire is a story about the other side of the Vietnam War. It takes place at the beginning of the end of the United States’ involvement in Vietnam, from May 1970 to May 1971. Unlike many of the combat stories coming out of this war, this is a story about life in the rear, life behind the wire, and the 365 day experience that was shared by hundreds of thousands of soldiers who went to Vietnam but never saw combat. It’s a story about the large subculture of anti-war/anti-establishment troops that served there, and how they lived and experienced their “year in the Nam.” It’s a story about drugs, sex, rock & roll, insubordination, fraggings, and the incredible lifestyle that evolved in every rank of the military over the ten year course of the war. And it’s a story about an Army that knew it was losing, not only the war, but also the confidence and support of its troops. Just as protesters back home were changing the country’s view and support for the war, so too were many of the troops in Vietnam protesting the war in their own right. This is a real REMF (rear-echelon m--f--) story, as told by a U.S. Army journalist who spent his year in the Nam at the start of the wind-down period of the war.

Jim Stoup is a talented professional writer who captures the essence of life "Behind the Wire" in places like Cu Chi, Long Binh and Bien Hoa. I totally connected with his stories of the camaraderie shared between fellow troops "supporting" a war seen as a lost cause in the "drawdown years" of 1970 & 1971. Stoup made me laugh and made me cry, brilliantly weaving stories of these bizarre days and bringing many poignant moments back to life. This is a MUST read for anyone who served in the rear in Nam or knows someone who served.

A great book for the REMF's in NAM By Dennis Houser If you happened to be one of the many unfortunate individuals who wound up in the Republic of South Vietnam (more eloquently referred to as "the Nam" by those who were stationed there - LOL) AND especially served in the rear (i.e., not in actual combat) - then this is a must read for you. It will definitely bring back many memories as it did for me. John does an excellent job of recalling many of the experiences of that time that I'm sure are familiar to us all who were there - not to mention the feeling of not feeling very welcome on our return home (much unlike the hero's welcome our troops now receive upon returning from an overseas assignment). It is one of those books that I really hated to see have an ending - it is that enjoyable.

As a writer, I was anxious to read his book. It didn't disappoint.Jim draws readers inside his mind, sharing his initial fears, his relief at being posted to the rear, and his countdown to his trip home. The time between, his bizarre year in "the Nam," as he calls it, passes with drugs, sex, roll and roll, and the disrespect of all things military, in the tradition of MASH, one of my all-time favorite TV shows. He weaves into his story a good taste of how America was feeling in 1970-71 as more and more people began to wonder just why we were in Vietnam.Despite its topic, the book is an easy read that leaves the reader feeling like a confidant and a friend. To my mind, the mark of a good book is a reader's reluctance for it to end. When I turned the last page of "Behind the Wire," I was still hungry. I'll be looking for more from this former classmate.

Zitkala-Sa was a 19th century Sioux author and activist, and this is a collection of Native American tales he compiled during trips to various reservations.   Among Native American tribes, the Sioux are one of the best known and most important. Participants in some of the most famous and notorious events in American history, the history of the Sioux is replete with constant reminders of the consequences of both their accommodation of and resistance to American incursions into their territory by pioneering white settlers pushing further westward during the 19th century. Some Sioux leaders and their bands resisted incoming whites, while others tried to accommodate them, but the choice often had little impact on the ultimate outcome. Crazy Horse, who was never defeated in battle by U.S. troops, surrendered to them in 1877, only to be bayoneted to death by soldiers attempting to imprison him. Black Kettle, who flew a large American flag from his lodge to indicate his friendship with the white man, was shot to death by soldiers under George Custer's command in 1868.   Throughout the 19th century, the U.S. government and its officials in the West adopted a policy of dividing the Sioux into two groups: "Treaty Indians" and "Non-treaty Indians." Often they used these groups against each other or used one group to influence another, but the end was always the same. They were forced off the land where they resided, their populations were decimated by disease, and they were forced onto reservations to adopt lifestyles considered "appropriate" by American standards.   Despite being some of the most erstwhile foes the U.S. government faced during the Indian Wars, the Sioux and their most famous leaders were grudgingly admired and eventually immortalized by the very people they fought. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse remain household names due to their leadership of the Sioux at the fateful Battle of the Little Bighorn, where the native warriors wiped out much of George Custer's 7th Cavalry and inflicted the worst defeat of the Indian Wars upon the U.S. Army. Red Cloud remains a symbol of both defiance and conciliation, resisting the Americans during Red Cloud's War but also transitioning into a more peaceful life for decades on reservation.

Old Indian Legends, by Zitkala-Sa

About the Author Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (February 22, 1876 - January 26, 1938), better known by her pen name, Zitkala-Sa, was a Native American writer, editor, musician, teacher and political activist. She was born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota by her mother, Ellen Simmons, whose Yankton-Nakota name was Tate Iyohiwin (Every Wind or Reaches for the Wind). Zitkala-Sa lived a traditional lifestyle until the age of eight when she left her reservation to attend Whites Manual Labor Institute, a Quaker mission school in Wabash, Indiana. She went on to study for a time at Earlham College in Indiana and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. A considerable talent, Bonnin co-composed the first American Indian grand opera, The Sun Dance (composed in romantic style based on Ute and Sioux themes), in 1913. After working as a teacher at Carlisle Indian Industrial School, she moved to Boston and began publishing short stories and autobiographical vignettes. Her autobiographical writings were serialized in Atlantic Monthly from January to March of 1900 and, later, published in a collection called American Indian Stories in 1921. Her first book, Old Indian Legends, is a collection of folktales that she gathered during her visits home to the Yankton Reservation. Much of early scholarship on her life comes from American Indian Stories and, more recently, from Doreen Rappaport's biography titled The Flight of Red Bird. For other reliable scholarship, see the work of P. Jane Hafen.

FOX In this wonderful collection of D/N/Lakota stories originally published in 1901, Zitkala'sa ("Little Red Bird") retells fourteen legends (listed below)from the oral tradition. Most of the stories involve Iktomi (Unktomi) the Spider Trickster and his moral misadventures. Other stories include the Avenger and Iya ("Mouth")the Glutton. Most of the stories are used in showing the proper norms for D/N/Lakota society: be generous, do not be greedy, be hospitable, do not boast about yourself, do not deceive others to attain things, be merciful, be a good relative, etc. The reader will notice that some of the later stories do not follow the pattern of teaching morality, but seem to reflect older stories that do not always seem to follow logically. All in all, they are amazing stories that Zitkala'sa, also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, wrote for primarily white audiences. There is a nice biographical sketch of Zitkala'sa and the illustrations by Angel De Cora are interesting in that they imagine the characters in human form. Here are the stories as they appear in the book: "Iktomi and the Ducks," "Iktomi's Blanket," "Iktomi and the Muskrat," "Iktomi and the Coyote," "Iktomi and the Fawn," "The Badger and the Bear," "The Tree-Bound," "Shooting of the Red Eagle," "Iktomi and the Turtle," "Dance in the Buffalo Skull," "The Toad and the Boy," "Iya, the Camp-Eater," "Man'stin, The Rabbit," and "The Warlike Seven."

The first several stories are loosely linked and are probably best read in order, but otherwise the stories stand alone. They are a bit more violent than many Western tales, so if you're concerned about exposing your kids to violence, I might suggest reading over them first (I pretty much suggest that for every book of cultural tales, though). Also, many attitudes have changed since the times these stories were written, so although they cannot exactly be construed as prejudiced, there are a few odd phrases and translations that wouldn't have been used if the stories were transcribed today--nothing offensive, just odd. There were no formatting errors in the text. There is an active Table of Contents, but it is a chart, half of which is inaccessible. Even the available half looks incorrect in my kindle-for-pc program, though it's fine on the kindle itself. The kindle edition also lacks any discussion or author biography. The stories included are:Iktomi and the DucksIktomi's BlanketIktomi and the MuskratIktomi and the CoyoteIktomi and the FawnThe Badger and the BearThe Tree-BoundShooting of the Red EagleIktomi and the TurtleDance in a Buffalo SkullThe Toad and the BoyIya, the Camp-EaterManstin, the RabbitThe Warlike Seven

Raiding the Empire of the Sun: Tinian 1945, by Kit Crumpton

Review IBPA -Kit Crumpton takes her father's letters, photos, and old manuscripts and pens her own rendition of [the B-29 Superfortresses during] WWII. With personal insight and historical data, Raiding the Empire of the Sun: Tinian 1945 is well resourced. Crumpton humanizes history with her characters, but the story is more factual than fictional. The protagonist is based on her father, therefore the point ofview is through his eyes. He is strong, masculine, with a positive perspective on life, making him a likeable character. Crumpton takes you into the [PacificTheater], setting the story in the core of the world wide conflict.

From the Author Dedication:To the courage of the men of the U.S. Army Air Corps who did what they had to do.To B-29 designer, Eddie Allen, the manufacturers of the B-29, and especially to "Rosie the Riveter" who, together, made the Superfortress fly higher, be stronger and go faster than any other bomber aircraft of its time.  To my dad and his crew who flew a harrowing mission over Tokyo, flying the B-29, "Eddie Allen", as depicted on the cover of this book.To the crew of the B-29, "Dark Eyes".Thanks be to God, you all came home.

From the Back Cover Suddenly the B-29 broke into a stall. The pilot and co-pilot control columns became mush, completely free of any cable tension. The airship faltered in the air and started to descend forward, mushing wildly about, completely out of control. "Tony," snapped Jenson, "Climb twenty-four hundred, quick!" Tony didn't reply but the four powerful engines shuddered in response to Tony jamming the four throttles forward.

Prokop Wow I never really realized what these brave pilots experienced while on these long 18-hour bombing missions flying over the ocean on over to Japan facing enemy flak and searchlights. The author describes in detail the B-29 and its workings as well as how the group manning it worked as a team to hit their target and get back to Tinian alive. For all the WW II buffs to enjoy as well as anybody wanting to learn the history of the B-29 pilots and life on Tinian in harsh conditions.

Daily lotteries take females from the dying Earth, to the planet of Karal. Their sole purpose has been to breed with the Karal to make their next generation. Until now. Seven lottery winners are chosen to compete, to go on the first deep space mission, to find a new planet for the humans to call home. Only one gets to go. The rest will be sent to the farming belt. Bronwyn has always wanted a child, but she cannot bear the idea of sentencing a child to a life on the dying Earth. Instead, she uses her extra coin to help her brother and his family. But she can't help entering the lottery, in the hope she can fulfil her dream of having her own child one day on the planet Karal. However, when she does win the lottery, she has another decision to make. Win the trials and become the first human female to go into deep space, or live safely on Karal. She hopes if she discovers a new planet, she might be able to secure a place for her brother and his family there. That is the only reason she tries her best, it has nothing to do with not wanting to lose to Lucile, a pent from Earth. Or her attraction to the huge, well muscled Karalian who will be her companion on the mission. Quin is the pilot of the first deep space mission, he would rather go alone than with a female. But he has no choice, he must fulfil his duties and breed before his prime ends. To make sure his son is strong and intelligent, he is willing to put his own preferences aside and take the winner of the trials. But the more he sees of Bronwyn, the more he wants to put aside his best judgement. Even if it means putting the mission in at risk, because he knows she makes him feel things that might influence his actions. And that could be bad news for them both, and the whole of the human race. Contains strong sexual themes and is meant for adults only.

If as a woman you had a chance to put your name in a lottery to be taken off planet and have children with an alien species would you do it? Bronwyn is she knows that a life on earth is ending. She is determined to make a good life for herself even though she was seen as a lower class citizen.Quinn is a Karal warrior, and the chosen mate of Bron. He believes that all he has to do is mate with the human female, get his son and send her away. Then he can raise his son. As the two of them learn more about each other and there relationship evolves it takes some interesting turned.A great book, that keeps you interested from the very beginning.

By Sarah Womble/Susan Ryan Harmony Raines can do amazing stories with bear, wolf, and dragon shifters. She really rocked it with her Alien Series on the Karal people who came to earth in search of women. Now she has taken the Karal Warriors to a whole new level. She now has them getting ready to go into deep space as promised to find new planet for the human race to live on since they have killed Earth.Okil and Quin are getting the 7 lottery winners ready to make their trip to Karal. 1 will mate with Quin and make the first trip to deep space and the other 6 will go to the farming belt and settle with Kalaran's of their own.Bronwyn has always a wanted a child of her own, even if she has to mate with an alien to get it. She slightly regrets her choice when she realizes that her brothers family will have to survive without her and they were just barely surviving while she was working and helping them out.Quin is the first warrior to go looking for the new planet for the people of earth, but he had rather make the trip alone instead of with a woman! While choosing his mate it looks as though the spoiled Lucile is going to win the challenges and Quin really doesn't like her, but then he catches Lucile cheating and he is relieved that he can now choose Bronwyn. Not going to give you any spoilers. You really must read the book. You will not put it down till you have finished it.

The first mission to find a new planet for the people of Earth is underway. Quin, a Karal warrior and deep space explorer, he will be the first to leave, but first he has to chose a female to go with him. Bronwynm "Bron", is chosen by Quin for her intelligence, curiosity, and ingenuity, he is also strongly attracted to her. Loved Quin and Bron's story. Their journey was dangerous and full of challanges, and unexpected encounters. Along the way they learned to trust, understand, and love each other. Looking forward to the next story.

Neal Preston's legendary music images include some of the most memorable ever made of rock's most iconic stars. If this era could be described as a hurricane, Neal captured this from his unique position in the eye of the Rock'n'Roll hurricane. By Douglas Harr This is a fantastic book, really a guide to the German gallery showing Neal Preston had earlier this year. It's perfect for any fan of Rock 'n Roll, or the photographic arts. This edition focuses on bands of the last millennia including Led Zeppelin, for whom Preston became the touring photographer. You will find Queen, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Madonna, Dr Dre, Bowie, Pearl Jam - a list too long to enumerate here. There are iconic shots of each including the Robert Plant 'dove' snap from 73, Floyd at The Wall, Michael Jackson - arms outstretched, and many others rendered with perfect compositions. The text in this edition is almost all in German, but there are some key passages in English and there is only a limited release of this for his gallery showing in Germany. Fans of Led Zeppelin should also download the must-see iBook Sound and Fury.

Each page has a darling doodle that inspires more. Some are black and white and others are in color. My favorite page is one in yellow and gray. This would also make a fun journal.

(I am an adult with no drawing skills looking to learn.) It is almost too simplistic and the drawings, to my eye, are kind of ugly. They aren't cute or whimsical, which I had expected by the cover. One page has a cloud shape filled with dots; that's it. Another page: 3 circles, each containing lines. Another page: an arrow. Another: the letters xoxo. Not sure how I'll use this. I bought The Art of the Doodle and Craft-a-Doodle at the same time and they are far more inspiring to me.

The doodles are so so so simple that I don't even have words to describe this stupidity. Good paper quality, though.Seriously, this is a very subtle way to rip you off. The "doodles" if you can even call them that, are horrible. I wouldn't even give this to a child.

PDF Ebook Before the Dawn: An Autobiography, by Gerry Adams

The controversial autobiography of the man at the heart of Irish Republican politics. Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams offers his own unique, intimate account of the early years of his career, from his childhood in working-class Belfast to the more turbulent years of social activism that followed. An engaging and revealing self-portrait.>

Born in West Belfast in 1948 into a family with close ties to both the trade union and republican movements, his childhood, despite its material poverty, he has described in glowing and humorous terms.

For many years his voice was banned from radio and television by both the British and Irish governments, while commentators and politicians condemned him and all he stood for. But through those years Brandon published a succession of books which made an important contribution to an understanding of the true circumstances of life and politics in the north of Ireland.

In his autobiography, Before the Dawn, Gerry Adams brings a unique perspective to the years of conflict, insurrection and bitter struggle which ensued when peaceful political agitation was met with hysterical reaction and the sectarian tinderbox of Britain's last colony erupted. From the pogroms of 1969 to the hunger strikes of 1981, from the streets of West Belfast to the cages of Long Kesh, his powerful memoir is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand modern Ireland.

Before the Dawn: An Autobiography, by Gerry Adams

Amazon.com Review Closing in 1981 with the deaths of ten Irish Republican Army hunger strikers in Long Kesh prison, the author chronicles the years before he became president of Sinn Fein, the I.R.A.'s political wing. Wrenching accounts of the hunger strike and of the 1969 riots in Northern Ireland that turned a 20-year-old bartender into an activist are counterbalanced by the warmth with which Adams portrays his family and comrades, the atmospheric precision with which he evokes the sights and sounds of his West Belfast community. Not the whole truth by any means, but a compelling partisan document.

From Library Journal The controversial Sinn Fein leader comes clean in this autobiography.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Adams, the telegenic president of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, is a fine prose stylist, as his four earlier books, both fiction and nonfiction, have demonstrated. This autobiography well may gain him even more fans on this side of the water. Yet in many ways, Adams' nonfiction is less satisfying than his fiction. For instance, whereas he is fully attentive to the inner realities of his fictional characters, when he describes the deaths of hunger-strikers in this book, he adopts a staccato tone that robs the events of emotional impact. The need to protect those still on the run doubtless reins him in; perhaps when peace is finally settled in his homeland, we will hear the rest of his story. Until then, this memoir of poverty and revolution will find many readers. Patricia Monaghan

In the process, he has accomplished also writing a history book. This book demonstrates and details the life of a man who questions the systems justices and dares to speak out against those who would oppress his people. The life he has described (being on the run, being locked up in the Kesh, etc) could be used to describe the lives of the countless dissidents who take a stand for nationalism everyday. As an Irishman who does not support Sinn Fein (Adams' Political Party) or the so called Belfast Agreement, I still have respect for the accomplishments Adams made to the movement in the important 1969-1996 years. To those who would label the likes of Adams a terrorist, I remind them that he is no more a terrorist than George Washington or Thomas Jefferson would have been during the American Revolution for Independence. It has been said, "One man's terrorist, is another man's freedom fighter." Only history will show which he will be remembered for.

When I got back from a trip to Ireland this past August (I stayed in County Tyrone in the North with relatives of my mom's), I started to read a lot about the politics of the North. This was one of the books I read. "Before the Dawn" is a relatively quick read, but it will not provide one with the overall historical background behind the Troubles (the conflict goes back hundreds of years starting with the Potato Famine of 1845-49, and even earlier than that). However, Adams does describe in great detail the British Army raids during times of Internment, the torture that internees had to endure (how would you like it if someone blindfolded you, made you walk across glass and nails and such while beating you and then put you on a helicopter, and then pushed you off, not knowing if you were a mere 8 feet off the ground or several hundered?). For a more balanced view of the Troubles, try reading John Conroy's "Belfast Diary". Conroy is an American journalist who spent 1977-82 in West Belfast. It's also a very gritty, steet-level account. As for the IRA's kneecappings, it should be noted that most locals did approve of them, because Catholics felt they couln't go to the British RUC.

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. An Irish hero By A Customer Gerry Adams is a national hero to my people and this book is very accurate of the situation in my island. In response to the comments of fragmeister from Bournemouth, I think he is a typical ignorant English man, analysing the situation from a distance and making rash statements. I would love to see where he got his figures from because most of the people of Northern Ireland want to be freed from English oppression and nearly all the people from the South want the same. The British government forced the republican movement to be by being imperialist bullies in the past and holding on to land that simply isn't theirs. I could go on with this argument all day but I won't. Fragmeister, try living here and see what the British government have done to my people and you won't put down a man like Gerry Adams. This book is a good read, not great, but written by a hero and should be appreciated by all.

Amada Cardenas, a Mexican American woman from the borderlands of South Texas, played a pivotal role in the little-known history of the peyote trade. She and her husband were the first federally licensed peyote dealers. They began harvesting and selling the sacramental plant to followers of the Native American Church (NAC) in the 1930s, and after her husband's death in the late 1960s Mrs. Cardenas continued to befriend and help generations of NAC members until her death in 2005, just short of her 101st birthday. Author Stacy B. Schaefer, a close friend of Amada, spent thirteen years doing fieldwork with this remarkable woman. Her book weaves together the geography, biology, history, cultures, and religions that created the unique life of Mrs. Cardenas and the people she knew. Schaefer includes their words to help tell the story of how Mexican Americans, Tejanos, gringos, Native Americans, and others were touched and inspired by Amada Cardenas's embodiment of the core NAC values: faith, hope, love, and charity.

I really enjoyed learning about the story of Amada Cardenas, and I would highly recommend it to those who want to learn about to the holy sacrament of the Native American Church and the history of the harvesters or peyoteros. Amada was a real person whose story can inspire us all to more love faith hope, and charity in all our lives. I am very thankful this book exists as there isn't another book like it.
