Wayne County, West Virginia, was established on January 18, 1842, from part of Cabell County and named for Gen. Mad Anthony Wayne. The states westernmost county, it lies at the juncture of two rivers: the Ohio and Big Sandy. The town of Wayne is the county seat. Although the southern half of the county was first to be settled, it was slow to develop. In contrast, the northern part bordering Cabell County grew rapidly. The city of Huntington ultimately expanded westward into Wayne County, an area now known as Westmoreland. In addition to Wayne and Huntington, the county has three other incorporated communities: Ceredo, Kenova, and Fort Gay. In the 19th century, timbering and farming were the countys economic mainstays. The southern end of the county experienced a growth spurt when, in 1890, the Norfolk & Western Railway was completed to Kenova. Today, many residents commute to Huntington or nearby Ashland, Kentucky. The county is the birthplace of gospel singer Michael W. Smith, major league pitcher Donnie Robinson, and Fannie Belle Fleming, better known as stripper Blaze Starr.

Among the most magnificent buildings of England are its Anglican cathedrals, great symbols of spiritual and architectural power. There are few experiences more uplifting and humbling than standing in the nave of a cathedral, and no one can fail to marvel at Durham’s incomparable Romanesque masterpiece, the elegant stylistic unity of Salisbury, the world-famous stained glass of Canterbury or the striking Gothic scissor arch at Wells.Britain is the top foreign tourist destination for Americans, with 3 million visiting each year, and historic buildings are the top visitor sites. Canterbury Cathedral alone receives over 40,000 visitors each year from the United States and, together with Durham, is a World Heritage Site.In this truly breathtaking book, award-winning Magnum photographer, Peter Marlow, has captured the nave of each of England’s 42 Anglican cathedrals. Taken in natural light at dawn, usually looking towards the east window, these remarkable images bring into sharp relief the full splendour of the buildings.Marlow first took up photography as a student, after visiting an exhibition of the photographs of Walker Evans at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The impetus to begin photographing cathedrals came from a commission in 2007 from the Royal Mail for photographs of the interiors or six cathedrals, for use on a set of commemorative stamps. Once the commission was complete, Marlow was inspired to continue the project in his own time. Approaching the Dean and Chapter of each cathedral, he gained permission to enter each building in the early hours of the morning and to turn off all artificial lights. Marlow adopted a kind of ritual, waking as early as 3.00 am to drive to the location and begin working from 6.00 am. In this window of opportunity, he watched the cathedral interior emerge from the darkness and come to life.Marlow’s spellbinding photographs are accompanied by his commentary on the project, including sketches, preparatory shots and technical notes; an introduction by curator Martin Barnes on the tradition of church photography, especially the work of Frederick Evans and Edwin Smith; and a concise summary of each cathedral interior by architectural historian John Goodall.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This book is gorgeous! By C. J. Struthers The book is set up with the first half of the book being filled with full page color plates of some of England's most ornate cathedrals and then the second half of the book details each cathedral providing dates of construction, architect and builder information along with lots of additional information.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Naves only By K. Sido This book features excellent photography from the technical sense. I was hoping for much more. English Cathedrals offer so much more than that seen with simply shots taken head-on of the nave to the chancel. Having visited many, the possibilities are nearly endless and therein lies the challenge of selection. The famous scissors arch of Wells Cathedral is well known and well shown here. But the steps leading to the chapter house memorialized in the famous "Sea of Steps" by Frederick Evans could have been captured again, albeit posing a significant challenge to any photographer. In short, this book is fine if one wants to see plenty of shots as on the cover. Just don't plan on seeing any details of the rest of the magnificent cathedrals.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing!!! By RBC It is just a picture looking down the nave of each cathedral and then at the back of the book are a few notes about each cathedral. It was just a little disappointing. I have a great many wonderful books about Great Britain and this is one that I would not recommend to anyone.

In his in-depth and compelling study of perhaps the most famous of Portuguese colonial massacres, Mustafah Dhada explores why the massacre took place, what Wiriyamu was like prior to the massacre, how events unfolded, how we came to know about it and what the impact of the massacre was, particularly for the Portuguese empire.

Spanning the period from 1964 to 2013 and complete with a foreword from Peter Pringle, this chronologically arranged book covers the liberation war in Mozambique and uses fieldwork, interviews and archival sources to place the massacre firmly in its historical context. The Portuguese Massacre of Wiriyamu in Colonial Mozambique, 1964-2013 is an important text for anyone interested in the 20th-century history of Africa, European colonialism and the modern history of war.

The Portuguese Massacre of Wiriyamu in Colonial Mozambique, 1964-2013, by Mustafah Dhada

Review

“This book is a feat of investigative research and layered storytelling. Dhada unearths with exceptional degree of detail the events surrounding the infamous Portuguese colonial massacre of Wiriyamu, as well as the ways in which competing narratives about this event were crafted, buried, revealed, diffused, and contested. The book leads the reader through a maze of documents and memories, until a shattering vision of the destruction of Wiriyamu in which even the trees come to life to testify. The writing is alive with personal passion spanning decades; rich, sophisticated, and utterly compelling.” ―Paolo Israel, University of the Western Cape, South Africa, author of In Step with the Times: Mapiko Masquerades of Mozambique

“The murdered inhabitants of Wiriyamu, casualties of brutal Portuguese refusal to relinquish imperial rule, now have the recognition they deserve. Mustafah Dhada's heroic work of historical reconstruction relocates these lost lives: documenting the names of the 385, he reminds us of the potential they represented. Dhada interweaves the narrative of the massacre with the fierce course of decolonization and subsequent debates on the legacy of Wiriyamu. Portugal's young officers, persuaded by Mozambicans, overthrew their generals and made Portugal a democracy; Mozambique gained independence but could not get free of Cold War or imperial struggles. In its interplay of revolutionaries, priests, villagers, soldiers, and journalists, this multilayered work shows how senseless exercise of power, accompanied by denial, remains with us.” ―Patrick Manning, University of Pittsburg, USA and President, American Historical Association

Portuguese Erasure of Wiriyamu and its People in Mozambique, 1972 By Shawn Lawhon Few historical works have been emotional reads for me, however Dhada’s is one of them. European imperialism resulted in the massacres of many indigenous people and the Portuguese Empire is no exception. In the 60s, the Portuguese, under the leadership of Salazar and then Caetano, attempted to suppress a group of freedom fighters in Mozambique known as Frelimo. The colonial secret police (DGS) in Mozambique engaged in brutal tactics to suppress the organization including imprisonment and murder. On December 16, 1972, the DGS ambushed the tiny village of Wiriyamu, killing at least 400 men, women, and children in unspeakable ways. Dhada warns early in his work that the narrative of the massacre is not for the faint of heart and the account is truly gut-wrenching. Furthermore, the Portuguese and colonial government attempted to erase the massacre as well as the village from existence in an extensive cover up. Due to the efforts of priests within Mozambique who catalogued and recorded evidence, news of the massacre was smuggled out of the country. Much of this news was then brought to international attention by father Adrian Hastings and reporter Peter Pringle.Today, the massacre remains a sensitive topic among the Portuguese, yet its evidence is clear and Dhada’s work excels in laying it bare. The first portion of his work describes the extensive manner in which evidence for this work was collected. Although Dhada recommends that those simply interested in the narrative proceed to later chapters, I would advise all interested in the gathering of evidence for a historical work to disregard such advice and read. As a history student, his description of his process for collecting evidence, especially from oral sources was fascinating and extremely helpful. Furthermore, his interviews bring out the humanity of the victims. Those massacred in Wiriyamu were not statistics, they were mothers and fathers going about their daily work preparing for a celebration of rain; they are brothers and sons tending their cattle; they are children at play.Dhada’s work is thoroughly researched and highly readable.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Portuguese colonial authorities attempt to annihilate whole village in 1970s Mozambique! By Jesse Gutierrez The cry for independence in Mozambique in the 1960s and a desire for self-rule witnessed the overthrow of Portugal’s nearly 500 year rule in Africa (p. 57). Mustafah Dhada’s The Portuguese Massacre of Wiriyamu in Colonial Mozambique, 1964-2013 chronicles the annihilation of the village of Wiriyamu and its people in 1972, highlighting the role the massacre played in Mozambique’s independence and the downfall of the Portuguese empire in 1974. Professor Dhada’s fast-paced monograph immediately tackles the events of the Wiriyamu massacre by introducing Peter Pringle, an English reporter, and his role in Mozambique’s liberation (p. 9). Dhada’s meticulous narrative based on extensive oral, archival, and physical evidence, and tried and true scholarship disputes Portugal’s claims of Luso-tropicalism or Portuguese benevolence, that there was no Wiriyamu massacre, and that no such village by the name of Wiriyamu ever existed (p. 147). Dhada captivates the reader with his masterful narrative daring his audience to put down the book, but the events and actors surrounding the Wiriyamu massacre, including the story’s antagonists, some of which committed acts of mercy (p. 174), compel the reader to carry on and if they do, they will breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the true story of the Wiriyamu massacre has finally come to light and is not lost to history.

Vale a pena!

The Book of Jubilees, or, as it is sometimes called, "the little Genesis," purports to be a revelation given by God to Moses through the medium of an angel, and containing a history, divided up into jubilee-periods of forty-nine years, from the creation to the coming of Moses.   From the preface:  "THE object of this series of translations is primarily to furnish students with short, cheap, and handy text-books, which, it is hoped, will facilitate the study of the particular texts in class under competent teachers. But it is also hoped that the volumes will be acceptable to the general reader who may be interested in the subjects with which they deal. It has been thought advisable, as a general rule, to restrict the notes and comments to a small compass; more especially as, in most cases, excellent works of a more elaborate character are available. Indeed, it is much to be desired that these translations may have the effect of inducing readers to study the larger works. Our principal aim, in a word, is to make some difficult texts, important for the study of Christian origins, more generally accessible in faithful and scholarly translations. In most cases these texts are not available in a cheap and handy form. In one or two cases texts have been included of books which are available in the official Apocrypha; but in every such case reasons exist for putting forth these texts in a new translation, with an Introduction, in this series."

Beardsley I have other editions of the "Book of Jubilees" and this is a no-frills, solo scrip torus version of the book. There are other books with a lot of Hebrew and Greek references in foot notes, that I would recommend over this particular edition. But if all you want are the scriptures without the added references, this is a good choice!

Sarasota Countys island and beach communities, including Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Venice, and Manasota Key, provide beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife, and lush vegetation. Images of America: Sarasota County Islands and Beaches explores the history of the area and its pioneers, developers, and residents. The beaches offer natural beauty, where sugar-white sand, fishing, and boating abound. In the late 1800s, settlers and developers such as John Savarese, John Casey, and Frank Higel arrived, allowing later developers like Bertha Palmer, Harry Higel, and John Ringling to build housing, farms, and businesses. In the 1920s, the land boom brought thousands of people to the area. This ended with the Great Depression, which depopulated many of the islands until the beginning of World War II brought an army airbase and other regional activity started developing this coastal region.

1786 October A crisp autumn day. The “river of hawks” flows above a sunlit field… Lazy smudges of smoke rise from the stone chimney of a small cabin where three young children play while their parents lay fence. The eldest sister stacks rails in the woods. She wishes she was spending the lovely day anywhere else. The cabin lies just off “The War Path,” an ancient trail soaked with the blood of Shawnee and Iroquois who once both lay claim to this land. The Iroquois are long gone, but Shawnee are plentiful, and they continue to wage the late war of their British Fathers. They raid the homes of those who encroach on their territory, or lure them to watery deaths on the Ohio River. More than 3000 settlers in the Ohio River Valley have been carried into captivity since 1783, when the war officially ended with The Treaty of Paris. The Shawnee are left on the side of the losers. For safety’s sake, the Flynn family and others have been staying at a nearby fort. But they must return to their land to build a fence, to make “an improvement” desired by the young US government through provisions of the Northwest Ordinance. This improvement makes the Flynns eligible for hundreds of additional acres. They race against the approach of winter. And Shawnee raiders. At the gobbling of wild turkeys, the Flynns halt in their tasks. A moment later, blasts from Indian rifles blow their world apart. Nothing will ever be the same.

About the Author The author grew up hearing stories of "The Ancestors" told by her grandparents from the Ozarks. These tales lay dormant until years later while visiting a genealogy site, she stumbled upon a reference to The Draper Papers compiled by historian Lyman Draper, containing amazing fragments of the Flynns' stories. The manuscripts lead to other happy discoveries, and the rest of the story. The author lives with her husband, Mark and various four-legged critters in the beautiful Willamette valley of Oregon. The author grew up hearing stories of "The Ancestors" told by her grandparents from the Ozarks. One tale especially captured her imagination: among the ancestors was a pair of sisters who were kidnapped and adopted by Indians. One married a chief and became a princess, (!) and was eventually rescued by Daniel Boone. (Who would want to be rescued from being an Indian princess, she wondered?) (And what happened to her clothes?) Sadly, details were scant and the story lay dormant until years later, when a distant family member on a genealogy site pointed to The Draper Papers, compiled by historian Lyman Draper, which contained amazing fragments of the Flynn’s story. Then she began to fill in the blanks.

By Cheri Here is a story full of adventure, the power of people to live through and overcome heartache, stories of romance, history, and a variety of American cultures. American history buffs will meet some familiar characters and Tecumseh fans will not be disappointed. This story brought me a whole new perspective of daily life on the Fromtier in the early days of our country. Readers meet a cast of interesting characters, are likely to grow to care for some of them deeply by the end of the story. Hope there will be a sequel! Not only is the story lively and interesting, the writing is often compelling and lovely. At times I had to just stop reading the story for a moment and savor the words.

The book is written so it can be appreciated by young adults on up. The story is engaging and the characters well developed and I found myself caring about what happened to them. Ms. Jarrell's book explores many aspects of a period of history seldom studied while weaving in interesting stories and characters that keep you wanting to turn the page to discover what happens next. It is evident that Ms. Jarrell is proud of her ancestry and did extensive research on her family and their place in that time. She is apt at interjecting believable fiction into the historical and ancestral facts she found through her extensive research. If I were a high school history teacher, I would not hesitate to assign this book as a reading assignment to introduce students to this period of history. I look forward to additional work by Ms. Jarrell.

Even though it gave a lot of historical context, it was easy to read. I was intrigued by each character, she developed them well. I'll be recommending this to a lot of my friends who like reading historical fiction.

A thrilling account of the final years of the War Between the States and the great general who led the Union to victory   This conclusion of Pulitzer Prize–winning author Bruce Catton’s acclaimed Civil War history of General Ulysses S. Grant begins in the summer of 1863. After Grant’s bold and decisive triumph over the Confederate Army at Vicksburg—a victory that wrested control of the Mississippi River from Southern hands—President Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to the head of the Army of the Potomac. The newly named general was virtually unknown to the nation and to the Union’s military high command, but he proved himself in the brutal closing year and a half of the War Between the States. Grant’s strategic brilliance and unshakeable tenacity crushed the Confederacy in the battles of the Overland Campaign in Virginia and the Siege of Petersburg.   In the spring of 1865, Grant finally forced Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, thus ending the bloodiest conflict on American soil. Although tragedy struck only days later when Lincoln—whom Grant called “incontestably the greatest man I have ever known”—was assassinated, Grant’s military triumphs would ensure that the president’s principles of unity and freedom would endure.   In Grant Takes Command, Catton offers readers an in-depth portrait of an extraordinary warrior and unparalleled military strategist whose brilliant battlefield leadership saved an endangered Union.

Engrossing and accurate Grant portrayal By Candace Scott Bruce Catton is arguably the greatest Grant biographer and is largely responsible for changing the negative views about Grant in the 1950's and 60's. Catton wrote several books about USG and this is the third and final part of a grand Grant trilogy begun in 1949 by Lloyd Lewis with "Captain Sam Grant."Bruce Catton thoroughly understand Ulysses Grant and became his vociferous proponent. He correctly grasped that Grant was the preeminent strategist of the civil war and was also the war's greatest, most innovative and most determined general. Those who errantly believe Grant won with brute force or superior numbers need to read this book. Others who espouse the line that Robert E. Lee was the real genius of the war also need to consult this volume. At its conclusion, you will change your mind and realize that Grant was not only a magnificent soldier, he was also a highly intelligent, humorous and marvelously humane man. He has been unfairly maligned and Catton sets the record straight.Catton writes with perception about Grant as a father and devoted husband, but the thrust of the book is painting an incise portrait of Grant in the pivotal period 1861-1863 when his greatness was forged. This is a "must have" book for anyone interested in U.S. Grant or the American civil war. There are few, if any, factual errors and the narrative flows smoothly from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

Clear history of Grant's achievements By lordhoot It is almost amazing that even after nearly 40 years, this book still stand the test of time as one of the best studies of General U.S. Grant's tenure as the military commander of all Federal forces. The book starts off from the Chattanooga campaign in late 1863 and moving on to his promotion as overall commander and his attachment to the Army of the Potomac for the rest of the war. By this move he clearly determined that General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia will be his primary target and a key to overall victory for the Union. Bruce Catton does a wonderful job in narrating each event in a clear and colorful way that make this book a joy to read.Best part of Catton's writing is the way he make individual characters stand out in a way that most pertaining to the event at hand. We understand how Lincoln and Grant bonded so well, how even Meade and Grant worked well on surface and why Grant kept his eye on the ball when grinding Lee down to earth. This book is a follow-up to Catton's earlier work, Grant Moves South which was published 7 years prior to this book and captured Grant's military activities from the beginning of the war to end of the Vicksburg campaign in 1863. As part of the two book set, Bruce Catton continued to captured the essence of Grant's military chronicles with clarity and understanding that any reader can appreciate. For anyone interested in the American Civil War, this book is sure to be part of your mandatory reading material and the best part is that its really is a great reading book.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. At Last, A Winning Commander for Lincoln By HMS Warspite "Grant Takes Command" is the second of two volumes by Bruce Catton on Grant's Civil War service and the third volume of a trilogy on Grant's military career (beginning with Lloyd Lewis's "Captain Sam Grant"). However, this volume can easily be ready by itself. Catton picks up the story in the fall of 1863 with Grant's successful raising of the siege of Chanttanooga, following which President Lincoln picks him for a third star and command of all the Union armies.Grant is the latest in a long series of Union commanders, most of whom have been badly beaten by General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia, and none of whom have been able to bring superior Northern resources effectively to bear on a slowly weakening Confederacy. In fact, as Grant takes command, the war has not yet been won and could still be lost.Grant will be the commander that Lincoln has long sought. Lincoln's telling exchange with an aide, repeated by Catton, lays out why. Grant is the first general to take the supreme command who will work in harness with Lincoln and in full acceptance of Lincoln's constraints as President of a democracy in the midst of a civil war. Grant is prepared to take full responsibility for the conduct of the missions of the armies, and without setting up an alibi in advance for possible failure. And as it becomes apparent in the course of Catton's absolutely superb narrative, Grant understands the terrible math. Lee and his army are too proficient to be easily beaten; great persistance will be called for. Grant grasps the essential truth that Lee's army is the Confederate center of gravity, and the corallary that Lee's requirement to protect Richmond ultimately limits his ability to maneuver. Further, Grant is able to cause the Union armies to work at a common design, denying Lee the ability to reinforce Virginia by drawing on other theaters of war. The result will be a long, grinding, and exceedingly bloody campaign stretching from 1864 into 1865, as Lee's army is slowly bludgeoned to death.Catton's narrative does not spare Grant his errors; in the 1864 campaign, Grant underestimates both Lee's abilities as a general and the difficulties of conducting campaigns on such a huge scale. Grant has to learn the job of Army commander in chief on the move; the unnecessary casualties of Cold Harbor and the repeated failures to flank Lee out of position in Virginia are proof of the learning curve. But Grant's great gift is his refusal to be deterred from his objective; he pins Lee at Petersburg and uses the Union armies of Sherman and Sheridan, among others, to destroy the Confederacy's means to make war."Grant Takes Command" was first published in 1960, and the details of the history of the Civil War have evolved since then. However, Catton's prose has stood the test of time. This is a truly magnificently told story on an epic scale and a highly recommended treat for the Civil War enthusiast and the casual reader alike.

It is 1968. Across America, citizens march for social reform and an end to the Vietnam War. Amid all this, Surya Green--a New York-born, self-absorbed, modern young woman--is a student at Stanford University, blithely pursuing a graduate degree in communication. Her view of life's purpose unexpectedly starts to expand when she says "Yes" when her Stanford film mentor selects her for a writing job at Zagreb Film in Yugoslavia. Family and friends marvel at her courage, or foolishness. The Zagreb studio may be the renowned producer of the first non-American animated film to win an Oscar, but it is in a country most Americans fear and reject as "communist." Green has no idea that her stay in Yugoslavia will ultimately take her beyond national borders to the outermost limits of her mind. Although penned in the first person against the backdrop of Tito's Yugoslavia in historic 1968, Once Upon a Yugoslavia is, paradoxically, most timely. The global economic crisis has compelled people to question excessive consumption and redefine success and the good life while embracing new lifestyle priorities--just as Yugoslavia required of Surya Green decades ago. Once Upon a Yugoslavia  addresses this present-day longing while also offering a lively history lesson.History books have objectively described the former Yugoslavia, but Once Upon a Yugoslavia gives personalized look at the everyday lives of people in pre-1989 Eastern Europe that shows how the experience transformed one young woman's American Dream. Chronicling the sights, sounds, and ups and downs of the everyday Yugoslav existence, Green speaks to both the positive and negative aspects of the contemporary phenomenon known as "Yugo-nostalgia." The pros and cons of the American and Yugoslav societies fly to and fro during Surya's conversations with a host of colorful characters--some of whom she lodges with and travels the countryside with, others of whom she dates. In this strange Big Brotherish country of perplexing language, culture, and customs--which gives Surya an early experience of living a monitored life without privacy in a land where paranoia is contagious--more than once readers will hear her sobbing at night. Ultimately, the Yugoslav social experiment--its plus points, at least--were to give Surya Green a considerably altered view of the American values with which she was raised. And it is what led to that perspective--a personal transformation that started for her in explosive, memorable, life-changing 1968 in Tito's Yugoslavia, and continues to this day--which makes Once Upon a Yugoslavia such a unique and remarkable book.

Once Upon a Yugoslavia: When the American Way Met Tito's Third Way, by Surya Green

Review "Surya Green's fascinating book narrates two journeys undertaken simultaneously. . . . It is often said that travel broadens the mind. In Green's case, immersion in Tito's Yugoslavia served to deepen as well as broaden her knowledge of herself, and the social orders of both Yugoslavia and her American homeland." -- Henry Breitrose, Stanford University "An important testament. I have not before read an account of the former Yugoslavia made so plain." -- John Grierson, pioneering documentary filmmaker

A Story within a Story By Toni Zuper Once Upon a YugoslaviaPresented as a first hand immersion into 1968’s Yugoslavia, Surya Green presents a memoir both historically reflective and personally introspective. A deeply felt, consistently integrated, bass line runs beneath the text of her account, making it a valuable read. Its essence is spiritual liberation birthing from the struggles of confinement. In precious rarity, parallel accounts of this existential evolution surface from the oppression most generally associated with prison stays, orphanage life, and monastic seclusion. Liberation is never the quid pro quo of time survived in a closed system. It is the exception to every likelihood, and requires a committed resolve to move consciously inward when familiar freedoms are eliminated.Surya Green painstakingly considers the social and political implications of two diverse societies: Vietnam-Era America and Tito’s, post WWII Yugoslavia. Although the author strives to discern experiential clarity from the distraction of physical and psychological discomfort, the story evolves into the catalyzing her own inner alchemy. This book’s merit is established by the author’s ability to demonstrate her inner process as she articulates external events with inexhaustible consideration. It is an imperfect and messy process. The narrative is persistent in such a way as one would need to be continuously listening, and working at the edge of one’s limits to stretch beyond the personal mundane and into the ecstatic Self. Having left the bright lights of NYC, Green embarks on a deepening exploration of societal shadow through the dim, the drab, and the dreary routine characteristic of this Balkan arena. Although she has consciously opted to intern abroad, the shift of cultural dictates creates personal distress with a swift initiation to all things disenchanting. American ebullience is replaced with systematized repression via social rejection, commercial limitations, and constricted professional opportunities. These intangibles build the walls of Green’s confinement. This confinement sets the premise for an unwitting invitation to embrace the practice of yoga.To those not practicing yoga, the word connotates physical exercise. However, the practice is not about contortions; it is a willing immersion into the difficulty of stretching limits of mind, heart, and personality. Postures are one method of employing awkward discomfort to awaken to deeper levels of conscious connection. Yet many yogis don’t practice postures (asana). Sitting in stillness (dharana), quieting all thought (dhyana), observing ethics (yamas), transmuting challenges (niyamas), and dissolving distractions (pratyahara) comprise other limbs of yoga practice. Once Upon a Yugoslavia is an unspoken practice of these limbs.Intern supervisor at Zagreb Films, Zelimir Matko, offers Ms Green a greeting that identifies a philosophy, and describes her yet-to-be recognized struggle in a foreign land, “Welcome to Yu-go-slave-ia!” Even from a distance of time and personal development, Green refers to Yu-go-slave-ia with the eternal repetition of a spoken and silent mantra. The term qualifies, strengthens, and validates the effort required to cope with the daily challenges of work, life, and growth throughout her sentence of voluntary contract.Amidst the colorless standard of unchanging menu and circadian sluggishness, Green explores her partially conscious attachments - what laymen call personal baggage. These include ancestral wounds, capitalist urges, and tendencies toward self entitlement. Modern life makes it unlikely for one to move into honest consideration of such matter, yet her prolonged adventure successfully cultivates this difficult introspection. Despite the fact that she is largely alone in this process - minus the benefit of nurturing mentor or friendly advocate - she is victorious. The conscious change within the author bears reward before any external changes can be viscerally experienced. Contentment is acquired with genuine gratitude. For readers too young or historically disconnected from Eastern European affairs of state, Green offers a documentary style foundation of political events as they relate to the structure of her experience. On levels professional, social, and personal, details of East/West political paradox are brooded upon, noted, and credited for influencing cultural differences. Less consistent with the lion’s share of her written accounts, Green fast forwards to her own ideological projections of world economics, spirit, and personal ethics. As much as this author is touting the need to release from an “I-centered” awareness, work obviously remains to be done. Such is the nature of an authentic and ongoing practice.

By Stardancer "In Once Upon a Yugoslavia, Surya Green presents a unique perspective on the socio-political climate of Tito’s Yugoslavia in 1968. Her astute description of a culture she experienced as so different from her American heritage provides us with much food for thought about issues that remain relevant to our lives today. And yet this extremely well-written book, in a clear and direct style, captivates us with its interesting characters and developments as if we were reading a novel."

By bastiaensen The writer takes you on a wonderful journey from Socialist Yugoslavia through buzzing New York City to the Flower Power days of California in the late sixties. But her travels are not only geographical; the book also invites you to a journey within. Highly recommended!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. By A Dan I read each of these books before the series came out. You are going to need to set aside some reading and breath holding time to enjoy all the twists and turns to be experienced. The bedroom is hot and the characters are, as well. Don't let the hot and cold feelings of the hero and heroine bother you; it only makes the story more intriguing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Too Hot To Handle. By Beagle mom This one is so much more than hot. It could melt a snowball in Alaska in December. Ash is as confused as a man can get. Toni see him for what he is, but falls for him anyway. There is a lot of action from so many different plots. Is very well written and you are able to keep on track with it all. Kept my attention. Started early and did not put it down until I finished it. Sleep is overrated.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Could have been shorter. By iris This book would have been just as interesting had it been much shorter. Too much of the same scenes. Plot was lost in the repeating of the same identical sexual encounters. Authors should realize their story is good enough without sexual overkill.

‘Nobody has done more harm to me . . . than Jawaharlal Nehru,’ wrote Subhas Chandra Bose in 1939. Had relations between the two great nationalist leaders soured to the extent that Bose had begun to view Nehru as his enemy? But then, why did he name one of the regiments of the Indian National Army after Jawaharlal? And what prompted Nehru to weep when he heard of Bose’s untimely death in 1945, and to recount soon after, ‘I used to treat him as my younger brother’?Rudrangshu Mukherjee’s fascinating book traces the contours of a friendship that did not quite blossom as political ideologies diverged, and delineates the shadow that fell between them—for, Gandhi saw Nehru as his chosen heir and Bose as a prodigal son.

Superb Treatment of the Symmetries and Asymmetries of the Lives of Two Great Freedom Fighters By Romi Mahajan Mukherjee has done a wonderful job in covering the arc of both Nehru and Bose's political lives and their personal friendship, with all its highs and lows. The symmetries are remarkable - their love of India, their insistence upon home rule and Independence, their frustration at the Rightists in Congress, their flirtation with socialism, and their erudition and intelligence. Their differences, too, are made very clear in the book- Nehru's ameliorative relationship with Gandhi versus Bose's fiery relationship, Nehru's desire to compromise versus Bose's unrelenting points of view, Nehru's hatred of Fascism versus Bose's respect for the militarism and order brought about by fascism, and so on.Though the final trajectories of these two men diverged considerably- Bose died early while Nehru- Gandhi's chosen one-- went on to the Prime Minister of free India, the two men had and amazing kinship. Ultimately, the Mahatma anointed one and disenfranchised the other.Mukherjee's book is lucidly written and treats both protagonists with enormous humanity and empathy. Indispensable reading for those interesting in India's Independence movement.

The book brings out the fact that Bose was a misguided intellect in a matter of fact manner. The language of the book is very lucid. The book leaves the impression that both Nehru and Bose had several sore spots in their personality. Not great persons indeed.

Best Ebook PDF Online Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography, by Carol M. Ford, Dee Young, Linda J. Groundwater

Since his untimely death on June 29, 1978, Bob Crane's unofficial biography has become akin to a broken record. Like a skip in the acetate, his murder and the scandal that grew from it have been the repeated focus of attention, to the exclusion of nearly everything else. Over time, the line between fact and fiction blurred, and his life story became distorted. All perspective on Bob Crane as a human being was lost, and he became nothing more than a two-dimensional cartoon character without depth, understanding, or definition. Now, nearly two hundred people who knew the Hogan's Heroes star personally and better than most (family; friends as far back as elementary school; colleagues in radio, television, theatre, and film) have spoken out on Bob Crane's behalf, and in many instances, for the first time. Within the pages of this book, they share their memories and thoughts about a man whom they knew as an exceptional and talented musician, a genius in radio, a sharp-witted comedian, a gifted actor and director, a man driven to success, a doting and loving father, a loyal friend, and a kind and gentle spirit with a sunny personality, a man who, while not perfect, was vastly different from how he has been presented over the decades. Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography balances the scales and sets the record straight, providing a full and complete history of Bob Crane, clarifying who he really was, and just as importantly, who he was not.               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Deluxe, expanded hardcover edition contains:

  • Exclusive, never-before released historical documents chronicling Bob Crane's life and career.
  • More than 200 family and professional photographs, many exclusive, courtesy of Bob Crane's family, friends, and colleagues.
  • 660 pages containing first-hand accounts from nearly 200 people from Bob Crane's life.
  • A pre-print of Bob Crane's original signature.
All editions contain the same editorial content. The softcover contains fewer photographs and documents than the hardcover. The electronic edition contains editorial content only (no photographs).

Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography, by Carol M. Ford, Dee Young, Linda J. Groundwater

Review Bob Crane was a broadcasting pioneer who made landmark contributions to the industry on both coasts. Ford et al. delve into Crane's radio career like never before. What they have discovered...is nothing short of amazing.--Danny Lyons, WICC/WEBE operations manager, Bridgeport, CT Ford et al. have ripped the lid off the real story of Bob Crane--talented drummer, radio veteran, and comic genius. The public has had too much useless information about Crane--here is the real deal...to understand one of entertainment's most gifted and complex performers.--Marakay Rogers, Broadway WorldIf you're a Bob Crane fan, this book is a must. --Kevin Doran, owner, WLEA 1480 AM, Hornell, New York Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography is an in-depth, well-researched look at a man with an immense talent that has been, since his death, highly underrated. The authors have done an outstanding job. There are many biographies in the world of literature, and this is certainly up there with the best of them. --Dean Mardon, former host, The Dave Dee Drivetime Show, Radio Kidnappers, 1431-AM/104.7 FM, Napier, New Zealand...One of the best Hollywood-related books I have seen. The research is fantastic... I would easily place Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography in a top ten list of performing arts nonfiction. --James Zeruk, Jr., Author of Peg Entwistle and the Hollywood Sign Suicide ...The most extensive biography I've read about a movie or TV actor... The authors captured fond memories and perspectives from Bob's friends and relatives who knew him best... [A] must read for anyone who is a fan of his TV show and legendary radio work. --Bill Dillane, NHTV, North Haven, ConnecticutFord et al. have exhaustively researched every conceivable detail of Bob Crane's life. This book shifts the focus from the sensational and the negative to a holistic, factual view of a talented individual whose life ended too soon. Even those who are not fans of Bob Crane will find this book worthwhile reading.--Cindy Vitto, PhD, Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Rowan University This book sheds light on an addiction that is tragically confined to the shadows, behind closed doors. Sex addicts are subject to immediate moral judgment, when we are ironically more accepting of other addictions. Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography can serve as an inspiration for anyone seeking to understand the often double world of the sex addict. --Susanne A. Quallich, ANP-BC, NP-C, CUNP, FANNP, University of Michigan Health System; Member, Urologic Nursing Journal Editorial Board; and an Expert on Men's Sexual Health

From the Author This project has been far more than just researching, writing, and publishing a book for me. It has been nearly a life-long journey. I first discovered Hogan's Heroes in the mid-1980s when I was just fourteen years old. Hogan's Heroes quickly became my favorite television show, and Bob Crane was my favorite among the cast. There was no Internet in 1985, so I didn't discover any details about the life and death of the show's star right away. But soon, I did learn about Bob's unsolved murder, and I was crushed. And my little, fourteen-year-old self made a promise that somehow, some way, I would fix it and make it better. As a kid, I had no idea how I was ever going to do that. But that didn't stop me. This inexplicable determination to "fix it" grew. On weekends, other kids went to the movies or to the mall; my parents took me to the county library to "research" Bob Crane. Over the years, I started to understand who Bob Crane really was, and the more I understood, the more tenacious I became. When Linda Groundwater, Dee Young, and I crossed paths and began collaborating on this book in 2006--a project Linda started in 2003--all of the pieces started to come together. It took a little while, but now, more than thirty years later, I have finally made good on that promise.  This unbiased work took twelve years to research (officially), across two continents and many time zones. It contains the first-hand accounts from 200 prominent individuals from Bob's life--many of whom I am humbled and honored to now count as a part of my own life. To all of them and to everyone who contributed and/or supported this endeavor, I extend my deepest gratitude and thanks. And to all of you who choose to learn more about the talented, complex, and remarkable man Bob Crane was, I thank you, from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of so many who cared so deeply for him. Author proceeds will be donated to various charities (to be determined) in Bob Crane's memory. Thank you for your support! --Carol M. FordAuthor, Bob Crane: TheDefinitive Biography  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Co-Researchers/Co-Authors of Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography Dee YoungDee Young maintained an impressive career in radio and at WICC-600 AM for nearly forty years as the Assistant Business Manager for WICC 600-AM and WEBE-108 FM, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In January 1976, Dee was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet Bob Crane on the day he was in Bridgeport to help WICC celebrate the station's 50th anniversary. She remembers him and the overall experience of his visit fondly. Dee has been instrumental in the research and development of Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography. She brought a wealth of radio knowledge and history spanning several decades to the book, and her network of radio colleagues, including several key individuals who worked alongside of Bob at WICC and/or knew him well, has allowed for a rich illustration of Bob's early career in broadcasting. Since 2011, Dee has also assisted Carol Ford with Bob Crane's nomination for the National Radio Hall of Fame. WICC is an official sponsor of the nomination. Linda J. GroundwaterLinda J. Groundwater is a former freelance writer and American radio news journalist. She is currently a Retail Lending Specialist for the Bank of Queensland, Capalaba, and has nearly twenty years of experience in banking management. In 2003, Linda took an interest in learning more about Bob Crane. She believed there had to be more to his story than his starring role on Hogan's Heroes,or his murder and the scandal that grew from it. Using her journalism skills, she began to reach out to people from Bob's life with the intent to gather information to produce a more balanced biography. Early contributors/supporters included Bob's cousin Jim Senich and Reverend Edward Beck, who applauded the effort. From there, the list grew steadily. Dee Young and Carol Ford became involved in the project in 2005 and early 2006, respectively, and together, they amassed a collection of interviews and memories from 200 people from Bob's life specifically for Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography (then with the working title Flipside: The True Story of Bob Crane). Also an actress, Linda performs professionally as well as in local community theatre in the Queensland area. She is also Vice President and Publicity Officer for the Mount Cotton Drama Group. Linda's faith, her family, loyal friends, and her German Shepherd named Midnight are all most important to her. TRULY DEFINITIVE By James Zeruk, Jr. *Note: The following is based on a pre-release advanced copy. There is a good reason why the authors and publisher of "Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography" agreed on the choice of title: because it is indeed the definitive biography on Bob Crane. Carol M. Ford, Dee Young, and Linda Groundwater have amassed a wealth of knowledge and present a remarkably detailed look at the life of the man most remembered for playing “Colonel Hogan” in the 1960s television hit Hogan’s Heroes; his sensationalized prowess with beautiful women, and for the grotesque murder that took his life in 1978. However, this beautifully written, respectful biography presents amazing aspects of Crane’s life that are mostly unknown by his fans and too often ignored by authors more interested in selling sex and blood. Bob Crane was a talented musician (having played drums with the likes of Gene Krupa), and a radio pioneer skilled at creating affable characters and contrived conversations during his top-rated show. He became the most popular radio personality in Los Angeles. During his tenure at the CBS affiliate there, Bob Crane also interviewed 3,000 celebrities. Publicists and agents scrambled to get their clients interviewed by him. It became an honor to sit for an hour with the biggest and best voice of the air."Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography" is a 660-page heavyweight. Usually, books of such length are tedious, overly footnoted tomes best suited for Presidents, monarchs, and historic battles. But I was immediately pulled into the narrative’s breezy style. Carol Ford writes beautifully. The research and anecdotal contributions of coauthors Young and Groundwater, and the quotes and recollections from interviews of over 200 people who knew Bob Crane privately or professionally, are sprinkled expertly and evenly throughout. There are over 200 photographs, too—many never published till now. Also key to the book is the invaluable cooperation of Bob Crane’s son, Robert Scott Crane, whose mother was the lovely Sigrid Valdis, who played “Hilda” on Hogan’s Heroes.I have read hundreds of biographies … hundreds. Bob Crane’s definitive book by Ford, Young, and Groundwater is easily one of the best Hollywood related books I have seen. The research is fantastic. The pace is comfortable and the overall presentation was extremely well thought out, with an emphasis focusing on what truly comprised the life and career of this all too often misunderstood man. With all the above in consideration, and the simple fact that this book does what all the other Crane biographies do not do, I would easily place it in my top ten list of performing arts nonfiction.James Zeruk, Jr.Author of "Peg Entwistle and the Hollywood Sign Suicide."

Having said that, I must admit I approached this volume with a certain amount of trepidation. Particularly with that title... "The Definitive Biography." I needn't have worried.I've been a fan of Bob Crane since childhood. My formative years were spent watching Hogan's Heroes every week. In early 1969, as the Heroes were winding down their 4th season,, I was a nine year old TV geek, who was determined to break into the business and had already plowed through what may have been the first behind-the-scenes TV book, The Making of Star Trek. So I knew enough to be dangerous and I wrote to Bob Crane, care of CBS. I asked him some very specific questions about production of the series... where it was filmed, how he felt playing the same character week after week, how long it took to film an episode, etc. A number of weeks later I received a large color postcard of Bob. On the back, in careful blue flair pen, all caps (as seen in Carol's book), he'd written specific and detailed answers to all of my questions. It was that response that helped lead - and encourage me - to pursue a successful career in film and television. But most importantly, I'm still watching Hogan's Heroes 47 years later. But I digress. Biographies are tough, particularly when the subject is no longer with us. The best ones are like time travel; they provide historical context and setting. They give us a feel for the subject, what it was like to work, hang out, eat, drink, just be in the room with them. And if we're lucky, they tell us what made them tick, what drove them and what they struggle with. They unlock the mystery a bit. One of the finest entertainment bios I've ever read was Nick Tosches' DINO, the story of Dean Martin. Toches succeeded in bringing Dean Martin to life. I came away knowing what it was like to 'be in the room" with Dean Martin. But Toches never unlocked the mystery. He wasn't able to expose who Dino really was. His final conclusion was that Dean Martin was unknowable. Because he wasn't telling. And those friends that survived him couldn't either, because they never knew, And like Dino, his family wasn't telling. But Carol and her co-authors have pulled off a literary miracle. The real Bob Crane is here. In these pages. Told through their words, the memories of friends, family, co-workers and those who tried to help him. And it's the truth, about a complex man, and a complex story, far different from the scandalous legend described in 38 years of tabloid tales, one poorly-researched book and the shameful and sadly inaccurate movie it spawned. What is revealed in this book is the story of a driven, flawed man, who connected with his fans and did his best for his family, even as he battled demons that eventually pulled him into the abyss. It's also hopeful, in a way, in that it Bob ultimately took control of his life and began the long climb up the mountain of recovery. The ultimate tragedy is not what he did - but that he didn't get the chance to finish that climb. But he took the steps, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters. The book itself is extraordinarily detailed, from beginning to end. The focus is on his life, his family and his career, with large chunks focusing on his incredible and amazing ahead-of-its-time radio work and comedy, behind-the-scenes on Donna Reed, multiple chapters on Hogan's Heroes, his charity work and his post-Hogan career, including the 1975 NBC Bob Crane show. And far from a white-wash, it takes, for the first time, a detailed and serious look at his struggle with sexual addiction, how it affected his life and career, how he finally took steps to battle it - and how it eventually killed him. Ford and Co. do not pull any punches... but the reader is left with a sense of deep compassion for Crane; a good, decent man, who tried his best to be a good father, friend and entertainer despite the demons that haunted him. His death had as much to do with the times he lived in as anything else. If he'd had these struggles even a decade later he'd still be with us.I can't say enough about this book. Since 1978, when people have thought of Bob Crane, they've thought about how he died. This book shows us how he lived. And he had much to be proud of. Carol quotes Joe Cosgrove, one of Bob's co-workers, who describes Bob's flaws as "specs on the Parthenon" and implores us to "lift our eyes up to the man's eyes and soul and life, and not look down on the gutter."Carol Ford sums it up at the end: "It's time to look at Bob Crane and see the Parthenon."
